The industry is the main source of pollutant emissions and is responsible for 63% of Pb emissions and 58% of Cd emissions. One of the oldest and most polluted places related to the mining and processing of non-ferrous metals in Europe is the Silesia-Cracow region (southern Poland). Currently, this region is also the only one where zinc and lead smelting plant are active (HCM) in this part of Europe. Processing of zinc-lead ores and recycled waste materials generates trace elements emission to the environment. Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) used at the HCM zinc smelter generates eg. trace elements, forms of sulfur oxide, and alkali dust. Despite the introduction of protection programs and the implementation of installations preventing the release of pollutants into the environment developed in the last decade by the plant, still, the area surrounding the smelter is characterized by elevated contamination of trace elements.The work aimed to capture the impact of an industrial plant (HCM zinc and lead smelter) on forest ecosystems, based on physicochemical analyzes of short-term snow cover. The research area was located in the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L) stands adjacent to the zinc and lead smelter. The sampling points were selected in directions: N, S, W, and E from the middle point (emitter of HCM) with a 1-kilometer distance interval. There were selected 22 points with distances in values 0-8 km from the middle point. The samples were collected in February 2021. The snow samples were analyzed for pH, EC, SO42-, Cd, Pb, and Zn concentration. Cd ranged from 0.001 to 2.47 mg L-1, Zn from 12.10 to 0.05 mg L-1, Pb from 2.47 to 0.001 mg L-1, and SO42- ranged from 1.08 to 19.38 mg L-1 in the snow. The Cd was concentrated next to the emitter (up to 1 km), similarly to Zn and SO42-, but still high values of Zn and SO42- reached further – up to about 2-3 km from the emitter. The highest Pb pollution was also found near the emitter, but the pollution spread along with the direction of the winds. Pb pollution did not decrease with distance - higher values were found at spots, e.g., about 2 (0.19 mg L-1) and 4 km (0.13 mg L-1) away from the emitter on the east. The pH varies from 5.4 to 7.0, and the highest pH occurred just near the emitterand decreased with the direction of the wind.High values of researched pollution in the snow and their distribution indicated the impact of the emitter on the nearest environment, however, these amounts are not harmful to plants, except for point 0 (closest to the emitter). Unorganized emissions (i.e. emissions resulting from technological processes) caused much greater pollution visible at the point closest to the emitter. Organized emission pollution, released through stationary point-sources, i.e.chimneys, discharge air vents, etc., was significantly lower.

The paper investigates the usage of LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data for the automation of mapping vegetation with respect to the evaluation of the ecological succession process. The study was performed for the repository of the “Fryderyk” mine (southern Poland). The post-flotation area analyzed is a unique refuge habitat—Natura2000, PLH240008—where a forest succession has occurred for several dozen years. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) point clouds were used for deriving detailed information about the morphometry of the spoil heap and about the secondary forest succession process—mainly vegetation parameters i.e., height and canopy cover. The area of the spoil heap is irregular with a flat top and steep slopes above 20°. Analyses of ALS point clouds (2011 and 2019), confirmed progression in the forest succession process, and land cover changes especially in wooded or bushed areas. Precise vegetation parameters (3D LiDAR metrics) were calculated and provided the following parameters: mean value of vegetation height as 6.84 m (2011) and 8.41 m (2019), and canopy cover as 30.0% (2011) and 42.0% (2019). Changes in vegetation volume (3D area) were shown: 2011—310,558 m3, 2019—325,266 m3, vegetation removal—85,136 m3, increasing ecological succession—99,880 m3.

The paper investigates using PlanetScope satellite images together with LiDAR data for automation of land use/cover (LULC) mapping and 3D vegetation characteristics in the aspect of mapping and monitoring of the secondary forest succession areas. The study was performed for the tested area in the Biskupice district (South of Poland), where a forest succession occurs on post-agricultural lands. The research area was parcels where the forest overgrowing process was identified. It was verified whether the image processing allows for reliable LULC classification as an identification forest succession area. The PlanetScope classification showed forested areas as 62.77 ha (44.91% of the analyzed area). The overall accuracy of the image classification was 96.40% The airborne laser scanning (ALS) point clouds were used for deriving detailed information about the forest succession process. The precise vegetation parameters i.e., height and canopy cover were determined and presented as raster maps, histograms, or profiles.

Species distribution models (SDMs) are useful for predictive and explanatory purposes, allowing biologists to identify how human and environmental factors influence distributions of plants and animals. Lack of high-resolution climatic variables is one of the challenges for accurately predicting distributions of organisms at local or landscape scales. This study used SDMs to predict four dominant tree species distributions in northern Iran temperate forests (400km2 area) using high-resolution Sentinel-2 data (20 m) and topographic variables. We divided the explanatory variables into four datasets with increasing complexity of Sentinel-2 data and modelled distributions using four statistical and machine learning algorithms: random forest (RF), generalized boosting model (GBM), generalized linear model (GLM), and generalized additive model (GAM). Our results suggested differences in the predictive performance of the four algorithms. We found the most complex dataset, including topographic variables, Sentinel-2 bands, and vegetation and soil indices, gave the best fit for the four tree species, improving the accuracy of models for the different species between 5 and 16%. We then selected the most complex dataset to produce an ensemble model of the modeling algorithms where evaluation criteria were varied for tree species. Our result showed that the performance of SDMs improved using different satellite remote sensing data including raw bands, topographic variables and indices in the Hyrcanian forest, northern Iran. Elevation was a more significant variable than Sentinel bands and Sentinel vegetation indices variables for predicting the tree species distributions. With the Hyrcanian Forest included in this study region of northern Iran recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, a key result of our improved species distribution maps for these four dominant tree species is to support conservation management of forest biodiversity in this region.

The aim of the research carried out in 2018 and financed by the Forest Fund was the analysis of biometric features and parameters of pine stands in the area of the “Bory Tucholskie” National Park (PNBT), where a program of active protection of lichen was initiated in 2017. Environmental analyses were conducted in relation to selected biometric features of trees and stands using laser scanning (LiDAR), including ULS (Unmanned Laser Scanning; RIEGL VUX-1) and TLS (Terrestrial Laser Scanning; FARO FOCUS 3D; X130). Thanks to the application of LiDAR technology, the structure of pine stands was precisely determined by means of a series of descriptive statistics characterizing the 3D spatial structure of vegetation. Using the Trees Crown Model (CHM), the analysis of the volume of tree crowns and the volume of space under canopy was performed. For the analysed sub-compartments, GIS solar analyses were carried out for the solar energy reaching the canopy and the ground level due to active protection of lichen. Multispectral photos were obtained using a specialized RedEdge-M camera (MicaSense) mounted on the UAV multi rotor platform Typhoon H520 (Yuneec). Flights with a thermal camera were also performed in order to detect places on the ground with high temperature. Plant indices: NDVI, NDRE, GNDVI and GRVI were also calculated for sub-compartments. The data obtained in 2017 and 2018 were the basis for spatial and temporal analyses of 4-D changes in stands which were related to the removal of some trees and organic layer (litter, moss layer).

The present research investigated the possibility of using PlanetScope imageries and LiDAR point clouds for land cover assessment, especially vegetation mapping, in degraded and reclaimed areas. Studies were carried out on the former sulfur mine of Jeziórko located in Southeast Poland. In total, more than ca. 2000 ha of this mine area were reclaimed after borehole exploitation and afforestation. We investigated a total area of 216.72 ha. Integration of PlanetScope imageries and LiDAR point clouds processing offers the ability to derive information about the LULC classes and vegetation growth in the analyzed area and indicate the forest succession progress as an effect of the reclamation treatments. In the Jeziórko area, we identified coniferous forest (90.84 ha, 41.91% of the research area), broad-leaved forest (44.02 ha, 20.31%), and transitional woodland shrub areas with herbaceous communities (77.96 ha, 35.97%). The analyses focused on the detection and monitoring of the forest succession processes and obtaining the tree canopy profiles and characteristics of vegetation, i.e., the height and cover density.

Using airborne laser scanning data for automation land cover mapping in the aspect of monitoring forest succession areas

Forest cover change can be detected with high precision using 3D geospatial data and semi-automatic analyses of Remote Sensing data. The aim of our study, performed in Gorce National Park in Poland, was to generate a land use land cover (LULC) map and use it to analyse forest cover change. The study area is a subalpine forest region that has been affected by bark beetle and wind disturbances. The Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis approach was used for classification, with Colour Infrared orthophotos and normalized Digital Surface Models generated using image-matching approach. Gathered results showed that dominating LULC class is coniferous forests (3380 ha; 47% of study area), when second largest class is deciduous forests (2204 ha; 30%). The dead Norway spruce stands (465.5 ha; 6.5%) showed significant increase comparing to 114.1 ha mapped in 1997.

The study was performed for the part of the administrative district Milicz. The authors analysed the parcels where the changes in land use, compared to the cadastral data, were found. The areas of interest were the parcels, where agricultural use was abandoned and the forest succession progressed. This paper investigates the possibility of applying satellite images Sentinel-2A for the automation of land use/land cover change detection, mainly in the aspect of monitoring uncontrolled forest succession. The results of the supervised classification of images Sentinel-2A were referred to the results of the traditionally applied manual vectorization of aerial orthophotomap. The difference for area covered by trees or shrub was 3.85% of the analysed parcels area. Analysing the results for each parcel in which the process of succession occurred, the mean difference is on average 2.25% for one parcel. The mean difference in the absolute value of the total area of participation in individual land use plots was about 1.54% of the analysed area.

The primary objective of this study was to characterise the edaphic conditions of forest areas in the Pieniny National Park (PNP), and to describe the dependencies between properties of forest soils and types of forest plant communities. The “Soil Trophic Index” (SIGg) for mountainous areas was applied. The evaluation of the trophism for 74 forest monitoring employed the soil trophic index for mountainous areas SIGg or SIGgo. Plant communities in the forest monitoring areas were classified according to the Braun-Blanquet’s phytosociological method. Soils of PNP present in the forest monitoring areas were mostly classified as eutrophic brown soils (72.9%), rendzinas (10.8%), brown rendzinas (5.41%), and rubble initial soils (5.41%). Pararendzinas, dystrophic brown soils, and gley soils were less common (total below 5.5%). In the forest monitoring areas of PNP, eutrophic soils predominate over mesotrophic soils. High SIGg index of the soils is caused by high values of acidity and nitrogen content. The Carpathian beech forest Dentario glandulosae-Fagetum and thermophilic beech forest Carici albae-Fagetum associations are characterised by high naturalness and compatibility of theoretical habitats. The soils of the Carpathian fir forest Dentario glandulosae-Fagetum abietetosum subcommunity is characterised by a higher share of silt and clay particles and lower acidity as compared to the Carpathian beech forest Dentario glandulosae-Fagetum typicum subcommunity. The soils of the forest monitoring areas in PNP stand out in terms of their fertility against forest soils in other mountainous areas in Poland.

The aim of the study was to compare the patterns of development of macrophytes and macroinvertebrates in different types of reference mountain rivers. The study is based on reference river sites surveyed throughout the mountains in Poland and Slovakia in two European ecoregions (9—Central Highlands, 10—The Carpathians). A wide range of environmental variables were estimated, including water chemistry, hydromorphology, geology, and the spatial factor. Based on the Jaccard index, macrophyte and macroinvertebrate variation was confirmed between four mountain and upland river types. It was found that the biological diversification is mainly influenced by geological and associated chemical factors. In the case of macroinvertebrates, additionally, the importance of the spatial factor was revealed (difference between ecoregions). Finally, the habitat preferences of various taxa were identified. It was found that extreme mountain conditions can sometimes distort bioindicative response, as was detected in the case of macroinvertebrates in the highest mountain sites. We concluded that consideration of two groups of organisms enables more comprehensive and reliable monitoring than assessment based on a single group, especially when standard bioindicative methods can be distorted by extreme local conditions.

The objective of the paper was the hydrological analysis, in terms of categorizing main watercourses (based on coupled catchments) and marking areas covered by potential impact of the occurrence and activities of the European beaver Castor fiber. At the analysed area – the Forest District Głogów Małopolski there is a population of about 200 beavers in that Forest District. Damage inflicted by beavers was detected on 33.0 ha of the Forest District, while in the area of 13.9 ha the damage was small (below 10%). The monitoring of the beavers’ behaviour and the analysis of their influence on hydrology of the area became an important element of using geoinformationtools in the management of forest areas. ArcHydro ArcGIS Esri module was applied, as an integrated set of tools for hydrographical analysis and modelling. Further steps of the procedure are hydrologic analyses such as: marking river networks on the DTM, filling holes, making maps of the flow direction, making the map of the accumulation flow, defining and segmentation of streams, marking elementary basins, marking coupled basins, making dams in the places, where beavers occur and localization of the area with a visible impact of damming. The result of the study includes maps prepared for the Forest District: the map of main rivers and their basins, categories of watercourses and compartments particularly threatened by beaver’s foraging.

The study was performed on two former sulphur mines located in Southeast Poland: Jezi&oacute, rko, where 216.5 ha of afforested area was reclaimed after borehole exploitation and Mach&oacute, w, where 871.7 ha of dump area was reclaimed after open cast strip mining. The areas were characterized by its terrain structure and vegetation cover resulting from the reclamation process. The types of reclamation applied in these areas were forestry in Jezi&oacute, rko and agroforestry in the Mach&oacute, w post-sulphur mine. The study investigates the possibility of applying the most recent Sentinel-2 (ESA) satellite imageries for land cover mapping, with a primary focus on detecting and monitoring afforested areas. Airborne laser scanning point clouds were used to derive precise information about the spatial (3D) characteristics of vegetation: the height (95th percentile), std. dev. of relative height, and canopy cover. The results of the study show an increase in afforested areas in the former sulphur mines. For the entire analyzed area of Jezi&oacute, rko, forested areas made up 82.0% in the year 2000 (Landsat 7, NASA), 88.8% in 2009 (aerial orthophoto), and 95.5% in 2016 (Sentinel-2, ESA). For Mach&oacute, w, the corresponding results were 46.1% in 2000, 57.3% in 2009, and 60.7% in 2016. A dynamic increase of afforested area was observed, especially in the Jezi&oacute, rko test site, with the presence of different stages of vegetation growth.

The main objectives of our study were to evaluate soil contamination on a zinc-lead spoil heap in the Upper Silesian Industrial Region in southern Poland using pollution indices, and to investigate the relation between soil properties and the natural succession of vegetation. Organic carbon and nitrogen, pH, soil texture, base cations, and heavy metal content were analyzed in soil samples at depths of 0–15 cm below the organic horizon over a regular grid of 14 sampling plots. The contents of Zn, Pb, and Cd exceeded by several times the acceptable thresholds. Measurements of soil enzyme activity were used to evaluate the progress of vegetation development in relation to soil chemical properties. The results indicate that heavy metals had a significant impact on soil enzyme activity and the development of vegetation cover. High contents of Pb and Cd reduced enzyme activity, while this activity increased with increasing amounts of soil organic matter. Further, the accumulative capacities of heavy metals in needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and aboveground biomass of bladder campion (Silene vulgaris (Moench) Garcke) were examined. A high accumulation of Zn, Pb, and Cd in the aboveground tissues of S. vulgaris indicated an unusual tolerance of this species to heavy metals and the possibility of using this species in phytoremediation of post-industrial sites.

The role of image classification based on multi-source, multi-temporal and multi-resolution remote sensed data is on the rise in the environmental studies due to the availability of new satellite sensors, easier access to aerial orthoimages and the automation of image analysis algorithms. The remote sensing technology provides accurate information on the spatial and temporal distribution of land use and land cover (LULC) classes. The presented study focuses on LULC change dynamics (especially secondary forest succession) that occurred between 1974 and 2010 in the Błędów Desert (an area of approx. 1210 ha; a unique refuge habitat – NATURA 2000; South Poland). The methods included: photointerpretation and on-screen digitalization of KH-9 CORONA (1974), aerial orthoimages (2009) and satellite images (LANDSAT 7 ETM+, 1999 and BlackBridge – RapidEye, 2010) and GIS spatial analyses. The results of the study have confirmed the high dynamic of the overgrowth process of the Błędów Desert by secondary forest and shrub vegetation. The bare soils covered 19.3% of the desert area in 1974, the initial vegetation and bush correspondingly 23.1% and 30.5%. In the years 2009/2010 the mentioned classes contained: the bare soils approx. 1.1%, the initial vegetation – 8.7% and bush – 15.8%. The performed classifications and GIS analyses confirmed a continuous increase in the area covered by forests, from 11.6% (KH-9) up to 24.2%, about 25 years later (LANDSAT 7) and in the following 11 years, has shown an increase up to 35.7% (RapidEye 2010).

Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) maps play an important role in an environmental modelling, and for many years efforts have been made to improve and streamline the expensive mapping process. The aim of the study was to create LULC maps of three selected water catchment areas in South Poland using a Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) in order to highlight the advantages of this innovative, semi-automatic method of image analysis. the classification workflow included: multi-stage and multi-scale analyses based on a data fusion approach. Input data consisted mainly of BlackBridge (RapidEye) high resolution satellite imagery, although for distinguishing particular LULC classes, additional satellite images (LANDSAT TM5) and GIS-vector data were used. Accuracy assessment of GEOBIA classification results varied from 0.83 to 0.87 (kappa), depending on the specific catchment area. The main recognized advantages of GEOBIA in the case study were: performing of multi-stage and multi-scale image classification using different features for specific LULC classes and the ability to using knowledge-based classification in conjunction with the data fusion approach in an efficient and reliable manner.

The purpose of this study was to determine the spatial structure of vegetation on the repository of the mine “Fryderyk” in Tarnowskie Góry. Tested area was located in the Upper Silesian Industrial Region (a large industrial region in Poland). It was a unique refuge habitat – Natura2000; PLH240008. The main aspect of this elaboration was to investigate the possible use of geotechniques and generally available geodata for mapping LULC changes and determining the spatial structure of vegetation. The presented study focuses on the analysis of a spatial structure of vegetation in the research area. This exploration was based on aerial images and orthophotomaps from 1947, 1998, 2003, 2009, 2011 and airborne laser scanning data (2011, ISOK project). Forest succession changes which occurred between 1947 and 2011 were analysed. The selected features of vegetation overgrowing spoil heap “Fryderyk” was determined. The results demonstrated a gradual succession of greenery on soil heap. In 1947, 84% of this area was covered by low vegetation. Tree expansion was proceeding in the westerly and northwest direction. In 2011 this canopy layer covered almost 50% of the research area. Parameters such as height of vegetation, crowns length and cover density were calculated by an airborne laser scanning data. These analyses indicated significant diversity in vertical and horizontal structures of vegetation. The study presents some capacities to use airborne laser scanning for an impartial evaluation of the structure of vegetation.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible use of geoinformatics tools and generally available geodata for mapping land cover/use on the reclaimed areas. The choice of subject was dictated by the growing number of such areas and the related problem of their restoration. Modern technology, including GIS, photogrammetry and remote sensing are relevant in assessing the reclamation effects and monitoring of changes taking place on such sites. The LULC classes mapping, supported with thorough knowledge of the operator, is useful tool for the proper reclamation process evaluation. The study was performed for two post-mine sites: reclaimed external spoil heap of the sulfur mine Machów and areas after exploitation of sulfur mine Jeziórko, which are located in the Tarnobrzeski district. The research materials consisted of aerial orthophotos, which were the basis of on-screen vectorization; LANDSAT satellite images, which were used in the pixel and object based classification; and the CORINE Land Cover database as a general reference to the global maps of land cover and land use.

The quarrying industry is changing the local landscape, forming deep open pits and spoil heaps in close proximity to them, especially lignite mines. The impact can include toxic soil material (low pH, heavy metals, oxidations etc.) which is the basis for further reclamation and afforestation. Forests that stand on spoil heaps have very different growth conditions because of the relief (slope, aspect, wind and rainfall shadows, supply of solar energy, etc.) and type of soil that is deposited. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) technology deliver point clouds (XYZ) and derivatives as raster height models (DTM, DSM, nDSM=CHM) which allow the reception of selected 2D and 3D forest parameters (e.g. height, base of the crown, cover, density, volume, biomass, etc). The automation of ALS point cloud processing and integrating the results into GIS helps forest managers to take appropriate decisions on silvicultural treatments in areas with failed plantations (toxic soil, droughts on south-facing slopes; landslides, etc.) or as regular maintenance. The ISOK country-wide project ongoing in Poland will soon deliver ALS point cloud data which can be successfully used for the monitoring and management of many thousands of hectares of destroyed post-industrial areas which according to the law, have to be afforested and transferred back to the State Forest.

This work aims to assess the spatial distribution and concentration of sulfur in the topsoil layer and to determine the relationships between sulfur concentration, soil pH, soil electrical conductivity, and plant cover at the reforested site of the former sulfur mine (Southern Poland). Soil samples were collected from 0 to 20 cm (topsoil) from a total of 86 sampling points in a regular square grid with sides of 150 m. Plant cover was assayed in circular plots with an area of 100 m2, divided into a woody plant layer and herbaceous plant layer. Soil properties such as particle size distribution, pH in KCl and H2O, soil electrical conductivity (EC), soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (NT), and total sulfur (ST) were determined. The degree of soil contamination with sulfur was assessed based on the guidelines of the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation (IUNG), Poland. The results indicate that remediation and application of lime were not fully effective in spatial variation, because 33 points with sulfur contamination above 500 mg kg−1 were observed. These spots occurred irregularly in the topsoil horizons. This high sulfur concentration in the soil did not result in severe acidification (below 4.5) in all cases, most likely due to neutralization from the application of high doses of flotation lime. High vegetative cover occurred at some points with high soil sulfur concentrations, with two points having S concentration above 40,000 mg kg−1 and tree cover about 60%. Numerous points with high soil EC above 1500 μS cm−1 as well as limited vegetation and high soil sulfur concentrations, however, indicate that the reclamation to forest is still not completely successful.

This article discusses potential models of Independent Metering Operator (IMO) in the future energy market, especially in the context of non-discriminatory access of metering data, facilitation of competition and possibility to introduce new services for energy consumers. Several examples of IMO concepts are discussed. Moreover, a framework for definition of IMO target model is introduced - possible parameters of the target model are enumerated and described in the context of their impact on the overall solution. Minimum and maximum costs of implementation of different models are calculated and discussed.

The aim of this study was to elaborate the semiautomatic method of airborne laser scanning (ALS) point-cloud data processing for revising a digital forest map in the Tatra National Park, Poland, and updating attributes stored in its descriptive forest database. We proved that elements such as gaps, clearings, biogroups, dead trees, wind-damaged trees, and areas of low canopy closure could be detected with high accuracy, based on this light detection and ranging technology. By using this method and geographic information system techniques, we were able to update selected attributes of the descriptive database, such as forest stand height, which were collected during earlier forest inventories. Moreover, parameters of some parts of forest stands, such as those growing on extremely steep slopes or isolated ledges that are hard to determine using traditional methods, are easily measured with ALS technology. The difference in stand height using the ALS method and that measured by the traditional forest inventory was equal to 1.58 m (2.87 m for absolute differences).

The work aims to assess soil sulfur contamination degree indicating various reclamation efficiencies within microhabitats formed in the “Jeziorko” inoperative boreholes of former sulfur-mining areas which have been reclaimed to forest. Three plot categories have been initially determined in post-mining areas: category D – degraded, i.e. ineffectively reclaimed and unsuccessfully afforested plots, pine stands category (P), and birch stands (B), successfully afforestated. Afterwards, four circular plots were defined within each of the determined categories (4 replications, i.e. a total of 12 plots). For each plot, cover-abundance (according to the Braun-Blanquet scale) and dominant herbaceous vegetation species, tree species and stand density were determined. Height (Ht) and diameter at breast height (DBH) measurements were taken, and a vitality assessment was completed according to the IUFRO classification. Soil samples were collected at each plot from the plots in 5 points at two different depths (0–5 cm and 5–40 cm) and laboratory analysis were prepared. Soil properties such as texture, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), hydrolytic acidity (Hh), the contents of soil organic carbon SOC, total nitrogen TN, total sulfur TS, and exchangeable cations (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , K + , Na + ) were determined. Soils from the D plot category were characterised by high sulfur contamination, excess salinity (EC), and strong acidity in top soil. These parameters indicated the completed neutralization had not been performed effectively at certain sites. Pine (P) and birch (B) stands categories showed good growth rates and soil parameters indicating the reclamation treatments had been completed successfully.

The paper presents the results from the study concerning the application of airborne laser scanning (ALS) data and derived raster products like the digital surface model (DSM) and the digital terrain model (DTM) for the assessment of the degree of change of the land use based on the forest succession example. Simultaneously, an automated method of ALS data processing was developed based on the normalized (nDSM) and cadastral GIS information. Besides delivering precise information on forest succession, ALS technology is an excellent tool for time-changes spatial analyses. Usage of the ALS data can support the image interpretation process decreasing the subjectivity of the operator. In parallel, a manual vectorization and object classification (object-based image analysis—OBIA) were performed; both based on aerial orthophoto and ALS data. By using integrated ALS point clouds and digital aerial images, one can obtain fast OBIA processing and the determination of areas where the land cover has changed. The Milicz District (central west part of Poland) was chosen as the test site where ALS was to be performed in 2007, together with the digital aerial photos (Vexcel camera; pixel 0.15 m; CIR). The aerial photos were then processed to a CIR orthophoto. The area of study consisted of 68 private parcels (some of them were abandoned; 68.57 ha; scanned cadastral maps from the local survey office; land use information) in the direct neighbourhood of the State Forest, on which a forest succession could often be observed. The operator vectorized forest (trees and shrubs) succession areas on the 2D CIR orthophoto. They were then compared with the results from the OBIA and GIS analysis, based on the normalized digital surface model. The results showed that areas with high vegetation cover were three times larger than the official land cover database (cadastral maps).

The idea for this publication was barn in June 2015, during a meeting of Polish teachers involved with Geographic lnformation Systems. The meeting was initiated by the Department of Geoinformation, Faculty of Geographical Sciences, University of Łódź, which received a grant to organize it. The discussion and presentations from academic teachers representing various universities in Poland were very interesting and sometimes heated. it would be advisable for other educators to familiarise themselves with the aspects of GIS education among Polish geographers, foresters, surveyors and other users. The experience of Geoinformation education in Poland is still modest, so the views of people who have been involved at Polish universities with it since the 1990s should be interesting to readers. Project objectives: The main aim of the project is to start-up attractive and innovative second­ degree studies – geoinformation in mutual cooperation of the FGS and the FMCS, students education, improving the competence of academic teachers, conference organization, publishing, cooperation with practitioners and establishing contacts with partners from Norway. This aim is consistent with the “Ana lysis of the economy's demand for graduates in key field of strategy in the context of the Europe 2020” 2012 and “Strategy for development of higher education in Poland 2020”, in the field of promoting innovative courses, formed collectively with practitioners, raising awareness of the environment. Joint actions of educators and practitioners, supported the by the strengthening of university's hardware, software and spatial data, will ensure a high quality project. The existing cooperation with practitioners indicate that further training is necessary and they would like to see postgraduates in their institutions. The final beneficiaries of the project will be the students and the academical teaching staff and indirectly the economy of the region. Students who graduate will be the main recipient of the project, the next will be teaching staff who will have contact with the practices and Norwegian partners with similar interests. In broad terms the project will benefit Polish and European economy and environment.
