We develop a method for constructing a 1-parameter family of globally-defined Love symmetry generators in rotating black hole spacetimes of general dimension. The key ingredient is to focus on the vicinity of the (physical) outer horizon, matching only the radial derivative and the outer horizon pole pieces of the Klein--Gordon operator in the black hole spacetime to the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ Casimir operator. After revisiting the 4D Kerr and 5D Myers--Perry cases, the procedure is illustrated on generalized Lense--Thirring spacetimes which describe a wide variety of slowly rotating black hole metrics in any number of dimensions. Such spacetimes are known to admit an extended tower of Killing tensor and Killing vector symmetries and, as demonstrated in this paper, allow for separability of the massive scalar wave equation in Myers--Perry-like coordinates. Interestingly, separability also occurs in the horizon-penetrating Painlev{\'e}--Gullstrand coordinates associated with the freely infalling observer who registers flat space around her all the way to singularity., Comment: 34 pages

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Flat space cosmologies (FSCs) are time dependent solutions of three-dimensional (3D) gravity with a vanishing cosmological constant. They can be constructed from a discrete quotient of empty 3D flat spacetime and are also called shifted-boost orbifolds. Using this quotient structure, we build a new and generalized Selberg zeta function for FSCs, and show that it is directly related to the scalar 1-loop partition function. We then propose an extension of this formalism applicable to more general quotient manifolds $\mathcal M/\mathbb Z$, based on representation theory of fields propagating on this background. Our prescription constitutes a novel and expedient method for calculating regularized 1-loop determinants, without resorting to the heat kernel. We compute quasinormal modes in the FSC using the zeroes of a Selberg zeta function, and match them to known results., Comment: 25 pages, a few clarifications added

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Holographic dualities between certain gravitational theories in four and five spacetime dimensions and 2D conformal field theories (CFTs) have been proposed based on hidden conformal symmetry exhibited by the radial Klein-Gordon (KG) operator in a so-called near-region limit. In this paper, we examine hidden conformal symmetry of black rings and black strings solutions, thus demonstrating that the presence of hidden conformal symmetry is not linked to the separability of the KG-equation (or the existence of a Killing-Yano tensor). Further, we will argue that these classes of non-extremal black holes have a dual 2D CFT. New revised monodromy techniques are developed to encompass all the cases we consider., Comment: 28 pages

High Energy Physics - Theory ,Mathematical Physics - Abstract
The Selberg zeta function and trace formula are powerful tools used to calculate kinetic operator spectra and quasinormal modes on hyperbolic quotient spacetimes. In this article, we extend this formalism to non-hyperbolic quotients by constructing a Selberg zeta function for warped AdS$_3$ black holes. We also consider the so-called self-dual solutions, which are of interest in connection to near-horizon extremal Kerr. We establish a map between the zeta function zeroes and the quasinormal modes on warped AdS$_3$ black hole backgrounds. In the process, we use a method involving conformal coordinates and the symmetry structure of the scalar Laplacian to construct a warped version of the hyperbolic half-space metric, which to our knowledge is new and may have interesting applications of its own, which we describe. We end by discussing several future directions for this work, such as computing 1-loop determinants (which govern quantum corrections) on the quotient spacetimes we consider, as well as adapting the formalism presented here to more generic orbifolds., Comment: 23 pages, minor revisions and corrections of typos

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
The Kerr/CFT correspondence provides a holographic description of spinning black holes that exist in our universe, and the notion of hidden conformal symmetry allows for a formulation of this correspondence away from extremality. In this work we study how hidden conformal symmetry is manifest when we consider dynamics beyond the Klein-Gordon equation, through studying the analytic structure of higher derivative equations of motion of a massless probe scalar field on a Kerr background using the monodromy method. Since such higher derivative dynamics appear in known examples of holographic AdS/logCFT correspondences, we investigate whether or not a Kerr/logCFT correspondence might be possible., Comment: Contribution to the Open Access Special Issue "Women Physicists in Astrophysics, Cosmology and Particle Physics", Universe, ISSN 2218-1997, IF 1.752

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We generalize the notion of hidden conformal symmetry in Kerr/CFT to Kerr-(A)dS black holes in arbitrary dimensions. We build the SL(2, R) generators directly from the Killing tower, whose Killing tensors and Killing vectors enforce the separability of the equations of motion. Our construction amounts to an explicit relationship between hidden conformal symmetries and Killing tensors: we use the Killing tower to build a novel tensor equation connecting the SL(2,R) Casimir with the radial Klein-Gordon operator. For asymptotically flat black holes in four and five dimensions we recover previously known results that were obtained using the "near-region" limit and the monodromy method. We then perform a monodromy evaluation of the Klein-Gordon scalar wave equation for all Kerr-(A)dS black holes, finding explicit forms for the zero mode symmetry generators. We also extend this analysis to the large-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole as a step towards buliding a Large-D/CFT correspondence., Comment: 39 pages; V2

High Energy Physics - Theory ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
In this note we compute the 1-loop partition function of spin-$s$ fields on Euclidean de Sitter space $S^{2n+1}$ using the quasinormal mode method. Instead of computing the quasinormal mode frequencies from scratch, we use the analytic continuation prescription $L_{\text{AdS}}\to iL_{\text{dS}}$, appearing in the dS/CFT correspondence, and Wick rotate the normal mode frequencies of fields on thermal $\text{AdS}_{2n+1}$ into the quasinormal mode frequencies of fields on de Sitter space. We compare the quasinormal mode and heat kernel methods of calculating 1-loop determinants, finding exact agreement, and furthermore explicitly relate these methods via a sum over the conformal dimension. We discuss how the Wick rotation of normal modes on thermal $\text{AdS}_{2n+1}$ can be generalized to calculating 1-loop partition functions on the thermal spherical quotients $S^{2n+1}/\mathbb{Z}_{p}$. We further show that the quasinormal mode frequencies encode the group theoretic structure of the spherical spacetimes in question, analogous to the recent analysis made for thermal AdS in (1910.07607) and (1910.11913)., Comment: 18 pages, clarifications added, scipost formatting

Grave location ,Exhumation ,Identification methods - Abstract
The First World War took place between 1914 and 1918, with conflict occurring in Europe and across the globe. By the end of the War, the bodies of the British and Commonwealth dead were scattered across France and Belgium. It was decided to move single graves or small cemeteries into bigger cemeteries that were being built by the Imperial War Graves Commission. This process was called "concentration", and involved searching the battlefields for graves, then excavating and attempting to identify the bodies present, prior to their reburial in a concentration cemetery. This thesis focuses on the concentration process and specifically examines a sample of graves from Hooge Crater Cemetery, Belgium. The main research aim is to understand the range of errors that occurred during concentration and identification, and how prolific they were. A historical and literature review was completed, followed by the analysis of data from 109 graves from Hooge Crater Cemetery that were re-exhumed in 1920. This proved that within the sample, a high number of errors occurred in the original concentration work. Following this, 163 burial returns containing the details of 1013 graves from Hooge Crater Cemetery were selected for detailed analysis. The information from these burial returns was gathered and reviewed, and where possible was plotted onto First World War trench maps. This data provides new insights into where and when bodies were concentrated, the type of methods used for identification and how these methods changed over time. The research presented here demonstrates that identification rates varied, and were influenced by several factors including burial location, quantity of body present, time of concentration and primary identification method used. Overall, this thesis expands our knowledge of First World War grave concentration, including how the battlefields were searched and how bodes were identified.

Using the fact that theories of gravity with asymptotically three-dimensional anti-de Sitter geometries have dual descriptions as two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), we present the first study in field theory of the thermodynamic volume of various black hole solutions. We explain in general two-dimensional CFT terms why the presence of a thermodynamic volume can render certain black hole solutions "super-entropic". Super-entropicity simply results from the fact that the Cardy formula, which gives the gravitational Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, can over-count the CFT entropy. The examples of charged Banados, Teitelbiom and Zanelli (BTZ) black holes and generalized exotic BTZ black holes are described. These observations help explain why the specific heat at constant volume can signal the instability of such solutions, as recently conjectured., Comment: 8 pages

The heat kernel and quasinormal mode methods of computing 1-loop partition functions of spin $s$ fields on hyperbolic quotient spacetimes $\mathbb{H}^{3}/\mathbb{Z}$ are related via the Selberg zeta function. We extend that analysis to thermal $\text{AdS}_{2n+1}$ backgrounds, with quotient structure $\mathbb{H}^{2n+1}/\mathbb{Z}$. Specifically, we demonstrate the zeros of the Selberg function encode the normal mode frequencies of spin fields upon removal of non-square-integrable modes. With this information we construct the 1-loop partition functions for symmetric transverse traceless tensors in terms of the Selberg zeta function and find exact agreement with the heat kernel method., Comment: 22 pages, clarifications added, Scipost formatting

We relate the heat kernel and quasinormal mode methods of computing the 1-loop partition function of arbitrary spin fields on a rotating (Euclidean) BTZ background using the Selberg zeta function associated with $\mathbb{H}^{3}/\mathbb{Z}$, extending (1811.08433). Previously, Perry and Williams showed for a scalar field that the zeros of the Selberg zeta function coincide with the poles of the associated scattering operator upon a relabeling of integers. We extend the integer relabeling to the case of general spin, and discuss its relationship to the removal of non-square-integrable Euclidean zero modes.

25. Spectral weight in holography with momentum relaxation

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Holographic low-energy spectral weight at zero temperature and finite momenta indicates the presence of a strongly coupled remnant of Pauli exclusion. Building upon previous work, we study the spectral weight of a bottom-up holographic superfluid model with spontaneously broken translational symmetry. We determine the effect of this symmetry breaking on the previously known attributes of the holographic superconductor spectral weight: 1) an instability at finite momenta and 2) the presence of nested Fermi surfaces (sometimes called Fermi shells). We find that the symmetry breaking seems to strengthen the former and suppress the latter, in a way that we describe.

We calculate the low-energy spectral weight of a holographic superfluid coupled to a Chern-Simons term in IR radial scaling geometries characterized by a parameter $\eta$. This work was motivated by previous results where an unexpected low-energy spectral weight and a region of instability were seen, both at finite momentum, for the holographic superfluid. We characterize the effect of varying the Chern-Simons coupling $\alpha$ and condensate charge parameter $\zeta$ on these regions supporting low-energy spectral weight or a finite momentum instability. We show that $\eta$, $\alpha$ and $\zeta$ each plays a unique role in shaping these regions. We find a surface $\alpha_{\text{crit}}(\eta, \zeta)$ above which the theory is unstable. In the longitudinal channel we extend our analysis to general dimension $d$. We briefly analyze the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory and find that Fermi shells exist for $d>4$., Comment: 24 pages, 22 figures

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We present a novel framework capable of addressing the dark matter problem through freeze-in and freeze-out mechanisms, separately or together, depending on the region of the parameter space considered. In the dark matter dynamics, the model features an interplay of thermal production along with sizeable contribution through feeble decay of associated dark fermionic partner, which finally freezes out to the right relic density for a wide range of masses and couplings. Apart from the fermionic dark matter candidate, the model introduces two charged partners, one fermionic and another scalar, which often have delayed decays leading to distinct characteristics of such long-lived particles (LLP) in the colliders like the LHC. Our analysis shows that within the present scenario, LLP of decay length that could be probed at the LHC experiments are compatible with dark matter masses ranging from a few GeV to close to a TeV, as opposed to the requirement of keV-MeV dark matter in simple FIMP scenarios with LLP. In addition, the model presents hitherto unexplored interesting possibilities in the LLP searches, like (i) LLP to LLP to SM cascade decays, which could be searched for within the LHC detectors and (ii) heavy neutral particle decaying within MATHUSLA with two jets and large missing energy. A supplementary aspect of the model is the presence of a heavy neutrino facilitating Type-I seesaw mechanism without disturbing the dark matter side., Comment: 31 pages, 14 figures, 11 tables, matches version published in JCAP

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We connect two different approaches for calculating functional determinants on quotients of hyperbolic spacetime: the heat kernel method and the quasinormal mode method. For the example of a rotating BTZ background, we show how the image sum in the heat kernel method builds up the logarithms in the quasinormal mode method, while the thermal sum in the quasinormal mode method builds up the integrand of the heat kernel. More formally, we demonstrate how the heat kernel and quasinormal mode methods are linked via the Selberg zeta function. We show that a 1-loop partition function computed using the heat kernel method may be cast as a Selberg zeta function whose zeros encode quasinormal modes. We discuss how our work may be used to predict quasinormal modes on more complicated spacetimes., Comment: 22 pages

High Energy Physics - Theory ,Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
Free fermions form a Fermi surface, which results in non-zero spectral weight at low energy and finite wavevector. In this work, we find similar features in holographic phases dual to strongly coupled quantum superfluid matter. At zero temperature, the phases we consider exhibit semi-local criticality in the IR and all the charge is carried by the scalar condensate outside the black hole horizon. Depending on the value taken by the IR critical exponents, we find Fermi surfaces in the transverse sector, Fermi shells in the longitudinal sector or no spectral weight at all. When there is non-zero transverse spectral weight, the IR can be subject to an instability at finite wavevector, the endpoint of which is likely a spatially modulated phase., Comment: v2: references added and minor edits, published version

Climate change is driving a pervasive global redistribution of the planet's species. Species redistribution poses new questions for the study of ecosystems, conservation science and human societies that require a coordinated and integrated approach. Here we review recent progress, key gaps and strategic directions in this nascent research area, emphasising emerging themes in species redistribution biology, the importance of understanding underlying drivers and the need to anticipate novel outcomes of changes in species ranges. We highlight that species redistribution has manifest implications across multiple temporal and spatial scales and from genes to ecosystems. Understanding range shifts from ecological, physiological, genetic and biogeographical perspectives is essential for informing changing paradigms in conservation science and for designing conservation strategies that incorporate changing population connectivity and advance adaptation to climate change. Species redistributions present challenges for human well-being, environmental management and sustainable development. By synthesising recent approaches, theories and tools, our review establishes an interdisciplinary foundation for the development of future research on species redistribution. Specifically, we demonstrate how ecological, conservation and social research on species redistribution can best be achieved by working across disciplinary boundaries to develop and implement solutions to climate change challenges. Future studies should therefore integrate existing and complementary scientific frameworks while incorporating social science and human-centred approaches. Finally, we emphasise that the best science will not be useful unless more scientists engage with managers, policy makers and the public to develop responsible and socially acceptable options for the global challenges arising from species redistributions.
