Mutations in the lipoyltransferase 1 (LIPT1) gene are rare inborn errors of metabolism leading to a fatal condition characterized by lipoylation defects of the 2-ketoacid dehydrogenase complexes causing early-onset seizures, psychomotor retardation, abnormal muscle tone, severe lactic acidosis, and increased urine lactate, ketoglutarate, and 2-oxoacid levels. In this article, we characterized the disease pathophysiology using fibroblasts and induced neurons derived from a patient bearing a compound heterozygous mutation in LIPT1. A Western blot analysis revealed a reduced expression of LIPT1 and absent expression of lipoylated pyruvate dehydrogenase E2 (PDH E2) and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase E2 (α-KGDH E2) subunits. Accordingly, activities of PDH and α-KGDH were markedly reduced, associated with cell bioenergetics failure, iron accumulation, and lipid peroxidation. In addition, using a pharmacological screening, we identified a cocktail of antioxidants and mitochondrial boosting agents consisting of pantothenate, nicotinamide, vitamin E, thiamine, biotin, and α-lipoic acid, which is capable of rescuing LIPT1 pathophysiology, increasing the LIPT1 expression and lipoylation of mitochondrial proteins, improving cell bioenergetics, and eliminating iron overload and lipid peroxidation. Furthermore, our data suggest that the beneficial effect of the treatment is mainly mediated by SIRT3 activation. In conclusion, we have identified a promising therapeutic approach for correcting LIPT1 mutations.

Primary mitochondrial diseases result from mutations in nuclear DNA (nDNA) or mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genes, encoding proteins crucial for mitochondrial structure or function. Given that few disease-specific therapies are available for mitochondrial diseases, novel treatments to reverse mitochondrial dysfunction are necessary. In this work, we explored new therapeutic options in mitochondrial diseases using fibroblasts and induced neurons derived from patients with mutations in the GFM1 gene. This gene encodes the essential mitochondrial translation elongation factor G1 involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Due to the severe mitochondrial defect, mutant GFM1 fibroblasts cannot survive in galactose medium, making them an ideal screening model to test the effectiveness of pharmacological compounds. We found that the combination of polydatin and nicotinamide enabled the survival of mutant GFM1 fibroblasts in stress medium. We also demonstrated that polydatin and nicotinamide upregulated the mitochondrial Unfolded Protein Response (mtUPR), especially the SIRT3 pathway. Activation of mtUPR partially restored mitochondrial protein synthesis and expression, as well as improved cellular bioenergetics. Furthermore, we confirmed the positive effect of the treatment in GFM1 mutant induced neurons obtained by direct reprogramming from patient fibroblasts. Overall, we provide compelling evidence that mtUPR activation is a promising therapeutic strategy for GFM1 mutations.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic progressive ocular disease and the main cause of severe visual impairment in the elderly. Vitamin D deficiency may be a risk factor for AMD. Additionally, current evidence suggests dietary advice of increasing consumption of polyphenols, which may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this review was to describe the roles of vitamin D levels and polyphenols in the management of AMD. The results of this review showed mixed evidence regarding the protective effect of vitamin D against AMD. Polyphenols (flavonoids group, curcumin and resveratrol) seem to play an important role as angiogenesis inhibitors, but their effect on AMD is still unclear. Vitamin D and polyphenols may both play an important role as nutritional modifiable protective factors that reduce the risk of AMD progression. However, more research is necessary to better understand the roles of vitamin D and polyphenols in different stages of the disease.

Peru receives the second-highest number of Venezuelans after Colombia and more Venezuelan asylum seekers than any other country in the world. This article explores how COVID-19 has affected the living conditions of this group in Peru. The role of the Peruvian state in producing irregularity is analysed, as well as how this condition exacerbates the Venezuelan population’s socioeconomic vulnerability. The findings show the state’s active participation in producing this irregularity, mainly by restricting access to the refugee system and failing to consider applying the expanded definition of the 1984 Cartagena Declaration on Refugees, which has increased socioeconomic vulnerability, especially during the pandemic.

Este artigo apresenta um recorte de uma pesquisa cujo objetivo foi analisar os sentidos da escola para os Sateré Mawé. De caráter etnográfico, a pesquisa procurou empreender uma “descrição densa” das relações sociais e simbólicas observadas na Escola Municipal Indígena Wahuiru Pakup (Novo Sol), localizada na Terra Indígena Andirá-Marau, Comunidade Monte Salém, Maués/Amazonas. A observação participante no dia a dia das famílias – da farinhada às brincadeiras no rio com as crianças –, e a escuta ativa realizada com os interlocutores da pesquisa – o professor, os alunos e seus pais – possibilitou a compreensão dos sentidos da escola para a comunidade.

Helichrysum stoechas (L.) Moench (H. stoechas) is a medicinal plant traditionally used in the Iberian Peninsula to treat different disorders such as arterial hypertension. The aim of this study was to investigate the vascular effects of a polyphenolic methanolic extract of H. stoechas, which has high antioxidant activity, and its mechanism of action. Isometric myography studies were performed in an organ bath with rat aortic rings with intact endothelium. The H. stoechas extract produced vasorelaxation in the aortic rings that were precontracted by phenylephrine or KCl. L-NAME and Rp-8-Br-PET-cGMPS but not indomethacin or H-89; it also reduced the relaxant response evoked by H. stoechas extract on the phenylephrine-induced contractions. H. stoechas extract reduced the response to CaCl2 similar to verapamil and reduced the phenylephrine-induced contractions comparable with heparin. TRAM-34, apamin and glibenclamide reduced relaxation induced by the H. stoechas extract. The combination of L-NAME+TRAM-34+apamin almost completely inhibited the H. stoechas-induced effect. In conclusion, the relaxant effect of the H. stoechas extract is partially mediated by endothelium through the activation of the NO/PKG/cGMP pathway and the opening of Ca2+-activated K+ channels. Furthermore, the decrease in the cytosolic Ca2+ by the inhibition of Ca2+ influx through the L-type Ca2+ channels and by the reduction of Ca2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum via the IP3 pathway is also involved.

Power line communications (PLC) have been an active research area for many years and it is still the case, mainly because they present economic and technical natural advantages for a wide range of applications using the existing electrical grid as transmission medium. In this paper, the authors provide an update on PLC technologies and their applications in Smart Grids, the main challenges they are currently facing, how they can be addressed, and the current research initiatives.

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo describir las oportunidades y los desafíos de los procesos de capacitación en la articulación de iniciativas regionales y nacionales de comunicación para la prevención de arbovirosis, usando como ejemplo las lecciones aprendidas en el contexto cubano. En febrero de 2016 y diciembre de 2017 profesionales del Instituto de Medicina Tropical Pedro Kourí participaron en la realización de talleres de fortalecimiento de capacidades de comunicación para la prevención de arbovirosis en la Atención Primaria de Salud con la incorporación paulatina de los más recientes enfoques promovidos por la Organización Panamericana de la Salud sobre el tema. Se capacitaron especialistas de diferentes perfiles profesionales a nivel nacional, provincial, municipal y de áreas de salud, se formaron y consolidaron equipos multidisciplinarios en los diferentes niveles, se asignaron y articularon tareas concretas a cada nivel, y se establecieron sitios de demostración de los enfoques de comunicación promovidos en los talleres. Asimismo, se identificaron necesidades de aprendizaje en comunicación social y se incorporaron a la estrategia nacional 2018-2021 actividades de capacitación del personal técnico y de monitoreo y evaluación con el objetivo de garantizar la implementación de acciones de comunicación y su sostenibilidad. No obstante, las instituciones participantes tendrán que afrontar desafíos propios de la comunicación en la prevención de las arbovirosis como, por ejemplo, la fluctuación del personal entrenado, la movilización de recursos para la comunicación, y la identificación de indicadores adecuados de evaluación.

Background/Aims: Serotonin (5-HT) is a chief modulator of intestinal activity. The effects of 5-HT depend on its extracellular availability, which is mainly controlled by serotonin transporter (SERT), expressed in enterocytes. On the other hand, innate immunity, mediated by Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and nucleotide oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptors (NLRs), is known to control intestinal microbiota and maintain intestinal homeostasis. The dysregulation of the intestinal serotonergic system and innate immunity has been observed in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), the incidence of which has severely increased all over the world. The aim of the present study, therefore, was to analyze the effect of NOD2 on intestinal SERT activity and expression, as well as to study the crosstalk of NOD2 with TLR2 and TLR4. Methods: Intestinal epithelial cell line Caco-2/TC7 was used to analyze SERT activity and SERT, NOD2, TLR2 and TLR4 molecular expression by real-time PCR and western blotting. Moreover, intestinal tract (ileum and colon) from mice deficient in TLR2, TLR4 or TLR2/4 receptors was used to test the interdependence of NOD2 with these TLR receptors. Results: NOD2 activation inhibits SERT activity in Caco-2/TC7 cells, mainly due to the decrement of SERT molecular expression, with RIP2/RICK being the intracellular pathway involved in this effect. This inhibitory effect on SERT would yield an increment of extracellular 5-HT availability. In this sense, 5-HT strongly inhibits NOD2 expression. In addition, NOD2 showed greater interdependence with TLR2 than with TLR4. Indeed, NOD2 expression significantly increased in both cells treated with TLR2 agonists and the intestinal tract of Tlr2-/- mice. Conclusions: It may be inferred from our data that NOD2 could play a role in intestinal pathophysiology not only through its inherent innate immune role but also due to its interaction with other receptors as TLR2 and the modulation of the intestinal serotonergic system decreasing SERT activity and expression.

In recent years, the general and scientific interest in nutrition, digestion, and what role they play in our body has increased, and there is still much work to be carried out in the field of developing sensors and techniques that are capable of identifying and quantifying the chemical species involved in these processes. Iron deficiency is the most common and widespread nutritional disorder that mainly affects the health of children and women. Iron from the diet may be available as heme or organic iron, or as non-heme or inorganic iron. The absorption of non-heme iron requires its solubilization and reduction in the ferric state to ferrous that begins in the gastric acid environment, because iron in the ferric state is very poorly absorbable. There are chemical species with reducing capacity (antioxidants) that also have the ability to reduce iron, such as ascorbic acid. This paper aims to develop a sensor for measuring the release of encapsulated active compounds, in different media, based on dielectric properties measurement in the radio frequency range. An impedance sensor able to measure the release of microencapsulated active compounds was developed. The sensor was tested with calcium alginate beads encapsulating iron ions and ascorbic acid as active compounds. The prediction and measurement potential of this sensor was improved by developing a thermodynamic model that allows obtaining kinetic parameters that will allow suitable encapsulation design for subsequent release.

Hot air drying (HAD) at temperatures below the spontaneous evaporation temperature could be combined with microwave (MW) radiation as a thermal energy source in order to reduce the drying time. A photon flux in the microwave range interacts with dipolar molecules (water) through orientation and induction, producing electrical energy storage and thermal energy accumulation and generating an increase in the internal energy of food. The different mechanisms involved in water transport could change when the microwave penetration depth exceeds the sample characteristic dimension of mass transport. The aim of this paper is to determine the effect of MW in the combined HAD-MW drying of raw potato in order to obtain the real driving forces and mechanisms involved in the water transport, with the purpose of optimizing the MW power used. For this purpose, combined drying was carried out on potato samples (0, 4 and 6 W/g). The sample surface temperature was monitored by infrared thermography, and the sample mass was measured continuously through a precision balance. In parallel with continuous drying, another drying treatment was performed at different times (20, 40, 60, 90, 120, 180, 420 min) and conditions (0, 4 and 6 W/g) to analyze the dielectric properties, mass, moisture, volume and water activity. The results show that it is possible to monitor combined drying by infrared thermography, and it can be concluded that the convection heating is mostly transformed into surface water evaporation, with negligible thermal conduction from the surface, and microwave radiation is mostly transformed into an increase in the potato’s internal energy.

Flavonoids are known to relax precontracted intestinal smooth muscle and delay intestinal transit or intestinal peristalsis. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of genistein and quercetin on spontaneous contractions of rabbit duodenum in vitro in an organ bath. Genistein and quercetin (0.1-10 µM) reduced the amplitude of spontaneous contractions in the longitudinal and circular smooth muscle of rabbit duodenum, but they did not modify the frequency. Bay K8644 (L-type Ca2+ channel activator), apamin, charybdotoxin, and tetraetylammonium (K+ channel blockers) reverted the inhibition of amplitude of spontaneous contractions induced by genistein in longitudinal and circular smooth muscle. H-89 (protein kinase A inhibitor) antagonized the reduction of the amplitude of spontaneous contractions induced by quercetin in longitudinal and circular smooth muscle of duodenum, while 2,5-dideoxiadenosine (adenylyl cyclase inhibitor) reverted only the reduction of the amplitude in circular smooth muscle. In conclusion, genistein and quercetin reduce the spontaneous contractions in the duodenum by different mechanisms of actions. The effect of genistein would be mediated by Ca2+ and K+ channels, while the effect of quercetin would be mediated by cAMP and protein kinase A.

Hyperuniform geometries feature correlated disordered topologies which follow from a tailored k-space design. Here, we study gold plasmonic hyperuniform disordered surfaces and, by momentum spectroscopy, we report evidence of k-space engineering on both light scattering and light emission. Even if the structures lack a well-defined periodicity, emission and scattering are directional in ring-shaped patterns. The opening of these rotational-symmetric patterns scales with the hyperuniform correlation length parameter as predicted via the spectral function method.

Process control in the industry requires fast, safe and easily applicable methods. In this sense, the use of dielectric spectroscopy in the microwave range can be a great opportunity to monitor processes in which the mobility and quantity of water is the main property to produce a quality and safety product. The candying of fruits is an operation in which the samples are first osmotically dehydrated and then exposed to a hot air-drying operation. This process produces changes in both the structure of the tissue and the relationships between water, the solid matrix and the added soluble solids. The aim of this paper is to develop a dielectric tool to predict the water/sucrose states throughout the candying of apple, by considering the complexity of the tissue and describing the different transport phenomena and the different transition processes of the sucrose inside the sample.

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) from bone marrow (BM) have been used in coculture systems as a feeder layer for promoting the expansion of hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) for hematopoietic cell transplantation. Because BM has some drawbacks, umbilical cord blood (UCB) and placenta (PL) have been proposed as possible alternative sources of MSCs. However, MSCs from UCB and PL sources have not been compared to determine which of these cell populations has the best capacity of promoting hematopoietic expansion. In this study, MSCs from UCB and PL were cultured under the same conditions to compare their capacities to support the expansion of HPCs in vitro. MSCs were cocultured with CD34+CD38−Lin− HPCs in the presence or absence of early acting cytokines. HPC expansion was analyzed through quantification of colony-forming cells (CFCs), long-term culture-initiating cells (LTC-ICs), and CD34+CD38−Lin− cells. MSCs from UCB and PL have similar capacities to increase HPC expansion, and this capacity is similar to that presented by BM-MSCs. Here, we are the first to determine that MSCs from UCB and PL have similar capacities to promote HPC expansion; however, PL is a better alternative source because MSCs can be obtained from a higher proportion of samples.

Se han revisado críticamente las citas en Chile de especies y subespecies de áfidos (Aphididae) contenidas en 139 contribuciones científicas. Se añaden citas de numerosas especies a partir de especímenes de las colecciones del Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle (París, Francia), del Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero (SAG) (Santiago de Chile, Chile), del Natural History Museum (Londres, Reino Unido), de las universidades de León (España) y Talca (Chile) y de J. Ortego (Mendoza, Argentina). El catálogo afídico chileno queda formado por 169 especies y subespecies, quedando excluidas de él Aphis (Toxoptera) citricidus, Aphis medicaginis, Aphis rumicis, Dysaphis apiifolia petroselini, Lipaphis erysimi y Uroleucon aaroni. Se citan por primera vez en América del Sur Aphis rubicola, Brachycaudus amygdalinus e Illinoia pepperi. Se citan por primera vez en Chile Aphis forbesi, Aphis senecionicoides, Hyadaphis passerini, Hyperomyzus carduellinus, Illinoia azaleae, Neotoxoptera oliveri y Pentalonia nigronervosa. Se dan más de un centenar de primeras citas regionales o provinciales de especies. Se presenta por primera vez la relación de plantas hospedadoras de los pulgones citados en el país. Se comentan las composiciones de las afidofaunas regionales y provinciales. Se ofrece una valoración de los componentes alóctono y autóctono de la afidofauna chilena.

Trolox is a hydrophilic analogue of vitamin E and a free radical scavenger. Ethanol diminishes the amplitude of spontaneous contractions and acetylcholine (ACh)-induced contractions in rabbit duodenum. The aim of this work was to study the effect of Trolox on the alterations induced by ethanol on contractility and lipid peroxidation in the duodenum. The duodenal contractility studies in vitro were carried out in an organ bath and the levels of malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxyalkenals (MDA+4-HAD) were measured by spectrophotometry. Trolox increased the reduction induced by ethanol on the amplitude of spontaneous contractions in longitudinal muscle but not in circular muscle. Trolox 4 mM decreased the effects of ethanol on ACh-induced contractions and on MDA+4-HDA concentrations. We conclude that Trolox might prevent oxidative stress induced by ethanol in the duodenum.El Trolox es un análogo hidrofílico de la vitamina E y un agente que secuestra radicales libres. El etanol disminuye la amplitud de las contracciones espontáneas y las contracciones inducidas a la acetilcolina en el duodeno de conejo. El objetivo de este trabajo era estudiar el efecto del Trolox en las alteraciones inducidas por el etanol sobre la contractilidad y la peroxidación lipídica en el duodeno. Los estudios de contractilidad duodenal in vitro se realizaron en un baño de órganos y los niveles de MDA+4-HDA se midieron por espectofotometría. El Trolox aumentó la reducción inducida por el etanol sobre la amplitud de las contracciones espontáneas en el músculo longitudinal pero no en el músculo circular de duodeno. El Trolox 4 mM redujo los efectos del etanol sobre las contracciones inducidas a la acetilcolina y sobre las concentraciones de MDA+4-HDA. Se concluye que el Trolox podría prevenir el estrés oxidativo inducido por el etanol en el duodeno.

Objetivos. Documentar el proceso y analizar los resultados de la aplicación de una estrategia dirigida a aumentar la participación comunitaria en la lucha contra el mosquito vector del dengue. Métodos. Entre mayo de 2002 y mayo de 2004 se aplicó una intervención para transformar la acción social contra el dengue en tres circunscripciones del municipio Playa, Ciudad de La Habana, Cuba. Se conformó un grupo de aprendizaje y grupos de trabajo comunitario en las localidades. Se siguió un modelo de educación popular que conjugaba la puesta en práctica de las acciones previstas con sesiones de reflexión y aprendizaje a partir de los resultados y la reformulación del trabajo para las etapas subsiguientes. Se desarrollaron diagnósticos comunitarios, acciones preventivas, de comunicación, vigilancia y evaluación. Los cambios en la participación se identificaron mediante la técnica de análisis de contenido de documentos y entrevistas a informantes clave. Resultados. El trabajo comunitario avanzó de acuerdo con las capacidades y los intereses de cada comunidad con enfoques de trabajo diferentes: de comunidad saludable, de riesgo ambiental y de riesgo entomológico. Se constataron cambios positivos en el concepto de participación según las cinco dimensiones evaluadas: liderazgo, identificación de necesidades, organización, gestión y movilización de recursos. Al final de dos años de intervención, el índice de depósitos con larvas o pupas de Aedes aegypti por 100 viviendas inspeccionadas se redujo en 79% y no se detectaron casos de dengue en ninguna de las circunscripciones. Conclusiones. La estrategia empleada permitió reducir el nivel de infestación con el mosquito vector mediante el aumento de la participación de la comunidad en la toma de decisiones, el fortalecimiento de las competencias de los equipos médico y de los GTC para liderar procesos participativos en sus comunidades y la elevación de la confianza de los miembros de la comunidad en sus posibilidades de llevar a cabo transformaciones con recursos propios y apoyo intersectorial.

TLR2 is a microbiota recognition receptor that has been described to contribute to intestinal homeostasis and to ameliorate inflammatory intestinal injury. In this context, serotonin (5-HT) has shown to be an essential intestinal physiological neuromodulator that is also involved in intestinal inflammatory diseases. Since the interaction between TLR2 activation and the intestinal serotoninergic system remains non-investigated, our main aim was to analyze the effect of TLR2 on intestinal serotonin transporter (SERT) activity and expression and the intracellular pathways involved. Caco-2/TC7 cells were used to analyze SERT and TLR2 molecular expression and SERT activity by measuring 5-HT uptake. The results showed that apical TLR2 activation inhibits SERT activity in Caco-2/TC7 cells mainly by reducing SERT protein level either in the plasma membrane, after short-term TLR2 activation or in both the plasma membrane and cell lysate, after long-term activation. cAMP/PKA pathway appears to mediate short-term inhibitory effect of TLR2 on SERT; however, p38 MAPK pathway has been shown to be involved in both short- and long-term TLR2 effect. Reciprocally, 5-HT long-term treatment yielded TLR2 down regulation in Caco-2/TC7 cells. Finally, results from in vivo showed an augmented intestinal SERT expression in mice Tlr2-/-, thus confirming our inhibitory effect of TLR2 on intestinal SERT in vitro. The present work infers that TLR2 may act in intestinal pathophysiology, not only by its inherent innate immune role, but also by regulating the intestinal serotoninergic system.

The reemergence of dengue as an important public health problem reflects the difficulties in sustaining vertically organized, effective, control programs and the need for community-based strategies for Aedes aegypti control that result in behavioral change. We aimed to disentangle the relationships between underlying determinants of dengue related practices. We conducted a cross-sectional study in 780 households in La Lisa, Havana, Cuba. A questionnaire and an observation guide were administrated to collect information on variables related to economic status, knowledge on dengue, risk perception and practices associated with Aedes aegypti breading sites. To test a conceptual model that hypothesized direct relationships among all these constructs, we first used Exploratory Factor Analysis with Principal Component Analysis to establish the relationship between observed variables and the underlying latent variables. Subsequently, we tested whether the observed data supported the conceptual model through Confirmatory Factor Analysis. Exploratory Factor Analysis indicated that the items measured could be reduced into five factors with an eigenvalue >1.0: Knowledge on dengue, Intradomiciliar risk practices, Peridomiciliar risk practices, Risk perception and Economic status. The proportion of the total variance in the data explained by these five factors was 74.3%. The Confirmatory Factor Analysis model differed from our hypothesized conceptual model. Only Knowledge on dengue had a significant, direct, positive, effect on Practices. There was also a direct association of Economic status with Knowledge on dengue, but not with Risk perception and Practices. Clarifying the relationship between direct and indirect determinants of dengue related practices contributes to a better understanding of the potential effect of Information Education and Communication on practices and on the reduction of Aedes aegypti breeding sites and provides inputs for designing a community based strategy for dengue control.

La epilepsia es una condición médica de alta representación en la población infanto juvenil a nivel mundial, y si particularizamos esta en retrasados mentales, encontramos cifras bien elevadas en este tipo de población. Por tanto, no resulta raro el interés por estudiar si ella influye de alguna manera en el comportamiento de la comorbilidad psiquiátrica en niños y adolescentes con discapacidad cognitiva. Si a este acápite le añadimos la influencia de los síndromes genéticos y de la sicopatología parental en el comportamiento de la comorbilidad psiquiátrica de estos niños y adolescentes, estaremos obteniendo un compendio muy completo y actualizado sobre la influencia de importantes factores biológicos en esta particular condición. El objetivo de la presente revisión es profundizar en el conocimiento de este acápite y actualizarlo según los estudios más recientes y avanzados del tema. Se encontrará aquí la unanimidad de investigadores en el criterio de la influencia directa de estos factores en la mayor presencia de comorbilidades psiquiátricas en poblaciones de discapacitados cognitivos, así como los principales aspectos de ella que favorecen este comportamiento.Epilepsy is a medical condition of high representation in the infantile-youthful population at world level and if we characterize it in mentally retarded persons, it is possible to find very high figures in this type of population. Thus, it is usual the interest to study if it influence somehow in the behavior of psychiatric co-morbidity in children and adolescents presenting with cognitive inability. If to this paragraph we added the influence of genetic syndromes and of the parental psychopathology in the behavior of above mentioned co-morbidity in these children and adolescents, we will be achieving a very complete and updated compendium on the influence of significant biological factors in this particular condition. The objective of present review is to study in depth the knowledge of this paragraph and update it according the more recent and advanced studies on this subject. Here, we will found the researchers consensus in the criteria of the direct influence of these factors in the great presence of psychiatric co-morbidities in cognitive incapacited persons, as well as its major features favoring this behavior.

OBJETIVOS: evaluar el impacto de los huracanes Gustav e Ike en la salud psicológica de un grupo de escolares. Caracterizar la representación psicológica que de los huracanes tuvieron estos, e identificar la presencia de síntomas psicológicos durante y posterior al paso de los meteoros por la localidad afectada. MÉTODOS: se realizó un estudio de casos clínicos 3 meses después de haber pasado los eventos meteorológicos (noviembre 2008). Se seleccionaron 10 niños con edades entre 7 y 10 años, y se recogió el antecedente de daño parcial o total en sus viviendas. La comunidad escogida para el estudio fue Bacunagua, perteneciente al municipio de Los Palacios, el más afectado en la provincia de Pinar del Río. Los instrumentos utilizados fueron el dibujo libre, la composición con el tema "El ciclón", y la entrevista, además se realizó una entrevista a los padres, para recoger el comportamiento de los niños durante y después del paso del ciclón. RESULTADOS: se consideraron 3 categorías como representación psicológica, las cuales fueron destrucción, afección emocional y recuperación; y los síntomas identificados fueron la ansiedad y la tristeza, en 2 niños los síntomas fueron suficientes para considerar la posibilidad Trastorno de Adaptación con Síntoma Ansioso-depresivo. CONCLUSIONES: el trabajo nos permitió acercarnos a los efectos psicológicos de los desastres desde técnicas psicológicas proyectivas, y nos mostró las características en tanto representación y sintomatología psicológica que poseían los escolares del meteoro que los afectó, lo cual permitió acercarse al tratamiento pos desastre existente y proponer recomendaciones.OBJECTIVES: to assess the impact of hurricanes Gustav and Ike on the psychological health of a group of schoolchildren. To characterize the psychological representation that hurricanes had on they and to identify the presence of psychological symptoms during and after the passing of meteors by the affected place. METHODS: a study of three clinical cases was conducted three months after the passing of these metereological events (November, 2008). Ten children were selected aged between 7 and 10 and collecting the background of partial damage in their houses. Community selected for study was Bacunagua from the Los Palacios municipality because of this was the more affected one in the Pinar del Río province. The tools used were the free drawing, a composition called "The Cyclone" and an interview with the children as well as with parents to know the behavior of children during the cyclone passing. RESULTS: authors took into account three categories as psychological representation, which included destruction, emotional affection and recovery and the identified symptoms were enough to consider the possibility of Adaptation Disorder with Impatient-Depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: present paper allowed us an approach to psychological effects of disasters using projective psychological techniques showing the representation features and the psychological symptoms of schoolchildren due to the meteor affecting them and it was possible to come closer to existing post-disaster treatment and to propose the appropriate recommendations.

El maltrato infantil es uno de los temas más álgidos dentro de la práctica médica pediátrica; si a esto se le suma la condición de discapacidad cognitiva que convierte a niños y adolescentes en población más expuesta y menos apta para identificarlo y defenderse, se estaría tratando un problema médico de alta complejidad. Es importante el conocimiento de este tema en el personal de salud más cercano a la familia, lo que puede contribuir a la disminución de la frecuencia del maltrato y a reducir el tiempo de daño al niño o adolescente. Todo lo anterior puede evitar que estos pequeños sean mal diagnosticados y mal tratados a punto de partida de la desorganización conductual y emocional que en ellos pueden aparecer secundarios al maltrato, muchas veces inexplicables para padres y médicos. Es importante poner a disposición de los especialistas de la atención primaria y personal de salud comunitario, algunos apuntes sobre las particularidades del maltrato infantil en niños y adolescentes con necesidades cognitivas especiales, sus causas, tipos y consecuencias más frecuentes para su salud mental. El maltrato infanto juvenil en discapacitados cognitivos no es probablemente infrecuente en las comunidades y sí quizás poco identificado. La capacidad del personal de salud para encontrarlo siempre será oportuna y salvadora, de ahí la necesidad de conocimientos sobre el tema.The infantile ill-treatment is one of the more inhuman subjects in the pediatric medical practice and if to this feature we added the cognitive inability status converting children and adolescents into a more exposed and less able population to identify it and to defend itself, this will becomes in very complex medical problem. It is important the knowledge of this subject by health staff nearest of family, contributing to decrease of ill-treatment frequency and reducing the damage time to child or adolescent. The above mentioned may to avoid that these little children be ill-diagnosed and ill-treated from the point of view of behavioral and emotional disorganization t hat in their case may to appear secondary to ill-treatment, many times inexplicable for parents and physicians. It is important that primary care specialists and community health staff have some notes on distinctive features of infantile ill-treatment in children and adolescents with special cognitive needs, its causes, types and more frequent consequences for its mental hygiene. The infantile-juvenile ill-treatment in cognitive disabled is frequent in communities and maybe not much identified. Ability of health staff to find it always will be appropriate and savior, thus the need of knowledges on this subject.

RESUMEN Objetivo Identificar facilitadores y barreras del proceso de traslación de estrategias de empoderamiento comunitario a la práctica del programa nacional de control de Aedes aegypti en Cuba. Métodos Se realizó un estudio de caso del proceso en el período 2005–2009 en los niveles nacional y provincial del programa de control. Se triangularon datos procedentes de la observación participante, la entrevista en profundidad y el análisis de documentos, que se analizaron inductiva y deductivamente. Resultados Entre los facilitadores destacan la existencia, por un lado, de una propuesta de estrategia de empoderamiento efectiva en la reducción de la infestación por Aedes aegypti, que estaba descrita de manera que pudiera ser implementada por el personal del programa y, por otro lado, de un programa de control con cobertura nacional dispuesto a ponerla en práctica. Las principales barreras fueron la complejidad propia de la estrategia y la ausencia de cambios organizacionales que facilitaran su inserción dentro del programa. Tanto las barreras como los facilitadores fueron de naturaleza estática o dinámica. Los factores dinámicos son aquellos que ofrecen señales para la acción. Conclusiones Son múltiples las barreras y facilitadores del proceso de traslación a la práctica de las estrategias de empoderamiento comunitario en el programa nacional de control de Aedes aegypti en Cuba. Su análisis como factores de naturaleza estática y dinámica permitiría diseñar estrategias más adecuadas y eficaces para impulsar el proceso e incrementaría sus probabilidades de éxito.

Introduction: Jasonia glutinosa is an endemic plant species of the Iberian Peninsula and Southern France traditionally used in infusions as a spasmolytic; this plant is also known as "té de roca" (rock tea) but there is no scientific evidence about the effects of this plant. Aim: To evaluate the spasmolytic effect of rock tea. Methods: We have studied the in vitro effect of a rock tea extract on rat duodenum spontaneous contractions and the in vivo effect on mice gastrointestinal transit. Results: Rock tea extract reduced the spontaneous contractions of rat duodenal smooth muscle, inhibited KCl-induced contractions and blocked the contractions invoked by both extracellular Ca2+ and the agonist of L-type calcium channels Bay K8644. This inhibitory effect was similar to the one observed after the addition of the antagonist of L-type calcium channels verapamil. Rock tea did not modify gastrointestinal transit in healthy mice. However, after the treatment with dextran sulfate sodium, an inducer of colitis, rock tea extract reverted the increase in the gastrointestinal transit associated with this treatment. Conclusion: Rock tea extract relaxed duodenal smooth muscle via L-type calcium channels and normalized gastrointestinal transit in a model of colitis. These results may validate the traditional use of Jasonia glutinosa in patients with gastrointestinal alterations. Thus, rock tea may be used as a spasmolytic agent to treat gastrointestinal disorders.

Introducción: se reporta la relación entre VIH/sida y enfermedad mental, pero en Cuba no se han estudiado alteraciones de la vida psíquica en pacientes con comienzo de sida. Métodos: población de estudio: pacientes con diagnóstico de aparición de sida a menos de un año del diagnóstico, de ambos sexos; se empleó el sistema de registro SIDATRAT listándose y localizándose los casos. Se propuso conocer el comportamiento de variables de la vida psíquica en pacientes con aparición de sida y su asociación con inmunocompetencia. Resultados: se estimaron estados afectivos, autorregulación psíquica, conductas frente a la enfermedad, linfocitos CD4+ y carga viral en 42 pacientes con inicio de sida con y sin síntomas psicopatológicos. Se emplearon estadísticas descriptivas y ANOVA de comparación de medias para relacionar variables y pruebas robustas confirmatorias. Los estados afectivos negativos no fueron buenos indicadores de alteración psíquica, con medias homogéneas entre grupos. En pacientes sintomáticos predominó la "toma de decisiones reflexivas-responsabilidad", con medias superiores para "descontrol" e inferiores en "autocontrol" indicadoras de peor afrontamiento. Puntajes altos para "autocontrol" se asociaron con baja carga viral, pero no con conteos de LT CD4+; no se relacionaron variables psíquicas con inmunocompetencia.

Primary mitochondrial diseases result from mutations in nuclear DNA (nDNA) or mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genes, encoding proteins crucial for mitochondrial structure or function. Given that few disease-specific therapies are available for mitochondrial diseases, novel treatments to reverse mitochondrial dysfunction are necessary. In this work, we explored new therapeutic options in mitochondrial diseases using fibroblasts and induced neurons derived from patients with mutations in the GFM1 gene. This gene encodes the essential mitochondrial translation elongation factor G1 involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Due to the severe mitochondrial defect, mutant GFM1 fibroblasts cannot survive in galactose medium, making them an ideal screening model to test the effectiveness of pharmacological compounds. We found that the combination of polydatin and nicotinamide enabled the survival of mutant GFM1 fibroblasts in stress medium. We also demonstrated that polydatin and nicotinamide upregulated the mitochondrial Unfolded Protein Response (mtUPR), especially the SIRT3 pathway. Activation of mtUPR partially restored mitochondrial protein synthesis and expression, as well as improved cellular bioenergetics. Furthermore, we confirmed the positive effect of the treatment in GFM1 mutant induced neurons obtained by direct reprogramming from patient fibroblasts. Overall, we provide compelling evidence that mtUPR activation is a promising therapeutic strategy for GFM1 mutations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
