This paper presents an actuator fault-tolerant control (FTC) strategy for a hexacopter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed specifically for precision agriculture applications. The proposed approach integrates advanced sensing techniques, including the estimation of Near-Infrared (NIR) reflectance from RGB imagery using the Pix2Pix deep learning network based on conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs), to enable the calculation of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for health assessment. Additionally, trajectory flight planning is developed to ensure the efficient coverage of the targeted agricultural area while considering the vehicle’s dynamics and fault-tolerant capabilities, even in the case of total actuator failures. The effectiveness of the proposed system is validated through simulations and real-world experiments, demonstrating its potential for reliable and accurate data collection in precision agriculture. An NDVI test was conducted on a sugarcane crop using the estimated NIR to assess the crop’s condition during its tillering stage. Therefore, the main contributions this paper include (i) the development of an actuator FTC strategy for a hexacopter UAV in precision agriculture applications, integrating advanced sensing techniques such as NIR reflectance estimation using deep learning network; (ii) the design of a flight trajectory planning method ensuring the efficient coverage of the targeted agricultural area, considering the vehicle’s dynamics and fault-tolerant capabilities; (iii) the validation of the proposed system through simulations and real-world experiments; and (iv) the successful integration of FTC scheme, advanced sensing, and flight trajectory planning for reliable and accurate data collection in precision agriculture.

Abstract Breast cancer-related lymphedema is currently one of the most serious complications that most affect the quality of life of women undergoing breast cancer. The aim of this study was to explore in-depth the experience of women who suffer from lymphoedema after breast cancer and how does this condition affect corporeality, with no judgements. For this purpose, a qualitative methodology was followed. In-depth interviews, interviewer's field notes and participants' letters were used for data collection. The participants were twenty Spanish women with lymphoedema after overcome a breast cancer in the past. Healthcare specialists with experience in the topic were also included. Results showed 2 main categories: “From cancer to lymphedema, another disease another disease” and “Potential for transition and transformation towards a new way of life”. As a conclusion, the difficulty in accessing adequate treatment, the need for greater awareness of lymphedema and the importance of the emotional and psychological dimension of this chronic disease. Highlighting the attitudes that these women develop for self-care and the concept of new corporeality. After breast cancer, women with lymphedema experience a drastic change that affects all areas of their lives. The adaptation process, and the search for resources and aid, play a fundamental role in overcoming this process.

IntroductionThe vaccines developed against COVID-19 have different modes of action, with a primary focus on the spike protein of the virus. Adverse effects following vaccination have been reported, including local and systemic symptoms. Understanding the potential side effects on the urinary tract after vaccination is of importance. Actively investigating and comprehending the potential impact on the urinary tract, we can enhance public health strategies and pave the way for safer and more effective vaccination programs.MethodologyThe study was based on an online survey that included the Spanish Version of the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS-S); 2,362 men and women replied to the survey. After the application of the exclusion criteria, 1,563 participants were insured. In the context of COVID-19, individuals were questioned regarding several key factors related to their vaccination status and medical history. These factors included the number of vaccine doses received, the specific type of vaccine administered, whether they had previously contracted COVID-19, and the frequency of prior infections, if applicable.ResultsA total of 1,563 (74.7% women and 27.3% men) subjects between the ages of 18 and 45 completed the survey and were included in the final analyses. The most frequently administered vaccine type was Pfizer-BioNTech (42.2%), and most subjects received three doses. The proportion of females who received the AstraZeneca vaccine and do not require to urinate during the night is significantly higher compared to males (59.1% vs. 33.3%; p

Keratinocytes play an essential role in the inflammatory phase of wound regeneration. In addition to migrating and proliferating for tissue regeneration, they produce a large amount of cytokines that modulate the inflammatory process. Previous studies have shown that subthermal treatment with radiofrequency (RF) currents used in capacitive resistive electric transfer (CRET) therapy promotes the proliferation of HaCat keratinocytes and modulates their cytokine production. Although physical therapies have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in a variety of experimental models and in patients, knowledge of the biological basis of these effects is still limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of CRET on keratinocyte proliferation, cytokine production (IL-8, MCP-1, RANTES, IL-6, IL-11), TNF-α secretion, and the expression of MMP9, MMP1, NF-κB, ERK1/2, and EGFR. Human keratinocytes (HaCat) were treated with an intermittent 448 kHz electric current (CRET signal) in subthermal conditions and for different periods of time. Cell proliferation was analyzed by XTT assay, cytokine and TNF-α production by ELISA, NF-κB expression and activation by immunofluorescence, and MMP9, MMP1, ERK1/2, and EGF receptor expression and activation by immunoblot. Compared to a control, CRET increases keratinocyte proliferation, increases the transient release of MCP-1, TNF-α, and IL-6 while decreasing IL-8. In addition, it modifies the expression of MMPs and activates EGFR, NF-κB, and ERK1/2 proteins. Our results indicate that CRET reasonably modifies cytokine production through the EGF receptor and the ERK1/2/NF-κB pathway, ultimately modulating the inflammatory response of human keratinocytes.

The phenomenon of chemsex has emerged as an essential public health issue in recent years. This systematic review aimed to investigate currently available harm reduction strategies and to evaluate the efficacy of the corresponding interventions. Methods: A systematic review of the scientific literature related to harm and risk reduction strategies and the effectiveness of chemsex interventions. Between January 2024 and May 2024, the articles were retrieved from the electronic databases Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycInfo, Cochrane, Dialnet, CUIDEN, and SciELO. The review protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (registration number CRD42024508953). The inclusion criteria were as follows: (I) original studies published in peer-reviewed journals, (II) studies exploring harm reduction interventions for chemsex, and (III) studies reflecting the efficacy of harm reduction interventions for chemsex. Two reviewers independently selected articles by title, abstract, and full paper review and extracted data. Two authors described the selected studies and assessed their methodological quality. Results: The systematic review comprised six scientific papers that met the selection criteria and were obtained from five countries. Although a limited number of studies were included, it was observed that they presented a medium–high methodological quality. Programs evaluated interventions to reduce harm from chemsex, such as a web-based intervention that improved self-efficacy to refuse risky behaviors and accept HIV testing. The studies suggested that peer-led programs can be effective, especially with facilitators who have experienced chemsex dependence. Conclusion: Harm reduction strategies in chemsex are effective and should be promoted by health professionals. Interventions should be accessible, personalized, and non-judgmental to provide appropriate care and support, ensuring a comprehensive and effective public health response.

Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is the most common type of alopecia and its treatments involve drugs that have various adverse effects and are not completely effective. Radiofrequency-based therapies (RF) are an alternative for AGA treatment. Although there is increasing clinical evidence of the effectiveness of RF for alopecia, its effects at the tissue and cellular level have not been studied in detail. The objective of this study was to analyze ex vivo the potential effect of RF currents used in capacitive resistive electrical transfer (CRET) therapy on AGA. Hair follicles (HFs) were donated by patients with AGA and treated with CRET. AGA-HFs were exposed in vitro to intermittent 448 kHz electric current in subthermal conditions. Cell proliferation (Ki67), apoptosis (TUNEL assay), differentiation (β-catenin), integrity (collagen and MMP9), thickness of the epidermis surrounding HF, proportion of bulge cells and melanoblasts in AGA-HF were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. CRET increased proliferation and decreased death of different populations of AGA-HF cells. In addition, the melanoblasts increased in bulge and the epidermis surrounding the hair follicle thickened. These results support the effectiveness of RF-based therapies for the treatment of alopecia. However, clinical trials are necessary to know the true effectiveness of CRET therapy and other RF therapies for AGA treatment.

IntroductionStress is characterized as a challenging occurrence that triggers a physiological and/or behavioral allostatic response, alongside the demands typically encountered throughout the natural course of life. A sustained state of stress gives rise to secondary effects, including insomnia and neck pain. Also, the risk of musculoskeletal problems in the cervical and lumbar spine can be increased due to a sustained state of stress. The present study main objective is to study the association between orofacial and pelvic floor muscles in women in Spain.MethodologyAn observational, cross-sectional, retrospective analytical study was designed and carried out in the laboratories of the European University of Madrid. Sixty-five participants were recruited with a mean age of 29.9 ± 7.69. Measurements were taken by myotonometry on natural oscillation frequency (Hz), dynamic stiffness (N/m), elasticity (N/m2), mechanical stress relaxation time (ms) and creep, for the following muscles: right and left masseter, right and left temporalis and central fibrous nucleus of the perineum (CFPF). On the other hand, the subjects completed the following questionnaires: perceived stress scale (PSS-14), anxiety scale (STAI), self-reported bruxism questionnaire (CBA), Fonseca Anamnestic Index and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale (PSQI).ResultsSignificant correlations were found in several parameters between the right temporalis and CFPF (pConclusionThe results support the proposed hypothesis. To the author's knowledge, this is the first study which relates both locations, and it is suggested to continue with the research and expand the knowledge of it.

The self-interacting $\lambda\phi^{4}$ scalar field theory is a warhorse in quantum field theory. Here we explore the one-loop order impact from one universal extra dimension, $S^{1}/\mathbb{Z}_{2}$, to the self-energy and four point vertex functions associated to this theory. Such effects come as an infinite number of UV divergences corresponding to an infinite superposition of excited KK particles around the loop. We show that dimensional regularisation is adequate enough to control them in terms of the product of the one dimensional inhomogenous Epstein zeta function times the gamma function. From the analytical properties of these functions, the UV divergences are extracted and the counterterms defined; the latter turn out to be of canonical dimension four at the Lagrangian level. We use both, the MS-scheme and a mass-dependent subtraction scheme to remove divergences. Only the latter manifestly satisfy the decoupling theorem., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, submitted to J. High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
A comprehensive analysis on the photon self-energy, the fermion self-energy, and the fermion vertex function is presented at one loop in the context of quantum electrodynamics (QED) with 1 extra dimension. In 5-dimensional theories, characterized by an infinite number of Kaluza-Klein fields, one-loop amplitudes involve discrete as well as continuous sums, $\sum^\infty_{n=1}\int d^4k$, that could diverge. Using dimensional regularization, we express such sums as products of gamma and Epstein functions, both defined on the complex plane, with divergences arising from poles of these functions in the limit as $ D \to 4$. Using the analytical properties of the Epstein function, we show that the ultraviolet divergences generated by the Kaluza-Klein sums can be consistently renormalized, which means that the corresponding renormalized quantities reduce to the usual ones of QED at the limit of a very large compactification scale $R^{-1}$. The main features of QED at the one-loop level were studied. We use the mass-dependent $\mu$-scheme to calculate, in QED with an arbitrary number $n$ of extra dimensions, a beta function fulfilling all desirable physical requirements. We argue that in this type of theories, with a large mass spectrum covering a wide energy range, beta functions should not be calculated by using mass-independent renormalization schemes. We show that the beta function is finite for any energy $\mu$. In particular, it reduces to the usual QED result $e^3/12\pi^2$ for $m\ll \mu \ll R^{-1}$ and vanishes for $m\gg \mu$, with $m$ the usual fermion mass. Throughout the work, the decoupling nature of all our results obtained from the analytical properties of the Epstein function is stressed., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review D, 24 pages, 6 figures

Abstract Background The aging of the population and the progressive increase in life expectancy in developed countries is leading to a high incidence of cerebrovascular diseases. Several studies have demonstrated that robot-assisted rehabilitation therapies combined with serious games can improve rehabilitation outcomes. Social interaction in the form of multiplayer games has been highlighted as a potential element to increase patient’s motivation and exercise intensity, which professionals have described as one of the determining factors in maximizing rehabilitation outcomes. Despite this, it has not been widely studied. Physiological measures have been proven as an objective tool to evaluate patients’ experience in robot-assisted rehabilitation environments. However, they have not been used to evaluate patients’ experience in multiplayer robot-assisted rehabilitation therapies. The main objective of this study is to analyze whether the interpersonal interaction inherent in a competitive game mode affects the patients’ physiological responses in robot-assisted rehabilitation environments. Methods A total of 14 patients participated in this study. The results of a competitive game mode were compared with a single-player game mode with different difficulty levels. Exercise intensity and performance were measured through parameters extracted from the game and the information provided by the robotic rehabilitation platforms. The physiological response of patients in each game mode was measured by the heart rate (HR) and the galvanic skin response (GSR). Patients were asked to fill out the IMI and the overall experience questionnaire. Results The exercise intensity results show that high-difficulty single-player game mode is similar in terms of intensity level to a competitive game mode, based on velocity values, reaction time and questionnaire results. However, the results of the physiological responses of the patients measured by GSR and HR are lower in the case of the competitive mode compared to the high-difficulty single-player game mode, obtaining results similar to those obtained in the low-difficulty single-player game mode. Conclusions Patients find the competitive game mode the most fun, which is also the mode they report experiencing the most effort and stress level. However, this subjective evaluation is not in line with the results of physiological responses. This study concludes that interpersonal interaction inherent to a competitive game mode influences patients’ physiological responses. This could mean that social interaction is an important factor to consider when interpreting the results obtained from physiological measurements.

One of the most important forces generated during gait is the vertical ground reaction force (vGRF). This force can be measured using force plates, but these can limit the scope of gait analysis. This paper presents a method to estimate the vGRF using inertial measurement units (IMU) and machine learning techniques. Four wearable IMUs were used to obtain flexion/extension angles of the hip, knee, and ankle joints, and an IMU placed over the C7 vertebra to measure vertical acceleration. We trained and compared the performance of two machine learning algorithms: feedforward neural networks (FNN) and random forest (RF). We investigated the importance of the inputs introduced into the models and analyzed in detail the contribution of lower limb kinematics and vertical acceleration to model performance. The results suggest that the inclusion of vertical acceleration increases the root mean square error in the FNN, while the RF appears to decrease it. We also analyzed the ability of the models to construct the force signal, with particular emphasis on the magnitude and timing of the vGRF peaks. Using the proposed method, we concluded that FNN and RF models can estimate the vGRF with high accuracy.

Abstract The aim of the present research was to analyse modifications in the autonomic stress response of Physiotherapy students undergoing a 12-scenario Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation (OSCE). A total of 86 last year students of the Physiotherapy bachelor’s degree (27.29 years (SD = 6.66); 36 females and 50 males) randomly assigned were monitored during the complete OSCE to measure heart rate variability (HRV) in temporal, frequency, and non-linear domains. The HRV analysed showed a large anticipatory stress response of students maintained during the entire evaluation. The stress response varied regarding OSCE station complexity and demands and the highest sympathetic response was not found in higher emotional scenarios. The autonomic modulation monitoring allows teachers to design OSCE scenarios more adapted to the students, limiting the effect of the stress response to allow a better performance.

We construct a consistent quantum field theory of a dimensionally reduced self-interacting scalar field. The Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction on the well-known $\Phi^{4}$ scalar theory, on a certain $(4+n)$ spacetime with an arbitrary number of extra dimensions, induces a four dimensional reduced theory with scalar fields: the zeroth mode (`light' field) and an infinite number of KK-excited modes (`heavy' fields). This theory is quantized by Hamiltonian path integral methods. It is shown, from first principles, that non-trivial measure factors at the level of the functional measure are absent even if the whole set of heavy fields is taken into account. Hints on the regularization and renormalization process are briefly discussed., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We construct an effective theory for the SM with extra dimensions. We start from a theory governed by the extra-dimensional groups ISO$(1,3+n)$ and $G_{\rm SM}({\cal M}^{4+n})=SU_C(3,{\cal M}^{4+n})\times SU_L(2,{\cal M}^{4+n})\times U_Y(1,{\cal M}^{4+n})$, characterized by an unknown energy scale $\Lambda$ and valid at energies far below this scale. Assuming that the extra dimensions are much larger than the distance scale of this theory, we construct an effective theory with symmetry groups ISO(1,3), $G_{\rm SM}({\cal M}^{4})$. The theories are connected by a canonical transformation that hides ISO$(1,3+n)$, $G_{\rm SM}({\cal M}^{4+n})$ into ISO(1,3), $G_{\rm SM}({\cal M}^{4})$; KK fields receive mass. Using a set of orthogonal functions $\{f^{(\underline{0})},f^{(\underline{m})}\}$, generated by the Casimir invariant $\bar{P}^2$ associated with the translations subgroup $T(n)\subset$ISO$(n)$, we expand the degrees of freedom of ISO$(1,3+n)$, $G_{\rm SM}({\cal M}^{4+n})$ in general Fourier series, whose coefficients are the degrees of freedom of ISO(1,3), $G({\cal M}^{4})$. These functions, which correspond to the projection on $\{|\bar{x}\big>\}$ of the discrete basis $\{|0\big>,|p^{(\underline{m})}\big>\}$ of $\bar{P}^2$, are central to define the effective theory. Components along the ground state $f^{(\underline{0})}=\big <\bar x|0\big>$ do not receive mass at the compactification scale, so they are the SM fields; components along excited states $f^{(\underline{m})}=\big<\bar x|p^{(\underline{m})}\big>$ get mass at this scale, so they are KK excitations. For any direction $|p^{(\underline{m})}\neq0\big>$ there are a massive gauge field and a pseudo-Goldstone boson. We stress resemblances of this mass-generating mechanism with the Englert-Higgs mechanism and discuss physical implications. We include a full catalog of Lagrangian terms that can be used to calculate Feynman rules., Comment: 46 pages; content and discussion have been improved

Hypertrophic scars and keloids are two different manifestations of excessive dermal fibrosis and are caused by an alteration in the normal wound-healing process. Treatment with radiofrequency (RF)-based therapies has proven to be useful in reducing hypertrophic scars. In this study, the effect of one of these radiofrequency therapies, Capacitive Resistive Electrical Transfer Therapy (CRET) on biomarkers of skin fibrosis was investigated. For this, in cultures of human myofibroblasts treated with CRET therapy or sham-treated, proliferation (XTT Assay), apoptosis (TUNEL Assay), and cell migration (Wound Closure Assay) were analyzed. Furthermore, in these cultures the expression and/or localization of extracellular matrix proteins such as α-SMA, Col I, Col III (immunofluorescence), metalloproteinases MMP1 and MMP9, MAP kinase ERK1/2, and the transcription factor NFκB were also investigated (immunoblot). The results have revealed that CRET decreases the expression of extracellular matrix proteins, modifies the expression of the metalloproteinase MMP9, and reduces the activation of NFκB with respect to controls, suggesting that this therapy could be useful for the treatment of fibrotic pathologies.

An exact calculation of the Higgs boson decays $H\to q_i q_j$ mediated by flavor changing neutral currents is presented in the context of the Standard Model. Using up-to-date experimental data, branching ratios of the order of $10^{-7}$, $10^{-8}$, $10^{-8}$, and $10^{-15}$ are found for the $\bar{b}s+\bar{s}b$, $\bar{b}d+\bar{d}b$, $\bar{s}d+\bar{d}s$, and $\bar{c}u+\bar{u}c$ decay modes, respectively., Comment: Revised version accepted in J. Many of the patients with COVID-19 have suffered respiratory distress requiring prolonged endotracheal intubation (ETI) resulting in laryngotracheal complication with an impact on breathing, phonation, and swallowing. Our aim is to describe laryngeal injuries diagnosed after ETI in patients with COVID-19 in a multicentre study. Methods: A prospective descriptive observational study was conducted from January 2021 to December 2021, including COVID-19 patients with laryngeal complications due to ETI diagnosed in several Spanish hospitals. We analyzed the epidemiological data, previous comorbidities, mean time to ICU admission and ETI, need for tracheostomy, mean time on invasive mechanical ventilation until tracheostomy or weaning, mean time in ICU, type of residual lesions, and their treatment. Results: We obtained the collaboration of nine hospitals during the months of January 2021 to December 2021. A total of 49 patients were referred. Tracheostomy was performed in 44.9%, being late in most cases (more than 7–10 days). The mean number of days of ETI until extubation was 17.63 days, and the main post-intubation symptoms were dysphonia, dyspnea, and dysphagia, in 87.8%, 34.7%, and 42.9%, respectively. The most frequent injury was altered laryngeal mobility, present in 79.6%. Statistically, there is a greater amount of stenosis after late ETI and after delayed tracheostomy, not observing the data with the immobility alterations. Conclusion: The mean number of days of ETI was long, according to the latest guidelines, with the need for several cycles of pronation. This long ETI may have had an impact on the increase of subsequent laryngeal sequelae, such as altered laryngeal mobility or stenosis.

Wound healing consists of a sequence of coordinated phases: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. In skin lesions, neutrophils and keratinocytes are the main cell types participating in the inflammatory phase, during which the release of mediators intervening in the regulation of the subsequent regenerative phases takes place. These mediators are involved in tissue regeneration through induction of transendothelial migration, enzyme secretion, cell adhesion, and T-Cell activation and cytotoxicity, as well as neutrophil accumulation at the wound site. Among these mediators, the keratinocyte-synthesized chemokines RANTES, MCP-1, MIP-1, and IL-8 stand out. Although therapies applying electromagnetic fields or electric currents have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in a variety of experimental models and in patients through reduced production of proinflammatory cytokines such as IFN-Υ and increased production of IL-10, the knowledge on the biological basis of these effects is still limited. Previous studies by our group have shown that subthermal treatment with radiofrequency (RF) currents used in capacitive-resistive electric transfer (CRET) therapy promotes the proliferation and migration of various cell types, such as human ADSC (stem cells), fibroblasts or keratinocytes, involved in skin regeneration. This study investigates the effects of in vitro treatment with CRET currents on cytokine production by HaCat human keratinocytes. The results reveal that, compared to sham-exposed controls, RF stimulation induces decreased production of IL-8 and RANTES and increased MCP-1, without significantly affecting other chemokines such as MIP-1. Taken together, our results indicate that due to the RF effects on the production of chemokines involved in the modulation of the inflammatory phase of wound regeneration, CRET therapy could be effective in the treatment of skin wounds.

The $Z\to \gamma \gamma$ and $H\to \gamma \gamma \gamma$ decays are strictly forbidden in the Standard Model, but they can be induced by theories that violate Lorentz symmetry or the CPT theorem. By assuming that a nonvanishing $Z\gamma \gamma$ vertex is induced in some context of new physics, and by analyzing the reaction $H\to \gamma Z^*\to \gamma \gamma \gamma$ in the $Z$ resonance, we obtain an estimation for the branching ratio of the $H\to \gamma \gamma \gamma$ decay. Specifically, it is found that $BR(H\to \gamma \gamma \gamma)\lesssim BR(H\to \gamma Z)BR_{Exp}(Z\to \gamma \gamma)$, which is of the order of $10^{-7}$., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The lepton flavor violating decay of the Higgs boson $H\to l_Al_B$ is studied within two qualitatively different extensions of the Yukawa sector: one renormalizable and the other nonrenormalizable; both incorporating Lorentz violation in a model-independent fashion. These extensions are characterized by Yukawa-like matrices, the former by a constant Lorentz 2-tensor $Y^{AB}_{\mu \nu}$, whereas the latter by a constant Lorentz vector $Y^{AB}_\mu$. It is found that the experimental constraints on the decays $l_A\to l_B\gamma$ severely restrict lepton flavor violating Higgs signals in the renormalizable scenario. In this context, it is found that $BR(H\to \mu^\pm e^\mp)$ and $BR(H\to \tau^\pm \mu^\mp)$ cannot be larger than $10^{-18}$ and $10^{-11}$, respectively. In the nonrenormalizable scenario, transitions mediated by the Higgs or the $Z$ gauge boson are induced at tree level, and we find mild restrictions on lepton flavor violation. Using the experimental limits on the three-body decays $l_A \to l_B \bar{l}_Cl_C$ to constraint the vector $Y^{AB}_\mu$, it is found that the branching ratio for the decays $H\to \mu^\pm e^\mp$ is of about $4\times 10^{-9}$, more important, a branching ratio of $7\times 10^{-4}$ is found for the $\tau^\pm \mu^\mp$ mode. Accordingly, the decay $H \to \tau^\pm \mu^\mp$ could be at the reach of future measurements. The lepton flavor violating decays of the $Z$ gauge boson were also studied. In the renormalizable scenario, it was found the undetectable branching ratios $BR(Z\to \mu^\pm e^\mp)<5.7\times 10^{-21}$ and $BR(Z\to \tau^\pm \mu^\mp)<2.0\times 10^{-12}$. In the nonrenormalizable scenario, it was found that $BR(Z\to \mu^\pm e^\mp)<0.67\times 10^{-12}$ and $BR(Z\to \tau^\pm \mu^\mp)<1.12\times 10^{-7}$. Although the latter branching ratio is relatively large, it still could not be within the range of future measurements., Comment: Updated to essentially match published version

The well-known Yang-Mills theory with one $ S^{1} / Z_{2}$ universal extra dimension (UED) is generalized to an arbitrary number of spatial extra dimensions through a novel compactification scheme. In this paper, the Riemannian flat based manifold under consideration contains $ n $ spatial extra dimensions defined by $ n $ copies of the orbifold $ S^{1} / Z_{2}$. In this approach, we present the gauge structure and the mass spectrum of the effective four-dimensional theory. We introduce the concept of standard and nonstandard gauge transformations of the effective theory, and explicitly identify the emergence of massive vector fields in the same number as massless ('pseudo-Goldstone') scalars in the compactified theory, verifying that a Higgs-like mechanism operates in the compactification process. It is found that, in contrast with the one UED scenario, in cases with two or more UEDs there emerge massive scalar fields. Besides, at phase-space level, the Hamiltonian analysis yields that the higher-dimensional and compactified theories are classically equivalent using the fundamental concept of canonical transformation. This work lays the ground for a wider study on these theories concerning their quantization and predictive power at the level of quantum fluctuations., Comment: Minor changes in the Introduction, and some typos corrected

In a previous work [J. Math. Phys. 52, 123504 (2011)], refined algebraic quantisation (RAQ) within a family of classically equivalent constrained Hamiltonian systems that are related to each other by rescaling one momentum-type constraint was investigated. In the present work, the first steps to generalise this analysis to cases where more constraints occur are developed. The system under consideration contains two momentum-type constraints, originally abelian, where rescalings of these constraints by a non-vanishing function of the coordinates are allowed. These rescalings induce structure functions at the level of the gauge algebra. Providing a specific parametrised family of real-valued scaling functions, the implementation of the corresponding rescaled quantum momentum-type constraints is performed using RAQ when the gauge algebra: (i) remains abelian and (ii) undergoes into an algebra of a nonunimodular group with nonconstant gauge invariant structure functions. Case (ii) becomes the first example known to the author where an open algebra is handled in refined algebraic quantisation. Challenging issues that arise in the presence of non-gauge invariant structure functions are also addressed., Comment: 15 pages v2. Minor comments and clarifications added

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
One-loop effects of Standard Model (SM) extensions comprising universal extra dimensions are essential as a consequence of Kaluza-Klein (KK) parity conservation, for they represent the very first presumable virtual effects on low-energy observables. In this paper, we calculate the one-loop CP-even contributions to the SM WWgamma and WWZ gauge couplings produced by the KK excited modes that stand for the dynamical variables of the effective theory emerged from a generalization of the SM to five dimensions, in which the extra dimension is assumed to be universal, after compactification. The employment of a covariant gauge-fixing procedure that removes gauge invariance associated to gauge KK excited modes, while keeping electroweak gauge symmetry manifest, is a main feature of this calculation, which is performed in the Feynman 't Hooft gauge and yields finite results that consistently decouple for a large compactification scale. After numerical evaluation, our results show to be comparable with the one-loop SM contributions and well within the reach of a next linear collider., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, new references added, typos corrected

Compactified Yang-Mills theories with one universal extra dimension were found [arXiv:1008.4638] to exhibit two types of gauge invariances: the standard gauge transformations (SGTs) and the nonstandard gauge transformations (NSGTs). In the present work we show that these transformations are not exclusive to compactified scenarios. Introducing a notion of hidden symmetry, based on the fundamental concept of canonical transformation, we analyse three different gauge systems, each of which is mapped to a certain effective theory that is invariant under the so-called SGTs and NSGTs. The systems under discussion are: (i) four dimensional pure $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory, (ii) four dimensional $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills with spontaneous symmetry breaking, and (iii) pure Yang-Mills theory with one universal compact extra dimension. The canonical transformation, that induces the notion of hidden symmetry, maps objects with well defined transformation laws under a gauge group $G$ to well defined objects under a non-trivial subgroup $H \subset G$. In the case where spontaneous symmetry breaking is present, the set of SGTs corresponds to the group into which the original gauge group is broken into, whereas the NSGTs are associated to the broken generators and can be used to define the unitary gauge. For the system (iii), the SGTs coincide with the gauge group $ SU(N,\cal{M}^{4}) $, whereas the NSGTs do not form a group; in this system the 'fundamental' theory and the effective one are shown to be classically equivalent., Comment: 26 pages, title has changed, some comments and clarifications added, some references added

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We investigate refined algebraic quantisation within a family of classically equivalent constrained Hamiltonian systems that are related to each other by rescaling a momentum-type constraint. The quantum constraint is implemented by a rigging map that is motivated by group averaging but has a resolution finer than what can be peeled off from the formally divergent contributions to the averaging integral. Three cases emerge, depending on the asymptotics of the rescaling function: (i) quantisation is equivalent to that with identity scaling; (ii) quantisation fails, owing to nonexistence of self-adjoint extensions of the constraint operator; (iii) a quantisation ambiguity arises from the self-adjoint extension of the constraint operator, and the resolution of this purely quantum mechanical ambiguity determines the superselection structure of the physical Hilbert space. Prospects of generalising the analysis to systems with several constraints are discussed., Comment: 26 pages. v2: minor clarifications and corrections

Let $R$ be a semisimple ring. A pair $(A,C)$ is called almost-Koszul if $A$ is a connected graded $R$-ring and $C$ is a compatible connected graded $R$-coring. To an almost-Koszul pair one associates three chain complexes and three cochain complexes such that one of them is exact if and only if the others are so. In this situation $(A,C)$ is said to be Koszul. One proves that a connected $R$-ring $A$ is Koszul if and only if there is a connected $R$-coring $C$ such that $(A,C)$ is Koszul. This result allows us to investigate the Hochschild (co)homology of Koszul rings. We apply our method to show that the twisted tensor product of two Koszul rings is Koszul. More examples and applications of Koszul pairs, including a generalization of Fr\"oberg Theorem, are discussed in the last part of the paper., Comment: The final version, accepted for publication in Journal of Noncommutative Geometry

Regular physical exercise has shown great benefits in preventing age-related functional losses and in improving the perception of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in older people. To optimize these benefits, it would be interesting to evaluate what type of exercise is better. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the effects of heavy-resistance training on mobility and HRQoL in older women. Forty healthy, untrained older women (60–75 years) were randomly assigned to three groups: circuit resistance training (CRT, n = 15), traditional resistance training (TRT, n = 15) or the control group (CG, n = 10). During the 12-week training period, both experimental groups performed training with heavy loads, twice a week. Before and after the training period, the Timed Up and Go test, as a proxy of mobility, and the perception of HRQoL were evaluated. TRT and CRT resulted in a statistically significant improvement in the Timed Up and Go test (−5.4 and −10.3%, respectively; p < 0.05), but only the improvement after CRT was significantly greater than changes in the CG (p < 0.001). Only CRT elicited improvements in several dimensions of the perception of the HRQoL questionnaire, such as: physical functioning (13%, p < 0.001), general health (8.1%; p = 0.048), vitality (17.7%; p < 0.001), role emotional (6.7%; p = 0.044) and physical component summary (6.3%; p = 0.001). The change in the CRT group was greater than in the CG (p < 0.001) in the physical functioning score. The present findings show that CRT might be a time- (and hence cost-) effective alternative to trigger multiple positive functional and psychological adaptations in older women.

Hepatoportal sclerosis (HPS) is characterized by presinusoidal intrahepatic portal hypertension associated with splenomegaly and anemia in patients with non-cirrhotic liver. Liver biopsy is essential, especially to rule out other processes. Being a disease of unknown etiology, the majority of cases have been described in eastern countries. However, it may be an underdiagnosed disease in the West. Symptoms are related to portal hypertension and the clinical spectrum is wide, ranging from anemia with normal liver function tests to bleeding due to esophageal varices. Treatment is directed to the complications and the prognosis is better than in patients with cirrhosis. We report three cases of HPS presenting at different clinical stages and the findings of liver biopsies, the clinical outcomes and a review of scientific literature.

phosphoribosyltransferases ,enzyme immobilization ,green process ,dietary nucleotides ,Chemical technology ,TP1-1185 ,Chemistry ,QD1-999 - Abstract
The enzymatic synthesis of nucleotides offers several advantages over traditional multistep chemical methods, such as stereoselectivity, regioselectivity, enantioselectivity, simple downstream processing, and the use of mild reaction conditions. However, in order to scale up these bioprocesses, several drawbacks, such as the low enzyme stability and recycling, must be considered. Enzyme immobilization may overcome these cost-related problems by enhancing protein stability and facilitating the separation of products. In this regard, tetrameric hypoxanthine–guanine–xanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (HGXPRT) from Thermus thermophilus HB8 was covalently immobilized onto glutaraldehyde-activated MagReSyn®Amine magnetic iron oxide porous microparticles (MTtHGXPRT). In this context, two different strategies were followed: (a) an enzyme immobilization through its N-terminus residues at pH 8.5 (derivatives MTtHGXPRT1-3); and (b) a multipoint covalent immobilization through the surface lysine residues at pH 10 (derivatives MTtHGXPRT4-5). The immobilized derivatives of MTtHGXPRT3 (activity 1581 international units per gram of support, IU/g; retained activity 29%) and MTtHGXPRT5 (activity 1108 IU/g; retained activity 23%) displayed the best wet biocatalyst activity, and retained activity values in the enzymatic synthesis of inosine-5′-monophosphate (IMP). In addition, the dependence of the activities and stabilities of both derivatives on pH and temperature was tested, as well as their reusability potential. Taking these results into account, MTtHGXPRT3 was chosen as the best biocatalyst (negligible loss of activity at 60 °C during 24 h; reusable up to seven cycles). Finally, as proof of concept, the enzymatic production of dietary nucleotides from high concentrations of low soluble bases was achieved.

Budd-Chiari syndrome can be defined as an interruption or diminution of the normal blood flow out of the liver. Patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome present with varying degrees of symptomatology that can be divided into the following categories: fulminant, acute, subacute and chronic. The subacute form is the most common presentation. A majority of patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome have an underlying hypercoagulability state. We present the case of a young woman with Crohn's disease on oral contraceptives who developed bilateral pulmonary thromboembolism and Budd-Chiari syndrome.

The implementation of a quality Tutorial Action Plan (TAP), in which the integral formation of students is the main objective, is a topical issue in the Spanish university environment . This paper aims to identify the actions contemplated in the TAPs of different Spanish universities and catalog the different types of activities performed by the teachers-tutors in the context of tutorial action. To achieve this, the authors conducted a qualitative analysis based on expert panels. As a result, three main vectors were extracted: Standard elements in a college TAP, critical aspects from tutors and managers of tutorial actions, and tutorial actions with a seal of quality. From the analysis it was concluded that quality tutorial action is the basis for academic excellence. Its achievement requires to clarify and recognize the role of the tutor, adjust appropriately the ratio of students allocated per tutor, and promote the development of transversal skills in students. For this, the authors propose a cross-coordination among teachers, as well as counseling and support; tutor training and professionalism; and the application of working methods that allow proper guidance and monitoring of students.
