Herein, the corrosion performance of different stainless steel (SS) reinforcing bar grades in alkaline solution is presented, including UNS S32205 duplex stainless steel (DSS), UNS S32304 and UNS S32001 lean DDS (LDSS). The electrochemical dissolution kinetics were studied by potentiodynamic polarization and the Tafel slope method. The environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) mechanisms of the different SS grades in the presence of Cl− were revealed with the slow strain rate test (SSRT). The higher activation of the anodic branch and the loss of toughness were related to the austenite-to-ferrite phase ratio. UNS S32205 DSS presented the slowest anodic dissolution kinetics, mainly due to the higher austenite content compared to the other LDSS; however, it suffered a more severe EAC than the UNS S32304 LDSS. In the case of UNS S32001 LDSS, even while having the lowest Ni content (i.e., large ferrite α-phase ratio), it experienced the least decrease in elongation as well as low anodic dissolution kinetics for Cl− contents up to 8 wt.%, where the Cl− threshold was reached. In this work, the passivation and localized corrosion of selective laser melted (SLM) stainless steel 316 L when exposed to high pressures of CO2 with the presence of H2S and Cl− at 25 °C and 125 °C were studied. Depletion of Cr/Mo was observed at the cell interiors and melt-pool boundaries (MPBs) compared to the cell boundaries. Volta potential differences obtained from scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) showed that the MPBs were 8–20 mV lower than the matrix, while the cell interiors were 20–50 mV lower than the cell boundaries. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Mott–Schottky tests indicated a more defective passive film at 125 °C, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the formation of a less protective film with an increased S/O ratio at 125 °C than 25 °C. Initiation of localized corrosion was observed at the MPBs and pits formed after a week of immersion were wider by an order of magnitude at 125 °C than 25 °C, with evidence of cell-interior dissolution. While passivity was observed even at elevated temperatures, local chemical heterogeneities compromised the stability of the film and contributed to localized corrosion in SLM SS316L. In this work, the corrosion performance of a new developed high-entropy alloy (HEA) of the composition Al10Cr30Fe25Mn30Ti5 (at. %) was studied. The corrosion testing of the Al10Cr30Fe25Mn30Ti5 HEA was carried out in 2.5 M NaOH, 0.6 M NaCl, and in 0.5 M H2SO4. The correlation between the microstructure, elemental composition, density, hardness, and corrosion resistance of the new developed Al10Cr30Fe25Mn30Ti5 HEA was investigated. The impedance response showed protective corrosion behavior for the neutral and acidic pH, while the alkaline environment led to a passivity breakdown due to dissolution of Al forming Al(OH)3. The use of nitrite- and nitrate-based inhibitors provides corrosion protection by the development of passive oxide film on the metal surface in reinforced concrete applications. However, the impact of the nitrite and nitrate ratio in the mixture has not been widely studied. In this study, the corrosion protection provided by NaNO2:NaNO3 inhibitor blends with ratios of 0.5:1, 1:1, and 1:0.5 were studied to maximize corrosion inhibition efficiency. The nitrite species imparted higher corrosion protection, as shown by cyclic potentiodynamic polarization, with an icorr of 1.16 × 10–7 A/cm2 for the 1:0.5 mixture, lower than for both the 1:1 and 0.5:1 mixtures. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was also performed, with the 1:0.5 mixture consistently displaying high resistance values, showing an Rct of 1.31 × 105 Ω cm2. The effect of temperature was also assessed; the Ea's of the corrosion reaction were calculated to be 12.1, 9.2, and 4.9 kJ/mol for the 0.5:1, 1:1, and 1:0.5 (NO2−:NO3−) mixtures, respectively. Density functional theory was applied to analyze the molecular properties and to determine the relationship between the quantum properties and corrosion inhibition. The ΔE of NO2− was found to be −5.74 eV, lower than that of NO3− (−5.45 eV), corroborating the experimental results. Lastly, commercially available inhibitor mixtures were investigated and nitrite/nitrate concentrations determined to evaluate their corrosion protection performance; amongst the two inhibitor blends tested, Sika was found to outperform Yara due to its greater NO2− concentration. In this study the effect of thermomechanical treatments in chloride induced pitting corrosion is presented for carbon steel rebars exposed to synthetic fly ash (FA) pore solution. Due to the likely phase transformations that steel reinforcements in concrete experience during the event of a fire, the understanding of the corrosion behavior of such phases is key in predicting the stability of the structure. The motivation for this study arrives from the scarce literature regarding the corrosion behavior of thermomechanically treated steel reinforcements in FA environments and the need for further investigation to understand its mechanism. In order to better understand the effects on the corrosion behavior electrochemical measurements including cyclic potentiodynamic polarization curves (CPP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used. It was found that quenched specimens showed enhanced corrosion kinetics as their icorr values were higher, being of 3.18 × 10−5 and 2.20 × 10−5 A/cm2 for water and oil quenched compared to 2.13 × 10−6 A/cm2 for the as-received. Furthermore, the effective capacitance of the double layer (Ceff,dl) showed the lower stability of the passive film for the quenched specimens, with values of 1.11 × 10−3 µF/cm2 for the as-receive sample that decreased to 8.12 × 10−4 µF/cm2 for the water quenched sample. The anodic charge transfer coefficient in the synthetic FA alkaline pore solution changes from 0.282 to 0.088, for the as-received and water quenched rebars specimens, respectively. These results indicate a lower energy barrier for the anodic dissolution reaction of quenched specimens, indicating that martensite and bainite microstructures promote corrosion process. Enhanced corrosion was found on quenched samples presenting martensite and bainite microstructure as showed by the increased pith depth, with values of 5 μm compared to 1 μm observed in the as-received samples. Herein, pH-sensitive microcapsules containing NaNO 2 corrosion inhibitors for protection of steel reinforced concrete were synthesized via water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) double emulsion using colophony as the wall material. The average microcapsule size was 79.07 μm in diameter and exhibited a high encapsulation efficiency of 83.2%. Study of the release of corrosion inhibitors from microcapsules in deionized water (DI water, pH 6.8), carbonate/bicarbonate buffer solution (CBS, pH 9.1), and simulated concrete pore solution (SCPS, pH 12.6) demonstrates that the microcapsules are sensitive to pH and display higher release in alkaline media. This is the first study of colophony as an encapsulating agent for corrosion inhibitors. Furthermore, the alkaline pH-triggered release shows the suitability of its use in reinforced concrete systems. A wide thermal stability range was also found for the colophony microcapsules up to 100 °C. These high pH environments (CBS and SCPS) present pH values above the p K a of colophony (7.2), thus triggering enhanced inhibitor release by the ionization and deprotonation of colophony shell. The higher release in CBS and SCPS is demonstrated by the increases of the corrosion inhibitor diffusion coefficient by an order of magnitude from 3.30 × 10 -17 m 2 /s in DI water up to 1.66 × 10 -16 m 2 /s for SCPS. The release performance indicates that the proposed approach can be used to encapsulate a variety of inhibitors for the protection of steel reinforcements. After immersion in different pH solutions, the corrosion potentials of a carbon steel substrate with microcapsules containing nitrite were more noble than when immersed without microcapsules and the corrosion current densities showed comparable values to free corrosion inhibitors. The formation of a passive ferric oxide layer was confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
