ABSTRACT: Ruminant livestock are an important source of anthropogenic methane (CH4). Decreasing the emissions of enteric CH4 from ruminant production is strategic to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5°C by 2050. Research in the area of enteric CH4 mitigation has grown exponentially in the last 2 decades, with various strategies for enteric CH4 abatement being investigated: production intensification, dietary manipulation (including supplementation and processing of concentrates and lipids, and management of forage and pastures), rumen manipulation (supplementation of ionophores, 3-nitrooxypropanol, macroalgae, alternative electron acceptors, and phytochemicals), and selection of low-CH4-producing animals. Other enteric CH4 mitigation strategies are at earlier stages of research but rapidly developing. Herein, we discuss and analyze the current status of available enteric CH4 mitigation strategies with an emphasis on opportunities and barriers to their implementation in confined and partial grazing production systems, and in extensive and fully grazing production systems. For each enteric CH4 mitigation strategy, we discuss its effectiveness to decrease total CH4 emissions and emissions on a per animal product basis, safety issues, impacts on the emissions of other greenhouse gases, as well as other economic, regulatory, and societal aspects that are key to implementation. Most research has been conducted with confined animals, and considerably more research is needed to develop, adapt, and evaluate antimethanogenic strategies for grazing systems. In general, few options are currently available for extensive production systems without feed supplementation. Continuous research and development are needed to develop enteric CH4 mitigation strategies that are locally applicable. Information is needed to calculate carbon footprints of interventions on a regional basis to evaluate the impact of mitigation strategies on net greenhouse gas emissions. Economically affordable enteric CH4 mitigation solutions are urgently needed. Successful implementation of safe and effective antimethanogenic strategies will also require delivery mechanisms and adequate technical support for producers, as well as consumer involvement and acceptance. The most appropriate metrics should be used in quantifying the overall climate outcomes associated with mitigation of enteric CH4 emissions. A holistic approach is required, and buy-in is needed at all levels of the supply chain.

The Nationally Determined Contribution Expert Tool (NEXT) is a greenhouse gas accounting tool developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to support annual environmental impact assessment for the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use sector (AFOLU). It provides a 30-year time series of annual and cumulated estimates of carbon removal and greenhouse gas emission reductions from actions determined by Parties in their climate policies. NEXT was developed using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodologies, and estimates can be made using either the IPCC 2006 guidelines or the IPCC 2019 refinement to the IPCC 2006 which are both complemented with the IPCC 2013 Wetlands Supplement. The tool was designed to provide results that directly respond to the provisions of the Enhanced Transparency Framework and support the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) development as required by the modalities, procedures and guidelines. NEXT provides a detailed temporal series of results and a wide set of indicators, including the social value of carbon, enabling a comprehensive environmental and economic overview of climate actions in achieving mitigation targets. The tool helps countries to interpret, track and scale up ambition of their NDCs which could ultimately inform the global stocktake of the Paris Agreement in a harmonized way.

The pasture is an important economic activity in the brazilian Savannah. From the 1970s and 1980s, the implementation of the programs to improve the productivity of pastures, was introduced grasses, especially Brachiaria. When handled properly, the pasture is an efficient method to contribute to carbon sequestration and to the mitigation of concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which are dependent to the time of the land-use and the properties of each soil type. The microregion of Uberlandia in Triangulo Mineiro (MG) is traditionally linked to the pasture. However, the geological and natural soil conditions and climate are factors that can accelerate soil degradation when pasture is not handled properly. The objective of this article was to compare the changes of soil properties and the incorporation of C in covered areas [1] natural brazilian Savannah, [2] mixed system initially converted to agricultural use and the last 15 years of pasture, and [3] pasture cultivated with 30 years of implantation. The results show the influence of the land use on organic matter dynamics, and evaluate the potential degradation of soil by the activity, management and time of land use.

Soil respiration is a major component of the global carbon cycle which links ecosystems and the atmosphere. To evaluate the reaction of soil respiration after wetting, during a dry period, soil respiration and associated environmental factors were measured over a 24-h period, during the dry season in North Cameroon after wetting the soil. Over 24-h, soil respiration rates followed a quadratic curve during the day coming close to linear at night, while soil temperature and moisture together explained at least 73 % of the variations during the 24-h observed. These soil respiration rates increased during the morning, peaked between 11h00 and 13h00 and then decreased gradually to the minimum around 06h00. These observations were used to propose a method for estimating mean daytime and nighttime soil respiration after wetting the soil. The method proposed in this study has the advantage of being based on a small number of measurements and is, therefore, easier to implement for monitoring 24-h soil respiration after the first rains following a long dry period.

Soil is a key compartment for climate regulation as a source of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions and as a sink of carbon. Thus, soil carbon sequestration strategies should be considered alongside reduction strategies for other greenhouse gas emissions. Taking this into account, several international and European policies on climate change are now acknowledging the importance of soils, which means that proper, comparable and reliable information is needed to report on carbon stocks and GHGs emissions from soil. It also implies a need for consensus on the adoption and verification of mitigation options that soil can provide. Where consensus is a key aspect, formal standards and guidelines come into play. This paper describes the existing ISO soil quality standards that can be used in this context, and calls for new ones to be developed through (international) collaboration. Available standards cover the relevant basic soil parameters including carbon and nitrogen content but do not yet consider the dynamics of those elements. Such methods have to be developed together with guidelines consistent with the scale to be investigated and the specific use of the collected data. We argue that this standardization strategy will improve the reliability of the reporting procedures and results of the different climate models that rely on soil quality data.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is usually said to be well correlated with soil texture and soil aggregation. These relations generally suggest a physical and physicochemical protection of SOC within soil aggregates and on soil fine particles, respectively. Because there are few experimental evidences of these relations on tropical soils, we tested the relations of soil variables (SOC and soil aggregate contents, and soil texture) with the amount of SOC physically protected in aggregates on a set of 15 Malagasy soils. The soil texture, the SOC and water stable macroaggregate (MA) contents and the amount of SOC physically protected inside aggregates, calculated as the difference of C mineralized by crushed and intact aggregates, were characterized. The relation between these variables was established. SOC content was significantly correlated with soil texture (clay+fine silt fraction) and with soil MA amount while protected SOC content was not correlated with soil MA amount. This lack of correlation might be attributed to the highest importance of physicochemical protection of SOC which is demonstrated by the positive relation between SOC and clay+fine silt fraction.

A matéria orgânica do solo (MOS) é responsável pela fertilidade, ciclagem de nutrientes e estabilidade da estrutura, possuindo estreita relação com a agregação do solo. No entanto, ainda não é clara a relação entre as classes de agregados na dinâmica de acúmulo ou perda de MOS em função do uso e manejo do solo. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar os teores de carbono (C) em agregados do solo sob quatro usos e manejos: Cerrado nativo (CE), sistema plantio direto (SPD), sistema plantio convencional (SPC) e pastagem (PA). As áreas de estudo estão localizadas no município de Rio Verde (GO), em solo classificado como Latossolo Vermelho distrófico de textura argilosa. Em amostras de solo coletadas em fevereiro de 2007 nas camadas de 0-5, 5-10 e 10-20 cm de profundidade, foram determinados: a quantidade de macroagregados (maiores que 2,0 mm), mesoagregados (maiores que 0,25 e menores que 2,00 mm) e microagregados (maiores que 0,05 e menores que 0,25 mm) estáveis em água, os índices de agregação diâmetro médio ponderado (DMP) e geométrico (DMG) e os teores de C nas classes de agregados estabelecidas. No solo avaliado observou-se predominância de macroagregados, com maior quantidade sob CE e PA, em comparação ao solo sob SPD e SPC, indicando efeito negativo do cultivo do solo na conservação de macroagregados. Contudo, os teores de C nos agregados do solo na camada de 0-20 cm foram maiores no CE e SPD em relação a PA e SPC, sugerindo que o não revolvimento e a manutenção dos resíduos culturais na superfície do solo favorecem o acúmulo de C. Com isso, foi verificado que os macro e mesoagregados podem ser mais sensíveis ao tipo de uso e manejo do solo, quando comparados aos microagregados. A agregação do solo sob PA é semelhante à do CE, embora com menores teores de C, sugerindo dinâmica de agregação diferenciada, o que merece a atenção de novas pesquisas.

The aim of this study was verify alterations in soil biologic attributes under different management systems at Cerrado. Soil samples were taken at dry (july 2006) and wet (february 2007) season at Red distrofic Oxisol (50 – 70 % clay) in Rio Verde, Brazil (17o39’07’’S - 51o06’49’’O) under: native Cerrado (CE), 20 years old pasture (PA), 29 years old conventional tillage (CT), and 10 and 15 years old no-tillage (NT - 10 and NT - 15). Were analysed: soil and microbial carbon and nitrogen levels (C, N, Cmic and Nmic), Cmic:C and Nmic:N ratios, basal respiration (BR) and metabolic quotient (qCO2). Higher soil moisture at wet season led 100 % higher Cmic and Nmic and lower qCO2 level than dry season. Among the management systems, the grass cultivation, animal wastes and area reform were possibly majors factors with which led to higher Cmic e Nmic values in PA, indeed under degradation, than any other one. NT adoption was important to increase Cmic and Nmic, and at least after 10 years pointed out higher values than CT.C and N microbial were more sensitive than total C and N, while other biological parameters also did not show differences.

The growing demand of world food and energy supply increases the threat of global warming due to higher greenhouse gas emissions by agricultural activity. Therefore, it is widely admitted that agriculture must establish a new paradigm in terms of environmental sustainability that incorporate techniques for mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. This article addresses to the scientific demand to estimate in a fast and inexpensive manner current and potential soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in degraded pastures, using remote sensing techniques. Four pastures on sandy soils under Brazilian Cerrado vegetation in São Paulo state were chosen due to their SOC sequestration potential, which was characterized for the soil depth 0-50 cm. Subsequently, a linear regression analysis was performed between SOC and Leaf Area Index (LAI) measured in the field (LAIfield) and derived by satellite (LAIsatellite) as well as SOC and pasture reflectance in six spectra from 450 nm - 2350 nm, using the Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) sensor of satellite Landsat 7. A high correlation between SOC and LAIfield (R² = 0.9804) and LAIsatellite (R² = 0.9812) was verified. The suitability of satellite derived LAI for SOC determination leads to the assumption, that orbital remote sensing is a very promising SOC estimation technique from regional to global scale.

Diferentes sistemas de uso e manejo alteram o teor de carbono no solo (C), porém diminuições no C do solo têm sido reportadas quando áreas de Cerrado nativo são convertidas em pastagem. Disso resulta a necessidade da realização de pesquisas em diferentes sistemas e condições edafoclimáticas, a fim de elucidar as tendências encontradas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a agregação, os teores de C e a abundância natural de δ13C do solo em uma área cultivada há nove anos sob lavoura seguida de 20 anos sob pastagem, a qual atualmente apresenta sinais de degradação (PA), comparando-a a uma vegetação nativa no bioma Cerrado (CE) que ocorre em área adjacente. As áreas de estudo estão localizadas no município de Rio Verde (GO), em solo classificado como Latossolo Vermelho distrófico, de textura argilosa. Em amostras de solo coletadas nas camadas de 0-5, 5-10 e 10-20 cm de profundidade, foram determinados a distribuição de agregados estáveis em água (micro, meso e macroagregados), o diâmetro médio aritmético (DMA) e geométrico (DMG), os teores de C total e de δ13C, o tempo de residência média do C (TRM) e a fração da matéria orgânica leve livre (FLL). Os resultados indicaram que o uso sob lavoura seguido de pastagem reduziu em 21 % o estoque de C original, possivelmente devido ao menor aporte de material na FLL. O solo apresentou elevada agregação e não houve diferenças significativas entre as áreas avaliadas. No entanto, os teores de C nos macroagregados foram menores na PA em relação ao CE, enquanto nos microagregados não houve diferença entre os sistemas de uso, sugerindo, respectivamente, maior e menor sensibilidade ao manejo e menor e maior proteção do C por essas classes de agregados. Os valores de TRM e as análises isotópicas reforçaram esses resultados, mostrando, ainda, substituição de 83 % do C original durante os 29 anos de cultivo. O constante aporte de resíduos vegetais, assim como a manutenção do C no interior dos macro e mesoagregados, são importantes fatores para que ocorra o acúmulo de C nesse tipo de solo.

A conversão de áreas nativas com o corte e queima de vegetação seguida do cultivo do solo resultam em mudanças na dinâmica da matéria orgânica do solo, com alterações nas emissões dos gases causadores de efeito estufa (GEE: CO2, CH4 e N2O) da biosfera para a atmosfera, que causam a elevação da temperatura média e, consequentemente, as mudanças climáticas globais. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar as relações entre os fluxos de CO2, CH4 e N2O com a umidade, biomassa microbiana e as formas inorgânicas de N no solo com diferentes usos das terras no bioma Cerrado (Rio Verde, Goiás). O clima da região é do tipo Aw (Köppen-Geiger), e o solo foi classificado como Latossolo Vermelho distrófico caulinítico textura argilosa com vegetação original de Cerradão. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado (DIC), com quatro tratamentos (áreas): vegetação nativa - Cerradão (CE); pastagem (PA) de braquiária, semeadura convencional (SC) de soja; e semeadura direta (SD) de milho sucedido por milheto. As emissões anuais de CO2 e N2O não mostraram diferenças significativas entre os tratamentos; isso ocorreu devido à elevada variação nos fluxos dos gases em decorrência da sazonalidade no clima, com as menores emissões observadas durante o inverno, devido à ausência da umidade do solo. A média na emissão de CO2 foi de 108,9 ± 85,6 mg m-2 h-1 , e para o N2O, de 13,5 ± 7,6 µg m-2 h-1. Os fluxos de CH4 apresentaram diferenças significativas somente para a pastagem, com emissão de 32 µg m-2 h-1 , enquanto nas demais áreas foram observados influxos entre 46 e 15 µg m-2 h-1 . Com os resultados das correlações, pode-se verificar que a umidade foi a variável do solo que apresentou maior correlação com o fluxo dos três gases de efeito estufa. O teor de N-NO3- e as emissões de CO2 mostraram correlações para todas as áreas. Quando consideradas as correlações para todos os tratamentos conjuntamente, verificou-se que os fluxos dos três gases apresentaram correlações significativas com os teores de C e N-microbiano. Contudo, a relação Cmicro:Nmicro não mostrou correlação significativa com o fluxo dos gases de efeito estufa. A pastagem foi a única situação em que os fluxos de CO2 e N2O apresentaram correlação com as quantidades de N-inorgânico. Os resultados sugerem que os fluxos dos GEE são dependentes do regime pluvial no bioma Cerrado, principalmente nas áreas cultivadas que recebem altas doses de fertilizantes para o aumento da produtividade.

EX-ACT (EX-Ante Carbon-balance Tool) is a tool developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). It provides ex-ante measurements of the mitigation impact of agriculture and forestry development projects, estimating net C balance from GHG emissions and Carbon (C) sequestration. EX-ACT is a land-based accounting system, measuring C stocks, stock changes per unit of land, and CH4 and N2O emissions expressed in t CO2-eq per hectare and year. The main output of the tool is an estimation of the C-balance associated with the adoption of improved land management options, as compared with a "business as usual" scenario. EX-ACT has been developed using primarily the IPCC 2006 Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, complemented by other existing methodologies and reviews of default coefficients. Default values for mitigation options in the agriculture sector are mostly from the 4th Assessment Report of IPCC (2007). Thus, EX-ACT allows for the carbonbalance appraisal of new investment programmes by ensuring an appropriate method available for donors and planning officers, project designers, and decision makers within agriculture and forestry sectors in developing countries. The tool can also help to identify the mitigation impacts of various investment project options, and thus provide an additional criterion for consideration in project selection.EX-ACT (Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool, ferramenta para o balanço ex-ante de Carbono) é desenvolvida pela Organização das Nações Unidas para Agricultura e Alimentação (FAO). Tem como finalidade de fornecer estimativas ex-ante do impacto de atenuação na agricultura e nos projetos de desenvolvimento florestal, estimando o saldo líquido das emissões dos gases do efeito estufa (GEE) e do seqüestro de carbono (C). EX-ACT é um sistema de contabilidade que considera o uso da terra, medindo estoques de C, mudanças do estoque por unidade de área, e emissões de CH4 e N2O expressos em CO2-eq por hectare e por ano. O resultado principal da ferramenta é uma estimativa do balanço de CO2-eq associados à adoção de opções de melhoria do manejo da terra, em comparação com um cenário chamado de "business as usual". EX-ACT foi desenvolvida usando principalmente as recomendações de 1996 para estabelecer os inventários nacionais de GEE (Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories IPCC, 2006) complementada por outras metodologias existentes e coeficientes padrão especificos quando disponíveis. Os valores padrão para as opções de mitigação no setor agrícola são na sua maioria provenientes do 4º Relatório de Avaliação do IPCC (2007). Assim, EX-ACT estima o balanço de C dos novos programas de investimentos, garantindo um método adequado e disponível para financiadores e agentes de planejamento, projetistas, e governantes para os setores da agricultura e da silvicultura nos países em desenvolvimento. A ferramenta também pode ajudar a identificar os impactos de atenuação de opções possíveis em vários projetos de investimento, e assim fornecer um critério adicional para escolhê-las como parte dos projetos.

National inventories of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (implementation of the National Communications) are organized according to five main sectors, namely: Energy, Industrial Processes, Agriculture, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LUCF) and Waste. The objective of this study was to review and calculate the potential of greenhouse gas mitigation strategies in Brazil for the Agricultural and LUCF. The first step consisted in an analysis of Brazilian official and unofficial documents related to climate change and mitigation policies. Secondly, business as usual (BAU) and mitigation scenarios were elaborated for the 2010-2020 timeframe, and calculations of the corresponding associated GHG emissions and removals were performed. Additionally, two complementary approaches were used to point out and quantify the main mitigation options: a) following the IPCC 1996 guidelines and b) based on EX-ACT. Brazilian authorities announced that the country will target a reduction in its GHG between 36.1 and 38.9% from projected 2020 levels. This is a positive stand that should also be adopted by other developing countries. To reach this government goal, agriculture and livestock sectors must contribute with an emission reduction of 133 to 166 Mt CO2-eq. This seems to be reachable when confronted to our mitigation option values, which are in between the range of 178.3 to 445 Mt CO2-eq. Government investments on agriculture are necessary to minimize the efforts from the sectors to reach their targets.Inventários nacionais acerca de emissões de gases do efeito estufa (GEE) (refinamentos das Comunicações Nacionais) são organizadas de acordo com cinco principais setores, a saber: Energia, Processos Industriais, Agropecuária, Mudanças do Uso da Terra e Florestas e Tratamento de Resíduos. O objetivo dessa revisão foi calcular o potencial das estratégias de mitigação de GEE no Brasil para agropecuária e mudança de uso da terra e florestas. A primeira etapa consistiu na análise de documentos oficiais e não-oficiais do Brasil relacionados a mudanças climáticas e políticas de mitigação. O cenário atual, sem adoção de ações mitigadoras (BAU), e os cenários de mitigação foram elaborados para o período 2010-2020. Efetuaram-se os cálculos associados às emissões e remoções de GEE. Adicionalmente, duas estratégias foram utilizadas para destacar e quantificar as principais opções de mitigação: a) seguindo metodologia do IPCC 1996 e b) baseando-se no EX-ACT. Autoridades brasileiras anunciaram que o país buscará reduzir sua taxa de emissão de GEE em 36.1 a 38.9% em relação a 2020. Este é um posicionamento positivo que deve ser adotado por outros países em desenvolvimento. Para alcançar essa meta governamental, os setores agricultura e pecuária devem contribuir reduzindo a emissão em 133 a 166 Mt CO2-eq. Tal redução parece ser atingível quando confrontada com os valores do presente trabalho sobre opções de mitigação os quais estão entre 178,3 e 445 Mt CO2-eq. Investimentos governamentais nos setores agrícola, pecuária e silvicultura são necessários para minimizar os esforços para atingir as metas de redução de emissão pelos outros setores do país.

Agroforestry systems comprise trees and crops, or trees and pastures within the same field. Globally, they cover approximately 1 billion hectares of land and contribute to the livelihoods of over 900 million people. Agroforestry systems have the capacity to sequester large quantities of carbon (C) in both soil and biomass. However, these systems have not yet been fully considered in the approach to C accounting developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, largely due to the high diversity of agroforestry systems and scarcity of relevant data. Our literature review identified a total of 72 scientific, peer-reviewed articles associated with biomass C storage (50) and with soil organic carbon (SOC) (122), containing a total of 542 observations (324 and 218, respectively). Based on a synthesis of the reported observations, we are presenting a set of Tier 1 coefficients for biomass C storage for each of the eight main agroforestry systems identified, including alley cropping, fallows, hedgerows, multistrata, parklands, shaded perennial-crop, silvoarable and silvopastoral systems, disaggregated by climate and region. Using the same agroforestry classification, we are presenting a set of stock change factors ( F _LU ) and SOC accumulation/loss rates for three main land use changes (LUCs): cropland to agroforestry; forest to agroforestry; and grassland to agroforestry. Globally, the mean SOC stock change factors (± confidence intervals) were estimated to be 1.25 ± 0.04, 0.89 ± 0.07, and 1.19 ± 0.10, for the three main LUCs, respectively. However, these average coefficients hide huge disparities across and within different climates, regions, and types of agroforestry systems, highlighting the necessity to adopt the more disaggregated coefficients provided herein. We encourage national governments to synthesize data from local field experiments to generate country-specific factors for more robust estimation of biomass and SOC storage.

Data from the 1990-1994 period presented in the "Brazil's Initial National Communication" document indicated that the country is one of the top world greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters. A large majority of Brazil's GHG emissions come from deforestation mainly of the Amazon biome for agriculture and livestock land uses. This unique inventory is now out of date. Thus, the aims of this review were (i) to update estimates of the GHG emissions for the Brazilian territory, (ii) to estimate the sinks to provide calculations of the GHG net emissions for the 1990-2005 period, (iii) to calculate the actual and estimate shares of agricultural and livestock activities, and (iv) to discuss in light of the new figures and patterns the best mitigation options for Brazil. Total emissions in CO2-eq increased by 17% during the 1994-2005 period. CO2 represented 72.3% of the total, i.e. a small decrease, in favour of non-CO2 GHG, in relation to 1994 when its share was 74.1%. The increase of all GHG excluding Land Use Change and Forestry (LUCF) was 41.3% over the period 1994-2005. Climate Analysis Indicators Tool (CAIT) - World Resources Institute (WRI) estimated a higher increase (48.9%) that classified Brazil at the 69th position. Using our estimates Brazil will fall to the 78th position. But in both cases Brazil increased in clearly lower values than the tendency calculated for China and India, two major emitters, with increases of 88.8% and 62.1%, respectively. Brazil's increase is less than those presented for some countries in Annex 1 that are submitted to a quota of reduction, e.g. Spain with 55.6% of increase and New Zealand with 45.8%. Brazil also is below the average increase shown by non-Annex I countries, estimated to be 61.3%, but above the world average (28.1%). Besides the effort to curb emissions from the energy and deforestation sectors, it is now a top priority to implement a national program to promote mitigation efforts concerning the agricultural and livestock sectors. These mitigation options should not be only focused on emission reductions, but also prone enhancement of the carbon sink. Such a program would be easy to be implemented, because several mitigation strategies have already proven to be efficient, simple to adopt and economically viable.Os resultados referentes ao período de 1990-1994 apresentados na Comunicação Nacional brasileira indicam que o país é um dos maiores emissores de gases do efeito estufa (GEE) do mundo. O documento também estabelece que a maior parte da emissão de GEE advém do desmatamento, principalmente do bioma Amazônia, para dar lugar á agricultura e pecuária. Este único inventário está agora ultrapassado. Os objetivos desta revisão foram: (i) atualizar a estimativa da emissão de GEE para o território brasileiro; (ii) estimar a possível fixação de C que permita calcular a emissão líquida de GEE para o período de 1990-2005; (iii) calcular a contribuição efetiva e compartilhada das atividades agrícolas e pecuárias; e (iv) discutir sob a luz dos novos conhecimentos as melhores opções de mitigação para o Brasil. A emissão total de GEE em equivalente em CO2 aumentou em 17% durante o período de 1994-2005. O CO2 foi responsável por 72,3% do total, ou seja, houve uma pequena diminuição em relação aos outros GEE, uma vez que em 1994 sua participação foi de 74,1%. O aumento de todas as fontes dos GEE, excluída mudança do uso da terra e reflorestamento, foi de 41,3% durante o período de 1994-2005. Climate Analysis Indicators Tool (CAIT) - World Resources Institute (WRI) estimaram um crescimento maior (48,9%), que classifica o Brasil na 69ª posição no ranking mundial de emissores. Utilizando as estimativas deste estudo, o Brasil ocuparia a 78ª posição. Em ambos os casos, porém, o Brasil claramente aumentou suas emissões num ritmo menor do que os que foram calculados para a China e Índia, dois dos maiores emissores, com aumentos de respectivamente 88,8 e 62,1%. O Brasil reduziu suas emissões em taxa maior do que alguns países do Anexo I, sujeitos a uma quota de redução. É o caso da Espanha e a Nova Zelândia que aumentaram em 55,6% e 45,8% suas emissões. O Brasil também está abaixo da média de aumento apresentado pelos países que não são do Anexo I, o qual foi estimado em 61,3%. No entanto, está acima da média global que foi de 28,1%. Além de trabalhar pela redução das emissões dos setores de energia e desmatamento, o Brasil deve agora ter como meta prioritária a implantação de um programa nacional de incentivo ás mitigações nos setores agrícola e pecuário. Tais opções de mitigação não deverão se concentrar somente na redução das emissões, mas também favorecer a fixação de carbono. Tal programa seria de fácil implementação, pois diversas estratégias de mitigação já provaram ser eficientes, fáceis de adotar e economicamente viáveis.

A região do Cerrado representa uma das maiores áreas cultivada do mundo. Os diferentes usos do solo empregados nesta região podem modificar efetivamente as quantidades de matéria orgânica e alterar a ciclagem dos nutrientes no solo. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar oefeito de diferentes sistemas de manejo nas relações entre o carbono total e os atributos químicos de um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico no Cerrado na região de Rio Verde, Estado de Goiás. As áreas estudadas foram cerradão, pastagem de baixa produtividade, plantio convencional de soja e plantio direto de soja com milho em sucessão. Os valores mais baixos no pH, cátions trocáveis, P-disponível e enxofre foram observados no Cerradão, contudo foram encontrados os maiores teores de C-total, que apresentaram correlação elevada com os teores de H+AL e a CTC potencial. Nas demais áreas, foram encontradas concentrações mais elevadas de cátions trocáveis, P-disponível e enxofre. Nas áreas onde não ocorreu o revolvimento do solo e a aplicação do corretivo e dos fertilizantes foi superficial, a estratificação dos teores de C-total promoveu a retenção dos elementos mais próximos à superfície, o que proporcionou correlações significativas com os atributos químicos do solo.The Brazilian savanna region (Cerrado) is one of the largest cultivated areas of the world. The different land uses in the region can effectively change the quantities of soil organic matter and the cycling of nutrients. The objective of this study was to evaluate theeffect of different land use management systems on the relationship between soil organic carbon and the soil chemical attributes of a Red Latosol (Oxisol) under Cerrado in Rio Verde (Goiás state). The treatments studied were native vegetation (cerradão), low-productivity pasture, conventional tillage with soybean, and no-tillage with soybean and maize. The smallest values for pH, available P, K, Ca and Mg were observed for the Cerradão treatment, even if the relatively high C levels increased the potential soil cation exchange capacity. The pasture, conventional tillage and no-tillage treatments showed higher K, Ca, Mg, available P, and S concentrations in the soil. In the areas where soil tillage did not take place and lime and fertilizers were applied superficially, the stratification of the soil organic carbon provides the retention of the elements near to the surface, with significance correlations with the soil chemicals attributes.

The intensive land use invariably has several negative effects on the environment and crop production if conservative practices are not adopted. Reduction in soil organic matter (SOM) quantity means gas emission (mainly CO2, CH4, N2O) to the atmosphere and increased global warming. Soil sustainability is also affected, since remaining SOM quality changes. Alterations can be verified, for example, by soil desegregation and changes in structure. The consequences are erosion, reduction in nutrient availability for the plants and lower water retention capacity. These and other factors reflect negatively on crop productivity and sustainability of the soil-plant-atmosphere system. Conversely, adoption of "best management practices", such as conservation tillage, can partly reverse the process - they are aimed at increasing the input of organic matter to the soil and/or decreasing the rates at which soil organic matter decomposes.O uso intensivo da terra invariavelmente causa efeitos negativos ao ambiente e produção agrícola se práticas conservativas não forem adotadas. Redução na quantidade de matéria orgânica do solo significa emissão de gases (principalmente CO2, CH4, N2O) para a atmosfera e aumento do aquecimento global. A sustentabilidade do solo é também afetada, uma vez que a qualidade da matéria orgânica remanescente muda. Alterações podem ser verificadas, por exemplo, pela desagregação do solo e mudança na sua estrutura. As consequências são erosão, redução na disponibilidade de nutrientes para as plantas e baixa capacidade de retenção de água no solo. Estes e outros fatores refletem negativamente na produtivade das culturas e sustentabilidade do sistema solo-planta-atmosfera. Ao contrário, a adoção de boas práticas de manejo, tal como o sistema plantio direto, pode parcialmente reverter o processo, uma vez que objetiva o aumento das entradas de material orgânico no solo e/ou diminuição das taxas de decomposição da matéria orgânica do solo.

Amostras de terra de áreas desmatadas há 4, 10 e 15 anos e utilizadas como pastagem e uma floresta nativa na região de Paragominas-PA, foram analisadas quanto à constituição isotópica e teor de carbono (C) e nitrogênio (N) com o objetivo de quantificar os estoques de C e N e as alterações devidas a mudanças do uso da terra. O conteúdo de C e N aumentaram ao longo do tempo de uso do solo como pastagem. Após 4 e 15 anos de cultivo o conteúdo de C aumentou 0,28 e 0,86 kg.m-2 na camada superficial 0-30 cm do solo; a pastagem de 10 anos ficou estável (diminuição de 0,02 kg.m-2) em relação à mata natural para a camada 0-30 cm, mas diminuiu de 0,15 na camada 0-10 cm. Na camada superficial 0-30 cm, a matéria orgânica da área sob mata natural é composta por 2,6 kg.m-2 de C estável e 2,1 kg.m-2 de C biodegradável, sendo que após 10 e 15 anos de pastagem o C biodegradável representou 1,3 e 1,0 kg.m-2, correspondendo a 27,7% e 21,3% do C original da floresta e o carbono estável representou 2,6 kg.m-2. Pode-se supor que os processos biológicos do solo ficam quase exclusivamente na dependência do C introduzido pela pastagem, uma vez que metade do estoque do C está na forma estável e que o C biodegradável remanescente da floresta mineraliza rapidamente.

Landscape scale quantification enables farmers to pool resources and expertise. However, the problem remains of how to quantify these gains. This article considers current greenhouse gas (GHG) quantification methods that can be used in a landscape scale analysis in terms of relevance to areas dominated by smallholders in developing countries. In landscape scale carbon accounting frameworks, measurements are an essential element. Sampling strategies need careful design to account for all pools/fluxes and to ensure judicious use of resources. Models can be used to scale-up measurements and fill data gaps. In recent years a number of accessible models and calculators have been developed which can be used at the landscape scale in developing country areas. Some are based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) method and others on dynamic ecosystem models. They have been developed for a range of different purposes and therefore vary in terms of accuracy and usability. Landscape scale assessments of GHGs require a combination of ground sampling, use of data from census, remote sensing (RS) or other sources and modelling. Fitting of all of these aspects together needs to be performed carefully to minimize uncertainties and maximize the use of scarce resources. This is especially true in heterogeneous landscapes dominated by smallholders in developing countries.

This letter is intended to help potential users select the most appropriate calculator for a landscape-scale greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment of activities for agriculture and forestry. Eighteen calculators were assessed. These calculators were designed for different aims and to be used in different geographical areas and they use slightly different accounting methodologies. The classification proposed is based on the main aim of the assessment: raising awareness, reporting, project evaluation or product assessment. When the aims have been clearly formulated, the most suitable calculator can be selected from the comparison tables, taking account of the geographical area and the scope of the calculation as well as the time and skills required for the calculation. The main issues for interpreting GHG assessments are discussed, highlighting the difficulty of comparing the results obtained from different calculators, mainly owing to differences in scope, calculation methods and reporting units. A major problem is the poor accounting for land use change; the calculators are usually able to account satisfactorily for other emission sources. One of the main challenges at landscape-scale level is to produce a realistic assessment of the various production systems as the uncertainty levels are very high. The results should always give some indication of the link between GHG emissions and the productivity of the area, although no single indicator is able to encompass all the services produced by agriculture and forestry (e.g. food, goods, landscape value and revenue).
