Grief is a natural and self-limited adaptation process to a new reality that emerges after a significant loss (whether real or perceived), with a broad variety of manifestations that exert an impact on a grieving person’s health. The study aim was to synthesize the evidence available about the interventions carried out by Primary Health Care nurses, by means of an individual approach to reduce maladaptive grief or maladaptive grief risk. A scoping review was conducted (November and December 2023) through searches in Medline, Cinahl, Web of Science, ProQuest and Scopus using MeSH terms combined with Booleans. Primary research of any design in adult people undergoing grief situations and receiving professional assistance by nurses in the primary, home and community care contexts published after 2009 in English, Spanish or Portuguese languages were included. Excluded publications were those conducted in in-hospital clinical settings and which did not correspond to research designs or the gray literature. The screening process was carried out by two reviewers using the appropriate JBI critical appraisal tools for each design and discrepancies were resolved by a third reviewer. A total of n = 10 studies were included (n = 4 qualitative, n = 2 RCTs, n = 1 quasi-experimental, n = 2 cross-sectional observational, and n = 2 mixed methods). The qualitative studies identified topics and subtopics of professionals’ and families’ experiences of grief. The observational studies analyzed symptoms and factors associated with the grieving process. Interventions consisted of cognitive–behavioral therapies delivered by psychological specialists who assessed the severity of grief in a range of cultural contexts using different instruments. The evidence retrieved from the studies that address the reduction in maladaptive grief or maladaptive grief risk is not conclusive. There is a need to increase both the number and the methodological quality of studies assessing the effectiveness of Nursing care in Primary Health Care for individuals experiencing maladaptive grief or maladaptive grief risk. Further research should focus on experimental studies, developing specific interventions conducted by nurses to address individual’s grief and prevent maladaptive grief.

The growing assertiveness of the ‘New Woman’ inspired a number of speculative fictions on what the future would look like if women ruled over men. Future gynecocracy was also imagined in Romania in the interwar years. For example, Ion Talpă rewrote in his 1937 novel Prin rotogoalele de fum (Through Smoke Rings) the Hebrew story of humankind’s fall in order to narrate through myth how women will prevail over brutish men. The resulting order is based on all-female sociality, including sexual matters. Women treat degraded men as animals in the all-woman society of Talpă’s ambiguously dystopian narrative, which features lesbian sexuality as a matter of course. This work is innovative for its use of Modernist metafictional devices in order to suggest how subjectivity determines the alternate eutopian or dystopian possible endings of the novel, thus undermining its apparently masculinist message.

The current study examined the changes in muscle oxygenation values and swimming performance after six sessions of sprint interval training during a three-week period in untrained swimmers. Twelve swimmers of both genders (age: 23.5 ± 5.6yrs) executed the twice-weekly experimental training protocol (EXP, n = 12), consisting of a 4 × 50 m front-crawl swimming (repeated sprint training—RST) with maximal intensity, and 2 min of passive recovery in between, after a short in-water warm-up. The control group (CON, n = 9) performed a continuous swimming set (200 m) at 120 b pm−1, with the same weekly frequency. Performance times in two maximum swim trials (400 m: T400 and 50 m: T50), muscle oxygenation of the deltoid muscle (SmO2) immediately after T400 and T50, 1-min heart rate recovery (HRR1) after T400, T50, and swim strokes during both swim trials (S/T400, S/T50) were assessed. For the EXP group, T400 improved by 2.4 (p = 0.011). In contrast, T50 presented no significant improvement (1%, p > 0.05). SmO2 decreased at T400 (5.5%, p = 0.017) and increased at T50 (3.7%, p = 0.030). HRR1 improved after T400 (7.9%, p = 0.002), T50 (4.6%, p = 0.005) and RST (9.6%, p = 0.002). S/T400 and S/T50 remained relatively unchanged (p > 0.05). The CON group presented no significant changes in any of the variables examined. In conclusion, six sprint interval training sessions can improve aerobic capacity over a 3-week training period, as indicated by the enhanced T400 performance and the reduced HRR1 values, in previously trained swimmers. Finally, the sensitivity of the near-infrared spectroscopy method to detect short-term training-induced changes is highlighted.

One of the priorities in family and community care is the epidemiological surveillance of the care needs and dysfunctionality present in populations of highly complex chronic patients (HCCPs) using standardised nursing languages. The aim of this study is to establish the prevalence of care needs and dysfunctionality among HCCPs in a specific health area by municipalities and geographical areas (metropolitan, north, and south) while verifying correlations with sociodemographic, financial, and health characteristics. This is an epidemiological, observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study carried out with a sample of 51,374 HCCPs, whose data were grouped into 31 municipalities. Data were collected on the following variables: sociodemographic, financial, health, functional status (health patterns), and care needs (nursing diagnoses). The mean age of the HCCPs was 73.41 (1.45) years, of which 56.18 (2.86)% were women. The municipalities in the northern area have a significantly higher proportion of older patients, HCCPs, lower incomes, and higher unemployment rates. The southern area had higher proportions of non-Spanish nationals and professionals in the hotel and catering industry, and the metropolitan area had a higher proportion of employed individuals and higher levels of education. Northern municipalities had a higher prevalence of illnesses and anxiolytic and anti-psychotic treatments. Dysfunctionality frequencies did not differ significantly by area. However, a higher prevalence of 13 nursing diagnoses was observed in the north. A high number of correlations were observed between population characteristics, dysfunctionality, and prevalent diagnoses. Finally, the frequencies of dysfunctionality in the population and the most common care needs were mapped by municipality. This research sought to ascertain whether there was an unequal distribution of these two aspects among HCCPs in order to gain a deeper epidemiological understanding of them from a family and community perspective using standardised nursing languages. The colloidal stability of polystyrene particles with different surface functional groups (sulfate and carboxyl) has been studied after adsorption of Triton X-100. The coverage degree and the medium pH were the main factors in this study. Three different types of colloidal stabilization were found, which can be clasified as a function of the relationship between the atractive interaction energy (VA, Van der Waals type) and the steric interaction energy (VS, repulsive type): electrostatic (VS = 0), electrosteric (VS < ⎥VA⎥), and steric (VS > ⎥VA⎥). The main difference between these stabilization types is the response against the electrolyte concentration: the first and second cases are affected by electrolyte addition, while the third one does not.Se ha estudiado la estabilidad coloidal de partículas de poliestireno con diferente funcionalidad superficial (sulfato y carboxilo) después de la adsorción de Triton X-100. El grado de recubrimiento y el pH del medio fueron variables fundamentales en el estudio. Se han encontrado tres tipos diferentes de estabilización coloidal que pueden clasificarse en función de la relación entre la energía de interacción atractiva de van der Waals (VA) y la energía de interacción repulsiva de origen estérico (VS): electrostático (VS = 0), electroestérico (VS < ⎥VA⎥) y estérico (VS >⎥VA⎥). La diferencia fundamental entre estos tres tipos de estabilización es la respuesta frente a la concentración de electrolito: los dos primeros son sensibles a la adición del mismo mientras que el último no lo es. Adicionalmente se han encontrado fenómenos de desestabilización, no predichos por la teoría DLVO extendida, los cuales dependen de la funcionalidad superficial, del grado de recubrimiento y del pH del medio de dispersión.

El aprovechamiento incontrolado de los recursos de Phytelephas macrocarpa y la deforestación han disminuido las poblaciones naturales de la especie cercanas a los centros poblados. En este estudio nos propusimos evaluar la morfología vegetativa de Phytelephas macrocarpa para comprender la variabilidad de sus poblaciones al noroeste de la Amazonía peruana. Para ello, se tuvieron en cuenta 28 caracteres (18 cuantitativos y 10 cualitativos) de 180 individuos adultos, que se compararon mediante las pruebas ANOVA y Kruskal-Wallis y se sometieron a análisis multivariados de agrupamiento jerárquico y de componentes principales. ABSTRACT Hypermucoviscosity (HMV) is a phenotype that is commonly associated with hypervirulence in Klebsiella pneumoniae. The factors that contribute to the emergence of HMV subpopulations remain unclear. In this study, eight K. pneumoniae strains were recovered from an inpatient who had been hospitalized for 20 days. Three of the isolates exhibited a non-HMV phenotype, which was concomitant with higher biofilm formation than the other five HMV isolates. All eight isolates were highly susceptible to serum killing, albeit HMV strains were remarkably more infective than non-HMV counterparts in a mouse model of infection. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) showed that the eight isolates belonged to the K57-ST412 lineage. Average nucleotide identity (FastANIb) analysis indicated that eight isolates share 99.96% to 99.99% similarity and were confirmed to be the same clone. Through comparative genomics analysis, 12 non-synonymous mutations were found among these isolates, eight of which in the non-HMV variants, including rmpA (c.285delG) and wbaP (c.1305T > A), which are assumed to be associated with the non-HMV phenotype. Mutations in manB (c.1318G > A), dmsB (c.577C > T) and tkt (c.1928C > A) occurred in HMV isolates only. RNA-Seq revealed transcripts of genes involved in energy metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and membrane transport, including cysP, cydA, narK, tktA, pduQ, aceB, metN, and lsrA, to be significantly dysregulated in the non-HMV strains, suggesting a contribution to HMV phenotype development. This study suggests that co-occurrence of HMV and non-HMV phenotypes in the same clonal population may be mediated by mutational mechanisms as well as by certain genes involved in membrane transport and central metabolism.IMPORTANCEK. pneumoniae with a hypermucoviscosity (HMV) phenotype is a community-acquired pathogen that is associated with increased invasiveness and pathogenicity, and underlying diseases are the most common comorbid risk factors inducing metastatic complications. HMV was earlier attributed to the overproduction of capsular polysaccharide, and more data point to the possibility of several causes contributing to this bacterial phenotype. Here, we describe a unique event in which the same clonal population showed both HMV and non-HMV characteristics. Studies have demonstrated that this process is influenced by mutational processes and genes related to transport and central metabolism. These findings provide fresh insight into the mechanisms behind co-occurrence of HMV and non-HMV phenotypes in monoclonal populations as well as potentially being critical in developing strategies to control the further spread of HMV K. pneumoniae.

These past few years society has experienced a worldwide pandemic that has affected every aspect of our lives. COVID-19 has forced institutions to integrate remote learning tools and techniques, even when most lack of resources to implement online methodologies. Education has been one of the areas greatly affected by these measures, making it compulsory to invest in new educational technologies to survive and succeed in a new normality scenario. The use of Virtual Reality has emerged as a great alternative thanks to the immersive aspects and practical experiences, but the question remains the same: What is the advantage of using virtual reality in the new normality we live in today? In this paper, a case study is presented to analyze the use of VR technologies to learn healthcare techniques recreating a preclinical VR scene that mimics a real life scenario for practices. This tool was used by students of the nursing degree at the University of Oviedo, who were able to take home the VR sets and carry out the practical assignments with the non-presence of an instructor. Several indicators are assessed and analysed using data gathered from the app, such as satisfaction, usability and learning factors, specifically designed for this study. With all results provided, this study shows that VR is a valid approach for online distance learning which does not have a negative effect in the acquisition of knowledge by the students, although an initial training on VR usage might be useful to consider in future research.

El art. 7 de la Ley 7/2012, de 29 de octubre, introdujo en nuestro ordenamiento la limitación de pagos en efectivo, régimen modificado a través de la Ley 11/2021, de 9 de julio. Apenas unos meses después el TJUE se pronunció por primera vez sobre la adecuación al ordenamiento comunitario del régimen de limitación de pagos en efectivo de un Estado miembro (Bulgaria) en la STJUE de 6 de octubre de 2021, ECOTEX Bulgaria, asunto C-544/19. En este estudio, tras examinar la posición del TJUE y de otras instituciones comunitarias, valoramos si nuestro régimen interno es compatible con esta jurisprudencia.
