1. A Number of Books: The Flexible Function of Limitation Statements.

Abstract

During the twentieth century, a limited edition is usually numbered, in contrast to limited editions of around 1800. This article examines a number of turning points in the history of limitation statements and copy numbering: the disappearance of copyright related numbering versus unnumbered editions of private presses (around 1800), the advent of numbered prints (1850-1900), and numbering of luxury editions and private press editions (1880-1910). The stabilization of a new tradition of numbering occurs around 1930. The development of private press publications is examined in a broad context of copyright and the production of prints, while practices in the English-speaking world are shown to differ from those in other cultures, such as the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany. Abstract

In a century defined by the rise of cities, the early nineteenth-century painter John Martin broke artistic precedents and represented heavenly Paradise as a space premised on urban living. Though he did not entirely reject the more traditional conception of Paradise as a garden, he merged the rural vision of Paradise with urban structures and spaces. Martin's widespread popularity, combined with the contentious discourses regarding the nature of the city, ensured that his representations engaged a set of public debates regarding the nature of urban life in profound ways. Martin's paintings and prints suggested that God not only tolerates cities, but that God builds them and resides in them. In essence, his paintings and prints revealed an urban heaven that helped make a political and religious case for urban life in general. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article considers how a viewer identifies spiritual meaning in landscape images of the Romantic era as well as the role of artists' statements about their work in a viewer's interpretive process. It examines landscapes by Samuel Palmer and John Martin, two early nineteenth-century British artists known for the spiritual content of their work, and the connection between the work and their published statements about it. The article also considers the "secular" landscapes by their contemporary John Sell Cotman for the work's possible spiritual meaning despite the absence of published comments by the artist on the subject. The article focuses on kinesthesia, the perception of movement, and it role in dance spectatorship. It also refers to the dance critic and theorist John Martin's notion of kinesthetic empathy. Martin identified kinesthesia, the perception of movement, as the essential ground of absolute dance. But according to the author it is a complex business, the perception of dance movements is not reducible to a singular sensory modality. The author suggests that dance spectatorship entails complex mode of visual kinesthesis, that is, a way of looking which is intricately interwoven with the sense of approach.

This article presents information on two books "Ruth Page: An Intimate Biography," by John Martin and "Page by Page," by Ruth Page. Unfortunately, neither publication is adventuresome, nor does either achieve the striking, elegant clarity associated with chic. While Page's book is splendidly attractive, its gossipy style is rarely informative. Martin's biography, thoughtfully begun, bogs down in a miasma of trivial data that is anything but revealing. Despite the fairly substantive content, it is a wrenish little book, dowdily produced. The two volumes are curiously unsatisfying. They share a similar problem in spite of wildly different approaches to the subject.
