This article analyzes the pragmatic behavior and sociolinguistic stratification of filled pauses in a sample of 72 sociolinguistic interviews conducted with speakers from Santiago, Chile. The study approaches the sub-values of these particles, in relation to its preferential position, as well as the correlation of its use with sociodemographic factors: sex-gender, age and socioeconomic group of the speakers. The results show that the filled pause puta is more frequently used by younger speakers, while eh it is less used by women of the middle socioeconomic group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within a sociolinguistic framework, in this paper, we describe the use of dequeísmo (use of 'de que' instead of 'que') in the utterances of Spanish speakers living in Santiago de Chile. A stratified sample of 120 interviews with people residing in Santiago was utilized for the analysis. The study intended to 1) identify the internal variables that prompted the use of dequeísmo and 2) correlate those variables with sociodemographic of the speakers (gender age and socioeconomic status). The results suggest that the contexts that foster the use of dequeísmo frequently allowed for the replacement of other de prepositions and appositive structures, although most cases occurred in clauses with functions of direct object and subject. Additionally, in the sample, the use of dequeísmo was frequently coincided in the speeches of male and older speakers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to complete the sociolinguistic analysis of the use of reformulators of detachment in the Spanish spoken in Santiago, Chile, that we report in San Martín (2004-2005 and 2013). To this end, the amount of material analyzed was expanded and inferential statistical tests were applied. Thus, the behavior of these discourse markers in a stratified sample of 120 interviews of Santiago's informants is described, and we establish their socio-linguistic distribution, calculating the significancy of the contrast of their mean and their mean rank. Also, the theoretical conceptualization of discourse markers of Cortés (1998), Martin Zorraquino & Portolés (1999), Portolés (2001) and Carbonero & Santana (2010) was developed. The markers that fulfilled the role of "reformulation of detachment" in the corpus were: igual, en todo caso and de todas maneras, whose employment frequencies were correlated with the factors: sex, age and socioeconomic group of informants, based on their functional commutability at the discursive level. The results show that igual is the most frequent reformulator of detachment and that it is more used by young speakers of the community under study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this article is to analyze the use of the discourse markers of reformulation in Spanish spoken in Santiago, Chile, from a sociolinguistic point of view. Specifically, the behavior of discourse markers that meet this function is described and at the same time the sociolinguistics distribution of this use is established, in a stratified sample of 120 interviews. Also, the concept and the classification of discourse markers by Martín Zorraquino & Portolés (1999) and Portolés (2001), and the suggestions of Cortés (1998) and Carbonero & Santana (2010) for the quantitative study of social variation of markers is applied. In the analysis, sex, age and socioeconomic group of subjects interviewed were correlated with the use of reformulators, based on their functional commutability in discursive level, according to different subtypes of reformulation (explanation, recapitulation, detachment and correction). The results of the study show that markers o sea, igual y al final, and the explanatory reformulators are the most frequent. Finally, age and socioeconomic group of the participants are the most relevant variables in utilization of these markers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies about "discourse markers" have coincided in stressing their importance to the production and comprehension of discourse, both oral and written, in different languages. Despite their importance, one of the less investigated dimensions in the Spanish language is the social and dialectal variation in the use of the aforementioned particles. Thus, the majority of the approaches to the discursive functions of the markers have a tendency to be based on peninsular Spanish and on reconstructed examples or on written language. In this study, the pragmatic functioning and sociolinguistic stratification of two markers used in the Spanish spoken in Santiago, Chile are analyzed: por ser and onda. The objectives of this article are to identify the functions said discourse markers fulfill and to correlate their use frequency with the sex, age, and level of education sociodemographic variables. For this purpose, the behavior of these particles in the interviews that make up the sociolinguistic corpus of the PRESEEA of Santiago will be analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
