Abstract Polymeric insulation is a critical component of high voltage systems. However, exposure to high electric stress can cause partial discharges (PDs) to occur and may result in the deterioration of insulation and lead to dielectric failure. These PD events are accompanied by the production of acoustic pressure impulses in the polymer. Detection of these acoustic pressure impulses can reveal the presence of PDs and locate their source. However, analysing the detected acoustic emission (AE) signal is challenging. The acoustic pressure source's nature and the propagating medium's properties, such as density, viscosity, and elasticity, significantly affect the propagating AE signal. The effects of the hardness of the polyurethane (PU) on the propagating AE signal are reported by the authors based on results obtained from laboratory experiments. It was observed that the decay rate in the magnitude of the acoustic impulse was high in PU at all hardness levels following an exponential behaviour. The analysis of the frequency spectra indicates that the higher frequency components attenuate more strongly with distance. These laboratory results can be valuable for engineers and industries as they provide valuable insight into how the physical characteristics of a material affect the propagation characteristics of AE signals during the detection and location of PD source using the AE detection technique.

Abstract Gas discharge and breakdown phenomena have become increasingly important for the development of an ever-growing number of applications. The need for compact and miniaturized systems within power, pulsed power, semiconductor, and power electronic industries has led to the imposing of significant operating electric field stresses on components, even within applications with low operating voltages. Consequently, the interest in gas discharge processes in sub-millimeter and microscale gaps has grown, as the understanding of their initiation and propagation is critical to the further optimization of these technologies. In this work, a computational study of primary ionization fronts has been conducted, which systematically investigated the role of voltage rate-of-rise in point-plane and point-point electrode geometries with an inter-electrode gap maintained at 250 $$\upmu$$ μ m and a needle radius of 80 $$\upmu$$ μ m. Using the hydrodynamic approach with the local mean energy approximation, along with simplified plasma chemistry, simulations have been performed under positive and negative ramp voltages, rising at 50, 25, 16.67, 12.5, and 10 kV/ns in synthetic air and in pure CO $$_{2}$$ 2 . Results on the developed electric field, electron densities, and propagation velocities are presented and discussed. Effects on the cathode sheath thickness scaling with voltage rate-of-rise have been additionally analyzed, the mechanisms behind these effects and their potential impacts are discussed. The work conducted in this study contributes towards an increased understanding of the gas discharge process, under fast-transients and nonuniform electric fields, with relevance to microelectromechanical, power, and pulsed power system design.

In recent years, the interest in nonthermal plasma dynamics has grown significantly, within both industry and research. This has been driven by the development of several novel cold plasma technologies across a wide range of different fields, for example, for plasma medicine, chemical processing, pollution control, and surface treatment. The optimization of these technologies relies heavily upon the understanding of gas discharge plasmas: their generation, electrical characteristics, and interaction with their surroundings. Moreover, the manifestation of nonthermal plasmas in the form of streamers is of high relevance and critical importance to high voltage insulation technology, and has further significance to geophysical research concerning atmospheric discharges. The present work describes the development of the StrAFE (Streamers on Adaptive Finite Elements) package, a dedicated Python library built atop the popular open-source FEniCS finite element software, designed with the objective to simplify and to automate the solution of ionization front models. The library features support for mesh adaptivity, distributed memory parallelism, and an intuitive programming interface, while providing an exceptionally high level of user configurability. This article presents the software implementation, describes its features, and presents several code verification studies performed within simple and complex domains. It is concluded that the numerical results gained from this open-source framework are comparable to other well-established software in terms of accuracy. Therefore, it further demonstrates the great potential for open-source software to make significant contributions to technologies involving nonthermal plasmas, ionization fronts, and gas discharges.

Abstract This work reports the effect of octavinyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OvPOSS) on tuning the electrical performance of polypropylene (PP). OvPOSS with different content are introduced into PP using the solution method. The microstructural morphology, crystallinity behaviour, breakdown strength, DC conductivity, space charge formation, and trapping level distribution are measured. The results indicate that the OvPOSS nanofiller can be dispersed uniformly with a doping content of 2.0 phr or less. The DC conductivity is decreased, and the breakdown strength of OvPOSS/PP nanocomposites is significantly increased. The space charge accumulation of the OvPOSS/PP nanocomposites is significantly suppressed due to the introduction of deeper traps by the OvPOSS nanofiller. Finally, the experimental results demonstrate that the OvPOSS nanofiller can greatly increase the electrical performance of the base PP and the OvPOSS/PP nanocomposites have much potential for HVDC applications. They further demonstrate that the PP is environmental‐friendly due to its thermo‐plastic property, which can be recycled after the manufacture.

Abstract New, more stringent environmental requirements for electrical insulation liquids have led to the development of novel, more environment‐friendly liquid dielectrics. Ester fluids, introduced several decades ago, provide a viable alternative to traditional mineral insulating liquids. In order to expand the practical applications of these novel dielectric fluids, their dielectric and electrical parameters should be established. One of the critical parameters that affects and governs the development of pre‐breakdown processes in insulating liquids is the mobility of charge carriers. In the present paper, the mobility of charge carriers in commercially available synthetic and natural insulating ester fluids and in a mineral insulating oil were obtained using two methods, the time of flight and the space charge saturation current methods. The mobility was obtained for a wide range of electrical field magnitudes. It was found that the mobility of charge carriers is greater in the mineral oil than in both, the natural and synthetic, ester fluids. It was also established that the mobility is higher for higher applied electric field. The results of this work will help in characterizing liquid dielectrics and in optimizing high‐voltage systems in which liquid dielectrics, including natural and synthetic ester fluids, are used.

Generally, the electrical properties of nanocomposite are affected by the type, size, filling concentration and surface treatment process of the nanoparticle. In this study, nanocomposites of polyethylene (PE) with varying filling contents of nano-alumina particles were prepared by the melting blending method and three different kinds of coupling agents were applied for surface modification properties of the nanoparticles. Two of them were silane based and the other was titanate based. The effect of different coupling agents on the dielectric properties was studied. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and thermo-gravimetric analysis were used to verify their compositions. Scanning electron microscope and polarised optical microscopy were used for morphology study. Dielectric permittivity, direct current (DC) volume resistivity and DC breakdown strength characterised their improved insulation performance with nano-alumina as filler. Thermal stimulated current results revealed that adding nano-alumina particles into low-density PE could provide more deep traps and increase DC resistivity.

A pulsed discharge, a DC corona discharge, and a plasma jet are separately generated above a water surface, and reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) in the water are investigated. ROS/RNS in water after the sparging of the off-gas of a packed-bed dielectric barrier discharge (PB-DBD) are also investigated. H2O2, NO2−, and NO3− are detected after plasma exposure and only NO3− after off-gas sparging. Short-lifetime species in plasma are found to play an important role in H2O2 and NO2− production and long-lifetime species in NO3− production. NOx may inhibit H2O2 production through OH consumption to produce HNO2 and HNO3. O3 does not contribute to ROS/RNS production. The pulsed plasma exposure is found to be effective for the production of H2O2 and NO2−, and the off-gas sparging of the PB-DBD for the production of NO3−. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
