We derive several versions of the cell theory for a crystal phase of hard equilateral triangles. To that purpose we analytically calculated the free area of a frozen oriented or freely rotating particle inside the cavity formed by its neighbours in a chiral configuration of their orientations. From the most successful versions of the theory we predict an equation of state which, despite being derived from a crystal configuration of particles, describes very reasonably the equation of state of the 6-atic liquid-crystal phase at packing fractions not very close from the isotropic-6-atic bifurcation. Also, the same equation of state performs well when compared to that from MC simulations for the stable crystal phase. The agreement can even be improved by selecting adequate values for the angle of chirality.Despite the success of two of the versions of the theory for the pressure, we show that the free-energy is an increasing function of the angle of chirality, implying that the most stable phase is the achiral phase. Furthermore, we show that possible clustering effects, such as the formation of perfect chiral hexagonal clusters, which in turn crystallize into an hexagonal lattice, cannot explain the presence of the chirality observed in simulations., Comment: 16 pages. 14 figures

Fluids made of two-dimensional hard particles with polygonal shapes may stabilize symmetries which do not result directly from the particle shape. This is due to the formation of clusters in the fluid. Entropy alone can drive these effects, which represent a challenge for standard theories. In this article we present a general density-functional theory for clustering effects in fluids of hard particles in two dimensions. The theory combines a free-energy functional of the angular distribution function with an association energy term which qualitatively reproduces the clustering tendencies of the particles found in Monte Carlo simulations. We have used an extended Scaled-Particle Theory that incorporates four-body correlations through the fourth-order virial coefficient to analyse the orientational properties of a fluid of hard right-angle triangles. This fluid has been analysed by computer simulation studies, with clear indications of strong octatic correlations present in the liquid-crystal phase, although the more symmetric order tetratic phase would seem to be the most plausible candidate. Standard theories based on the second virial coefficient are unable to reproduce this behaviour. Our extended theory predicts that octatic correlations, associated to a symmetry under global rotations of the oriented fluid by $45^{\circ}$, are highly enhanced, but not enough to give rise to a thermodynamically stable phase with strict octatic symmetry. We discuss different scenarios to improve the theoretical understanding of the elusive octatic phase in this intriguing fluid., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Vibrated monolayers of granular particles confined into horizontal cavities form a variety of fluid patterns with orientational order that resemble equilibrium liquid-crystal phases. In some cases one can identify nematic and smectic patters that can be understood in terms of classical statistical mechanics of hard bodies. Low aspect ratio cylinders project as rectangles and form uniaxial, or 2-atic, and tetratic, or 4-atic, nematic phases. Other polygonal particles may exhibit different liquid-crystal phases, in general $p$-atic phases, of higher symmetries. We give a brief summary of theoretical work on rectangles and triangles, and provide some experimental results on vibrated monolayers. In the case of equilateral triangles, the theory predicts an exotic triatic phase, or 6-atic phase, with six-fold symmetry and three equivalent directors. Right-angled triangles exhibit a 4-atic phase with strong octatic (8-atic) correlations. Experiments on cylinders show 4-atic textures and, even more remarkable, geometric frustration caused by confinement excites topological defects, which seem to follow the same topological rules as standard liquid crystals. Some of our findings can be understood with the help of simulations of hard particles subject to thermal equilibrium, although standard Density-Functional Theories fail to account for the correct equilibrium phases in some cases., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures

We introduce a model for a fluid of polydisperse rounded hard rectangles where the length and width of the rectangular core are fixed, while the roundness is taken into account by the convex envelope of a disk displaced along the perimeter of the core. The diameter of the disk has a continuous polydispersity described by a Schultz distribution function. We implemented the scaled particle theory for this model with the aim to studying: (i) the effect of roundness on the phase behavior of the one-component hard-rectangle fluid, and (ii) how polydispersity affects phase transitions between isotropic, nematic and tetratic phases. We found that roundness greatly affects the tetratic phase, whose region of stability in the phase diagram strongly decreases as the roundness parameter is increased. Also the interval of aspect ratios where the tetratic-nematic and isotropic-nematic phase transitions are of first order considerably reduces with roundness, both transitions becoming weaker. Polydispersity induces strong fractionation between the coexisting phases, with the nematic phase enriched in particles of lower roundness. Finally, for high enough polydispersity and certain mean aspect ratios, the isotropic-to-nematic transition can change from second (for the one-component fluid) to first order. We also found a packing-fraction inversion phenomenon for large polydispersities: the coexisting isotropic phase has a higher packing fraction than the nematic., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

Recent studies have shown the fluid of hard right triangles to possess fourfold and quasi-eightfold (octatic) orientational symmetries. However, the standard density-functional theory for two-dimensional anisotropic fluids, based on two-body correlations, and an extension to incorporate three-body correlations, fail to describe these symmetries. To explain the origin of octatic symmetry we postulate strong particle clustering as a crucial ingredient. We use Scaled Particle Theory to analyze four binary mixtures of hard right triangles and squares, three of them being extreme models for a one-component fluid, where right triangles can exist as monomeric entities together with triangular dimers, square dimers or square tetramers. Phase diagrams exhibit a rich phenomenology, with demixing and three-phase coexistences. More important, under some circumstances the orientational distribution function of triangles has equally high peaks at relative particle angles 0, $\pi/2,$ and $\pi$, signalling fourfold, tetratic order, but also secondary peaks located at $\pi/4$ and $3\pi/4$, a feature of eightfold, octatic order. Also, we extend the binary mixture model to a quaternary mixture consisting of four types of clusters: monomers, triangular and square dimers, and square tetramers. This mixture is analyzed using Scaled Particle Theory under the restriction of fixed cluster fractions. Apart from the obvious tetratic phase promoted by tetramers, we found that, for certain cluster compositions, the total orientational distribution function of monomers can exhibit quasi-eightfold (octatic) symmetry. The study gives evidence on the importance of clustering to explain the peculiar orientational properties of liquid-crystal phases in some two dimensional fluids., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures. A fluid of hard right isosceles triangles was studied using an extension of Scaled-Particle Density-Functional Theory which includes the exact third virial coefficient. We show that the only orientationally ordered stable liquid-crystal phase predicted by the theory is the uniaxial nematic phase, in agreement with the second-order virial theory. By contrast, Monte Carlo simulations predict exotic liquid-crystal phases exhibiting tetratic and octatic correlations, with orientational distribution functions having four and eight equivalent peaks, respectively. This demonstrates the failure of the standard Density Functional Theory based on two and three-body correlations to describe high-symmetry orientational phases in two-dimensional hard right-triangle fluids, and points to the necessity to reformulate the theory to take into account high-order body correlations and ultimately particle self-assembling and clustering effects. This avenue may represent a great challenge for future research, and we discuss some fundamental ideas to construct a modified version of Density-Functional Theory to account for these clustering effects., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Using Density Functional Theory we theoretically study the orientational properties of uniform phases of hard kites -- two isosceles triangles joined by their common base. Two approximations are used: Scaled Particle Theory, and a new approach which better approximates third virial coefficients of two-dimensional hard particles. By varying some of their geometrical parameters kites can be transformed into squares, rhombuses, triangles, and also very elongated particles, even reaching the hard-needle limit. Thus a fluid of hard kites, depending on the particle shape, can stabilize isotropic, nematic, tetratic and triatic phases. Different phase diagrams are calculated, including those of rhombuses, and kites with two of their equal interior angles fixed to $90^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ and $75^{\circ}$. Kites with one of their unequal angles fixed to $72^{\circ}$, which have been recently studied via Monte Carlo simulations, are also considered. We find that rhombuses and kites with two equal right angles and not too large anisometry stabilise the tetratic phase but the latter stabilize it to a much higher degree. By contrast, kites with two equal interior angles fixed to $60^{\circ}$ stabilize the triatic phase to some extent, although it is very sensitive to changes in particle geometry. Kites with the two equal interior angles fixed to $75^{\circ}$ have a phase diagram with both tetratic and triatic phases, but we show the nonexistence of a particle shape for which both phases are stable at different densities. Finally the success of the new theory in the description of orientational order in kites is shown by comparing with Monte Carlo simulations for the case where one of the unequal angles is fixed to $72^{\circ}$. Liquid-crystalline ordering in vertically vibrated granular monolayers confined in annuli of different sizes is examined. The annuli consist of circular cavities with a central circular obstruction. In the absence of the central obstruction cylinders of low aspect-ratio exhibit tetratic order, except for the existence of four defects which restore the symmetry broken by the circular confinement. This behaviour is demanded by topology in systems with strong anchoring properties at the surface. By contrast, topology dictates that the annular geometry is compatible with a distorted tetratic phase without point defects. However, the effect of restricted geometry and limited size on phases possessing finite anchoring energy at the wall and elastic stiffness leads to different configurations, showing finite ordered regions separated by domain walls. We argue that highly packed nonequilibrium vibrated granular monolayers respond to geometrical frustration and extreme confinement as corresponding equilibrium systems of particles do, and that the former can be analysed in terms of surface free energies, elastic distortions and defects, much as equilibrium liquid crystals. Therefore, selective confinement of vertically-vibrated monolayers of rods could be used with advantage as a new tool to study the creation and dynamics of various types of defects in ordered systems., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Using the Fundamental-Measure Density Functional Theory, we have studied theoretically the phase behavior of extremely confined mixtures of parallel hard squares in slit geometry. The pore width is chosen such that configurations consisting of two consecutive big squares, or three small squares, in the transverse direction, perpendicular to the walls, are forbidden. We analyzed two different mixtures with edge-lengths of species selected so as to allow or forbid one big plus one small square to fit into the channel. For the first mixture we obtained first-order transitions between symmetric and asymmetric packings of particles: small and big squares are preferentially adsorbed at different walls. Asymmetric configurations are shown to lead to more efficient packing at finite pressures. We argue that the stability region of the asymmetric phase in the pressure-composition plane is bounded so that the symmetric phase is stable at low and very high pressure. For the second mixture, we observe strong demixing between phases which are rich in different species. Demixing occurs in the transverse direction, i.e. the dividing interface is perpendicular to the walls, and phases exhibit symmetric density profiles. The possible experimental realization of this behaviour (which in practical terms is precluded by jamming) in strictly two-dimensional systems is discussed. Finally the phase behavior of a mixture with periodic boundary conditions is analyzed and the differences and similarities between the latter and the confined system are discussed. We claim that, although exact calculations discard the existence of true phase transitions in $1+\epsilon$-dimensional systems, Density Functional Theory is still successful to describe packing properties of large clusters of particles., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures

We analyse liquid-crystalline ordering in vertically vibrated monolayers of cylinders confined in a circular cavity. Short cylinders form tetratic arrangements with C$_4$ symmetry. This symmetry, which is incompatible with the geometry of the cavity, is restored by the presence of four point defects with total topological charge $+4$. Equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations predict the same structure. A new method to measure the elastic properties of the tetratic medium is developed which exploits the clear similarities between the vibrated dissipative system and the thermal equilibrium system. Our observations open up a new avenue to investigate the formation of defects in response to boundary conditions, an issue which is very difficult to realize in colloidal or molecular systems., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The phase behaviour and structural properties of a monolayer of hard particles is examined in such a confinement, where the adsorbed particles are constrained to the surface of a narrow hard cylindrical pore. The diameter of the pore is chosen such that only first and second neighbour interactions occur between the hard particles. The transfer operator method of Percus and Zhang [Mol. Phys., 69, 347 (1990)] is reformulated to obtain information about the structure of the monolayer. We have found that a true phase transition is not possible in the examined range of pore diameters. The monolayer of hard spheres undergoes a structural change from fluid-like order to a zigzag-like solid one with increasing surface density. The case of hard cylinders is different in the sense that a layering takes place continuously between a low density one-row and a high density two-row monolayer. Our results reveal a clear discrepancy with classical density functional theories, which do not distinguish smectic-like ordering in bulk from that in narrow periodic pores.

We formulate the scaled particle theory for a general mixture of hard isosceles triangles and calculate different phase diagrams for the one-component fluid and for certain binary mixtures. The fluid of hard triangles exhibits a complex phase behavior: (i) the presence of a triatic phase with sixfold symmetry, (ii) the isotropic-uniaxial nematic transition is of first order for certain ranges of aspect ratios, and (iii) the one-component system exhibits nematic-nematic transitions ending in critical points. We found the triatic phase to be stable not only for equilateral triangles but also for triangles of similar aspect ratios. We focus the study of binary mixtures on the case of symmetric mixtures: equal particle areas with aspect ratios ($\kappa_i$) symmetric with respect to the equilateral one: $\kappa_1\kappa_2=3$. For these mixtures we found, aside from first-order isotropic-nematic and nematic-nematic transitions (the latter ending in a critical point): (i) A region of triatic phase stability even for mixtures made of particles that do not form this phase at the one-component limit, and (ii) the presence of a Landau point at which two isotropic-nematic first-order transitions and a nematic-nematic demixing transition coalesce. We use the Dynamic Density-Functional Formalism and the Fundamental Measure Theory as applied to a fluid of parallel hard squares to study the dynamics of heterogeneous growth of non-uniform phases with columnar and crystalline symmetries. The hard squares are (i) confined between soft repulsive walls with square symmetry, or (ii) exposed to external potentials that mimic the presence of obstacles with circular, square, rectangular or triangular symmetries. For the first case the final equilibrium profile of a well commensurated cavity consists of a crystal phase with highly localized particles in concentric square layers at the nodes of a slightly deformed square lattice. We characterize the growth dynamics of the crystal phase by quantifying the interlayer and intralayer fluxes and the non-monotonicity of the former, the saturation time, and other dynamical quantities. The interlayer fluxes are much more monotonic in time, and dominant for poorly commensurated cavities, while the opposite is true for well commensurated cells: although smaller, the time evolution of interlayer fluxes are much more complex, presenting strongly damped oscillations which dramatically increase the saturation time. We also study how the geometry of the obstacle affects the symmetry of the final equilibrium non-uniform phase (columnar vs. crystal). For obstacles with fourfold symmetry, (circular and square) the crystal is more stable, while the columnar phase is stabilized for obstacles without this symmetry (rectangular or triangular). We find that, in general, density waves of columnar symmetry grow from the obstacle. However, additional particle localization along the wavefronts gives rise to a crystalline structure which is conserved for circular and square obstacles, but destroyed for the other two obstacles where columnar symmetry is restored., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures

Using transfer operator and fundamental measure theories, we examine the structural and thermodynamic properties of hard rectangles confined between two parallel hard walls. The side lengths of the rectangle ($L$ and $D$, $L>D$) and the pore width ($H$) are chosen such that maximum two layers are allowed to form in planar order ($L$ is parallel to the wall), while only one in homeotropic order ($D$ is parallel to the wall). We observe three different structures: (i) a low density fluid phase with parallel alignment to the wall, (ii) an intermediate and high density fluid phase with two layers and planar ordering and (iii) a dense single fluid layer with homeotropic ordering. The appearance of these phases and the change in the ordering direction with density is a consequence of the varying close packing structures with $L$ and $H$. Interestingly, even three different structures can be observed with increasing density if $L$ is close to $H$.

We used the Density Functional formalism, in particular the Scaled Particle Theory, applied to a length-polydisperse hard-rectangular fluid to study its phase behavior as a function of the mean particle aspect ratio ($\kappa_0$) and polydispersity ($\Delta_0$). The numerical solutions of the coexistence equations were calculated by transforming the original problem with infinite degrees of freedoms to a finite set of equations for the amplitudes of the Fourier expansion of the moments of the density profiles. We divided the study into two parts: The first one is devoted to the calculation of the phase diagrams in the packing fraction ($\eta_0$)- $\kappa_0$ plane for a fixed $\Delta_0$ and selecting parent distribution functions with exponential (the Schulz distribution) or Gaussian decays. In the second part we study the phase behavior in the $\eta_0$-$\Delta_0$ plane for fixed $\kappa_0$ while $\Delta_0$ is changed. We characterize in detail the orientational ordering of particles and the fractionation of different species between the coexisting phases. Also we study the character (second vs. first order) of the Isotropic-Nematic phase transition as a function of polydispersity. We particularly focused on the stability of the Tetratic phase as a function of $\kappa_0$ and $\Delta_0$. The Isotropic-Nematic transition becomes strongly of first order when polydispersity is increased: the coexisting gap widens and the location of the tricritical point moves to higher values of $\kappa_0$ while the Tetratic phase is slightly destabilized with respect to the Nematic one. The results obtained here can be tested in experiments on shaken monolayers of granular rods., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

We investigate the ordering properties of vertically-vibrated monolayers of granular cylinders in a circular container at high packing fraction. In line with previous works by other groups, we identify liquid-crystalline ordering behaviour similar to that of two-dimensional hard rectangular particles subject to thermal equilibrium fluctuations. However, due to dissipation, there is a much stronger tendency for particles to cluster into parallel arrangements in the granular system. These clusters behave as a polydisperse mixture of long life-time `superparticles', and some aspects of the system behaviour can be understood by applying mean-field theories for equilibrium hard rectangles, based on two-body correlations, to these `superparticles'. Many other features of the granular system are different: (i) For small particle length-to-breadth ratio $\kappa$, we identify tetratic ordering at moderate packing fractions and smectic fluctuations at higher packing fractions, with no sharp transition between the two states. Both types of ordering can be explained in terms of clustering. (ii) For large $\kappa$, strong clustering precludes the stabilisation of a uniaxial nematic state, and the system exhibits a mixture of randomly-oriented clusters which, as packing fraction is increased, develops into states with smectic fluctuations, again through a diffuse transition. (iii) Vorticity excitations of the velocity field compete with smectic ordering, causing dynamic fluctuations and the absence of steady states at high densities; the tetratic state, by contrast, is very stiff against vorticity, and long-standing steady states, spatially and orientationally homogeneous except for four symmetrical defects located close to the wall, can be observed., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures

We theoretically study the phase behaviour of monolayers of hard rod-plate mixtures using a fundamental-measure density functional in the restricted-orientation (Zwanzig) approximation. We consider both species to be subject to an attractive potential proportional to the particle contact area on the surface and with adsorption strengths that depend on the species type. Particles have board-like shape, with sizes chosen using a symmetry criterion: same volume and same aspect ratio $\kappa$. Phase diagrams were calculated for $\kappa=10$, 20 and 40 and different values of adsorption strengths. For small adsorption strengths the mixtures exhibit a second-order uniaxial nematic-biaxial nematic transition for molar fraction of rods $0\leq x\lesssim 0.9$. In the uniaxial nematic phase the particle axes of rods and plates are aligned perpendicular and parallel to the monolayer, respectively. At the transition, the orientational symmetry of the plate axes is broken, and they orient parallel to a director lying on the surface. For large and equal adsorption strengths the mixture demixes at low pressures into a uniaxial nematic phase, rich in plates, and a biaxial nematic phase, rich in rods. This demixing is located between two tricritical points. Also, at higher pressures and in the plate-rich part of the phase diagram, the system exhibits a strong first-order uniaxial nematic-biaxial nematic phase transition with a large density coexistence gap. When rod adsorption is considerably large while that of plates is small, the transition to the biaxial nematic phase is always of second order. At very high pressures the mixture can effectively be identified as a two-dimensional mixture of squares and rectangles which again demixes above a certain critical point. We study a fluid of two-dimensional parallel hard squares in bulk and under confinement in channels, with the aim of evaluating the performance of Fundamental-Measure Theory (FMT). To this purpose, we first analyse the phase behaviour of the bulk system using FMT and Percus-Yevick theory, and compare the results with MD and MC simulations. In a second step, we study the confined system and check the results against those obtained from Transfer Matrix Method and from our own Monte Carlo simulations. Squares are confined to channels with parallel walls at angles of 0$^{\circ}$ or 45$^{\circ}$ relative to the diagonals of the parallel hard squares, respectively, which allows for an assessment of the effect of the external-potential symmetry on the fluid structural properties. In general FMT overestimates bulk correlations, predicting the existence of a columnar phase (absent in simulations) prior to crystallisation. The equation of state predicted by FMT compares well with simulations, although the PY approach with the virial route is better in some range of packing fractions. The FMT is highly accurate for the structure and correlations of the confined fluid due to the dimensional crossover property fulfilled by the theory. Both density profiles and equations of state of the confined system are accurately predicted by the theory. The effect of out-of-plane orientational freedom on the orientational ordering properties of a monolayer of hard ellipsoids is studied using Parsons-Lee scaling approach and replica exchange Monte Carlo computer simulation. Prolate and oblate ellipsoids exhibit very different ordering properties, namely, the axes of revolution of prolate particles tend to lean out, while those of oblate ones prefer to lean into the confining plane. The driving mechanism of this is that the particles try to maximize the available free area on the confining surface, which can be achieved by minimizing the cross section areas of the particles with the plane. In the lack out-of-plane orientational freedom the monolayer of prolate particles is identical to a two-dimensional hard ellipse system, which undergoes an isotropic-nematic ordering transition with increasing density. With gradually switching on the out-of-plane orientational freedom the prolate particles lean out from the confining plane and a destabilisation of the in-plane isotropic-nematic phase transition is observed. The system of oblate particles behaves oppositely to that of prolates. It corresponds to a two-dimensional system of hard disks in the lack of out-of-plane freedom, while it behaves similar to that of hard ellipses in the freely rotating case., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

We consider a Lebwohl-Lasher model of chiral particles confined in a planar cell (slit pore) with different boundary conditions, and solve it using mean-field theory. The phase behaviour of the system with respect to temperature and pore width is studied. Two phenomena are observed: (i) an isotropic-cholesteric transition which exhibits an oscillatory structure with respect to pore width, and (ii) an infinite set of winding transitions caused by commensuration effects between cholesteric pitch and pore width. The latter transitions have been predicted and analysed by other authors for cholesterics confined in a fixed pore and subject to an external field promoting the uniaxial nematic phase; here we induce winding transitions solely from geometry by changing the pore width at zero external field (a setup recently explored in Atomic-Force Microscopy experiments). In contrast with previous studies, we obtain the phase diagrams in the temperature vs pore width plane, including the isotropic-cholesteric transition, the winding transitions and their complex relationship. In particular, the structure of winding transitions terminates at the capillary isotropic-cholesteric transition via triple points where the confined isotropic phase coexists with two cholesterics with different helix indices. We extend our previous work on monolayers of uniaxial particles [J. Chem. Phys. 140, 204906 (2014)] to study the effect of particle biaxiality on the phase behavior of liquid-crystal monolayers. Particles are modelled as board-like hard bodies with three different edge lengths $\sigma_1\geq\sigma_2\geq\sigma_3$, and use is made of the restricted-orientation approximation (Zwanzig model). A density-functional formalism based on the fundamental-measure theory is used to calculate phase diagrams for a wide range of values of the largest aspect ratio ($\kappa_1=\sigma_1/\sigma_3\in[1,100]$). We find that particle biaxiality in general destabilizes the biaxial nematic phase already present in monolayers of uniaxial particles. While plate-like particles exhibit strong biaxial ordering, rod-like ones with $\kappa_1>21.34$ exhibit reentrant uniaxial and biaxial phases. As particle geometry is changed from uniaxial- to increasingly biaxial-rod-like, the region of biaxiality is reduced, eventually ending in a critical-end point. For $\kappa_1>60$, a density gap opens up in which the biaxial nematic phase is stable for any particle biaxiality. Regions of the phase diagram where packing-fraction inversion occurs (i.e. packing fraction is a decreasing function of density) are found. Hard models for particle interactions have played a crucial role in the understanding of the structure of condensed matter. In particular, they help to explain the formation of oriented phases in liquids made of anisotropic molecules or colloidal particles, and continue to be of great interest in the formulation of theories for liquids in bulk, near interfaces and in biophysical environments. Hard models of anisotropic particles give rise to complex phase diagrams, including uniaxial and biaxial nematic phases, discotic phases, and spatially ordered phases such as smectic, columnar or crystal. Also, their mixtures exhibit additional interesting behaviours where demixing competes with orientational order. Here we review the different models of hard particles used in the theory of bulk anisotropic liquids, leaving aside interfacial properties, and discuss the associated theoretical approaches and computer simulations, focusing on applications in equilibrium situations. The latter include one-component bulk fluids, mixtures and polydisperse fluids, both in two and three dimensions, and emphasis is put on liquid-crystal phase transitions and complex phase behaviour in general., Comment: Accepted for publication in J. Orientational and positional ordering properties of liquid crystal monolayers are examined by means of Fundamental-Measure Density Functional Theory. Particles forming the monolayer are modeled as hard parallelepipeds of square section of size $\sigma$ and length $L$. The particle centers of mass are restricted to a flat surface and three possible and mutually perpendicular orientations (in-plane and along the layer normal) of their uniaxial axes are allowed. We find that the structure of the monolayer depends strongly on particle shape and density. In the case of rod-like shapes, particles align along the layer normal in order to achieve the lowest possible occupied area per particle. This phase is a uniaxial nematic even at very low densities. In contrast, for plate-like particles, the lowest occupied area can be achieved by random in-plane ordering in the monolayer, i.e. planar nematic ordering takes place even at vanishing densities. It is found that the random in-plane ordering is not favorable at higher densities and the system undergoes an in-plane ordering transition forming a biaxial nematic phase or crystallizes. For certain values of the aspect ratio, the uniaxial-biaxial nematic phase transition is observed for both rod-like and plate-like shapes. The stability region of the biaxial nematic phase enhances with decreasing aspect ratios for plate-like particles, while the rod-like particles exhibit a reentrant phenomenon, i.e. a sequence of uniaxial-biaxial-uniaxial nematic ordering with increasing density if the aspect ratio is larger than 21.34. In addition to this, packing fraction inversion is observed with increasing surface pressure due to the alignment along the layers normal. At very high densities the nematic phase destabilizes to a nonuniform phases (columnar, smectic or crystalline phases) for both shapes., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

The phase behavior of a model suspension of colloidal polydisperse platelets is studied using density-functional theory. Platelets are modelled as parallel rectangular prisms of square section $l$ and height $h$, with length and height distributions given by different polydispersities $\delta_l$ and $\delta_h$. We obtain the phase behavior of the model, including nematic, smectic and columnar phases and its dependence with the two polydispersities $\delta_l$ and $\delta_h$. When $\delta_l>\delta_h$ we observe that the smectic phase stabilises first with respect to the columnar. If $\delta_h>\delta_l$ we observe the opposite behavior. Other more complicated cases occur, e.g. the smectic stabilises from the nematic first but then exists a first-order transition to the columnar phase. Our model assumes plate-rod symmetry, but the regions of stability of smectic and columnar phases are non-symmetric in the $\delta_l-\delta_h$ plane due to the different dimensionality of ordering in the two phases. The effect of cylindrical confinement on the phase behaviour of a system of parallel hard rods is studied using Onsager's second virial theory. The hard rods are represented as hard cylinders of diameter $D$ and length $L$, while the cylindrical pore is infinite with diameter $W$. The interaction between the wall and the rods is hard repulsive, and it is assumed that molecules are parallel to the surface of the pore (planar anchoring). In very narrow pores ($D100 D$, results for bulk and confined fluids agree well due to the short range effect of the wall ($\sim 3-4D$)., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Using density-functional theory in the restricted-orientation approximation, we analyse the liquid-crystal patterns and phase behaviour of a fluid of hard rectangular particles confined in a two-dimensional square nanocavity of side length $H$ composed of hard inner walls. Patterning in the cavity is governed by surface-induced order, capillary and frustration effects, and depends on the relative values of particle aspect ratio $\kappa\equiv L/\sigma$, with $L$ the length and $\sigma$ the width of the rectangles ($L\ge\sigma$), and cavity size $H$. Ordering may be very different from bulk ($H\to\infty$) behaviour when $H$ is a few times the particle length $L$ (nanocavity). Bulk and confinement properties are obtained for the cases $\kappa=1$, 3 and 6. In the confined fluid surface-induced frustration leads to four-fold symmetry breaking in all phases (which become two-fold symmetric). Since no director distorsion can arise in our model by construction, frustration in the director orientation is relaxed by the creation of domain walls (where the director changes by $90^{\circ}$); this configuration is necessary to stabilise periodic phases. For $\kappa=1$ the crystal becomes stable with commensuration transitions taking place as $H$ is varied. In the case $\kappa=3$ the commensuration transitions involve columnar phases with different number of columns. Finally, in the case $\kappa=6$, the high-density region of the phase diagram is dominated by commensuration transitions between smectic structures; at lower densities there is a symmetry-breaking isotropic $\to$ nematic transition exhibiting non-monotonic behaviour with cavity size., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures

We derive, from the dimensional cross-over criterion, a fundamental-measure density functional for parallel hard curved rectangles moving on a cylindrical surface. We derive it from the density functional of circular arcs of length $\sigma$ with centers of mass located on an external circumference of radius $R_0$. The latter functional in turns is obtained from the corresponding 2D functional for a fluid of hard discs of radius $R$ on a flat surface with centers of mass confined onto a circumference of radius $R_0$. Thus the curved length of closest approach between two centers of mass of hard discs on this circumference is $\sigma=2R_0\sin^{-1}(R/R_0)$, the length of the circular arcs. From the density functional of circular arcs, and by applying a dimensional expansion procedure to the spatial dimension orthogonal to the plane of the circumference, we finally obtain the density functional of curved rectangles of edge-lengths $\sigma$ and $L$. The DF for curved rectangles can also be obtained by fixing the centers of mass of parallel hard cylinders of radius $R$ and length $L$ on a cylindrical surface of radius $R_0$. The phase behavior of a fluid of aligned curved rectangles is obtained by calculating the free-energy branches of smectic, columnar and crystalline phases for different values of the ratio $R_0/R$ in the range $1

Two-dimensional nematics possess peculiar properties that have been studied recently using computer simulation and various theoretical models. Here we review our own contribution to the field using density-functional theory, and present some preliminary simulation results on confined two-dimensional nematics. First we discuss the possible stable bulk phases and phase diagrams and the relation between phases and particle geometry. We then explore the adsorption properties on a single substrate and the confinement effects that arise when the fluid is confined between parallel walls. Next, confinement in circular cavities is presented; this geometry allows us to measure some properties of the simplest defects that arise in two-dimensional nematics. Finally, preliminary Monte Carlo simulation results of confined nematics in circular geometry are shown., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

We present a scaled particle density functional study of two-dimensional binary mixtures of hard convex particles with one or both species being ellipses. In particular, we divide our study into two parts. The first part is devoted to the calculation of phase diagrams of mixtures with the same elliptical shapes, but with (i) different aspect ratios and equal particle areas, (ii) equal aspect ratios and different particle areas and (iii) with the former and the later being different. In the second study we obtain the phase diagrams corresponding to crossed-mixtures of particles with species having elliptical and rectangular shapes. We compare the phase diagram topologies and explain their main features from the entropic nature of particle interactions directly related to the anisotropies, areas, and shapes of species. The results obtained can be corroborated by experiments on granular rods where the entropic forces are very important in the stabilization of liquid-crystal textures at the stationary states., Comment: Preprint format. 22 pages and 10 figures

We use density-functional theory, of the fundamental-measure type, to study the relative stability of the biaxial nematic phase, with respect to non-uniform phases such as smectic and columnar, in fluids made of hard board-like particles with sizes $\sigma_1>\sigma_2>\sigma_3$. A restricted-orientation (Zwanzig) approximation is adopted. Varying the ratio $\kappa_1=\sigma_1/\sigma_2$ while keeping $\kappa_2=\sigma_2/\sigma_3$, we predict phase diagrams for various values of $\kappa_2$ which include all the uniform phases: isotropic, uniaxial rod- and plate-like nematics, and biaxial nematic. In addition, spinodal instabilities of the uniform phases with respect to fluctuations of the smectic, columnar and plastic-solid type, are obtained. In agreement with recent experiments, we find that the biaxial nematic phase begins to be stable for $\kappa_2\simeq 2.5$. Also, as predicted by previous theories and simulations on biaxial hard particles, we obtain a region of biaxility centred on $\kappa_1\approx\kappa_2$ which widens as $\kappa_2$ increases. For $\kappa_2\agt 5$ the region $\kappa_2\approx\kappa_1$ of the packing-fraction vs. $\kappa_1$ phase diagrams exhibits interesting topologies which change qualitatively with $\kappa_2$. We have found that an increasing biaxial shape anisotropy favours the formation of the biaxial nematic phase. Our study is the first to apply FMT theory to biaxial particles and, therefore, it goes beyond the second-order virial approximation. Our prediction that the phase diagram must be asymmetric is a genuine result of the present approach, which is not accounted for by previous studies based on second-order theories., Comment: Preprint format. 18 pages, 5 figures

We discuss theoretically, using density-functional theory, the phase stability of nematic and smectic ordering in a suspension of platelets of the same thickness but with a high polydispersity in diameter, and study the influence of polydispersity on this stability. The platelets are assumed to interact like hard objects, but additional soft attractive and repulsive interactions, meant to represent the effect of depletion interactions are also considered. The aspect (diameter to thickness) ratio is taken to be very high, in order to model solutions of mineral platelets recently explored experimentally. In this regime a high degree of orientational ordering occurs; therefore the model platelets can be taken as completely parallel and are amenable to analysis via a fundamental-measure theory. Our focus is on the nematic vs. smectic phase interplay, since a high degree of polydispersity in diameter suppresses the formation of the columnar phase. When interactions are purely hard, the theory predicts a continuous nematic-to-smectic transition, regardless of the degree of diameter polydispersity. However, polydispersity enhances the stability of the smectic phase against the nematic phase. Predictions for the case where an additional soft interaction is added are obtained using mean-field perturbation theory. In the case of the one-component fluid, the transition remains continuous for repulsive forces, and the smectic phase becomes more stable as the range of the interaction is decreased. The opposite behaviour with respect to the range is observed for attractive forces, and in fact the transition becomes of first order below a tricritical point. Also, for attractive interactions, nematic demixing appears, with an associated critical point. It is well known that the increase of the spatial dimensionality enhances the fluid-fluid demixing of a binary mixture of hard hyperspheres, i.e. the demixing occurs for lower mixture size asymmetry as compared to the three-dimensional case. However, according to simulations, in the latter dimension the fluid-fluid demixing is metastable with respect to the fluid-solid transition. According to the results obtained from approximations to the equation of state of hard hyperspheres in higher dimensions, the fluid-fluid demixing might becomes stable for high enough dimension. However, this conclusion is rather speculative since none of the above works have taken into account the stability of the crystalline phase (nor by a minimization of a given density functional, neither spinodal calculations or MC simulations). Of course, the lack of results is justified by the difficulty for performing density functional calculations or simulations in high dimensions and, in particular, for highly asymmetric binary mixtures. In the present work, we will take advantage of a well tested theoretical tool, namely the fundamental measure density functional theory for parallel hard hypercubes (in the continuum and in the hypercubic lattice). With this, we have calculated the fluid-fluid and fluid-solid spinodals for different spatial dimensions. We have obtained, no matter of the dimensionality, the mixture size asymmetry nor the polydispersity (included as a bimodal distribution function centered around the asymmetric edge-lengths), that the fluid-fluid critical point is always located above the fluid-solid spinodal. In conclusion, these results point to the existence of demixing between at least one solid phase rich in large particles and one fluid phase rich in small ones, preempting a fluid-fluid demixing, independently of the spatial dimension or the polydispersity., Comment: 18 pages, 1 table, 6 figures. We analyse a binary mixture of colloidal parallel hard cylindrical particles with identical diameters but dissimilar lengths $L_1$ and $L_2$, with $s=L_2/L_1=3$, confined by two parallel hard walls in a planar slit-pore geometry, using a fundamental--measure density functional theory. This model presents nematic (N) and two types of smectic (S) phases, with first- and second-order N-S bulk transitions and S-S demixing, and surface behaviour at a single hard wall which includes complete wetting by the S phase mediated (or not) by an infinite number of surface-induced layering (SIL) transitions. In the present paper the effects of confinement on this model colloidal fluid mixture are studied. Confinement brings about profound changes in the phase diagram, resulting from competition between the three relevant length scales: pore width $h$, smectic period $d$ and length ratio $s$. Four main effects are identified: (i) Second-order bulk N-S transitions are suppressed. (ii) Demixing transitions are weakly affected, with small shifts in the $\mu_1-\mu_2$ (chemical potentials) plane. (iii) Confinement-induced layering (CIL) transitions occurring in the two confined one-component fluids in some cases merge with the demixing transition. (iv) Surface-induced layering (SIL) transitions occurring at a single surface as coexistence conditions are approached are also shifted in the confined fluid. Trends with pore size are analysed by means of complete $\mu_1-\mu_2$ and $p-\bar{x}$ (pressure-mean pore composition) phase diagrams for particular values of pore size. This work, which is the first one to address the behaviour of liquid-crystalline mixtures under confinement, could be relevant as a first step to understand self-assembling properties of mixtures of metallic nanoparticles under external fields in restricted geometry., Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures.

The effect of confinement on the phase behaviour and structure of fluids made of biaxial hard particles (cuboids) is examined theoretically by means of Onsager second-order virial theory in the limit where the long particle axes are frozen in a mutually parallel configuration. Confinement is induced by two parallel planar hard walls (slit-pore geometry), with particle long axes perpendicular to the walls (perfect homeotropic anchoring). In bulk, a continuous nematic-to-smectic transition takes place, while shape anisotropy in the (rectangular) particle cross section induces biaxial ordering. As a consequence, four bulk phases, uniaxial and biaxial nematic and smectic phases, can be stabilised as the cross-sectional aspect ratio is varied. On confining the fluid, the nematic-to-smectic transition is suppressed, and either uniaxial or biaxial phases, separated by a continuous trasition, can be present. Smectic ordering develops continuously from the walls for increasing particle concentration (in agreement with the supression of nematic-smectic second order transition at confinement), but first-order layering transitions, involving structures with n and n+1 layers, arise in the confined fluid at high concentration. Competition between layering and uniaxial-biaxial ordering leads to three different types of layering transitions, at which the two coexisting structures can be both uniaxial, one uniaxial and another biaxial, or both biaxial. Also, the interplay between molecular biaxiality and wall interactions is very subtle: while the hard wall disfavours the formation of the biaxial phase, biaxiality is against the layering transitions, as we have shown by comparing the confined phase behaviour of cylinders and cuboids. The surface phase behavior of binary mixtures of colloidal hard rods in contact with a solid substrate (hard wall) is studied, with special emphasis on the region of the phase diagram that includes the smectic A phase. The colloidal rods are modelled as hard cylinders of the same diameter and different lengths, in the approximation of perfect alignment. A fundamental--measure density functional is used to obtain equilibrium density profiles and thermodynamic properties such as surface tensions and adsorption coefficients. The bulk phase diagram exhibits nematic-smectic and smectic-smectic demixing, with smectic phases having different compositions; in some cases they are microfractionated. The calculated surface phase diagram of the wall-nematic interface shows a very rich phase behavior, including layering transitions and complete wetting at high pressures, whereby an infinitely thick smectic film grows at the wall via an infinite sequence of stepwise first--order layering transitions. For lower pressures complete wetting also obtains, but here the smectic film grows in a continuous fashion. Finally, at very low pressures, the wall-nematic interface exhibits critical adsorption by the smectic phase, due to the second-order character of the bulk nematic-smectic transition., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures. We report the nematic and smectic ordering in a new aqueous suspension of monolayer $\alpha$-Zirconium phosphate platelets possessing a high polydispersity in diameter but uniform thickness. We observe an isotropic--nematic transition as the platelet volume fraction increases, followed by the formation of a smectic, an elusive phase that has been rarely seen in discotic liquid crystals. The smectic phase is characterized by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and optical microscopy. We apply a recently proposed density functional for mixtures of parallel hard cylinders, based on Rosenfeld's fundamental measure theory, to study the effect of length-polydispersity on the relative stability between the smectic and columnar liquid crystal phases.To this purpose we derive from this functional an expression for the direct correlation function and use it to perform a bifurcation analysis. We compare the results with those obtained with a second and a third virial approximation of this function. All three approximations lead to the same conclusion: there is a terminal polydispersity beyond which the smectic phase is less stable than the columnar phase. This result is in agreement with previous Monte Carlo simulations conducted on a freely rotating length-polydisperse hard spherocylinder fluid, although the theories always overestimate the terminal polydispersity because the nematic-columnar phase transition is first order and exhibits a wide coexistence gap. Both, the fundamental-measure functional and the third virial approximation, predict a metastable nematic-nematic demixing. Conversely, according to second virial approximation this demixing might be stable at high values of the polydispersity, something that is observed neither in simulations nor in experiments. The results of the fundamental-measure functional are quantitatively superior to those obtained from the other two approximations. We show that the relative stability of the nematic tetratic phase with respect to the usual uniaxial nematic phase can be greatly enhanced by clustering effects. Two--dimensional rectangles of aspect ratio $\kappa$ interacting via hard interactions are considered, and the stability of the two nematic phases (uniaxial and tetratic) is examined using an extended scaled--particle theory applied to a polydispersed fluid mixture of $n$ species. Here the $i$--th species is associated with clusters of $i$ rectangles, with clusters defined as stacks of rectangles containing approximately parallel rectangles, with frozen internal degrees of freedom. The theory assumes an exponential cluster size distribution (an assumption fully supported by Monte Carlo simulations and by a simple chemical--reaction model), with fixed value of the second moment. The corresponding area distribution presents a shoulder, and sometimes even a well-defined peak, at cluster sizes approximately corresponding to square shape (i.e. $i\simeq\kappa$), meaning that square clusters have a dominant contribution to the free energy of the hard--rectangle fluid. The theory predicts an enhanced region of stability of the tetratic phase with respect to the standard scaled--particle theory, much closer to simulation and to experimental results, demonstrating the importance of clustering in this fluid., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

We have calculated the phase diagrams of one--component fluids made of five types of biaxial particles differing in their cross sections. The orientation of the principal particle axis is fixed in space, while the second axis is allowed to freely rotate. We have constructed a free-energy density functional based on fundamental--measure theory to study the relative stability of nematic and smectic phases with uniaxial, biaxial and tetratic symmetries. Minimization of the density functional allows us to study the phase behavior of the biaxial particles as a function of the cross-section geometry. For low values of the aspect ratio of the particle cross section, we obtain smectic phases with tetratic symmetry, although metastable with respect to the crystal, as our MC simulation study indicates. For large particle aspect ratios and in analogy with previous work [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 5, 3700 (2003)], we have found a four--phase point where four spinodals, corresponding to phase transitions between phases with different symmetries, meet together. The location of this point is quite sensitive to particle cross section, which suggests that optimizing the particle geometry could be a useful criterion in the design of colloidal particles that can exhibit an increased stability of the biaxial nematic phase with respect to other competing phases with spatial order., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, submitted to PRE

We test the performance of a recently proposed fundamental measure density functional of aligned hard cylinders by calculating the phase diagram of a monodisperse fluid of these particles. We consider all possible liquid crystalline symmetries, namely nematic, smectic and columnar, as well as the crystalline phase. For this purpose we introduce a Gaussian parameterization of the density profile and use it to minimize numerically the functional. We also determine, from the analytic expression for the structure factor of the uniform fluid, the bifurcation points from the nematic to the smectic and columnar phases. The equation of state, as obtained from functional minimization, is compared to the available Monte Carlo simulation. The agreement is is very good, nearly perfect in the description of the inhomogeneous phases. The columnar phase is found to be metastable with respect to the smectic or crystal phases, its free energy though being very close to that of the stable phases. This result justifies the observation of a window of stability of the columnar phase in some simulations, which disappears as the size of the system increases. The only important deviation between theory and simulations shows up in the location of the nematic-smectic transition. This is the common drawback of any fundamental measure functional of describing the uniform phase just with the accuracy of scaled particle theory., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

We obtain a fundamental measure density functional for mixtures of parallel hard cylinders. To this purpose we first generalize to multicomponent mixtures the fundamental measure functional proposed by Tarazona and Rosenfeld for a one-component hard disk fluid, through a method alternative to the cavity formalism of these authors. We show the equivalence of both methods when applied to two-dimensional fluids. The density functional so obtained reduces to the exact density functional for one-dimensional mixtures of hard rods when applied to one-dimensional profiles. In a second step we apply an idea put forward some time ago by two of us, based again on a dimensional reduction of the system, and derive a density functional for mixtures of parallel hard cylinders. We explore some features of this functional by determining the fluid-fluid demixing spinodals for a binary mixture of cylinders with the same volume, and by calculating the direct correlation functions., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

In this article we consider systems of parallel hard {\it superellipsoids}, which can be viewed as a possible interpolation between ellipsoids of revolution and cylinders. Superellipsoids are characterized by an aspect ratio and an exponent $\alpha$ (shape parameter) which takes care of the geometry, with $\alpha=1$ corresponding to ellipsoids of revolution, while $\alpha=\infty$ is the limit of cylinders. It is well known that, while hard parallel cylinders exhibit nematic, smectic, and solid phases, hard parallel ellipsoids do not stabilize the smectic phase, the nematic phase transforming directly into a solid as density is increased. We use computer simulation to find evidence that for $\alpha\ge\alpha_c$, where $\alpha_c$ is a critical value which the simulations estimate to be in the interval 1.2--1.3, the smectic phase is stabilized. This is surprisingly close to the ellipsoidal case. In addition, we use a density-functional approach, based on the Parsons--Lee approximation, to describe smectic and columnar ordering. In combination with a free--volume theory for the crystalline phase, a theoretical phase diagram is predicted. While some qualitative features, such as the enhancement of smectic stability for increasing $\alpha$, and the probable absence of a stable columnar phase, are correct, the precise location of coexistence densities are quantitatively incorrect., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We consider binary mixtures of soft repulsive spherical particles and calculate the depletion interaction between two big spheres mediated by the fluid of small spheres, using different theoretical and simulation methods. The validity of the theoretical approach, a virial expansion in terms of the density of the small spheres, is checked against simulation results. Attention is given to the approach toward the hard-sphere limit, and to the effect of density and temperature on the strength of the depletion potential. Our results indicate, surprisingly, that even a modest degree of softness in the pair potential governing the direct interactions between the particles may lead to a significantly more attractive total effective potential for the big spheres than in the hard-sphere case. This might lead to significant differences in phase behavior, structure and dynamics of a binary mixture of soft repulsive spheres. In particular, a perturbative scheme is applied to predict the phase diagram of an effective system of big spheres interacting via depletion forces for a size ratio of small and big spheres of 0.2; this diagram includes the usual fluid-solid transition but, in the soft-sphere case, the metastable fluid-fluid transition, which is probably absent in hard-sphere mixtures, is close to being stable with respect to direct fluid-solid coexistence. From these results the interesting possibility arises that, for sufficiently soft repulsive particles, this phase transition could become stable. In this article we calculate the surface phase diagram of a two-dimensional hard-rod fluid confined between two hard lines. In a first stage we study the semi-infinite system consisting of an isotropic fluid in contact with a single hard line. We have found complete wetting by the columnar phase at the wall-isotropic fluid interface. When the fluid is confined between two hard walls, capillary columnar ordering occurs via a first-order phase transition. For higher chemical potentials the system exhibits layering transitions even for very narrow slits (near the one-dimensional limit). The theoretical model used was a density-functional theory based on the Fundamental-Measure Functional applied to a fluid of hard rectangles in the restricted-orientation approximation (Zwanzig model). The results presented here can be checked experimentally in two-dimensional granular media made of rods, where vertical motions induced by an external source and excluded volume interactions between the grains allow the system to explore those stationary states which entropically maximize packing configurations. It is known that when hard spheres are added to a pure system of hard rods the stability of the smectic phase may be greatly enhanced, and that this effect can be rationalised in terms of depletion forces. In the present paper we first study the effect of orientational order on depletion forces in this particular binary system, comparing our results with those obtained adopting the usual approximation of considering the rods parallel and their orientations frozen. We consider mixtures with rods of different aspect ratios and spheres of different diameters, and we treat them within Onsager theory. Our results indicate that depletion effects, and consequently smectic stability, decrease significantly as a result of orientational disorder in the smectic phase when compared with corresponding data based on the frozen--orientation approximation. These results are discussed in terms of the $\tau$ parameter, which has been proposed as a convenient measure of depletion strength. We present closed expressions for $\tau$, and show that it is intimately connected with the depletion potential. We then analyse the effect of particle geometry by comparing results pertaining to systems of parallel rods of different shapes (spherocylinders, cylinders and parallelepipeds). We finally provide results based on the Zwanzig approximation of a Fundamental--Measure density--functional theory applied to mixtures of parallelepipeds and cubes of different sizes. In this case, we show that the $\tau$ parameter exhibits a linear asymptotic behaviour in the limit of large values of the hard--rod aspect ratio, in conformity with Onsager theory, as well as in the limit of large values of the ratio of rod breadth to cube side length, $d$, in contrast to Onsager approximation, which predicts $\tau\sim d^3$., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

We investigate the effect of three-body correlations on the phase behavior of hard rectangle two-dimensional fluids. The third virial coefficient, $B_3$, is incorporated via an equation of state that recovers scaled particle theory for parallel hard rectangles. This coefficient, a functional of the orientational distribution function, is calculated by Monte Carlo integration, using an accurate parameterized distribution function, for various particle aspect ratios in the range 1-25. A bifurcation analysis of the free energy calculated from the obtained equation of state is applied to find the isotropic (I)-uniaxial nematic (N$_u$) and isotropic-tetratic nematic (N$_t$) spinodals and to study the order of these phase transitions. We find that the relative stability of the N$_t$ phase with respect to the isotropic phase is enhanced by the introduction of $B_3$. Finally, we have calculated the complete phase diagram using a variational procedure and compared the results with those obtained from scaled particle theory and with Monte Carlo simulations carried out for hard rectangles with various aspect ratios. The predictions of our proposed equation of state as regards the transition densities between the isotropic and orientationally ordered phases for small aspect ratios are in fair agreement with simulations. Also, the critical aspect ratio below which the N$_t$ phase becomes stable is predicted to increase due to three-body correlations, although the corresponding value is underestimated with respect to simulation., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. Using density-functional theory, we have analyzed the phase behavior of binary mixtures of hard rods of different lengths and diameters. Previous studies have shown a strong tendency of smectic phases of these mixtures to segregate and, in some circumstances, to form microsegregated phases. Our focus in the present work is on the formation of columnar phases which some studies, under some approximations, have shown to become thermodynamically stable prior to crystallization. Specifically we focus on the relative stability between smectic and columnar phases, a question not fully addressed in previous work. Our analysis is based on two complementary perspectives: on the one hand, an extended Onsager theory, which includes the full orientational degrees of freedom but with spatial and orientational correlations being treated in an approximate manner; on the other hand, we formulate a Zwanzig approximation of fundamental-measure theory on hard parallelepipeds, whereby orientations are restricted to be only along three mutually orthogonal axes, but correlations are faithfully represented. In the latter case novel, complete phase diagrams containing regions of stability of liquid-crystalline phases are calculated. Our findings indicate that the restricted-orientation approximation enhances the stability of columnar phases so as to preempt smectic order completely while, in the framework of the extended Onsager model, with full orientational degrees of freedom taken into account, columnar phases may preempt a large region of smectic stability in some mixtures, but some smectic order still persists., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures. Scaled particle theory for a binary mixture of hard discorectangles and for a binary mixture of hard rectangles is used to predict possible liquid-crystal demixing scenarios in two dimensions. Through a bifurcation analysis from the isotropic phase, it is shown that isotropic-nematic demixing is possible in two-dimensional liquid-crystal mixtures composed of hard convex bodies. This bifurcation analysis is tested against exact calculations of the phase diagrams in the framework of the restricted-orientation two-dimensional model (Zwanzig model). Phase diagrams of a binary mixture of hard discorectangles are calculated through the parametrization of the orientational distribution functions. The results show not only isotropic-nematic, but also nematic-nematic demixing ending in a critical point, as well as an isotropic-nematic-nematic triple point for a mixture of hard disks and hard discorectangles., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures.
