4. Invariant Manifolds for Non-differentiable Operators

Abstract

A general invariant manifold theorem is needed to study the topological classes of smooth dynamical systems. These classes are often invariant under renormalization. The classical invariant manifold theorem cannot be applied, because the renormalization operator for smooth systems is not differentiable and sometimes does not have an attractor. Examples are the renormalization operator for general smooth dynamics, such as unimodal dynamics, circle dynamics, Cherry dynamics, Lorenz dynamics, H\'enon dynamics, etc. A general method to construct invariant manifolds of non-differentiable non-linear operators is presented. An application is that the $\mathcal C^{4+\epsilon}$ Fibonacci Cherry maps form a $\mathcal C^1$ codimension one manifold.

Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of $\nu_\mu$ disappearance in a $\nu_\mu$ beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of $2.74 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure $\Delta m^{2}_{32}=(2.52^{+0.20}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$ and $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically-degenerate best fit points at $\sin^2\theta_{23} = $ 0.43 and 0.60. Abstract

We report results from the first search for $\nu_\mu\to\nu_e$ transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to $2.74\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of $0.99\pm0.11$ (syst.) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of $1.07\pm0.14$ (syst.). The $3.3\sigma$ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors $0.1\pi < \delta_{CP} < 0.5\pi$ in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. 9. Anticipatory cues can mitigate car sickness on the road

Abstract

Car passengers experience much more car sickness than car drivers. We assume that this is because drivers can better anticipate the car's motions. Does helping passengers to anticipate the car's motions then mitigate car sickness? Indeed, laboratory studies have shown that anticipatory cues which announce one-dimensional motions of a linear sled mitigate sickness to a small extent. Does this mitigation generalize to real car driving? We tested this in a car ride on a test track along a trajectory involving lane changes, accelerations, and decelerations. We show that vibrotactile cues mitigated car sickness in passengers. Auditory cues were less effective. The mitigating effect of the vibrotactile cue was considerable: a 40% decrease in car sickness symptoms, a larger effect than we found in the laboratory. Automated vehicles can predict their own motion very well. They could thus provide vibrotactile cues to mitigate car sickness in their passengers., QC 20240725

Abstract

We performed quantum manipulations of the multi-level spin system S=5/2 of a Mn$^{2+}$ ion, by means of a two-tone pulse drive. The detuning between the excitation and readout radio frequency pulses allows one to select the number of photons involved in a Rabi oscillation as well as increase the frequency of this nutation. Thus detuning can lead to a resonant multi-photon process. Our analytical model for a two-photon process as well as a numerical generalization fit well the experimental findings, with implications in the use of multi-level spin systems as tunable solid state qubits.

Abstract

We discuss a general framework to address spin decoherence resulting from fluctuations in a spin Hamiltonian. We performed a systematic study on spin decoherence in the compound K$_6$[V$_{15}$As$_6$O$_{42}$(D$_2$O)] $\cdot$ 8D$_2$O, using high-field Electron Spin Resonance (ESR). By analyzing the anisotropy of resonance linewidths as a function of orientation, temperature and field, we find that the spin-orbit term is a major decoherence source. The demonstrated mechanism can alter the lifetime of any spin qubit and we discuss how to mitigate it by sample design and field orientation., Comment: submitted

Abstract

The molecular compound K$_6$[V$^{IV}_{15}$As$^{III}_6$O$_{42}$(H$_2$O)] $\cdot$ 8H$_2$O, in short V$_{15}$, has shown important quantum effects such as coherent spin oscillations. The details of the spin quantum dynamics depend on the exact form of the spin Hamiltonian. In this study, we present a precise analysis of the intramolecular interactions in V$_{15}$. To that purpose, we performed high-field electron spin resonance measurements at 120 GHz and extracted the resonance fields as a function of crystal orientation and temperature. The data are compared against simulations using exact diagonalization to obtain the parameters of the molecular spin Hamiltonian.

Abstract

The period doubling renormalization operator was introduced by M. Feigenbaum and by P. Coullet and C. Tresser in the nineteen-seventieth to study the asymptotic small scale geometry of the attractor of one-dimensional systems which are at the transition from simple to chaotic dynamics. This geometry turns out to not depend on the choice of the map under rather mild smoothness conditions. The existence of a unique renormalization fixed point which is also hyperbolic among generic smooth enough maps plays a crucial role in the corresponding renormalization theory. The uniqueness and hyperbolicity of the renormalization fixed point were first shown in the holomorphic context, by means that generalize to other renormalization operators. It was then proved that in the space of $C^{2+\alpha}$ unimodal maps, for $\alpha$ close to one, the period doubling renormalization fixed point is hyperbolic as well. In this paper we study what happens when one approaches from below the minimal smoothness thresholds for the uniqueness and for the hyperbolicity of the period doubling renormalization generic fixed point. Indeed, our main results states that in the space of $C^2$ unimodal maps the analytic fixed point is not hyperbolic and that the same remains true when adding enough smoothness to get a priori bounds. In this smoother class, called $C^{2+|\cdot|}$ the failure of hyperbolicity is tamer than in $C^2$. Things get much worse with just a bit less of smoothness than $C^2$ as then even the uniqueness is lost and other asymptotic behavior become possible. We show that the period doubling renormalization operator acting on the space of $C^{1+Lip}$ unimodal maps has infinite topological entropy.

Abstract

In this paper geometric properties of infinitely renormalizable real H\'enon-like maps $F$ in $\R^2$ are studied. It is shown that the appropriately defined renormalizations $R^n F$ converge exponentially to the one-dimensional renormalization fixed point. The convergence to one-dimensional systems is at a super-exponential rate controlled by the average Jacobian and a universal function $a(x)$. It is also shown that the attracting Cantor set of such a map has Hausdorff dimension less than 1, but contrary to the one-dimensional intuition, it is not rigid, does not lie on a smooth curve, and generically has unbounded geometry., Comment: 42 pages, 5 pictures

Abstract

This paper proves a theorem about bounding orbits of a time dependent dynamical system. The maps that are involved are examples in convex dynamics, by which we mean the dynamics of piecewise isometries where the pieces are convex. The theorem came to the attention of the authors in connection with the problem of digital halftoning. \textit{Digital halftoning} is a family of printing technologies for getting full color images from only a few different colors deposited at dots all of the same size. The simplest version consist in obtaining grey scale images from only black and white dots. A corollary of the theorem is that for \textit{error diffusion}, one of the methods of digital halftoning, averages of colors of the printed dots converge to averages of the colors taken from the same dots of the actual images. Digital printing is a special case of a much wider class of scheduling problems to which the theorem applies. Abstract

Aim The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS® ) Society guidelines aim to standardise perioperative care in colorectal surgery via 25 principles. We aimed to assess the variation in uptake of these principles across an international network of colorectal units. Method An online survey was circulated amongst European Society of Coloproctology members in 2019/20. For each ERAS® principle, respondents were asked to score how frequently the principle was implemented in their hospital, from 1 ('rarely') to 4 ('always'). Respondents were also asked to recall whether practice had changed since 2017. Subgroup analyses based on hospital characteristics were conducted. Results Of hospitals approached, 58% responded to the survey (195/335), with 296 individual responses (multiple responses were received from some hospitals). The majority were European (163/195 [83.6%]). Overall, respondents indicated they 'most often' or 'always' adhered to most individual ERAS® principles (18/25 [72%]). Variability in uptake of principles was reported, with universal uptake of some principles (e.g., prophylactic antibiotics; early mobilisation) and inconsistency from 'rarely' to 'always' in others (e.g., no nasogastric intubation; no preoperative fasting and carbohydrate drinks). In alignment with 2018 ERAS® guideline updates, adherence to principles for prehabilitation, managing anaemia, and postoperative nutrition appears to have increased since 2017. Conclusions Uptake of ERAS® principles varied across hospitals, and not all 25 principles were equally adhered to. Whilst some principles exhibited a high level of acceptance, others had a wide variability in uptake indicative of controversy or barriers to uptake. Further research into specific principles is required to improve ERAS® implementation.

We present results from MiniMax (Fermilab T-864), a small test/experiment at the Tevatron designed to search for the production of disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) in $p - \bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.8$ TeV in the forward direction, $\sim 3.4 < \eta < \sim 4.2$. Data, consisting of $1.3 \times 10^6$ events, are analyzed using the robust observables developed in an earlier paper. The results are consistent with generic, binomial-distribution partition of pions into charged and neutral species. Abstract

We report on the progress of a search for disoriented chiral condensates (DCCs) in the far forward region at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV. MiniMax is a small collider experiment situated at the C0 interaction region of the Tevatron and has been designed to measure the ratio of charged to neutral pions produced at eta near 4.1. The distribution of this ratio is expected to be very different for the generic binomial and DCC particle production models. We present a method used for the search using the factorial moments of particle generating functions, which can be extracted directly from the data. Abstract

RIVM rapport:Het RIVM en het Trimbos-instituut hebben voor het eerst een overzicht gemaakt van cijfers die bekend zijn over de mentale gezondheid in Nederland. De cijfers worden zonder toelichting of conclusies gegeven. Er wordt nog onderzoek gedaan naar factoren die samenhangen met mentale gezondheid en wat dat betekent voor beleid. De resultaten daarvan worden in 2025 bekend. De cijfers zijn onderverdeeld in drie thema’s: het mentale welbevinden, mentale problemen en psychische aandoeningen. De informatie gaat over de Nederlandse bevolking in zijn geheel en over verschillende (leeftijds)groepen, studenten en werkenden. Het overzicht laat zien welke cijfers beschikbaar zijn voor achttien graadmeters (indicatoren) waarmee de drie thema’s over mentale gezondheid in beeld wordt gebracht. Voorbeelden zijn hoe veerkrachtig mensen zich voelen, of ze eenzaam zijn, het aantal mensen met burn-outklachten en een angststoornis. Tegelijkertijd maakt het overzicht duidelijk welke informatie ontbreekt. Dit is het eerste onderdeel van de Monitor mentale gezondheid en is gemaakt in opdracht van het ministerie van VWS(Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport ). Dit ministerie gaat de informatie gebruiken voor de landelijke aanpak 'Mentale gezondheid: van ons allemaal’ om de mentale gezondheid in Nederland te verbeteren. De monitor loopt tot 2025 en laat zien hoe de mentale gezondheid van de Nederlandse bevolking zich ontwikkelt. In 2024 worden de actuele cijfers over de indicatoren voor heel Nederland online gepubliceerd. Deze informatie wordt ingedeeld naar leeftijd, geslacht, en sociaaleconomische positie. Als dat kan, worden de cijfers per regio of gemeente gegeven., For the first time, RIVM and the Trimbos Institute have compiled a numerical report with known figures about the mental health of the Dutch population. The figures are presented without comment or conclusions. Figures describing causes and consequences of mental health and their implications for policy are due in 2025. The figures have been divided into three themes: mental well-being, mental health issues and psychiatric conditions. The information is segmented for the Dutch population as a whole and for various subgroups (including age groups), students and the working population. The report shows which figures are available for 18 criteria (indicators) related to the three mental health themes. Examples of these indicators are how resilient people feel, whether they are lonely, how many people have burnout symptoms and how many people have an anxiety disorder. At the same time, the report makes clear which information is missing. This is the first component of the Mental Health Monitor, commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. The Ministry will use this information as input for the national strategy to improve mental health in the Netherlands, titled ‘Mental health: for us all’. The Monitor will run into 2025 and show trends in the mental health of the Dutch population. In 2024, up-to-date figures about the indicators for the Dutch population as a whole will be published online, segmented by age, gender and socio-economic position. If feasible, the figures will also be segmented per region or municipality.

Abstract

Inleiding: Al jaren zijn er in Nederland verschillende initiatieven in de ambulante gehandicaptenzorg met beeldzorg. Echter, van brede implementatie is, ook na de Covid-19 pandemie, nog geen sprake. Mogelijk is er een andere manier van organiseren en implementeren nodig. Het doel van dit onderzoek was de randvoorwaarden in kaart te brengen voor kwalitatief goede beeldzorg voor mensen met een verstandelijke beperking, met behulp van de group concept mapping (GCM) methode. Onder beeldzorg wordt verstaan: zorg en ondersteuning op afstand tussen zorgverlener/begeleider en cliënt. Methode Een diverse groep deelnemers deed mee aan de GCM procedure, die bestond uit het benoemen van randvoorwaarden in een online brainstorm, deze sorteren en waarderen en het interpreteren van de (door een onderzoekers geanalyseerde) resultaten. Resultaten De concept map bestaat uit 99 opvattingen in 13 clusters. Genoemde randvoorwaarden gaan over de technologie én over beleid, intern in de organisatie en over wat er nodig is in relatie tot zorggebruikers, zijn/haar naasten, en andere organisaties. Conclusie De concept map laat zien dat voor een duurzame implementatie van beeldzorg de verschillende randvoorwaarden gecombineerd moeten worden in zowel visie, beleid als uitvoering. Het gaat dan om onder andere applicaties, ICT-infrastructuur en ICT-ondersteuning, om training en scholing van zorgprofessionals, om de aansluiting van beeldzorg bij de behoeften, vragen en capaciteiten van cliënten met een verstandelijke beperking. Betrokkenheid van cliënten en zorgprofessionals daarbij is noodzakelijk.

RIVM rapport:Voor het ministerie van VWS(Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport ) is een advies gemaakt om de mentale gezondheid van de Nederlandse bevolking door de jaren heen te volgen. Naast de hele bevolking is er aandacht voor specifieke groepen: kinderen, adolescenten, jongvolwassenen, volwassenen, ouderen, studenten, werkenden en mensen in een lage sociaaleconomische positie. Ook gaat deze monitor over oorzaken van mentale gezondheid en de gevolgen ervan. Aanleiding voor de monitor is de landelijke aanpak ‘Mentale gezondheid: van ons allemaal’ van het ministerie van VWS om de mentale gezondheid te verbeteren. VWS wil de informatie die de monitor oplevert gebruiken om te zien hoe mentale gezondheid zich ontwikkelt. Het advies is geschreven door het RIVM, Trimbos-instituut, GGD(Gemeentelijke Gezondheidsdienst) GHOR(Geneeskundige Hulpverleningsorganisatie in de Regio) Nederland, met medewerking van het Nederlands Jeugdinstituut. De onderzoekers stellen 18 ‘indicatoren’ voor waarmee ontwikkelingen in de mentale gezondheid van de algemene bevolking en de specifieke groepen in de tijd zijn te volgen. Indicatoren gaan bijvoorbeeld over psychische klachten, veerkracht en levenstevredenheid. Over de mentale gezondheid van kinderen blijkt weinig of geen informatie beschikbaar. Oorzaken van mentale gezondheid die een plek in de monitor krijgen zijn onder andere bestaanszekerheid, kwaliteit van leven en sociale leefomgeving. Voorbeelden van gevolgen van mentale ongezondheid zijn wachttijden voor specialistische GGZ(geestelijke gezondheidszorg) en ziekteverzuim door psychische klachten. Voor de monitor worden gegevens gebruikt uit bestaande bronnen die over meerdere jaren informatie hebben en de komende tijd nog blijven bestaan. Hierdoor is er al informatie beschikbaar over de jaren vóór de start van de monitor. De monitor wordt zo opgezet dat hiermee ook in de toekomst de mentale gezondheid van de Nederlandse bevolking kan worden gevolgd. Dat is ook nodig omdat verbeteringe, A recommendation has been made for the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport to monitor the mental health of the Dutch population through the years. In addition to the general population, there is a focus on specific groups: children, adolescents, young adults, adults, the elderly, students, workers and people in a low socio-economic position. This monitor also covers the causes and effects of mental health. The monitor was prompted by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport’s national strategy to improve mental health, titled ‘Mental health: for us all’. The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport would like to use the information provided by the monitor to see how mental health is evolving. The recommendation was written by RIVM, the Trimbos Institute, and GGD GHOR Nederland, in collaboration with the Netherlands Youth Institute. The researchers propose 18 ‘indicators’ that can be used to monitor developments in the mental health of the general population and the specific groups over time. These indicators relate to topics like mental health problems, resilience and life satisfaction. Little to no information is available about the mental health of children. Causes of mental health that will be part of the monitor include income security, quality of life and social environment. Examples of consequences of poor mental health include waiting time for specialist mental healthcare services and absenteeism due to mental health issues. The monitor will use data from existing sources that have several years of information and will continue to exist in the time ahead. As a result, information is already available about the years prior to the start of the monitor. The monitor will be designed in such a way that the mental health of the Dutch population can be monitored in the future as well. This is also necessary because improvements in mental health are not expected within just a few years.

41. Poor association between tendon structure and self-reported symptoms following conservative management in active soldiers with mid-portion Achilles tendinopathy

Abstract

IntroductionMid-portion Achilles tendinopathy (mid-AT) is currently the preferred term for persistent Achilles tendon pain, defined as located 2–7 cm proximal to the calcaneus, and with loss of function related to mechanical loading. Histologically, mid-AT is considered to represent a degenerative condition. Therefore, monitoring of tendon structure additional to pain and function may be warranted, to prevent progression of degeneration or even tendon rupture. The aim of this study was to determine the association between pain and function, relative to the Achilles tendon structure, in soldiers treated with a conservative programme for mid-AT.MethodsA total of 40 soldiers (40 unilateral symptomatic tendons) were included in this study. Pain and function were evaluated with the Victorian Institute of Sports Assessment -Achilles (VISA-A) questionnaire. Tendon structure was quantified using ultrasound tissue characterisation (UTC). We quantified both the Achilles tendon mid-portion (2–7 cm) and the area of maximum degeneration (AoMD) within the tendon mid-portion. VISA-A and UTC measurements were taken at baseline and after 26 weeks of follow-up. Spearman’s rho was used to determine the correlation between VISA-A and UTC. Correlations were calculated for baseline, follow-up and change score values.ResultsNegligible correlations were found for all analyses, ranging from −0.173 to 0.166 between mid-portion tendon structure and VISA-A, and from −0.137 to 0.150 between AoMD and VISA-A. While VISA-A scores improved, on average, from 59.4 points at baseline to 93.5 points at follow-up, no detectable improvement in aligned fibrillar structure was observed in our population.ConclusionPain and function are poorly associated with Achilles tendon structure in soldiers treated with a conservative programme for mid-AT. Therefore, we advise clinicians to use great caution in communicating relationships between both clinical entities.Trial registration numberNL69527.028.19.

Abstract

Aim: The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS®) Society guidelines aim to standardize perioperative care in colorectal surgery via 25 principles. We aimed to assess the variation in uptake of these principles across an international network of colorectal units. Method: An online survey was circulated amongst European Society of Coloproctology members in 2019–2020. For each ERAS principle, respondents were asked to score how frequently the principle was implemented in their hospital, from 1 (‘rarely’) to 4 (‘always’). Respondents were also asked to recall whether practice had changed since 2017. Subgroup analyses based on hospital characteristics were conducted. Results: Of hospitals approached, 58% responded to the survey (195/335), with 296 individual responses (multiple responses were received from some hospitals). The majority were European (163/195, 83.6%). Overall, respondents indicated they ‘most often’ or ‘always’ adhered to most individual ERAS principles (18/25, 72%). Variability in the uptake of principles was reported, with universal uptake of some principles (e.g., prophylactic antibiotics; early mobilization) and inconsistency from ‘rarely’ to ‘always’ in others (e.g., no nasogastric intubation; no preoperative fasting and carbohydrate drinks). In alignment with 2018 ERAS guideline updates, adherence to principles for prehabilitation, managing anaemia and postoperative nutrition appears to have increased since 2017. Conclusions: Uptake of ERAS principles varied across hospitals, and not all 25 principles were equally adhered to. Whilst some principles exhibited a high level of acceptance, others had a wide variability in uptake indicative of controversy or barriers to uptake. Further research into specific principles is required to improve ERAS implementation.
