We compare results from the CMAQ photochemical model for mercury deposition in Florida with measurements from 2009 associated with the Florida Mercury TMDL project, with focus on the question: can model predictions for the impact of local versus global emissions be validated versus measurements? Model wet deposition shows reasonable agreement with measurements, and the lack of variation between sites in Florida in both model and measurements is consistent with the model prediction for limited impact from local sources. Local sources have a larger impact on dry deposition. However, the model overestimates ambient RGM by a factor of 10 versus measured values.

Atmospheric deposition of mercury (Hg) is a major process that contributes mercury loadings in ecosystems resulting in the bioaccumulation of mercury in fish and other wildlife that has prompted public health concerns. Although methods for measuring mercury that is wet deposited have been well studied, there are limited established methods for directly measuring dry deposition of atmospheric mercury. A new method using a turf surrogate surface (TSS) technique was developed to address limitations in published dry deposition collection methods. This method was deployed on a large scale for the first time during measurement intensives conducted as part of a Hg Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) project in Florida, USA. Wet and dry deposition of mercury were measured at 15 sites in Florida in 2009 and 11 sites in 2010. The dry deposition of mercury measured during the month-long intensives ranged from 0.6 μg/m2 to 2.1 μg/m2. Wet deposition of mercury measured during the month-long intensives ranged from 1.5 μg/m2 to 6.9 μg/m2. A North-South spatial gradient was observed for wet deposition of mercury; however, dry deposition of mercury displayed more general variability.

The high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) based on the polybenzimidazole (PBI) membrane doped with phosphoric acid (H3PO4) presents a promising route in the development of fuel cell technology. The higher operating temperature of 160–200 °C results in an increased tolerance of the platinum catalyst to the carbon monoxide, an improved electrode kinetics, a higher-grade heat produced by the fuel cell, and a simplified water management due to the absence of liquid water in the system. In this study, the accelerated stress test protocol (AST) corresponding to the Driving Duty Cycle was used to characterize two sets of commercial MEAs, by Danish Power Systems Ltd. and FuMA-tech GmbH, respectively. Performance characteristics prior to and after the AST procedure were measured. The changes in the resistivity of the MEA were examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The EIS data were analysed and interpreted by a suitable equivalent circuit that consisted of a resistor and the Voigt’s structure in series with constant phase elements. Conducted experiments and their analysis showed suitability of the HT-PEMFC technology in applications where dynamical load of the cell is expected. Moreover, the lower number of AST cycles did not seriously affect the cell performance. As expected, with increasing number of AST cycles, decrease in the cell performance was observed. In general, presented comparative study is expected to provide an extension of existing data for present and future development of diagnostic in the field of HT-PEMFC.

As was shown in the previous part of the study, windshields are an important part of the passive safety means of modern low-floor trams with an extraordinary effect on pedestrian safety in a pedestrian-tram collisions. Therefore, maximum attention must be paid to the definition of tram windshield characteristics. This article describes a windshield crash test, from which data are obtained to verify the feasibility of the applied computational approaches. A developed analytical model is utilised for a simple description of the energy balance during collision with an illustrative definition of the important parameters of laminated glass as well as their clear physical interpretations. The finite element analysis (FEA) performed in Ansys software using two versions of material definition, namely a simpler (*MAT_ELASTIC with nonlocal failure criterion) and a more complex (*MAT_GLASS with brittle stress-state-dependent failure) material model, which are presented as suitable for obtaining a detailed description of the shattering process of laminated glass, which can also be used effectively in windshield engineering.

This article represents the first paper in a two-part series dealing with safety during tram-pedestrian collisions. This research is dedicated to the safety of trams for pedestrians during collisions and is motivated by the increased number of lethal cases. The first part of this paper includes an overview of tram face development from the earliest designs to the current ones in use and, at the same time, provides a synopsis and explanation of the technical context, including a link to current and forthcoming legislation. The historical design development can be characterised by three steps, from an almost vertical front face, to leaned and pointed shapes, to the current inclined low-edged windshield without a protruding coupler. However, since most major manufacturers now export their products worldwide and customisation is only of a technically insignificant nature, our conclusions are generalisable (supported by the example of Berlin). The most advantageous shape of the tram's front, minimising the effects on pedestrians in all collision phases, has evolved rather spontaneously and was unprompted, and it is now being built into the European Commission regulations. The goal of the second part of this paper is to conduct a series of tram-pedestrian collisions with a focus on the frontal and side impacts using a crash test dummy (anthropomorphic test device-ATD). Four tram types approaching the collision at four different impact speeds (5 km/h, 10 km/h, 15 km/h, and 20 km/h) were used. The primary outcome variable was the resultant head acceleration. The risk and severity of possible head injuries were assessed using the head injury criterion ( HIC 15 ) and its linkage to the injury level on the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS). The results showed increasing head impacts with an increasing speed for all tram types and collision scenarios. Higher values of head acceleration were reached during the frontal impact (17-124 g) compared to the side one (2-84 g). The HIC 15 values did not exceed the value of 300 for any experimental setting, and the probability of AIS4+ injuries did not exceed 10%. The outcomes of tram-pedestrian collisions can be influenced by the ATD's position and orientation, the impact speed and front-end design of trams, and the site of initial contact.

Objective: The human motion system reacts to both hypo and hyperactivity loads by changes to the rheological properties of tissues. This study deals with changes to the axial system (AS) compartment. Using the appropriate methodologies and mathematical-physical methods, these changes can be identified and quantified., Methods: This study describes the noninvasive TVS (Transfer Vibration through Spine) method, which was applied to assess the AS selected mechanical properties in various modes. A pilot study was conducted on a top-level twelve-year-old girl-gymnast. The data detection was carried out in three cycles, before and after a peak 3.5 hour training session and the next day, after resting, just before the next training., Results: Specifically, the values of selected rheological parameters, the AS damping coefficient b and viscosity μ, were obtained. The dynamics of their changes, in the stated load cycles, has also been shown. The damping coefficient b fell from the value of 0.626 to 0.324 before training and increased to 0.394 after resting. The viscosity coefficient μ showed a similar trend, namely falling from the value of 9.85 [Pa.s] to 2.15 [Pa.s] and then increasing to 3.8 [Pa.s] ., Conclusions: With its computational solution, the TVS method,is a diagnostic apparatus making it possible to classify AS properties, both quantitatively and qualitatively, or its chosen segments and their changes, respectively. It can be used in classifying, preventing and treating the consequences of extreme motion and relaxing modes. The TVS application also makes it possible to control AS states over therapeutic, recovery, ergonomic and other loading modes of the human locomotion system.

The present study utilizes a recently developed literature model for the bone remodelling process to predict the evolution of bone density following Duracon total knee arthroplasty (TKA). In this model, which is based on chemical kinetics and irreversible thermodynamics, bone is treated as a self-organizing system capable of exchanging matter, energy, and entropy with its surroundings. Unlike previous models in which mechanical loading is regarded as the only stimulus for bone remodelling, the present model establishes a unique coupling between mechanical loading and the chemical reactions involved in the process of bone remodelling. This model was incorporated into the finite element software ANSYS by means of a macro to compute density distribution in distal femoral bone both before and after TKA. Consistent with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans reported in the literature, the results showed that the most severe bone loss occurs in the anterior region of the distal femur and that there is more bone resorption in the lateral than the medial condyle following TKA. Furthermore, the bone density distribution predicted using the present model showed a gradual and uniform pattern and thus a more realistic bone evolution contrary to the strain energy density model, where there is no gradual bone density evolution.

Understanding of the bone remodelling process has considerably increased during the last 20 years. Since the ability to simulate (and predict) the effects of bone remodelling offers substantial insights, several models have been proposed to describe this phenomenon. The strength of the presented model is that it includes biochemical control factors (e.g., the necessity of cell-to-cell contact, which is mediated by the RANKL-RANK-OPG chain during osteoclastogenesis) and mechanical stimulation, the governing equations are derived from interaction kinetics (e.g., mass is preserved in running reactions), and the parameters are measurable. Behaviour of the model is in accordance with experimental and clinical observations, such as the role of dynamic loading, the inhibitory effect of dynamic loading on osteoclastogenesis, the observation that polykaryon osteoclasts are activated and formed by a direct cell-to-cell contact, and the correct concentrations of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes. The model does not yet describe the bone remodelling process in complete detail, but the implemented simplifications describe the key features and further details of control mechanisms may be added.

A collaborative research study was conducted in order to improve our understanding of the source-to-receptor pathway for ambient fine particulate matter (aerodynamic diameter < or = 2.5 mu m; PM2.5) and subsequently to investigate the identity and sources of toxic components in PM2.5 responsible for adverse health effects in allergic humans. This research used a Harvard fine particle concentrator to expose Brown Norway rats, with and without ovalbumin-induced allergic airway disease, to concentrated air particles (CAPs) generated from ambient air in an urban Detroit community where the pediatric asthma rate was three times higher than the national average. Rats were exposed to CAPs during the exposure periods in July (mean = 676 microg/m3) and September (313 microg/m3) of 2000. Twenty-four hours after exposures lung lobes were either lavaged with saline to determine cellularity and protein in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), or removed for analysis by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to detect ambient PM2.5-derived trace element retention. PM2.5 trace elements of anthropogenic origin, lanthanum (La), vanadium (V), manganese (Mn), and sulfur (S), were recovered from the lung tissues of CAPs-exposed rats. Recovery of those pulmonary anthropogenic particles was further increased in rats with allergic airways. In addition, eosinophils and protein in BALF were increased only in allergic animals exposed to CAPs. These results demonstrate preferential retention in allergic airways of air particulates derived from identified local combustion sources after a short-term exposure. Our findings suggest that the enhancement of allergic airway responses by exposure to PM2.5 is mediated in part by increased pulmonary deposition and localization of potentially toxic elements in urban air., (Copyright Taylor & Francis Inc.)

Epidemiological studies have reported that elevated levels of particulate air pollution in urban communities are associated with increases in attacks of asthma based on evidence from hospital admissions and emergency department visits. Principal pathologic features of chronic airway diseases, like asthma, are airway inflammation and mucous hypersecretion with excessive amounts of luminal mucus and increased numbers of mucus-secreting cells in regions of the respiratory tract that normally have few or no mucous cells (ie, mucous cell metaplasia). The overall goal of the present project was to understand the adverse effects of urban air fine particulate matter (PM2.5; < or = 2.5 pm in aerodynamic diameter)* on normal airways and airways compromised with airway inflammation and excess mucus. Our project was specifically designed to (1) examine the chemical and physical characteristics of PM2.5 and other airborne pollutants in the outdoor air of a local Detroit community with a high incidence of childhood asthma; (2) determine the effects of this community-based PM2.5 on the airway epithelium in normal rats and rats compromised with preexisting hypersecretory airway diseases (ie, animal models of human allergic airway disease--asthma and chronic bronchitis); and (3) identify the chemical or physical components of PM2.5 that are responsible for PM2.5 -induced airway inflammation and epithelial alterations in these animal models. Two animal models of airway disease were used to examine the effects of PM2.5 exposure on preexisting hypersecretory airways: neutrophilic airway inflammation induced by endotoxin challenge in F344 rats and eosinophilic airway inflammation induced by ovalbumin (OVA) challenge in BN rats. A mobile air monitoring and exposure laboratory equipped with inhalation exposure chambers for animal toxicology studies, air pollution monitors, and particulate collection devices was used in this investigation. The mobile laboratory was parked in a community in southwestern Detroit during the summer months when particulate air pollution is usually high (July and September 2000). We monitored the outdoor air pollution in this community daily, and exposed normal and compromised rats to concentrated PM2.5 from this local urban atmosphere. Rats in the inhalation studies were exposed for 1 day or for 4 or 5 consecutive days (10 hours/day) to either filtered air (controls) or concentrated ambient particles (CAPs) delivered by a Harvard ambient fine particle concentrator. Rats were killed 24 hours after the end of the exposure. Biochemical, morphometric, and molecular techniques were used to identify airway epithelial and inflammatory responses to CAPs. Lung lobes were also either intratracheally lavaged with saline to determine cellular composition and protein in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) or removed for analysis by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICPMS) to detect retention of ambient PM2.5--derived trace elements. The Harvard concentrator effectively concentrated the fine ambient particles from this urban atmosphere (10-30 times) without significantly changing the major physicochemical features of the atmospheric particles. Daily CAPs mass concentrations during the 10-hour exposure period (0800-1800) in July ranged from 16 to 895 microg/m3 and in September ranged from 81 to 755 microg/m3. In general, chemical characteristics of ambient particles were conserved through the concentrator into the exposure chamber. Single or repeated exposures to CAPs did not cause adverse effects in the nasal or pulmonary airways of healthy F344 or BN rats. In addition, CAPs-related toxicity was not observed in F344 rats pretreated with bacterial endotoxin. Variable airway responses to CAPs exposure were observed in BN rats with preexisting allergic airway disease induced by OVA sensitization and challenge. Only OVA-challenged BN rats exposed to CAPs for 5 consecutive days in September 2000 had significant increases in airway mucosubstances and pulmonary inflammation compared to saline-challenged/air-exposed control rats. OVA-challenged BN rats that were repeatedly exposed to CAPs in July 2000 had only minor CAPs-related effects. In only the September 5-day exposure protocol, PM2.5 trace elements of anthropogenic origin (La, V, and S) were recovered from the lung tissues of CAPs-exposed rats. Recovery of these specific trace elements was greatest in rats with OVA-induced allergic airway disease. Additional laboratory experiments using intratracheal instillations of ambient PM2.5 samples were performed to identify bioactive agents in the CAPs to which rats had been exposed in the inhalation exposure component. Because the most pronounced effects of CAPs inhalation were found in BN rats with OVA-induced allergic airways exposed in September, we used ambient PM2.5 samples that were collected on 2 days during the September CAPs inhalation exposures to use for instillation. Ambient PM2.5 samples were collected, fractionated into soluble and insoluble species, and then compared with each other and with total PM2.5 for their effects in healthy BN rats and those with OVA-induced allergic airway disease. Intratracheal instillation of the insoluble fraction of PM2.5 caused mild neutrophilic inflammation in the lungs of healthy rats. However, total PM2.5 or the soluble or insoluble fractions instilled in rats with OVA-induced airway inflammation did not enhance the inflammation or the airway epithelial remodeling that was evident in some of the BN rats exposed to CAPs by inhalation. Therefore, the results from this instillation component did not suggest what fractions of the CAPs may have been responsible for enhancing OVA-induced airway mucosubstances and pulmonary inflammation observed in the inhalation exposure component. In summary, inhaled CAPs-related pulmonary alterations in the affected OVA-challenged rats appeared to be related to the chemical composition, rather than the mass concentration, to which the animals were exposed. Results of the trace element analysis in the lungs of CAPs-exposed BN rats exposed in September suggested that air particles derived from identified local combustion sources were preferentially retained in allergic airways. These results demonstrate that short-term exposures to CAPs from this southwestern Detroit community caused variable responses in laboratory rats and suggest that adverse biological responses to ambient PM2.5 may be associated more closely with local sources of particles and weather patterns than with particle mass.

Gamma-radiation sterilized Trypticase Soy Agar containing lecithin and polysorbate 80 (TSA++) (Becton Dickinson Microbiology Systems, Cockeysville, MD) and irradiated TSA++ (Adams Scientific, West Warwick, RI) were tested by a quantitative spread plate method. Four bacteria Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 10145, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 19615 and the yeast Candida albicans ATCC 10231 were tested in two separate experiments using different lots of media. A strain of Aspergillus niger ATCC 16404, was tested by a qualitative streak plate method. The Becton Dickinson Microbiology Systems (BDMS) irradiated TSA++ overall recovered a greater number of organisms than the Adams Scientific TSA++ in both experiments and allowed for the earlier recovery of S. pyogenes ATCC 19615. The growth of A. niger ATCC 16404, was comparable on both media. Efficacy of the media to neutralize 1, 2 and 3% phenol as well as 0.001, 0.01 and 0.1% benzalkonium chloride (BC) solutions was done by a disk diffusion method using 2 gram-positive and 4 gram-negative bacteria. Both media showed complete neutralization of the 0.001 and 0.01% BC solutions and partial neutralization of the 0.1% BC solution. The BDMS TSA++ showed better neutralization of the 2 and 3% phenol solutions than the Adams Scientific TSA++. This data indicates that not all irradiated TSA++ media perform in an equivalent manner.

A four-hour micromedia method which detects enzymes formed by bacteria for the degradion of carbohydrates was compared to the utilization of carbohydrates was compared to the utilization of carbohydrates in cystine tyrpticase agar (CTA) for the identification of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis. This rapid micromedia method (RMM) correlated 100% with the utilization of carbohydrates in CTA. Identification of N. gonorrhoeae by RMM was compared to the identification achieved by a commercially available coagglutination method and a fluorescent antibody (FA) technique. Of 144 isolates identified as N. gonorrhoeae by RMM, 122 (84.7%) were identified by coagglutination and 141 (97.9%) were identified by FA as N. gonorrhoeae. Five (13%) of 40 isolates identified as N. meningitidis by RMM were identified as N. gonorrhoeae by coagglutination while eleven (28%) were identified as N. gonorrhoeae by the FA technique. One (14%) and four (57%) of seven isolates identified as Neisseria species were identified as N. gonorrhoeae by coagglutination and the FA technique respectively. The rapid micromedia method was found to be a quick, sensitive, specific and economic way of identifying N. gonorrhoeae and N. meningitidis.

Cerebral blastomycosis may simulate a brain tumor. Its diagnosis is sometimes very difficult. The morphologic identification of the fungus may be misleading because it shares some common features with many other dimorphic fungi. Culturing and conversion of the organism from mycelial phase to yeast phase are not always successful. Immunofluorescent staining of the biopsy tissue is useful in confirming the diagnosis. However, a combination of double immunodiffusion (DID) test and complement fixation (CF) test makes the diagnosis more accurate and reliable. The direct role of macrophages in defending the host against blastomycosis is illustrated by electron microscopy.

Four glutaraldehyde disinfectants (Cidex, Glutarex, Sonacide, and Sporicidin) were tested in routine use in the Cidematic washer to identify the most economic, effective disinfectant among them. An in vitro killing test with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (10-min exposure) and Mycobacterium smegmatis (20-min exposure) was used. All four disinfectants were effective prior to first use. In the use tests, Cidex killed both organisms for its claimed effectiveness period of 2 weeks. Glutarex was effective against Pseudomonas for its claimed effectiveness period of 4 weeks but was effective against Mycobacterium only 3 weeks. Sonacide, claimed to be effective for 4 weeks, killed Pseudomonas for 2 weeks but was ineffective against Mycobacterium after 1 week. Sporicidin (1:15 dilution), claimed to be effective for 30 days, did not kill either test organism after 5 days. Glutarex used for a 3-week period was found to be the most economic, effective substitute for Cidex in the Cidematic machine.

In children receiving multiple antibiotics and total parenteral nutrition (TPN), the amount of nutrition received can be less than optimal if the central venous line is used for administration of blood products, antibiotics and other medications. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the compatibility of commonly used antibiotics in our standard hyperalimentation solution to determine whether these drugs could be administered in a "piggyback" fashion with parenteral nutrition. If there were no incompatibility this could allow significantly more TPN to be delivered without need for extra fluid in patients receiving antibiotics several times daily. We found 13 antibiotics (amikacin, azlocillin, cefamandole, cephalothin, gentamicin, mezlocillin, moxalactam, nafcillin, oxacillin, penicillin, piperacillin, ticarcillin and tobramycin) to be stable for 6 hours and compatible with the TPN solution. They could be safely given in the presence of the hyperalimentation preparation (1.5% amino acid, 15% dextrose, vitamins, calcium (300 mg/liter) and standard electrolyte concentrations).

Over a 12 month period, 61 isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MR-SA) were obtained in 23 hospitalized patients. Eight-six per cent of the patients were over 50 years of age, and 91 per cent were in the postoperative period. In 10 patients (42 per cent), MR-SA was the major pathogen, producing either pneumonia, empyema, osteomyelitis, lung abscess, enterocolitis, wound infection or bacteremia with sepsis. Three patients in this group died despite therapy with antibiotics with in vitro activity against these organisms. All the patients probably acquired their MR-SA in the hospital, and five carriers of the organism were identified among hospital personnel. This outbreak demonstrates the ability of MR-SA not only to colonize many patients in a relatively brief period of time, but also to produce serious disease.

Five patients in a newborn intensive care unit (NICU) developed primary bacteremia due to Klebsiella during a 12-day period, May 2 through June 2, 1979, after feeding for 24-96 hr with contaminated breast milk. All patients had been fed via nasoduodenal tube with milk obtained from a single donor. The donor milk collected via electric suction pump was positive by gram stain for gram-negative rods and by culture for Klebsiella pneumoniae. A culture of hand-expressed milk was negative for gram-negative rods. The breast-pump tubing and safety trap were grossly contaminated with K. pneumoniae. Institution of proper sterilization to the pump equipment controlled the outbreak. This outbreak is the first documentation of nosocomial bacteremia as a major infectious complication of feedings of premature infants with contaminated breast milk.

In March 1978, a strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was introduced from the community into a university hospital. Within 6 months of admission of the index case, methicillin-resistant S. aureus was isolated from 30 additional patients, 22 of whom were epidemiologically linked by a common phage type (6/47/54/75/83A) and roommate-to-roommate spread. Sixteen of 31 cases were infected, six with bacteremia. Patients with infections received cephalosporins more frequently before infection than did control subjects (p < 0.05). Patients acquiring methicillin-resistant S. aureus in the intensive care unit had a longer mean stay, had higher overall mortality, and received nafcillin and aminoglycosides more frequently than did cohorted control subjects. By mid-1979, methicillin-resistant S. aureus accounted for 38%, 31%, and 24% of all nosocomial S. aureus postoperative wound, pulmonary, and bloodstream infections, respectively. In hospitals with significant methicillin-resistant S. aureus isolation rates, initial empiric therapy of presumed S. aureus infection with vancomycin seems warranted.

Plasmid profiling was used to determine the variability of normal flora isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis in order to evaluate the usefulness of plasmid profiling for identifying pathogens. Fifteen hospital staff members and patients repeatedly had cultures taken from the hands and nares, and multiple isolates were examined for plasmid profiles. S epidermidis isolated from the nares of 15 neonates were also examined. The total number of isolates examined for plasmid profiles was 726. Repetition of profiles was common among the different isolates from a single sampling (one swab). The frequency of re-isolating similar profiles on different days varied from 7% to 13%. Simultaneous isolation of similar profiles from nares and hands on the same individual varied from 0% to 11%, the percentage being lower for personnel. Isolation of the same plasmid profile from different individuals occurred only twice and resulted in an assignment probability of Pa = 0.002 for isolates obtained from different individuals. Significantly more isolates from nares contained plasmids (97%) compared with isolates from hands (89%). Patients who had two or more isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci with similar profiles were judged, clinically, to have infections in 12 of 13 cases. However, the likelihood of re-isolating an S epidermidis strain with a similar plasmid profile twice from the same person at different times was sufficiently high to prevent plasmid profiling from being used as an absolute criterion for infection.

Using a commercially available dip stick 601 urine specimens were screened for leukocytes and bacteria by testing for the presence of leukocyte esterase and nitrite. The screening method was found to have a sensitivity of 88.7% and a predictive value of negative results of 98.5%.

Isolates of Escherichia coli and Salmonella species obtained from humans, animals, and their rural environments were tested for their ability to transfer multiple drug resistance to competent recipients. In all, 125 (52.9%) of 242 isolates of E.coli transferred all or part of their resistance to E.coli CSH-2, and 103 (44.4%) of 232 isolates of E.coli transferred all or part of their resistance to Salmonella choleraesuis var. kuzendorf 214. The data suggest that the multiple drug resistance of E.coli transferred all or part of their resistance to Salmonella choleraesuis var kuzendorf 214. The data suggest that the multiple drug resistance of E. coli in the gut of humans who work with livestock may be due to the transfer of resistance determinants from animal strains to the resident flora of the human gut. In all, 48 (80%) of 60 isolates of Salmonella transferred all or part of their resistance to E. coli CSH-2, and isolates of Salmonella transferred all or part of their resistance to E.coli CSH-2, and 42 (82.4%) of 51 isolates of Salmonella transferred all or part of their resistance to S. choleraesuis var, kuzendorf 214. Fifty-three (46.9%) of 113 antibiotic-sensitive isolates of E.coli possessed resistance transfer factor, and six (23.1%) of 26 isolates with resistance transfer factor mobilized resistance determinants in isolates unable to transfer drug resistance during conjugation experiments.
