Introduction: Creatine is a naturally occurring compound vital for energy metabolism, particularly in high-energy-demand tissues like muscles and the brain. Traditionally, research on creatine has focused on its ergogenic effects in sports, but emerging research suggests it may also positively impact brain health. Studies are exploring creatine monohydrate's role in improving cognitive function, mitigating neurodegenerative processes, and supporting mental health. This dual functionality highlights the compound's versatility as both a performance enhancer and a potential therapeutic agent for neurological health. By expanding the scope of creatine research beyond physical performance, we can better understand and utilize its full capabilities to enhance human health. This research review examines the growing evidence suggesting that creatine supplementation could significantly benefit brain health and the management of neurological diseases. Aim of the study: This review aims to synthesize current findings on creatine's cognitive benefits and its therapeutic potential for neurological disorders, critically analyzing preclinical and clinical studies to identify gaps and suggest future research directions. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar databases, covering studies published between 2000 and 2024. Keywords such as creatine supplementation, brain health and neurodegeneration were used. Exclusion criteria included non-peer-reviewed articles, studies with insufficient data, and those not in English. Conclusions: This review highlights the potential benefits of creatine supplementation for cognitive and neurodegenerative diseases, noting its positive effects on memory, alleviating depression and anxiety, and offering neuroprotection. Future research should aim to standardize dosing, extend follow-up periods, and include larger, more diverse populations.

Injuries in combat sports can happen to any athlete, regardless of gender, age, training experience or whether he or she is an amateur or a professional. The range of injuries varies from superficial, short-term damage to severe injuries with serious consequences, including death. There are many types of combat sports, each with different rules and specific injuries. Amongst various divisions of combat sports, one of the basic ones is the division into ground and stand-up sports. In the following work, using the available literature, we wanted to present the specifications of several of the most popular combat sports and compare their most common locations of injuries, types of injuries and mechanisms of their formation, paying attention to which of these categories a given sport belongs to. We also discuss differences in the rate of injury for different age, genders, prevalence of injuries during situations of practice and competition. In the end, it is presented what are the possible long-term complications of injuries in combat sports and which actions such as protective gear, bans on certain techniques or behavioural changes might reduce the injury rate to protect the athletes health, well-being and decrease the economic burden on healthcare systems.

In recent years, the popularity of drugs which were firstly introduced as treatment for diabetes type 2 has surged, because of their’s significant effect of managing the body weight especially for patients that suffer for diabetes type 2. Tirzepatide is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Semaglutide is a glucagon-like-peptide 1 receptor agonist. The aim of our study is to present reliable and up-to-date knowledge of effects that both drugs provide and their beneficial effects on health.

The Valsalva maneuver, named after Antonio Maria Valsalva, is one of the vagal maneuvers. It is defined as a forced expiration against a closed glottis, leading to an increase in intrathoracic and intra-abdominal pressure. Over the years it has become a subject of interest to many clinical researchers who have comprehensively studied its physiology and clinical significance. As a result, the application of the Valsalva maneuver has expanded to become a versatile technique applied across a wide range of medical specialties as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool. Additionally, it has found its use in sport among athletes. The aim of this article is to present the current state of knowledge about the clinical significance of the Valsalva maneuver and show that this simple physiological technique described in the 18th century remains a valuable tool in modern clinical practice and has found its use in sport. The review was based on chosen literature obtained from the PubMed electronic database, Google Scholar electronic database, and other scientific articles. Search terms included keywords listed below. Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental illness that affects multiple areas of life. Patients with schizophrenia are prone to developing serious and even fatal disorders when it comes to their physical health. They have a higher mortality risk and an average of 14,5 years of potential life lost compared to the general population. Physical activity decreases mortality, reduces cardiovascular risk, and improves mental health. Within this article, we explore the topic of physical activity and its influence on the physical and mental health of schizophrenia patients and their treatment.

A taxonomic synopsis of the orchid genus Habenaria in New Guinea and adjacent islands is presented. We confirmed the occurrence of 27 Habenaria species in study area. Sixteen of these are endemic and were not so far found outside New Guinea. Morphological characteristics and illustrations of floral segments of taxa are presented. One new species of Habenaria is described. Four neotypes are selected. An updated key to species groups and species occurring in the study area is provided. The importance of diagnostic floral characters in Habenaria is discussed.

The location of possible glacial refugia of six Apostasioideae representatives is estimated based on ecological niche modeling analysis. The distribution of their suitable niches during the last glacial maximum (LGM) is compared with their current potential and documented geographical ranges. The climatic factors limiting the studied species occurrences are evaluated and the niche overlap between the studied orchids is assessed and discussed. The predicted niche occupancy profiles and reconstruction of ancestral climatic tolerances suggest high level of phylogenetic niche conservatism within Apostasioideae.

Statystyki czytelnictwa dotyczące tradycyjnie rozumianej literatury od dawna utrzymują się na niskim poziomie, jednak stale wzrastają w obrębie fanfiction. Sami czytelnicy fikcji fanowskiej rozumieją i traktują czytane przez siebie teksty tak jak literaturę, zaś w obrębie fandomu wykształcają się zjawiska typowe dla wydarzeń okołoliterackich. Tekst artykułu został oparty na ankiecie i wywiadach przeprowadzonych wśród anglojęzycznych członków różnych fandomów, ukazujących przemiany sposobu rozumienia i dyskutowania na temat literatury.

Saponin surfactants extracted from plants have significant potential applications in many industries. The interfacial properties of extracts of Alphitonia excelsa, a native Australian plant rich in saponins, have been characterised to assess their suitability as dual-purpose foaming and antibacterial additives. Two sources of the plant (Adelaide Botanic Gardens and homelands of Chuulangun Aboriginal Corporation) were investigated to look for alteration of properties as a result of differences in cultivation and geographic location. Two methods of saponin extraction (water and water/ethanol mixtures) were investigated to determine differences in extraction efficiency and performance. Distinct differences were observed between the traditional analytical analysis (for saponin content) of the extracts based on source and extraction method; however, these differences were not as stark when considering the effect of the extracts on air–water interfacial tension and dilatational rheology, with extraction method proving to be the single biggest factor in extract efficacy. The data obtained point toward the presence of an altered array of surface-active species (different relative amounts of particular saponins in the water/ethanol extracted material) as a function of the extraction method. All extracts presented some antibacterial effect, albeit modest. This work highlights that the extraction method needs to be carefully considered and tailored for a given application.

BackgroundIndividuals of South Asian origin are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) compared with other ethnic minority groups. Therefore, there is a need to develop interventions to address, and reduce, this heightened risk. ObjectiveWe undertook formative work to develop a culturally adapted diet and physical activity text message intervention to prevent T2DM for women of Pakistani origin living in Scotland. MethodsWe used a stepwise approach that was informed by the Six Steps in Quality Intervention Development framework, which consisted of gathering evidence through literature review and focus groups (step 1), developing a program theory for the intervention (step 2), and finally developing the content of the text messages and an accompanying delivery plan (step 3). ResultsIn step 1, we reviewed 12 articles and identified 3 key themes describing factors impacting on diet and physical activity in the context of T2DM prevention: knowledge on ways to prevent T2DM through diet and physical activity; cultural, social, and gender norms; and perceived level of control and sense of inevitability over developing T2DM. The key themes that emerged from the 3 focus groups with a total of 25 women were the need for interventions to provide “friendly encouragement,” “companionship,” and a “focus on the individual” and also for the text messages to “set achievable goals” and include “information on cooking healthy meals.” We combined the findings of the focus groups and literature review to create 13 guiding principles for culturally adapting the text messages. In step 2, we developed a program theory, which specified the main determinants of change that our text messages should aim to enhance: knowledge and skills, sense of control, goal setting and planning behavior, peer support, and norms and beliefs guiding behavior. In step 3, we used both the intervention program theory and guiding principles to develop a set of 73 text messages aimed at supporting a healthy diet and 65 text messages supporting increasing physical activity. ConclusionsWe present a theory-based approach to develop a culturally adapted diet and physical activity text message intervention to prevent T2DM for women of Pakistani origin living in Scotland. This study outlines an approach that may also be applicable to the development of interventions for other ethnic minority populations in diverse settings. There is now a need to build on this formative work and undertake a feasibility trial of a text message–based diet and physical activity intervention to prevent T2DM for women of Pakistani origin living in Scotland.

To grupa podejść metodologiczno-teoretycznych i praktycznych, uznawanych nie tylko za innowacyjne, wartościowe i skuteczne ale też konieczne do zastosowania we współczesnej edukacji. I chociaż różnojęzyczność funkcjonuje w polskim systemie w placówkach dwujęzycznych i międzynarodowych, w formie koncepcji dydaktycznych, programów lub rozwiązań metodycznych, autorka dostrzega potrzebę jej szerszego wykorzystania, implementację do codziennej praktyki szkolnej, w obecnych czasach , gdy każde dziecko jest w procesie dochodzenia do określonego poziomu dwujęzyczności a każdy nauczyciel jest nauczycielem języka. W artykule przedstawiono najważniejsze podejścia: prulilingualism, translanguanging i language awareness, które są stosowane w codziennej praktyce językowej rodzin i społeczności wielojęzycznych oraz mają zastosowanie w różnojęzycznych grupach, klasach, w pracy z dziećmi z doświadczeniem migracji.

The aim of the article: The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic made it necessary to involve the state in the process of rescuing numerous business entities from bankruptcy. In the European Union, the aid measure for entrepreneurs takes a form of public aid, which, as it turns out, is the necessary and the only tool to protect SME sector enterprises against bankruptcy. Social isolation caused by the virus that spread on a large scale effectively inhibited the development of entrepreneurship, which is inherently related to the economic development of countries. The aim of the article is therefore to indicate that supporting entrepreneurs within the framework of public aid may help to reverse the unfavorable economic trends related to the disturbed development of entrepreneurship. Methodology: The article analyzes and assesses the government solutions introduced to the Polish economic reality, the purpose of which is to counteract the effects of Covid-19. The paper presents the current public aid tools available to entrepreneurs along with their financial dimension. Results of the research: State aid granted by the state to entrepreneurs during the crisis caused by Covid-19 is indispensable for their further functioning. The paper presents aid instruments related to COVID-19 that are available to entrepreneurs. The analysis shows that public aid addressed to entrepreneurs injured as a result of the lockdown comes from many sources and is almost tailored to the individual entrepreneur. The entities providing aid on the basis of state aid include: banks, local government units, executive bodies of local government units, Social Insurance Fund, State Fund for Rehabilitation of Disabled People, financial intermediaries, bodies constituting local government units, the European Investment Bank, Polish Development Fund, district and voivodeship labor offices and BGK (Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego). Having prepared a package of systemic solutions, the government introduced them systematically, depending on the situation of individual sectors of the economy. Special solutions in the form of financial shields were addressed directly to the tourism sector (e.g. loans for tour operators) or the catering sector, which in the face of the pandemic were most exposed to a decrease in revenues. The impact of introduced solutions on the country’s economy can be assessed only in the next few years, but the multitude and diversified nature of the anti-crisis solutions introduced in Poland will certainly contribute to slowing down the negative consequences of Covid-19 in the economy.

While it is now well appreciated that the extracellular matrix (ECM) exerts biomechanical cues that direct critical cellular behavior, including cell proliferation, differentiation, migration, and survival, the molecular mechanisms underlying these cues remain mysterious. It has long been known that the ECM is also a source of biochemical cues that influence these processes, but the way these interact with ECM biomechanics also remains largely unknown. The systematic study of these relationships has been hampered by a paucity of models and the tools to interrogate them. Studies of complex models and tissue samples employing techniques such as atomic force microscopy (AFM) have informed much of our current understanding of how mechanical cues are transduced by the ECM and how cells respond to them. However, key observations made using such complex systems cannot be reliably assigned to the ECM or its components without a precise understanding of how these components respond to and exert mechanical force at the nanoscale – the scale at which individual cells respond. To address this knowledge gap, we used AFM to study the nanomechanical properties of a simple model, consisting only of type I collagen, the most abundant component of the ECM. Intriguingly, our data show bimodal distribution that is entirely attributable to type I collagen, greatly simplifying the interpretation of these studies. Furthermore, we examined the nanomechanical influence of tissue fixation by protein cross-linking, an approach commonly used in research and medical histopathology, revealing a significant and non-uniform distortion of the nanomechanical profile of fixed samples, which has the potential to introduce artifacts into the nanomechanical characterization of tissues. In contrast to the clear observation of mechanical differences induced by cross-linking, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed only subtle alterations to the chemical signature of the collagen, highlighting the importance of nanomechanical approaches for the complete characterization of model systems and tissues.

Abstract An antimicrobial peptide, nisin Z, was embedded within polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) composed of natural polysaccharides in order to explore the potential of forming a multilayer with antimicrobial properties. Using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FTIR), the formation of carrageenan/chitosan multilayers and the inclusion of nisin Z in two different configurations was investigated. Approximately 0.89 µg cm−2 nisin Z was contained within a 4.5 bilayer film. The antimicrobial properties of these films were also investigated. The peptide containing films were able to kill over 90% and 99% of planktonic and biofilm cells, respectively, against Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains compared to control films. Additionally, surface topography and wettability studies using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and the captive bubble technique revealed that surface roughness and hydrophobicity was similar for both nisin containing multilayers. This suggests that the antimicrobial efficacy of the peptide is unaffected by its location within the multilayer. Overall, these results demonstrate the potential to embed and protect natural antimicrobials within a multilayer to create functionalised coatings that may be desired by industry, such as in the food, biomaterials, and pharmaceutical industry sectors.

Abstract Background Attempts to achieve digital transformation across the health service have stimulated increasingly large-scale and more complex change programmes. These encompass a growing range of functions in multiple locations across the system and may take place over extended timeframes. This calls for new approaches to evaluate these programmes. Main body Drawing on over a decade of conducting formative and summative evaluations of health information technologies, we here build on previous work detailing evaluation challenges and ways to tackle these. Important considerations include changing organisational, economic, political, vendor and markets necessitating tracing of evolving networks, relationships, and processes; exploring mechanisms of spread; and studying selected settings in depth to understand local tensions and priorities. Conclusions Decision-makers need to recognise that formative evaluations, if built on solid theoretical and methodological foundations, can help to mitigate risks and help to ensure that programmes have maximum chances of success.

Celem artykułu jest prezentacja autotematycznych wypowiedzi na temat pisania wybranych polskich pisarzy, autorów poradników oraz pedagogów. Te propozycje i zaprezentowane obrazy są w istocie reprezentacjami kulturowymi pisarstwa. Na koniec opracowania przywołano futurystyczne wizje Jacka Dukaja. Uznano bowiem, że epoka postpiśmienna, w której obecnie żyjemy, stanowi ważny kontekst współczesnego i przyszłego pisarstwa akademickiego.

BackgroundThe English Global Digital Exemplar (GDE) program is one of the first concerted efforts to create a digital health learning ecosystem across a national health service. ObjectiveThis study aims to explore mechanisms that support or inhibit the exchange of interorganizational digital transformation knowledge. MethodsWe conducted a formative qualitative evaluation of the GDE program. We used semistructured interviews with clinical, technical, and managerial staff; national program managers and network leaders; nonparticipant observations of knowledge transfer activities through attending meetings, workshops, and conferences; and documentary analysis of policy documents. The data were thematically analyzed by drawing on a theory-informed sociotechnical coding framework. We used a mixture of deductive and inductive methods, supported by NVivo software, to facilitate coding. ResultsWe conducted 341 one-on-one and 116 group interviews, observed 86 meetings, and analyzed 245 documents from 36 participating provider organizations. We also conducted 51 high-level interviews with policy makers and vendors; performed 77 observations of national meetings, workshops, and conferences; and analyzed 80 national documents. Formal processes put in place by the GDE program to initiate and reinforce knowledge transfer and learning have accelerated the growth of informal knowledge networking and helped establish the foundations of a learning ecosystem. However, formal networks were most effective when supported by informal networking. The benefits of networking were enhanced (and costs reduced) by geographical proximity, shared culture and context, common technological functionality, regional and strategic alignments, and professional agendas. ConclusionsKnowledge exchange is most effective when sustained through informal networking driven by the mutual benefits of sharing knowledge and convergence between group members in their organizational and technological setting and goals. Policy interventions need to enhance incentives and reduce barriers to sharing across the ecosystem, be flexible in tailoring formal interventions to emerging needs, and promote informal knowledge sharing.

Background There is currently a strong drive internationally towards creating digitally advanced healthcare systems through coordinated efforts at a national level. The English Global Digital Exemplar (GDE) programme is a large-scale national health information technology change programme aiming to promote digitally-enabled transformation in secondary healthcare provider organisations by supporting relatively digitally mature provider organisations to become international centres of excellence.Aim To qualitatively evaluate the impact of the GDE programme in promoting digital transformation in provider organisations that took part in the programme.Methods We conducted a series of in-depth case studies in 12 purposively selected provider organisations and a further 24 wider case studies of the remaining organisations participating in the GDE programme. Data collected included 628 interviews, non-participant observations of 190 meetings and workshops and analysis of 9 documents. We used thematic analysis aided by NVivo software and drew on sociotechnical theory to analyse the data.Results We found the GDE programme accelerated digital transformation within participating provider organisations. This acceleration was triggered by: (1) dedicated funding and the associated requirement for matched internal funding, which in turn helped to prioritise digital transformation locally; (2) governance requirements put in place by the programme that helped strengthen existing local governance and project management structures and supported the emergence of a cadre of clinical health informatics leaders locally; and (3) reputational benefits associated with being recognised as a centre of digital excellence, which facilitated organisational buy-in for digital transformation and increased negotiating power with vendors.Conclusion The GDE programme has been successful in accelerating digital transformation in participating provider organisations. Large-scale digital transformation programmes in healthcare can stimulate local progress through protected funding, putting in place governance structures and leveraging reputational benefits for participating provider organisations, around a coherent vision of transformation.

Background The Global Digital Exemplar (GDE) Programme was designed to promote the digitisation of hospital services in England. Selected provider organisations that were reasonably digitally-mature were funded with the expectation that they would achieve internationally recognised levels of excellence and act as exemplars (‘GDE sites’) and share their learning with somewhat less digitally-mature Fast Follower (FF) sites. Aims This paper explores how partnerships between GDE and FF sites have promoted knowledge sharing and learning between organisations. Methods We conducted an independent qualitative longitudinal evaluation of the GDE Programme, collecting data across 36 provider organisations (including acute, mental health and speciality), 12 of which we studied as in-depth ethnographic case studies. We used a combination of semi-structured interviews with programme leads, vendors and national policy leads, non-participant observations of meetings and workshops, and analysed national and local documents. This allowed us to explore both how inter-organisational learning and knowledge sharing was planned, and how it played out in practice. Thematic qualitative analysis, combining findings from diverse data sources, was facilitated by NVivo 11 and drew on sociotechnical systems theory. Results Formally established GDE and FF partnerships were perceived to enhance learning and accelerate adoption of technologies in most pairings. They were seen to be most successful where they had encouraged, and were supported by, informal knowledge networking, driven by the mutual benefits of information sharing. Informal networking was enhanced where the benefits were maximised (for example where paired sites had implemented the same technological system) and networking costs minimised (for example by geographical proximity, prior links and institutional alignment). Although the intervention anticipated uni-directional learning between exemplar sites and ‘followers’, in most cases we observed a two-way flow of information, with GDEs also learning from FFs, through informal networking which also extended to other health service providers outside the Programme. The efforts of the GDE Programme to establish a learning ecosystem has enhanced the profile of shared learning within the NHS. Conclusions Inter-organisational partnerships have produced significant gains for both follower (FF) and exemplar (GDE) sites. Formal linkages were most effective where they had facilitated, and were supported by, informal networking. Informal networking was driven by the mutual benefits of information sharing and was optimised where sites were well aligned in terms of technology, geography and culture. Misalignments that created barriers to networking between organisations in a few cases were attributed to inappropriate choice of partners. Policy makers seeking to promote learning through centrally directed mechanisms need to create a framework that enables networking and informal knowledge transfer, allowing local organisations to develop bottom-up collaboration and exchanges, where they are productive, in an organic manner.

Introduction Many countries are launching large-scale, digitally enabled change programmes as part of efforts to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of care. We have been commissioned to conduct an independent evaluation of a major national change programme, the Global Digital Exemplar (GDE) Programme, which aims to develop exemplary digital health solutions and encourage their wider adoption by creating a learning ecosystem across English National Health Service (NHS) provider organisations.Methods and analysis This theoretically informed, qualitative, longitudinal formative evaluation comprises five inter-related work packages. We will conduct a combination of 12 in-depth and 24 broader qualitative case studies in GDE sites exploring digital transformation, local learning and mechanisms of spread of knowledge within the Programme and across the wider NHS. Data will be collected through a combination of semistructured interviews with managers, implementation staff (clinical and non-clinical), vendors and policymakers, plus non-participant observations of meetings, site visits, workshops and documentary analysis of strategic local and national plans. Data will be analysed through inductive and deductive methods, beginning with in-depth case study sites and testing the findings against data from the wider sample and national stakeholders.Ethics and dissemination This work is commissioned as part of a national change programme and is therefore a service evaluation. We have ethical approval from the University of Edinburgh. Results will be disseminated at six monthly intervals to national policymakers, and made available via our publicly accessible website. We will also identify lessons for the management and evaluation of large-scale evolving digital health change programmes that are of international relevance.

The variability in clinical trial results on memantine treatment of Alzheimer’s disease remains incompletely explained. The aim of this in silico study is a virtual memantine therapy for Alzheimer’s disease that provides a different perspective on clinical trials; An in silico randomised trial using virtual hippocampi to treat moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease with doses of memantine 3–30 µM compared to placebo. The primary endpoint was the number of impulses (spikes). Secondary endpoints included interspike interval and frequency; The number of virtual moderate-AD hippocampal spikes was significantly lower, at 1648.7 (95% CI, 1344.5–1952.9), versus those treated with the 3 µM dose, 2324.7 (95% CI, 2045.9–2603.5), and the 10 µM dose, 3607.0 (95% CI, 3137.6–4076.4). In contrast, the number of virtual spikes (spikes) of severe AD of the hippocampus was significantly lower, at 1461.8 (95% CI, 1196.2–1727.4), versus those treated with the 10 µM dose, at 2734.5 (95% CI, 2369.8–3099.2), and the 30 µM dose, at 3748.9 (95% CI, 3219.8–4278.0). The results of the analysis of secondary endpoints, interspike intervals and frequencies changed statistically significantly relative to the placebo; The results of the in silico study confirm that memantine monotherapy is effective in the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease, as assessed by various neuronal parameters.

Water-in-oil-in-water (W1/O/W2) emulsions (double emulsions) have often been used for the encapsulation of bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins. Instability of both anthocyanins and double emulsions creates a need for a tailored composition of the aqueous phase. In this work, double emulsions with a gelled internal water phase were produced and monitored over a 20-day storage period. The effect of the electrolyte phase composition (varying electrolyte components, including adipic acid, citric acid, and varying concentration of potassium chloride (KCl)) on anthocyanin and double emulsion stability was analysed using colour analysis, droplet sizing, and emulsion rheology. The effect of electrolytes on colour retention was shown to differ between the primary W1/O emulsion and the secondary W1/O/W2 emulsion. Furthermore, droplet size analysis and emulsion rheology highlighted significant differences in the stability and structural behaviour of the emulsions as a function of electrolyte composition. In terms of colour retention and emulsion stability, a citrate-buffered system performed best. The results of this study highlight the importance of strict control of aqueous phase constituents to prevent anthocyanin degradation and maximise double emulsion stability. Additional experiments analysed the effect of pectin chemistry on the anthocyanin colour retention and leakage, finding no conclusive difference between the unmodified and amidated pectin.

Abstract Background Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) affects people’s quality of life (QoL). However changes in the internal meaning of QoL, known as Response shift (RS) may undermine longitudinal assessment of QoL. This study aimed to describe patterns of RS in people with DH using Classification and Regression Trees (CRT) and to explore the convergent validity of CRT with the then-test and ideals approaches. Methods Data from an 8-week clinical trial of mouthwashes for dentine hypersensitivity (n = 75) using the Dentine Hypersensitivity Experience Questionnaire (DHEQ) as the outcome measure, were analysed. CRT was used to examine 8-week changes in DHEQ total score as a dependent variable with clinical status for DH and each DHEQ subscale score (restrictions, coping, social, emotional and identity) as independent variables. Recalibration was inferred when the clinical change was not consistent with the DHEQ change score using a minimally important difference for DHEQ of 22 points. Reprioritization was inferred by changes in the relative importance of each subscale to the model over time. Results Overall, 50.7% of participants experienced a clinical improvement in their DH after treatment and 22.7% experienced an important improvement in their quality of life. Thirty-six per cent shifted their internal standards downward and 14.7% upwards, suggesting recalibration. Reprioritization occurred over time among the social and emotional impacts of DH. Conclusions CRT was a useful method to reveal both, the types and nature of RS in people with a mild health condition and demonstrated convergent validity with design based approaches to detect RS.

Currently there are no available methods for in-line measurement of gas-liquid interfacial tension during the flotation process. Microfluidic devices have the potential to be deployed in such settings to allow for a rapid in-line determination of the interfacial tension, and hence provide information on frother concentration. This paper presents the development of a simple method for interfacial tension determination based on a microfluidic device with a flow-focusing geometry. The bubble generation frequency in such a microfluidic device is correlated with the concentration of two flotation frothers (characterized by very different adsorption kinetic behavior). The results are compared with the equilibrium interfacial tension values determined using classical profile analysis tensiometry.

Biopolymer polyelectrolyte multilayers are a commonly studied soft matter system for wound healing applications due to the biocompatibility and beneficial properties of naturally occurring polyelectrolytes. In this work, a popular biopolymer, chitosan, was combined with the lesser known polysaccharide, fucoidan, to create a multilayer film capable of sequestering growth factor for later release. Fucoidan has been shown to act as a heparin-mimic due to similarities in the structure of the two molecules, however, the binding of fibroblast growth factor-2 to fucoidan has not been demonstrated in a multilayer system. This study assesses the ability of fucoidan to bind fibroblast growth factor-2 within a fucoidan/chitosan polyelectrolyte multilayer structure using attenuated total internal reflectance infrared spectroscopy and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring. The fibroblast growth factor-2 was sequestered into the polyelectrolyte multilayer as a cationic layer in the uppermost layers of the film structure. In addition, the diffusion of fibroblast growth factor-2 into the multilayer has been assessed.

Tekst dotyczy nauki czytania i pisania na początkowym etapie nauczania szkolnegooraz roli elementarzy w procesie alfabetyzacji dziecka. Artykuł ma charakter przeglądowy. W części pierwszej wskazano psycholingwistyczne podstawy czytania i pisania oraz różnice między systemami językowymi, warunkujące zastosowanie określonych metod nauki czytania i pisania. Opisano strukturę, funkcję i metodyczne aspekty pracy z elementarzem, który potraktowany został jako efektywna pomoc dydaktyczna i skuteczna forma inicjacji dziecka w świat pisma. W części drugiej scharakteryzowano wybrane elementarze oraz proponowane przez ich autorów koncepcje nauki czytania i pisania. Do analizy elementarzy zastosowano podejście tradycyjne – dydaktyczne i nieoceniające. Na koniec wskazano przykłady współczesnych elementarzy polskich, niemieckich i jeden rosyjski. Kryterium ich doboru był długoletni okres wykorzystywania (blisko pół wieku) w pierwszych latach nauki szkolnej oraz dominacja metod analityczno-syntetycznych w nauczaniu czytania i pisania.

The text is an attempt to show the relationship between the public sphere and education through the prism of the main assumptions of Serge Moscovici’s social representation theory (SRT). With this end in view, the beginning briefly presents Habermas’s understanding of the public sphere and then invokes by S. Jovchelovitch’s thesis about the existence of a dialectical relationship between the public sphere and social representations. The end raises questions about the social representations of empirical research in the field of education, with several examples and conclusions of international studies, for which the theory of social representations was the main theoretical and methodological perspective.
