Prosopis pugionata (Fabaceae) is a halophyte tree species that grows exclusively in Argentina’s arid environments, whose woodlands are mainly affected by fires and overgrazing. Here, we describe the wood anatomy and fire wounds of P. pugionata and their relationship with plant size and bark thickness. Besides, we attempt to determine the potential of P. pugionata for dendrochronological studies in order to date fire events throughout time. We tested the hypothesis that P. pugionataforms datable fire wounds, allowing its use for dendrochronological studies. The study area is located in the arid Argentine Chaco region. Seventeen individuals, varying from 15 to 65 years of age, were randomly sampled and bole disks were taken at 0.3, 1.3 and 2.3 m high. P. pugionatais a diffuse and semi-ring-porous hardwood species with growth rings delimited by marginal parenchyma bands. The bark is longitudinally fissured, with an average thickness of 0.19 cm, and a scarce increase with age. Seventy-seven percent of the samples showed fire wounds (). We identified fire scars (70%) and marks (30%), and differentiated them by wood growth interruption in the former. Sixty-one percent of fire wounds affected less than 20% of the cambial perimeter and there were no significant effects of age, bole diameter, bole height and bark thickness on the cambial damage percentage. After cross-dating, P. pugionata showed a mean correlation value between series of 0.5, which represents an accurate potential for dendrochronological studies. Twenty wildfires were dated from 1943 to 2007 in the study area with a fire frequency of 0.40 fires/year and a mean fire interval of 2.5 years. Wildfires frequency increased from 1980 to 0.48 fires/year and a mean fire interval of 2 years. Our results indicate that P. pugionata has the potential to date fires, considering its potential for dendrochronological studies, its ability to survive recurrent fires and forms identifiable wound scars in the wood.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the safety and efficacy of unilateral topical application of rocuronium bromide in scops owls. ANIMALS STUDIED Ten healthy adult scops owls. PROCEDURES Birds weighting between 82-111 g were enrolled. Complete physical and ophthalmic examinations were performed. Each animal received a single dose of 0.15 mg of rocuronium bromide (30 µL) in a randomly selected eye. Static pupillometric evaluations were performed before and after drug instillation at 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes, in a room with fixed light intensity. Physical and ophthalmic examinations were carried out to evaluate possible adverse effects. RESULTS Median pupil (95% CI) size at t0 was 7.10 mm (5.51-7.41) for placebo eyes and 7.22 mm (6.93-7.48) for treated eyes, showing no statistical differences (P > .05). When compared to the placebo eye, significant mydriasis was achieved at t30 [8.18 mm (7.22-9.00)] (P = .014) and lasting until t90 [7.35 mm (6.20-9.52)] (P = .004). Maximal mydriasis was obtained at t60 [8.63 mm (7.72-9.81)] (P = .001). During this period, the treated eye no longer responded to direct light stimulation. Complete mydriasis was observed in 5/10 birds (mean weight 97.4 g). Pupil size at t90 and t120 did not differ from baseline (P > .05) in treated eyes. No adverse effects were seen during the study period. CONCLUSION Single-dose topical rocuronium bromide (0.15 mg) is a safe and effective medium duration mydriatic agent in scops owls. Further studies are needed to evaluate bilateral topical application and standardize the mydriatic protocol.

Background Hermann's tortoise is one of the most popular reptiles kept as pet which underlines the importance to reinforce the information needed to provide advanced and adequate veterinary care in exotic animal species. Therefore, the purpose of this study, performed in Testudo hermanni, was to evaluate corneal touch threshold (CTT) and its feasibility according to age and body weight. Methods Fifty-one healthy tortoises were classified in 2 groups (≤2 years [young; n = 25] and 8–10 years [subadult; n = 26]). Central CTT was measured by means of a Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer and defined as the filament length required to elicit a blink in at least 3/5 applications. CTT feasibility according to body weight was also evaluated by diving the individuals in weight groups consisting of “lighter” ( Results Mean CTT was 5.99 cm for the whole population (90% CI: 5.87–6.11), being 5.98 cm for young (90% CI: 5.81–6.15) and 6 cm for all subadult (90% CI: 6.00–6.00) tortoises, and 5.98 cm for lighter (90% CI: 5.84–6.13) and 6 cm for all heavier (90% CI: 6.00–6.00) tortoises. No statistical differences were detected between age and weight groups (P = 0.159 and P = 0.159, respectively). Three animals presented unilateral faint fluorescein uptake postesthesiometry (3/51; 2.9%) that resolved spontaneously within 48 hours. Conclusions and clinical relevance Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer was a safe means of confirming high corneal sensitivity in all tortoises, which was high regardless of age. Increasing filament lengths would ultimately be required to determine the true corneal sensitivity scope of Testudo hermanni.

Objectives Leishmaniosis is a vector-borne disease and in European countries is caused by Leishmania infantum. Cats are considered secondary reservoirs of the infection in endemic areas. The objective of this retrospective study is to describe the clinical findings, diagnosis, treatment and outcome of feline leishmaniosis (FeL) in 16 cats in Spain. Methods Medical records of cats diagnosed with leishmaniosis were retrospectively reviewed for cases that met the following inclusion criteria: identification of Leishmania organisms and/or DNA on cytological and/or histological specimens and/or a high anti- Leishmania antibody titre, compatible clinical findings and pathological abnormalities. Results Sixteen cats met the inclusion criteria, all of which were living in areas endemic for canine leishmaniosis. Systemic signs were present in 11 cases (68.8%). The most common clinical signs on presentation included cutaneous lesions in 12 cats (75%), ocular disease in six cats (37.5%) and anorexia in six cats (37.5%). A polyclonal gammopathy was noted in 12 cats (85.7%). Non-regenerative anaemia and renal abnormalities were present in six (37.5%) and five patients (31.3%), respectively. In nine cats (56.3%), immunosuppressive conditions/comorbidities were identified. The diagnosis was made in eight of the cats (50%) by cytology, but a combination of diagnostic tests was needed for definitive diagnosis in the remaining patients. Twelve cats (75%) were treated specifically for leishmaniosis. Five of the 12 cats (41.7%) did not improve with treatment. The median survival time in the group of patients treated specifically for leishmaniosis was 17 months. Median survival of patients treated with concomitant diseases was 13 months vs 41 months in those without, although this was not statistically significant ( P = 0.557). Conclusions and relevance Presentation of FeL appears to be similar to canine leishmaniosis but with some specific features: ulcerative and nodular skin lesions are the predominant cutaneous signs; cats with immunosuppressive conditions or coexisting diseases were more commonly present than typically seen in dogs (mainly feline immunodeficiency virus). A combination of diagnostic tests may be needed for definitive diagnosis.

Objective To describe and evaluate the use of corneoconjunctival transposition (CTT) as a surgical treatment for canine deep stromal ulcers, descemetoceles, and full-thickness corneal defects and to determine its efficacy in preserving corneal graft transparency and vision. Animals studied One hundred client-owned dogs with deep stromal ulcers, descemetoceles, or full-thickness corneal defects. Methods Medical records of canine patients that underwent CCT, from 2012 to 2018, were reviewed. Only, patients with preoperative positive consensual pupillary light and dazzle reflexes were included. Results There were 59 males and 41 females, from 0.3 to 17 years. Brachycephalic breeds were overrepresented (65%). All patients were unilaterally affected, with 16 deep stromal ulcers, 33 descemetoceles, and 51 corneal perforations, of a median (range) size of 4 (2-8) mm. The central cornea was affected in the majority of cases (57%), and euryblepharon and keratoconjunctivitis sicca were the most common concurrent ocular diseases (42% and 40%, respectively). The graft was most frequently harvested from dorsal (67%), and 9/0 absorbable suture material was used. Intraoperative and postoperative complications were seen in 7 and 21 cases, respectively. Mean follow-up time was 107.8 days. Vision was preserved in 96% patients, with 62% showing faint to mild opacification. Among the statistically analyzed variables, euryblepharon and pigmentary keratitis were found to be significantly associated with greater corneal graft opacification (P = .040 and P = .028, respectively). Conclusions Corneoconjunctival transposition is an effective surgical treatment for deep stromal, descemetocele, and full-thickness corneal defects in dogs, achieving a highly satisfactory degree of corneal graft transparency and preserving vision.

Objective To evaluate microbiological, histological, and ultrastructural characteristics of short-term cryopreserved (STC) equine corneoscleral tissue ( 7 years). Animals studied Thirty-four healthy equine globes. Procedure After a decontamination protocol, globes were enucleated and stored at -20°C in broad-spectrum antibiotics. Corneoscleral tissue was evaluated at different storage periods: 1 month-1 year (20 eyes) and 7-9 years (12 eyes). Two eyes were used as controls. Microbiologic study included direct (blood, McConkey, and Sabouraud agars) and enrichment (brain-heart infusion broth) cultures. Cryopreservation artifacts were evaluated by hematoxylin-eosin. Corneoscleral collagen organization and number of normal and dead keratocytes were established by transmission electron microscopy. Results All microbiologic direct cultures were negative. Enrichment cultures were positive in 12.5% of corneal and 59.4% of scleral tissues (pcornea = 0.136; psclera = 1.000). Cryopreservation artifacts were most commonly observed in LTC tissues (P = 0.002). Normal keratocytes were predominant in STC corneas (STC 60% and LTC 0%) and apoptotic ones in LTC (STC 40% and LTC 90%), whereas necrotic keratocytes were only seen in LTC (LTC 10%) (P = 0.001). No structural differences were detected in collagen organization between STC and LTC (pcornea = 1.000; psclera = 0.703). Conclusions Cryopreservation of equine corneoscleral tissue did not yield direct bacterial contamination. Apoptosis is the main cause of death of cryopreserved equine keratocytes. Based on the lack of significant structural differences between STC and LTC samples, these cryopreserved tissues could potentially be used for tectonic support for at least 9 years without structural or microbiological impediment.

OBJECTIVE To describe the surgical technique and outcome of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) for treatment of complicated corneal ulcers in dogs. ANIMALS STUDIED One hundred and eleven dogs. PROCEDURE Medical records (2010-2017) were reviewed to identify canine patients that underwent AMT for the treatment of complicated corneal ulcers. Quantitative and ordinal variables were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test and Fisher's Exact test. RESULTS Brachycephalic breeds were overrepresented (74/111; 66.6%). Three dogs were bilaterally affected. Fifty-one had melting ulcers (51/114; 44.7%), 33 stromal ulcers (33/63; 52.4%), 17 descemetoceles (17/63; 27%), and 13 perforations (13/63;20.6%). Mean defect size was 6.2 mm (2-18 mm). Human (32/114; 28.1%) or bovine (82/114; 71.9%) (AmnioVet(R)) cryopreserved amniotic membranes were used. Monolayer (31/114; 27.2%), bilayer (44/114; 38.6%) or multilayer technique (39/114; 34.2%) was performed, being anchored to the limbus (52/114; 45.6%), to the defect (48/114; 42.1%) or both (14/114; 12.3%). Mean epithelial healing and follow-up times were 25.6 days (15-45) and 98.7 days (21-400), respectively. Most common postsurgical complications included pigmentation (10/114; 8.8%) and graft failure (5/114; 4.4%). El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto del hábitat en la aplicación de índices bióticos (BI) basados en macroinvertebrados bentónicos. Se muestrearon dos hábitats, (macrófitas y sedimentos), en dos sitios del río Dulce (Cuenca Salí-Dulce, Argentina): S1 (27° 31’ 5.82” S, 64° 52’ 41.37” O) y S2 (27° 28’ 36.21” S, 64°49’ 30.30” O). El muestreo se realizó con caudal bajo, octubre/2015. Se midió pH, conductividad eléctrica (CE μS/cm), temperatura (T °C), sólidos suspendidos totales (SST mg/L), oxígeno disuelto (OD mg/L) y demanda biológica de oxígeno (DBO5 mg/L). Los macroinvertebrados se filtraron con red de nylon de 250 μm y se identificaron al nivel taxonómico requerido para la aplicación de los IB. Se analizaron riqueza taxonómica y diversidad. Se aplicaron tres IB: el IBMWP, el BMWP’ adaptado al río Salí y el IMRP desarrollado para la ecoregión Pampa de Argentina. También se aplicó el ASPT asociado con los BMWP’. Los parámetros físicos y químicos mostraron buena calidad del agua, con un pH promedio de 8,57; CE 773 μS/cm; T 19,5°C; SST 9,27 mg/L; OD 7,49 mg/L y DBO5 3,29 mg/L. Los taxones registrados fueron 34 y la diversidad fue mayor en las macrófitas que en los sedimentos. Los IB mostraron resultados diferentes según el hábitat donde se aplicaron. Las macrófitas contribuyeron con el doble de taxones a los IB, en comparación con los sedimentos. Los valores de ASPT correspondieron a calidad del agua impactada. El IMRP fue el más inclusivo en cantidad de taxones para el cálculo. La conclusión es que el tipo de hábitats influye en la aplicación de los IB., The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of habitat on the application of biotic indices (BI) based on benthic macroinvertebrates. Two different habitats were sampled, (macrophytes patches and sediments), in two sites in the Dulce River (Salí-Dulce basin, Argentina): S1 (27° 31’ 5.82” S, 64°52’41.37” W) and S2 (27° 28’ 36.21” S, 64° 49’ 30.30” W). Sampling was conducted in a low-flow period, 2015-October. The variables measured were pH, electric conductivity (EC μS/cm), temperature (T °C), total suspended solids (TSS mg/L), dissolved oxygen (OD mg/L) and biological oxygen demand (BOD5 mg/L). Macroinvertebrates were filtered with a nylon net of 250 μm pore size and were identified at the required taxonomic level for BI application. Taxonomic richness and diversity were analyzed. Three BI were applied: the IBMWP for the Iberian Peninsula, the BMWP’ adapted for Salí River basin and the IMRP developed for the Pampean ecoregion from Argentina. Also score ASPT associated with BMWP’ was applied. Physical and chemical parameters showed good water quality, with a pH average of 8.57; EC 773 μS/cm; T 19.5°C; TSS 9.27 mg/L; DO 7.49 mg/L; and BOD5 3.29 mg/L. The registered taxa were 34 and the diversity was greater in macrophytes than in sediments. The BI showed different results according to the habitat where they were applied. Macrophytes contribute with twice of the taxa for the BI calculations, compared with sediments. The ASPT values corresponded to impacted water quality. Objective To evaluate the effect of topical cyclopentolate hydrochloride (CH) on quantitative pupillometric readings (PR), tear production (TP), and intraocular pressure (IOP) in healthy horses. Animals studied Fourteen client-owned horses. Procedures In a two-phase design study, each animal received 1% CH ophthalmic solution in the left eye [treated] and 0.9% NaCl in the right eye [control] (0.2 mL each). In the first phase (n = 7), TP, IOP, and PR assessment was performed by Schirmer tear test I, rebound tonometry and static pupillometry, at 1, 8, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 148, 172, and 196-hours post-instillation. In the second phase (n = 7), plateau mydriasis was evaluated by assessing PR hourly for 8 hours post-instillation. For PR assessment, pupil area (PA), vertical diameter (VPD), and horizontal diameter (HPD) were recorded. All pupillometries were obtained in a room with fixed light intensity (45-60 lux). Statistical analysis was performed by generalized estimating equations method for the effect on parameters over time. Results After topical CH, significant differences in pupil dilation were seen from 1 to 172 hours for VPD and from 8 to 24 hours for PA, without significant differences on HPD over time. In the second phase, plateau PA and VPD were reached at 3 hours, while plateau HPD at 2 hours. No significant effects were detected on TP and IOP in both eyes at any time, nor on PR of the nontreated eyes. Conclusions Topical 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride could be considered an effective and safe option when a mydriatic/cycloplegic drug is needed in horses.

OBJECTIVE To determine endothelial cell density (ECD) and morphology and morphometry of corneal endothelial cells in the tawny owl (Strix aluco), as well as to report the effects of aging on these parameters. ANIMAL STUDY AND PROCEDURES Twenty tawny owls were included in the study and classified into 2 groups according to their age: fledglings ( 1 year old). Central corneal endothelium was studied by means of noncontact specular microscopy (Specular Microscope SP-2000P; Topcon, Tokyo, Japan), and results for ECD (cells/mm2 ), mean cell area ((MCA (μm2 )), polymegathism (CV), and pleomorphism (% hexagonal cells) were obtained. Results are described by median, interquartile range (25th, 75th percentiles), and absolute range for ECD, MCA, pleomorphism, and polymegathism. In addition, inferential analyses by Mann-Whitney U test were also performed. A two-tailed Type I error of 5% was established. RESULTS Results in fledglings were as follows: ECD = 2864 cells/mm2 , MCA = 348 μm2 , % hexagonal cells = 72.75%, and CV = 21. Results in adults were as follows: ECD = 2602 cells/mm2 , MCA = 384 μm2 , % hexagonal cells = 78.83%, and CV = 16. Shrub encroachment is frequent in grazing lands in the Chaco region, Argentina. Fire is used by cattlemen to reduce the dominance of the shrub stands, improve forage standing biomass and quality, and enhance grazing accessibility. In this research, we assessed the combined effect of roller chopping + fire on the plant canopy of three native shrub species, Acacia gilliessi, Celtis ehrenbergiana, and Schinus bumelioides. We used a randomized design, with three factors, year, burn dates, and fine fuel load. Before the burn, the area received a roller-chopping treatment. Canopy volume reduction was assessed using, DifV = −1*(Vi − Va) and DifS = −1*(Si − Sa), respectively, where V = plant volume and S = sprout number. Suffixes i and a represent measurements taken before the roller-chopping treatment and one growth season after the fire, respectively. Fire intensity, headfire residence time, woody residues, and initial plant volume were evaluated as covariates. Results indicate a negative fire effect on canopy volume and sprouting. A. gilliesi was more susceptible to fire than the other two species. High fine fuel load and high fire intensity generated a severe effect on sprout number. The same trend was observed for coarse fuels. The canopy volume reduction was greater in A. gilliesi than the other species, reaffirming its high susceptibility to fire. Head fires were faster in 2009 than in 2008 and in the late than in the early burn dates. These results suggest that mechanical + fire treatments can be useful management tools for controlling shrub encroachment in the western Chaco. Fil: Ledesma, R.. Fifty-two guinea pigs ( Cavia porcellus ) with normal ophthalmic examinations were included in this study to determine whether there are differences in the intraocular pressure (IOP) according to age, while assessing the clinical usefulness of 2 different tonometry methods for this species. The animals were divided into 2 groups according to age: young (4 weeks old, 29 animals) and adult (3 to 36 months, 23 animals). Tonometry was performed oculus utro (OU) in the central cornea according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Only measurements with low standard deviation (SD 0.05) nor between sexes (p > 0.05). Biological monitoring requires a comprehensive baseline of assemblage distribution patterns and their environmental drivers. In this study we evaluated benthic macroinvertebrates in a regulated river, located in a semi-arid region, which has a seasonal flood pulse and is affected by several anthropogenic pressures. Taxonomic and trophic structures of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages were analysed in terms of their longitudinal distribution, hydrological regime and environmental factors, including the effects of hydromorphology, riparian land use and water abstraction. Most taxa were generalists and classified in the collector–gatherer functional feeding group. A large taxonomic replacement was associated with hydromorphological characteristics. Local environmental variables were critical for macroinvertebrate assemblages. There was significant temporal variability regarding seasonal flood pulse. Water abstraction for irrigation had a strong effect on assemblage structure. We suggest some challenges and issues for successful implementation of biomonitoring tools in the Dulce River, related primarily to high spatiotemporal variability.

OBJECTIVE To determine corneal thickness (CT), endothelial cell density (ECD), and morphological and morphometric features of caprine eyes and to assess effects of aging on these variables. SAMPLE 27 healthy eyes of 19 Murciano-Granadina goats. PROCEDURES Goats were classified into 2 age groups (kids, 14 months old [14 eyes]; and adults, 7 to 10 years old [13 eyes]). The ECD and CT were calculated in the central cornea and 4 peripheral quadrants. Mean cell area (MCA), pleomorphism (percentage of hexagonal cells), and polymegathism were evaluated in the central cornea. RESULTS Median values for kids were determined for ECD (3,831 cells/mm2; inter-quartile [25th to 75th percentile] range [IQR], 3,669 to 4,011 cells/mm2), CT (608 μm; IQR, 573 to 655 μm), MCA (255 μm2; IQR, 243 to 272 μm2), pleomorphism (80.53%; IQR, 78.83% to 83.30%), and polymegathism (19; IQR, 18 to 22). Median values for adults were determined for ECD (2,101 cells/mm2; IQR, 1,966 to 2,251 cells/mm2), CT (706 μm; IQR, 670 to 730 μm), MCA (466 μm2; IQR, 425 to 507 μm2), pleomorphism (67.80%; IQR, 65.50% to 70.00%), and polymegathism (21; IQR, 15 to 26). Values differed significantly between the 2 groups for all variables, except polymegathism. For both groups, the dorsal and temporal quadrants were the thickest and thinnest, respectively. Ventral ECD was the lowest for both groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE ECD decreased with age, whereas MCA, pleomorphism, and CT increased. Moreover, differences among regions of the cornea indicated that the central cornea should not be considered as representative of the entire cornea.

Objective To describe ocular findings associated with Rhodococcus equi bronchopneumonia in foals, and to determine whether severity of the ocular lesions is related with outcome. Animals studied Foals diagnosed with R equi infection at the VTH-UAB from January 2002 to December 2017. Procedure Rhodococcus equi infection was diagnosed by means of clinical signs, radiographic/ultrasonographic findings, and/or positive culture. In all the foals, a complete ophthalmic examination by a boarded ophthalmologist was performed and ocular signs were recorded and graded (0-4). Results Thirty-nine foals were included in the study, from which 12 showed signs of bilateral anterior uveitis (30.8%). Among these, three foals were classified as mildly uveitis-affected (MUA:7.7%) and nine as severely uveitis-affected (SUA:23.1%). Five SUA foals showed green aqueous flare (5/9;55.5%). Despite the systemic treatment, 9/39 sick foals died (23.1%), the fatality rate being different between groups: SUA (4/9;44.4%), MUA (0/3; 0%) and nonuveitis-affected foals (5/27;18.5%). Among SUA foals, only one with green aqueous flare died (1/5;20%). Conclusion Bilateral anterior uveitis is highly prevalent in foals with R equi pneumonia (30.8%). The severity of anterior uveitis might be considered a nonsurvival prognostic factor and, until proven otherwise, green aqueous flare could be taken as a strongly suggestive ocular sign of the disease. Findings of this study remark the clinical relevance of performing a complete ophthalmic examination in sick foals, in order to help in the diagnosis and prognosis of uveal diseases, as well as to guaranteeing visual soundness.

Background Rabbits are currently not a good model for studying diseases of the corneal endothelium because their corneal endothelial cells (CECs) maintain a high proliferative capacity throughout almost all their life. Addressing this particular feature might allow the use of this species for such a purpose. The aim of this study was to evaluate the corneal endothelial injury after intracameral benzalkonium chloride (BAC) injection into rabbit eyes ex vivo, and to establish the most suitable starting dose for an in vivo study aimed at developing an animal model of corneal endothelial disease. Results Forty rabbit eyes obtained postmortem by transconjunctival enucleation were divided into 8 groups according to the injected compound: Control (no injection), BSS, and increasing BAC concentrations (0.005%, 0.01%, 0.025%, 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.2%). At 0, 6, 24 and 48 h, ophthalmologic examination of the anterior segment, pachymetry and specular microscopy were performed, and corneas were finally vital-stained and observed under the light microscope to assess the CECs morphology and mortality rate. When compared to BSS, CECs density started to decrease significantly at 0.025% BAC concentration, while mean cell area, corneal edema and corneal thickness began to increase significantly at 0.05%, 0.005% and 0.1% BAC concentrations, respectively. Concentrations of 0.05% BAC and above caused significant increases in CECs pleomorphism (decreased hexagonality) and mortality, compared to control and BSS. Conclusions Ex vivo intracameral BAC injection induces corneal endothelial toxicity in rabbits. However, confirmatory in vivo studies are required to develop the desired model, with 0.05% BAC being a suggested starting point.

Objective The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of topical 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride (CH) on tear production (TP), pupil size (PS), and intraocular pressure (IOP) in dogs. Animal studied Fifteen healthy beagle dogs from the UAB research-teaching colony. Procedure Dogs without ocular diseases were included. Each animal received one drop of 1% CH ophthalmic solution in a randomly selected eye. TP, PS, and IOP were evaluated by means of STT-1, static pupillometry, and rebound tonometry, respectively. Evaluations were performed before drug instillation and at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 30, 36, 48, 54, 60, 72, 84, and 96 h postinstillation. Examinations took place in a room with fixed light intensity (40–55 lux). Statistical analysis was performed by means of generalized estimating equations for the effect on STT-1, pupil size, and IOP over time. Results After unilateral application of 1% CH, significant pupillary dilation started at 30 min, reached its maximum at 12 h, and returned to pre-instillation size after 72 h. No significant effects were found on TP or IOP, at any time. No effects were observed in the untreated eye on any of the parameters evaluated. Conclusion Cyclopentolate hydrochloride could be considered a therapeutic alternative when use of a cycloplegic drug is needed and effects on tear production and IOP are unwanted.

Objective The purpose of the study was to determine corneal thickness (CT), endothelial cell density (ECD), morphology, and morphometry in ovine eyes, and to report the effects of age and breed on these parameters. Animals studied and procedures Forty-eight healthy ovine eyes were classified into six groups (eight eyes per group) according to animals' age (lambs and adults) and breed (Manchega, Ripollesa, and Rasa Aragonesa). Endothelial cell density (cells/mm2) and CT (μm) were calculated in the central cornea and four peripheral quadrants by means of specular microscopy. Mean cell area (MCA (μm2)), pleomorphism (% hexagonal cells), and polymegethism (CV) were evaluated in the central cornea. Statistics consisted of an ANOVA model and a LSD test for the post hoc analysis. Results Results in lambs were as follows: ECD = 3532 ± 259, CT = 699 ± 56, MCA = 283 ± 22, % hexagonal cells = 75.64 ± 3.09, and CV = 18 ± 8.4; and in adults: ECD = 2204 ± 261, CT = 804 ± 87, MCA = 473 ± 53, % hexagonal cells = 69.9 ± 3.42, and CV = 18.1 ± 5.2. To evaluate microbiological, histological, and ultrastructural characteristics of short-term cryopreserved (STC) canine corneoscleral tissue (1 year) and to compare it with long-term cryopreserved (LTC) tissue (6 years).Thirty-six healthy canine globes.After a decontamination protocol, globes were enucleated and stored at -20 °C. Corneoscleral tissue was evaluated at different periods:1 year (20 eyes) and6 years (12 eyes). Four eyes were used as controls. Microbiologic study included direct (blood, McConkey and Sabouraud agars) and enrichment (brain-heart infusion broth) cultures. Cryopreservation artifacts were evaluated by hematoxylin-eosin. Corneoscleral collagen organization and number of normal and dead keratocytes were established by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) was also used for keratocyte characterization.Corneal microbial growth was observed in 25% of the direct STC cultures, and in 47.4% and 16.7% of the enriched STC and LTC cultures, respectively. Scleral STC direct cultures were 30% positive, while enrichment cultures were positive in 66.7% and 16.7% of the STC and LTC, respectively (P = 0.011). Cryopreservation artifacts were higher in LTC tissues (P 0.001). Apoptotic keratocytes were predominant by TEM and TUNEL, in both STC and LTC. Minimal structural differences were detected in collagen organization between STC and LTC.Cryopreservation of canine corneoscleral tissue seems to reduce bacterial contamination over time. Apoptosis is the main way of death of cryopreserved canine keratocytes. Based on the lack of significant structural differences between STC and LTC samples, these cryopreserved tissues could potentially be used for tectonic support for at least 8 years without structural or microbiological impediment.

Aim: Our aim in this study was evaluate the effects of flow regulation for irrigation on the macroinvertebrate assemblages in a semiarid river. Methods:We sampled two reaches in Dulce River; one placed upstream a weir that diverts flow into a network of irrigation channels and the other downstream that weir, in the assessment of the fluvial discontinuity. We assess the differences among reaches and sites, environmental variables, invertebrate density, richness and Shannon-Wiener index applying non-parametric analyses of variance Kruskal Wallis. The similarity percentage analysis (SIMPER) was used to identify which species contributed to the dissimilarities on macroinvertebrate assemblage structure. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was performed with the total set of samples to explore macroinvertebrate distribution in reaches and associations of the assemblages with habitat variables. Results .The density, richness and Shannon index values did not show differences between the reaches located upstream and downstream. Beta diversity (Whittaker) was 0.72 among upstream sites, 0.56 among downstream sites and higher species turnover (0.73) was obtained between both reaches. The Canonical Correspondence Analysis explained 46.71% of the variance differentiating upstream sites explained by higher values of organic matter of bottom sediments and discharge, high density of Nais communis, Bothrioneurum americanum, Pelomus, Stephensoniana trivandrana, Pristina menoni, P. jenkinae, P.longidentata, P. americana, Dero obtusa, Endotribelos, Heleobia and Turbellaria. The downstream sites were associated to coarser substratum and higher density of Lopescladius, Polypedilum, Cricotopus, Thienamaniella, Cryptochironomus, Baetidae, Nematoda and Corbicula fluminea. Conclusions: The low-flow disturbance had effects on the composition of the benthic invertebrate assemblages, but attributes (such as density and richness) showed a lower variability probably because of taxa replacement. Objetivo: Nosso objetivo neste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da regulação do fluxo de um rio semi-árido utilizado para irrigação sobre as assembleias de macroinvertebrados. Métodos: Nós amostramos duas seções no rio Dulce River, um trecho localizado a montante da barragem de desvio em Los Quiroga e outro a justante, para avaliação da descontinuidade fluvial. Nós avaliamos as diferenças entre os trechos e sítios de amostragem com relação às variáveis ambientais, a densidade de invertebrados, a riqueza e o índice de Shannon aplicando análise de variância não-paramétrica de Kruskal-Wallis. A Análise de Porcentagem de Similaridade (SIMPER) foi usada para identificar quais espécies contribuiram para as dissimilaridades da estrutura das assembleias de macroinvertebrados. Purpose To describe the outcome of modified brow suspension technique for the treatment of upper eyelid pseudoptosis in canine patients with redundant frontal skin folds. Methods Medical records from 1999 to 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. Only dogs that underwent modified brow suspension for treating bilateral pseudoptosis were included in the study. Recorded data included breed, age, gender, main ophthalmic complaint, ocular findings, suture material used for brow suspension, number of slings placed, postoperative treatment, complications, follow-up time, and outcome. Results Twenty-five adult dogs of different gender and breed fulfilled the inclusion criteria, with the Shar-Pei being overrepresented (19/25;76%). The main complaint at first presentation was mucopurulent discharge (10/25;40%) and blepharospasm (10/25;40%). Concurrent corneal disease was diagnosed in 47 eyes (47/50;94%). Monofilament polyamide was the most frequently used suture material (46/50;92%). Number of slings placed varied, with one in two eyes (4%), two in 28 eyes (56%), three in 17 eyes (34%), and four in three eyes (6%). Complications were seen in three eyes (6%): suture rupture (one eye; 2%) and skin abscess (two eyes; 4%). Mean follow-up time was 17.6 months (1-84 months), with no cases of fold dermatitis or dermatologic disease observed within this period. Good esthetic and functional outcomes were obtained in 47 eyes at first intervention (97%) and in all patients after re-intervention. Conclusions The modified brow suspension technique described offers a surgical alternative for dogs with pseudoptosis secondary to redundant frontal skin folds that potentially reduces anesthetic time and facial changes.

Resumen Introduccion El funcionamiento intelectual limite (FIL) se conceptualiza actualmente como la barrera que separa el funcionamiento intelectual «normal» de la discapacidad intelectual (CI 71-85). A pesar de su magnitud, su prevalencia no puede ser cuantificada y no se ha operativizado su diagnostico. Objetivos Elaborar un marco conceptual para el FIL y establecer directrices de consenso que permitan la aplicacion de una atencion integral centrada en la persona. Metodologia Se utilizo una metodologia mixta cualitativa que combinaba un analisis del marco conceptual con el desarrollo de grupos nominales. Se realizo una revision bibliografica extensiva en bases de datos de evidencia medica, publicaciones cientificas y literatura gris. Se estudio la informacion encontrada y se redacto un documento de marco conceptual sobre el FIL. Resultados Las publicaciones centradas en el colectivo de personas con FIL son escasas. El termino que mayor numero de publicaciones arrojo fue «Borderline Intelligence». Se detectaron una serie de temas sobre los que era necesario alcanzar un consenso y se redacto un documento con las conclusiones del grupo de trabajo. Conclusiones Es necesario establecer un consenso a nivel internacional sobre el constructo del FIL y sus criterios operativos, y desarrollar instrumentos especificos de deteccion y diagnostico. Tambien es necesario elaborar criterios que permitan calcular su incidencia y prevalencia. Saber que intervenciones son las mas adecuadas y cuales son las necesidades de atencion que presenta este colectivo es de vital importancia para implementar un modelo de atencion integral centrado en la persona.

Introduction The Borderline Intellectual Functioning (BIF) is conceptualised as the frontier that delimits “normal” intellectual functioning from intellectual disability (IQ 71–85). In spite of its magnitude, its prevalence cannot be quantified and its diagnosis has not yet been defined. Objectives To elaborate a conceptual framework and to establish consensus guidelines. Method A mixed qualitative methodology, including frame analysis and nominal groups techniques, was used. The literature was extensively reviewed in evidence based medical databases, scientific publications, and the grey literature. This information was studied and a framing document was prepared. Results Scientific publications covering BIF are scarce. The term that yields a bigger number of results is “Borderline Intelligence”. The Working Group detected a number of areas in which consensus was needed and wrote a consensus document covering the conclusions of the experts and the framing document. Conclusions It is a priority to reach an international consensus about the BIF construct and its operative criteria, as well as to develop specific tools for screening and diagnosis. It is also necessary to define criteria that enable its incidence and prevalence. To know what interventions are the most efficient, and what are the needs of this population, is vital to implement an integral model of care centred on the individual.

Purpose To establish the dose of subretinal sodium iodate (NaIO3) in order to create a toxin-induced large animal model of selective circumscribed atrophy of outer retinal layers, the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), and photoreceptors, by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and immunocytochemistry. Methods Fifteen male and female healthy Yorkshire pigs received unilateral subretinal escalating doses of NaIO3 under general anesthesia. In all the animals, volumes of 0.1 to 0.2 mL NaIO3 were injected into the subretinal space of the area centralis through a 23/38-gauge subretinal cannula. Control SD-OCTs were performed 1 and 2 months after the surgery, at which time pigs were euthanized and eyes enucleated. Globes were routinely processed for histologic and immunohistochemical evaluation. Results Spectral-domain OCT and immunohistochemistry revealed circumscribed and well-demarcated funduscopic lesions, limited to the outer retinal layers in pigs treated with 0.01 mg/mL subretinal sodium iodate. Conclusions The swine model of a controlled area of circumscribed retinal damage, with well-delimited borders, and selectively of the outer layers of the retina presented herein shows several clinical and histologic features of geographic atrophy in AMD. Therefore, it may represent a valuable tool in the investigation of new emerging regenerative therapies that aim to restore visual function, such as stem cell transplantation or optogenetics.

Objective To describe corneal grafting for the treatment of full-thickness corneal defects in dogs and to determine its effectiveness in preserving vision. Methods A review of the medical records of dogs that underwent corneal grafting following corneal perforations (≥3 mm) at the VTH-UAB from 2002 to 2012 was carried out. Results Fifty dogs of different breed, age and gender were included. Brachycephalic breeds were overrepresented (37/50;74%). All cases were unilateral, with euryblepharon being the most common concurrent ocular abnormality (20/50;40%). Full-thickness penetrating keratoplasties (FTPK) were performed in 21/50 eyes (42%) and lamellar keratoplasties (LK) in 29/50 eyes (58%). Frozen grafts (FroG) were used in 43/50 eyes (86%) and fresh homologous grafts (FreHoG) in 7/50 (14%). Of the former group, 26 were homologous (FroHoG:60%) and 17 heterologous (FroHeG:40%). A combination of topical medication (antibiotics, corticosteroids, cycloplegics, and 0.2% cyclosporine A) and systemic mycophenolate mofetil was administered. Median follow-up time was 200 days. Postsurgical complications included wound dehiscence (6/50;12%) and glaucoma (4/50;8%). Clinical signs of graft rejection were diagnosed as follows: FroHoG (13/26;50%), FroHeG (11/17;65%), FreHoG (4/7;57%), FTPK (12/21;57%), and LK (16/29;55%). Medical treatment successfully controlled graft rejection in 11/28 eyes (39%). Good anatomical outcome was achieved in 86% (43/50), of which 95% (41/43) were visual at last examination, with moderate opacification to complete transparency of the graft present in 48.2%. Conclusions Corneal grafting is an effective surgical treatment for full-thickness corneal defects in dogs. If graft rejection is present, additional medical or surgical therapy may be necessary, achieving a highly satisfactory visual outcome.

Objective To investigate fibrinolytic activity in aqueous humor (AH) of healthy and sick dogs, with and without cataracts. Procedure Prospective observational clinical study. A total of 45 dogs were included in the study. Physical and ophthalmic examinations, complete blood cell count (CBC) and serum biochemistry panel were performed in all animals. According to the ocular and systemic diagnoses, animals were classified into three groups: sick dogs without cataracts (20 dogs; 40 eyes), diabetic dogs with cataracts (11 dogs; 22 eyes), and healthy dogs with cataracts (14 dogs; 25 eyes). Bilateral AH and blood samples were collected during intraocular surgery (25 dogs; 47 eyes), or immediately after euthanasia (20 dogs; 40 eyes). Citrated samples were centrifuged and stored at −81 °C until analysis. Plasma and AH D-dimer concentration were determined using a quantitative immunoturbidimetric latex agglutination assay. Results A total of 108 canine samples (45 plasma and 87 AH samples) were obtained. D-dimer concentration in log-scale, in AH of eyes with diabetic cataract was significantly higher than AH of eyes with nondiabetic cataract, with a difference of 0.9 ng/mL 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.2; 1.6) P = 0.0116 and higher than that of sick animals with healthy eyes, with a estimated difference of −0.89 ng/mL 95% CI (−1.52; −0.25) P = 0.0061. Plasma D-dimer concentration was significantly higher in the group of animals with systemic disease [median 606 ng/mL, Interquartil Range (IQR) 145–1956 ng/mL] than in healthy dogs (median 47.5 ng/mL, IQR 4–250 ng/mL) (P = 0.002) and diabetic dogs (median 60.5 ng/mL, IQR 0–147.5 ng/mL) (P

Case description: An 11-year-old Arabian mare was presented for investigation of a visible, pale-colored intraocular mass in the right eye. Clinical findings: An intraocular mass was detected clinically and ultrasonographically as originating from the superior temporal quadrant of the ciliary body and iris and causing secondary glaucoma. The echodense mass was occupying the majority of the vitreous chamber and extended into the anterior chamber. The left eye appeared normal. Treatment and Outcome: Enucleation was recommended for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. No adjuvant treatment was given. Histopathological examination demonstrated a benign intraocular teratoid medulloepithelioma located at the ciliary body. Immunohistochemical studies showed that neoplastic cells were positive for vimentin, S-100 protein, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), and nestin and negative for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Electron microscopy revealed abundant cellular matrix and blood vessels surrounding tumor cells, which had indented, round to oval nuclei. There were also apoptotic bodies and cells containing melanosomes of variable shape and size. Eight years later, the horse has had no recurrence and maintains normal vision in the left eye. Clinical relevance: This is the first report of a benign teratoid intraocular medulloepithelioma in an adult horse and the ultrastructural and immunohistochemical characterization of a teratoid medulloepithelioma in this species.

Purpose To describe the pre-surgical, surgical, and post-surgical considerations for phacoemulsification in non-human primates. Methods Records of non-human primates that underwent phacoemulsification by the Ophthalmology Services of FHCV-UAB and HCV-UM, between 2003 and 2009 were reviewed. Results Five primates were represented: one gorilla, one chimpanzee, one pygmy marmoset, one orangutan, and one chacma baboon. Three were males and two females, of a median age of 16.8 years. Four primates presented bilateral cataracts and one unilateral (n = 9 eyes). Cataracts were immature in two eyes, mature in four and hypermature in 3. One-handed phacoemulsification was used in seven eyes and a two-handed technique in 2. Intraocular lenses (IOLs), with optic powers between +19.0 and +21.5D, were implanted in the four large-sized primates. All the primates were more active and social after the surgery. Conclusion Phacoemulsification in non-human primates is highly successful and associated with an overall good visual outcome. Nevertheless, specific considerations should be applied in these species.

Objective The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy, outcome, and complications following penetrating sclerokeratoplasty and frozen homologous corneoscleral grafting for the management of extensive canine epibulbar melanocytomas. Methods Medical records of canine patients treated at three different veterinary hospitals between 1999 and 2010 were reviewed. Signalment, location and extent of melanocytomas, recurrence rate, and early and late complications were reported. Patients were re-examined postoperatively to provide follow-up information. Results Patients included one intact male, three castrated males, six intact females, and one spayed female, with a median age of 5 years (range, 3–9). German Shepherds were overrepresented. Tumors extended from 2 to 4 clock hours at the limbus and up to 17 mm from clear cornea to globe equator. One case showed iridocorneal angle invasion; corneal involvement was present in all cases, and lipid keratopathy was present in four cases. In two cases, there was incomplete resection owing to tumor extent. Follow-up time ranged from 3 to 72 months (median, 17 months), with one case of intraocular tumor progression. Early complications included anterior uveitis (11/11), intracameral fibrin (5/11), hyphema (4/11), corneal edema (4/11), exuberant corneal granulation tissue (2/11), focal retinal edema (1/11), dyscoria (1/11), and partial suture dehiscence (1/11). Late complications included corneal fibrosis and/or pigmentation (11/11), faint anterior cortical cataracts (3/11), and lipid keratopathy (1/11). Vision was retained in all cases. Conclusions This technique offers a surgically challenging but effective treatment for extensive epibulbar melanocytomas. In this case series, complications were mild and transient, with preservation of ocular anatomy and function.

Purpose Canine lymphoma (CL) is one of the most common forms of spontaneous canine neoplasia. Improved understanding of the genetic and environmental factors associated with CL may provide benefits for the study of non-Hodgkin’s and Hodgkin’s lymphoma in humans. Uveodermatologic lymphoma is reported in a single household of Portuguese water dog, and the etiology is discussed. Methods A 1-year-old female intact Portuguese water dog was referred to the Ophthalmology Service of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the Autonomous University of Barcelona because of acute blepharospasm of the right eye in association with a multinodular dermatosis. Physical and ophthalmological examination and a complete diagnostic work-up, including skin and ocular histopathology and immunohistochemistry, were performed. Three months prior, in Galicia (Spain), 1200 km away from Barcelona, a male dog of the same litter showed very similar oculodermatological clinical signs and skin histopathology, and immunohistochemistry were obtained. Results The clinical diagnoses were anterior exudative uveitis, iridal masses, and secondary glaucoma. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry revealed a nonepitheliotropic lymphoma rich in B cell in dog 1 and rich in T cell in dog 2. Conclusion It is proposed that an underlying genetic predisposition could have played a role in the development of lymphoma in these two young related dogs.

Objective To determine the type, prevalence, and prognosis of ocular and periocular lesions in free-living little owls (LO) and scops owls (SO), injured by blunt trauma. Procedures Medical records from LO and SO with ocular or periocular lesions secondary to blunt trauma were reviewed. A complete ophthalmic examination was performed in all birds. Short protocol electroretinography (ERG) and ocular ultrasound were performed as dictated by the case. Results During the study period, a total of 158 LO and 99 SO with blunt trauma were admitted. Among these, 43 LO (27.8%) and 27 SO (27.3%) had ocular or periocular lesions. Bilateral injuries (72.1% LO and 81.5% SO) were more common than unilateral. Common findings in both species were: corneal erosions/superficial ulcers, anterior and posterior uveitis, cataracts, hyphema, posterior synechia, vitreal hemorrhage, and retinal detachment. Electroretinography was performed in 32 LO and eight SO, which had posterior segment lesions or opacity of the transparent media. Normal to nonrecordable b-wave amplitudes were observed. Follow-up was available in 13 LO and 11 SO. Among these, nine LO (14 eyes) and 10 SO (17 eyes) had resolution of the clinical signs following medical treatment. Conclusions Ocular lesions are common in LO and SO injured by blunt trauma. Electroretinography is a valuable diagnostic tool to assess the severity of retinal dysfunction secondary to blunt trauma and to determine the response to medical treatment. A complete ophthalmic examination is a determining factor in the early management of trauma in these species.

Bilateral exudative chorioretinitis was diagnosed in an 18-month-old male neutered ferret (Mustela putorius furo) with a generalized Cryptococcus gattii infection confirmed by PCR. The animal was referred to the Ophthalmology Service of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (VTH-UAB) for acute onset blindness. Complete ophthalmic examination revealed absent menace response and dazzle reflex in both eyes (OU), as well as subretinal edema located in the tapetal fundus. At that time, the clinical ophthalmologic diagnosis was bilateral exudative chorioretinitis. Treatment with prednisone (0.5 mg/kg PO q24 h) was instituted in addition to the ongoing treatment with fluconazole (10 mg/kg PO q24 h). The following rechecks revealed secondary cataracts with subsequent lens subluxation and panretinal degeneration OU. Despite being blind and the poor prognosis of disseminate cryptococcosis, the patient remained active and in good body condition during 6 months after the initial diagnosis. At that time, the ferret showed ataxia, incontinence, and generalized pain. A magnetic resonance imaging study revealed a mass affecting the spine. The owners declined further investigations and the ferret was humanely euthanized. The postmortem histopathology confirmed the initial diagnosis of cryptococcosis and the presence of intraretinal Cryptococcus spp. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of Cryptococcus spp. induced exudative chorioretinitis in a ferret.

Summary The aim of this prospective observational clinical study was to carry out a descriptive ophthalmic investigation in healthy newborn foals for the establishment of normal ocular anomalies found during the whole neonatal period. To date there have been no studies specifically addressing the normal ocular findings and variations of the eye and adnexa in foals during the neonatal period. Knowledge of the ocular characteristics at this early age will help equine practitioners to better identify ocular abnormalities. A detailed ophthalmic examination was performed by boarded ophthalmologists on all admitted healthy newborn foals. There were 52 foals included in the study grouped into those that were 1-day-old, younger than 5 days, aged 6–15 days and 16–21 days. Menace response was found to be absent in foals younger than 15 days. Pupillary light reflexes were present in all foals but were slower and incomplete in 14/14 1-day-old foals (100%) and in 7/21 foals aged 2–5 days (33%). Palpebral reflexes were positive in all foals. Ventromedial strabismus was bilaterally present in 8/14 1-day-old foals (57%) and in 4/21 foals aged 2–5 days (19%). Conjunctival congestion was observed in all groups. Conjunctival haemorrhages, perilimbal vascular ring, lens suture opacities and multifocal tapetal haemorrhages were exclusive findings from 1-day-old foals, with an incidence of 36, 21, 36 and 29%, respectively. The means of IOP readings were similar in all age groups. Hyaloid artery remnant and optic nerve head congestion were present in all 1-day-old foals (100%), decreasing in incidence with age. Ocular findings in new neonates are different from those observed in older neonates and should be considered when examining the foal's eye. Findings described in this study will help equine practitioners to more accurately diagnose discrete or unusual pathological changes in the newborn foal's eye according to their age.

A 10 year-old, spayed female Domestic Short-Haired (DSH) cat was diagnosed with a large primary uveal melanoma and exenteration was recommended. Thoracic radiographs, abdominal ultrasonography, and complete blood count and serum biochemistry panel did not reveal any abnormality compatible with metastatic disease and surgery was performed. Histopathologic study of the eye confirmed a diffuse iris melanoma. Five months later, the cat presented with a lameness of the right anterior extremity. On physical exam the right elbow was swollen and painful. Radiographs showed a severe osteolysis of the radial head and proximal diaphysis. Fine needle aspiration of the radius head identified a round cell neoplasm with scattered cells containing intracytoplasmatic pigmented granules, compatible with metastatic melanoma. The owners decided not to treat the patient with chemotherapy and declined a biopsy. Two months later, the cat died and necropsy was performed confirming bone metastasis of the uveal melanoma. A diagnosis of generalized metastasis from primary diffuse iris melanoma was made. This report describes, for the first time, long bone metastasis from an uveal melanoma in a cat.

Aim: The study of neurological soft signs (NSS) in patients with Asperger syndrome may help us to elucidate the neurological basis of this disorder and to clarify its relationship with other neurodevelopmental disorders. The goal of this study was to compare the prevalence of NSS in a sample of patients with Asperger syndrome, early-onset psychosis and healthy controls. Method: NSS were assessed by means of the Neurological Evaluation Scale in a sample of 29 patients with Asperger syndrome (mean age = 12.86 ± 2.58 years), 30 patients with first-episode early-onset psychoses (mean age 14.17 ± 1.02 years) and 30 healthy controls (mean age 12.33 ± 2.69 years). Results: Significant group differences were found between Asperger syndrome patients and healthy controls both in all the Neurological Evaluation Scale subscales and in the Neurological Evaluation Scale total score. There were no significant differences between both groups of patients in any of the Neurological Evaluation Scale scores. Conclusions: NSS are more prevalent in Asperger syndrome than in healthy controls. The NSS profile was not disorder-specific in our samples of patients with Asperger syndrome and early-onset psychoses.

Objective To describe the ophthalmologic, neurologic, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of seven animals with acute postretinal blindness as sole neurologic deficit. Methods Medical records were reviewed to identify dogs and cats with postretinal blindness of acute presentation, that had a cranial MRI performed as part of the diagnostic workup. Only animals lacking other neurologic signs at presentation were included. Complete physical, ophthalmic, and neurologic examinations, routine laboratory evaluations, thoracic radiographs, abdominal ultrasound, electroretinography, and brain MRI were performed in all animals. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis and postmortem histopathologic results were recorded when available. Results Four dogs and three cats met the inclusion criteria. Lesions affecting the visual pathways were observed on magnetic resonance (MR) images in six cases. Location, extension, and MRI features were described. Neuroanatomic localization included: olfactory region with involvement of the optic chiasm (n = 4), pituitary fossa with involvement of the optic chiasm and optic tracts (n = 1), and optic nerves (n = 1). Of all lesions detected, five were consistent with intracranial tumors (two meningiomas, one pituitary tumor, two nasal tumors with intracranial extension), and one with bilateral optic neuritis that was confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid analysis. Histologic diagnosis was obtained in four cases and included one meningioma, one pituitary carcinoma, one nasal osteosarcoma, and one nasal carcinoma. Conclusions Central nervous system (CNS) disease should be considered in dogs and cats with acute blindness, even when other neurologic deficits are absent. This study emphasizes the relevance of MRI as a diagnostic tool for detection and characterization of CNS lesions affecting the visual pathways.

Objective Canine leishmaniosis is a disease characterized by the wide distribution of the parasite throughout the tissues of the host. The purpose of this study was to describe the presence of Leishmania spp. and associated inflammation in ocular-associated muscles of dogs with patent leishmaniosis. Procedures Smooth muscles (iris dilator muscle, iris sphincter muscle, ciliary muscle, Muller muscle, smooth muscle of the periorbita and smooth muscle of the nictitating membrane) and striated muscles (orbicularis oculi muscle, obliquus dorsalis muscle and dorsal rectus muscle) were evaluated. Routine staining with hematoxylin and eosin and immunohistochemistry to detect Leishmania spp. were performed on tissue sections. Results Granulomatous inflammation was seen surrounding muscular fibers and was composed mainly of macrophages with scattered lymphocytes and plasma cells. This infiltrate could be seen in 52/473 (10.99%) samples of smooth muscle and 36/142 (25.35%) samples of striated muscle. Parasites were detected in 43/473 (9.09%) samples of smooth muscle and in 28/142 (19.71%) samples of striated muscle. Conclusions To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report assessing the presence of Leishmania spp. and associated infiltrate in intraocular, extraocular and adnexal smooth and striated muscles. The inflammation present in those muscles could contribute to clinical signs already described, such as blepharitis, uveitis, and orbital cellulitis.

Background: Septicemia in humans is described as a leading cause of uveitis, which eventually can induce blindness. Hypothesis/Objectives: Uveal inflammatory findings could be related to sepsis severity in newborn foals and might be used as an indirect indicator for survival. Animals: Seventy-four septic foals, 54 nonseptic foals, and 42 healthy foals. Methods: Prospective observational clinical study. A detailed blinded, ophthalmic examination was performed by boarded ophthalmologists on all admitted newborn foals. Foals were grouped as septic (when blood culture resulted positive or the sepsis score was ≥14), nonseptic, and controls. Based on blood culture results, the septic group was subdivided into bacteremic and nonbacteremic foals. Results: Blood culture was performed in 62/74 septic foals, from which 35 (56%) were bacteremic and 27 (44%) were nonbacteremic. Anterior uveitis was diagnosed in a significantly (P < .005) higher number of septic/bacteremic foals (14/35, 40%) than in septic/nonbacteremic foals (5/27, 19%), nonseptic foals (4/54, 7%), and control foals (0%). Anterior chamber fibrin was only observed in 4/14 (29%) septic/bacteremic foals with anterior uveitis. Anterior uveitis was also associated with posterior uveitis in 6/35 (19%) septic/bacteremic foals. The diagnosis of uveitis was related to nonsurvival (P= .001, odds ratio = 6.2, 95% confidence interval = 2.1–18.2). Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Anterior uveitis is highly prevalent in septic newborn foals, especially in those with a positive blood culture, and it should be considered as a survival prognostic factor.

This investigation sought to identify the presence of immune cells in normal canine corneal epithelium. A whole-mount immunofluorescence study of normal canine epithelium using monoclonal antibodies against CD45, CD11c, CD1c and MHC class II was performed. CD45-positive cells were located in all epithelial layers throughout the cornea, occurring in greater numbers (51.98+/-4.1/mm(2)) at the periphery and decreasing towards the central region (11.8+/-3.1/mm(2)). CD11c-positive cells were also observed, but were fewer in number. The findings show that the normal canine cornea carries a significant number of cells of immune origin; these cells seem to be of an inactive phenotype as they do not express MHC class II. Further studies are needed to determine whether these cells can express co-stimulatory molecules and act as antigen presenting cells if stimulated.
