In this work, we study the function $f_2(G)$ that counts the number of exact factorizations of a finite group $G$. We compute $f_2(G)$ for some well-known families of finite groups and use the results of Wiegold and Williamson \cite{WW} to derive an asymptotic expression for the number of exact factorizations of the alternating group $A_{2^n}$. Finally, we propose several questions about the function $f_2(G)$ that may be of interest for further research., Comment: 19 pages

In this paper we explore the capabilities of MoS2 and WS2 2D monolayers to produce radiation in the terahertz range by generation of high-order harmonics. This phenomenon, which is a result of the non-linear response of the electronic carrier population to the applied electric field, is studied by using a particle ensemble stochastic simulation approach based on the Monte Carlo method. The power of the produced harmonic signals is studied against the electric field amplitude, the external temperature, and the frequency of the excitation. Additionally, the stochastic nature of the simulation tool enables to discern the purely discrete harmonic signal from the background spectral noise that comes from the intrinsic carrier velocity fluctuations in the diffusive regime, permitting to set bandwidth thresholds for harmonic extraction. It was found that both TMDs showed similar thresholds bandwidths when compared to III-V semiconductor at low temperatures, while WS2 would be by far a better choice, over MoS2, for exploitation of the 7th and 9th harmonic generation., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. The effect of degeneracy and the impact of free-carrier screening on a low-field mobility and a high-field drift velocity in MoS2 and WS2 are explored using an in-house ensemble Monte Carlo simulator. Electron low field mobility increases to 8400 cm2/Vs for MoS2 and to 12040 cm2/Vs for WS2 when temperature decreases to 77 K and carrier concentration is around 5e12 cm-2. In the case of holes, best mobility values were 9320 cm2/Vs and 13290 cm2 per Vs, reached at 77 K, while at room temperature these fall to 80 cm2/Vs and 150 cm2/Vs for MoS2 and WS2, respectively. The carrier screening effect plays a major role at low fields, and low and intermediate temperatures, where a combination of large occupancy of primary valleys and carrier-phonon interactions dominated by relatively low energy exchange processes results in an enhanced screening of intrinsic scattering. For electrons, degeneracy yields to transport in secondary valleys, which plays an important role in the decrease of the low field mobility at high concentrations and/or at room temperature. The high-field drift velocity is not much affected by carrier screening because of an increased carrier scattering with surface optical polar phonons, favouring larger phonon wavevector interactions with small dielectric function values., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. In this work, we explore the potential of spin-based integrated devices using polariton waveguides that form codirectional couplers. For suitable coupler parameters, a transfer of condensates between the arms of the coupler, occurs leading to the observation of Josephson-like oscillations. The ability to tune the periodicity of these oscillations opens the way to the design of polaritonic circuits in which the directionality of the signal towards the output terminals can be controlled. We also investigate the response of the devices to linearly polarized excitation, delving into the dynamics of linear polarization at the output terminals of long couplers, providing valuable insights into the potential applications of spin-based polariton devices, including polariton switches and logic gates with efficient operation. Our results are supported by numerical simulations based on generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing the dynamics of coherent polaritons in spatially non-uniform system. We show, how the coupling and the controllable spin degree of freedom in polariton couplers opens avenues for innovative optical architectures and functionalities., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

Novae are luminous explosions in close binaries which host a white dwarf and a companion donor star. They are triggered by a thermonuclear runaway when the white dwarf accretes a critical amount of matter from the secondary. Though novae are established as high-energy gamma-ray emitters through observations by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), the origin of the gamma-ray emission, whether it is hadronic or leptonic, had been under intense debate until very recently. RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph) is a well-known recurrent symbiotic nova with a recurrence time scale of 15 years. The most recent outburst of RS Oph in 2021 brought the first detection of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays from a nova ever. The first Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array observed this historic event along with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC. The LST-1 observations in the first days after the burst onset show a clear VHE gamma-ray signal from RS Oph. The low energy threshold of LST-1 allows us to reconstruct the RS Oph gamma-ray spectrum down to $\sim$30 GeV, providing the best connection of the VHE gamma-ray data to the Fermi LAT energy range. The results from the analysis of the LST-1 observations are consistent with those obtained with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC, and also support a hadronic origin for the observed gamma-ray fluxes. Anisotropic hybrid nanostructures stand out as promising therapeutic agents in photothermal conversion-based treatments. Accordingly, understanding local heat generation mediated by light-to-heat conversion of absorbing multicomponent nanoparticles at the single particle level have both forthwith become a subject of broad and current interest. Nonetheless, evaluating reliable temperature profiles around a single trapped nanoparticle is challenging from all experimental, computational, and fundamental viewpoints. Committed to filling this gap, the heat generation of an anisotropic hybrid nanostructure is explored by means of two different experimental approaches from which the local temperature is measured in a direct or indirect way, all in the context of the hot Brownian motion theory. The results were compared with analytical results supported by the numerical computation of the wavelength-dependent absorption efficiencies in the discrete dipole approximation for scattering calculations, which has been here extended to inhomogeneous nanostructures. Overall, we provide a consistent and comprehensive view of the heat generation in optical traps of highly absorbing particles under the viewpoint of the hot Brownian motion theory.

Enhanced weathering (EW) is a promising modification to current agricultural practices that uses crushed silicate rocks to drive carbon dioxide removal (CDR). If widely adopted on farmlands, it could help achieve net-zero or negative emissions by 2050. We report detailed state-level analysis indicating EW deployed on agricultural land could sequester 0.23-0.38 Gt CO$_2$ yr$^{-1}$ and meet 36-60 % of U.S. technological CDR goals. Average CDR costs vary between state, being highest in the first decades before declining to a range of $\sim\$$100-150 tCO$_2{}^{-1}$ by 2050, including for three states (Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana) that contribute most to total national CDR. We identify multiple electoral swing states as being essential for scaling EW that are also key beneficiaries of the practice, indicating the need for strong bipartisan support of this technology. Assessment the geochemical capacity of rivers and oceans to carry dissolved EW products from soil drainage suggests EW provides secure long-term CO$_2$ removal on intergenerational time scales. We additionally forecast mitigation of ground-level ozone increases expected with future climate change, as an indirect benefit of EW, and consequent avoidance of yield reductions. Our assessment supports EW as a practical innovation for leveraging agriculture to enable positive action on climate change with adherence to federal environmental justice priorities. However, implementing a stage-gating framework as upscaling proceeds to safeguard against environmental and biodiversity concerns will be essential.

Enhanced weathering (EW) with crushed basalt on farmlands is a promising scalable atmospheric carbon dioxide removal strategy that urgently requires performance assessment with commercial farming practices. Our large-scale replicated EW field trial in the heart of the U.S. Corn Belt shows cumulative time-integrated carbon sequestration of 15.4 +/- 4.1 t CO2 ha-1 over four years, with additional emissions mitigation of ~0.1 - 0.4 t CO2,e ha-1 yr-1 for soil nitrous oxide, a potent long-lived greenhouse gas. Maize and soybean yields increased 12-16% with EW following improved soil fertility, decreased soil acidification, and upregulation of root nutrient transport genes. Our findings suggest that widespread adoption of EW across farming sectors has the potential to contribute significantly to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions goals and global food and soil security.

When developing tools for automated cortical segmentation, the ability to produce topologically correct segmentations is important in order to compute geometrically valid morphometry measures. In practice, accurate cortical segmentation is challenged by image artifacts and the highly convoluted anatomy of the cortex itself. To address this, we propose a novel deep learning-based cortical segmentation method in which prior knowledge about the geometry of the cortex is incorporated into the network during the training process. We design a loss function which uses the theory of Laplace's equation applied to the cortex to locally penalize unresolved boundaries between tightly folded sulci. Using an ex vivo MRI dataset of human medial temporal lobe specimens, we demonstrate that our approach outperforms baseline segmentation networks, both quantitatively and qualitatively., Comment: Accepted at the 28th biennial international conference on Information Processing in Medical Imaging (IPMI 2023)

Microgels are soft microparticles that often exhibit thermoresponsiveness and feature a transformation at a critical temperature, referred to as the volume phase transition temperature. The question of whether this transformation occurs as a smooth or as a discontinuous one is still a matter of debate. This question can be addressed by studying individual microgels trapped in optical tweezers. For this aim, composite particles were obtained by decorating pNIPAM microgels with iron oxide nanocubes. These composites become self-heating when illuminated by the infrared trapping laser, featuring Hot Brownian Motion within the trap. Above a certain laser power, a single decorated microgel features a volume phase transition that is discontinuous, while the usual continuous sigmoidal-like dependence is recovered after averaging over different microgels. The collective sigmoidal behavior enables the application of a power-to-temperature calibration and provides the effective drag coefficient of the self-heating microgels, thus establishing these composite particles as potential micro-thermometers and micro-heaters. Moreover, the self-heating microgels also exhibit an unexpected and intriguing bistability behavior above the critical temperature, probably due to partial collapses of the microgel. These results set the stage for further studies and the development of applications based on the Hot Brownian Motion of soft particles.

We compute semiclassical corrections to the energy density of kinks in $\phi^4$ theory and of solitons in the sine-Gordon model in $1+1$ dimensions, using local and covariant renormalization techniques from quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. Epistasis can be defined as the statistical interaction of genes during the expression of a phenotype. It is believed that it plays a fundamental role in gene expression, as individual genetic variants have reported a very small increase in disease risk in previous Genome-Wide Association Studies. The most successful approach to epistasis detection is the exhaustive method, although its exponential time complexity requires a highly parallel implementation in order to be used. This work presents Fiuncho, a program that exploits all levels of parallelism present in \textit{x86\_64} CPU clusters in order to mitigate the complexity of this approach. It supports epistasis interactions of any order, and when compared with other exhaustive methods, it is on average 358, 7 and 3 times faster than MDR, MPI3SNP and BitEpi, respectively., Comment: Submitted to The Journal of Supercomputing. We review the relation between the classical formulas of the pre-Schwarzian and Schwarzian derivatives of locally univalent analytic functions and the derivatives of the generating functions of the methods due to Newton and Halley, respectively, for approximating zeros. We extend these relations to the cases when the functions considered are harmonic.

Epistasis is a phenomenon in which a phenotype outcome is determined by the interaction of genetic variation at two or more loci and it cannot be attributed to the additive combination of effects corresponding to the individual loci. Although it has been more than 100 years since William Bateson introduced this concept, it still is a topic under active research. Locating epistatic interactions is a computationally expensive challenge that involves analyzing an exponentially growing number of combinations. Authors in this field have resorted to a multitude of hardware architectures in order to speed up the search, but little to no attention has been paid to the vector instructions that current CPUs include in their instruction sets. This work extends an existing third-order exhaustive algorithm to support the search of epistasis interactions of any order and discusses multiple SIMD implementations of the different functions that compose the search using Intel AVX Intrinsics. Results using the GCC and the Intel compiler show that the 512-bit explicit vector implementation proposed here performs the best out of all of the other implementations evaluated. The proposed 512-bit vectorization accelerates the original implementation of the algorithm by an average factor of 7 and 12, for GCC and the Intel Compiler, respectively, in the scenarios tested., Comment: Submitted to Future Generation Computer Systems. We study the impact of the top quark mass renormalized in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme on the $\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}\text{H}$ production cross-sections as an alternative to theory predictions with the conventionally used pole mass scheme. The differential cross-sections at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD with stable top quarks show a moderate decrease in scale uncertainties for the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ mass renormalization scheme compared to the on-shell one. The shape of the differential distributions is not affected much, the largest differences being observed in the invariant mass distributions of the $\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}$ and the $\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}\text{H}$ systems., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

FVV Live is a novel end-to-end free-viewpoint video system, designed for low cost and real-time operation, based on off-the-shelf components. The system has been designed to yield high-quality free-viewpoint video using consumer-grade cameras and hardware, which enables low deployment costs and easy installation for immersive event-broadcasting or videoconferencing. The paper describes the architecture of the system, including acquisition and encoding of multiview plus depth data in several capture servers and virtual view synthesis on an edge server. All the blocks of the system have been designed to overcome the limitations imposed by hardware and network, which impact directly on the accuracy of depth data and thus on the quality of virtual view synthesis. The design of FVV Live allows for an arbitrary number of cameras and capture servers, and the results presented in this paper correspond to an implementation with nine stereo-based depth cameras. FVV Live presents low motion-to-photon and end-to-end delays, which enables seamless free-viewpoint navigation and bilateral immersive communications. Moreover, the visual quality of FVV Live has been assessed through subjective assessment with satisfactory results, and additional comparative tests show that it is preferred over state-of-the-art DIBR alternatives.
