Abstract

This research shows the results regarding the response to acidic condition of the sediment and Posidonia foraminiferal assemblages collected around the Panarea Island. The Aeolian Archipelago represents a natural laboratory and a much-promising study site for multidisciplinary marine research (carbon capture and storage, geochemistry of hydrothermal fluids and ocean acidification vs. benthic and pelagic organisms). The variability and the complexity of the interaction of the ecological factors characterizing extreme environments such as shallow hydrothermal vents did not allow us to carry out a real pattern of biota responses in situ, differently from those observed under controlled laboratory conditions. However, the study provides new insights into foraminiferal response to increasing ocean acidification (OA) in terms of biodiversity, faunal density, specific composition of the assemblages and morphological variations of the shells. The study highlights how the foraminiferal response to different pH conditions can change depending on different environmental conditions and microhabitats (sediments, Posidonia leaves and rhizomes). Indeed, mineral sediments were more impacted by acidification, whereas Posidonia microhabitats, thanks to their buffer effect, can offer “refugia” and more mitigated acidic environment. At species level, rosalinids and agglutinated group represent the most abundant taxa showing the most specific resilience and capability to face acidic conditions.

Abstract

To enrich spatio-temporal information on the distribution of alien, cryptogenic, and neonative species in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, a collective effort by 173 marine scientists was made to provide unpublished records and make them open access to the scientific community. Through this effort, we collected and harmonized a dataset of 12, 649 records. It includes 247 taxa, of which 217 are Animalia, 25 Plantae and 5 Chromista, from 23 countries surrounding the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Chordata was the most abundant taxonomic group, followed by Arthropoda, Mollusca, and Annelida. In terms of species records, Siganus luridus, Siganus rivulatus, Saurida lessepsianus, Pterois miles, Upeneus moluccensis, Charybdis (Archias) longicollis, and Caulerpa cylindracea were the most numerous. The temporal distribution of the records ranges from 1973 to 2022, with 44% of the records in 2020–2021. Lethrinus borbonicus is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea, while Pomatoschistus quagga, Caulerpa cylindracea, Grateloupia turuturu, and Misophria pallida are first records for the Black Sea ; Kapraunia schneideri is recorded for the second time in the Mediterranean and for the first time in Israel ; Prionospio depauperata and Pseudonereis anomala are reported for the first time from the Sea of Marmara. Many first country records are also included, namely: Amathia verticillata (Montenegro), Ampithoe valida (Italy), Antithamnion amphigeneum (Greece), Clavelina oblonga (Tunisia and Slovenia), Dendostrea cf. folium (Syria), Epinephelus fasciatus (Tunisia), Ganonema farinosum (Montenegro), Macrorhynchia philippina (Tunisia), Marenzelleria neglecta (Romania), Paratapes textilis (Tunisia), and Botrylloides diegensis (Tunisia).

Abstract

Este artículo contiene 18 páginas, 4 figuras., Good datasets of geo-referenced records of alien species are a prerequisite for assessing the spatio-temporal dynamics of biological invasions, their invasive potential, and the magnitude of their impacts. However, with the exception of first records on a country level or wider regions, observations of species presence tend to remain unpublished, buried in scattered repositories or in the personal databases of experts. Through an initiative to collect, harmonize and make such unpublished data for marine alien and cryptogenic species in the Mediterranean Sea available, a large dataset comprising 5376 records was created. It includes records of 239 alien or cryptogenic taxa (192 Animalia, 24 Plantae, 23 Chromista) from 19 countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. In terms of records, the most reported Phyla in descending order were Chordata, Mollusca, Chlorophyta, Arthropoda, and Rhodophyta. The most recorded species was Caulerpa cylindracea, followed by Siganus luridus, Magallana sp. (cf. gigas or angulata) and Pterois miles. The dataset includes records from 1972 to 2020, with the highest number of records observed in 2018. Among the records of the dataset, Dictyota acutiloba is a first record for the Mediterranean Sea. Abstract

The aim of the study is to provide a synthesis on the biodiversity of zoobenthic species and benthic habitat distribution of Site of National Interest (SNI) of Bagnoli-Coroglio (Gulf of Naples, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy), which represents one of the priority areas selected at National level for habitat restoration, and is located within the Gulf of Pozzuoli (a large Bay at the northern part of the Gulf of Naples). The work provides a dataset, covering the entire Gulf of Pozzuoli, and obtained consulting several sources of information, from historical to recent publications, and grey literature, aimed at the production of a check-list of species, and reconstruction map of the main marine habitats, in order to achieve a synoptic overview of the historical and recent zoobenthic fauna, as well as distribution of habitats, in order to serve as reference point for any future restoration plan in the area. Relevant information regarding the study area was found in 67 out of more than 250 sources consulted. Overall, 813 species of benthic organisms were recorded, summing up a total of 1006 records. Among them, 148 species were reported in the pre-industrial period (prior to 1911), 361 species during the industrial period (from 1911 to 1991), and 381 species in the course of the post-industrial period (from 1992 up to the present day). No differences in biodiversity or distribution of individual species were directly attributable to the industrial activities in the study area. Such a finding is possibly due to different sampling effort among periods and lack of quantitative data for the majority of the recorded taxa. A mosaic of various habitat and biocoenoses were documented in the zones (shallow and deep hard bottoms, soft-bottoms with different sediment types, seagrass meadows). An overall reduction of the cover and a higher habitat fragmentation was documented for seagrass meadows (mainly Posidonia oceanica) over time. Given that regression of this seagrass species is common in a much wider extent than that covered by the study area, the trend here observed is probably due to multiple impacts from different human activities, including the industrial one at the Bagnoli SNI. The present study highlights that the SNI area is placed in a wider area representing a mosaic of different habitat types, which can provide donor populations of both habitat formers (sponges, gorgonians, scleractinians, bryozoans and mollusks), and seagrasses. These organisms are potentially relevant in implementing restoration measures aimed to improve the ecological status of this post–industrial area.

6. Phenology and ecology of the alien seagrass Halophila stipulacea in its northern range limit in the Mediterranean Sea

Abstract

The alien seagrass Halophila stipulacea has invaded the Mediterranean Sea from the Red Sea more than 120 y ago, and first recorded in the western Mediterranean Sea in 1995 (Vulcano island, Sicily). The species has further expanded ∼110 nautical miles northward, reaching the harbour of Palinuro (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) in 2006, which currently represents its northern distribution limit. We describe phenology and ecology of H. stipulacea in Palinuro harbour in relation to long-term changes in local sea-surface temperatures (SST). The species occurrence in this area was concomitant to increases in local SSTs, both during winter and summer, especially since the early 2000s. New patches of this species established in the habour in 2018; we monitored two sites from April 2018-November 2019: Patch A (exposed: 1.8−2.0 m depth), and Pier Patches (3−4 m depth; more sheltered conditions). H. stipulacea attained maximal shoot sizes in autumn-winter and minimal sizes in the summer. Shoot density at the Pier was higher (9000 shoots m−2) than at Patch A (6000 shoots m−2) where plants also presented smaller leaves, and lower Leaf Area Index than those at the Pier, likely an adaptation to higher exposure to wave action, sediment resuspention and tramping. Only male flowers were observed in May-July, with higher frequency at the Pier. Grazing by juveniles of the fish Sarpa salpa was pervasive year-round, but more frequent at Patch A. The species seems well established in this new area showing a high plasticity to differential wave exposure conditions at the study sites.
