910 - Abstract
The study investigated men and women's engagement with education in two South Wales valley communities across three generations. It drew upon theoretical tools from social representations theory (Moscovici, 1984) to map dominant social representations circulating in two South Wales valley communities—Abertillery and Ynysawdre. Both communities had experienced a traumatic rupture in community life due to the closure of coal mining in their locales. This study understands social representations as belonging to communities, anchored in the strategies and practices that are particular to that locale and its specific history, and recognises that they influence action and interaction. A snowball sampling method was used to recruit men and women of three generations—16–25 years, 30–45 years and 50–70 years—who were given two research instruments. The first instrument was a semi-structured photo-elicitation interview. The photographs re-presented aspects of the visual and material culture of the locale. Questions related to the locale and to experiences of education and work. The second instrument was an unstructured interview that elicited experiences of education and work. A thematic analysis identified themes, or social representations, that related to the dominant social representations of education and work. Although individual accounts were elicited, differences in the appropriation of social representations and the meanings they held were found between locales, between generations and between genders. Data from both instruments allowed the structure of social representations within each locale to be mapped, which illustrated gender differences and change across generations. A narrative analysis of individual accounts demonstrated how social representations circulating in the locale became psychically active and acted as symbolic resources as individuals and groups made sense of the rupture in the community. Local communities constrain and facilitate what is available for constructing narrative accounts and social identities in relation to education and work, which shift across time.

- Abstract
This kit of materials, designed for trainers of adult literacy teachers, attempts to capture the experience of five adult literacy workers from Mozambique on a study tour of Nicaragua and Brazil, and to introduce the user to the concept, methodology, and tools of "popular literacy." The kit both reports an experience and offers a set of resources, but is not intended as a teacher training curriculum. The materials consist of a users' guide, background documents, activities and tools for popular literacy workers, and information on available resources. The background documents include articles on southern-hemisphere educational exchanges as an approach to staff training, an address to adult educators about popular education in Latin America, and education and the struggle for popular power in Mozambique. Nine activities and tools for classroom use are contained in the kit, including games, role-plays, a sociodrama, a text, a comic book, methodological guides, and descriptions of participatory techniques. The resource section contains documentation on popular education methodology and experiences, and a list of groups contacted during the exchange program. - Abstract
The relationship between literacy and "people's power" within the context of Mozambique's project of socialist reconstruction was explored through an ethnographic analysis of literacy education practices at the Matola Industrial Company, which is considered one of many embodiments of Mozambique's colonial past. First, the role of the colonial schooling system as an instrument to create failure rather than success in schooling and thus regulate flows of cheap labor was examined along with the relationship between literacy, the popular state, and people's power and the spontaneous movement of self-education in Mozambique. Next, qualitative methods were used to examine the following: the fundamental tensions between time for schooling and time for production in the workplace-based literacy program at the Matola Industrial Company; the role of literacy centers as "spaces" for social communication; the interlocking hierarchies organized through class, race/ethnicity, and gender that affect literacy students' and teachers' lives; and experiences of literacy as indicators of fundamental problems in the broader process of socialist construction and the movement for renewal within state-sponsored literacy programs. (Contains 18 tables/figures and 181 references. Appended are the survey instrument and two discussion documents examining problematic areas in ABE in the Matola Industrial Company.) (MN)

19. The Process of Retirement: The Rural Self Employed.

- Abstract
The timing and nature of the process of retirement for self-employed individuals were investigated. Subjects were 25 farm couples and 24 non-farm couples, all residing in rural Alberta, Canada. Both groups were matched on age, income, and education. Findings support the existence of a retirement process with a developmental sequence beginning at about age 49 for men and age 47 for women. The process is characterized by a sequence of concerns with financial planning beginning at a mean age of 48, time planning at about age 50, and discussions with one's spouse regarding retirement at about age 54. Planning becomes important at somewhat different times for farmers and non-farmers and for men and women, as do the specific concerns. However, for all groups, the sequence of planning was constant. - Abstract
This report provides materials from the second meeting of the International Task Force on Literacy (ITFL), which focused on specific goals and targets for nongovernmental organization (NGO) mobilization for 1990, International Literacy Year (ILY). Section 2 discusses issues that emerged as central to work in literacy, including literacy, democracy, and empowerment; images of literacy and the illiterate; technical/pedagogical goals versus political/ideological goals; role of teachers in literacy; illiteracy in industrialized countries; women's experiences of literacy; Unesco's vital role in literacy; how high a priority literacy really is; literacy actions by NGOs; and a research agenda for literacy. Section 3 summarizes these reports to the Task Force: International Council for Adult Education Needs Assessment Survey of Member Associations, a project proposal for a video-based resource package linking the theme of peace to literacy; a proposal to create a special book for ILY written by literacy learners; and proposals to educate and mobilize world public opinion about literacy through the arts. Chapter 4 sets forth the framework of a common strategy for ILY. Components are identified for five broad areas: creating public awareness, creating and strengthening literacy structures, stimulating a "great debate" on literacy, encouraging literacy research and evaluation, and ITFL Coordinating Office activities. Outlines of plans of action of international NGOs prior to, during, and beyond ILY 1990 are appended. (YLB)

Biodiversity ,Taxonomy - Abstract
azteca Saussure, 1862: 230 [Corydia (Holocompsa)] Mexico calida. Unspecified series. Saussure (1870) stated that he had three ♂ and six ♀ from the “Cordillère orientale”. The MHNG collection contains eleven specimens, but four of them (MHNG- ARTO-20460 to MHNG-ARTO-20463) were sent from Costa Rica by Paul Biolley, a Swiss teacher who lived in Costa Rica from 1885 to 1908, and therefore cannot be part of the type series. The remaining specimens, all from Mexico, are probably part of the type series. A ♀ specimen (MHNG-ARTO-20453) with labels: “540 16, Vera Cruz t.c., Mexique, Vge. de Saussure ” [handwritten on ruled white card]; “ Holocompsa azteca Sss. ♀ ” [handwritten on green paper]; “ Syntypus ” [printed on red paper]. The specimen is directly pinned, with the wings roughly folded. There is insect feeding damage to the thorax, and the left antenna, the left front leg, the tibia and tarsi of the left middle leg, the entire right middle leg and left hind leg and the tarsi of the right hind leg are missing. A ♀ specimen (MHNG-ARTO-20454) with labels: “ ♀, Moyoapan, Mexique, env. Sumichrast ” [handwritten on ruled white card]; “ Holocompsa azteca Sauss. ♀ ” [handwritten on green paper]; “ Syntypus ” [printed on red paper]. The specimen is directly pinned, with the wings roughly folded. Both antennae, the right front leg and the tarsi of the left hind leg are lost. A ♂ specimen (MHNG-ARTO-20455) with labels: “ ♂ Mexique, M H de Saussure” [handwritten on ruled white card]; “ Holocompsa azteca Sss. ♂ ” [handwritten on green paper]; “ Syntypus ” [printed on red paper]. The specimen is directly pinned, with the wings folded. The ends of the antennae, both front legs, the tibia and tarsi of the left middle leg, the tarsi of the left hind leg and the entire right hind leg are lost. A ♀ specimen (MHNG-ARTO-20456) with labels: “ ♀ Mexique, Sumichrast ” [handwritten on ruled white card]; “ Holocompsa azteca Sauss. ♀ ” [handwritten on green paper]; “ Syntypus ” [printed on red paper]. The specimen is directly pinned, with the wings roughly folded. The right antenna is missing. A ♂ specimen (MHNG-ARTO-20457) with labels: “ ♂ Mexique, Sumichrast ” [handwritten on ruled white card]; “ Holocompsa azteca Sss. ♂ ” [handwritten on green paper]; “ Syntypus ” [printed on red paper]. The specimen is directly pinned, with the wings folded. The tips of the antennae and the right hind leg are missing. A ♀ specimen (MHNG-ARTO-20458) with labels: “ ♀, Moyoapan, Mexique, env. Sumichrast ” [handwritten on ruled white card]; “ Holocompsa azteca Sss. ♀ ” [handwritten on green paper]; “ Syntypus ” [printed on red paper]. The specimen is directly pinned, with the wings roughly folded. Most of both antennae, the tarsi of the right hind leg and two tarsal segments of the left hind leg are lost. A ♀ specimen (MHNG-ARTO-20459) with labels: “ ♀, Orizaba, Mexique, Sumichrast ” [handwritten on ruled white card]; “ Holocompsa azteca Sauss. ♀ ” [handwritten on green paper]; “ Syntypus ” [printed on red paper]. The specimen is directly pinned, with the wings folded. The head, the left front leg, the right middle leg and the right hind leg are missing. Box Blattodea 59. There is a ♀ specimen in the NHMUK (BMNH(E)876462) with a data label “ ♀ Moyoapan, Mexique, env. binotata Saussure & Zehntner, 1894: 110, pl. 3, fig. 32 [Holocompsa] Guatemala; San Gerónimo (Champion). Unspecified number of ♀. Possibly conspecific ♂. The MHNG contains one ♂ specimen (MHNG- ARTO-20464) with labels: “Amer. trop., var. ♂, M H de Saussure” [handwritten on ruled white card]; “ Holocompsa binotata? ♂ Sauss.” [handwritten on green paper]. The specimen is directly pinned. Both antennae, both front legs, the right middle leg and both hind legs are lost. The left forewing and right hindwing are detached and glued to a card mount secured on the original pin. This specimen is the ♂ mentioned in the original description, but because it was only considered to be probably conspecific cannot be considered a syntype. Box Blattodea 59. There is a ♀ specimen in the NHMUK (BMNH(E)879466) with a data label “ S. Geronimo, Guatemala, Champion” [printed on white card] and referred to as a syntype in their online database. gueriniana Saussure, 1863: 140, fig. 7 [Corydia] Les Indes orientales; Sangor dans l’intérieur des Indes. Unspecified number of ♂. The MHNG collection contains one ♂ specimen (MHNG- ARTO-20470) with labels: “540 11, Sangor, Indes Or. ♂ coll. Guérin” [handwritten on ruled white card]; “ Corydia nuptualis ♂ Gerst.” [handwritten on yellow paper]; “ Syntype of C. gueriniana Sauss. Hollier 2019 ” [handwritten on red paper]. This specimen was placed with three others in the MHNG collection under the name Corydia nuptialis but the name label pinned in the box has “ nuptialis Gerst. (Gueriniana Sss.) ” handwritten on it. The data label and the entry in the acquisitions register identify it as a syntype of C. gueriniana. The specimen is directly pinned, with the wings spread. The left antenna, left front leg, four tarsal segments of the left middle leg and the last tarsal segment of the left hind leg are missing. Box Blattodea 59.
