In this study, we compared nanometer-scale (nm) silica (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3) with conventional micrometer-scale (μm) adsorbents (SiO2 and Al2O3) to determine their utility in refining crude fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). Unlike their μm counterparts, hydrated SiO2 and Al2O3 nm-adsorbents did not retain water after utilization in FAME refining. However, hydrated adsorbents significantly improved performance of μm-scale SiO2 and Al2O3 adsorbents for FAME refining. Structurally, the μm-adsorbents are porous multi-layered structures, with FAME adhering to the surface or entrained between layers. Meanwhile, nm-adsorbents were aggregated. As such, FAME loss associated with nm-SiO2 adsorbent was 50.5 % higher than μm-SiO2 adsorbent. In addition, the electrical charge density of the adsorbents influenced their performance in FAME refining. Finally, conventional separation methods (e.g., gravitational setting) were impractical for separating spent nm-adsorbents from FAME; although, the use of an electrostatic field enhanced the removal of nm-adsorbents from solution. Altogether, this study examines the application of nm-adsorbents, compared to μm-adsorbents, and highlights potential increased efficiency in refining biodiesel, such as potentially reducing the need for extensive wet washing processes. Although new separation technologies may be required in recovering spent nm-adsorbents, their application could enhance the sustainability and cost efficiency of biodiesel production.

Alcohol-based hand rubs (ABHRs) formulated with technical-grade ethanol were temporarily permitted in Canada and the U.S beginning April 2020 to meet the current demand due to COVID-19. ABHRs formulated with technical-grade ethanol are low risk for general use. In this review, we discuss the toxicity of common contaminants found in technical-grade ethanol, as well as contaminants that may have been introduced into the products during formulation and packaging of ABHRs. Although primary route of exposure is via dermal absorption and inhalation, there have been reported elevated concerns regarding to ingestion of ABHRs. Overall, the highest risks were associated with methanol (for its toxicity), ethyl acetate (skin defattening), and acetaldehyde (carcinogenic and teratogenic). For these reasons Health Canada and the United States Food and Drug Administration have issued recalls on products containing some of these contaminants. More vigilant policing by regulatory agencies and general product users are required to ensure compliance, safety, and efficacy of these new products, as demand continue to rise during this unprecedented pandemic.

Flaxseed gum (FG) is a by-product of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) meal production that is useful as a food thickener, emulsifier, and foaming agent. FG is typically recovered by hot-water extraction from flaxseed hull or whole seed. However, FG includes complex polymer structures that contain bioactive compounds. Therefore, extraction temperature can play an important role in determining its functional properties, solution appearance, and solution stability during storage. These characteristics of FG, including FG quality, determine its commercial value and utility. In this study, FG solution functional properties and storage stability were investigated for solutions prepared at 70 and 98 °C. Solutions of FG prepared at 98 °C had lower initial viscosity than solutions extracted at 70 °C; though the viscosity of these solutions was more stable during storage. Solutions prepared by extraction at both tested temperatures exhibited similar tolerance to 0.1 mol/L salt addition and freeze-thaw cycles. Moreover, the higher extraction temperature produced a FG solution with superior foaming and emulsification properties, and these properties were more stable with storage. Foams and emulsions produced from FG extracted at higher temperatures also had better stability. FG extracted at 98 °C displayed improved stability and consistent viscosity, foamability, and emulsification properties in comparison to solutions prepared at 70 °C. Therefore, the FG solution extracted at 98 °C had more stable properties and, potentially, higher commercial value. This result indicates that FG performance as a commercial food additive can influence food product quality.

Flaxseed as well as its oil component possess antitumor activities against different types of cancer and have been used by some patients as complementary and/or alternative medicine. Linoorbitides (LOBs) are one family of flaxseed compounds that has implications for anticancer and antioxidant activity. The cytotoxicity of [1-9-NαC]-linusorb-B3 (LOB3), [1-9-NαC]-linusorb-B2 (LOB2), [1-9-NαC],[1-Rs,Ss-MetO]-linusorb-B2 ([MetO]-LOB2) and [1-8-NαC],[1-Rs,Ss-MetO]-linusorb-B1 ([MetO]-LOB1) was measured against human breast cancer Sk-Br-3 and MCF7 cell lines and melanoma A375 cell line. Overall cytotoxicity is cell-type specific. It scales as the hydrophobicity and concentration of the LOBs with the most abundant LOB3 being the most cytotoxic. Oral administration of LOB3 as a potential therapeutic agent might not be applicable as a much too high and/or frequent dose would be required to achieve a serum concentration of 400–500 μg/mL due to bioavailability and pharmacokinetic factors. However, LOB3 may be suitable for topical treatment formulations or as a lead compound in developing anticancer LOB derivatives.
