1. Red Stellar Populations and Dust Extinction toward W3

Abstract: We explore red stellar populations toward the W3 giant molecular cloud through the use of optical-to-infrared (IR) photometry and Gaia DR 3 data, simultaneously characterizing stellar content and properties of dust in the molecular medium. We use a Rayleigh-Jeans Color Excess (RJCE) method modified to de-redden stellar observations of both red giants (RGs) and OB stars, and construct an IR Hertzsprung-Russell diagram validated against the Besanccon Galactic model. Taking advantage of the near-universal IR interstellar extinction law and precise Gaia measurements, we develop a method for obtaining the spectral classification, foreground extinction, and distance moduli of stars, validated by spectroscopically-confirmed OB stars. We constrain the observed parallax and proper motion of OB stars in W3, demonstrating the importance of considering systematic effects in the parallax bias, and assign parallax- and proper motion-based cloud membership to our stellar samples. While it has been assumed that all spectroscopic OB stars are inside the W3 cloud, we find evidence of seven background B stars and three potential runaway OB stars. The methods developed here based on known stellar populations enable us to identify 82 new OB candidates that are confidently within the cloud. We quantify several dust-to-dust empirical correlations, in particular the IR color excess $E(H-[4.5])$ and the optical depth $\tau_1$ of submillimeter dust emission at 1 THz using RGs behind W3, measuring a best fit of $E(H-[4.5]) = (1.07 \pm 0.04) \times 10^3 \, \tau_{1,\,\mathrm{HOTT}} + (0.00 \pm 0.02)$ mags., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ, 39 pages, 20 figures

2. Polar orbits around the newly formed Earth-Moon binary system

Abstract: We examine the dynamics and stability of circumbinary particles orbiting around the Earth-Moon binary system. The moon formed close to the Earth (semi-major axis $a_{EM}\approx 3\, R_\oplus$) and expanded through tides to its current day semi-major axis ($a_{ EM}= 60\, R_\oplus$). Circumbinary orbits that are polar or highly inclined to the Earth-Moon orbit are subject to two competing effects: (i) nodal precession about the Earth-Moon eccentricity vector and (ii) Kozai-Lidov oscillations of eccentricity and inclination driven by the Sun. While we find that there are no stable polar orbits around the Earth-Moon orbit with the current day semi-major axis, polar orbits were stable immediately after the formation of the Moon, at the time when there was a lot of debris around the system, up to when the semi-major axis reached about $a_{ EM}\approx 10\, R_\oplus$. 3. On the origin of polar planets around single stars

Abstract: The Rossiter-McLaughlin effect measures the misalignment between a planet's orbital plane and its host star's rotation plane. Around 10$\%$ of planets exhibit misalignments in the approximate range $80 - 125^\circ$, with their origin remaining a mystery. On the other hand, large misalignments may be common in eccentric circumbinary systems due to misaligned discs undergoing polar alignment. If the binary subsequently merges, a polar circumbinary disc -- along with any planets that form within it -- may remain inclined near 90$^{\circ}$ to the merged star's rotation. To test this hypothesis, we present $N$-body simulations of the evolution of a polar circumbinary debris disc comprised of test particles around an eccentric binary during a binary merger that is induced by tidal dissipation. After the merger, the disc particles remain on near-polar orbits. Interaction of the binary with the polar-aligned gas disc may be required to bring the binary to the small separations that trigger the merger by tides. Our findings imply that planets forming in discs that are polar-aligned to the orbit of a high-eccentricity binary may, following the merger of the binary, provide a possible origin for the population of near-polar planets around single stars., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The Super-Kamiokande and T2K collaborations present a joint measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters from their atmospheric and beam neutrino data. It uses a common interaction model for events overlapping in neutrino energy and correlated detector systematic uncertainties between the two datasets, which are found to be compatible. Using 3244.4 days of atmospheric data and a beam exposure of $19.7(16.3) \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in (anti)neutrino mode, the analysis finds a 1.9$\sigma$ exclusion of CP-conservation (defined as $J_{CP}=0$) and a preference for the normal mass ordering., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

5. Decretion disc size in Be/X-ray binaries depends upon the disc aspect ratio

Abstract: With three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations we show that the size of the decretion disc and the structure of the accretion flow onto the neutron star in a Be/X-ray binary strongly depends upon the disc aspect ratio, $H/R$. We simulate a Be star disc that is coplanar to the orbit of a circularly or moderately eccentric neutron star companion, thereby maximising the effects of tidal truncation. For low disc aspect ratio, $H/R\lesssim 0.1$, the disc is efficiently tidally truncated by the neutron star. Most material that escapes the Roche lobe of the Be star is accreted by the neutron star through tidal streams. For larger disc aspect ratio, the outflow rate through the Be star disc is higher, tidal truncation becomes inefficient, the disc fills the Roche lobe and extends to the orbit of the companion. Some material escapes the binary as a gas stream that begins near the L2 point. While the accretion rate onto the neutron star is higher, the fraction of the outflow that is accreted by the neutron star is smaller. Low density Be star discs are expected to be approximately isothermal, such that $H/R$ increases with radius. 6. Well-posedness and long-term behaviour of buffered flows in infinite networks

Abstract: We consider a transport problem on an infinite metric graph and discuss its well-posedness and long-term behaviour under the condition that the mass flow is buffered in at least one of the vertices. In order to show the well-posedness of the problem, we employ the theory of $C_0$-semigroups and prove a Desch--Schappacher type perturbation theorem for dispersive semigroups. Investigating the long-term behaviour of the system, we prove irreducibility of the semigroup under the assumption that the underlying graph is strongly connected and an additional spectral condition on its adjacency matrix. Moreover, we employ recent results about the convergence of stochastic semigroups that dominate a kernel operator to prove that the solutions converge strongly to equilibrium. Finally, we prove that the solutions converge uniformly under more restrictive assumptions.

7. Inclination instability of circumbinary planets

Abstract: We analyze a tilt instability of the orbit of an outer planet in a two planet circumbinary system that we recently reported. The binary is on an eccentric orbit and the inner circumbinary planet is on a circular polar orbit that causes the the binary to undergo apsidal precession. The outer circumbinary planet is initially on a circular or eccentric orbit that is coplanar with respect to the binary. We apply a Hamiltonian in quadrupole order of the binary potential to show that the tilt instability is the result of a secular resonance in which the apsidal precession rate of the binary matches the nodal precession rate of the outer planet. Resonance is possible because the polar inner planet causes the apsidal precession of the binary to be retrograde. The outer planet periodically undergoes large tilt oscillations for which we analytically determine the initial evolution and maximum inclination. Following a typically relatively short adjustment phase, the tilt grows exponentially in time at a characteristic rate that is of order the absolute value of the binary apsidal precession rate. The analytic results agree well with numerical simulations. This instability is analogous to the Kozai-Lidov instability, but applied to a circumbinary object. The instability fails to operate if the binary mass ratio is too extreme. Abstract: Preceding a core-collapse supernova, various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming core-collapse supernova can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-supernova neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande on pre-supernova neutrino detection. A pre-supernova alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the Super-Kamiokande detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-supernova neutrino signal from a 15 M$_{\odot}$ star within 510 pc of the Earth, at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. Abstract: PurposeMultiple myeloma is a plasma cell malignancy with an unmet clinical need for improved imaging methods and therapeutics. Recently, we identified CD46 as an overexpressed therapeutic target in multiple myeloma and developed the antibody YS5, which targets a cancer-specific epitope on this protein. We further developed the CD46-targeting PET probe [89Zr]Zr-DFO-YS5 for imaging and [225Ac]Ac-DOTA-YS5 for radiopharmaceutical therapy of prostate cancer. These prior studies suggested the feasibility of the CD46 antigen as a theranostic target in multiple myeloma. Herein, we validate [89Zr]Zr-DFO-YS5 for immunoPET imaging and [225Ac]Ac-DOTA-YS5 for radiopharmaceutical therapy of multiple myeloma in murine models.Experimental designIn vitro saturation binding was performed using the CD46 expressing MM.1S multiple myeloma cell line. ImmunoPET imaging using [89Zr]Zr-DFO-YS5 was performed in immunodeficient (NSG) mice bearing subcutaneous and systemic multiple myeloma xenografts. For radioligand therapy, [225Ac]Ac-DOTA-YS5 was prepared, and both dose escalation and fractionated dose treatment studies were performed in mice bearing MM1.S-Luc systemic xenografts. Tumor burden was analyzed using BLI, and body weight and overall survival were recorded to assess antitumor effect and toxicity.Results[89Zr]Zr-DFO-YS5 demonstrated high affinity for CD46 expressing MM.1S multiple myeloma cells (Kd = 16.3 nmol/L). In vitro assays in multiple myeloma cell lines demonstrated high binding, and bioinformatics analysis of human multiple myeloma samples revealed high CD46 expression. [89Zr]Zr-DFO-YS5 PET/CT specifically detected multiple myeloma lesions in a variety of models, with low uptake in controls, including CD46 knockout (KO) mice or multiple myeloma mice using a nontargeted antibody. In the MM.1S systemic model, localization of uptake on PET imaging correlated well with the luciferase expression from tumor cells. A treatment study using [225Ac]Ac-DOTA-YS5 in the MM.1S systemic model demonstrated a clear tumor volume and survival benefit in the treated groups.ConclusionsOur study showed that the CD46-targeted probe [89Zr]Zr-DFO-YS5 can successfully image CD46-expressing multiple myeloma xenografts in murine models, and [225Ac]Ac-DOTA-YS5 can effectively inhibit the growth of multiple myeloma. These results demonstrate that CD46 is a promising theranostic target for multiple myeloma, with the potential for clinical translation.

Abstract: We study the effects of general relativity (GR) on the evolution and alignment of circumbinary disks around binaries on all scales. We implement relativistic apsidal precession of the binary into the hydrodynamics code {\sc phantom}. We find that the effects of GR can suppress the stable polar alignment of a circumbinary disk, depending on how the relativistic binary apsidal precession timescale compares to the disk nodal precession timescale. Studies of circumbinary disk evolution typically ignore the effects of GR which is an appropriate simplification for low mass or widely separated binary systems. In this case, polar alignment occurs providing that the disks initial misalignment is sufficiently large. However, systems with a very short relativistic precession timescale cannot polar align and instead move toward coplanar alignment. In the intermediate regime where the timescales are similar, the outcome depends upon the properties of the disk. Abstract: With hydrodynamic simulations we show that a coplanar disc around one component of a binary can be unstable to global tilting when the disc orbits in a retrograde direction relative to the binary. The disc experiences the largest inclination growth relative to the binary orbit in the outermost radii of the disc, closest to the companion. This tilt instability also occurs for test particles. A retrograde disc is much larger than a prograde disc since it is not tidally truncated and instead spreads outwards to the orbit of the companion. The coplanar retrograde disc remains circular while a coplanar prograde disc can become eccentric. We suggest that the inclination instability is due to a disc resonance caused by the interaction of the tilt with the tidal field of the binary. This model is applicable to Be/X-ray binaries in which the Be star disc may be retrograde relative to the binary orbit if there was a sufficiently strong kick from the supernova that formed the neutron star companion. 20. Mergers of black hole binaries driven by misaligned circumbinary discs

Abstract: With hydrodynamical simulations we examine the evolution of a highly misaligned circumbinary disc around a black hole binary including the effects of general relativity. We show that a disc mass of just a few percent of the binary mass can significantly increase the binary eccentricity through von-Zeipel--Kozai-Lidov (ZKL) like oscillations provided that the disc lifetime is longer than the ZKL oscillation timescale. The disc begins as a relatively narrow ring of material far from the binary and spreads radially. When the binary becomes highly eccentric, disc breaking forms an inner disc ring that quickly aligns to polar. The polar ring drives fast retrograde apsidal precession of the binary that weakens the ZKL effect. This allows the binary eccentricity to remain at a high level and may significantly shorten the black hole merger time. 21. All We Are Is Dust In The WIM: Constraints on Dust Properties in the Milky Way's Warm Ionized Medium

Abstract: We present a comparison of the presence and properties of dust in two distinct phases of the Milky Way's interstellar medium: the warm neutral medium (WNM) and the warm ionized medium (WIM). Using distant pulsars at high Galactic latitudes and vertical distance ($|b| > 40\deg$, $D \sin|b| > 2 \mathrm{\,\, kpc}$) as probes, we measure their dispersion measures and the neutral hydrogen component of the warm neutral medium ($\text{WNM}_\text{HI}$) using HI column density. Together with dust intensity along these same sightlines, we separate the respective dust contributions of each ISM phase in order to determine whether the ionized component contributes to the dust signal. We measure the temperature ($T$), spectral index ($\beta$), and dust opacity ($\tau/N_{H}$) in both phases. We find $T~{\text{(WNM}_\text{HI})}=20^{+3}_{-2}$~K, $\beta~{\text{(WNM}_\text{HI})} = 1.5\pm{0.4}$, and $\tau_{\text{353}}/N_{H}~{\text{(WNM}_\text{HI})}=(1.0\pm0.1)\times 10^{-26}$~cm$^2$. Assuming that the temperature and spectral index are the same in both the WNM$_\text{HI}$ and WIM, and given our simple model that widely separated lines-of-sight can be fit together, we find evidence that there is a dust signal associated with the ionized gas and $\tau_{\text{353}}/N_{H}~\text{(WIM)}=(0.3\pm0.3)\times 10^{-26}$, which is about three times smaller than $\tau_{\text{353}}/N_{H}~{\text{(WNM}_\text{HI})}$. 22. Black hole mergers driven by a captured low-mass companion

Abstract: Increased eccentricity of a black hole binary leads to reduced merger times. With n-body simulations and analytic approximations including the effects of general relativity (GR), we show that even a low mass companion orbiting a black hole binary can cause significant eccentricity oscillations of the binary as a result of the Kozai-Lidov mechanism. A companion with a mass as low as about 1% of the binary mass can drive the binary eccentricity up to >~ 0.8, while a mass of a few percent can drive eccentricities greater than 0.98. For low mass companions, this mechanism requires the companion to be on an orbit that is closer to retrograde than to prograde to the binary orbit and this may occur through capture of the third body. The effects of GR limit the radial range for the companion for which this mechanism works for the closest binaries. 23. Disc precession in Be/X-ray binaries drives superorbital variations of outbursts and colour

Abstract: Superorbital periods that are observed in the brightness of Be/X-ray binaries may be driven by a misaligned and precessing Be star disc. We examine how the precessing disc model explains the superorbital variation of (i) the magnitude of the observed X-ray outbursts and (ii) the observed colour. With hydrodynamical simulations we show that the magnitude of the average accretion rate on to the neutron star, and therefore the X-ray outbursts, can vary by over an order of magnitude over the superorbital period for Be star spin-orbit misalignments $\gtrsim 70^\circ$ as a result of weak tidal truncation. Most Be/X-ray binaries are redder at optical maximum when the disc is viewed closest to face-on since the disc adds a large red component to the emission. However, A0538-66 is redder at optical minimum. This opposite behaviour requires an edge-on disc at optical minimum and a radially narrow disc such that it does not add a large red signature when viewed face-on. For A0538-66, the misalignment of the disc to the binary orbit must be about $70-80^\circ$ and the inclination of the binary orbit to the line of sight must be similarly high, although restricted to $<75^\circ$ by the absence of X-ray eclipses., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

24. Diagnostics from polarization of scattered optical light from Galactic infrared cirrus

Abstract: We propose polarization of scattered optical light from intermediate Galactic latitude infrared cirrus as a new diagnostic to constrain models of interstellar dust and the anisotropic interstellar radiation field (aISRF). For single scattering by a sphere, with Mie scattering phase functions for intensity and polarized intensity for a dust model at a given wavelength (Sloan $r$ and $g$ bands), and with models of anisotropic illumination from the entire sky (represented in HEALPix), we develop the formalism for calculating useful summary parameters for an integrated flux nebula (IFN): average of the phase function weighted by the illumination, polarization angle ($\psi$), and polarization fraction ($p$). To demonstrate the diagnostic discrimination of polarization from scattered light, we report on the effects of different anisotropic illumination models and different dust models on the summary parameters for the Spider IFN. The summary parameters are also sensitive to the IFN location, as we illustrate using FRaNKIE illumination models. For assessing the viability of dust and aISRF models, we find that observations of $\psi$ and $p$ of scattered light are indeed powerful new diagnostics to complement joint modeling of the intensity of scattered light (related to the average phase function) and the intensity of thermal dust emission. However, optically thin IFNs that can be modelled using single scattering are faint and $p$ is not large, as it could be with Rayleigh scattering, and so these observations need to be carried out with care and precision. 25. AC Her: Evidence of the first polar circumbinary planet

Abstract: We examine the geometry of the post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star binary AC Her and its circumbinary disk. We show that the observations describe a binary orbit that is perpendicular to the disk with an angular momentum vector that is within $9^\circ$ of the binary eccentricity vector, meaning that the disk is close to a stable polar alignment. The most likely explanation for the very large inner radius of the dust is a planet within the circumbinary disk. This is therefore both the first reported detection of a polar circumbinary disk around a post-AGB binary and the first evidence of a polar circumbinary planet. We consider the dynamical constraints on the circumbinary disk size and mass. The polar circumbinary disk feeds circumstellar disks with gas on orbits that are highly inclined with respect to the binary orbit plane. 26. Tilted circumbinary planetary systems as efficient progenitors of free-floating planets

Abstract: The dominant mechanism for generating free-floating planets has so far remained elusive. One suggested mechanism is that planets are ejected from planetary systems due to planet-planet interactions. However, instability around a single star requires a very compactly spaced planetary system. We find that around binary star systems instability can occur even with widely separated planets that are on tilted orbits relative to the binary orbit due to combined effects of planet-binary and planet-planet interactions, especially if the binary is on an eccentric orbit. We investigate the orbital stability of planetary systems with various planet masses and architectures. We find that the stability of the system depends upon the mass of the highest mass planet. The order of the planets in the system does not significantly affect stability but, generally, the most massive planet remains stable and the lower mass planets are ejected. The minimum planet mass required to trigger the instability is about that of Neptune for a circular orbit binary and a super-Earth of about $10$ Earth masses for highly eccentric binaries. Hence, we suggest that planet formation around misaligned binaries can be an efficient formation mechanism for free-floating planets. While most observed free-floating planets are giant planets, we predict that there should be more low-mass free floating planets that are as yet unobserved than higher mass planets., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

27. Warps and Breaks in Circumbinary Discs

Abstract: Disc warping, and possibly disc breaking, has been observed in protoplanetary discs around both single and multiple stars. Large warps can break the disc, producing multiple observational signatures. In this work, we use comparisons of disc timescales to derive updated formulae for disc breaking, with better predictions as to when and where a disc is expected to break and how many breaks could occur. Disc breaking is more likely for discs with small inner cavities, cooler temperatures, and steeper power-law profiles, such that thin, polar-aligning discs are more likely to break. We test our analytic formulae using 3D grid-based simulations of protoplanetary discs warped by the gravitational torque of an inner binary. We reproduce the expected warp behaviors in different viscosity regimes and observe disc breaking at locations in agreement with our derived equations. As our simulations only show disc breaking when disc viscosity is low, we also consider a viscous criterion for disc breaking, where rapid alignment to the precession vector can prevent a break by reducing the maximum misalignment between neighboring rings. We apply these results to the GW Orionis circumtriple disc, and find that the precession induced from the central stars can break the disc if it is relatively thin. We expect repeated or multiple disc breaking to occur for discs with sufficiently steep power law profiles. 28. Measurement-induced phase transition in a single-body tight-binding model

Abstract: We study the statistical properties of a single free quantum particle evolving coherently on a discrete lattice in ${\rm d}$ spatial dimensions where every lattice site is additionally subject to continuous measurement of the occupation number. Our numerical results indicate that the system undergoes a Measurement-induced Phase Transition (MiPT) for ${\rm d}>1$ from a $\textit{delocalized}$ to a $\textit{localized}$ phase as the measurement strength $\gamma$ is increased beyond a critical value $\gamma_{c}$. In the language of surface growth, the delocalized phase corresponds to a $\textit{smooth}$ phase while the localized phase corresponds to a $\textit{rough}$ phase. Abstract: We report an updated measurement of the $\nu_{\mu}$-induced, and the first measurement of the $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$-induced coherent charged pion production cross section on $^{12}C$ nuclei in the T2K experiment. This is measured in a restricted region of the final-state phase space for which $p_{\mu,\pi} > 0.2$ GeV, $\cos(\theta_{\mu}) > 0.8$ and $\cos(\theta_{\pi}) > 0.6$, and at a mean (anti)neutrino energy of 0.85 GeV using the T2K near detector. The measured $\nu_{\mu}$ CC coherent pion production flux-averaged cross section on $^{12}C$ is $(2.98 \pm 0.37 (stat.) \pm 0.31 (syst.) \substack{ +0.49 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{ (Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. The new measurement of the $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$-induced cross section on $^{12}{C}$ is $(3.05 \pm 0.71 (stat.) \pm 0.39 (syst.) \substack{ +0.74 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{(Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. The results are compatible with both the NEUT 5.4.0 Berger-Sehgal (2009) and GENIE 2.8.0 Rein-Sehgal (2007) model predictions.

30. Can a binary star host three giant circumbinary planets?

Abstract: We investigate the orbital stability of a tilted circumbinary planetary system with three giant planets. The planets are spaced by a constant number ($\Delta$) of mutual Hill radii in the range $\Delta=3.4-12.0$ such that the period ratio of the inner pair is the same as the outer pair. A tilted circumbinary planetary system can be unstable even if the same system around a coplanar binary is stable. For an equal mass binary, we find that the stability of a three-planet system is qualitatively similar to that of a two-planet system, but the three-planet system is more unstable in mean motion resonance regions. For an unequal mass binary, there is significantly more instability in the three-planet system as the inner planets can undergo von-Zeipel-Kozai-Lidov oscillations. Generally in unstable systems, the inner planets are more likely to be ejected than the outer planets. The most likely unstable outcome for closely spaced systems, with $\Delta \lesssim 8$, is a single remaining stable planet. For more widely separated systems, $\Delta \gtrsim 8$, the most likely unstable outcome is two stable planets, only one being ejected. 31. Tidal truncation of circumplanetary disks fails above a critical disk aspect ratio

Abstract: We use numerical simulations of circumplanetary disks to determine the boundary between disks that are radially truncated by the tidal potential, and those where gas escapes the Hill sphere. We consider a model problem, in which a coplanar circumplanetary disk is resupplied with gas at an injection radius smaller than the Hill radius. We evolve the disk using the PHANTOM Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics code until a steady-state is reached. We find that the most significant dependence of the truncation boundary is on the disk aspect ratio $H/R$. Circumplanetary disks are efficiently truncated for $H/R \lesssim 0.2$. For $H/R \simeq 0.3$, up to about half of the injected mass, depending on the injection radius, flows outwards through the decretion disk and escapes. As expected from analytic arguments, the conditions ($H/R$ and Shakura-Sunyaev $\alpha$) required for tidal truncation are independent of planet mass. A simulation with larger $\alpha=0.1$ shows stronger outflow than one with $\alpha=0.01$, but the dependence on transport efficiency is less important than variations of $H/R$. Our results suggest two distinct classes of circumplanetary disks: tidally truncated thin disks with dust-poor outer regions, and thicker actively decreting disks with enhanced dust-to-gas ratios. Applying our results to the PDS 70c system, we predict a largely truncated circumplanetary disk, but it is possible that enough mass escapes to support an outward flow of dust that could explain the observed disk size., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: This paper presents the design and characterisation of a front-end prototype ASIC for the ATLAS High Granularity Timing Detector, which is planned for the High-Luminosity phase of the LHC. This prototype, called ALTIROC1, consists of a 5$\times$5-pad matrix and contains the analog part of the single-channel readout (preamplifier, discriminator, two TDCs and SRAM). Two preamplifier architectures (transimpedance and voltage) were implemented and tested. The ASIC was characterised both alone and as a module when connected to a 5$\times$5-pad array of LGAD sensors. In calibration measurements, the ASIC operating alone was found to satisfy the technical requirements for the project, with similar performances for both preamplifier types. In particular, the jitter was found to be 15$\pm$1~ps (35$\pm$1~ps) for an injected charge of 10~fC (4~fC). A degradation in performance was observed when the ASIC was connected to the LGAD array. This is attributed to digital couplings at the entrance of the preamplifiers. When the ASIC is connected to the LGAD array, the lowest detectable charge increased from 1.5~fC to 3.4~fC. As a consequence, the jitter increased for an injected charge of 4~fC. Despite this increase, ALTIROC1 still satisfies the maximum jitter specification (below 65~ps) for the HGTD project. This coupling issue also affects the time over threshold measurements and the time-walk correction can only be performed with transimpedance preamplifiers. Beam test measurements with a pion beam at CERN were also undertaken to evaluate the performance of the module. The best time resolution obtained using only ALTIROC TDC data was 46.3$\pm$0.7~ps for a restricted time of arrival range where the coupling issue is minimized. Abstract: Unbiased sky background modeling is crucial for the analysis of deep wide-field images, but it remains a major challenge in low surface brightness astronomy. Traditional image processing algorithms are often designed to produce artificially flat backgrounds, erasing astrophysically meaningful structures. In this paper, we present three ideas that can be combined to produce wide-field astronomical data that preserve accurate representations of the background sky: (1) Use of all-sky infrared/sub-mm data to remove the large-scale time-varying components while leaving the scattered light from Galactic cirrus intact, with the assumptions of (a) the underlying background has little power on small scales, and (b) the Galactic cirrus in the field is optically thin on large scales; (2) Censoring of frames contaminated by anomalously prominent wings in the wide-angle point-spread function; and (3) Incorporation of spatial covariance in image stacking that controls the local background consistency. We demonstrate these methods using example datasets obtained with the Dragonfly Telephoto Array, but these general techniques are prospective to be applied to improve sky models in data obtained from other wide-field imaging surveys, including those from the upcoming Vera Rubin Telescope., Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: Intestinal absorption is an important contributor to systemic cholesterol homeostasis. Niemann-Pick C1 Like 1 (NPC1L1) assists in the initial step of dietary cholesterol uptake, but how cholesterol moves downstream of NPC1L1 is unknown. We show that Aster-B and Aster-C are critical for nonvesicular cholesterol movement in enterocytes. Loss of NPC1L1 diminishes accessible plasma membrane (PM) cholesterol and abolishes Aster recruitment to the intestinal brush border. Enterocytes lacking Asters accumulate PM cholesterol and show endoplasmic reticulum cholesterol depletion. Aster-deficient mice have impaired cholesterol absorption and are protected against diet-induced hypercholesterolemia. Finally, the Aster pathway can be targeted with a small-molecule inhibitor to manipulate cholesterol uptake. These findings identify the Aster pathway as a physiologically important and pharmacologically tractable node in dietary lipid absorption.

43. Mapping the multiphase structure of H I in the Low-Latitude Intermediate-Velocity Arch 1

Abstract: We have analyzed the thermal and turbulent properties of the Low-Latitude Intermediate-Velocity Arch 1 (LLIV1). This was accomplished using archival H I emission and absorption data from two 21,cm line surveys: GHIGLS at $9.^\prime$4 resolution and DHIGLS at $1^\prime$ resolution. The spectral decomposition code $\tt{ROHSA}$ was used to model the column density of different thermal phases and also to analyze an absorption measurement against the radio source 4C~+66.09. From the latter we found spin temperature $T_{\mathrm{s}} \sim 75$K, cold gas mass fraction $f\sim0.5$, and turbulent sonic Mach number $M_t\sim3.4$. Similar to the absorption line modeling against 4C~+66.09, our best emission line decomposition model has no unstable gas across the whole field of view, suggesting that the thermal condensation and phase transition are not on-going but rather have reached an equilibrium state. The cold phase of LLIV1 appears as a collection of elongated filaments that forms a closed structure within the field decomposed. These substructures follow the orientation of the overall large scale cloud, along the diagonal of the GHIGLS field from north-west to south-east (in Galactic coordinates). The angular power spectrum of the cold phase is slightly shallower than that of the warm phase, quantifying that the cold phases have relatively more structure on small scales. Our spatially resolved map of the cold gas mass fraction in LLIV1 from DHIGLS reveals significant variations spanning the possible range of $f$, with mean and standard deviation 0.33 and 0.19, respectively., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures

44. Superorbital periods of Be/X-ray binaries driven by stellar spin precession

Abstract: Superorbital periods are observed in the optical light curves of many Be/X-ray binaries yet their origin has remained somewhat elusive. We suggest that precession of the spin axis of the Be star can drive superorbital periods, particularly for short orbital period binaries. We consider the short orbital period ($P_{\rm orb}=16.6\,\rm day$) and highly eccentric ($e_{\rm b}=0.72$) Be/X-ray binary A0538-66 that has a superorbital period of $421\,\rm day$. First we show that the spin axis precession timescale is about twice the observed superorbital period. Then, with hydrodynamic simulations we show that the Be star decretion disc can remain locked to the equator of the precessing Be star. At each periastron passage of the neutron star, material is accreted into a disc around the neutron star. The neutron star disc nodally precesses on the same timescale as the Be star disc and therefore both discs can contribute to the observed superorbital period. For wider and less eccentric binary systems, the Be star disc can have a larger radial extent and more complex behaviour is expected as a result of disc warping and breaking., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Abstract: Muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance probabilities are identical in the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework, but CPT violation and non-standard interactions can violate this symmetry. In this work we report the measurements of $\sin^{2} \theta_{23}$ and $\Delta m_{32}^2$ independently for neutrinos and antineutrinos. The aforementioned symmetry violation would manifest as an inconsistency in the neutrino and antineutrino oscillation parameters. The analysis discussed here uses a total of 1.97$\times$10$^{21}$ and 1.63$\times$10$^{21}$ protons on target taken with a neutrino and antineutrino beam respectively, and benefits from improved flux and cross-section models, new near detector samples and more than double the data reducing the overall uncertainty of the result. No significant deviation is observed, consistent with the standard neutrino oscillation picture.

Abstract: Observations across the electromagnetic spectrum of radiative processes involving interstellar dust -- emission, extinction, and scattering -- are used to constrain the parameters of dust models and more directly to aid in foreground removal of dust for extragalactic and cosmology observations. The more complementary observations, the better. Here, we quantify the relationship between scattered light and thermal emission from dust in a diffuse (cirrus) intermediate latitude cloud, Spider, using data from the Dragonfly Telephoto Array and the Herschel Space Observatory. A challenge for optical observations of faint cirrus is accurate removal of a contaminating spatially varying sky background. We present a technique to analyse two images of the same cirrus field concurrently, correlating pixel values to capture the relationship and simultaneously fitting the sky background as a complex non-correlating additive component. For the Spider, we measure a $g-r$ color of 0.644$\pm 0.024$ and a visible wavelength to 250 $\mu$m intensity ratio of $10^{-3} \times (0.855 \pm0.025)$ and $10^{-3} \times (1.55\pm0.08)$ for $g$ and $r$-band respectively. We show how to use any dust model that matches the thermal dust emission to predict an upper limit to the amount of scattered light. The actual brightness of the cirrus will be fainter than this limit because of anisotropic scattering by the dust combined with anisotropy of the incident interstellar radiation field (ISRF). Abstract: Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract: This paper reports the first measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions without pions in the final state using multiple detectors with correlated energy spectra at T2K. The data was collected on hydrocarbon targets using the off-axis T2K near detector (ND280) and the on-axis T2K near detector (INGRID) with neutrino energy spectra peaked at 0.6 GeV and 1.1 GeV respectively. The correlated neutrino flux presents an opportunity to reduce the impact of the flux uncertainty and to study the energy dependence of neutrino interactions. The extracted double-differential cross sections are compared to several Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators showing the agreement between both detectors individually and with the correlated result., Comment: Updated discussion in Sec. 49. Exciting spiral arms in protoplanetary discs from flybys

Abstract: Spiral arms are observed in numerous protoplanetary discs. These spiral arms can be excited by companions, either on bound or unbound orbits. We simulate a scenario where an unbound perturber, i.e. a flyby, excites spiral arms during a periastron passage. We run three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of a parabolic flyby encountering a gaseous protoplanetary disc. The perturber mass ranges from $10\, \rm M_J$ to $1\, \rm M_{\odot}$. The perturber excites a two-armed spiral structure, with a more prominent spiral feature for higher mass perturbers. The two arms evolve over time, eventually winding up, consistent with previous works. We focus on analysing the pattern speed and pitch angle of these spirals during the whole process. The initial pattern speed of the two arms are close to the angular velocity of the perturber at periastron, and then it decreases over time. The pitch angle also decreases over time as the spiral winds up. The spirals disappear after several local orbital times. An inclined prograde orbit flyby induces similar disc substructures as a coplanar flyby. A solar-mass flyby event causes increased eccentricity growth in the protoplanetary disc, leading to an eccentric disc structure which dampens over time. The spirals' morphology and the disc eccentricity can be used to search for potential unbound stars or planets around discs where a flyby is suspected. Future disc observations at high resolution and dedicated surveys will help to constrain the frequency of such stellar encounters in nearby star-forming regions., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures, accepted to MNRAS

50. Orbital stability of two circumbinary planets around misaligned eccentric binaries

Abstract: With $n$-body simulations we investigate the stability of tilted circumbinary planetary systems consisting of two nonzero mass planets. The planets are initially in circular orbits that are coplanar to each other, as would be expected if they form in a flat but tilted circumbinary gas disc and decouple from the disc within a time difference that is much less than the disc nodal precession period. We constrain the parameters of stable multiple planet circumbinary systems. Both planet-planet and planet-binary interactions can cause complex planet tilt oscillations which can destabilise the orbits of one or both planets. The system is considerably more unstable than the effects of these individual interactions would suggest, due to the interplay between these two interactions. The stability of the system is sensitive to the binary eccentricity, the orbital tilt and the semi-major axes of the two circumbinary planets. With an inner planet semi-major axis of $5\,a_{\rm b}$, where $a_{\rm b}$ is semi-major axis of the binary, the system is generally stable if the outer planet is located at $\gtrsim 8\,a_{\rm b}$, beyond the 2:1 mean motion resonance with the inner planet. For larger inner planet semi-major axis the system is less stable because the von-Zeipel--Kozai--Lidov mechanism plays a significant role, particularly for low binary-eccentricity cases. For the unstable cases, the most likely outcome is that one planet is ejected and the other remains bound on a highly eccentric orbit. Therefore we suggest that this instability is an efficient mechanism for producing free-floating planets., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures
