Standardized transfer is an evidence-based framework designed to improve communication between healthcare professionals, reducing risks and ensuring safe, high-quality care. Despite its benefits, implementing this framework in clinical practice poses challenges. Nurses often do not use a systematic guide as a theoretical framework for handovers in daily practice. Objective: To explore nurses’ perceptions regarding the use of standardized transfers. Methodology: This exploratory qualitative cross-sectional study aimed to gain insight into nurses’ experiences and perspectives on pediatric patient transfers. Using purposive sampling, nurses from the pediatric intensive care unit and hospital wards at the hospital institution hosting the study were interviewed. Data were collected through 21 in-depth individual interviews conducted between April and May 2023. The semi-structured interviews, lasting 16 to 28 min, focused on nurses’ views on communication between units during patient transfers. The qualitative approach allowed for a comprehensive understanding of nurses’ perceptions, particularly the barriers they face in practice. The study included 21 nurses: 9 from the pediatric intensive care unit and 12 from pediatric wards. To ensure diverse representation, nurses with varying levels of work experience were included, and at least one nurse from each hospital ward participated. Results: The data were classified into the following main categories: the current state of pediatric patient transfers, attitudes of healthcare professionals, barriers and challenges to implementation, nursing documentation, motivational aspects, and the child-family relationship. The findings revealed significant issues in the communication process during patient transfers, with no systematic guidelines in place. While nurses demonstrated a positive attitude toward the standardization of transfers, they identified numerous practical challenges, particularly those related to the hospital’s nursing documentation system. Conclusions: Nurses view standardized transfers favorably, but they face substantial barriers that limit their practical implementation.

Urban morphogenesis in informal settlements results from occupation, transformation, and morphological extension processes that cause territorial fragmentation, producing inequality and spatial segregation, which are the main characteristics of Latin American informal urbanism. However, there is scarce research on analysing the processes that cause fragmentation. The research develops a morphological analysis that aims to improve the processes of urban assemblage by identifying the dynamics of territorialisation and deterritorialisation promoted by political and social factors, capable of producing spatial discontinuity in the informal morphogenic evolution. As a method, a diachronic analysis is developed by mapping the morphological evolution of the processes of occupation, transformation and extension of networks between 2002 and 2021 on three models of informal settlements in Lima, Mexico City, Medellin and Santiago de Chile for a comparison of cases. As a result, corrective mechanisms called “interface devices” (ID) are obtained, which include the improvement of land management policies and the implementation of gradual interventions according to informal evolution, decreasing urban fragmentation in different phases of territorial evolution and the possibility of being applied in international contexts of the global south.

Discoveries of new species often depend on one or a few specimens, leading to delays as researchers wait for additional context, sometimes for decades. There is currently little professional incentive for a single expert to publish a stand-alone species description. Additionally, while many journals accept taxonomic descriptions, even specialist journals expect insights beyond the descriptive work itself. The combination of these factors exacerbates the issue that only a small fraction of marine species are known and new discoveries are described at a slow pace, while they face increasing threats from accelerating global change. To tackle this challenge, this first compilation of Ocean Species Discoveries (OSD) presents a new collaborative framework to accelerate the description and naming of marine invertebrate taxa that can be extended across all phyla. Through a mode of publication that can be speedy, taxonomy-focused and generate higher citation rates, OSD aims to create an attractive home for single species descriptions. This Senckenberg Ocean Species Alliance (SOSA) approach emphasises thorough, but compact species descriptions and diagnoses, with supporting illustrations and with molecular data when available. Even basic species descriptions carry key data for distributions and ecological interactions (e.g., host-parasite relationships) besides universally valid species names; these are essential for downstream uses, such as conservation assessments and communicating biodiversity to the broader public.This paper presents thirteen marine invertebrate taxa, comprising one new genus, eleven new species and one re-description and reinstatement, covering wide taxonomic, geographic, bathymetric and ecological ranges. The taxa addressed herein span three phyla (Mollusca, Arthropoda, Echinodermata), five classes, eight orders and twelve families. Apart from the new genus, an updated generic diagnosis is provided for four other genera. The newly-described species of the phylum Mollusca are Placiphorella methanophila Vončina, sp. nov. (Polyplacophora, Mopaliidae), Lepetodrilus marianae Chen, Watanabe & Tsuda, sp. nov. (Gastropoda, Lepetodrilidae), Shinkailepas gigas Chen, Watanabe & Tsuda, sp. nov. (Gastropoda, Phenacolepadidae) and Lyonsiella illaesa Machado & Sigwart, sp. nov. (Bivalvia, Lyonsiellidae). The new taxa of the phylum Arthropoda are all members of the subphylum Crustacea: Lepechinella naces Lörz & Engel, sp. nov. (Amphipoda, Lepechinellidae), Cuniculomaera grata Tandberg & Jażdżewska, gen. et sp. nov. (Amphipoda, Maeridae), Pseudionella pumulaensis Williams & Landschoff, sp. nov. (Isopoda, Bopyridae), Mastigoniscus minimus Wenz, Knauber & Riehl, sp. nov. (Isopoda, Haploniscidae), Macrostylis papandreas Jonannsen, Riehl & Brandt, sp. nov. (Isopoda, Macrostylidae), Austroniscus indobathyasellus Kaiser, Kniesz & Kihara, sp. nov. (Isopoda, Nannoniscidae) and Apseudopsis daria Esquete & Tato, sp. nov. (Tanaidacea, Apseudidae). In the phylum Echinodermata, the reinstated species is Psychropotes buglossa E. Perrier, 1886 (Holothuroidea, Psychropotidae).The study areas span the North and Central Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the North, East and West Pacific Ocean and depths from 5.2 m to 7081 m. Specimens of eleven free-living and one parasite species were collected from habitats ranging from an estuary to deep-sea trenches. The species were illustrated with photographs, line drawings, micro-computed tomography, confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy images. Molecular data are included for nine species and four species include a molecular diagnosis in addition to their morphological diagnosis.The five new geographic and bathymetric distribution records comprise Lepechinella naces Lörz & Engel, sp. nov., Cuniculomaera grata Tandberg & Jażdżewska, sp. nov., Pseudionella pumulaensis Williams & Landschoff, sp. nov., Austroniscus indobathyasellus Kaiser, Kniesz & Kihara, sp. nov. and Psychropotes buglossa E. Perrier, 1886, with the novelty spanning from the species to the family level. The new parasite record is Pseudionella pumulaensis Williams & Landschoff, sp. nov., found in association with the hermit crab Pagurus fraserorum Landschoff & Komai, 2018.

El presente trabajo pretende abordar un análisis del conjunto de las obras en prosa de María de San José, discípula de Santa Teresa, a partir de un repaso exhaustivo de los títulos y de los testimonios conservados. Para ello, se propone una aproximación a su producción desde la perspectiva de la pragmática textual, que pone en el centro el concepto de sororidad; en tanto que, como nos proponemos demostrar, esta se constituye en origen y causa de buena parte de las elecciones discursivas que modulan su prosa. Así, partiendo del examen del contexto de creación que revelan sus textos, se establece una clasificación de sus obras que logra trascender los desajustes existentes entre la laxitud genérica de la escritura conventual y el canon literario del momento, poniendo de manifiesto constantes temáticas y formales en su pluma, que de otro modo pasarían inadvertidas. De entre ellas, descuella con fuerza el recurso a la interlocución y su predilección por el género del diálogo humanístico, elementos ambos que constituyen un trasunto retórico de la sororidad en la escritura de la carmelita.

El compromiso laboral ha sido identificado como un factor determinante de ciertas actitudes y conductas organizacionales, así como un predictor de absentismo y rotación laboral. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue analizar el compromiso organizacional que los trabajadores de instituciones públicas mexicanas tienen y su asociación con algunos factores personales y organizacionales, utilizando para ello el modelo de Meyer y Allen (1991), esto con la finalidad de saber qué aspectos son más influyentes en la construcción y mantenimiento del compromiso hacia la organización. Se realizó un estudio no experimental, se partió de una población total de 800 trabajadores de 4 instituciones públicas mexicanas y se aplicó un muestreo no probabilístico que incluyó un total de 260 trabajadores de base y confianza; además, se aplicó un análisis estructural factorial que limitó los hallazgos al escenario de la investigación, pero abrieron la discusión sobre la inclusión de factores determinantes del compromiso como el liderazgo y la gestión sobre el desempeño laboral. Se encontró una tendencia hacia el compromiso afectivo, hallazgo que constituye un hecho favorable para las instituciones públicas mexicanas, toda vez que demuestra buenos niveles de satisfacción con base a las expectativas de los empleados.

La metodología Lean Manufacturing reúne una vasta gama de herramientas que todas las empresas incluidas las PYMES (Pequeñas y Medianas Empresas) pueden disponer para potencializar su competitividad y reducir los malos hábitos que generan desperdicios. El objetivo de este estudio es realizar un diagnóstico del proceso productivo en las industrias del plástico a partir de la herramienta Value Stream Mapping de los autores Rother y Shook (1999), con la finalidad de identificar las causas relacionadas con el desperdicio de material y aportar estrategias de mejora. El enfoque es cualitativo, apoyándose de la observación no participante para el estudio de tiempos y movimientos; y de la entrevista semiestructurada aplicada a trabajadores de la línea de producción para explorar la causa raíz de los desperdicios. Los resultados arrojan que el origen principal del desperdicio es el desconocimiento puntual de la ejecución de las tareas por el personal en al menos tres de cinco áreas del proceso. Se concluye con una propuesta del futuro del proceso de producción, a la vez que se apoya de las 5s.

The design of bridges must balance sustainability and construction simplicity. A game-theory-based optimization method was applied in this research to find a sustainable steel–concrete composite bridge design. The sustainability was evaluated through cost and environmental and social impact using the Life Cycle Assessment method. The optimization process considered four criteria simultaneously, using a discrete version of the SCA algorithm and a transfer function for discretization. The preferred solutions were selected using the Minkowski distances approach. Results showed a decrease in slab reinforcement and an increase in the amount of steel in the cross-section, leading to only an 8.2‰ increase in cost compared to similar studies. Regarding the cross-section, the geometry obtained considers cells in the upper and lower parts of the webs to improve the bending resistance. The proposed method allows for the simultaneous optimization of multiple criteria and provides a sustainable yet simple bridge design solution.

Education for environmental and social sustainability in Higher Education requires a new approach that encompasses both care for nature and social inclusion. Ecopedagogy offers a critical framework within which to provide specific teaching and learning initiatives. In particular, this article aims to explore the effects of a critical (eco)feminist approach implemented through a critical feminist service-learning program. We use a qualitative study with an ethnographic-interpretative approach. The results show an increase in awareness and sensitivity towards environmental education and social justice in the students' understanding, attitude, and commitment to sustainability. Institutional limitations were also detected, leading to a reduction in the opportunities for achieving optimal results that would create a global meaning and a real application of the teachings for sustainability and social justice.

Over the past decades, public policies have aimed to promote gender equality and a gender perspective in educational and research settings. However, Higher Education shows significant deficiencies in gender-related training in its curricula. This article aims to define the pedagogical model called Critical Feminist Service-Learning, presenting a series of keys that allow feminist theories to be applied in real-life contexts within the framework of Physical Activity and Sports. This model facilitates educational advancements through transformative approaches that prioritize gender equity and social justice. Focused on the teaching of Physical Activity and Sports, it explores the confluence of various feminist philosophies and theories in Service-Learning, aligning with the principles of feminist pedagogies. While recognizing the successes of this Service-Learning approach, a call is made for a text that consolidates and synthesizes this perspective, proposing a clear general model as described here. In contrast to the prevailing model, the traditional charity-oriented Service-Learning that predominates in educational institutions, Critical Feminist Service-Learning includes all participants as beneficiaries. It critiques hierarchical society, recognizes underrepresented groups and voices, moving away from structures that reinforce social orders and structural oppression. The advocated pedagogical model here offers a practical solution to promote gender equality and social justice in educational and research environments, specifically in the context of Physical Activity and Sports, promoting the use of transformative pedagogies in Higher Education. This paper describes how, from an academic exercise, Industrial Design students assume the role of social intrapreneurs (Cabana, 2018: 90-91) to become aware of the potential of design and the richness in non-academic learning that this type of dynamics can generate. In Colombia, there is sometimes a dependency between the artisan and the designer, because some professionals hired by state entities or third-sector agencies carry out design processes for the artisans, considering their skills, but these designs are not generated in a participatory manner. What is sought with this exercise is to empower artisans through the search for a design process according to their needs, where collectively the designer facilitates the artisan the incorporation of elements of the design process proper to the design into the empirical exercise of the artisan. This way, the artisan meets the creative requirements of customers and the local market, which allows them to increase their competitiveness and not depend on the designers to achieve a product portfolio that guarantees economic, cultural, and social sustainability.

In this work, we performed anti-proliferative assays for the compound N-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-propylpentanamide (HO-AAVPA) on breast cancer (BC) cells (MCF-7, SKBR3, and triple-negative BC (TNBC) MDA-MB-231 cells) to explore its pharmacological mechanism regarding the type of cell death associated with G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) expression. The results show that HO-AAVPA induces cell apoptosis at 5 h or 48 h in either estrogen-dependent (MCF-7) or -independent BC cells (SKBR3 and MDA-MB-231). At 5 h, the apoptosis rate for MCF-7 cells was 68.4% and that for MDA-MB-231 cells was 56.1%; at 48 h, that for SKBR3 was 61.6%, that for MCF-7 cells was 54.9%, and that for MDA-MB-231 (TNBC) was 43.1%. HO-AAVPA increased the S phase in MCF-7 cells and reduced the G2/M phase in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells. GPER expression decreased more than VPA in the presence of HO-AAVPA. In conclusion, the effects of HO-AAVPA on cell apoptosis could be modulated by epigenetic effects through a decrease in GPER expression.

An “Innerburb” is an urban structure that emerged between the 1950s and 1980s, settled in rural areas, and is considered the first periphery of the Latin American city. This structure results from socio-spatial and territorial evolutionary processes, constituting the pinnacle of informal evolution. However, despite offering a comprehensive perspective on the informal problem, innerburbs have been scarcely reviewed in the literature. This article explores the Latin American innerburb by adopting as a method a comparative study of the public/private interface in the cases of San Cosme in Lima, Villa Rodolfo Ricciardelli in Buenos Aires and Vila Heliopolis in São Paulo, evaluating their adaptation and interconnection with the city through morphological indicators, using morphological mapping through satellite images as an analytical tool, and using Space Syntax as a topological approach in the analysis of connectivity and visibility indicators. The objective of the research is the detection of morphological patterns that alter the functioning of the public/private interface in innerburbs. The results show that the existence of impermeable facades, the lack of public spaces and the illegal appropriation in the development of informal practices are transgressive adaptability patterns at the micro-scale that affect the interface, drastically limiting the interconnection between the innerburb and the formal fabric, restricting its morphological openness and affecting the development of socioeconomic activities. As a discussion and conclusion, corrective measures for progressive improvement in innerburbs are established, focusing on the adaptability of housing and road space as a means of interconnection between the innerburb and the city.

La literatura científica y la legislación educativa actual ponen de manifiesto la necesidad de llevar a cabo un cambio metodológico que tome como punto de partida los procesos de evaluación compartidos y formativos. El auge de las metodologías activas es una constante en las clases de Educación Física en la etapa de Primaria. Sin embargo, son escasas las referencias a la evaluación y limitados los instrumentos para valorar la coherencia entre ambos procesos. Este artículo presenta la construcción y validación de un instrumento con el fin de detectar la relación entre los procesos de evaluación (calificación) y la metodología implementada por el profesorado. Para ello se ha empleado la consulta a personas expertas con método Delphi y su posterior pilotaje. El resultado final obtenido ha sido un cuestionario denominado MAEV-EFP. Las limitaciones encontradas se vinculan con la falta de claridad terminológica, así como los escasos conocimientos acerca de la metodología y evaluación (calificación) de los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje en Educación Física en Primaria. This change is based on shared and formative assessment process. Although active methodologies are present in Physical Education in Primary school, there are few references to evaluation and limited instruments to assess the coherence between the two processes. This paper shows the development and validation of an instrument designed to detect the relationship between the assessment process and the methodology implemented by teachers. The instrument has been validated by Delphi method and a pilot test. MAEV-EFP was the resulting questionnaire. The lack of terminological clarity and knowledge about methodology and assessment of teaching-learning process in Physical Education in Primary school, were some of the limitations found. Abstract Global change is affecting soil biodiversity and functioning across all terrestrial ecosystems. Still, much is unknown about how soil biodiversity and function will change in the future in response to simultaneous alterations in climate and land use, as well as other environmental drivers. It is crucial to understand the direct, indirect and interactive effects of global change drivers on soil communities and ecosystems across environmental contexts, not only today but also in the near future. This is particularly relevant for international efforts to tackle climate change like the Paris Agreement, and considering the failure to achieve the 2020 biodiversity targets, especially the target of halting soil degradation. Here, we outline the main frontiers related to soil ecology that were presented and discussed at the thematic sessions of the World Biodiversity Forum 2022 in Davos, Switzerland. We highlight multiple frontiers of knowledge associated with data integration, causal inference, soil biodiversity and function scenarios, critical soil biodiversity facets, underrepresented drivers, global collaboration, knowledge application and transdisciplinarity, as well as policy and public communication. These identified research priorities are not only of immediate interest to the scientific community but may also be considered in research priority programmes and calls for funding.

Abstract It is crucial to understand why people comply with measures to contain viruses and their effects during pandemics. We provide evidence from 35 countries (N total = 12,553) from 6 continents during the COVID-19 pandemic (between 2021 and 2022) obtained via cross-sectional surveys that the social perception of key protagonists on two basic dimensions—warmth and competence—plays a crucial role in shaping pandemic-related behaviors. Firstly, when asked in an open question format, heads of state, physicians, and protest movements were universally identified as key protagonists across countries. Secondly, multiple-group confirmatory factor analyses revealed that warmth and competence perceptions of these and other protagonists differed significantly within and between countries. Thirdly, internal meta-analyses showed that warmth and competence perceptions of heads of state, physicians, and protest movements were associated with support and opposition intentions, containment and prevention behaviors, as well as vaccination uptake. Our results have important implications for designing effective interventions to motivate desirable health outcomes and coping with future health crises and other global challenges.

Abstract Background The identification of patients with advanced chronic conditions and palliative care needs is essential since their care represents one of the main challenges for public health systems. The study aimed to determine the prevalence and characteristics of inpatients with palliative care needs in different services of a tertiary care hospital using the NECPAL CCOMS-ICO© tool. Methods A descriptive, cross-sectional cohort study was conducted in a tertiary hospital. The NECPAL tool identifies patients who require palliative care. Any patient with the Surprise Question with the answer “NO” and at least another question of the tool with a positive answer is considered a positive identification. Patients were classified as Non-NECPAL, NECPAL I-II, and NECPAL III, depending on the NECPAL tool criteria they met. The presence of physical symptoms, emotional distress, and social risk factors was assessed. Results Of the 602 inpatients, 236 (39.2%) were enrolled. Of them, 34 (14.4%) non-NECPAL, 202 (85.6%) NECPAL+ [105 (44.5%) NECPAL I-II, and 97 (41.1%) NECPAL III]. Physical symptom burden was high (pain intensity ≥ 1 in 68.3% of patients; tiredness ≥ 1 in 83.5%; somnolence ≥ 1 in 50.6%; dyspnea ≥ 1 in 37.9%; anorexia ≥ 1 in 59.5%). 64.1% had emotional distress, and 83.6% had social risk factors. It is common practice when simulating propagation through an optical fiber to assume that its characteristic parameters are constant and determined solely by the central wavelength of the input pulse. In this paper, we propose a study of the impact that the actual wavelength dependence of these parameters has on the propagation results. To this end, simulations were carried out considering both the constant model and the wavelength-dependent model, applying them to the case of the especially sensitive effect of supercontinuous generation in a photonic crystal fiber. The results showed differences of up to 20% of the spectrum and, hence, the importance of taking into account the wavelength dependence of the dispersion fiber parameters to obtain more-realistic results in the simulations.
