Abstract

Introduction Parenting a child with a disability is challenging because of the day-to-day responsibilities and time commitment required to meet the needs of children in a family unit with and [...], Many parents who have a child with a disability have higher levels of stress and experience challenges coping with the responsibilities of raising a child with a disability. The purpose of the study was to qualitatively explore the impact of sport participation by children on parental stress and coping skills. Through focus group interviews with 13 parents who had a child with disability, the participants felt a sense of social support through connecting with other parents while their child participated in the sport classes. The sport classes provided developmentally appropriate activities, which promotes self-empowerment and independency within the children. Abstract

Children with disabilities often have many cognitive, physical, and social challenges associated with their disability which may limit participation in activities and interactions with peers without disabilities (King et al., [...], Individuals with disabilities face many physical, cognitive, and/or emotional challenges and must attend to societal factors that often limit participation in activities and interactions with others (King et al., 2003). One method of educating and helping children learn about and become more comfortable interacting with their peers with disabilities is having them participate in disability awareness programs (Magnusson et al., 2017). The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with suggestions and tips to plan a disability awareness program and describe the activities included in an event which celebrated Girl Scouts World Thinking Day. Abstract

We must prepare young adolescents for a bright future by examining all of our educational practices in terms of their current and future relevance. The education we provide our students must prepare them to address enormously complex issues involving demographics and international relations, environmental and human health, and the development and application of technology. This "We Believe"'s (NMSA, 2010) essential attributes of successful schooling can light the way to a bright future. We have clustered the 16 attributes around Four C's: constructivism, collaboration, caring, and comprehensive education. A fifth "C" that weaves through all of the others is critical thinking. The authors and their young adolescent students offer examples of these principles in action, some which may seem "old school" and some "futuristic." However, all can empower our young adolescents to thrive today as well as in a bright future of their making.

Abstract

One of the ongoing challenges that physical educators, coaches, and fitness professionals face is discovering and implementing motivational strategies that encourage long-term participation and effort. This challenge exists in public school physical education classes, on the playing field, and in structured adult physical activity settings. In this article, the authors discuss the use of public posting as a motivation strategy in physical education, sport, and adult exercise settings. Public posting in academic and sport settings generally involves a publicly displayed record of performance for all participants to view and review on a regular basis before and after completing lessons in physical education, practices on the athletic field, and participation in structured exercise classes. Abstract

Teaching students about the physiological benefits of regular exercise is an important, though often challenging, aspect of the K-12 physical education curriculum. Due to a variety of class schedules and physical space restrictions, some physical educators may have difficulty integrating fitness and wellness concepts into their daily lessons. Additionally, physical educators may not always be familiar with resources that are available or that they can rely on. This article describes several instructional practices and available resources on health-related topics that can be useful for promoting fitness awareness among students. Abstract

Early diagnosis of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) continues to be a major hurdle during drug development and post marketing. The objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of promising biomarkers of liver injury—glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH), cytokeratin-18 (K18), caspase-cleaved K18 (ccK18), osteopontin (OPN), macrophage colony-stimulating factor (MCSF), MCSF receptor (MCSFR), and microRNA-122 (miR-122) in comparison to the traditional biomarker alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Biomarkers were evaluated individually and as a multivariate model in a cohort of acetaminophen overdose (n = 175) subjects and were further tested in cohorts of healthy adults (n = 135), patients with liver damage from various causes (n = 104), and patients with damage to the muscle (n = 74), kidney (n = 40), gastrointestinal tract (n = 37) and pancreas (n = 34). In the acetaminophen cohort, a multivariate model with GLDH, K18 and miR-122 was able to detect DILI more accurately than individual biomarkers alone. Furthermore, the three-biomarker model could accurately predict patients with liver injury compared to healthy volunteers or patients with damage to muscle, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract and kidney. Expression of K18, GLDH ad miR-122 was evaluated using a database of transcriptomic profiles across multiple tissues/organs in humans and rats. K18 mRNA (Krt18) and MiR-122 were highly expressed in liver whereas GLDH mRNA (Glud1) was widely expressed. We performed a comprehensive, comparative performance assessment of seven promising biomarkers and demonstrated that a three-biomarker multivariate model can accurately detect liver injury.

39. Highwall stability implications from longwall mining at Broadmeadow mine

Abstract

The Broadmeadow punch longwall coal mine in Central Queensland Australia has experienced significant highwall movement associated with the effect of longwall subsidence when the longwalls approach their final position close to the open cut highwall. In response to this movement Broadmeadow employed two types of broadscale highwall monitoring (radar and laser scanners) to provide full coverage measurement throughout three consecutive longwalls approaching the highwall. This was to attain a better understanding of the mechanism causing the movement and potentially enable prediction of instability. Results from the monitoring found the highwall is displaced to magnitudes unlike those typically measured in open-cut mining, and in direct contrast to typical longwall subsidence behaviour. This paper discusses the ground movements measured, monitoring methods used, safety measures established as well as theorising the failure mechanism. Recommendations are made for mine and pit designs for future punch longwall layouts. The paper shows how the movements measured are more aligned to some measurements made during stream valley closure studies previously presented at the International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) and challenges the mechanisms suggested by previous literature.

Abstract

Historically, a palimpsest is a manuscript or piece of writing material on which the original writing has been effaced to make room for later writing but of which traces remain; or by analogy, anything reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form. Although this practice was most often done with little regard to the original, primarily serving a pragmatic purpose not to waste parchment, it can instead be utilized as methodology for a sort of physical sublation, as it both preserves and changes the original. Or put another way, critically doing a palimpsest allows the physical alteration to become the dialectic interplay between the original and some other term, concept, or object. If contextualized then as a review, this process retains the basic premise of analysis, but changes it from a form of external evaluation to one of synthesis.
