Near-infrared (NIR) luminescence thermometry has been brought to the fore as a reliable approach for remote thermal sensing and imaging. Lanthanide (Ln3+)-based nanophosphors are often proposed as NIR nanothermometers of choice. However, the combination of Ln3+ with transition metal (TM) ions has recently emerged as a strategy to introduce additional emission bands and/or TM ↔ Ln3+ energy transfer pathways whose temperature dependence can be harnessed to increase the sensitivity of the thermometric approach. Yet, the examples of the combination of luminescence nanothermometers working in the NIR and hosting simultaneously TM and Ln3+ are scarce, leaving plenty of space for the exploration of these systems. Herein, we report on the preparation and optimization of the thermometric performance of Ba3(VO4)2:Mn5+,Nd3+ nanophosphors. The different temperature dependences of the emission intensity of the two doped luminescent centers allow using the ratio between Mn5+ and Nd3+ as a reliable thermometric parameter with a relative thermal sensitivity of 1% K−1 close to room temperature. We then showcase the suitability of this nanophosphor for employment in 2D NIR luminescence thermal imaging. Lastly, we critically evaluate the possibility of using this thermal imaging approach through opaque media with the help of phantoms with tissue-like optical properties. As expected, a loss of reliability of the thermometric method is observed due to tissue-induced photon scattering and absorption that differentially affect the emission of Mn5+ and Nd3+. Overall, the reported results underscore the good performance of the newly developed nanothermometer, while consolidating the call for the use of luminescence nanothermometers working in the time-domain (rather than in the spectral domain) for deep-tissue thermal readout/imaging. In this work the origin of the phase transition induced gain depression in diode pumped Nd3+ doped Sr0.6Ba0.4(NbO3)2 lasers has been systematically investigated. The mechanisms capable of intracavity beam distortions are discussed and their relative contribution to the gain depression is investigated. Abstract: Spectroscopic characterization for optical amplification and laser application of the Er3+-doped Bi4Si3O12 glass is performed through its absorption and luminescence spectra. The spontaneous radiative transition probabilities from the first seven excited states to the ending states are calculated to obtain the luminescence branching ratios and radiative lifetimes. Intense infrared to visible luminescence of the Er3+ ion is observed with 4I9/2 state excitation (800nm) under a 200mW laser excitation power. The value obtained for the ratio of the 4I11/2 → 4F7/2 excited-state absorption oscillator strength to the 4I15/2 → 4I11/2 ground state absorption oscillator strength is in accordance with those reported for Er3+-doped materials pumped efficiently at 4I11/2 level excitation wavelengths. Gain cross-section spectra as a function of the inverted population rate and the stimulated emission cross-section spectrum were determined for the 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 infrared (IR) laser transition. The large gain bandwidth of the 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 IR emission has resulted in being close to those reported for Er3+-doped oxide glasses suitable for broadband amplifiers. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We report on continuous wave passive mode-locking laser oscillation in a wide pump power range from a Nd:Y3Al5O12 (Nd:YAG) ceramic. Q-switching instabilities were avoided by means of a proper choose of laser cavity length, neodymium concentration and modulation depth of the saturable absorber mirror. Under optimum conditions, continuous wave mode-locking was obtained for pump powers above 0.4W. For the maximum absorbed pump power of 3W average output powers close to 0.75W with a repetition rate of 52MHz were obtained. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We report on continuous wave laser oscillation of trivalent ytterbium ions in the frequency converter Yb3+:Sr0.6Ba0.4Nb2O6 ferroelectric laser crystal. Pump induced thermal loading has been used to drive the crystal from its ferroelectric to paraelectric phase. Stable laser radiation at 1070 nm was found in both phases while a bistable laser output is observed through phase transition. In addition, diffuse green (535 nm) radiation was generated by self-frequency doubling of the fundamental laser radiation because of the random distribution of microferroelectric domains existing in the ferroelectric as grown crystal. We report on the polarization and temperature dependence of optical distortions of beams passing through a Nd3+-doped Sr0.61Ba0.39Nb2O6 laser crystal. For temperatures close to TC (≈70 ºC), a strong enhancement in the optical distortion of a nonabsorbed beam takes place, related to the temperature dependence of the r33 electro-optical coefficient during phase transition. From pump and probe experiments, we have concluded that the traditional 808 nm Nd3+ pumping radiation also causes optical distortions, especially for extraordinary polarized radiation. Highly emissive Ag 2 S nanocrystals (NCs) passivated with a gradated shell incorporating Se and Zn were synthesized in air, and the temperature dependence of their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) was quantified in both organic and aqueous media at ∼1200 nm. The relevance of this parameter, measured at physiological temperatures, is highlighted for applications that rely on the near infrared (NIR) photoluminescence of NCs, such as deep NIR imaging or luminescence nanothermometry. Hyperspectral NIR imaging shows that Ag 2 S-based NCs with a PLQY in organic media of about 10% are inefficient for imaging at 40 °C through 20 mm thick tissue with low laser irradiation power densities. In contrast, water-transferred Ag 2 S-based NCs with an initial PLQY of 2% in water exhibit improved robustness against temperature changes, enabling improved imaging performance.

Today, diabetes mellitus is one of the most common diseases that affects the population on a worldwide scale. Patients suffering from this disease are required to control their blood-glucose levels several times a day through invasive methods such as piercing their fingers. Our NaGdF 4 : 5% Er 3+ , 3% Nd 3+ nanoparticles demonstrate a remarkable ability to detect D-glucose levels by analysing alterations in their red-to-green ratio, since this sensitivity arises from the interaction between the nanoparticles and the OH groups present in the D-glucose molecules, resulting in discernible changes in the emission of the green and red bands. These luminescent sensors were implemented and tested on paper substrates, offering a portable, low-cost and enzyme-free solution for D-glucose detection in aqueous solutions with a limit of detection of 22 mg/dL. Ag 2 S nanoparticles (NPs) emerge as a unique system that simultaneously features in vivo near-infrared (NIR) imaging, remote heating, and low toxicity thermal sensing. In this work, their capabilities are extended into the fields of optical coherence tomography (OCT), as contrast agents, and NIR probes in both ex vivo and in vivo experiments in eyeballs. The new dual property for ocular imaging is obtained by the preparation of Ag 2 S NPs ensembles with a biocompatible amphiphilic block copolymer. Rather than a classical ligand exchange, where surface traps may arise due to incomplete replacement of surface sites, the use of this polymer provides a protective extra layer that preserves the photoluminescence properties of the NPs, and the procedure allows for the controlled preparation of submicrometric scattering centers. In nanothermometry, the use of nanoparticles as thermal probes enables remote and minimally invasive sensing. In the biomedical context, nanothermometry has emerged as a powerful tool where traditional approaches, like infrared thermal sensing and contact thermometers, fall short. Despite the strides of this technology in preclinical settings, nanothermometry is not mature enough to be translated to the bedside. This is due to two major hurdles: the inability to perform 3D thermal imaging and the requirement for tools that are readily available in the clinics. This work simultaneously overcomes both limitations by proposing the technology of optical coherence thermometry (OCTh). This is achieved by combining thermoresponsive polymeric nanogels and optical coherence tomography (OCT)-a 3D imaging technology routinely used in clinical practice. The volume phase transition of the thermoresponsive nanogels causes marked changes in their refractive index, making them temperature-sensitive OCT contrast agents. The ability of OCTh to provide 3D thermal images is demonstrated in tissue phantoms subjected to photothermal processes, and its reliability is corroborated by comparing experimental results with numerical simulations. Functionalized upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) are promising theragnostic nanomaterials for simultaneous therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. We present two types of non-toxic eosin Y (EY) nanoconjugates derived from UCNPs as novel nanophotosensitizers (nano-PS) and deep-tissue bioimaging agents employing light at 800 nm. This excitation wavelength ensures minimum cell damage, since the absorption of water is negligible, and increases tissue penetration, enhancing the specificity of the photodynamic treatment (PDT). These UCNPs are uniquely qualified to fulfil three important roles: as nanocarriers, as energy-transfer materials, and as contrast agents. First, the UCNPs enable the transport of EY across the cell membrane of living HeLa cells that would not be possible otherwise. This cellular internalization facilitates the use of such EY-functionalized UCNPs as nano-PS and allows the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under 800 nm light inside the cell. This becomes possible due to the upconversion and energy transfer processes within the UCNPs, circumventing the excitation of EY by green light, which is incompatible with deep tissue applications. Moreover, the functionalized UCNPs present deep tissue NIR-II fluorescence under 808 nm excitation, thus demonstrating their potential as bioimaging agents in the NIR-II biological window., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

There is an urgent need for contrast agents to detect the first inflammation stage of atherosclerosis by cardiovascular optical coherence tomography (CV-OCT), the imaging technique with the highest spatial resolution and sensitivity of those used during coronary interventions. Gold nanoshells (GNSs) provide the strongest signal by CV-OCT. GNSs are functionalized with the cLABL peptide that binds specifically to the ICAM-1 molecule upregulated in the first stage of atherosclerosis. Dark field microscopy and CV-OCT are used to evaluate the specific adhesion of these functionalized GNSs to activated endothelial cells. This adhesion is investigated under static and dynamic conditions, for shear stresses comparable to those of physiological conditions. An increase in the scattering signal given by the functionalized GNSs attached to activated cells is observed compared to non-activated cells. Thus, cLABL-functionalized GNSs behave as excellent contrast agents for CV-OCT and promise a novel strategy for clinical molecular imaging of atherosclerosis., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an imaging technique currently used in clinical practice to obtain optical biopsies of different biological tissues in a minimally invasive way. Among the contrast agents proposed to increase the efficacy of this imaging method, gold nanoshells (GNSs) are the best performing ones. However, their preparation is generally time-consuming, and they are intrinsically costly to produce. Herein, we propose a more affordable alternative to these contrast agents: Bi 2 Se 3 nanostructured clusters with a desert rose-like morphology prepared via a microwave-assisted method. The structures are prepared in a matter of minutes, feature strong near-infrared extinction properties, and are biocompatible. They also boast a photon-to-heat conversion efficiency of close to 50%, making them good candidates as photothermal therapy agents. The unique combination of physical and optical properties of silica (core)/gold (shell) nanoparticles (gold nanoshells) makes them especially suitable for biomedicine. Gold nanoshells are used from high-resolution in vivo imaging to in vivo photothermal tumor treatment. Furthermore, their large scattering cross-section in the second biological window (1000-1700 nm) makes them also especially adequate for molecular optical coherence tomography (OCT). In this work, it is demonstrated that, after suitable functionalization, gold nanoshells in combination with clinical OCT systems are capable of imaging damage in the myocardium following an infarct. Since both inflammation and apoptosis are two of the main mechanisms underlying myocardial damage after ischemia, such damage imaging is achieved by endowing gold nanoshells with selective affinity for the inflammatory marker intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), and the apoptotic marker phosphatidylserine. Background and Objectives: The "Patient Blood Management" (PBM) programmes have demonstrated their value in the continuous improvement of care practice, due to continuous systematic reviewing of results and their dynamic and multidisciplinary updating in accordance with new clinical evidence. Our goal is to demonstrate the effectiveness of simple protocols, applicable in second level hospitals., Patients and Methods: 702 patients undergoing scheduled arthroplasty from 2011 to 2018 were retrospectively analysed. During this period, the evolution of transfusion rates and anaemia and bleeding management were recorded in the patients' computerised clinical histories., Results: Stages and transfusion rates were: Year 2011-2012, "Universal self-donation programme": 62.4%; year 2013, "Optimization of preoperative haemoglobin and universal self-donation withdrawal", 22.5%; year 2015, "Stopping the use of cell-savers and drains", 13.2%; and year 2017, "Introduction of routine tranexamic acid", 3.6%. A significant reduction in the transfusion rate and volume (P<.001) and the average hospital stay (8 to 6 days) (P<.001) was achieved. In multivariate models, transfused patients have a .5-day stay and there is a trend towards a reduction in complications, being fewer in patients receiving tranexamic acid (OR .44)., Conclusion: A simple progressive and multidisciplinary PBM programme, with continued re-evaluation, has allowed a reduction in transfusion rates and average hospital stay., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier España, S.L.U. Research on near-infrared (NIR) bioimaging has progressed very quickly in the past few years, as fluorescence imaging is reaching a credible implementation as a preclinical technique. The applications of NIR bioimaging in theranostics have contributed to its increasing impact. This has brought about the development of novel technologies and, simultaneously, of new contrast agents capable of acting as efficient NIR optical probes. Among these probes, Ag 2 S nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted increasing attention due to their temperature-sensitive NIR-II emission, which can be exploited for deep-tissue imaging and thermometry, and their heat delivery capabilities. This multifunctionality makes Ag 2 S NPs ideal candidates for theranostics. This review presents a critical analysis of the synthesis routes, properties and optical features of Ag 2 S NPs. We also discuss the latest and most remarkable achievements enabled by these NPs in preclinical imaging and theranostics, together with a critical assessment of their potential to face forthcoming challenges in biomedicine.
