There is a need to better understand the influence of daytime parenting behaviors on children's sleep. We investigated relations between maternal harsh parenting and young children's sleep and consistent with health disparities and cumulative risk perspectives, socioeconomic status was considered as a moderator of these associations. Participants were 172 mothers of children between the ages of 2 and 5 years (mean age of children was 3.30 years) from diverse ethnic (47% of children were White/European American, 24% were Hispanic/Latino, 29% reported other ethnicities) and socioeconomic backgrounds. Mothers reported on children's sleep/wake problems (insufficient sleep duration, night wakings, daytime sleepiness) and their own harsh parenting behaviors. After controlling for several covariates, more maternal harsh parenting was related to greater daytime sleepiness among children. Associations between maternal harsh parenting and insufficient sleep duration and night wakings were significant for children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Results add to the growing literature that has considered children's sleep in the family context and highlight the importance of contemporaneous considerations of the parenting and socioeconomic contexts. Mothers of 2- to 5-year-old children reported on their own harsh parenting and children's sleep. Harsher maternal parenting and children's sleep problems were related, especially for those from lower SES backgrounds. Attempts to improve children's sleep, especially in low SES contexts, may benefit from considering harsh parenting. Mindfulness and vitality are related constructs in the literature; however, mindfulness and vitality have not been fully examined in the literature, specifically with mental health therapists. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between mindfulness and vitality among a sample of licensed mental health clinicians. Compassion satisfaction (CS) and psychological wellbeing are further explored as mechanisms by which a therapist may experience vitality and the impact mindfulness may have on these mechanisms. Mediation analyses were utilized to understand the relationship between mindfulness and vitality and the indirect paths of psychological wellbeing and CS. Results indicate that therapists with greater mindfulness report more vitality, higher overall psychological wellbeing and higher CS. As expected, the relationship between mindfulness and vitality was mediated by psychological wellbeing and CS. Results support the existing research on the relationship between mindfulness and vitality. Understanding the importance of psychological wellbeing and CS has implications for addressing the high incidences of the negative impact of therapeutic work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vitality is an understudied protective mechanism within the psychotherapy literature. This study explored the impact of vitality on the relationship between a counselor's past traumatic experiences on their compassion fatigue. The sample consisted of 113 licensed counselors from a variety of disciplines (e.g., social workers, professional counselors, and marriage and family therapists) and represented an international sample. Findings showed that vitality is significant as a protective mechanism for the development of compassion fatigue for counselors with a history of trauma. The ego depletion hypothesis is provided as a context to describe this relationship and the role vitality plays. Implications for the practicing clinician are provided within this context. The authors examined the altruism born of suffering model in a culturally diverse sample of young adults. They hypothesized that major life events would interact with perspective taking to predict empathic concern, which would predict multiple types of prosocial behaviors among young adults. The sample included 202 young adults (M age = 20.94 years; 76.5% girls; 36.5% White, 50.5% Latino) who reported on their exposure to major life events, perspective taking and empathic responding, and tendency to engage in six forms of prosocial behaviors. Life events indirectly, positively predicted prosocial behaviors via empathic concern. Empathic concern and perspective taking also interacted to predict empathic responding. The results demonstrated links that support the altruism born of suffering model, suggesting that life stressors might not always be negative and might promote resilience and social connection among young adults under specific conditions. Compassion satisfaction is an understudied phenomenon in the counseling literature. The impact of a clinician’s history of trauma on compassion satisfaction and potential protective factors that may enhance feelings of compassion satisfaction is equally understudied. This study aimed to address models of mindfulness as a protective factor for the associations between a clinician’s history of trauma and their experience with compassion satisfaction. The sample consisted of licensed clinicians (N = 113) reporting on their past history of trauma, dispositional mindfulness, and compassion satisfaction. Results indicated that mindfulness moderated the association between a clinician’s history of trauma and compassion satisfaction. Findings also show mindfulness to be significant in supporting a clinician’s experience with compassion satisfaction, overall. Therefore, mindfulness should be further considered as an important safeguard for clinicians to consider in order to continue to enjoy their work. Lower socioeconomic status is related to sleep/wake problems in early childhood, however, the effects are not uniform and there is a need to understand individual differences. We examined whether maternal mindful parenting moderated this association. Participants were 172 mothers of 2- to 5-year-old children (children's M age = 3.30 years) from diverse economic and ethnic backgrounds. Socioeconomic status was indexed using income-to-needs ratio. Mothers reported on children's sleep/wake problems (insufficient sleep duration, night wakings, daytime sleepiness) and two dimensions of mindful parenting (mindful discipline, being in the moment with the child). Higher levels of maternal mindful parenting buffered the extent to which lower socioeconomic status conferred risk for children's insufficient sleep duration and night wakings. Findings build on the literature to consider sleep in the family context and illustrate that positive parenting characteristics may reduce risk for sleep/wake problems in lower socioeconomic contexts. This study examined the levels of Latino mothers’ and fathers’ involvement in their school-age children’s care and the relationships between parents’ socio-economic status (SES) variables, sense of community, community provisions, and marital satisfaction with their involvement in children’s routine and demand care. Mothers and fathers from 159 intact Latino families participated in the study. Multivariate analyses revealed that mothers spent significantly more time in providing child care than fathers did. The gender of the child did not make a difference in the amount of time mothers and fathers invested in children’s care. Whereas community provisions and marital satisfaction predicted mothers’ involvement in routine care, sense of community and community provisions predicted mothers’ involvement in demand care. None of the predictors were related to fathers’ involvement in routine or demand care.
