We discuss the DISORT-based radiative transfer pipeline ('CRISM_LambertAlb') for atmospheric and thermal correction of MRO/CRISM data acquired in multispectral mapping mode (~200 m/pixel, 72 spectral channels). Currently, in this phase-one version of the system, we use aerosol optical depths, surface temperatures, and lower-atmospheric temperatures, all from climatology derived from Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer (MGS-TES) data, and surface altimetry derived from MGS Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA). The DISORT-based model takes as input the dust and ice aerosol optical depths (scaled to the CRISM wavelength range), the surface pressures (computed from MOLA altimetry, MGS-TES lower-atmospheric thermometry, and Viking-based pressure climatology), the surface temperatures, the reconstructed instrumental photometric angles, and the measured I/F spectrum, and then outputs a Lambertian albedo spectrum. The Lambertian albedo spectrum is valuable geologically since it allows the mineralogical composition to be estimated. Here, I/F is defined as the ratio of the radiance measured by CRISM to the solar irradiance at Mars divided by $\pi$. After discussing the capabilities and limitations of the pipeline software system, we demonstrate its application on several multispectral data cubes: the outer northern ice cap of Mars, Tyrrhena Terra, and near the landing site for the Phoenix mission. For the icy spectra near the northern polar cap, aerosols need to be included in order to properly correct for the CO_2 absorption in the H_{2}O ice bands at wavelengths near 2.0 $\mu$m. In future phases of software development, we intend to use CRISM data directly in order to retrieve the spatiotemporal maps of aerosol optical depths, surface pressure and surface temperature.

Minimum nighttime temperature at the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) landing sites may limit power available for science activities and thus mission lifetime. Here, 1 m air temperature at the end of the nominal 90 sol primary mission are derived for the four primary and three previously considered MER landing sites based on Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emmision Spectrometer thermal inertia and albedo, estimated opacity, and predictions of air temperature from a one-dimensional atmospheric model.

The Galileo Photopolarimeter-Radiometer (PPR), when used in the radiometry mode which is most often used at Io, is a long-wavelength infrared single-aperture photometer. It is sensitive to temperatures from about 60 to several hundred K, and is thus useful for studying the volcanoes and background temperatures on Io. PPR can take raster scan images when it is the primary instrument being used (these data were discussed last year, see Rathbun et al., 2002). It can also take data in ride-along mode in conjunction with another remote sensing instrument (either SSI or NIMS) producing one-dimensional temperature scans. The best data of this type were taken during the close approach flybys during orbits I24, I25, I27, I31, I32, and I33 and include measurements of the volcanoes Pele, Prometheus, Pillan, Zamama, Tvashtar, Daedalus, Amarani, Gish Bar, Isum, Emakong, Tupan, and Tohil.

Recent Galileo PPR (Photo-Polarimeter Radiometer) results will be shown, including global day and nighttime maps, high latitude regional maps, and high-resolution scans across hotspots and from pole to pole. SO2 vapor pressure, global heatflow, and hotspot power outputs are estimated. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

The Horizon Science Experiment (HORSE) utilizes the Mars Horizon Sensor Assembly (MHSA) on the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) orbiter to measure 15-micron band thermal emission from the Martian atmosphere. During the first two phases of aerobraking, from September 1997 to May 1998, and from September 1998 to March 1999, one of the four MGS quadrants was pointed well onto the planet consistently during the near-periapsis aerobraking passes, allowing the device to obtain data on the latitudinal variation of middle atmospheric temperature (0.2 - 2.0 mbar). Of particular interest during the first phase (L(sub s) = 182 - 300 deg) were the effects of a prominent dust storm at L(sub s) =224 deg, and wavelike behavior in the strong temperature gradient near the north polar cap. Photopolarimetric-Radiometer (PPR) 200-km resolution maps of daytime temperatures on Ganymede show the expected anticorrelation with albedo, but morning temperatures are about 10K warmer than expected.

We present the first comprehensive discussion of the south seasonal polar cap spectra obtained by the Mariner7 Infrared Spectrometer in the short wavelength region (2-4 µm).

1994 marks the 25th anniversary of the Mariner 6 and 7 flyby missions to Mars. Despite its age, the Mariner 6,7 Infrared Spectrometer (IRS) data are a unique set of measurements that can provide important information about the Martian surface, atmospheric, and atmospheric aerosol composition. For certain mid-IR wavelengths, the IRS spectra are the only such spacecraft data obtained for Mars. At other wavelengths, IRS measured surface regions different from those measured by Mariner 9 or Phobos 2 and under different dust opacity conditions. We are interested in examining the IRS reflectance data in the 1.8 to 3.0 micron region because there are numerous diagnostic absorption features at these wavelengths that could be indicative of hydrated silicate minerals or of carbonate- or sulfate-bearing minerals. Groundbased telescopic data and recent Phobos ISM measurements have provided controversial and somewhat contradictory evidence for the existence of mineralogic absorption features at these wavelengths. Our goal is to determine whether any such features can be seen in the IRS data and to use their presence or absence to re-assess the quality and interpretations of previous telescopic and spacecraft measurements.

Following earlier work to map the dust opacity of the Mars atmosphere, a number of separate studies have been performed employing the radiometric measurements of the Viking IR Thermal Mappers. These efforts have resulted in a new perspective on the atmospheric dust distribution during the Viking Mission, as well as quantitative measures useful in the modeling of likely behavior at other times, and improved boundary conditions for circulation models of Mars. The significant findings from these studies are presented.

Estimates of the mass of dust suspended in the Martian atmosphere are derived from global and regional 9 opacity maps produced from Viking Infrared Thermal Mapper data.

The Mariner 9 and Viking missions provided abundant evidence that eolian processes are active over much of the surface of Mars. Past studies have demonstrated that variations in regional albedo and wind streak patterns are indicative of sediment transport through a region, while thermal inertia data (derived from the Viking Infrared Thermal Mapper (IRTM) datasets) are indicative of the degree of surface mantling by dust deposits. We are making use of the method developed by T. Z. Martin to determine dust opacity from IRTM thermal observations. We have developed a radiative transfer model that allows corrections for the effects of atmospheric dust loading on observations of surface albedo to be made. This approach to determining 'dust-corrected surface albedo' incorporates the atmospheric dust opacity, the single-scattering albedo and particle phase function of atmospheric dust, the bidirectional reflectance of the surface, and accounts for variable lighting and viewing geometry.

Mapping of dust opacity of the Martian atmosphere, using the silicate-induced absorption of 9 micron radiation, was performed with the Viking Infrared Thermal Mapper (IRTM) data for several local dust storms and in a global sense. We present here the first results from an effort to extend the earlier mapping work to the period of the 1977b major storm, and to concentrate attention on the details of opacity behavior during the initial phases of the 1977a and b storms.

Martian dust plays a key role in determining the current climate of Mars, and is suspected of having had a major influence on the evolution of the surface and the history of climatic conditions on the planet. From spacecraft and ground-based observations, some understanding has been acquired of the styles and frequency of dust motion in the atmosphere and at the surface, of atmospheric dust loading, dust particle properties, and their variability. Limited constraints have also been derived for the volumes and ages of some potential dust reservoirs on the surface. These data are adequate to frame questions about the seasonal and long-term cycles of dust of Mars. Additional data are needed to place quantitative constraints on components of these cycles, on their possible linkage to one another, and to draw conclusions from the dust budget about the climate history of Mars.

The Mariner 6/7 Infrared Spectrometer (IRS) experiment data from the 1969 Mars flyby encounters represent a valuable source of information about the IR reflection/emission spectrum of Mars in the 1.9 and 14.4 micron region. During 1990, the wavelength calibration of the IRS data was completely redone, using information from inflight spectra of Mars taken through a polystyrene film and from the locations of Martian CO2 bands. The response functions of the two instruments were then rederived using laboratory black body spectra. Also, a particular approach was taken to study the IRS data in which the effects of uncertain wavelength and intensity calibration can be minimized. This involves doing ratios of spectra. These are of particular value when applied to study contrasts between various albedo domains on the Mars surface and between spectra with differing emission angle. The latter provide a means of assessing the contribution of the atmosphere and airborne dust to the spectra. Given here are graphs showing two near infrared radiance spectra for very different albedo regions and a ratio of two spectra obtained at very different total solar pathlength (airmass).

The limited set of high-resolution observations of the 8-12 micron thermal emission from Mars' equatorial regions by the Termoskan instrument onboard the Phobos '88 spacecraft in February and March of 1989 is considered. Observations were also simultaneously acquired in the 0.5 to 1.0 micron region. A combined U.S. and Soviet scientific team made a preliminary quantitative evaluation of about 25 percent of the entire data set. It is found that there is a close agreement with the Viking Infrared Thermal Mapper brightness temperatures, confirming the accuracy of the Termoskan system and calibration. A novel pattern of emission from particles was observed in the morning and assumed to be water or ice. Thermal emission from surface features is varied and distinct down to the limit of resolution. The presence of unusually insulating material has been detected in the uppermost fraction of a millimeter of the Martian surface in places where the shadow of Phobos briefly eclipsed by the surface.

Thermal observations of Mars are reviewed focusing on surface and atmospheric temperatures. Data obtained indicate that the effect of increasing dust in the atmosphere is to reduce diurnal temperature variation at the surface, while enhancing atmospheric thermal variation. Atmospheric thermal effects can be induced by global dust storms even in regions of polar night. Maximum temperatures occur near the equator in summer or at local sites with sunward facing slopes, where low surface thermal inertias make it possible to achieve values up to about 310 K. Radiation and convection in the daytime affect atmospheric temperatures near the surface, which are limited by radiation at night. Results of thermal observations confirm that Mars' thermal state and climate can significantly vary from year to year, due to the variation in dust activity.

An analytical technique is presented for the deriving Mars atmosphere opacity from data furnished by the IR Thermal Mapper (IRTM) instruments on the Viking landers. Each IRTM features four telescopes for viewing Mars in six spectral bands and seven spatial fields of view. The present study focuses on 20 microns measurements of the thermal inertia, 0.3-3.0 microns data for the surface albedo, and, finally, the 7, 9, and 15 microns data for the actual opacity derivations. The model takes into account the atmospheric temperature profile, scattering by dust, the surface emissivity and the variation of the surface/atmosphere temperature discontinuity. Analyses are carried out of the possible error factors and the model is used to generate opacity histories for the two Viking Lander sites. The results, when compared with other astronomical data, indicate that the method is sufficiently accurate to use opacity data to analyze the processes of storm genesis and to study local storms.

Video camera uses solid-state imaging devices and light filters to bring out subtle spectral differences between healthy and stressed vegetation differences not readily detectable with infrared film cameras. Camera employs two detector arrays. Video camera made small and easily portable. Eliminates need for refrigeration of film before use, and provides instantaneous output with no delay for film development.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service completed a feasibility study that examined the potential uses of advanced technology in forest fires mapping and detection. The current and future (1990's) information needs in forest fire management were determined through interviews. Analysis shows that integrated information gathering and processing is needed. The emerging technologies that were surveyed and identified as possible candidates for use in an end to end system include ""push broom'' sensor arrays, automatic georeferencing, satellite communication links, near real or real time image processing, and data integration. Matching the user requirements and the technologies yielded a ""strawman'' system configuration. The feasibility study recommends and outlines the implementation of the next phase for this project, a two year, conceptual design phase to define a system that warrants continued development.

Data from the 15 micron band of CO2 readings with the two Viking IR thermal mappers are discussed. Contrasts were observed to be strong between clear and dusty conditions, with a latitudinal gradient and a diurnal amplitude variation in the winter southern hemisphere. Consistency was found in zonal mean temperatures in the absence of dust, with a peak temperature of 180 K at the poles and a diurnal amplitude of 15 K at the equator. Large temperature increases occur in dusty conditions, with global dust storms being present in the northern, but not southern, hemisphere. Estimations of the surface and atmospheric temperatures are calculated in order to derive optical depths from the IR measurements of atmospheric opacity. The optical depth around the whole planet is found to be relatively uniform at any given moment. Finally, the diurnal behavior of the brightness temperature is outlined for 1.4 Mars years.

A Mars average data set (MADS) has been constructed from thermal and albedo measurements of the Viking Infrared Thermal Mapper; by merging information from all longitudes, and ensuring reasonably complete longitudinal sampling, a representation of mean Mars behavior is obtained. Brightness temperatures at 7, 9, 11, 15, and 20 microns and albedo information in the band 0.3-3.0 microns have been binned using 2 deg latitude strips, 24 times of day, 3 emission angle intervals, and 23 nonoverlapping solar longitude periods covering 1.43 Mars years starting at a solar longitude of 84 deg. The MADS is ideally suited to parametric study of latitudinal, diurnal, angular, and seasonal dependences. Data are presented for surface thermal and albedo behavior in clear and dusty atmospheric conditions; the thermal response of the atmospheric temperature to a major dust storm is found to be consistent with Mariner 9 data from the 1971 storm. Examples of use of the MADS, which is available through the Mars Consortium, indicate how averaged data reveal specific surface and atmospheric phenomena.

Observations of the S(1) line of the pressure-induced fundamental band of H2 in the spectra of Saturn and Jupiter are analyzed by comparing the observed line shape with predictions of both a reflecting-layer model and a homogeneous-scattering model of the atmospheres. Upper and lower limits are derived for the values of relative intensity that occur between 5000 and 5100 kaysers, the percent absorption due to H2 at 5100 kaysers is estimated, and it is established that methane and ammonia cannot account for the broad absorption attributed to hydrogen. The comparison with the model atmospheres shows that the reflecting-layer model appears to give the best fit to the Saturn line profile for temperatures near 150 K, while both models provide good fits to the Jupiter data, but for widely differing temperatures. Difficulties encountered in determining the true continuum level, especially for Jupiter, are discussed.

Viking infrared thermal mapper observations of Mars in the 15-micron CO2 band reveal global atmospheric thermal behavior at the 0.3to 0.6-mbar level. Dust entrained by storms produces major modification of diurnal and latitudinal structure in the brightness temperature. In the dust-laden atmosphere of southern spring and summer 1977, the brightness temperature was a maximum in late afternoon at a latitude well south of the subsolar latitude. Diurnal amplitude was as great as 30 K, while diurnal mean temperatures exceeded 220 K. Over the northern winter polar cap, the brightness temperature increased dramatically following the second global dust storm of 1977; even in regions of polar night the change was up to 80 K. Inversions of similar magnitude resulted, and the change in downward radiance was sufficient to modify substantially the rate of CO2 condensation at the surface.

Infrared observations of Mars by the Viking infrared thermal mapper (IRTM) are presented for conditions of both a relatively clear and a dust-laden atmosphere. The 7-, 9-, 11-, and 20-micron bands of the IRTM respond differently to radiation emitted through and by a dusty atmosphere, permitting characterization of the global atmospheric state, monitoring of secular changes, and derivation of optical depth information. Surface temperature behavior is found to be greatly modified by the diminution of insolation and thermal blanketing resulting from global dust storms. Brightness temperature at 7 microns is employed to estimate surface temperatures in the presence of dust absorption. The difference (T7) is indicative of airborne dust when thermal contrast exists between the surface and atmosphere. The diurnal behavior of T7-T9 reveals changes in the contrast; the sign of the differential reverses as the surface, warmer than the atmosphere in daytime, becomes cooler than the atmosphere at night. IRTM observations of local areas at varying emission angle yield optical depths indicative of global trends. Two global dust storms in 1977 produced large optical depth changes: at 9 microns the optical depth became as large as 2.0.

The Infrared Thermal Mapping (IRTM) instruments aboard the two Viking Orbiters carry an atmospheric channel that measures thermal emission in the 15-micron band of CO2. The IRTM experiment measures bolometric albedo in a 0.3-3.0 micron passband and brightness temperatures at 7, 9, 11, and 20 microns. This paper presents selected findings from the Viking nominal and extended missions.

The behavior of Mars as observed by the Viking infrared thermal mapper (IRTM) is considered. The IRTM is a 28-channel, 4-telescope radiometer that operated in six spectral bands. The studies considered include observations from the interplanetary phase through data collection on November 7, 1976. During this interval, thermal mapping of the whole Martian surface has been possible. Attention is given to polar temperatures, global albedos, predawn temperatures, a thermal inertia contour map, geometry considerations, clouds, aspects of predawn warming, and observations of earth.

Selected observations made with the Viking infrared thermal mapper after the first landing are reported. Atmospheric temperatures measured at the latitude of the Viking 2 landing site (48 deg N) over most of a Martian day reveal a diurnal variation of at least 15 K, with peak temperatures occurring near 2.2 hours after noon, implying significant absorption of sunlight in the lower 30 km of the atmosphere by entrained dust. The summit temperature of Arsia Mons varies by a factor of nearly two each day; large diurnal temperature variation is characteristic of the south Tharsis upland and implies the presence of low-thermal-inertia material. The thermal inertia of material on the floors of several typical large craters is found to be higher than for the surrounding terrain; this suggests that craters are somehow effective in sorting aeolian material. Brightness temperatures of the Viking 1 landing area decrease at large emissions angles; the intensity of reflected sunlight shows a more complex dependence on geometry than expected, implying atmospheric as well as surface scattering.

Broadband thermal and reflectance observations of the Martian north polar region in late summer yield temperatures for the residual polar cap near 205 K with albedos near 43 percent. The residual cap and several outlying smaller deposits are water ice with included dirt; there is no evidence for any permanent carbon dioxide polar cap.

The Viking infrared thermal mapper measures the thermal emission of the Martian surface and atmosphere and the total reflected sunlight. With the high resolution and dense coverage being achieved, planetwide thermal structure is apparent at large and small scales. The thermal behavior of the best-observed areas, the landing sites, cannot be explained by simple homogeneous models. The data contain clear indications for the relevance of additional factors such as detailed surface texture and the occurrence of clouds. Areas in the polar night have temperatures distinctly lower than the CO2 condensation point at the surface pressure. This observation implies that the annual atmospheric condensation is less than previously assumed and that either thick CO2 clouds exist at the 20-kilometer level or that the polar atmosphere is locally enriched by noncondensable gases.
