Background: Research regarding the feasibility and effects of dancing and exercise with musical support programmes on the physical fitness of adults with intellectual disability (ID) is scarce. The purpose of this study was to provide scientific evidence regarding the feasibility of a training programme consisting of dancing and exercise with music designed for adults with ID, as well as to assess its impact on their body composition and cardiovascular and muscular fitness. Methods: A total of 30 adults (mean age 36.37 ± 11.24 years) with mild (n = 13), moderate (n = 16) or severe (n = 1) ID took part in a 10-week dancing and exercise with music programme. Recruitment and completion rate, adherence to the programme, participation and adverse effects were registered as measures of feasibility. The body mass index, cardiovascular endurance (6-min walk test) and muscular strength (standing long jump test) of the participants were assessed in order to determine the effects of the programme on their fitness level. Results: A 92.5% recruitment rate and a 90% completion rate were achieved. Adherence to the programme stood at 76.6%, and no adverse effects were registered. The comparison between the values obtained in the initial and final evaluations indicated the existence of positive changes in all the fitness dimensions measured. Conclusion: A training programme combining dancing and exercise with music proved to be feasible when performed by adults with ID. These kind of programmes can have a positive effect on the fitness level of this specific group.

Background: The aim of the study was to identify the reliability and validity of the SAPF questionnaire and the Stunkard rating scale in determining self-perceived physical appearance and the degree of body dissatisfaction in a group of elderly Spanish people., Methods: Both instruments were adapted to Spanish people and were administered twice to a group of 86 elderly people. Their reliability and validity were assessed by means of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), Cronbach's alpha and Spearman's rho coefficient, from the physical fitness level of the participants and their body mass index (BMI). ANOVA test was carried out to compare the variables with normal distribution., Results: The questionnaire and the Stunkard rating scale showed a good test-retest reliability (ICC=0.78 and ICC=0.8, respectively). SAPF and fitness level showed a significant, albeit weak, association (rho=0.424), while the association between self-perception of body composition and BMI was moderately strong (rho=0.727). The self-perceived physical appearance of 59.5% of the sample was acknowledged to be normal, 11.4% perceived it as bad and 29.1% as good. Only 27.1% were satisfied with their body image, while the other participants showed a desire to lose the equivalent weight of one (47.06%), two (22.35%) or three or more (3.5%) points in the Stunkard scale., Conclusion: The versions of both instruments adapted to Spanish persons showed reliability and validity, and showed that it was possible to determine that a large part of the sample was dissatisfied with their body image. BMI had a significant influence in this regard.

This systematic review aimed to identify and summarize the reliability and validity of the questionnaires that have been designed for assessing self-perceived physical fitness (PF) in elderly people. Three electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, SPORTDiscuss and Scopus) were searched systematically from their inception until March 2021 in order to find investigations that provided information on the reliability and/or validity of questionnaires used for identifying self-perceived PF in this population. Nine studies fulfilled these criteria, and seven questionnaires were found, five of them being specifically designed for the elderly. Concurrent validity was mostly obtained by correlating the items of the questionnaires with PF field-based tests, and poor to moderately strong associations were obtained. Test-retest reliability was informed in five questionnaires, and high values were generally observed. The SRFit questionnaire showed the best rates of concurrent validity and test-retest reliability, although these results were partially affected by the mean age of the sample. The lack of a rigorous methodological approach when designing these questionnaires detected in this review, asks for further studies using quantitative and qualitative approaches in order to create more solid and valid measurement tools., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Background: Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) show fatigue, impaired gait and decreased functional mobility, which lead to a low quality of life (QoL). Low-cost and easy to perform exercise modalities having a positive impact on the aforementioned symptoms are needed. The performance of Nordic Walking (NW) could be a useful rehabilitation strategy but, to our knowledge, no study has been published in this regard as yet. This case series study aims at providing information regarding the usefulness and impact of a three-month NW program on self-perceived fatigue, functional mobility, physical fitness and QoL on a group of people with mild relapsing-remitting MS., Methods: A case series study with multiple assessments was performed. Three data collection points at 1-week intervals for three weeks were done at baseline. The intervention consisted of a 12-weeks NW program with a total of four measurement occasions, one every three weeks. The Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), the Timed up and Go test (TUG), the 6-Minute Walk test (6MWT) and the Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale (MSIS-29), were used to assess the outcomes of the program on the participants' self-perceived fatigue, functional mobility, physical fitness and QoL, respectively., Results: Of the 14 participants who volunteered for the study, five completed at least 80% of the planned sessions and were included in the final analysis. The intervention did not have a clinical significant impact on the participants' fatigue while its impact on their QoL showed mixed results. Positive trends were found for all the participants in their functional mobility and physical fitness. Regarding functional mobility, clinically important changes were observed in three participants. None of the observed changes in physical fitness achieved clinical significance., Conclusion: A 12-week Nordic walking program did not appear to be particularly feasible and had little impact on the functional levels on a group of people with mild relapsing-remitting MS. Given that beneficial effects were seen in some participants, and taken into account the low adherence rate observed, future studies should explore the feasibility of NW programs performed under different environmental conditions (i.e. outdoors) and including motivational strategies aimed at increasing participation., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Purpose: This research was aimed at evaluating the effects of a five-month detraining period on the functional fitness level of a group of non-institutionalized and active older adults after taking part in a multi-component training program. A secondary aim was to determine how usual physical activity (PA) levels vary due to cessation of the program., Methods: We tested sixty-five older people (mean age: 77.1 ± 6.2; 83% women) during the final week of an 8-month multi-component training program and during the first week after its resumption (five months later). We used the senior fitness test and the Minnesota Questionnaire to assess their functional fitness and their PA levels respectively., Results: We observed a significant worsening of lower-limb strength (p = 0.008), shoulder range of motion (p = 0.004), and dynamic balance (p < 0.001) once the detraining period was completed. There was a slight downward trend in the remaining functional fitness dimensions, and there were significant differences when comparing the amount of PA estimated at pre-detraining and post-detraining (5155 ± 2258 vs 3937 ± 2087 MET-min·wk -1 ; p < 0.001). Older adults classified as very active showed a non-significant trend to smaller decreases in functional fitness once the detraining period was over, in comparison with those considered active., Conclusions: Active older people who regularly participated in a multicomponent training program showed a significant reduction in their strength, range of motion, and dynamic balance levels after a five-month detraining period. Self-reported PA decreased significantly during this time frame. Background: In our country the Spanish short version of the Minnesota Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire (VREM) and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire in elderly people (IPAQ-E) are considered useful tools for estimating the amount of physical activity (PA) performed by the geriatric population. However, few studies have been carried out on their psychometric properties. Therefore, this research aims to provide information on their convergent validity by analysing the degree of association that both questionnaires show with physical fitness level., Material and Methods: A total of 105 people (mean age: 76.77 (SD=6.01) years; 84.8% women), answered both questionnaires and performed the Senior Fitness Test (SFT), in order to assess their physical fitness level., Results: Significant correlations were found between the SFT and the VREM items related to energy expenditure derived from walking (r=0.227) or from performing sports activities or dancing (r=0.235), and the estimated total energy expenditure (r=0.314). The IPAQ-E did not establish significant associations with any of the variables analysed. Although a certain a priori correlation was observed between the VREM and the IPAQ-E (r=0.447, p<0.001) and the mean difference between both parameters was nil (p=0.553), it was considered that the questionnaires showed a lack of agreement due to the great width found in the range of differences., Conclusions: The use of the VREM questionnaire is recommended for estimating the amount of PA performed by the geriatric population, as it shows a certain degree of association, albeit weak, with the level of physical fitness.

Background: Pilates can be an interesting rehabilitation strategy for people with multiple sclerosis (MS), since is a low-cost and attractive physical exercise modality that has shown to have beneficial effects in other neurological pathologies. For prescribing Pilates to this population, health professionals should be aware of its potential benefits, a goal that can be achieved by making available updated scientific evidence in this regard. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review and a meta-analysis aimed at identifying the characteristics and methodological quality of the investigations that have studied the effects of Pilates in people affected with MS., Methods: Four electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, PEDro, SPORTDiscuss and Scopus) were systematically searched up to April 2018 for intervention studies focused on the effects of Pilates on people with MS. A meta-analysis was conducted according to previous consensus regarding core outcome measures for this type of research. The methodological quality of the studies finally included was performed by means of the Physiotherapy Evidence Database and the Quality Assessment Tool for Before-After Studies with No Control Group., Results: Fourteen studies, 10 randomized controlled trials and 4 quasi-experimental, were finally selected. The methodological quality of the randomized controlled trials was considered poor in five studies and good in three investigations. The four quasi-experimental studies showed a methodological quality ranging from "poor" to "fair. Ten of the eleven investigations that analyzed the effects of Pilates on the patients' physical function reported significant effects on different variables related to this outcome. Four out of the six studies that informed about the effects of Pilates on fatigue reported significant benefits. Two of the three studies that analyzed the impact of performing Pilates on the patients' quality of life reported significant benefits for this outcome. Pilates also resulted on significant changes on balance confidence and walking ability. Depression was not influenced by this therapy. The meta-analysis performed showed that Pilates was not more effective than other therapies for improving functional mobility, cardiorespiratory fitness, fatigue and quality of life., Conclusions: Pilates is a feasible therapy for people with MS that can lead to improvements on their physical function, and it might be helpful for reducing self-perceived fatigue. The potential beneficial effects of Pilates are not significantly greater than those derived from the performance of other physical therapies.
