1. Recognition and residential childcare : a small scale study of the applicability of Honneth's conceptual framework

Abstract

The history of residential childcare is a chequered one, in which fundamental questions about the nature, purpose, quality and effectiveness of the service have been raised. Despite concerns, there is a commonly shared agreement that some residential childcare provision will always be necessary and that if it is good quality, it has the potential to help children achieve their potential and achieve positive long-term outcomes. This does then raise the question as to what is meant by 'good quality' or 'quality care'. Through interviews with key stakeholders including young people in care, this research study sets out to explore their understandings and experiences of quality care. The findings reveal that among the many factors that could contribute to quality care (including high quality facilities and a well-qualified staff group) a central theme was the quality of relationships between staff and young people. Using Honneth's conceptual framework regarding recognition and misrecognition, as an analytical tool, the thesis outlines how the residential child care could be enhanced by applying core concepts to the design and delivery of the service. It is argued that relationships would be enhanced and that the identity needs of young people in care would be recognised and upheld.

4. The Barriers and Facilitators to the Implementation of Interventions for Children with Visual Impairments, Their Parents/Guardians or Educators: A Systematic Scoping Review

Abstract

A body of research indicates the importance of interventions for promoting the development and progress of children with visual impairments. However, the research available on suitable interventions for this population is relatively sparse. The purpose of this review is to identify, collate and appraise the available research evidence on implementation barriers and facilitators of interventions for children with visual impairments, their parents/guardians or educators. A systematic scoping search of peer-reviewed literature (including grey literature) was conducted from 15 June 2016 to 7 August 2016 and 2 May 2019 to 5 May 2019. Initial searches identified 6802 papers with 15 meeting the inclusion criteria. Three additional articles were identified through hand searching giving a final total of 18 included studies. The methodological quality score of the studies was variable with 61% scored in the average quality range. Sensory strategies, a family-centred approach, in-service training and routines-based activities were identified as implementation facilitators. Barriers were a lack of adaptive equipment and training for parents and professionals, complicating factors associated with the child's disability and an absence of specialists in interventions. Effective intervention strategies differ for this targeted population which requires individualised applications associated with teacher and parent/guardian training. For health or education professionals who work with children with visual impairments, the outcomes of this review suggest that a detailed assessment and identification of the individualised needs of children and their families, coupled with carefully designed and tested support practices to meet their individualised needs as well as promoting integrated working between health and care services, can optimise the positive implications for future practice. Along with this, future consideration should be given to the identification of the needs of children with visual impairments and additional disabilities in order to facilitate the adjustment of intervention strategies for this group.

Abstract

Enabling young people in foster care to benefit from lasting supportive relationships is a priority - long-term foster care is intended to provide stable, continuous, caring relationships that last throughout childhood into adult life. However, many care leavers have highlighted the challenge of feeling isolated and having to navigate early adulthood without a strong social network . So while continuous relationships with caring adults matter to young people in care and are fundamental to securing better outcomes , we need a better understanding of how to achieve this.The Relationships that Last research project aimed to learn about effective foster care practice from formerly fostered adults who have maintained relationships with their foster family into adulthood. From a critical best practice approach , we aimed to identify the active ingredients of these lasting relationships, and what worked well to create the conditions in which they could thrive.In this brief research for practice report we outline key messages from the research, offer reflective prompts for social workers involved with looked after children or family placements, and make suggestions for foster care practice.

7. Developing Anti-Oppressive Social Work Practice through Reflexivity

Abstract

Not much has been written on the subject of reflexivity in social work practice. Taking a definition of reflexivity that encourages the inquirer to consider how various psycho-social positions and power-saturated social spheres have shaped individual meaning and narrative, this article outlines a reflexive model that can be applied by social workers to enhance their understanding and implementation of anti-oppressive practice. The model builds on earlier theoretical work and evaluation carried out by the lead author but updates it by including new theoretical insights from both authors. The conceptualisation centres on five imbricated and power-saturated domains of understanding: the domains of ‘psycho-biography’, ‘relationship’, ‘culture’, ‘organisations’ and ‘political-economy’. The relevance of the model for social work practice in the Republic of Ireland is further considered charting how oppression is manifested within each of the five domains. The article concludes with a consideration of how social workers can practically apply the model within their day-to-day work practice. Here, a reflexive process, starting with the elucidation of a critical incident, is suggested. It is contended that social workers within Ireland can enhance their perceptual awareness of discrimination and oppression by embracing the model noting how their own positionality may be a contributory factor in realising anti-oppressive interventions.

The article discusses a meeting of more than 70 members of the U.S. Coalition for Whole Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on July 12, 2012. Reportedly, the members met with HHS officials to discuss parity and health care reform. Among the concerns of the Coalition are additional guidance on health benefits, parity, and the expansion of Medicaid.
