Context. Euclid will carry out a deep survey benefiting the discovery and characterisation of ultracool dwarfs (UCDs), especially in the Euclid Deep Fields (EDFs), which the telescope will scan repeatedly throughout its mission. The photometric and spectroscopic standards in the EDFs are important benchmarks, crucial for the classification and characterisation of new UCD discoveries and for the calibration of the mission itself. Aims. We aim to provide a list of photometric UCD candidates and collect near-infrared reconnaissance spectra for M, L, and T-type UCDs in the EDFs as future Euclid UCD references. Methods. In EDF North, we cross-matched public optical and infrared surveys with certain photometric criteria to select UCDs. In EDF Fornax and EDF South, we used photometrically classified samples from the literature. We also include UCDs identified by Gaia DR2. We selected 7 UCD targets with different spectral types from the lists and obtained low-resolution 0.9-2.5 {\mu}m spectra of them using GTC/EMIR and the VLT/X-shooter. We also selected a young, bright L dwarf near EDF Fornax to test the coherence of these two facilities. We included an extra T dwarf in EDF North with its published J-band spectrum. Results. We retrieved a list of 81 (49, 231) M, 8 (29, 115) L, and 1 (0, 2) T dwarf candidates in EDF North, Fornax, and South, respectively. They are provided to guide future UCD discoveries and characterisations by Euclid. In total, we collected near-infrared spectra for 9 UCDs, including 2 M types, 3 L types, and 4 T types in or close to the 3 EDFs. The Euclidised spectra show consistency in their spectral classification, which demonstrates that slitless Euclid spectroscopy will recover the spectral types with high fidelity for UCDs, both in the EDFs and in the wide survey. Observations of five Y dwarfs with three optical and near-infrared instruments at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias are reported. Deep images of the five targets and a low-resolution far-red optical spectrum for one of the targets were obtained. One of the Y dwarfs, WISE J173835+273258 (Y0), was clearly detected in the optical (z- and i-bands) and another, WISE J182831+265037 (Y2), was detected only in the z-band. We measured the colours of our targets and found that the z-J and i-z colours of the Y dwarfs are bluer than those of mid- and late-T dwarfs. This optical blueing has been predicted by models, but our data indicates that it is sharper and happens at temperatures about 150 K warmer than expected. Likely, the culprit is the K I resonance doublet, which weakens more abruptly in the T- to Y-type transition than expected. We show that the alkali resonance lines (Cs I and K I) are weaker in Y dwarfs than in T dwarfs; the far-red optical spectrum of WISE J173835+273258 is similar to that of late-T dwarfs, but with stronger methane and water features; and we noted the appearance of new absorption features that we propose could be due to hydrogen sulphide. The optical properties of Y dwarfs presented here pose new challenges to understanding grain sedimentation in extremely cool objects. The weakening of the very broad K I resonance doublet due to condensation in dust grains is more abrupt than theoretically anticipated. Consequently, the observed blueing of the z-J and i-z colours of Y dwarfs with respect to T dwarfs is more pronounced than predicted by models and could boost the potential of upcoming deep large-area optical surveys regarding their ability to detect extremely cool objects, Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The ESA space mission Euclid was launched on July 1st, 2023 and is undergoing its science verification phase. In this invited review we show that Euclid means a before and an after for our understanding of ultra-cool dwarfs and substellar-mass objects and their connections with stars, exoplanets and the Milky Way. Euclid enables the study with unprecedented statistical significance a very large ensemble of ultracool dwarfs, the identification of new types of substellar objects, and the determination of the substellar binary fraction and the Initial Mass Function (IMF) in diverse galactic environments from the nearest stellar nurseries to the ancient relics of Galactic formation., Comment: 8 pages

The use of rare-earth-based permanent magnets is one of the critical points for the development of the current technology. On the one hand, industry of the rare-earths is highly polluting due to the negative environmental impact of their extraction and, on the other hand, the sector is potentially dependent on China. Therefore, investigation is required both in the development of rare-earth-free permanent magnets and in sintering processes that enable their greener fabrication with attractive magnetic properties at a more competitive price. This work presents the use of a cold sintering process (CSP) followed by a post-annealing at 1100 {\deg}C as a new way to sinter composite permanent magnets based on strontium ferrite (SFO). Composites that incorporate a percentage < 10% of an additional magnetic phase have been prepared and the morphological, structural and magnetic properties have been evaluated after each stage of the process. CSP induces a phase transformation of SFO in the composites, which is partially recovered by the post-thermal treatment improving the relative density to 92% and the magnetic response of the final magnets with a coercivity of up to 3.0 kOe. Control of the magnetic properties is possible through the composition and the grain size in the sintered magnets. These attractive results show the potential of the sintering approach as an alternative to develop modern rare-earth-free composite permanent magnets.

In this work we have investigated the effect of the solvent during the processing of SrFe12O19 platelet-based permanent magnets by cold sintering process (CSP) plus a post-thermal treatment. Several organic solvents: glacial acetic acid, oleic acid and oleylamine have been analyzed, optimizing the CSP temperatures at 190-270 {\deg}C, under pressures of 375-670 MPa and 6-50 wt% of solvent. Modifications in the morphological and structural properties are identified depending on the solvent, which impacts on the magnetic response. Independently of the solvent, the mechanical integrity of ferrite magnets obtained by CSP is improved by a post-annealing at 1100 {\deg}C for 2 h, resulting in relative densities around 92 % with an average grain size of 1 {\mu}m and a fraction of SrFe12O19 phase > 91 %. Hc > 2.1 kOe and MS of 73 emu/g are obtained in the final sintered ceramic magnets, exhibiting the highest HC value of 2.8 kOe for the magnet sintered using glacial acetic acid.

The incessant technological pursuit towards a more sustainable and green future depends strongly on permanent magnets. At present, their use is widespread, making it imperative to develop new processing methods that generate highly competitive magnetic properties reducing the fabrication temperatures and costs. Herein, a novel strategy for developing dense sintered magnets based on Sr-hexaferrites with upper functional characteristics is presented. An innovative cold sintering approach using glacial acetic acid as novelty, followed by a post-annealing at 1100 {\deg}C, achieves a densification of the ceramic magnets of 92% with respect to the theoretical density and allows controlling the particle growth. After the cold sintering process, a fraction of amorphous SrO is identified, in addition to a partial transformation to {\alpha}-Fe2O3 as secondary crystalline phase. 46 wt% of SrFe12O19 remains, which is mostly recuperated after the post-thermal treatment. These findings do not significantly modify the final structure of ferrite magnets, neither at short- nor long-range order. The innovative process has a positive impact on the magnetic properties, yielding competitive ferrite magnets at lower sintering temperatures with an energy efficiency of at least 25%, which opens up a new horizon in the field of rare-earth free permanent magnets and new possibilities in other applications.

Context. Metal-poor brown dwarfs are poorly understood because they are extremely faint and rare. Only a few candidates have been identified as T-type subdwarfs in infrared surveys and their optical properties remain unconstrained. Aims. We aim to improve the knowledge of the optical properties of T subdwarf candidates to break the degeneracy between metallicity and temperature and to investigate their atmospheric properties. Methods. Deep $z$-band images of 10 known T subdwarf candidates were collected with the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias. Low-resolution optical spectra for two of them were obtained with the same telescope. Photometric measurements of the $z$-band flux were performed for all the targets and they were combined with infrared photometry in $J, H, K, W1$ and $W2$-bands from the literature to obtain the colours. The spectra were compared with solar-metallicity T dwarf templates and with laboratory spectra. Results. We found that the targets segregate into three distinct groups in the $W1 - W2$ vs. $z - W1$ colour-colour diagram. Group I objects are mixed with solar-metallicity T dwarfs. Group III objects have $W1 - W2$ colours similar to T dwarfs but very red $z - W1$ colours. Group II objects lie between Group I and III. The two targets for which we obtained spectra are located in Group I and their spectroscopic properties resemble normal T dwarfs but with water features that are deeper and have a shape akin to pure water. Conclusions. We conclude that the $W1 - W2$ vs. $z - W1$ colour-colour diagram is excellent to break the metallicity-temperature degeneracy for objects cooler than L-type. A revision of the spectral classification of T subdwarf might be needed in the future, according to the photometric and spectroscopic properties of WISE1810 and WISE0414 in Group III discussed in this work., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A on 18th Aug 2023

We have devised a predominantly Naive Bayes method to classify the optical/IR matches to X-ray sources detected by Chandra in the Cygnus OB2 association into foreground, member, and background objects. We employ a variety of X-ray, optical, and infrared characteristics to construct likelihoods using training sets defined by well-measured sources. Combinations of optical photometry from SDSS (riz) and IPHAS (riHa), IR magnitudes from UKIDSS and 2MASS (JHK), X-ray quantiles and hardness ratios, and estimates of extinction Av are used to compute the relative probabilities that a given source belongs to one of the classes. We use Principal Component Analysis of photometric magnitude combinations to isolate the best axes for classification. We incorporate measurement errors into the classification. We evaluate the accuracy of the classification by inspection and reclassify a number of sources based on IR magnitudes, presence of disks, and X-ray spectral hardness. We also consider systematic errors due to extinction. We find that about 6100 objects are association members, 1400 are background, and 500 are foreground objects. Multi-planet systems are valuable arenas for investigating exoplanet architectures and comparing planetary siblings. TOI-1246 is one such system, with a moderately bright K dwarf ($\rm{V=11.6,~K=9.9}$) and four transiting sub-Neptunes identified by TESS with orbital periods of $4.31~\rm{d},~5.90~\rm{d},~18.66~\rm{d}$, and $~37.92~\rm{d}$. We collected 130 radial velocity observations with Keck/HIRES and TNG/HARPS-N to measure planet masses. We refit the 14 sectors of TESS photometry to refine planet radii ($\rm{2.97 \pm 0.06~R_\oplus},\rm{2.47 \pm 0.08~R_\oplus}, \rm{3.46 \pm 0.09~R_\oplus}$, $\rm{3.72 \pm 0.16~R_\oplus}$), and confirm the four planets. We find that TOI-1246 e is substantially more massive than the three inner planets ($\rm{8.1 \pm 1.1 M_\oplus}$, $\rm{8.8 \pm 1.2 M_\oplus}$, $\rm{5.3 \pm 1.7 M_\oplus}$, $\rm{14.8 \pm 2.3 M_\oplus}$). The two outer planets, TOI-1246 d and TOI-1246 e, lie near to the 2:1 resonance ($\rm{P_{e}/P_{d}=2.03}$) and exhibit transit timing variations. TOI-1246 is one of the brightest four-planet systems, making it amenable for continued observations. It is one of only six systems with measured masses and radii for all four transiting planets. The planet densities range from $\rm{0.70 \pm 0.24}$ to $3.21 \pm 0.44 \rm{g/cm^3}$, implying a range of bulk and atmospheric compositions. We also report a fifth planet candidate found in the RV data with a minimum mass of 25.6 $\pm$ 3.6 $\rm{M_\oplus}$. This report is the result of a joint discussion between the Rubin and Euclid scientific communities. The work presented in this report was focused on designing and recommending an initial set of Derived Data products (DDPs) that could realize the science goals enabled by joint processing. All interested Rubin and Euclid data rights holders were invited to contribute via an online discussion forum and a series of virtual meetings. Gas cells containing ammonia and methane at atmospheric pressure were custom-made in our chemical laboratory. Low-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy of these gas cells were collected in our optical laboratory. They are compared with simulated spectra using the high-resolution transmission molecular absorption database (HITRAN) for temperatures of 300 K and 500 K, and with near-infrared spectra of late-T and Y dwarfs, Jupiter and Saturn. We selected for this investigation the spectral region between 1.5 and 1.7 microns (H-band) because it is covered by the Euclid red grism, it is particularly sensitive to the relative proportions of ammonia and methane opacity, and it is free from strong contributions of other abundant molecules such as water vapour. The laboratory spectra showed that the ammonia and methane features that are present in the simulations using the HITRAN database are incomplete. Using our laboratory spectra, we propose a modified version of the NH3-H spectral ratio with expanded integration limits that increases the amplitude of variation of the index with respect to spectral type. Combinations of our laboratory spectra were used to find the best fits to the observed spectra with the relative absorption ratio of ammonia to methane as a free parameter. A relationship was found between the T$\rm_{eff}$ and the ratio of ammonia to methane from spectral classes T5 to Y2 (1100 K -- 350 K), in qualitative fairly good agreement with theoretical predictions for high gravity objects and temperatures from 1100 K to 500 K. The ammonia to methane ratios in late-T and Y dwarfs are similar to that of Jupiter, suggesting a similar chemical composition. Simulations of the spectroscopic performance of Euclid suggest that it will yield T$\rm_{eff}$ values and ratios of ammonia to methane for over 10$^3$ late T dwarfs in the whole wide survey., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters

The theory of substellar evolution predicts that there is a sharp mass boundary between lithium and non-lithium brown dwarfs, not far below the substellar-mass limit. The imprint of thermonuclear burning is carved on the surface lithium abundance of substellar-mass objects during the first few hundred million years of their evolution, leading to a sharp boundary between lithium and non-lithium brown dwarfs, so-called, the lithium test. New optical spectroscopic observations of the binaries DENIS+J063001.4-184014 and DENIS+J225210.7-173013 obtained using the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio de Canarias are reported here. They allow us to re-determine their combined optical spectral types (M9.5 and L6.5, respectively) and to search for the presence of the LiI resonance doublet. The non detection of the LiI feature in the combined spectrum of DENIS\,J063001.4$-$184014AB is converted into estimates for the depletion of lithium in the individual components of this binary system. In DENIS\,J225210.7$-$173013AB we report the detection of a weak LiI feature which we tentatively ascribe as arising from the contribution of the T3.5-type secondary. Combining our results with data for seven other brown dwarf binaries in the literature treated in a self-consistent way, we confirm that there is indeed a sharp transition in mass for lithium depletion in brown dwarfs, as expected from theoretical calculations. We estimate such mass boundary is observationally located at 51.48$^{+0.22}_{-4.00}$ $M_\mathrm{Jup}$, which is lower than the theoretical determinations., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We explore the stellar content of the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) Data Release 2 and show its potential to identify low-metallicity stars using the Stellar Parameters Estimation based on Ensemble Methods (SPEEM) pipeline. SPEEM is a tool to provide determinations of atmospheric parameters for stars and separate stellar sources from quasars, using the unique J-PLUS photometric system. The adoption of adequate selection criteria allows the identification of metal-poor star candidates suitable for spectroscopic follow-up. SPEEM consists of a series of machine learning models which uses a training sample observed by both J-PLUS and the SEGUE spectroscopic survey. The training sample has temperatures Teff between 4\,800 K and 9\,000 K; $\log g$ between 1.0 and 4.5, and $-3.1<[Fe/H]<+0.5$. The performance of the pipeline has been tested with a sample of stars observed by the LAMOST survey within the same parameter range. The average differences between the parameters of a sample of stars observed with SEGUE and J-PLUS, which were obtained with the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline and SPEEM, respectively, are $\Delta Teff\sim 41$ K, $\Delta \log g\sim 0.11$ dex, and $\Delta [Fe/H]\sim 0.09$ dex. A sample of 177 stars have been identified as new candidates with $[Fe/H]<-2.5$ and 11 of them have been observed with the ISIS spectrograph at the William Herschel Telescope. The spectroscopic analysis confirms that $64\%$ of stars have $[Fe/H]<-2.5$, including one new star with $[Fe/H]<-3.0$. SPEEM in combination with the J-PLUS filter system has shown the potential to estimate the stellar atmospheric parameters (Teff, $\log g$, and [Fe/H]). The spectroscopic validation of the candidates shows that SPEEM yields a success rate of $64\%$ on the identification of very metal-poor star candidates with $[Fe/H]<-2.5$., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomy & Astrophysics Journal

The notion of a contractible transformation on a graph was introduced by Ivashchenko as a means to study molecular spaces arising from digital topology and computer image analysis, and more recently has been applied to topological data analysis. Contractible transformations involve a list of four elementary moves that can be performed on the vertices and edges of a graph, and it has been shown by Chen, Yau, and Yeh that these moves preserve the simple homotopy type of the underlying clique complex. A graph is said to be ${\mathcal I}$-contractible if one can reduce it to a single isolated vertex via a sequence of contractible transformations. Inspired by the notions of collapsible and non-evasive simplicial complexes, in this paper we study certain subclasses of ${\mathcal I}$-contractible graphs where one can collapse to a vertex using only a subset of these moves. Our main results involve constructions of minimal examples of graphs for which the resulting classes differ. We also relate these classes of graphs to the notion of $k$-dismantlable graphs and $k$-collapsible complexes, which also leads to a minimal counterexample to an erroneous claim of Ivashchenko from the literature. The binary nature of the M8.5 dwarf DENIS J063001.4$-$184014AB (DE0630$-$18) was discovered with astrometric monitoring from the ground, which determined the unresolved photocentric orbit and the trigonometric parallax of the system. Here we present radial-velocity monitoring and resolved observations in the near-infrared with Keck aperture masking that allow us to measure the system's relative separation and brightness. By combining all available information, we determine the individual dynamical masses of the binary components to be $M_1 = 0.052^{+0.009}_{-0.008} M_\mathrm{Sun}$ and $M_2 = 0.052^{+0.005}_{-0.004} M_\mathrm{Sun}$, both firmly in the substellar regime. These masses are surprising given the object's M8.5 optical spectral type and equivalent absolute magnitude, and the significant difference in brightness between the components ($\Delta{K}$ = 1.74$\pm$0.06 mag). Our results suggest that DE0630$-$18 is a relatively young system ($\sim$200 Myr) with a secondary component that is itself a potentially unresolved binary., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

MAAT is proposed as a visitor mirror-slicer optical system that will allow the OSIRIS spectrograph on the 10.4-m Gran telescopio CANARIAS (GTC) the capability to perform Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) over a seeing-limited FoV 14.20''x10'' with a slice width of 0.303''. MAAT@GTC will enhance the resolution power of OSIRIS by 1.6 times as compared to its 0.6'' wide long-slit. All the eleven OSIRIS grisms and volume-phase holographic gratings will be available to provide broad spectral coverage with moderate resolution (R=600 up to 4100) in the 3600 - 10000 {\AA} wavelength range. MAAT unique observing capabilities will broaden its use to the needs of the GTC community to unveil the nature of most striking phenomena in the universe well beyond time-domain astronomy. The GTC equipped with OSIRIS+MAAT will also play a fundamental role in synergy with other facilities, some of them operating on the northern ORM at La Palma. We mainly aim to search for the lithium depletion boundary (LDB) among the sub-stellar population of the open star cluster Coma Berenices. We carried out a search for brown dwarf (BD) candidates using colour-magnitude diagrams combining optical and infrared photometry from the latest public releases of the following large-scale surveys: UKIRT/UKIDSS, Pan-STARRS, SDSS, and AllWISE. We checked astrometric consistency with cluster membership using $Gaia$ DR2. A couple dozen new candidate BDs located inside the tidal radius of Coma Ber are reported, but none of these are significantly fainter and cooler than previously known members. A search for Li in three new and five previously known BD candidate cluster members was performed via spectroscopic observations using the OSIRIS instrument at the 10.4-m GTC. No LiI resonance doublet at 6707.8 A was detected in any of eight Coma Ber targets in the magnitude range J=15--19 and G=20--23 observed with the GTC. Spectral types and radial velocities were derived from the GTC spectra. These values confirm the cluster membership of four L2--L2.5 dwarfs, two of which are new in the literature. The large Li depletion factors found among the four bona fide BD members in Coma Ber implies that the LDB must be located at spectral type later than L2.5 in this cluster. Using the latest evolutionary models for BDs, a lower limit of 550 Myr on the cluster age is set. This constraint has been combined with other dating methods to obtain an updated age estimate of 780$\pm$230 Myr for the Coma Ber open cluster. Identification of significantly cooler sub-stellar cluster members in Coma Ber awaits the advent of the Euclid wide survey, which should reach a depth of about J=23; this superb sensitivity will make it possible to determine the precise location of the sub-stellar LDB in this cluster and to carry out a complete census of its sub-stellar population., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

In [A. V. Ivashchenko, Contractible transformations do not change the homology groups of graphs, Discrete Mathematics 126 (1) (1994) p 159,170], Ivashchenko started with the study of contractible graphs, he began with this because they have application to molecular spaces. But in a second paper [A. V. Ivashchenko, Some properties of contractible transformations on graphs, Discrete Mathematics 133 (1) (1994) p 139,145], he made several mistakes. We show in this paper that the results in that second paper are false or the proofs are wrong.

We classify the rational differential 1-forms with simple poles and simple zeros on the Riemann sphere according to their isotropy group; when the 1-form has exactly two poles the isotropy group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{C}^{*}$, namely $\{z\mapsto az\ \vert\ a\in\mathbb{C}, a\neq0\}$, and when the 1-form has $k\geq 3$ poles the isotropy group is finite. In particular we show that all the finite subgroups of $PSL(2,\mathbb{C})$ are realizable as isotropy groups for a rational 1-form on $\widehat{\mathbb{C}}$. We also present local and global geometrical conditions for their classification. The classification result enables us to describe the moduli space of rational 1-forms with finite isotropy that have exactly $k$ simple poles and $k-2$ simple zeros on the Riemann sphere. Moreover, we provide sufficient (geometrical) conditions for when the 1-forms are isochronous. Concerning the recent work of J.C.~Langer, we reflect on the strong relationship between our work and his and provide a partial answer regarding polyhedral geometries that arise from rational quadratic differentials on the Riemann sphere., Comment: 40 pages, 12 figures

The family of $\mathfrak{I}$-contractible graphs and contractible transformations was defined by A. Ivashchenko in the mid-90's. In this paper we study the collapsibility and homological properties of the clique complex associated to $\mathfrak{I}$-contractible graphs. We show that for any graph in a special subfamily of the $\mathfrak{I}$-contractible graphs (the strong $\mathfrak{I}$-contractible ones) its clique complex is collapsible. Moreover, we present an algorithm that allows us to verify if any graph is strong $\mathfrak{I}$-contractible, as well as an algorithm to delete those vertices whose open neighborhood is also strong $\mathfrak{I}$-contractible. Finally, we show how to use these algorithms to compute the persistent homology of an arbitrary Vietoris-Rips complex for applications in topological data analysis., Comment: 16 pages. Determination of the lithium depletion boundary (LDB), i.e., the observational limit below which the cores of very low-mass objects do not reach high enough temperature for Li destruction, has been used to obtain ages for several open clusters and stellar associations younger than 200 Myr, which until now has been considered as the practical upper limit on the range of applicability of this method. In this work we show that the LDB method can be extended to significant older ages than previously thought. Intermediate resolution optical spectra of six L-type candidate members in the Hyades cluster obtained using OSIRIS at the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias are presented. The Li~I 670.8~nm resonance doublet is clearly detected only in the two faintest and coolest of these objects, which are classified as L3.5 to L4 brown dwarf cluster members with luminosities around 10$^{-4}$ solar. Lithium depletion factors are estimated for our targets with the aid of synthetic spectra and they are compared with predictions from evolutionary models. A LDB age of 650$\pm$70 Myr for the Hyades provides a consistent description of our data using a set of state-of-the-art evolutionary models for brown dwarfs calculated by \citet{2015A&A..577..42}., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (February 2018)
