Laser plasma acceleration at kilohertz repetition rate has recently been shown to work in two different regimes, with pulse lengths of either 30 fs or 3.5 fs. We now report on a systematic study in which a large range of pulse durations and plasma densities were investigated through continuous tuning of the laser spectral bandwidth. Indeed, two LPA processes can be distinguished, where beams of the highest quality, with 5.4 pC charge and a spectrum peaked at 2-2.5 MeV are obtained with short pulses propagating in moderate plasma densities. Through Particle-in-Cell simulations the two different acceleration processes are thoroughly explained. Finally, we proceed to show the results of a 5-hour continuous and stable run of our LPA accelerator accumulating more than $\mathrm{18\times10^6}$ consecutive shots, with 2.6 pC charge and peaked 2.5 MeV spectrum. A parametric study of the influence of the laser driver energy through PIC simulations underlines that this unprecedented stability was obtained thanks to micro-scale density gradient injection. Together, these results represent an important step towards stable laser-plasma accelerated electron beams at kilohertz repetition rate.

We report evidence for the first generation of XUV spectra from relativistic surface high-harmonic generation (SHHG) on plasma mirrors at a kilohertz repetition rate, emitted simultaneously with energetic electrons. SHHG spectra and electron angular distributions are measured as a function of the experimentally controlled plasma density gradient scale length $L_\mathrm{g}$ for three increasingly short and intense driving pulses: 24~fs and $a_0=1.1$, 8~fs and $a_0=1.6$, and finally 4~fs and $a_0\approx2.1$, where $a_0$ is the peak vector potential normalized by $m_\mathrm{e} c/e$ with the elementary charge $e$, the electron rest mass $m_\mathrm{e}$, and the vacuum light velocity $c$. For all driver pulses, we observe correlated relativistic SHHG and electron emission in the range $L_\mathrm{g}\in[\lambda/25,\lambda/5]$, with an optimum gradient scale length of $L_\mathrm{g}\approx\lambda/10$.

We measure the emission of energetic electrons from the interaction between ultrashort laser pulses and a solid density plasma in the relativistic regime. We detect an electron beam that only appears with few-cycle pulses (< 10 fs) and large plasma scale lengths ($L > \lambda_0$). Numerical simulations, in agreement with the experiments, reveal that these electrons are accelerated by a laser wakefield. Plasma waves are indeed resonantly excited by the few-cycle laser pulses in the near-critical-density region of the plasma. Electrons are then injected by ionization into the plasma waves and accelerated to relativistic energies. This study provides an unprecedented insight into the physics happening in the few-cycle regime.

Laser-plasma acceleration is an emerging technique for accelerating electrons to high energies over very short distances. The accelerated electron bunches have femtosecond duration, making them particularly relevant for applications such as ultrafast imaging or femtosecond X-ray generation. Current laser-plasma accelerators are typically driven by Joule-class laser systems that have two main drawbacks: their relatively large scale and their low repetition-rate, with a few shots per second at best. The accelerated electron beams have energies ranging from 100 MeV to multi-GeV, however a MeV electron source would be more suited to many societal and scientific applications. Here, we demonstrate a compact and reliable laser-plasma accelerator producing high-quality few-MeV electron beams at kilohertz repetition rate. This breakthrough was made possible by using near-single-cycle light pulses, which lowered the required laser energy for driving the accelerator by three orders of magnitude, thus enabling high repetition-rate operation and dramatic downsizing of the laser system. The measured electron bunches are collimated, with an energy distribution that peaks at 5 MeV and contains up to 1 pC of charge. Numerical simulations reproduce all experimental features and indicate that the electron bunches are only $\sim 1$ fs long. We anticipate that the advent of these kHz femtosecond relativistic electron sources will pave the way to wide-impact applications, such as ultrafast electron diffraction in materials with an unprecedented sub-10 fs resolution.

A high repetition rate electron source was generated by tightly focusing kHz, few-mJ laser pulses into an underdense plasma. This high intensity laser-plasma interaction led to stable electron beams over several hours but with strikingly complex transverse distributions even for good quality laser focal spots. Analysis of the experimental data, along with results of PIC simulations demonstrate the role of the laser wavefront on the acceleration of electrons. Distortions of the laser wavefront cause spatial inhomogeneities in the out-of-focus laser distribution and consequently, the laser pulse drives an inhomogenous transverse wakefield whose focusing/defocusing properties affect the electron distribution. These findings explain the experimental results and suggest the possibility of controlling the electron spatial distribution in laser-plasma accelerators by tailoring the laser wavefront.

We examine how the generation and propagation of high-order harmonics in a partly ionized gas medium affect their strength and synchronization. The temporal properties of the resulting attosecond pulses generated in long gas targets can be significantly influenced by macroscopic effects, in particular by the intensity in the medium and the degree of ionization. Under some conditions, the use of gas targets longer than the absorption length can lead to the generation of self-compressed attosecond pulses. In this report, the effectiveness of prototypes of interactive learning environments (ILEs) is compared with printed learning environments or traditional face-to-face lectures. The learning content for all conditions was a course on inferential statistics for first-year college students. In the learning materials, a clear distinction was made between the basic content and embedded support devices (ESDs) that are expected to support learning. The prototypes differed in the extent to which they supported interactivity in manipulating the ESD and the degree of discernability of the ESD. In a large empirical study involving 502 Belgian college students, ILEs were compared with learning environments based on printed materials and traditional lectures. Results indicate that there are no differences in learning outcomes when the conditions are compared. They also show the role of ESDs and the significant aspects of individual differences among students on study outcome. Three tables summarize study findings. (Contains 36 references.) (Author/SLD)

The use of embedded support devices (ESDs) has been studied in previous research that has unfortunately demanded introspection and reflection on one's own cognitive functioning. In contrast, eye movement registration measures the attentional focus of students on specific text parts regardless of whether or not the student is conscious of this focus. Earlier research has indicated that ESDs are used at a deep level, and not superficially read. Eleven college students read slides from a chapter of a governmental law course from the Open University of the Netherlands. Eye movements were monitored through the corneal reflection/pupil center technique and computer analysis. Eye movement patterns were compared for text with ESDs and text without ESDs. The average reading time per word was in line with expectations for most ESDs. Every ESD was looked at least once by each student. Limitations and possibilities for improvement of the research technique are discussed. Five figures and six tables illustrate study findings. (Contains 67 references.) (SLD)

The relationship between embedded support devices (ESDs) and study results was examined to determine whether ESDs have a positive effect on study outcome. Two versions of a learning unit of a governmental law course at the Open University of the Netherlands were constructed. One represented the original text and the other was about 40% shorter as a result of deleting most support devices (schemes, summaries, and learning objectives). Thirty-six students from the University of Maastricht studied one of the course versions. Tests and questionnaires were developed to measure effects of the two versions and the potential interrelation with independent variables. No effect of studying different course versions was found on study time, student evaluations of the learning access level, and "knowledge" questions. But students who studied the course version with ESDs had significantly higher scores on insight questions. Of the independent variables (e.g., prior knowledge, time used, reading comprehension, educational level, and gender) only reading comprehension had a significant effect. An attempt is made to elaborate a theoretical base about the functions and effects of embedded support devices (ESDs), considering the extent to which students actually use ESDs. ESDs are a set of activating, structuring, and motivating extras in study materials that are designed to support the individual study process. The report describes the set of ESDs that helps define the didactical elaboration of distance education courses at the Open University of the Netherlands (OU). Earlier research related to ESDs is reviewed, and a theoretical base is proposed. This base, which draws on a cognitive psychological framework, is then used to define the functions and the effects of ESDs, with a further description of methods used to research effects of ESDs. The framework takes into account the role of the reading process, motivation, individual differences, and the task environment. Seven figures and four tables illustrate the discussion. The Solid State Additive Manufacturing (AM) process referred as MELD that fabricated the samples in this study, provides a new path for repairing, coating, joining and additive manufacturing metals and metal matrix composites. This research will be the first application of a physics-based microstructure dependent internal state variable (ISV) plasticity and damage material model to capture the mechanical response of an AM Aluminum Alloy (AA) 2219 via the MELD process. In this research, a microstructure-based internal state variable (ISV) plasticity-damage model was used to capture the mechanical behavior of AFS 2219 aluminum alloy. Aeroprobe Corporation, creator and patent holder for the MELD process, fabricated the material by pushing a solid filler rod of AA2219-T861 material through a hollow rotating tool onto an AA2219 T851 plate substrate. As feedstock, solid or powder precursor metals are pushed through a nonconsumable rotating cylindrical tool. Herein, added layers are deposited and metallurgically bonded to substrate material or previously deposited layers by the heat generated from the rotating tool through plastic deformation of the filler material. Once a layer has been added, the tool height increases, and starts the deposition of the next layer. This process results in beneficial properties such as grain refinement, homogenization and reduced porosity (fully dense). This process will experience temperatures similar to those in the weld nugget zone (WNZ) in friction stir welding (FSW), ranging from 0.6-0.9 Tm, with Tm being the melting point of the material. MELD is highly scalable with AA deposition rates reaching over 1000 cm3/hr, which allows for MELD being used for repairs, coatings, and building components. A motivating factor driving the research for physics-based history dependent material modeling of MELD components is the ability to accurately capture the stress-state and strain rate dependence in the material caused by variations in material microstructure from the MELD processing of new or repaired components. The ISV model incorporates microstructural content and is consistent with continuum level kinematics, kinetics, and thermodynamics. These features allow the ISV model to capture large deformations at the structural scale using the kinematic and isotropic hardening, while microscale damage is obtained from the microstructural features. The benefits of the ISV model arise from the inclusion of structure-property relationships identified from microstructural characterization and experimentation. The Bauschinger effect (BE) is an important concept, vital in the accurate prediction of cyclic stress-strain response of ductile materials such as metals. The ISV model has been successfully used to capture the behavior and damage, and the BE of different aluminum alloys and steels. The ISV model uses kinematic and isotropic hardening to help capture deformations of the material at the macro scale. To understand this hardening relationship, calculating the kinematic and isotropic hardening relationship in the material is warranted for a high-fidelity model. Electron Backscattered Diffraction (EBSD) was used to characterize the as-fabricated microstructure, where a fully-dense equiaxed grain morphology with average grain size of 2.5 μm was observed. Microhardness mapping of the as-built structures, monotonic tension and compression experiments at both quasi-static (0.001/s) strain rates, tension-followed-by-compression and compression-followed-by-tension experiments were performed to obtain the set of plasticity and damage constants necessary to capture strain rate and stress state behavior of this additive material. To calibrate the plasticity-damage model, a single set of constants were determined to capture the different stress states the MELD AA2219. One set of the constants was determined from experimental true stress-strain curves for the tension and compression data. Additionally, microstructural information and data from the open literature were used as the other model constants. This research is a first of its kind for AFS AA2219, includes correlating the ISV model to the monotonic experimental results that capture the isotropic and kinematic plasticity mechanical response.
