1. Visualizing hot carrier dynamics by nonlinear optical microscopy at the atomic length scale

Abstract

Probing and manipulating the spatiotemporal dynamics of hot carriers in nanoscale metals is crucial to a plethora of applications ranging from nonlinear nanophotonics to single molecule photochemistry. The direct investigation of these highly non-equilibrium carriers requires the experimental capability of high energy resolution (~ meV) broadband femtosecond spectroscopy. When considering the ultimate limits of atomic scale structures, this capability has remained out of reach until date. Using a two color femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy, we present here the real-time tracking of hot carrier dynamics in a well-defined plasmonic picocavity, formed in the tunnel junction of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The excitation of hot carriers in the picocavity enables ultrafast all optical control over the broadband (~ eV) anti Stokes electronic resonance Raman scattering (ERRS) and the four-wave mixing (FWM) signals generated at the atomic length scale. By mapping the ERRS and FWM signals from a single graphene nanoribbon (GNR), we demonstrate that both signals are more efficiently generated along the edges of the GNR: a manifestation of atomic-scale nonlinear optical microscopy. This demonstration paves the way to the development of novel ultrafast nonlinear picophotonic platforms, affording unique opportunities in a variety of contexts, from the direct investigation of non equilibrium light matter interactions in complex quantum materials, to the development of robust strategies for hot carriers harvesting in single molecules and the next generation of active metasurfaces with deep-sub-wavelength meta-atoms.

Abstract

Plasmonic nanoantennas, metallodielectric structures with engineered size and shape, have attracted much attention lately as they make the control of the directionality and temporal characteristics of light emitted by fluorophores possible. Nanoantennas exploit light-matter interactions mediated by Localized Surface Plasmon Resonances and, so far, have been demonstrated using metallic nanoparticles or other metallic nanostructures. Plasmonic picocavities, i.e., plasmonic cavities with mode volumes below 1 cubic nanometer, could act as antennas to mediate light-matter interaction even more efficiently than their nanoscale counterparts due to their extreme field confinement, but the directionality on their emission is difficult to control. In this work, we show that the plasmonic picocavity formed between the tip of a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope and a metal surface with a monoatomic step shows directional emission profiles and, thus, can be considered as a realization of a picoantenna. Comparison with electromagnetic calculations demonstrates that the observed directionality arises from light emission tilting of the picocavity plasmons. Our results, thus, pave the way to exploiting picoantennas as an efficient way to control light-matter interaction at the nanoscale.

6. Real-Time Tracking of Coherent Oscillations of Electrons in a Nanodevice by Photo-assisted Tunnelling

Abstract

Coherent collective oscillations of electrons excited in metallic nanostructures (localized surface plasmons) can confine incident light to atomic scales and enable strong light-matter interactions, which depend nonlinearly on the local field. Direct sampling of such collective electron oscillations in real-time is crucial to performing petahertz scale optical modulation, control, and readout in a quantum nanodevice. Here, we demonstrate real-time tracking of collective electron oscillations in an Au bowtie nanoantenna, by recording photo-assisted tunnelling currents generated by such oscillations in this quantum nanodevice. The collective electron oscillations show a noninstantaneous response to the driving laser fields with a decay time of nearly 10 femtoseconds. The temporal evolution of nonlinear electron oscillations resulting from the coherent nonlinear optical response of the nanodevice were also traced in real-time. The contributions of linear and nonlinear electron oscillations in the generated tunnelling currents in the nanodevice were precisely determined. A coherent control of electron oscillations in the nanodevice is illustrated directly in the time domain. Functioning in ambient conditions, the excitation, coherent control, and read-out of coherent electron oscillations pave the way toward on-chip light-wave electronics in quantum nanodevices.

7. Imaging and Controlling Coherent Phonon Wave Packets in Single Graphene Nanoribbons

Abstract

The motion of atoms is at the heart of any chemical or structural transformation in molecules and materials. Upon activation of this motion by an external source, several (usually many) vibrational modes can be coherently coupled, thus facilitating the chemical or structural phase transformation. These coherent dynamics occur on the ultrafast time scale, as revealed, e.g., by nonlocal ultrafast vibrational spectroscopic measurements in bulk molecular ensembles and solids. Tracking and controlling vibrational coherences locally at the atomic and molecular scales is, however, much more challenging and in fact has remained elusive so far. Here, we demonstrate that the vibrational coherences induced by broadband laser pulses on a single graphene nanoribbon (GNR) can be probed by femtosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) when performed in a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). In addition to determining dephasing (~ 440 fs) and population decay times (~1.8 ps) of the generated phonon wave packets, we are able to track and control the corresponding quantum coherences, which we show to evolve on time scales as short as ~ 70 fs. We demonstrate that a two-dimensional frequency correlation spectrum unequivocally reveals the quantum couplings between different phonon modes in the GNR., Comment: 18 pages

8. Selectively addressing plasmonic modes and excitonic states in a nanocavity hosting a quantum emitter

Abstract

Understanding and controlling the interaction between the excitonic states of a quantum emitter and the plasmonic modes of a nanocavity is one of the most relevant current scientific challenges, key for the development of many applications, from quantum information processing devices to polaritonic catalysts. In this paper we demonstrate that the tunnel electroluminescence of C60 nanocrystals enclosed in the plasmonic nanocavity between a metallic surface and the tip of a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope, and isolated from the metal surface by a thin NaCl film, can be switched from a broad emission spectrum, revealing the plasmonic modes of the cavity, to a narrow band emission, displaying only the excitonic states of the C60 molecules by changing the bias voltage applied to the junction. Plasmonic emission is found in the same voltage region in which the rate of inelastic tunnel transitions is large and, thus, vanishes for large voltages. Excitonic emission, on the other hand, dominates the spectra in the high-voltage region in which the inelastic rate is low, demonstrating that the excitons cannot be created by an inelastic tunnel process. These results point towards new possible mechanisms to explain the tunnel electroluminescence of quantum emitters and offer new avenues to develop electrically tuneable nanoscale light sources.

11. Electronic temperature and two-electron processes in overbias plasmonic emission from tunnel junctions

Abstract

The accurate determination of electronic temperatures in metallic nanostructures is essential for many technological applications, like plasmon-enhanced catalysis or lithographic nanofabrication procedures. In this Letter we demonstrate that the electronic temperature can be accurately measured by the shape of the tunnel electroluminescence emission edge in tunnel plasmonic nanocavities, which follows a universal thermal distribution with the bias voltage as the chemical potential of the photon population. A significant deviation between electronic and lattice temperatures is found below 30 K for tunnel currents larger than 15 nA. This deviation is rationalized as the result of a two-electron process in which the second electron excites plasmon modes with an energy distribution that reflects the higher temperature following the first tunneling event. These results dispel a long-standing controversy on the nature of overbias emission in tunnel junctions and adds a new method for the determination of electronic temperatures and quasiparticle dynamics.

15. Unveiling the Radiative Local Density of Optical States of a Plasmonic Nanocavity by STM Luminescence and Spectroscopy

Abstract

Disentangling the contributions of radiative and non-radiative localized plasmonic modes from the photonic density of states of metallic nanocavities between atomically-sharp tips and flat substrates remains an experimental challenge nowadays. Electroluminescence due to tunnelling through the tip-substrate gap allows discerning solely the excitation of radiative modes, but this information is inherently convolved with that of the electronic structure of the system. In this work we present a fully experimental procedure to eliminate the electronic-structure factors from the scanning tunnelling microscope luminescence spectra by confronting them with spectroscopic information extracted from elastic current measurements. Comparison against electromagnetic calculations demonstrates that this procedure allows characterizing the meV shifts experienced by the dipolar and quadrupolar plasmonic modes supported by the nanocavity under atomic-scale gap size changes. Our method, thus, gives us access to the frequency-dependent radiative Purcell enhancement that a microscopic light emitter would undergo when placed at the nanocavity.

16. Discrete Electronic Sub-bands without Confinement: Bragg Scattering at Molecular Edges

Abstract

The discretization of the electronic structure of nanometer-size solid systems due to quantum confinement and the concomitant modification of their physical properties is one of the cornerstones for the development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. In this letter we demonstrate that Bragg scattering of Cu(111) surface state electrons by the periodic arrangement of tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) molecules at the edges of self-assembled molecular islands, discretizes the possible values of the electron momentum parallel to the island edge. The electronic structure consists thus of a discrete number of sub-bands which occur in a non-closed space and, therefore, without quantum confinement.

Abstract

Background and Objectives COVID-19–related inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and coagulopathy may increase the bleeding risk and lower the efficacy of revascularization treatments in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We aimed to evaluate the safety and outcomes of revascularization treatments in patients with AIS and COVID-19. Methods This was a retrospective multicenter cohort study of consecutive patients with AIS receiving intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) and/or endovascular treatment (EVT) between March 2020 and June 2021 tested for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. With a doubly robust model combining propensity score weighting and multivariate regression, we studied the association of COVID-19 with intracranial bleeding complications and clinical outcomes. Subgroup analyses were performed according to treatment groups (IVT-only and EVT). Results Of a total of 15,128 included patients from 105 centers, 853 (5.6%) were diagnosed with COVID-19; of those, 5,848 (38.7%) patients received IVT-only and 9,280 (61.3%) EVT (with or without IVT). Patients with COVID-19 had a higher rate of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (SICH) (adjusted OR 1.53; 95% CI 1.16–2.01), symptomatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SSAH) (OR 1.80; 95% CI 1.20–2.69), SICH and/or SSAH combined (OR 1.56; 95% CI 1.23–1.99), 24-hour mortality (OR 2.47; 95% CI 1.58–3.86), and 3-month mortality (OR 1.88; 95% CI 1.52–2.33). Patients with COVID-19 also had an unfavorable shift in the distribution of the modified Rankin score at 3 months (OR 1.42; 95% CI 1.26–1.60). Discussion Patients with AIS and COVID-19 showed higher rates of intracranial bleeding complications and worse clinical outcomes after revascularization treatments than contemporaneous non–COVID-19 patients receiving treatment. 33. Real-space subfemtosecond imaging of quantum electronic coherences in molecules

Abstract

Tracking electron motion in molecules is the key to understanding and controlling chemical transformations. Contemporary techniques in attosecond science are able to generate and trace the consequences of this motion in real time, but not in real space. Scanning tunnelling microscopy, on the other hand, can locally probe the valence electron density in molecules, but cannot alone provide dynamical information at this ultrafast timescale. Here we show that, by combining scanning tunnelling microscopy and attosecond technologies, quantum electronic coherences induced in molecules by <6-fs-long carrier-envelope-phase-stable near-infrared laser pulses can be directly visualized at ångström-scale spatial and subfemtosecond temporal resolutions. We demonstrate concurrent real-space and -time imaging of coherences involving the valence orbitals of perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride molecules, and full control over the population of the involved orbitals. This approach opens the way to the unambiguous observation and manipulation of electron dynamics in complex molecular systems.

Abstract

The synthesis of cycloarenes in solution is challenging because of their low solubility and the often hindered cyclodehydrogenation reaction of their nonplanar precursors. Using an alternative on-surface synthesis protocol, we achieved an unprecedented double-stranded hexagonal cycloarene containing 108 sp2carbon atoms. Its synthesis is based on hierarchical Ullmann coupling and cyclodehydrogenation of a specially designed precursor on a Au(111) surface. The structure and other properties of the cycloarene are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and density functional theory calculations.

Abstract

The article presents the study on itraconazole which is tested effective therapeutic treatment to Aspergillus spp. fungal infections that cause the higher mortality rate of the penguins. An overview of the study states that a fish that contains 8.5 mg/kg or 20 mg/kg oral dosage once a day of commercial capsules were given to 15 penguins,which in turn make the subject experiences an adequate steady-state therapeutic blood vessels. It states that the result does not apply to all cases because to some penguins, the said dosages could be harmful due to the variation of the vitality of the organ system.

46. Results of two Controlled Studies on Antiemetic Combination against Vomiting Induced by 5-Fluorouracil

Abstract

A group of 132 patients with different disseminated solid tumors entered two consecutive antiemetic trials in which 5-fluorouracil given in a 120-h continuous infusion was the emetogenic stimulus. The purpose of the trials was to investigate the validity of Peroutka and Snyder's hypothesis. These authors suggested that CNS receptors other than the classical dopamine D-2 (e.g., histamine H-1 and muscarinic cholinergic receptors) were involved in emetic response. Hence, a combination of a phenothiazine (an antidopaminergic drug) with an antihistaminic or a tricyclic antidepressant (H-1 and muscarinic cholinergic blockers) was suggested to be possibly superior to phenothiazine alone against antineoplastic chemotherapy-induced vomiting. The first study showed the antiemetic superiority of a phenothiazine (thiethylperazine) over placebo but failed to show a superiority of the combination of thiethylperazine and an antihistaminic (diphenhydramine) over thiethylperazine alone. In contrast, the second study proved the superiority of the combination of thiethylperazine and a tricyclic antidepressant (amitriptyline) over thiethylperazine alone. In conclusion, tricyclic antidepressants – but not antihistaminics – potentiate the antiemetic activity of thiethylperazine against 5-fluorouracil-induced vomiting.

47. Interspecies allometric analysis of the comparative pharmacokinetics of 44 drugs across veterinary and laboratory animal species

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to apply the method of allometric analysis to a study of the comparative disposition of veterinary drugs using the Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank (FARAD) as a source of the comparative pharmacokinetic data. An initial filtration of the FARAD data was performed in order to exclude drugs for which no pharmacokinetic data were available, in at least four species the route of administration was other than intravenous, and the matrix was different from blood, plasma or serum. This process restricted the study to a total of 44 candidate drugs. The primary pharmacokinetic parameter selected for study was half‐life (t1/2). As this parameter is a composite of clearance (Cl) and volume of distribution (Vd), it was considered to be the most robust for interspecies scaling. Volume of distribution at steady state (Vdss) and clearance showed weak allometric correlations with weight across species. The relationships between body weight and elimination half‐life (t1/2β) were determined for this selected group of drugs by using the empirically determined function Y=a Wb. The function Yrepresents the parameter of concern (half‐life), ais a coefficient typical of every drug (intercept), Wis the species average body weight, and bis the scaling exponent. A total of 11 drugs (tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, erythromycin, diazepam, prednisolone, cephapirin, ampicillin, gentamicin, apramycin and carbenicillin) showed statistically significant correlations and consequently are excellent candidates for interspecies extrapolation of pharmacokinetic parameters (half‐life) in species of relevance to veterinary medicine. The remaining 33 drugs were divided into two groups which showed various degrees of lack of correlation. Many of the drugs that showed no allometric correlation were low hepatic extraction drugs. However, some other drugs demonstrated equivocal results which could either be due to a true lack of allometric correlation, or be inconclusive due to the lack of quality data or excessive variability due to the multi‐laboratory origin of the FARAD data. The results of this study show that interspecies scaling is applicable to certain veterinary drugs. The experimental determination of the coefficients of the allometric equation for relevant pharmacokinetic parameters (clearance and volume of distribution) could be an important tool in estimating dose in species where the drug has never been studied. This could have important consequences in terms of avoiding the use of dose‐titration studies in Phase I of drug development, for drugs that are experimentally ‘well behaved’.

48. Pharmacokinetics and Ovarian-Stimulatory Effects of Equine and Human Chorionic Gonadotropins Administered Singly and in Combination in the Domestic Cat1

Abstract

Pregnancy success and embryo survival are low with the use of assisted reproduction in felids treated with exogenous gonadotropins. In this study, the pharmacokinetics and ovarian-stimulatory effects of eCG and hCG were evaluated in the domestic cat. Catheterized anestrual queens (n = 4 per treatment [Trt] group) were given 100 IU eCG i.v. (Trt 1), 100 IU eCG i.m. (Trt 2), 75 IU hCG i.v. (Trt 3), 75 IU hCG i.m. (Trt 4), or 100 IU eCG i.m. followed 80 h later by 75 IU hCG i.m. (Trt 5). Blood samples were collected at 0, 5, 30, and 60 min and 4, 8, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, and 168 h postinjection, and serum samples were analyzed for estradiol-17β, progesterone, eCG, and hCG. Pharmacokinetic traits (volume of distribution, Vd; elimination half-life, t1/2β; clearance rate, Clr) were calculated for eCG and hCG. When i.v. and i.m. administration were compared, no differences (p> 0.05) were observed in follicle or corpus luteum (CL) number or hormone concentrations for queens receiving eCG or hCG alone. Number of mature ovarian follicles (≥ 2 mm diameter) observed at 168 h postinjection did not differ (p> 0.05) for eCG (mean ± SEM, 10.5 ± 2.0) vs. hCG (11.1 ± 3.0), indicating that these were equally effective in inducing follicular growth. In most queens (> 90%) given single gonadotropins (i.m. or i.v.), eCG and hCG persisted in circulation for at least 120 h and 96 h after injection, respectively, reflecting similar (p> 0.05) pharmacokinetic (i.v.) values for Vd (eCG, 91.4 ± 24.8 ml/kg; hCG, 59.1 ± 7.9 ml/kg), t1/2β(eCG, 23.0 ± 2.4 h; hCG, 22.9 ± 4.1 h), and Clr (eCG, 2.7 ± 0.5 ml/h per kg; hCG, 1.8 ± 0.1 ml/h per kg). Sequential treatment with eCG+hCG did not affect (p> 0.05) the t1/2βof individual gonadotropins. In summary, eCG and hCG have comparable pharmacokinetics and ovarian-stimulatory activity when administered alone to the domestic cat. These findings suggest that hCG promotes the ancillary follicle formation that is frequently observed after ovulation in cats treated with eCG+hCG regimens, possibly disrupting the maternal environment and decreasing fecundity following assisted reproductive procedures.
