Abstract

In this work the Coulomb effects (Coulomb correlations) in $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs produced in p + Ni collisions at 24 GeV/$c$, are studied using experimental $\pi^+\pi^-$ pair distributions in $Q$, the relative momentum in the pair center of mass system (c.m.s), and its projections $Q_L$ (longitudinal component) and $Q_t$ (transverse component) relative to the pair direction in the laboratory system (l.s.). The $Q$, $Q_L$, and $Q_t$ distributions of the {\sl Coulomb pairs} in the c.m.s. have been simulated assuming they are described by the phase space modified by the known point-like Coulomb correlation function $A_C(Q)$, corrected for small effects due to the nonpoint-like pair production and the strong two-pion interaction. The same distributions of {\sl non-Coulomb pairs} have been simulated according to the phase space, but without $A_C(Q)$. It is shown that the number of {\sl Coulomb pairs} in all $Q_t$ intervals, including the small $Q_t$ (small opening angles $\theta$ in the l.s.) is calculated with the theoretical precision better than 2\%. The comparison of the simulated and experimental numbers of {\sl Coulomb pairs} at small $Q_t$ allows us to check and correct the detection efficiency for the pairs with small $\theta$ (0.06 mrad and smaller). It is shown that {\sl Coulomb pairs} can be used as a new physical tool to check and correct the quality of the simulated events. The special property of the {\sl Coulomb pairs} is the possibility of checking and correcting the detection efficiency, especially for the pairs with small opening angles.

Abstract

The DIRAC experiment at CERN investigated in the reaction $\rm{p}(24~\rm{GeV}/c) + Ni$ the particle pairs $K^+K^-, \pi^+ \pi^-$ and $p \bar{p}$ with relative momentum $Q$ in the pair system less than 100 MeV/c. Because of background influence studies, DIRAC explored three subsamples of $K^+K^-$ pairs, obtained by subtracting -- using time-of-flight (TOF) technique -- background from initial $Q$ distributions with $K^+K^-$ sample fractions more than 70\%, 50\% and 30\%. The corresponding pair distributions in $Q$ and in its longitudinal projection $Q_L$ were analyzed first in a Coulomb model, which takes into account only Coulomb final state interaction (FSI) and assuming point-like pair production. This Coulomb model analysis leads to a $K^+K^-$ yield increase of about four at $Q_L=0.5$ MeV/c compared to 100 MeV/c. In order to study contributions from strong interaction, a second more sophisticated model was applied, considering besides Coulomb FSI also strong FSI via the resonances $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ and a variable distance $r^*$ between the produced $K$ mesons. This analysis was based on three different parameter sets for the pair production. For the 70\% subsample and with best parameters, $3680\pm 370$ $K^+K^-$ pairs was found to be compared to $3900\pm 410$ $K^+K^-$ extracted by means of the Coulomb model. Knowing the efficiency of the TOF cut for background suppression, the total number of detected $K^+K^-$ pairs was evaluated to be around $40000\pm 10\%$, which agrees with the result from the 30\% subsample. The $K^+K^-$ pair number in the 50\% subsample differs from the two other values by about three standard deviations, confirming -- as discussed in the paper -- that experimental data in this subsample is less reliable.

Abstract

The adapted DIRAC experiment at the CERN PS accelerator observed for the first time long-lived hydrogen-like $\pi^+\pi^-$ atoms, produced by protons hitting a beryllium target. A part of these atoms crossed the gap of 96~mm and got broken up in the 2.1~\textmu{}m thick platinum foil. Analysing the observed number of atomic pairs, $n_A^L= \left.436^{+157}_{-61}\right|_\mathrm{tot}$, the lifetime of the 2$p$ state is found to be ${\tau_{2p}=(\left.0.45^{+1.08}_{-0.30}\right|_\mathrm{tot}) \cdot10^{-11}}$s, not contradicting the corresponding QED $2p$ state lifetime ${\tau_{2p}^\mathrm{QED}=1.17 \cdot 10^{-11}}$s. This lifetime value is three orders of magnitude larger than our previously measured value of the $\pi^+\pi^-$ atom ground state lifetime $\tau=(\left.3.15^{+0.28}_{-0.26}\right|_\mathrm{tot})\cdot 10^{-15}$s. Further studies of long-lived $\pi^+\pi^-$ atoms will allow to measure energy differences between $p$ and $s$ atomic states and so to determine $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths with the aim to check QCD predictions., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

After having announced the statistically significant observation (5.6~$\sigma$) of the new exotic $\pi K$ atom, the DIRAC experiment at the CERN proton synchrotron presents the measurement of the corresponding atom lifetime, based on the full $\pi K$ data sample: $\tau = (5.5^{+5.0}_{-2.8}) \cdot 10^{-15}s$. By means of a precise relation ($<1\%$) between atom lifetime and scattering length, the following value for the S-wave isospin-odd $\pi K$ scattering length $a_0^{-}~=~\frac{1}{3}(a_{1/2}-a_{3/2})$ has been derived: $\left|a_0^-\right| = (0.072^{+0.031}_{-0.020}) M_{\pi}^{-1}$., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of $\nu_\mu$ disappearance in a $\nu_\mu$ beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of $2.74 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure $\Delta m^{2}_{32}=(2.52^{+0.20}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$ and $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically-degenerate best fit points at $\sin^2\theta_{23} = $ 0.43 and 0.60. Abstract

We report results from the first search for $\nu_\mu\to\nu_e$ transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to $2.74\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of $0.99\pm0.11$ (syst.) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of $1.07\pm0.14$ (syst.). The $3.3\sigma$ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors $0.1\pi < \delta_{CP} < 0.5\pi$ in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

The results of a search for hydrogen-like atoms consisting of $\pi^{\mp}K^{\pm}$ mesons are presented. Evidence for $\pi K$ atom production by 24 GeV/c protons from CERN PS interacting with a nickel target has been seen in terms of characteristic $\pi K$ pairs from their breakup in the same target ($178 \pm 49$) and from Coulomb final state interaction ($653 \pm 42$). Using these results the analysis yields a first value for the $\pi K$ atom lifetime of $\tau=(2.5_{-1.8}^{+3.0})$ fs and a first model-independent measurement of the S-wave isospin-odd $\pi K$ scattering length $\left|a_0^-\right|=\frac{1}{3}\left|a_{1/2}-a_{3/2}\right|= \left(0.11_{-0.04}^{+0.09} \right)M_{\pi}^{-1}$ ($a_I$ for isospin $I$)., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The DIRAC experiment at CERN investigated in the reaction p(24 GeV/c)+Ni the particle pairs K+K−,π+π−, and pp¯ with relative momentum Q in the pair system less than 100 MeV/c. Because of background influence studies, DIRAC explored three subsamples of K+K− pairs, obtained by subtracting-using the time-of-flight (TOF) technique-the background from initial Q distributions with K+K− sample fractions more than 70%, 50%, and 30%. The corresponding pair distributions in Q and in its longitudinal projection QL were analyzed first in a Coulomb model, which takes into account only the Coulomb final-state interaction (FSI) and assuming pointlike pair production. This Coulomb model analysis leads to a K+K− yield increase of about four at QL=0.5 MeV/c compared to 100 MeV/c. In order to study contributions from strong interaction, a second more sophisticated model was applied, considering also strong FSI via the resonances f0(980) and a0(980) and a variable distance r* between the produced K mesons besides Coulomb FSI. This analysis was based on three different parameter sets for the pair production. For the 70% subsample and with the best parameters, 3680±370 K+K− pairs were found to be compared to 3900±410 K+K− extracted by means of the Coulomb model. Knowing the efficiency of the TOF cut for background suppression, the total number of detected K+K− pairs was evaluated to be around 40000±10%, which agrees with the result from the 30% subsample. The K+K− pair number in the 50% subsample differs from the two other values by about three standard deviations, confirming—as discussed in the paper—that experimental data in this subsample is less reliable. In summary, the upgraded DIRAC experiment observed increased K+K− production at small relative momentum Q. The pair distribution in Q is well described by Coulomb FSI, whereas a potential influence from strong interaction in this Q region is insignificant within experimental errors.

Abstract

The adapted DIRAC experiment at the CERN PS accelerator observed for the first time long-lived hydrogenlike π+π− atoms, produced by protons hitting a beryllium target. A part of these atoms crossed the gap of 96 mm between the target and a 2.1 μm thick platinum foil, in which most of them dissociated. Analyzing the observed number of atomic pairs, nAL=436−61+157|tot, the lifetime of the 2p state is found to be τ2p=(0.45−0.30+1.08|tot)×10−11 s, not contradicting the corresponding QED 2p state lifetime τ2pQED=1.17×10−11 s. This lifetime value is three orders of magnitude larger than our previously measured value of the π+π− atom ground state lifetime τ=(3.15−0.26+0.28|tot)×10−15 s. Further studies of long-lived π+π− atoms will allow us to measure energy differences between p and s atomic states and so to discriminate between the isoscalar and isotensor ππ scattering lengths with the aim to check QCD predictions.

Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of $\nu_\mu$ disappearance in a $\nu_\mu$ beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of $2.74 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure $\Delta m^{2}_{32}=(2.52^{+0.20}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$ and $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically-degenerate best fit points at $\sin^2\theta_{23} = $ 0.43 and 0.60. Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of nu(mu) disappearance in a nu(mu) beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of 2.74 x 10(20) protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure Delta m(32)(2) = (2.52(-0.18)(+0.20)) x 10(-3) eV(2) and sin(2) theta(23) in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically degenerate best-fit points at sin(2) theta(23) = 0.43 and 0.60. Results for the inverted mass hierarchy are also presented.

Abstract

We report results from the first search for nu(mu) -> nu(e) transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to 2.74 x 10(20) protons on target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of 0.99 +/- 0.11 (syst) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of 1.07 +/- 0.14 (syst). The 3.3 sigma excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors 0.1 pi < delta(CP) < 0.5 pi in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L.

Abstract

The results of a search for hydrogen-like atoms consisting of $��^{\mp}K^{\pm}$ mesons are presented. Evidence for $��K$ atom production by 24 GeV/c protons from CERN PS interacting with a nickel target has been seen in terms of characteristic $��K$ pairs from their breakup in the same target ($178 \pm 49$) and from Coulomb final state interaction ($653 \pm 42$). Using these results the analysis yields a first value for the $��K$ atom lifetime of $��=(2.5_{-1.8}^{+3.0})$ fs and a first model-independent measurement of the S-wave isospin-odd $��K$ scattering length $\left|a_0^-\right|=\frac{1}{3}\left|a_{1/2}-a_{3/2}\right|= \left(0.11_{-0.04}^{+0.09} \right)M_��^{-1}$ ($a_I$ for isospin $I$)., 14 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The proposed experiment is a further development of the DIRAC experiment already running at CERN PS. The observation of long-lived (metastable) states of $\pi^+\pi^-$ atoms ($A_{2\pi}$) will be performed with the same setup. This observation opens a possibility to measure the energy difference between $ns$ and $np$ states and to determine the value of the combination $2a_0+a_2$ of S-wave $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths in a model-independent way. In combination with the $A_{2\pi}$ lifetime measurement providing the value $|a_0-a_2|$ DIRAC is in the position to get $a_0$ and $a_2$ separately on the basis of $A_{2\pi}$ data only.

Abstract

The proposed experiment is a further development of the DIRAC experiment already running at CERN PS. Up to now more than 21000 $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs originated from the $\pi^+\pi^-$ atom ($A_{2\pi}$) breakup were identified and the overall accuracy of the $A_{2\pi}$ lifetime is about 9% in accordance with the DIRAC proposal. This measurement allowed to extract the difference $|a_0-a_2|$ of $s$-wave $\pi\pi$-scattering length with accuracy of 4.3%. The observation of long-lived (metastable) $A_{2\pi}$ states will be performed with the same setup. This observation opens a possibility to measure the energy difference between $ns$ and $np$ states and to determine the value of another combination $2a_0+a_2$ of $\pi\pi$ scattering length in a model-independent way. In combination with the first measurement it allows to get $a_0$ and $a_2$ separately. An additional measurement of the multiple scattering angles in different materials with accuracy better than 1% will be performed in parallel with the observation. This measurement is needed to improve the systematic accuracy in the $A_{2\pi}$ lifetime for the data already collected in 2008--2010.

Abstract

It is the aim of this contribution to provide an overview of luminescence spectra and decay characteristics of Nd3+, Er3+ and Tm3+ centers in LiLuF4 single crystal including possible energy transfer mechanisms towards and away from the Nd3+ 5d excited state. Single crystal doped with the mentioned RE ions were prepared by micro-pulling-down technique. Excitation and emission spectra and fast decay kinetics in VUV spectral region are completed with radio-and photoluminescence spectra and decay kinetics in UV-visible region.

The research and development of new VUV scintillators includes also LuLiF4 single crystals doped by \Nd^3+. Abstract

Abstract: An overview of absorption and luminescence characteristics of Nd3+ and Gd3+ centers in a LiLuF4 single crystal host is provided. Single crystals doped with the above rare earth ions were prepared by micro-pulling-down technique in the form of rods a few cm long with a diameter of about 2mm. Excitation and emission spectra and fast decay kinetics in VUV and UV spectral regions were measured at room temperature. The observed absorption and emission peaks are due to the 5d–4f and 4f–4f optical transitions of Nd3+ and Gd3+ centers. Concentration dependence of the decay kinetics is also discussed. Abstract

Abstract: An overlook of absorption and luminescence characteristics of Nd3+, Er3+ and Tm3+ centers in LiLuF4 single crystal is provided. Single crystal doped with the mentioned RE ions were prepared by micro-pulling-down technique in the form of few cm long rods with the diameter of about 2 mm. Excitation and emission spectra and fast decay kinetics in VUV spectral region were measured at SUPERLUMI station at synchrotron DESY, Hamburg and characterization was further completed in UV-visible region at conventional spectrophotometers. Observed absorption and emission peaks are ascribed to the 5d–4f and 4f–4f optical transitions in the doped rare earth ions. Concentration dependence of the decay kinetics is discussed. Abstract

The observation of hydrogenlike πK atoms, consisting of π^{-}K^{+} or π^{+}K^{-} mesons, is presented. The atoms are produced by 24  GeV/c protons from the CERN PS accelerator, interacting with platinum or nickel foil targets. The breakup (ionization) of πK atoms in the same targets yields characteristic πK pairs, called "atomic pairs," with small relative momenta Q in the pair center-of-mass system. The upgraded DIRAC experiment observed 349±62 such atomic πK pairs, corresponding to a signal of 5.6 standard deviations. This is the first statistically significant observation of the strange dimesonic πK atom.
