Abstract Platelet rich plasma and ozone therapy have been suggested in the clinical setting as promising and adjuvant therapies for managing the symptoms related to the facial aging. However, there is a lack of evidence about the effects of combining both therapies on rejuvenation. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate and to compare the safety and efficacy of both therapies in facial aging. A single-center prospective pilot study was conducted. Female participants, aged 40 to 60 years, were randomized into 2 groups: participants received the platelet rich plasma treatment (PRP); participants received the therapy with platelet rich plasma associated with ozone therapy (PRPOT). Interventions were performed using the facial intradermal technique in 42 pre-established points, for 4 sessions with an interval of 15 days between them. After analyses performed using photographic records, assessment of frontal, periorbital, nasolabial and marionette wrinkles (Wrinkle Assessment Scale), self-esteem assessment (Brazilian Version of Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale) and assessment of patient satisfaction (FACE-Q) can be suggested that the platelet rich plasma protocol performed in the present study, as well as its association with volume-controlled ozone therapy, proved to be safe and potentially promising modalities in the treatment of facial aging.

The rise in multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria has prompted extensive research into antibacterial compounds, as these resistant strains compromise current treatments. This resistance leads to prolonged hospitalization, increased mortality rates, and higher healthcare costs. To address this challenge, the pharmaceutical industry is increasingly exploring natural products, particularly those of marine origin, as promising candidates for antimicrobial drugs. Marine sponges, in particular, are of interest because of their production of secondary metabolites (SM), which serve as chemical defenses against predators and pathogens. These metabolites exhibit a wide range of therapeutic properties, including antibacterial activity. This systematic review examines recent advancements in identifying new sponge-derived compounds with antimicrobial activity, specifically targeting Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a prevalent Gram-negative pathogen with the highest incidence rates in clinical settings. The selection criteria focused on antimicrobial compounds with reported Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values. The identified SM include alkaloids, sesterterpenoids, nitrogenous diterpene, and bromotyrosine-derived derivatives. The structural features of the active compounds selected in this review may provide a foundational framework for developing new, highly bioactive antimicrobial agents.

Water deficit conditions trigger the production of a chemical signal, the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA), which coordinates multiple responses at different temporal and spatial scales. Despite the complexity of natural drought conditions, the modulation of ABA signaling could be harnessed to ameliorate the drought performances of crops in the face of increasingly challenging climate conditions. Based on recent studies, increasing ABA sensitivity can lead to genotypes with improved drought resistance traits, with sustained biomass production in water-limiting environments and little or no costs with respect to biomass production under optimal conditions. However, variations in ABA production and sensitivity lead to changes in various aspects of reproductive development, including flowering time. Here we provide an updated summary of the literature on ABA-related genes in tomato and discuss how their manipulation can impact water-deficit-related responses and/or other developmental traits. We suggest that a better understanding of specific ABA components’ function or their expression may offer novel tools to specifically engineer drought resistance without affecting developmental traits.

This surveillance study aimed to estimate the proportion of antimicrobial resistant strains and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles of E. coli isolates detected from the intestinal contents of veal and dairy calves in the Veneto Region, Northeaster Italy. Additionally, we investigated the differences in AMR profiles between dairy and veal calves over the period 2017–2022. Overall 1150 E. coli isolates were tested from calves exhibiting enteric disease, with 868 from dairy and 282 from veal calves. The percentage of resistant isolates to nine antimicrobials was notably higher in veal calves compared to dairy calves, except for ampicillin. Throughout the study period, we observed a significant increase in the proportion of resistant isolates to florfenicol, gentamycin, paromomycin, tetracycline and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole in dairy calves, while we did not detect any significant increase in the proportion of resistant isolates among veal calves. A substantial proportion (75.9%) of the isolated E. coli exhibited multi-drug resistance (MDR). The proportion of multi-drug resistant isolates was significantly higher in veal calves (91.7%) compared to dairy calves (74.3%) all through the surveillance period (2017–2022), with no significant variation in MDR proportion among veal calves between 2017 and 2022 but a significant increase among dairy calves.

Disruptions can adversely affect profitability, service level, and even the viability of supply networks (SNs). Natural disasters, the COVID-19 pandemic, and geopolitical tensions heightened disruption risks for SNs. We propose a methodological framework to guide the design of resilient SNs, with a focus on efficient resilience. In fact, despite an increasing economic and social interest in SN resilience and a large variety of qualitative resilience frameworks, there is a lack of model-based frameworks to guide decision makers in the complex task of designing resilient SNs. Differently to the existing literature, that mostly focuses on industry- or disruption-specific approaches, the framework of this paper is general, independent from sectors and causes. It consists of three steps to guide practitioners through model-based stress testing of their SNs: it integrates and organises methods from the literature, from the selection of data to be collected to the validation of the resilient and efficient SN. We illustrate the application of descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics at each phase using real-life case studies data supplemented by literature references. Finally, we present an industrial case study with the step-by-step application of the framework highlighting its strengths and objectives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an aquatic progressive resistance exercise (APRE) and PBM (associated or not) on morphology of skeletal muscle and biochemical markers using an experimental model of knee osteoarthritis (OA). Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly distributed into 5 groups: control group (CG); OA control (OAC); OA submitted to APRE (OAE); OA submitted to PBM (OAL); OA submitted to APRE and PBM (OAEL). Trained rats performed a water-jumping program carrying a load equivalent to 50–80% of their body mass strapped to their chest. Laser irradiation (808 nm) was performed on 2 points of the knee joint. Treatments (3 days a week, for 8 weeks) started 4 weeks after the OA induction. The results showed that all OA groups presented a significantly increase in the muscle cross-section area (CSA) and a decrease in muscle fiber density compared to CG. Moreover, both trained groups presented a reduced expression of atrogin and an intense myoD immunoexpression in the laser exercised animals. The results demonstrate that APRE was effective in reducing muscle atrophy markers and its association with PBM could be effective in modulating molecules involved in muscle recovery in knee OA. The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare, in vitro, the cytotoxicity of different applied ozone dosages in keratinocyte (NOK) and fibroblast (L929) cell lines, as well as the antimicrobial potential for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). NOK and L929 cells and strains of gram-positive bacteria S. aureus and gram-negative bacteria E. coli were divided into seven experimental groups: ozone at doses from 0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05 mg/L. The effect of ozone on cell viability/cytotoxicity was determined using the alamarBlue® assay, the Live/Dead® assay and the morphometric analysis of the percentage of live and dead cells. The results show that applied ozone dosages of 0.005, 0.01 and 0.02 mg/L showed the highest viability values of NOK and L929 cells, as well as a higher density and percentage of live cells in the 72-hour experimental. However, no difference was observed in the percentage of dead cells between the experimental groups. Furthermore, ozone promoted a reduction in CFUs at all tested dosages. With the results obtained in the present study, it is possible to confirm the restorative potential of ozone therapy in a dose-dependent response, as well as its antimicrobial potential. Per la prima volta nel panorama normativo europeo, il GDPR ha introdotto il concetto di “dati genetici” che ha fra i principali campi di impiego quello della ricerca scientifica. Con l’obiettivo di contribuire ad un più ampio dibattito in materia, l’articolo intende affrontare la disciplina prevista dal dettato normativo per il trattamento dei dati genetici a fini di ricerca scientifica. Nello specifico, lo scopo dell’articolo è quello di esaminare ed approfondire l’insieme delle misure tecniche ed organizzative individuate dal legislatore europeo al fine di conciliare il rispetto dei diritti e delle libertà fondamentali degli individui con le necessità di sviluppo della ricerca scientifica e dunque le possibili deroghe ai diritti individuali. In particolare, partendo dalla disciplina introdotta dall’articolo 89 del Regolamento verranno fra l’altro presentate le tecniche di anonimizzazione e quelle di pseudonimizzazione per il trattamento dei dati genetici; il possibile spazio applicativo delle distributed ledger technologies e della blockchain, nonché quella parte di misure tecniche ed organizzative indicate dalle varie linee guida delle autorità nazionali per la protezione dei dati personali, oltre ai principi della privacy by design e by default. Un ultimo approfondimento sarà infine rivolto alle certificazioni e alla necessità di un impiego su scala internazionale di codici di condotta settoriali condivisi tra più Stati per superare le barriere nazionali che ad oggi rappresentano un freno alla ricerca genetica.

The floral transition occurs at the shoot apical meristem (SAM) in response to favourable external and internal signals. Among these signals, variations in daylength (photoperiod) act as robust seasonal cues to activate flowering. In Arabidopsis, long-day photoperiods stimulate production in the leaf vasculature of a systemic florigenic signal that is translocated to the SAM. According to the current model, FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT), the main Arabidopsis florigen, causes transcriptional reprogramming at the SAM, so that lateral primordia eventually acquire floral identity. FT functions as a transcriptional coregulator with the bZIP transcription factor FD, which binds DNA at specific promoters. FD can also interact with TERMINAL FLOWER 1 (TFL1), a protein related to FT that acts as a floral repressor. Thus, the balance between FT-TFL1 at the SAM influences the expression levels of floral genes targeted by FD. Here, we show that the FD-related bZIP transcription factor AREB3, which was previously studied in the context of phytohormone abscisic acid signalling, is expressed at the SAM in a spatio-temporal pattern that strongly overlaps with FD and contributes to FT signalling. Mutant analyses demonstrate that AREB3 relays FT signals redundantly with FD, and the presence of a conserved carboxy-terminal SAP motif is required for downstream signalling. AREB3 shows unique and common patterns of expression with FD, and AREB3 expression levels are negatively regulated by FD thus forming a compensatory feedback loop. Mutations in another bZIP, FDP, further aggravate the late flowering phenotypes of fd areb3 mutants. Therefore, multiple florigen-interacting bZIP transcription factors have redundant functions in flowering at the SAM.

The high-frequency generator is considered a collagen stimulator and skin revitalizer, however there are few studies exploring its effects in the field of rejuvenation and aesthetics. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the impact of high frequency generator therapy on facial aging. A total of 26 participants aged between 50 and 60 years were selected and received high frequency generator treatment for eight weeks. The evaluation was conducted using a combination of photographic records and assessment tools, including Rosenberg scale, perception and satisfaction with treatment evaluation, overall aesthetic improvement scale, and modified Fitzpatrick scale. The analysis conducted by the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale yielded significant results. The Modified Fitzpatrick Wrinkle Scale showed that high frequency therapy led to statistically significant improvements in the appearance of nasolabial wrinkles (right T0: 1.48, T8: 0.87; left T0: 1.51, T8: 1.05) and periorbital wrinkles (right T0: 1.69, T8: 1.05; left T0: 1.71, T8: 1.08). In conclusion, high frequency generator therapy can be a highly effective tool for treating skin aging on the face, however, we recommend that future research includes control groups, and adopts objective measures to expand knowledge about the effects of high frequency. Background Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin characterised by facial erythema, oedema, telangiectasias, papules, pustules and nodules. There is a paucity of effective therapeutic modalities for the management of rosacea. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), a modality in which flash lamps installed in an optical treatment device (head or tip) with mirrors to reflect light, has in recent times gained popularity in the management of this condition. Aim This systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy, safety and adverse effects of IPL treatment for rosacea. Methods This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. The electronic databases searched were Medline, PubMed and Scopus databases. The Risk of bias in non-randomised studies of interventions (ROBINS-I) and risk-of-bias tools for randomised trials (RoB-2) was employed to assess the risk of bias. Results Of a total of 233 articles retrieved from Medline, Scopus and PubMed databases, 14 studies qualified for final analysis. The studies included patients with Fitzpatrick skin types I to IV, with ages ranging from 15 to 78 years. Although the included studies showed heterogeneity between the parameters used, most studies demonstrated positive effects of IPL treatment on telangiectasia and erythema in rosacea and that the adverse effects presented were transitory. Limitation The methodological quality of the included studies was poor. Conclusion Although most studies showed the efficacy of IPL in the treatment of rosacea, the poor quality of the studies was of concern. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
