2. The Good Fight: Action Research as Resistance

Abstract

What options are available for educational action researchers whose research proposals have been denied by an institutional review board (IRB)? This article introduces critical post-intentional phenomenological action research (CP-IPAR) as one remedy for such rejections. In the spirit of accidental ethnography, whereby unexpected, accidental events produce unintended data and findings, the authors, a doctoral candidate and dissertation chair, reflect on insights that emerged from the district-level rejection of Martin's dissertation proposal. Together, the authors explore action research as a tool for resistance to this rejection, recounting how CP-IPAR allowed them to work through the district's prohibition of traditional forms of action research. CP-IPAR's examination of how events change with context dovetails with action research's emphasis on recursive growth and amplifies the dialogue between action research and critical theory. We propose that CP-IPAR is an ideal methodology for conducting action research in restrictive environments, particularly for teacher-researchers whose work must be approved by both university and local school district review boards. This article situates the precipitating incident within scholarship on action research's evolving relationship with institutional review, demonstrates how accidental ethnography created space for us to examine the incident generatively, and illustrates how CP-IPAR deepens our understanding of action research.

Abstract

Emotion suppression is considered a maladaptive form of emotion regulation and is transdiagnostic of numerous mental disorders, including depressive, anxious, and trauma disorders. Existing eye-movement-based interventions, such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, use eye movements to access subconscious content and reduce the intensity of associated affect. This article presents information on the neuroanatomy of the eyes, including that the retinas are entirely made of brain tissue. The article then examines the literature on the eyes and their relationship to the nervous system, emotion regulation, emotion suppression, psychopathology, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning, and it explores interventions that use eye movements and contraindications of their use. 12. The neighbourhood social environment and its role in adolescent alcohol use and drinking motives

Abstract

In Scotland, adolescent alcohol consumption represents a major public health concern. The overarching aim of this research was to identify neighbourhood characteristics associated with adolescent alcohol use behaviours and motivations for drinking with a focus on the neighbourhood social environment. A systematic review identified and synthesised studies that operationalised the neighbourhood social environment from the adolescents' perspective. Using Scottish Health Behaviours in School-aged Children Survey data, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to derive measures of adolescents' perceptions of their local neighbourhood and test for urban/rural invariance. Multilevel models were used to estimate ecometric properties and generate neighbourhood scores. These measures were then used in models to explore associations between various physical and social conditions of the local area with adolescent alcohol use and drinking motivations. Path analysis explored for potential mediating effects of drinking motivations on drinking outcomes. The findings from this thesis indicate that where adolescents live is associated with their alcohol use behaviours and motivations. Neighbourhood social cohesion, urban/rural status and neighbourhood deprivation may give rise to inequalities in alcohol use. Evidence of drinking to cope as a mediator in the relationship between deprivation and weekly alcohol use suggests that drinking as a coping strategy differs by geographic subgroups. Findings support that targeted prevention and intervention strategies are needed to reduce inequalities. Programmes developed to encourage coping skills should be implemented, principally in deprived neighbourhoods and accessible small-towns. Future research is needed to develop and assess strategies to reduce inequalities in adolescent drinking in Scotland.

Abstract

Background Aims Methods Results Discussion Conclusion Eye‐movement protocols are considered empirical, evidence‐based treatments for mental disorders, and there is ample research around their efficacy. However, little research as to why these approaches are effective exists. In this study, an emerging approach, titled Tholáge neuropsychotherapy (called RELEASE at the time of the study), is explained and tested through an exploratory mixed method experiment.A new theory on the efficacy of eye‐movement treatments is also presented, exploring existing research and contending that specific emotions are associated with specific eye movements. If proven, it may be possible to use eye movements to access specific emotions, for therapeutic outcomes.In this experiment, there were 14 participants (n = 14) who experienced Tholáge as a treatment for depression. Two one‐way ANOVAs were conducted and found to be statistically significant and have a large effect size. Qualitative responses were shared from participants, and themes were highlighted.The ANOVAs and qualitative responses demonstrated that Tholáge was effective with emotional regulation, and participants showed improvement on measures of affect and depression (the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule and Beck Depression Inventory).These results show that there is potential for this new eye‐movement treatment in reducing symptoms of depression.These findings can help practitioners in treatment of depression and potentially other diagnoses as well. Abstract

There is a growing recognition of the importance of research into the effects of climate change on mental health and wellbeing. This paper provides an overview of the pathways through which climate change can affect mental health and wellbeing, highlighting the valuable contribution that health geography can make in this field of study. Given expertise in spatial processes, human‐environment interactions, and diverse research methods, health geographers are well‐equipped to enhance our understanding of the connection between climate change and mental health and wellbeing. The paper proposes two key areas of future focus: (1) exploring the reciprocal relationships between mental health and place, and (2) integrating knowledge from health geography and environmental sustainability. Abstract

Breathwork techniques and therapies offer a set of practical interventions for clinical mental health counselors (CMHCs) and are viable methods for integrating physiological sensitivities in treatment by way of the relaxation response. We discuss an organizing framework of breathwork practices and identify three broad categories of breathwork within the field: deep relaxation breathing, mindfulness breathwork, and yogic breathing. Each style is distinct in how it is applied and in the specific respiratory patterns that users are instructed to use. We also aim to elaborate the physiological effects, clinical research outcomes, and applicability of breathwork for treating mental illness. Overall, research findings indicate that breathwork may be efficacious for treating anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Despite preliminary evidence for breathwork's efficacy for treating common psychological distress, more research is needed to evaluate its utility for treating a wider range of mental illness. 30. Neighbourhood influences on youth mental health and stress levels during the first six months of the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on youth mental health and stress levels warrants urgent attention. In Canada, as elsewhere in the world, public health measures in the early stages of the pandemic dramatically transformed the everyday geographies of young people. In the hyper-localisation of everyday life, surrounding neighbourhood features like parks and food-related stores may have provided the only outlets for physical activity, social interaction, and relaxation outside of the home. We examine how health-related behaviours, neighbourhood features, and demographic factors may relate to changes in youth mental health and stress levels during the first six months of the pandemic. A cross-sectional youth-informed online survey was conducted with youth, aged 13–19, in London, Ontario, Canada. Respondents were surveyed about their mental health and stress levels before and during the first six months of the COVID-19 pandemic. From 279 respondents, we identified how age, gender, ethnicity, dietary habits, physical activity levels, and availability of parks, fast food, convenience stores and grocery stores could correlate with mental health and stress levels. Given the role played by public spaces, our work underscores the importance of including youth perspectives in the planning of the public realm which contributes to healthy and thriving communities.

38. The Role of Psychosocial Characteristics in Criminal Convictions among Cocaine and Gambling Clients in Treatment

Abstract

This study assessed the relative importance of problem gambling, cocaine use and selected psychosocial characteristics in predicting criminal convictions. A self-administered questionnaire was completed by clients when admitted to a treatment program for a primary problem with cocaine (n = 300), gambling (n = 199), or tobacco (n = 249). The questionnaire included questions on various psychosocial characteristics and criminal conviction(s) in the past 3 years. Those in treatment for cocaine use or gambling had higher rates of criminal conviction (21.8% and 11.6%, respectively) than those in treatment for tobacco (1.6%). In a multivariate analysis, being in treatment for cocaine or gambling, compared to those in treatment for tobacco, was significantly associated with having had a criminal conviction; while having high levels of social support and being employed full-time were protective factors against criminal conviction. Due to the cross-sectional nature of the study causation cannot be inferred.
