Abstract

We present new JWST-NIRSpec IFS data for the luminous infrared galaxy NGC7469: a nearby (70.6Mpc) active galaxy with a Sy 1.5 nucleus that drives a highly ionized gas outflow and a prominent nuclear star-forming ring. Using the superb sensitivity and high spatial resolution of the JWST instrument NIRSpec-IFS, we investigate the role of the Seyfert nucleus in the excitation and dynamics of the circumnuclear gas. Our analysis focuses on the [Fe ii], H2, and hydrogen recombination lines that trace the radiation/shocked-excited molecular and ionized ISM around the AGN. We investigate the gas excitation through H2/Br{\gamma} and [Fe ii]/Pa\b{eta} emission line ratios and find that photoionization by the AGN dominates within the central 300 pc of the galaxy and together with a small region show ing signatures of shock-heated gas; these shock-heated regions are likely associated with a compact radio jet. In addition, the velocity field and velocity dispersion maps reveal complex gas kinematics. Rotation is the dominant feature, but we also identify non-circular motions consistent with gas inflows as traced by the velocity residuals and the spiral pattern in the Pa{\alpha} velocity dispersion map. The inflow is consistent with the mass outflow rate and two orders of magnitude higher than the AGN accretion rate. The compact nuclear radio jet has enough power to drive the highly ionized outflow. Abstract

We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) integral-field spectroscopy of the nearby luminous infrared galaxy, NGC 7469. We take advantage of the high spatial/spectral resolution and wavelength coverage of JWST /NIRSpec to study the 3.3 um neutral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) grain emission on ~60 pc scales. We find a clear change in the average grain properties between the star-forming ring and the central AGN. Regions in the vicinity of the AGN, with [NeIII]/[NeII]>0.25, tend to have larger grain sizes and lower aliphatic-to-aromatic (3.4/3.3) ratios indicating that smaller grains are preferentially removed by photo-destruction in the vicinity of the AGN. We find an overall suppression of the total PAH emission relative to the ionized gas in the central 1 kpc region of the AGN in NGC 7469 compared to what has been observed with Spitzer on 3 kpc scales. However, the fractional 3.3 um to total PAH power is enhanced in the starburst ring, possibly due to a variety of physical effects on sub-kpc scales, including recurrent fluorescence of small grains or multiple photon absorption by large grains. Finally, the IFU data show that while the 3.3 um PAH-derived star formation rate (SFR) in the ring is 8% higher than that inferred from the [NeII] and [NeIII] emission lines, the integrated SFR derived from the 3.3 um feature would be underestimated by a factor of two due to the deficit of PAHs around the AGN, as might occur if a composite system like NGC 7469 were to be observed at high-redshift., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, Submitted to ApJL

Abstract

We present the results of a {\it James Webb Space Telescope} NIRCam investigation into the young massive star cluster (YMC) population in the luminous infrared galaxy VV 114. We identify 374 compact YMC candidates with a $S/N \geq 3$, 5, and 5 at F150W, F200W, and F356W respectively. A direct comparison with our {\it HST} cluster catalog reveals that $\sim 20\%$ of these sources are undetected at optical wavelengths. Based on {\it yggdrasil} stellar population models, we identify 17 YMC candidates in our {\it JWST} imaging alone with F150W-F200W and F200W-F356W colors suggesting they are all very young, dusty ($A_{V} = 5 - 15$), and massive ($10^{5.8} < M_{\odot} < 10^{6.1}$). The discovery of these `hidden' sources, many of which are found in the `overlap' region between the two nuclei, quadruples the number of $t < 3$ Myr clusters, and nearly doubles the number of $t < 6$ Myr clusters detected in VV 114. Now extending the cluster age distribution ($dN/d\tau \propto \tau^{\gamma}$) to the youngest ages, we find a slope of $\gamma = -1.30 \pm 0.39$ for $10^{6} < \tau (\mathrm{yr}) < 10^{7}$, which is consistent with the previously determined value from $10^{7} < \tau (\mathrm{yr}) < 10^{8.5}$, and confirms that VV 114 has a steep age distribution slope for all massive star clusters across the entire range of cluster ages observed. Finally, the consistency between our {\it JWST}- and {\it HST}-derived age distribution slopes indicates that the balance between cluster formation and destruction has not been significantly altered in VV 114 over the last 0.5 Gyr., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, published in the Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) integral-field spectroscopy of the nearby merging, luminous infrared galaxy, NGC 7469. This galaxy hosts a Seyfert type-1.5 nucleus, a highly ionized outflow, and a bright, circumnuclear star-forming ring, making it an ideal target to study AGN feedback in the local Universe. We take advantage of the high spatial/spectral resolution of JWST/MIRI to isolate the star-forming regions surrounding the central active nucleus and study the properties of the dust and warm molecular gas on ~100 pc scales. The starburst ring exhibits prominent Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, with grain sizes and ionization states varying by only ~30%, and a total star formation rate of $\rm 10 - 30 \ M_\odot$/yr derived from fine structure and recombination emission lines. Using pure rotational lines of H2, we detect 1.2$\times$10$^{7} \rm \ M_\odot$ of warm molecular gas at a temperature higher than 200 K in the ring. All PAH bands get significantly weaker towards the central source, where larger and possibly more ionized grains dominate the emission. However, the bulk of the dust and molecular gas in the ring appears unaffected by the ionizing radiation or the outflowing wind from the AGN. Abstract

We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) imaging of NGC 7469 with the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI). NGC 7469 is a nearby, $z=0.01627$, luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) that hosts both a Seyfert Type-1.5 nucleus and a circumnuclear starburst ring with a radius of $\sim$0.5 kpc. The new near-infrared (NIR) JWST imaging reveals 66 star-forming regions, 37 of which were not detected by HST observations. Twenty-eight of the 37 sources have very red NIR colors that indicate obscurations up to A$_{\rm{v}}\sim7$ and a contribution of at least 25$\%$ from hot dust emission to the 4.4$\mu$m band. Their NIR colors are also consistent with young ($<$5 Myr) stellar populations and more than half of them are coincident with the MIR emission peaks. These younger, dusty star-forming regions account for $\sim$6$\%$ and $\sim$17$\%$ of the total 1.5$\mu$m and 4.4$\mu$m luminosity of the starburst ring, respectively. Thanks to JWST, we find a significant number of young dusty sources that were previously unseen due to dust extinction. The newly identified 28 young sources are a significant increase compared to the number of HST-detected young sources (4-5). This makes the total percentage of the young population rise from $\sim$15$\%$ to 48$\%$. Abstract

The nearby, luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) NGC 7469 hosts a Seyfert nucleus with a circumnuclear star-forming ring and is thus the ideal local laboratory for investigating the starburst--AGN connection in detail. We present integral-field observations of the central 1.3 kpc region in NGC 7469 obtained with the JWST Mid-InfraRed Instrument. Molecular and ionized gas distributions and kinematics at a resolution of {\sim}100 pc over the 4.9 - 7.6{\mu}m region are examined to study gas dynamics influenced by the central AGN. The low-ionization [Fe II] {\lambda}5.34{\mu}m and [Ar II] {\lambda}6.99{\mu}m lines are bright on the nucleus and in the starburst ring, as opposed to H2 S(5) {\lambda}6.91{\mu}m which is strongly peaked at the center and surrounding ISM. The high-ionization [Mg V] line is resolved and shows a broad, blueshifted component associated with the outflow. It has a nearly face-on geometry that is strongly peaked on the nucleus, where it reaches a maximum velocity of -650 km/s, and extends about 400 pc to the East. Regions of enhanced velocity dispersion in H2 and [Fe II] {\sim}180 pc from the AGN that also show high L(H2)/L(PAH) and L([Fe II])/L(Pf{\alpha}) ratios to the W and N of the nucleus pinpoint regions where the ionized outflow is depositing energy, via shocks, into the dense interstellar medium between the nucleus and the starburst ring. Abstract

James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) images of the luminous infrared (IR) galaxy VV 114 are presented. This redshift ~ 0.020 merger has a western component (VV 114W) rich in optical star clusters and an eastern component (VV 114E) hosting a luminous mid-IR nucleus hidden at UV and optical wavelengths by dust lanes. With MIRI, the VV 114E nucleus resolves primarily into bright NE and SW cores separated by 630 pc. This nucleus comprises 45% of the 15um light of VV 114, with the NE and SW cores having IR luminosities, L_ IR (8-1000um) ~ 8+/-0.8x10^10 L_sun and ~ 5+/-0.5x10^10 L_sun, respectively, and IR densities, Sigma_IR >~ 2+/-0.2x10^13 L_sun / kpc^2 and >~ 7+/-0.7x10^12 L_sun / kpc^2, respectively -- in the range of Sigma_IR for the Orion star-forming core and the nuclei of Arp 220. The NE core, previously speculated to have an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN), has starburst-like mid-IR colors. In contrast, the VV 114E SW has AGN-like colors. Approximately 40 star-forming knots with L_IR ~ 0.02-5x10^10 L_sun are identified, 25% of which have no optical counterpart. Finally, diffuse emission accounts for 40-60% of the mid-IR emission. Mostly notably, filamentary Poly-cyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission stochastically excited by UV and optical photons accounts for half of the 7.7um light of VV 114. Abstract

We have used the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to obtain the first spatially resolved, mid-infrared (mid-IR) images of IIZw096, a merging luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) at $z = 0.036$. Previous observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope suggested that the vast majority of the total IR luminosity (LIR) of the system originated from a small region outside of the two merging nuclei. New observations with JWST/MIRI now allow an accurate measurement of the location and luminosity density of the source that is responsible for the bulk of the IR emission. We estimate that 40-70% of the IR bolometric luminosity, or $3-5 \times 10^{11}\,{\rm{L_{\odot}}}$, arises from a source no larger than 175pc in radius, suggesting a luminosity density of at least $3-5 \times 10^{12} \, {\rm{L_{\odot} \, kpc^{-2}}}$. In addition, we detect 11 other star forming sources, five of which were previously unknown. The MIRI F1500W/F560W colors of most of these sources, including the source responsible for the bulk of the far-IR emission, are much redder than the nuclei of local LIRGs. 16. Health Education and Changing Stress Mindsets: The Moderating Role of Personality

Abstract

Background: While prior research has demonstrated the ability of individuals to change their stress mindsets, the mechanisms through which these changes occur have not been studied. We offer health education as one such mechanism. Additionally, we posit that personality may moderate the change of stress mindset over time for students who are enrolled in health education courses. Purpose: This study explores the role of personality in the change of stress mindset when there is a specific focus on improving individual health and well-being via health education courses. Methods: Data was collected at two times in the semester, from 423 college students who are participating in college health education courses. Results: Neuroticism, openness, and conscientiousness have cross-level moderating effects on the change of stress mindset over time when students were engaged in health education courses. However, extraversion and agreeableness do not. Discussion: This study highlights the importance of health education, for specific personality types, in changing students' mindsets as it relates to stress. Translation to Health Education Practice: By offering more evidence of the reach, scope, and benefits health education may provide, this study provides additional rationale for the inclusion and implementation of health education in academics.

18. I Paid for It, So I Deserve It! Examining Psycho-Educational Variables and Student Consumerist Attitudes to Higher Education

Abstract

There is a growing concern among educators and university administrators that the high cost of tuition fees has encouraged tertiary level students to adopt a "consumerist view" of tertiary education, where education is seen as a service-for-payment. Anecdotal evidence suggests that this belief may cause lecturers to compromise the academic rigour often associated with instructional design, delivery, and assessment, and may lead students to believe that they are entitled to certain academic privileges. Despite these concerns, there are few empirical studies which examine the prevalence of student consumerism and the factors that influence it. As such, the purpose of this study was twofold; it aimed to: (1) ascertain the level of student consumerism among a sample of university undergraduate students (n = 104) and (2) to determine whether any of the three specified psycho-educational variables (academic self-efficacy, academic locus of control, and intrinsic motivation) used in this study are significantly related to student consumerism among this sample. Questionnaires were administered to a sample of undergraduate students enrolled in a university in Barbados. The results revealed that student consumerist attitudes were above average. No significant relationships emerged between any of the psycho-educational variables and student consumerism. Recommendations for future research are advanced.

20. THEORIES OF PERFORMANCE: A REVIEW AND INTEGRATION.

Abstract

Performance is a critical construct across micro and macro management subfields (e.g., organizational behavior, entrepreneurship, strategic management). However, there is little consensus on how performance should be conceptualized. There are parallel and siloed research streams addressing firm- and individual-level performance, and a never-ending search for seemingly novel theories without satisfactory progress toward integrating them. To address these challenges, we systematically integrated performancerelated theories. We reviewed 15,535 journal articles published in 44 journals from 1946 to 2022 and uncovered 239 unique performance-related theories that we integrated through six meta-theoretical constructs: firm-level (1) capabilities, (2) structures, and (3) transactions; and individual-level (4) knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics, (5) roles, and (6) relationships. Moreover, we discovered that these metatheoretical constructs are isomorphic across levels, which resulted in the COREmodel of performance applicable at both levels of analysis: Performance (P) = Capacity (C) + Opportunity (O) + Relevant Exchanges (RE). We describe how the CORE performance modelwill enable researchers to stop working in theoretical silos, aiming for illusory theoretical contributions and thinking dichotomously about performance as processes or outcomes, and to start considering "the big picture" of performance, exploring the performance system, and considering howperformance processes affect performance outcomes (and vice versa). 21. Mid-Infrared Properties of Luminous Infrared Galaxies II: Probing the Dust and Gas Physics of the GOALS Sample

Abstract

The Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) is a comprehensive, multiwavelength study of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the local universe. Here we present the results of a multi-component, spectral decomposition analysis of the low resolution mid-IR Spitzer IRS spectra from 5-38um of 244 LIRG nuclei. The detailed fits and high quality spectra allow for characterization of the individual PAH features, warm molecular hydrogen emission, and optical depths for silicate dust grains and water ices. We find that starbursting LIRGs, which make up the majority of GOALS, are very consistent in their MIR properties (i.e. tau_9.7um, tau_ice, neon line and PAH feature ratios). However, as their PAH EQW decreases, usually an indicator of an increasingly dominant AGN, LIRGs cover a larger spread in these MIR parameters. The contribution from PAHs to the total L(IR) in LIRGs varies from 2-29% and LIRGs prior to their first encounter show higher L(PAH)/L(IR) ratios on average. We observe a correlation between the strength of the starburst (IR8) and the PAH fraction at 8um but not with the 7.7 to 11.3 PAH ratio, suggesting the fractional PDR emission, and not the overall grain properties, is associated with the rise in IR8 for galaxies off the starburst main sequence. We detect crystalline silicate features in 6% of the sample but only in the most obscured sources (s_9.7um < -1.24). Ice absorption features are observed in 11% (56%) of GOALS LIRGs (ULIRGs). Most GOALS LIRGs have L(H2)/L(PAH) ratios elevated above those observed for normal star-forming galaxies and exhibit a trend for increasing L(H2)/L(PAH) ratio with increasing L(H2). While star formation appears to be the dominant process responsible for exciting the H2 in most of the GOALS galaxies, a subset of LIRGs (10%) show excess H2 emission that is inconsistent with PDR models and may be excited by shocks or AGN-induced outflows., Comment: 21 pages with 20 figures plus 2 tables

23. Atomistic-to-Continuum Multiscale Modeling with Long-Range Electrostatic Interactions in Ionic Solids

Abstract

We present a multiscale atomistic-to-continuum method for ionic crystals with defects. Defects often play a central role in ionic and electronic solids, not only to limit reliability, but more importantly to enable the functionalities that make these materials of critical importance. Examples include solid electrolytes that conduct current through the motion of charged point defects, and complex oxide ferroelectrics that display multifunctionality through the motion of domain wall defects. Therefore, it is important to understand the structure of defects and their response to electrical and mechanical fields. A central hurdle, however, is that interactions in ionic solids include both short-range atomic interactions as well as long-range electrostatic interactions. Existing atomistic-to-continuum multi-scale methods, such as the Quasicontinuum method, are applicable only when the atomic interactions are short-range. In addition, empirical reductions of quantum mechanics to density functional models are unable to capture key phenomena of interest in these materials. To address this open problem, we develop a multiscale atomistic method to coarse-grain the long-range electrical interactions in ionic crystals with defects. In these settings, the charge density is rapidly varying, but in an almost-periodic manner. The key idea is to use the polarization density field as a multiscale mediator that enables efficient coarse-graining by exploiting the almost-periodic nature of the variation. In regions far from the defect, where the crystal is close-to-perfect, the polarization field serves as a proxy that enables us to avoid accounting for the details of the charge variation. We combine this approach for long-range electrostatics with the standard Quasicontinuum method for short-range interactions to achieve an efficient multiscale atomistic-to-continuum method.

24. Exploring the physical properties of local star-forming ULIRGs from the ultraviolet to the infrared

Abstract

We present an application of the da Cunha, Charlot & Elbaz (2008) model of the spectral energy distribution (SEDs) of galaxies from the ultraviolet to far-infrared to a small pilot sample of purely star-forming Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). We interpret the observed SEDs of 16 ULIRGs using this physically-motivated model which accounts for the emission of stellar populations from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared and for the attenuation by dust in two components: an optically-thick starburst component and the diffuse ISM. The infrared emission is computed by assuming that all the energy absorbed by dust in these components is re-radiated at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths. This model allows us to derive statistically physical properties including star formation rates, stellar masses, as well as temperatures and masses of different dust components and plausible star formation histories. We find that, although the ultraviolet to near-infrared emission represents only a small fraction of the total power radiated by ULIRGs, observations in this wavelength range are important to understand the properties of the stellar populations and dust attenuation in the diffuse ISM of these galaxies. Furthermore, our analysis indicates that the use of mid-infrared spectroscopy from the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope is crucial to obtain realistic estimates of the extinction to the central energy source, mainly via the depth of the 9.7-micron silicate feature, and thus accurately constrain the total energy balance. Our findings are consistent with the notion that, in the local Universe, the physical properties of ULIRGs are fundamentally different from those of galaxies with lower infrared luminosities and that local ULIRGs are the result of merger-induced starbursts. 27. Spitzer Observations of Powerful Radio Sources

Abstract

We have measured the mid-infrared radiation from an orientation-unbiased sample of powerful 3C RR galaxies and quasars using the IRS and MIPS instruments aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. We fit the Spitzer data as well as other measurements from the literature with synchrotron and dust components. At 15 microns, quasars are typically four times brighter than radio galaxies with the same isotropic radio power. Based on our fits, half of this difference can be attributed to the presence of non-thermal emission in the quasars but not the radio galaxies. Abstract

Increased computing power and greater access to online data have led to rapid growth in the use of computer-aided text analysis (CATA) and machine learning methods. Using "big data", researchers have not only advanced new streams of research, but also new research methodologies. Noting this trend and simultaneously recognizing the value of traditional research methods, we lay out a methodology that bridges the gap between old and new approaches to operationalize old constructs in new ways. With a combination of web scraping, CATA, and supervised machine learning, using labeled ground truth data (i.e., data with known inputs and outputs), we train a model to predict CIP (Charismatic-Ideological-Pragmatic) leadership styles from running text. To illustrate this method, we apply the model to classify U.S. state governors' COVID-19 press briefings according to their CIP leadership style.
