Search

Star formation in the central molecular zone (CMZ) is suppressed with respect to that of the Galactic disk, and this is likely related to its high turbulent environment. This turbulence impedes the potential detection of prestellar cores. We present the temperature, density, and spatial structure of the CMZ molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027, which has been proposed to host a prestellar cluster in the Sgr B2 region. We analysed multiple HC$_{3}$N rotational transitions that were observed with the IRAM 30m, APEX, Yebes 40m, and GBT radio telescopes, together with SMA+APEX spatially resolved maps. The spectral shape of HC$_{3}$N lines shows three velocity components: a broad component with a line width of 23 km s$^{-1}$ (C1), and two narrow components with line widths of 7.2 and 8.8 km s$^{-1}$ (C2 and C3). This suggests that a fraction of the molecular gas in this cloud is undergoing turbulence dissipation. From a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium analysis we have found H$_{2}$ densities of 2$\times$10$^{4}$ cm$^{-3}$, 5$\times$10$^{4}$ cm$^{-3}$, and 4$\times$10$^{5}$ cm$^{-3}$ and kinetic temperatures of 140 K, 30 K, and 80 K for C1, C2, and C3, respectively. The spatially resolved maps confirm that the colder and high-density condensations C2 and C3, which peak in the 70-85 km s$^{-1}$ velocity range, are embedded in a more diffuse and warmer gas (C1). The larger-scale structure of the Sgr B2 region shows a hole at 40-50 km s$^{-1}$ that is likely due to a small cloud that shocked the Sgr B2 region and is spatially related with a massive cloud at 60-80 km s$^{-1}$. We propose that the impacting small cloud sequentially triggered the formation of Sgr B2(M), (N), and (S) and the condensations in G+0.693-0.027 during its passage. We report the first detection of the metal-bearing molecules sodium sulfide (NaS) and magnesium sulfide (MgS) and the tentative detection of calcium monoxide (CaO) in the interstellar medium (ISM) towards the Galactic Center molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027. The derived column densities are (5.0+-1.1) x 10$^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$, (6.0+-0.6) x $^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$, and (2.0+-0.5) x $^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$, respectively. This translates into fractional abundances with respect to H$_2$ of (3.7+-1.0) x $10^{-13}$, (4.4+-0.8) x $10^{-13}$, and (1.5+-0.4) x $10^{-13}$, respectively. We have also searched for other Na-, Mg- and Ca-bearing species towards this source but none of them have been detected and thus we provide upper limits for their abundances. We discuss the possible chemical routes involved in the formation of these molecules containing metals under interstellar conditions. Finally, we compare the ratio between sulfur-bearing and oxygen-bearing molecules with and without metals, finding that metal-bearing sulfur molecules are much more abundant than metal-bearing oxygen ones, in contrast with the general trend found in the ratios between other non metal- oxygen- and sulfur-bearing molecules. This further strengthen the idea that sulfur may be little depleted in G+0.693-0.027 as a result of the low velocity shocks present in this source sputtering large amounts of material from dust grains., Comment: 18 pages, 7 tables and 7 figures, final version accepted by ApJ

We report the first detection of SiC$_2$ in the interstellar medium. The molecule was identified through six rotational transitions toward G\,+0.693$-$0.027, a molecular cloud located in the Galactic center. The detection is based on a line survey carried out with the GBT, the Yebes 40m, and the IRAM 30m telescopes covering a range of frequencies from 12 to 276 GHz. We fit the observed spectra assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium and derive a column density of ($1.02\pm0.04)\times10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$, which gives a fractional abundance of $7.5\times10^{-11}$ with respect to H$_2$, and an excitation temperature of $5.9\pm0.2$ K. We conclude that SiC$_2$ can be formed in the shocked gas by a reaction between the sputtered atomic silicon and C$_2$H$_2$, or it can be released directly from the dust grains due to disruption. We also search for other Si-bearing molecules and detect eight rotational transitions of SiS and four transitions of Si$^{18}$O. The derived fractional abundances are $3.9\times10^{-10}$ and $2.1\times10^{-11}$, respectively. Cyanides, ranging from three carbon atoms to PAHs, and alkenyl compounds are abundant in the interstellar medium (ISM). Aminoacrylonitrile (3-Amino-2-propenenitrile, H$_{2}$N-CH=CH-CN), an alkenyl cyanide, thus represents a promising candidate for new interstellar detection. A comprehensive spectroscopic laboratory investigation of aminoacrylonitrile in its rotational ground vibrational state has been herein performed. The measurements carried out up to the THz regime made it possible to generate a precise set of reliable rest frequencies for its search in space up to sub-millimetre wavelengths. The $Z$-aminoacrylonitrile ($Z$-apn) isomer spectrum has been recorded employing a source-modulated sub-millimetre spectrometer, from 80 GHz to 1 THz. A combination of Doppler and sub-Doppler measurement regimes allowed to record 600 new lines. The collected data have enabled the characterisation of a set of spectroscopic parameters up to decic centrifugal distortion constants. The catalogue generated from the improved spectral data has been used for the search of $Z$-apn in the spectral survey of the G+0.693-0.027 molecular cloud located in the central molecular zone, in the proximity of the Galactic centre.

Interstellar amides have attracted significant attentions as they are potential precursors for a wide variety of organics essential to life. However, our current understanding of their formation in space is heavily based on observations in star-forming regions and hence the chemical networks lack the constraints on their early origin. In this work, unbiased sensitive spectral surveys with IRAM 30m and Yebes 40m telescopes are used to systematically study a number of amides towards a quiescent Galactic Centre molecular cloud, G+0.693-0.027. We report the first detection of acetamide (CH3C(O)NH2) and trans-N-methylformamide (CH3NHCHO) towards this cloud. In addition, with the wider frequency coverage of the survey, we revisited the detection of formamide (NH2CHO) and urea (carbamide; NH2C(O)NH2), which had been reported previously towards G+0.693-0.027. Our results are compared with those present in the literature including recent laboratory experiments and chemical models. We find constant abundance ratios independently of the evolutionary stages, suggesting that amides related chemistry is triggered in early evolutionary stages of molecular cloud and remain unaffected by the warm-up phase during the star formation process. Although a correlation between more complex amides and NH2CHO have been suggested, alternative formation routes involving other precursors such as acetaldehyde (CH3CHO), methyl isocyanate (CH3NCO) and methylamine (CH3NH2) may also contribute to the production of amides. Methylamine has been the only simple alkylamine detected in the interstellar medium for a long time. With the recent secure and tentative detections of vinylamine and ethylamine, respectively, dimethylamine has become a promising target for searches in space. Its rotational spectrum, however, has been known only up to 45 GHz until now. Here we investigate the rotation-tunneling spectrum of dimethylamine in selected regions between 76 and 1091 GHz using three different spectrometers in order to facilitate its detection in space. The quantum number range is extended to $J = 61$ and $K_a = 21$, yielding an extensive set of accurate spectroscopic parameters. To search for dimethylamine, we refer to the spectral line survey ReMoCA carried out with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array toward the high-mass star-forming region Sagittarius B2(N) and a spectral line survey of the molecular cloud G+0.693$-$0.027 employing the IRAM 30 m and Yebes 40 m radio telescopes. We report nondetections of dimethylamine toward the hot molecular cores Sgr B2(N1S) and Sgr B2(N2b) as well as G+0.693$-$0.027 which imply that dimethylamine is at least 14, 4.5 and 39 times less abundant than methylamine toward these sources, respectively. The observational results are compared to computational results from a gas-grain astrochemical model. The modeled methylamine to dimethylamine ratios are compatible with the observational lower limits. However, the model produces too much ethylamine compared with methylamine which could mean that the already fairly low levels of dimethylamine in the models may also be too high., Comment: Mon. Not. We obtained deep images of G 196-3 B and VHS J1256-1257 b with the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) at 1.3 mm. These data were combined with recently published Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and Very Large Array (VLA) data of VHS J1256-1257 b at 0.87 mm and 0.9 cm, respectively. Neither G 196-3 B nor VHS J1256-1257 b were detected in the NOEMA, ALMA and VLA data. At 1.3 mm, we imposed flux upper limits of 0.108 mJy (G 196-3 B) and 0.153 mJy (VHS J1256-1257 b) with a 3-sigma confidence. Using the flux upper limits at the millimeter and radio wavelength regimes, we derived maximum values of 0.016 M$_{\rm Earth}$ and 0.004 M$_{\rm Earth}$ for the mass of any cold dust that might be surrounding G 196-3 B and VHS J1256-1257 b, respectively. We put our results in the context of other deep millimeter observations of free-floating and companion objects with substellar masses smaller than 20 M$_{\rm Jupiter}$ and ages between 1 and a few hundred million years. Only two very young objects are detected out of a few tens concluding, as other groups did before, that the disks around these very low-mass objects must have small masses and possibly reduced sizes. If debris disks around substellar objects scale down in a similar manner as protoplanetary disks do, millimeter observations of moderately young brown dwarfs and planets must be at least two orders of magnitude deeper for being able to detect and characterize their surrounding debris disks., Comment: Accepted fro publication in A&A

Using high angular resolution ALMA observations ($0.02^{\prime\prime}\approx0.34$ pc), we study the thermal structure and kinematics of the proto super star cluster $13$ in the central region of NGC253 through their continuum and vibrationally excited HC$_3$N emission from $J=24-23$ and $J=26-25$ lines arising from vibrational states up to $v_4=1$. We have carried 2D-LTE and non-local radiative transfer modelling of the radial profile of the HC$_3$N and continuum emission in concentric rings of $0.1$ pc width. From the 2D-LTE analysis, we found a Super Hot Core (SHC) of $1.5$ pc with very high vibrational temperatures ($>500$ K), and a jump in the radial velocity ($21$ km s$^{-1}$) in the SE-NW direction. From the non-local models, we derive the HC$_3$N column density, H$_2$ density and dust temperature ($T_\text{dust}$) profiles. Our results show that the thermal structure of the SHC is dominated by the greenhouse effect due to the high dust opacity in the IR, leading to an overestimation of the LTE $T_\text{dust}$ and its derived luminosity. The kinematics and $T_\text{dust}$ profile of the SHC suggest that star formation was likely triggered by a cloud-cloud collision. We compare proto-SSC $13$ to other deeply embedded star-forming regions, and discuss the origin of the $L_\text{IR}/M_{\text{H}_2}$ excess above $\sim100$ L$_\odot$ M$_\odot^{-1}$ observed in (U)LIRGs.

In recent times, large organic molecules of exceptional complexity have been found in diverse regions of the interstellar medium. In this context, we aim to provide accurate frequencies of the ground vibrational state of two key aliphatic aldehydes, n-butanal and its branched-chain isomer, i-butanal, to enable their eventual detection in the interstellar medium. We employ a frequency modulation millimeter-wave absorption spectrometer to measure the rotational features of n- and i-butanal. We use the spectral line survey ReMoCA performed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array to search for n- and i-butanal toward the star-forming region Sgr B2(N). We also search for both aldehydes toward the molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027 with IRAM 30 m and Yebes 40 m observations. Several thousand rotational transitions belonging to the lowest-energy conformers have been assigned in the laboratory spectra up to 325 GHz. A precise set of the relevant rotational spectroscopic constants has been determined for each structure. We report non-detections of n- and i-butanal toward both sources, Sgr B2(N1S) and G+0.693-0.027. We find that n- and i-butanal are at least 2-6 and 6-18 times less abundant than acetaldehyde toward Sgr B2(N1S), respectively, and that n-butanal is at least 63 times less abundant than acetaldehyde toward G+0.693-0.027. Comparison with astrochemical models indicates good agreement between observed and simulated abundances (where available). Grain-surface chemistry appears sufficient to reproduce aldehyde ratios in G+0.693-0.027; gas-phase production may play a more active role in Sgr B2(N1S). Our astronomical results indicate that the family of interstellar aldehydes in the Galactic center region is characterized by a drop of one order of magnitude in abundance at each incrementation in the level of molecular complexity.

The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) contains most of the mass of our Galaxy but its star formation rate is one order of magnitude lower than in the Galactic disc. This is likely related to the fact that the bulk of the gas in the CMZ is in a warm ($>$100 K) and turbulent phase with little material in the pre-stellar phase. We present in this Letter observations of deuterium fractionation (D/H ratios) of HCN, HNC, HCO$^{+}$, and N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ towards the CMZ molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027. These observations clearly show, for the first time, the presence of a colder, denser, and less turbulent narrow component, with a line width of $\sim$9 km s$^{-1}$, in addition to the warm, less dense and turbulent broad component with a line width of $\sim$20 km s$^{-1}$. The very low D/H ratio $\le$6$\times$10$^{-5}$ for HCO$^{+}$ and N$_{2}$H$^{+}$, close to the cosmic value ($\sim$2.5$\times$10$^{-5}$), and the high D/H ratios $>$4$\times$10$^{-4}$ for HCN and HNC derived for the broad component, confirm the presence of high-temperatures deuteration routes for nitriles. For the narrow component we have derived D/H ratios $>$10$^{-4}$ and excitation temperatures of $7$ K for all molecules, suggesting kinetic temperatures $\le$30 K and H$_2$ densities $\ge$5$\times$10$^{4}$ cm$^{-3}$, at least one order of magnitude larger than for the broad component. The method presented in this Letter allows to identify clouds on the verge of star formation, i.e. under pre-stellar conditions, towards the CMZ. The substellar triple system VHS J125601.92$-$125723.9 is composed by an equal-mass M7.5 brown dwarf binary and a L7 low-mass substellar object. In this work, we aim to identify the origin of the radio emission occurring in the central binary of VHS 1256$-$1257 while discussing the expected mechanisms involved in the radio emission of ultracool dwarfs (UCDs). We observed this system with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, the European very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) Network, the enhanced Multi Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network, the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array, and the Atacama Large Millimetre Array at frequencies ranging from 5 GHz up to 345 GHz in several epochs during 2017, 2018, and 2019. We have found radio emission at 6 GHz and 33 GHz coincident with the expected position of the central binary of VHS~1256$-$1257. The Stokes I density flux detected were 73 $\pm$ 4 $\mu$Jy and 83 $\pm$ 13 $\mu$Jy, respectively, with no detectable circular polarisation or pulses. No emission is detected at higher frequencies (230 GHz and 345 GHz) nor at 5 GHz with VLBI arrays. The emission appears to be stable over almost 3 years at 6 GHz. To explain the constraints obtained both from the detections and non-detections we considered multiple scenarios including thermal and non-thermal emission, and different contributions from each component of the binary. Our results can be well explained by non-thermal gyrosynchrotron emission originating at radiation belts with a low plasma density (n$_e$ = 300$-$700 cm$^{-3}$), a moderate magnetic field strength (B $\approx$ 140 G), and an energy distribution of electrons following a power-law ($d N / d E \propto E^{- \delta}$) with $\delta$ fixed at 1.36. Supernova remnants (SNRs) contribute to regulate the star formation efficiency and evolution of galaxies. As they expand into the interstellar medium (ISM), they transfer vast amounts of energy and momentum that displace, compress and heat the surrounding material. Despite the extensive work in galaxy evolution models, it remains to be observationally validated to what extent the molecular ISM is affected by the interaction with SNRs. We use the first results of the ESO-ARO Public Spectroscopic Survey SHREC, to investigate the shock interaction between the SNR IC443 and the nearby molecular clump G. We use high sensitivity SiO(2-1) and H$^{13}$CO$^+$(1-0) maps obtained by SHREC together with SiO(1-0) observations obtained with the 40m telescope at the Yebes Observatory. We find that the bulk of the SiO emission is arising from the ongoing shock interaction between IC443 and clump G. The shocked gas shows a well ordered kinematic structure, with velocities blue-shifted with respect to the central velocity of the SNR, similar to what observed toward other SNR-cloud interaction sites. The shock compression enhances the molecular gas density, n(H$_2$), up to $>$10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$, a factor of >10 higher than the ambient gas density and similar to values required to ignite star formation. Finally, we estimate that up to 50\% of the momentum injected by IC443 is transferred to the interacting molecular material. Therefore the molecular ISM may represent an important momentum carrier in sites of SNR-cloud interactions., Comment: Accepted for Publication in MNRAS; 11 pages, 7 figures

We studied theoretically the cis-trans isomerization reactions of two astrophysically relevant acids, formic acid (HCOOH) and thioformic acid (HC(O)SH), where the latter has recently been discovered in space. We also searched for these molecules towards the hot core G31.41+0.31 to compare their abundances with the expected theoretical isomerization results. Our results demonstrate that these isomerizations are viable in the conditions of the ISM due to ground-state tunneling effects, which allow the system to reach the thermodynamic equilibrium at moderately low temperatures. At very low temperatures (Tkin 10 K), the reaction rate constants for the cis to trans isomerizations are very small, which implies that the cis isomers should not be formed under cold ISM conditions. This is in disagreement with observations of the cis/trans isomers of HCOOH in cold cores where the cis isomer is found to be 5-6% the trans isomer. At high temperatures (150-300 K), our theoretical data not only match the observed behaviour of the trans/cis abundance ratios for HCOOH (the cis form is undetected), but they support our tentative detection of the trans and, for the first time in the insterstellar medium, of the cis isomer of HC(O)SH towards the hot molecular core G31.41+0.31 (with a measured trans/cis abundance ratio of 3.7). While the trans/cis ratio for HC(O)SH in the ISM depends on the relative stability of the isomers, the trans/cis ratio for HCOOH cannot be explained by isomerization, and it is determined by other competitive chemical processes, Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables

Little is known about the chemistry of isocyanates (compounds with the functional group R-N=C=O) in the interstellar medium, as only four of them have been detected so far: isocyanate radical (NCO), isocyanic acid (HNCO), N-protonated isocyanic acid (H$_2$NCO$^+$) and methyl isocyanate (CH$_3$NCO). The molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027, located in the Galactic Centre, represents an excellent candidate to search for new isocyanates since it exhibits high abundances of the simplest ones, HNCO and CH$_3$NCO. After CH$_3$NCO, the next complex isocyanates are ethyl isocyanate (C$_2$H$_5$NCO) and vinyl isocyanate (C$_2$H$_3$NCO). Their detection in the ISM would enhance our understanding of the formation of these compounds in space. We have detected C$_2$H$_5$NCO and H$_2$NCO$^+$ towards G+0.693-0.027 (the former for the first time in the interstellar medium) with molecular abundances of (4.7$-$7.3)$\times$10$^{-11}$ and (1.0$-$1.5)$\times$10$^{-11}$, respectively. A ratio CH$_3$NCO / C$_2$H$_5$NCO = 8$\pm$1 is obtained; therefore the relative abundance determined for HNCO:CH$_3$NCO:C$_2$H$_5$NCO is 1:1/55:1/447, which implies a decrease by more than one order of magnitude going progressively from HNCO to CH$_3$NCO and to C$_2$H$_5$NCO. This is similar to what has been found for e.g. alcohols and thiols and suggests that C$_2$H$_5$NCO is likely formed on the surface of dust grains. In addition, we have obtained column density ratios of HNCO / NCO > 269, HNCO / H$_2$NCO$^+$ $\sim$ 2100 and C$_2$H$_3$NCO / C$_2$H$_5$NCO~<~4. A comparison of the Methyl~/~Ethyl ratios for isocyanates (-NCO), alcohols (-OH), formiates (HCOO-), nitriles (-CN) and thiols (-SH) is performed and shows that ethyl-derivatives may be formed more efficiently for the N-bearing molecules than for the O- and S-bearing molecules., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures; accepted in A&A

We report SOFIA-upGREAT spectroscopic imaging of the [C II] 158um spectral line, as well as a number of [O I] 63um spectra, across a 67x45 pc field toward the Sgr B region in our Galactic center. The fully-sampled and velocity-resolved [C II] images have 0.55 pc spatial and 1 km/s velocity resolutions. We find that Sgr B extends as a coherent structure spanning some 34 pc along the Galactic plane. Bright [C II] emission encompasses Sgr B1 (G0.5-0.0), the G0.6-0.0 HII region, and passes behind and beyond the luminous star forming cores toward Sgr B2 (G0.7-0.0). Sgr B is a major contributor to the entire Galactic center's [C II] luminosity, with surface brightness comparable to [C II] from the Arches region. [C II], 70um, and 20cm emission share nearly identical spatial distributions. Combined with the lack of [C II] self-absorption, this indicates that these probes trace UV on the near surfaces of more extended clouds visible in CO isotopologues and 160um continuum. Stars from regions of local star formation likely dominate the UV field. Photodissociation regions and HII regions contribute similar amounts of [C II] flux. The extreme star formation cores of Sgr B2 contribute negligible amounts to the total [C II] intensity from the Sgr B region. Velocity fields and association with a narrow dust lane indicate that they may have been produced in a local cloud-cloud collision. The cores are likely local analogs of the intense star formation regions where ideas to explain the "C+ deficit" in ultra-luminous galaxies can be tested., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures. We report here the first detection in the interstellar medium of the cyanomidyl radical (HNCN). Using the Yebes 40m and the IRAM 30m telescopes, we have targeted the doublets of the $N$=2$-$1, 4$-$3, 5$-$4, 6$-$5, and 7$-$6 transitions of HNCN toward the molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027. We have detected three unblended lines of HNCN, these are the $N$=6$-$5 doublet and one line of the $N$=4$-$3 transition. Additionally we present one line of the $N$=5$-$4 transition partially blended with emission from other species. The Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium best fit to the data gives a molecular abundance of (0.91$\pm$0.05)$\times$10$^{-10}$ with respect to H$_2$. The relatively low abundance of this species in G+0.693-0.027, and its high reactivity, suggest that HNCN is possibly produced by gas-phase chemistry. Our work shows that this highly reactive molecule is present in interstellar space, and thus it represents a plausible precursor of larger prebiotic molecules with the NCN backbone such as cyanamide (NH$_2$CN), carbodiimide (HNCNH) and formamidine (NH$_2$CHNH)., Comment: Accepted in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Letters

G+0.693-0.03 is a quiescent molecular cloud located within the Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2) star-forming complex. Recent spectral surveys have shown that it represents one of the most prolific repositories of complex organic species in the Galaxy. The origin of such chemical complexity, along with the small-scale physical structure and properties of G+0.693-0.03, remains a mystery. In this paper, we report the study of multiple molecules with interferometric observations in combination with single-dish data in G+0.693-0.03. Despite the lack of detection of continuum source, we find small-scale (0.2 pc) structures within this cloud. The analysis of the molecular emission of typical shock tracers such as SiO, HNCO, and CH$_3$OH unveiled two molecular components, peaking at velocities of 57 and 75 km s$^{-1}$. They are found to be interconnected in both space and velocity. The position-velocity diagrams show features that match with the observational signatures of a cloud-cloud collision. Additionally, we detect three series of class \rom{1} methanol masers known to appear in shocked gas, supporting the cloud-cloud collision scenario. From the maser emission we provide constraints on the gas kinetic temperatures ($\sim$30-150 K) and H$_2$ densities (10$^4$-10$^5$ cm$^{-2}$). These properties are similar to those found for the starburst galaxy NGC253 also using class \rom{1} methanol masers, suggested to be associated with a cloud-cloud collision. We conclude that shocks driven by the possible cloud-cloud collision is likely the most important mechanism responsible for the high level of chemical complexity observed in G+0.693-0.03., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The lines of HOC$^+$, HCO and CO$^+$ are considered good tracers of photon-dominated regions (PDRs) and X-ray dominated regions. We study these tracers towards regions of the Sgr B2 cloud selected to be affected by different heating mechanisms. We find the lowest values of the column density ratios of HCO$^+$ versus HOC$^+$, HCO and CO$^+$ in dense HII gas, where UV photons dominate the heating and chemistry of gas. HOC$^+$, HCO and CO$^+$ abundances and the above ratios are compared with those of chemical modeling, finding that high temperature chemistry, a cosmic-ray ionization rate of 10$^{-16}$ s$^{-1}$ and timescales $>$10$^{5.0}$ years explain well the HOC$^+$ abundances in quiescent Sgr B2 regions, while shocks are also needed to explain the highest HCO abundances derived for these regions. CO$^+$ is mainly formed in PDRs since the highest CO$^+$ abundances of $\sim$(6-10)$\times$10$^{-10}$ are found in HII regions with electron densities $>$540 cm$^{-3}$ and that CO$^+$ emission is undetected in quiescent gas. Between the ratios, the HCO$^+$/HCO ratio is sensitive to the electron density as it shows different values in dense and diffuse HII regions. We compare SiO J=2-1 emission maps of Sgr B2 with X-ray maps from 2004 and 2012. One known spot shown on the 2012 X-ray map is likely associated with molecular gas at velocities of 15-25 km s$^{-1}$. We also derive the X-ray ionization rate of $\sim$10$^{-19}$ s$^{-1}$ for Sgr B2 regions pervaded by X-rays in 2004, which is quite low to affect the chemistry of the molecular gas.

In this paper we present the detailed formalism at the core of the Spectral Line Identification and Modelling (SLIM) within the MAdrid Data CUBe Analysis (MADCUBA) package and their main data handling functionalities. These tools have been developed to visualize, analyze and model large spectroscopic data cubes. We present the highly interactive on-the-fly visualization and modelling tools of MADCUBA and SLIM, which includes an stand-alone spectroscopic database. The parameters stored therein are used to solve the full radiative transfer equation under Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE). SLIM provides tools to generate synthetic LTE model spectra based on input physical parameters of column density, excitation temperature, velocity, line width and source size. SLIM also provides an automatic fitting algorithm to obtain the physical parameters (with their associated errors) better fitting the observations. Synthetic spectra can be overlayed in the data cubes/spectra to easy the task of multi-molecular line identification and modelling.We present the Java-based MADCUBA and its internal module SLIM packages which provide all the necessary tools for manipulation and analysis of spectroscopic data cubes. We describe in detail the spectroscopic fitting equations and make use of this tool to explore the breaking conditions and implicit errors of commonly used approximations in the literature. Easy-to-use tools like MADCUBA allow the users to derive the physical information from spectroscopic data without the need of resourcing to simple approximations. We investigate the fueling and the feedback of nuclear activity in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1068, by studying the distribution and kinematics of molecular gas in the torus and its connections. We use ALMA to image the emission of a set of molecular gas tracers in the circumnuclear disk (CND) and the torus of the galaxy using the CO(2-1), CO(3-2) and HCO+(4-3) lines with spatial resolutions ~0.03"-0.09"(2-6pc). ALMA resolves the CND as an asymmetric ringed disk of D~400pc-size and mass of ~1.4x10^8 Msun. The inner edge of the ring is associated with edge-brightened arcs of NIR polarized emission identified with the working surface of the AGN ionized wind. ALMA proves the existence of a molecular torus of M_torus ~ 3x10^5Msun, which extends over a large range of spatial scales D=10-30pc around the central engine. The new observations evidence the density radial stratification of the torus: the HCO+(4-3) torus, with a full size D=11pc, is a factor of 2-3 smaller than its CO(2-1) and CO(3-2) counterparts, which have full-sizes D=26pc and D=28pc, respectively. The torus is connected to the CND through a network of gas streamers. The kinematics of molecular gas show strong departures from circular motions in the torus, the gas streamers, and the CND. These velocity distortions are interconnected and are part of a 3D outflow that reflects the effects of AGN feedback on the kinematics of molecular gas across a wide range of spatial scales. We conclude that a wide-angle AGN wind launched from the accretion disk is impacting a sizeable fraction of the gas inside the torus (~0.4-0.6 x M_torus). However, a large gas reservoir (~1.2-1.8 x 10^5Msun) close to the equatorial plane of the torus remains unaffected by the AGN wind and can continue fueling the AGN for ~1-4Myr. We present interferometric observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) of the free-free continuum and recombination line emission at 1 and 3mm of the "Red Square Nebula" surrounding the B[e]-type star MWC922. The unknown distance to the source is usually taken to be d=1.7-3 kpc. The unprecedented angular resolution (up to ~0.02arcsec) and exquisite sensitivity of these data unveil, for the first time, the structure and kinematics of the emerging, compact ionized region at its center. We imaged the line emission of H30a and H39a, previously detected with single-dish observations, as well as of H51epsilon, H55gamma, and H63delta, detected for the first time in this work. The line emission is seen over a full velocity range of ~180 km/s arising in a region of diameter <0.14arcsec (less than a few hundred au) in the maser line H30a, which is the most intense transition reported here. We resolve the spatio-kinematic structure of a nearly edge-on disk rotating around a central mass of ~10Msun (d=1.7 kpc) or ~18Msun (d=3 kpc), assuming Keplerian rotation. Our data also unveil a fast (~100 km/s) bipolar ejection (a jet?) orthogonal to the disk. In addition, a slow (<15km/s) wind may be lifting off the disk. Both, the slow and the fast winds are found to be rotating in a similar manner to the ionized layers of the disk. Aims: We study the spatial distribution and kinematics of water emission in a ~64 pc$^2$ region of the Galactic Center (GC) around Sgr A*. We also analyze the water excitation to derive the physical conditions and water abundances in the CND and the `quiescent clouds'. Methods: We presented the integrated intensity maps of the ortho 1$_{10}-1_{01}$, and para 2$_{02}-1_{11}$ and 1$_{11}-0_{00}$ water transitions observed with the HIFI instrument on board Herschel. To study the water excitation we used ground state ortho and para H$_2^{18}$O transitions. In our study, we also used SPIRE continuum measurements of the CND. Using a non-LTE radiative transfer code, the water line profiles and dust continuum were modeled. We also used a rotating ring model to reproduce the CND kinematics represented by the PV diagram. Results: We identify the water emission arising from the CND, the Western Streamer, and the 20 and 50 km s$^{-1}$ clouds. The ortho water maps show absorption structures in the range of [-220,10] km s$^{-1}$. The PV diagram shows that the 2$_{02}-1_{11}$ H$_2$O emission traces the CND. We derive high X$_{H_2O}$ of $\sim$(0.1-1.3)$\times$10$^{-5}$, V$_t$ of 14-23 km s$^{-1}$ and T$_d$ of 15-45 K for the CND, and the lower X$_{\rm H_2O}$ of 4$\times$10$^{-8}$ and V$_t$ of 9 km s$^{-1}$ for the 20 km s$^{-1}$ cloud. Collisional excitation and dust effects are responsible for the water excitation in the southwest lobe of the CND and the 20 km s$^{-1}$ cloud, whereas only collisions can account for the water excitation in the northeast lobe of the CND. We propose that the water vapor in the CND is caused by grain sputtering by shocks of 10-20 km s$^{-1}$, with some contribution of high temperature and cosmic-ray chemistries plus a PDR chemistry. The low X$_{\rm H_2O}$ derived for the 20 km s$^{-1}$ cloud could be partially a consequence of the water freeze-out on grains., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

Theories of a pre-RNA world suggest that glycolonitrile (HOCH$_2$CN) is a key species in the process of ribonucleotide assembly, which is considered as a molecular precursor of nucleic acids. In this Letter, we report the first detection of this pre-biotic molecule in the interstellar medium (ISM) by using ALMA data obtained at frequencies between 86.5$\,$GHz and 266.5$\,$GHz toward the Solar-type protostar IRAS16293-2422 B. A total of 15 unblended transitions of HOCH$_2$CN were identified. Our analysis indicates the presence of a cold (T$\rm _{ex}$=24$\pm$8$\,$K) and a warm (T$\rm _{ex}$=158$\pm$38$\,$K) component meaning that this molecule is present in both the inner hot corino and the outer cold envelope of IRAS16293 B. The relative abundance with respect to H$_2$ is (6.5$\pm$0.6)$\times$10$^{-11}$ and $\geq$(6$\pm$2)$\times$10$^{-10}$ for the warm and cold components respectively. Our chemical modelling seems to underproduce the observed abundance for both the warm and cold component under various values of the cosmic-ray ionisation rate ($\zeta$). We report the first detection in the interstellar medium of the Z-isomer of cyanomethanimine (HNCHCN), an HCN dimer proposed as precursor of adenine. We identified six transitions of Z-cyanomethanimine, along with five transitions of E-cyanomethanimine, using IRAM 30m observations towards the Galactic Center quiescent molecular cloud G+0.693. The Z-isomer has a column density of (2.0$\pm$0.6)$\times$10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ and an abundance of 1.5$\times$10$^{-9}$. The relative abundance ratio between the isomers is [Z/E]$\sim$6. This value cannot be explained by the two chemical formation routes previously proposed (gas-phase and grain surface), which predicts abundances ratios between 0.9 and 1.5. The observed [Z/E] ratio is in good agreement with thermodynamic equilibrium at the gas kinetic temperature (130$-$210 K). Since isomerization is not possible in the ISM, the two species may be formed at high temperature. New chemical models, including surface chemistry on dust grains and gas-phase reactions, should be explored to explain our findings. We present an unbiased spectral line survey toward the Galactic Centre (GC) quiescent giant molecular cloud (QGMC), G+0.693 using the GBT and IRAM 30$\,$ telescopes. Our study highlights an extremely rich organic inventory of abundant amounts of nitrogen (N)-bearing species in a source without signatures of star formation. We report the detection of 17 N-bearing species in this source, of which 8 are complex organic molecules (COMs). A comparison of the derived abundances relative to H$_2$ is made across various galactic and extragalactic environments. We conclude that the unique chemistry in this source is likely to be dominated by low-velocity shocks with X-rays/cosmic rays also playing an important role in the chemistry. Like previous findings obtained for O-bearing molecules, our results for N-bearing species suggest a more efficient hydrogenation of these species on dust grains in G+0.693 than in hot cores in the Galactic disk, as a consequence of the low dust temperatures coupled with energetic processing by X-ray/cosmic ray radiation in the GC., Comment: 24 pages, 23 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a study of diffuse extended ionised gas toward three clouds located in the Galactic Centre (GC). One line of sight (LOS) is toward the 20 km s$^{-1}$ cloud (LOS$-$0.11) in the Sgr A region, another LOS is toward the 50 km s$^{-1}$ cloud (LOS$-$0.02), also in Sgr A, while the third is toward the Sgr B2 cloud (LOS+0.693). The emission from the ionised gas is detected from H$n\alpha$ and H$m\beta$ radio recombination lines (RRLs). He$n\alpha$ and He$m\beta$ RRL emission is detected with the same $n$ and $m$ as those from the hydrogen RRLs only toward LOS+0.693. RRLs probe gas with positive and negative velocities toward the two Sgr A sources. The H$m\beta$ to H$n\alpha$ ratios reveal that the ionised gas is emitted under local thermodynamic equilibrium conditions in these regions. We find a He to H mass fraction of 0.29$\pm$0.01 consistent with the typical GC value, supporting the idea that massive stars have increased the He abundance compared to its primordial value. Physical properties are derived for the studied sources. We propose that the negative velocity component of both Sgr A sources is part of gas streams considered previously to model the GC cloud kinematics. Associated massive stars with what are presumably the closest HII regions to LOS$-$0.11 (positive velocity gas), LOS$-$0.02 and LOS+0.693 could be the main sources of UV photons ionising the gas. The negative velocity components of both Sgr A sources might be ionised by the same massive stars, but only if they are in the same gas stream.

Phosphorus (P) is one of the essential elements for life due to its central role in biochemical processes. Recent searches have shown that P-bearing molecules (in particular PN and PO) are present in star-forming regions, although their formation routes remain poorly understood. In this Letter, we report observations of PN and PO towards seven molecular clouds located in the Galactic Center, which are characterized by different types of chemistry. PN is detected in five out of seven sources, whose chemistry is thought to be shock-dominated. The two sources with PN non-detections correspond to clouds exposed to intense UV/X-rays/cosmic-ray radiation. PO is detected only towards the cloud G+0.693$-$0.03, with a PO/PN abundance ratio of $\sim$1.5. Aims: To reveal the morphology, chemical composition, kinematics and to establish the main processes prevalent in the gas at the foot points of the giant molecular loops (GMLs) in the Galactic center region Methods: Using the 22-m Mopra telescope, we mapped the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud, placed at the foot points of a giant molecular loop, in 3-mm range molecular lines. To derive the molecular hydrogen column density, we also observed the $^{13}$CO $(2-1)$ line at 1 mm using the 12-m APEX telescope. From the 3 mm observations 12 molecular species were detected, namely HCO$^+$, HCN, H$^{13}$CN, HNC, SiO, CS, CH$_3$OH, N$_2$H$^+$, SO, HNCO, OCS, and HC$_3$N. Results: Maps revealing the morphology and kinematics of the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud in different molecules are presented. We identified six main molecular complexes. We derive fractional abundances in 11 selected positions of the different molecules assuming local thermodynamical equilibrium. Conclusions: Most of the fractional abundances derived for the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud are very similar over the whole cloud. However, the fractional abundances of some molecules show significant difference with respect to those measured in the central molecular zone (CMZ). The abundances of the shock tracer SiO are very similar between the GMLs and the CMZ. The methanol emission is the most abundant specie in the GMLs. This indicates that the gas is likely affected by moderate $\sim $ 30 km s$^{-1}$ or even high velocity (50 km s$^{-1}$) shocks, consistent with the line profile observed toward one of the studied position. A far-infrared observatory such as the {\it SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics} ({\it SPICA}), with its unprecedented spectroscopic sensitivity, would unveil the role of feedback in galaxy evolution during the last $\sim10$ Gyr of the Universe ($z=1.5-2$), through the use of far- and mid-infrared molecular and ionic fine structure lines that trace outflowing and infalling gas. Outflowing gas is identified in the far-infrared through P-Cygni line shapes and absorption blueshifted wings in molecular lines with high dipolar moments, and through emission line wings of fine-structure lines of ionized gas. We quantify the detectability of galaxy-scale massive molecular and ionized outflows as a function of redshift in AGN-dominated, starburst-dominated, and main-sequence galaxies, explore the detectability of metal-rich inflows in the local Universe, and describe the most significant synergies with other current and future observatories that will measure feedback in galaxies via complementary tracers at other wavelengths., Comment: This paper belongs to the SPICA Special Issue on PASA. We present a systematic survey of multiple velocity-resolved H$_2$O spectra using Herschel/HIFI towards nine nearby actively star forming galaxies. The ground-state and low-excitation lines (E$_{\rm up}\,\le 130\,{\rm K}$) show profiles with emission and absorption blended together, while absorption-free medium-excitation lines ($130\,{\rm K}\, \le\, E_{\rm up}\,\le\,350\,{\rm K}$) typically display line shapes similar to CO. We analyze the HIFI observation together with archival SPIRE/PACS H$_2$O data using a state-of-the-art 3D radiative transfer code which includes the interaction between continuum and line emission. The water excitation models are combined with information on the dust- and CO spectral line energy distribution to determine the physical structure of the interstellar medium (ISM). We identify two ISM components that are common to all galaxies: A warm ($T_{\rm dust}\,\sim\,40-70\,{\rm K}$), dense ($n({\rm H})\,\sim\,10^5-10^6\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$) phase which dominates the emission of medium-excitation H$_2$O lines. This gas phase also dominates the FIR emission and the CO intensities for $J_{\rm up} > 8$. In addition a cold ($T_{\rm dust}\,\sim\,20-30\,{\rm K}$), dense ($n({\rm H})\sim\,10^4- 10^5\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$) more extended phase is present. It outputs the emission in the low-excitation H$_2$O lines and typically also produces the prominent line absorption features. For the two ULIRGs in our sample (Arp 220 and Mrk 231) an even hotter and more compact (R$_s\,\le\,100$ pc) region is present which is possibly linked to AGN activity. We find that collisions dominate the water excitation in the cold gas and for lines with $E_{\rm up}\le300\,{\rm K}$ and $E_{\rm up}\le800\,{\rm K}$ in the warm and hot component, respectively. We present the first detection of the ortho-H2O 4_23-3_30 transition at 448 GHz in space. We observed this transition in the local (z = 0.010) luminous infrared (IR) galaxy ESO 320-G030 (IRAS F11506-3851) using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The water 4_23-3_30 emission, which originates in the highly obscured nucleus of this galaxy, is spatially resolved over a region of ~65 pc in diameter and shows a regular rotation pattern compatible with the global molecular and ionized gas kinematics. The line profile is symmetric and well fitted by a Gaussian with an integrated flux of 37.0 +- 0.7 Jy km s-1 . Models predict this water transition as a potential collisionally excited maser transition. On the contrary, in this galaxy, we find that the 4_23-3_30 emission is primarily excited by the intense far-IR radiation field present in its nucleus. According to our modeling, this transition is a probe of deeply buried galaxy nuclei thanks to the high dust optical depths (tau_100{\mu}m > 1, N_H > 1e24 cm-2) required to efficiently excite it., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters; 4 pages, 5 figures

We report the results from a pilot search for radio recombination line (RRL) emission at millimeter wavelengths in a small sample of pre-planetary nebulae (pPNe) and young PNe (yPNe) with emerging central ionized regions. Observations of the H30\alpha, H31a, H39a, H41a, H48b, H49b, H51b, and H55g lines at 1 and 3mm have been performed with the IRAM 30 m radio telescope. These lines are excellent probes of the dense inner (<~150 au) and heavily obscured regions of these objects, where the yet unknown agents for PN-shaping originate. We detected mm-RRLs in three objects: CRL 618, MWC 922, and M 2-9. For CRL 618, the only pPN with previous published detections of H41a, H35a, and H30a emission, we find significant changes in the line profiles indicating that current observations are probing regions of the ionized wind with larger expansion velocities and mass-loss rate than ~29 years ago. In the case of MWC 922, we observe a drastic transition from single-peaked profiles at 3mm to double-peaked profiles at 1mm, which is consistent with maser amplification of the highest frequency lines; the observed line profiles are compatible with rotation and expansion of the ionized gas, probably arranged in a disk+wind system around a ~5-10 Msun central mass. In M 2-9, the mm-RRL emission appears to be tracing a recent mass outburst by one of the stars of the central binary system. We present the results from non-LTE line and continuum radiative transfer models, which enables us to constrain the structure, kinematics, and physical conditions (electron temperature and density) of the ionized cores of our sample. We report the detection of the prebiotic molecule CH3NCO in a solar-type protostar, IRAS16293-2422 B. A significant abundance of this species on the surface of the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko has been proposed, and it has recently been detected in hot cores around high-mass protostars. We observed IRAS16293-2422 B with ALMA in the 90 GHz to 265 GHz range, and detected 8 unblended transitions of CH3NCO. From our Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium analysis we derived an excitation temperature of 110+-19 K and a column density of (4.0+-0.3)x10^15 cm^-2 , which results in an abundance of <=(1.4+-0.1)x10^-10 with respect to molecular hydrogen. This implies a CH3NCO/HNCO and CH3NCO/NH2CHO column density ratios of ~0.08. Our modelling of the chemistry of CH3NCO suggests that both ice surface and gas phase formation reactions of this molecule are needed to explain the observations.

The detection of organic molecules with increasing complexity and potential biological relevance is opening the possibility to understand the formation of the building blocks of life in the interstellar medium. One of the families of molecules with astrobiological interest are the esters, whose simplest member, methyl formate, is rather abundant in star-forming regions. The next step in the chemical complexity of esters is ethyl formate, C$_2$H$_5$OCHO. Only two detections of this species have been reported so far, which strongly limits our understanding of how complex molecules are formed in the interstellar medium. We have searched for ethyl formate towards the W51 e2 hot molecular core, one of the most chemically rich sources in the Galaxy and one of the most promising regions to study prebiotic chemistry, especially after the recent discovery of the P$-$O bond, key in the formation of DNA. We have analyzed a spectral line survey towards the W51 e2 hot molecular core, which covers 44 GHz in the 1, 2 and 3 mm bands, carried out with the IRAM 30m telescope. We report the detection of the trans and gauche conformers of ethyl formate. A Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium analysis indicates that the excitation temperature is 78$\pm$10 K and that the two conformers have similar source-averaged column densities of (2.0$\pm$0.3)$\times$10$^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$ and an abundance of $\sim$10$^{-8}$. We compare the observed molecular abundances of ethyl formate with different competing chemical models based on grain surface and gas-phase chemistry. We propose that grain-surface chemistry may have a dominant role in the formation of ethyl formate (and other complex organic molecules) in hot molecular cores, rather than reactions in the gas phase., Comment: Accepted in A&A; 11 pages, 6 figures, 7 Tables

Future astrophysics and cosmic microwave background space missions operating in the far-infrared to millimetre part of the spectrum will require very large arrays of ultra-sensitive detectors in combination with high multiplexing factors and efficient low-noise and low-power readout systems. We have developed a demonstrator system suitable for such applications. The system combines a 961 pixel imaging array based upon Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) with a readout system capable of reading out all pixels simultaneously with only one readout cable pair and a single cryogenic amplifier. We evaluate, in a representative environment, the system performance in terms of sensitivity, dynamic range, optical efficiency, cosmic ray rejection, pixel-pixel crosstalk and overall yield at at an observation centre frequency of 850 GHz and 20% fractional bandwidth. The overall system has an excellent sensitivity, with an average detector sensitivity NEPdet=3x10^-19 W/rt(Hz) measured using a thermal calibration source. At a loading power per pixel of 50fW we demonstrate white, photon noise limited detector noise down to 300 mHz. The dynamic range would allow the detection of 1 Jy bright sources within the field of view without tuning the readout of the detectors. The expected dead time due to cosmic ray interactions, when operated in an L2 or a similar far-Earth orbit, is found to be <4%. Additionally, the achieved pixel yield is 83% and the crosstalk between the pixels is <-30dB. This demonstrates that MKID technology can provide multiplexing ratios on the order of a 1000 with state-of-the-art single pixel performance, and that the technology is now mature enough to be considered for future space based observatories and experiments., Comment: Resubmitted manuscript after review A&A (2016) 16 pages, 10 figures

Phosphorus is a crucial element in biochemistry, especially the P-O bond, which is key for the formation of the backbone of the deoxyribonucleic acid. So far, PO has only been detected towards the envelope of evolved stars, and never towards star-forming regions. We report the first detections of PO towards two massive star-forming regions, W51 e1/e2 and W3(OH), using data from the IRAM 30m telescope. PN has also been detected towards the two regions. The abundance ratio PO/PN is 1.8 and 3 for W51 and W3(OH), respectively. Our chemical model indicates that the two molecules are chemically related and are formed via gas-phase ion-molecule and neutral-neutral reactions during the cold collapse. The molecules freeze out onto grains at the end of the collapse and desorb during the warm-up phase once the temperature reaches 35 K. Similar abundances of the two species are expected during a period of 5x10^{4} yr at the early stages of the warm-up phase, when the temperature is in the range 35-90 K. The observed molecular abundances of 10^{-10} are predicted by the model if a relatively high initial abundance of 5x10^{-9} of depleted phosphorus is assumed., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 6 tables. We explore the potential of imaging vibrationally excited molecular emission at high angular resolution to better understand the morphology and physical structure of the dense gas in Arp~220 and to gain insight into the nature of the nuclear powering sources. Vibrationally excited emission of HCN is detected in both nuclei with a very high ratio relative to the total $L_{FIR}$, higher than in any other observed galaxy and well above what is observed in Galactic hot cores. HCN $v_2=1f$ is observed to be marginally resolved in $\sim60\times50$~pc regions inside the dusty $\sim100$~pc sized nuclear cores. Its emission is centered on our derived individual nuclear velocities based on HCO$^+$ emission ($V_{WN}=5342\pm4$ and $V_{EN}=5454\pm8$~\kms, for the western and eastern nucleus, respectively). With virial masses within $r\sim25-30$~pc based on the HCN~$v_2=1f$ line widths, we estimate gas surface densities (gas fraction $f_g=0.1$) of $3\pm0.3\times10^4~M_\odot~\rm pc^{-2}$ (WN) and $1.1\pm0.1\times10^4~M_\odot~\rm pc^{-2}$ (EN). The $4-3/3-2$ flux density ratio could be consistent with optically thick emission, which would further constrain the size of the emitting region to $>15$~pc (EN) and $>22$~pc (WN). The absorption systems that may hide up to $70\%$ of the HCN and HCO$^+$ emission are found at velocities of $-50$~\kms~(EN) and $6$, $-140$, and $-575$~\kms (WN) relative to velocities of the nuclei. Blueshifted absorptions are the evidence of outflowing motions from both nuclei. The bright vibrational emission implies the existence of a hot dust region radiatively pumping these transitions. We find evidence of a strong temperature gradient that would be responsible for both the HCN $v_2$ pumping and the absorbed profiles from the vibrational ground state as a result of both continuum and self-absorption by cooler foreground gas., Comment: 14 pages accepted for publication in A&A

The circumnuclear disk (CND) of the Galactic Center is exposed to many energetic phenomena coming from the supermassive black hole Sgr A* and stellar activities. These energetic activities can affect the chemical composition in the CND by the interaction with UV-photons, cosmic-rays, X-rays, and shock waves. We aim to constrain the physical conditions present in the CND by chemical modeling of observed molecular species detected towards it. We analyzed a selected set of molecular line data taken toward a position in the southwest lobe of the CND with the IRAM 30m and APEX 12-meter telescopes and derived the column density of each molecule using a large velocity gradient (LVG) analysis. The determined chemical composition is compared with a time-dependent gas-grain chemical model based on the UCL\_CHEM code that includes the effects of shock waves with varying physical parameters. Molecules such as CO, HCN, HCO$^+$, HNC, CS, SO, SiO, NO, CN, H$_2$CO, HC$_3$N, N$_2$H$^+$ and H$_3$O$^+$ are detected and their column densities are obtained. Total hydrogen densities obtained from LVG analysis range between $2 \times 10^4$ and $1 \times 10^6\,$cm$^{-3}$ and most species indicate values around several $\times 10^5\,$cm$^{-3}$, which are lower than values corresponding to the Roche limit, which shows that the CND is tidally unstable. The chemical models show good agreement with the observations in cases where the density is $\sim10^4\,$cm$^{-3}$, the cosmic-ray ionization rate is high, $>10^{-15} \,$s$^{-1}$, or shocks with velocities $> 40\,$km s$^{-1}$ have occurred. Comparison of models and observations favors a scenario where the cosmic-ray ionization rate in the CND is high, but precise effects of other factors such as shocks, density structures, UV-photons and X-rays from the Sgr A* must be examined with higher spatial resolution data., Comment: 17 Pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is called to revolutionise essentially all areas of Astrophysics. With a collecting area of about a square kilometre, the SKA will be a transformational instrument, and its scientific potential will go beyond the interests of astronomers. Its technological challenges and huge cost requires a multinational effort, and Europe has recognised this by putting the SKA on the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). The Spanish SKA White Book is the result of the coordinated effort of 120 astronomers from 40 different research centers. We used the Very Large Array to carry out a multi-epoch radio continuum monitoring of the Orion Nebula Cluster and Orion Molecular Cloud. Our observations reveal the presence of 19 sources. With the exception of the sources BN and C the sources show variability between the different epochs. We have found tentative evidence of variability in the massive object related with source I. Our observations also confirm radio flux density variations of a factor >2 on timescales of hours to days in 5 sources. One of these flaring sources, OHC-E, has been detected for the first time. We conclude that the radio emission arises from: i) highly-variable non-thermal gyrosynchrotron emission produced by electrons accelerated in the magnetospheres of pre-main sequence stars; ii) thermal emission from ionized gas and/or heated dust around massive objects and proplyds. Combining our sample with other radio monitoring and a X-ray catalog, we have studied the properties of 51 radio/X-ray stars. We have found severals hints of a direct relation between the X-ray activity and the mechanisms responsible for (at least some fraction of) the radio emission. We have estimated a radio flaring rate of 0.14 flares day-1 in the densest stellar cluster of the region, suggesting that radio flares from young stars are more common events than previously thought., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures. Herschel/PACS observations of 29 local (Ultra-)Luminous Infrared Galaxies, including both starburst and AGN-dominated sources as diagnosed in the mid-infrared/optical, show that the equivalent width of the absorbing OH 65 um Pi_{3/2} J=9/2-7/2 line (W_{eq}(OH65)) with lower level energy E_{low}~300 K, is anticorrelated with the [C ii]158 um line to far-infrared luminosity ratio, and correlated with the far-infrared luminosity per unit gas mass and with the 60-to-100 um far-infrared color. While all sources are in the active L_{IR}/M_{H2}>50 Lsun/Msun mode as derived from previous CO line studies, the OH65 absorption shows a bimodal distribution with a discontinuity at L_{FIR}/M_{H2}~100 Lsun/Msun. In the most buried sources, OH65 probes material partially responsible for the silicate 9.7 um absorption. Combined with observations of the OH 71 um Pi_{1/2} J=7/2-5/2 doublet (E_{low}~415 K), radiative transfer models characterized by the equivalent dust temperature, Tdust, and the continuum optical depth at 100 um, tau_{100}, indicate that strong [C ii]158 um deficits are associated with far-IR thick (tau_{100}>~0.7, N_{H}>~10^{24} cm^{-2}), warm (Tdust>~60 K) structures where the OH 65 um absorption is produced, most likely in circumnuclear disks/tori/cocoons. With their high L_{FIR}/M_{H2} ratios and columns, the presence of these structures is expected to give rise to strong [C ii] deficits. W_{eq}(OH65) probes the fraction of infrared luminosity arising from these compact/warm environments, which is >~30-50% in sources with high W_{eq}({OH65}). Sources with high W_{eq}({OH65}) have surface densities of both L_{IR} and M_{H2} higher than inferred from the half-light (CO or UV/optical) radius, tracing coherent structures that represent the most buried/active stage of (circum)nuclear starburst-AGN co-evolution., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present the results of two Mopra 3-mm spectral line surveys of the Lines of Sight (LOS) toward the Galactic Center (GC) molecular complexes Sgr B2 (LOS+0.693) and Sgr A (LOS-0.11). The spectra covered the frequency ranges of ~77-93 GHz and ~105-113 GHz. We have detected 38 molecular species and 25 isotopologues. The isotopic ratios derived from column density ratios are consistent with the canonical values, indicating that chemical isotopic fractionation and/or selective photodissociation can be considered negligible (<10%) for the GC physical conditions. The derived abundance and rotational temperatures are very similar for both LOSs, indicating very similar chemical and excitation conditions for the molecular gas in the GC. The excitation conditions are also very similar to those found for the nucleus of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. We report for the first time the detection of HCO and HOC+ emission in LOS+0.693. Our comparison of the abundance ratios between CS, HCO, HOC+ and HCO+ found in the two LOSs with those in typical Galactic photodissociation regions (PDRs) and starbursts galaxies does not show any clear trend to distinguish between UV and X-ray induced chemistries. We propose that the CS/HOC+ ratio could be used as a tracer of the PDR components in the molecular clouds in the nuclei of galaxies.

We present new CO and C^o line measurements of the compact circumnuclear disk in the center of NGC 128 (Centaurus~A) obtained with the Herschel Space Observatory, as well as SEST, JCMT, and APEX. The Cen A center CO ladder is quite different from those of either star-burst galaxies or AGNs. In addition, the relative intensity of the central Cen A [CI] emission lines is much greate than that in any other galaxy. The CO surface brightness of the compact circumnuclear disk (CND) is significantly higher than that of the much more extended thin disk (ETD) in the same line of sight. Our LVG and PDR/XDR models suggest that much of the CND gas is relatively cool (25 - 80 K) and not very dense (~ 300 cm^{-3}) if the heating is by UV photons, although there is some gas in both the CND and the ETD with a much higher density of ~30 000 cm^{-3}. Finally, there is also high-excitation, high-density phase in the CND (but not in the ETD), either in the form of an extreme PDR but more likely in the form of an XDR. The total gas mass of the Cen A CND is 8.4 x 10^{7} M(sun), uncertain by a factor of two. We have studied the young low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stellar population associated with the massive star-forming region DR 21 by using archival X-ray Chandra observations and by complementing them with existing optical and IR surveys. The Chandra observations have revealed for the first time a new highly extincted population of PMS low-mass stars previously missed in observations at other wavelengths. The X-ray population exhibits three main stellar density peaks, coincident with the massive star-forming regions, being the DR 21 core the main peak. The cross-correlated X-ray/IR sample exhibits a radial "Spokes-like" stellar filamentary structure that extends from the DR 21 core towards the northeast. The near IR data reveal a centrally peaked structure for the extinction, which exhibits its maximum in the DR 21 core and gradually decreases with the distance to the N-S cloud axis and to the cluster center. We find evidence of a global mass segregation in the full low-mass stellar cluster, and of an stellar age segregation, with the youngest stars still embedded in the N-S cloud, and more evolved stars more spatially distributed. The results are consistent with the scenario where an elongated overall potential well created by the full low-mass stellar cluster funnels gas through filaments feeding stellar formation. Besides the full gravitational well, smaller-scale local potential wells created by dense stellar sub-clusters of low-mass stars are privileged in the competition for the gas of the common reservoir, allowing the formation of massive stars. We also discuss the possibility that a stellar collision in the very dense stellar cluster revealed by Chandra in the DR 21 core is the origin of the large-scale and highly-energetic outflow arising from this region., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables. To distinguish between the different theories proposed to explain massive star formation, it is crucial to establish the distribution, the extinction, and the density of low-mass stars in massive star-forming regions. We analyzed deep X-ray observations of the Orion massive star-forming region using the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) catalog. We found that pre-main sequence (PMS) low-mass stars cluster toward the three massive star-forming regions: the Trapezium Cluster (TC), the Orion Hot Core (OHC), and OMC1-S. We derived low-mass stellar densities of 10^{5} stars pc^{-3} in the TC and OMC1-S, and of 10^{6} stars pc^{-3} in the OHC. The close association between the low-mass star clusters with massive star cradles supports the role of these clusters in the formation of massive stars. The X-ray observations show for the first time in the TC that low-mass stars with intermediate extinction are clustered toward the position of the most massive star, which is surrounded by a ring of non-extincted low-mass stars. Our analysis suggests that at least two basic ingredients are needed in massive star formation: the presence of dense gas and a cluster of low-mass stars. Outflows arising from very young stars affect their surroundings and influence the star formation in the parental core. Multiple molecular outflows and Herbig-Haro (HH) objects have been observed in Orion, many of them originating from the embedded massive star-forming region known as OMC1-S. The detection of the outflow driving sources is commonly difficult, because they are still hidden behind large extinction, preventing their direct observation at optical and even near and mid-IR wavelengths. With the aim of improving the identification of the driving sources of the multiple outflows detected in OMC1-S, we used the catalog provided by deep X-ray observations, which have unveiled the very embedded population of pre-main sequence stars. We compared the position of stars observed by the Chandra Orion Ultra Deep project (COUP) in OMC1-S with the morphology of the molecular outflows and the directions of measured proper motions of HH optical objects. We find that 6 out of 7 molecular outflows reported in OMC1-S (detection rate of 86 %) have an extincted X-ray COUP star located at the expected position of the driving source. In several cases, X-rays detected the possible driving sources for the first time. This clustered embedded population revealed by Chandra is very young, with an estimated average age of few 10^{5} yr. It is also likely responsible for the multiple HH objects, which are the optical correspondence of flows arising from the cloud. We show that the molecular outflows driven by the members of the OMC1-S cluster can account for the observed turbulence at core-scales and regulate the star formation efficiency. We discuss the effects of outflow feedback in the formation of massive stars, concluding that the injected turbulence in OMC1-S is compatible with a competitive accretion scenario., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 6 Tables.
