Le Gall (b) Keywords: Deep-towed seismic system; High resolution seismics; Geohazard; Slides; Pockmarks; Carbonate mounds Abstract: We present the technological development and initial results from the deep-towed seismic acquisition device SYsteme SIsmique Fond de mer (SYSIF) recently built by Ifremer. The two configurations of the SYSIF are presented (high resolution (HR): 250-1000Hz and very high resolution (VHR): 650-2000Hz), and results are compared to conventional seismic acquisition systems such as multi-channel HR or single-channel VHR (hull-mounted sub-bottom profiler). The ability of SYSIF to achieve higher resolution imagery is due to both the technology employed (low-frequency Janus-Helmoltz piezoelectric transducer) and the deep-towed operating mode (reduction in the Fresnel zone). Sea trials have been conducted in various geological environments and in water depths as deep as 2500m. The new technique improved imaging of deep seafloor and sub-surface features such as pockmarks, carbonate mounds, sub-marine slides and sub-surface faulting. SYSIF, therefore, is a well-suited tool to investigate deep water geological features, especially those related to geohazard for scientific and industrial purposes. Abstract

Very High Resolution (VHR) 3D seismic data were collected on the Adriatic shelf offshore the city of Ortona in order to define the small-scale geometric complexity of late Holocene deposits. Three groups of units are distinguished from the bottom up: (1) units U1 to U3 forming the Transgressive System Tract (TST); (2) units U4 and U5 representing the condensed interval deposited on the Maximum flooding surface (MFS) and the basal unit of the High stand System Tract (HST); and (3) U6 to U10 forming the progradational units of the HST. The muddy HST deposits show seafloor and subsurface sedimentary features over up to 40% of its extent on the Adriatic shelf. In the area offshore Ortona, the HST shows shore-parallel undulations in water depth of ca. 30–70 m and mud reliefs in water depth of ca. 70–110 m. The mud reliefs are subcircular in plan view and occur in swarms, perpendicular to the regional contour, that are connected to each other by shore-parallel junctions. The genesis of these features is interpreted as a combination of two different mechanisms: (1) sediment deformation in relation with the condensed section; and (2) depositional process related to shore-parallel currents interacting with topographic irregularities. The evolution of the HST sedimentary pattern is closely related to a “key unit” (U5) that influences both the seaward transition from linear to complex features and the stacking pattern.

29. The offshore Quaternary sediment bodies of the English Channel and its Western Approaches

Abstract

After a short review of present-day surficial sediments on the sea-floor of the English Channel and its Western Approaches, this paper summarises recent results on the Present–Quaternary sandy accumulations (tidal bank systems), based on sea-floor imaging, very high-resolution seismic surveys and a few piston cores. The English Channel, a typical funnel-shaped tidal shelf, is presently starved of terrigenous sediments. Most of mobile sediments at the sea-floor are autochthonous, either skeletal carbonates or siliciclastic sands reworked from old littoral deposits or incised valley fills. Three zones are considered: the Central (and western Central) Channel, which is a bedload parting zone characterised by a pebbly lag making up the sole of the Quaternary sediments throughout the shelf area;the Eastern Channel, a flood-dominated area characterised by medium to fine siliciclastic sands, mainly of aeolian periglacial origin;the Western Approaches, an ebb-dominated area with a polygenic sediment cover characterised by coarse, carbonate-rich, gravelly to muddy sands of marine to glaciomarine origin, with a diachronous faunal content.These sediments are sourced by reworking of a former littoral barrier or incised valley fills. The seismic stratigraphy of Quaternary sediment accumulations (10–50 m) points to the predominant control of tidal dynamics, together with the general interplay between the Channel morphology and the sea-level story. The thickest deposits in the Eastern Channel and Western Approaches are built up into bank systems. Whereas the interpretation of the active Eastern Channel banks finds a general agreement, the ‘moribund’ banks in the Western Approaches (i.e. the southern Celtic Banks) remains under debate, owing to the lack of long cores. In our hypothesis, both systems were built up during the last post-glacial sea-level rise. The Celtic Banks would represent the tidal transgressive systems tract whereas the Eastern Channel banks correspond to the highstand systems tract. The architecture of both bank systems is studied from two examples, the Bassure de Baas bank in the Eastern Channel and the Kaiser Bank in the Western Approaches. Both examples show transgressive features. The Bassure de Baas exhibits from base to top: an estuarine mouth barrier, a wave erosion surface, a shoreface bank and finally a ‘classic’ tidal bank. By contrast, the Kaiser Bank consists of the offshore reworking of fully marine deposits. Its base would correspond to the amalgamation of the last glacial sea-level fall with a strong tidal ravinement surface. From base to top, the bank underwent: tidal-bar accretion, very large dune-field aggradation, perched-channels incision, storm erosion and deposition. This interpretation still needs to be modelled. For instance, the channels perched at the top of the Kaiser Bank point to an erosional peak, which could be related to a tidal resonance episode within the Western Approaches basin.

Abstract

The IGUANES cruise took place in May 2013 on the R/V L'Atalantealong the Demerara passive transform margin off French Guiana and Surinam. Seismic, multibeam and chirp acquisitions were made. Piston cores were collected for pore geochemistry and sedimentology. A mooring was deployed on the sea-bottom for 10 months (temperature, salinity, turbidity and current measurements). This new dataset highlights the lateral variability of the 350 km-long Guiana–Surinam transform margin due to the presence of a releasing bend between two transform segments. The adjacent Demerara Plateau is affected by a 350 km-long giant slide complex. This complex initiated in Cretaceous times and was regularly reactivated until recent times. Since the Miocene, contourite processes seem to be active due to the onset of the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) bottom current. A main NADW water vein flows towards SE, eroding slide headscarps and allowing the deposition of contourite drifts. Numerous depressions looking like comet tails or comet scours record this flow. Some of those were interpreted before the cruise as active pockmarks. Pore geochemistry and core analysis do not show any evidence of present-day gas seepage.

Abstract

Geophysical data and sampling of the Golo Basin ( East Corsica margin) provide the opportunity to study mass balance in a single drainage system over the last 130 kyr, by comparing deposited sediments in the sink and the maximum eroded volume in the source using total denudation proxies. Evaluation of the solid sediments deposited offshore and careful integration of uncertainties from the age model and physical properties allow us to constrain three periods of sedimentation during the last climatic cycle. The peak of sedimentation initiated during Marine Isotopic Stage ( MIS) 3 ( ca. 45 ka) and lasted until late in MIS 2 ( ca. 18 ka). This correlates with Mediterranean Sea palaeoclimatic records and the glaciation in high altitude Corsica. The yield of solid sediment into the Golo Basin drops in the observed present day Mediterranean basins (gauging stations), whereas the palaeo-denudation estimate derived from the sediments over the last glacial period is one to ten times higher than that predicted using cosmogenic or thermochronometer estimates of exhumation. The catchment-wide denudation rate calculated from deposited solid sediment ranges from 47 to 219 mm kyr−1, which is higher than the estimate from palaeosurface ablation in the proximal part of the source (9-140 mm kyr−1) and lower than the distal, narrow, incised channel of the Golo River (160-475 mm kyr−1). This mismatch raises questions about the investigation of denudation at millennial-time scale (kyr) and at higher integrating times (Myr) as a reliable tool for determining the effect of climate change on mountain building and on sedimentary basin models.
