Flavor deconstruction refers to ultraviolet completions of the Standard Model where the gauge group is split into multiple factors under which fermions transform non-universally. We propose a mechanism for charging same-family fermions into different factors of a deconstructed gauge theory in a way that gauge anomalies are avoided. The mechanism relies in the inclusion of a strongly-coupled sector, responsible of both anomaly cancellation and the breaking of the non-universal gauge symmetry. As an application, we propose different flavor deconstructions of the Standard Model that, instead of complete families, uniquely identify specific third-family fermions. All these deconstructions allow for a new physics scale that can be as low as few TeV and provide an excellent starting point for the explanation of the Standard Model flavor hierarchies., Comment: 24 pages, 5 tables, version accepted for publication in JHEP

We present a field redefinition that simplifies the Higgs Effective Field Theory Lagrangian for the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Sector. We present a systematic method for determining the two-loop effective Lagrangian resulting from integrating out a set of heavy particles in an ultraviolet scalar theory. We prove that the matching coefficients are entirely determined from the (double-)hard region of the loop integrals and present a master formula for matching, applicable to both diagrammatic and functional approaches. We further employ functional methods to determine compact expressions for the effective Lagrangian that do not rely on any previous knowledge of its structure or symmetries. The same methods are also applicable to the computation of renormalization group equations. In this article we study the phenomenological implications of multiple Higgs boson production from longitudinal vector boson scattering in the context of effective field theories. We find compact representations for effective tree-level amplitudes with up to four final state Higgs bosons. Total cross sections are then computed for scenarios relevant at the LHC in which we find the general Higgs Effective Theory (HEFT) prediction avoids the heavy suppression observed in Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT)., Comment: 44 pages, 10 figures

We study the operad of derived $A_\infty$-algebras from a new point of view in order to find a derived version of the Deligne conjecture. We start by defining the brace structure on an operad of graded $R$-modules using operadic suspension, which we describe in depth for the first time as a functor, and use it to define $A_\infty$-algebra structures on certain operads, with the endomorphism operad as our main example. This construction provides us with an operadic context from which $A_\infty$-algebras arise in a natural way and allows us to generalize the Lie algebra structure on the Hochschild complex of an $A_\infty$-algebra. Next, we generalize these constructions to operads of bigraded $R$-modules, introducing a totalization functor. This allows us to generalize a Lie algebra structure on the total complex of a derived $A_\infty$-algebra. In the presence of an axion or axion-like particle (ALP) that couples to the Standard Model via dimension-five interactions, dimension-six SMEFT interactions are generated via renormalization-group evolution. As many of these SMEFT contributions are experimentally tightly constrained, this "ALP-SMEFT interference" can be used to derive indirect bounds on the ALP couplings to the Standard Model particles. We present a global analysis of the Wilson coefficients of the ALP effective Lagrangian based on Higgs, top, and low-energy data. Materials based on spin crossover (SCO) molecules have centred the attention in Molecular Magnetism for more than forty years as they provide unique examples of multifunctional and stimuli-responsive materials, which can be then integrated into electronic devices to exploit their molecular bistability. This process often requires the preparation of thermally stable SCO molecules that can sublime and remain intact in contact with surfaces. However, the number of robust sublimable SCO molecules is still very scarce. Here we report a novel example of this kind. It is based on a neutral iron (II) coordination complex formulated as [FeII(neoim)2], where neoimH is the ionogenic ligand 2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)-9-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline. In the first part a comprehensive study, which covers the synthesis and magneto-structural characterization of the [FeII(neoim)2] complex as a bulk microcrystalline material, is reported. Then, in the second part we investigate the suitability of this material to form thin films through high vacuum (HV) sublimation. Finally, the retainment of all present SCO capabilities in the bulk when the material is processed is thoroughly studied by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Modulation of magnetic properties through voltage-driven ion motion and redox processes, i.e., magneto-ionics, is a unique approach to control magnetism with electric field for low-power memory and spintronic applications. So far, magneto-ionics has been achieved through direct electrical connections to the actuated material. Here we evidence that an alternative way to reach such control exists in a wireless manner. Induced polarization in the conducting material immersed in the electrolyte, without direct wire contact, promotes wireless bipolar electrochemistry, an alternative pathway to achieve voltage-driven control of magnetism based on the same electrochemical processes involved in direct-contact magneto-ionics. A significant tunability of magnetization is accomplished for cobalt nitride thin films, including transitions between paramagnetic and ferromagnetic states. Such effects can be either volatile or non-volatile depending on the electrochemical cell configuration. Studying the impact of new-physics models on low-energy observables necessitates matching to effective field theories at the relevant mass thresholds. We introduce the first public version of Matchete, a computer tool for matching weakly-coupled models at one-loop order. It uses functional methods to directly compute all matching contributions in a manifestly gauge-covariant manner, while simplification methods eliminate redundant operators from the output. We sketch the workings of the program and provide examples of how to match simple Standard Model extensions. This note gives an overview of the tools for the precision matching of ultraviolet theories to the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) at the tree level and one loop. Several semi- and fully automated codes are presented, as well as some supplementary codes for the basis conversion and the subsequent running and matching at low energies. Among the different types of switchable molecular compounds, sublimable Fe(II) SCO molecules provide a suitable platform to develop smart devices that respond to external stimuli. Here we report the synthesis, crystallographic structure and magnetic properties of three new neutral Fe(II) SCO molecules belonging to the {Fe[H2B(pz)2]2(L)} family with bidentate-alpha-diimine ligands L = 3-(pyridin-2-yl)-[1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine (tzpy), 5,5,6,6-tetrahydro-4H,4H-2,2-bi(1,3-thiazine) (btz) and 4,4,5,5-tetrahydro-2,2-bithiazole (bt) (1, 2 and 3, respectively), as well as two solvated forms of 1 and 3. All three desolvated compounds present thermal- and light-induced SCO transitions with different degrees of cooperativity and effectiveness. Furthermore, 1 and 2 are demonstrated to be sublimable under HV conditions affording homogeneous thin films 200 nm thick (TF1 and TF2) that retain the chemical integrity of the original molecules regardless the deposition surface. The SCO behaviour of the films is characterized by XAS technique revealing the partial retainment of both thermal- and light-induced spin transitions, yet losing the cooperativity. Finally, SCO/2D horizontal hybrid devices based on CVD-graphene are produced using these films. Being the first ones of this type utilizing molecules of {Fe[H2B(pz)2]2(L)} family, with L = tzpy and btz, the devices have allowed the successful detection of the thermal SCO transition through the electric properties of the CVD-graphene., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures

Effective Field Theory calculations used in countless phenomenological analyses employ dimensional regularization, and at intermediate stages of computations, the operator bases extend beyond the four-dimensional ones. The extra pieces -- the evanescent operators -- can ultimately be removed with a suitable renormalization scheme, resulting in a finite shift of the physical operators. Modern Effective Field Theory matching techniques relying on the method of expansion by regions have to be extended to account for this. The deposition of a monolayer by direct self-assembly from solution of an active spin-crossover (SCO) complex via chemisorption has been achieved starting from the perchlorate salt of Co(II) bis(4-(4-carboxyphenyl)-2,2:6,2-terpyridine). MALDI-TOF MS, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirm the presence of an intact monolayer of SCO molecules grafted through carboxylate groups to the Ag surface. Three different spectroscopic techniques (Raman, XPS and X-ray Absorption spectroscopy, XAS) evidence a thermal spin transition of such monolayer of molecules. Hybrid devices based on spin-crossover (SCO)/2D heterostructures grant a highly sensitive platform to detect the spin transition in the molecular SCO component and tune the properties of the 2D material. However, the fragility of the SCO materials upon thermal treatment, light irradiation or contact with surfaces and the methodologies used for their processing have limited their applicability. Here, we report an easily processable and robust SCO/2D hybrid device with outstanding performance based on the sublimable SCO [Fe(Pyrz)2] molecule deposited over CVD-graphene, which is fully compatible with electronics industry protocols. Thus, a novel methodology based on growing an elusive polymorph of [Fe(Pyrz)2] (tetragonal phase) over graphene is developed that allows us to electrically detect a fast and effective light-induced spin transition in the devices (~50% yield in 5 minutes). Such performance can be enhanced even more when a flexible polymeric layer of PMMA is inserted in between the two active components in a contactless configuration, reaching a ~100 % yield in 5 minutes., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures

The recent B-meson anomalies are coherently explained at the TeV scale by 4321 gauge models with hierarchical couplings reminiscent of the Standard Model Yukawas. We show that such models arise as the low-energy limit of a complete theory of flavor, based on a warped fifth dimension where each Standard Model family is quasi-localized in a different brane. The Higgs is identified as a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson emerging from the same dynamics responsible for 4321 symmetry breaking. This novel construction unifies quarks and leptons in a flavor non-universal manner, provides a natural description of flavor hierarchies, and addresses the electroweak hierarchy problem., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure

The layered perovskite YBaCuFeO5 (YBCFO) is able to adopt chiral magnetic order up to unexpectedly high temperatures, paving the way to strong magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature. In this perovskite A-site cations are fully ordered whereas the occupancy of the B-sites strongly depend on the preparation process. Though the structure is not geometrically frustrated, the presence of partial Fe3+/Cu2+ disorder at the B-sites produces magnetic frustration. In an effort to increase the spin-orbit coupling in the system, we have synthesized and studied YBaCuFe0.95Mn0.05O5 in single crystal form, where the highly symmetric Fe3+ ions (3d5) are partially substituted with Jahn-Teller active 3d4 Mn3+ ions. We report the structural and magnetic properties of a highly ordered single crystal of this layered perovskite, which are presented in comparison with a polycrystalline specimen (three times more disordered). Single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements reveal two collinear magnetic phases and the lack of incommensurate spiral order. The magnetic phases and transitions found in the crystal grown by the traveling solvent floating zone (TSFZ) method are fully described and analyzed in the light of its high level of Fe/Cu cationic order (~90%).

Zeolites are so well known in real world applications and after decades of scientific study that they hardly need any intro-duction: their importance in chemistry cannot be overemphasized. Here we add to the remarkable properties that they dis-play by reporting our discovery that the simplest zeolite, sodalite, when doped with Cr3+ in the \b{eta}-cage, is a frustrated magnet. Soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic measurements reveal that the Cr present is Cr(III). Cr(III), with its isotropic 3d3 valence electron configuration, is well-known as the basis for many geometrically frustrated magnets, but it is especially surprising that a material like the Ca8Al12Cr2O29 zeolite is a frustrated magnet. This finding illustrates the value of exploring the properties of even well-known materials families.

As a consequence of the large (and growing) number of near-Earth objects discovered, some of them are lost before their orbit can be firmly established to ensure long-term recovery. A fraction of these present non-negligible chances of impact with the Earth. We present a method of targeted observations that allowed us to eliminate that risk by obtaining deep images of the area where the object would be, should it be on a collision orbit. 2006 QV89 was one of these objects, with a chance of impact with the Earth on 2019 September 9. Its position uncertainty (of the order of 1 degree) and faintness (below V$\sim$24) made it a difficult candidate for a traditional direct recovery. However, the position of the virtual impactors could be determined with excellent accuracy. In July 2019, the virtual impactors of 2006 QV89 were particularly well placed, with a very small uncertainty region, and an expected magnitude of V$<$26. The area was imaged using ESO's Very Large Telescope, in the context of the ESA/ESO collaboration on Near-Earth Objects, resulting in very constraining a non-detection. This resulted in the elimination of the virtual impactor, even without effectively recovering 2006 QV89, indicating that it did not represent a threat. This method of deep non-detection of virtual impactors demonstrated a large potential to eliminate the threat of other-wise difficult to recover near-Earth objects, Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics
