Student employment is a common co‐curricular activity among undergraduate students. Previous studies have primarily focused on the impact of employment on academic outcomes and post‐graduation labor market success. Although there is an assumption that on‐campus student employment influences leadership learning, there is a lack of research directly exploring this topic. Strengths-based approaches to research with military-connected children (MCC) are sparse and their voices are rarely given the equivalent weight and influence compared to the voices of adults. Recreational camps can promote positive outcomes, and this paper draws on qualitative participatory methods exploring MCCs perceptions of a one-week recreational camp. It revealed three key interrelated themes about MCCs experience: (1) relationships; (2) age; and (3) organization and scheduling. In the context of recent controversies surrounding the censorship of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer online content, specifically on YouTube and Tumblr, we interrogate the relationship between normative understandings of sexual citizenship and the content classification regimes. We argue that these content classification systems and the platforms' responses to public criticism both operate as norm-producing technologies, in which the complexities of sexuality and desire are obscured in order to cultivate notions of a 'good' lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer sexual citizen. However, despite normative work of classification seeking to distinguish between sexuality and sex, we argue that the high-profile failures of these classification systems create the conditions for users to draw attention to, rather than firm, these messy boundaries. This article reflects on the concept of 'queer generations' as developed in the context of an ongoing study about belonging and sexual citizenship among two social generations of gender and sexual minority youth in Australia. We define the concepts 'queer' and 'generations' in the context of recent theoretical interest in temporality in childhood and youth studies in an attempt to think differently about gender and sexual difference. The main theoretical tension that lies at the heart of this article is how to take seriously the shared experience of growing up LGBT without insisting on a uniform narrative that is inherent to it. Drawing on an archival fragment from an HIV campaign produced in Australia and distributed in the 1990s and targeted at young gay and bisexual men, we consider the shifting conditions through which visibility has featured as a key problem for the deployment of sexual citizenship. This archival fragment is valuable because of the way that it problematizes the in/out, visible/invisible, gay/straight binaries that have dogged attempts to grapple with the at once individual and collective experience of growing up LGBT. This article argues that race and class are central aspects of sexual citizenship in a Australia. It does so by investigating representations of heterosexuality that were produced and circulated during the 2017 same-sex marriage postal survey. Engaging with feminist and critical race theorists, we position same-sex marriage as not exceptional but part of a wider distribution of sexual citizenship within Australia's ongoing settler colonial history. We do so by introducing a number of illustrative examples of representations of heterosexuality produced during the survey. These representations reveal how same-sex marriage perpetuated heterosexual authority by asserting claims to authenticity and the occupation of space. We observe how heterosexuality in the survey material reproduced fantasies linking these three themes, for example, in an authentic white heterosexual family who speaks from their suburban backyard. It reveals that ceding to a bifurcated view of either progressive or conservative voices forestalls rather than advances other visions which may exceed the limited imaginings of sexual citizenship offered by the white liberal settler colonial state. This article focuses on historical queer cultural geographies of masculinities and to do so it focuses on two cases/places. The first is an archival case/place: a partial assembly of documents of beats and their uses during and in the wake of Gay Liberation in Australia. The second is a literary case/place: Thomas Mann'sDeath in Venice, a canonical twentieth-century imbrication of male homosexuality and geography. This article will seek to rationalize the mobilization of these two asynchronous cases/places through the insights that both afford, when brought together, for elaborating contributions that queer readings of Nietzsche can make to contemporary queer theories of space, time and masculinities. The developmental pathways of regulatory T cells (Treg) generation in the thymus are not fully understood. In this study, we reconstituted thymic development of Zap70-deficient thymocytes with a tetracycline-inducible Zap70 transgene to allow temporal dissection of Treg development. We find that Treg develop with distinctive kinetics, first appearing by day 4 among CD4 single-positive (SP) thymocytes. Accepted models of CD25+Foxp3+ Treg selection suggest development via CD25+Foxp3- CD4 SP precursors. In contrast, our kinetic analysis revealed the presence of abundant CD25-Foxp3+ cells that are highly efficient at maturing to CD25+Foxp3+ cells in response to IL-2. CD25-Foxp3+ cells more closely resembled mature Treg both with respect to kinetics of development and avidity for self-peptide MHC. These population also exhibited distinct requirements for cytokines during their development. CD25-Foxp3+ cells were IL-15 dependent, whereas generation of CD25+Foxp3+ specifically required IL-2. Finally, we found that IL-2 and IL-15 arose from distinct sources in vivo. IL-15 was of stromal origin, whereas IL-2 was of exclusively from hemopoetic cells that depended on intact CD4 lineage development but not either Ag-experienced or NKT cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study investigated factors associated with voluntary and involuntary readmissions to forensic hospitals 356 insanity acquittees on conditional release in the state of Maryland from 2007, 2008, and 2009 and monitored their community progress for a 3-year follow-up period. The results indicated that voluntarily readmitted insanity acquittees had fewer reported arrests on conditional release and fewer reported instances of non-compliance with treatment compared with insanity acquittees who were returned involuntarily to hospital. As expected, arrests and treatment non-compliance predicted involuntary readmission. A third group of insanity acquittees who were not readmitted on conditional release presented with numerous differences compared with voluntarily and involuntarily readmitted acquittees. These included a longer duration in the community prior to any psychiatric readmission and fewer community psychiatric admissions than both the voluntary and involuntary groups. This article reflects on historical homophobia within educational practice and administration as an effort to consider how we might promote dialogue around the queer past of schooling. Along the way, it provides some discussion of the significance of archival knowledge in helping us to develop an understanding of the past while also providing resources for making sense of the contemporary moment. To develop my argument, I illustrate some examples of historical homophobia, through a brief discussion of some education administration practices in Australia, I then move on to briefly consider some of the implications of historical homophobia, and its effects in relation to educational research, practice and administration today. In the final section of the paper, I discuss some of the ways in which we might address the queer past of education through a cultural politics of queer reparation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article critiques the contemporary focus on same-sex attracted youth, “antihomophobia,” and “safe schools,” as well as the ways these foci structure the logics of the prevailing policy approach. The author examines how contemporary antihomophobic reform in education is sustained by a series of false dilemmas: that the political demands and investments of straights and nonstraights can be easily distinguished one from another; that the expression of homophobia is anathema to queer educative work; and that everything that is at stake in the messy confluence of sexuality, gender, and schooling can be made sense of by figuring the problem as a matter of being safe. Gesturing toward a queer social policy for schooling, this article critiques the “zero-tolerance” approach of antihomophobia education, arguing that it falsely bifurcates the social world of the school into homophobic/antihomophobic iterations, unsafe/safe versions, and straight/homosexual interests. Through an analysis of gay protest music (1975) and an educational kit for students (1978), both sponsored by the Campaign for Homosexual Equality in the UK, this paper brings into focus a history of gay rights activists' efforts to marshal popular culture in the development of informal sex education for young people in the second half of the 1970s. Through a reparative critique of prevailing therapeutic research methodologies, and through a theoretical deployment of notions of methodological reconciliation and queer breeding, it makes the case for the importance of historical methods in contemporary sex education research. Background The objective of this study was to investigate whether bladder filling with saline prior to trial of void ( TOV) was safe and whether it reduced time to discharge compared with standard TOV in the urology inpatient setting for patients post-transurethral resection of prostate, bladder neck incision or an admission with urinary retention. Methods Prospective, multicentre, randomized controlled trial at Hawkes Bay and Waikato hospitals with local ethics committee approval. All consecutive, consented patients requiring TOV were randomized into filling and control groups. The filling groups were filled with normal saline prior to TOV (up to 500 mL or first sensation of fullness). The control group had their catheter removed at 06.00 hours without filling. Time taken between catheter removal and discharge was recorded in minutes. Complications were recorded. Results Fifty-two patients were recruited and randomized with 27 and 25 patients in the filling and control groups, respectively. The mean time taken from catheter removal to discharge was 300.6 min in the filling group and 340.1 min in the control group. The filling group reduced the time to discharge by 39.5 min ( P = 0.304). Furthermore, 2/27 and 2/25 patients in the filling and control groups, respectively, developed urinary retention after TOV and required re-catheterization prior to discharge. Conclusion Bladder filling prior to TOV showed a non-statistically significant reduction in the time to discharge of 39.5 min. Despite the fact that bladder filling is a safe and cheap procedure, it cannot be recommended for use in an attempt to reduce time to discharge in an inpatient setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article examines the history of developments in concepts about sexuality and education in Victoria. It explores an interdisciplinary methodology to the teaching of sex and sexualities education which highlights the historical curriculum content and questions the shifts in sex and sexualities education since 1979. It utilizes the Foucauldian techniques of analysis to analyze the emergence of health or student wellbeing as the vital discursive form wherein sexuality is directed as the proper work of schools. It discusses the contemporary pedagogical practices in the field of Australian sexualities education which have arisen out of specific historical challenges in Australia for gay and lesbian human rights and for anti-homophobic schooling.

Background: The introduction of second generation sequencing technology has enabled the cost effective sequencing of genomes and the identification of large numbers of genes and gene promoters. However, the assembly of DNA sequences to create a representation of the complete genome sequence remains costly, especially for the larger and more complex plant genomes. Results: We have developed an online database, TAGdb, that enables researchers to identify paired read sequences that share identity with a submitted query sequence. These tags can be used to design oligonucleotide primers for the PCR amplification of the region in the target genome. Conclusions: The ability to produce large numbers of paired read genome tags using second generation sequencing provides a cost effective method for the identification of genes and promoters in large, complex or orphan species without the need for whole genome assembly. This article offers a joint reading of two cultural texts that reflect the contest over victim-oriented characterizations of queer youth in contemporary culture. The first text is a representation of queer youth taken from the popular UK television series Shameless (2004). The second text is an online discussion about representations of gay and lesbian characters on television that was recently posted on the Queer Youth Network website. Through my reading of these two texts, I explore the rise of explicit mainstream representations of gay and lesbian characters and the emergence of an identifiable queer youth audience as key characteristics of the contemporary 'after-queer' moment. Through a reflection on the queer youth analytical techniques observable on the Queer Youth Network site, I conclude by outlining some key implications for future educational research in the field of youth, sexuality and popular culture. Abstract: A combination of δ13C and δ18O analyses with U–Th disequilibrium dating on a stalagmite and groundwater from the deep and extensive Arch Cave network on northeastern Vancouver Island has produced a preliminary 12,200y paleoclimatic profile. Speleothem depositional rates vary from 6 to 41mm/ka and are consistent with the “Hendy” test for speleothem deposition under high-humidity equilibrium conditions. Relative to present day conditions, warmer periods are indicated at the end of the Younger Dryas, during the Holocene maximum, a possible Medieval Warming event, with the warmest period represented by a narrow peak at 8000y BP. Relatively cooler periods are recorded at 3500, 8200, 9300 and 11,500y BP with indications of minor cooling during the Little Ice Age and indications of relatively dry conditions during the earlier part of the Younger Dryas followed by warmer wetter conditions. The profile shows excellent agreement with other paleoclimatic indicators locally, most notably some partial speleothem records from Vancouver Island and Oregon, and some high-resolution global records such as the Greenland ice cores and speleothems from the Hulu Cave, China. Abstract: α-Methyltryptamine sulfonamides were identified as human glucocorticoid receptor (hGR) ligands in an ultra high throughput screening (UHTS) campaign. Described will be the hit-to-lead activities, including parallel and single point analog synthesis to map the scaffold. Ligands were identified that exhibited 30nM binding to hGR. Background Injection of local anaesthetic agents around the prostatic nerve bundles during transrectal ultrasonography ( TRUS) biopsy of the prostate has shown to reduce the pain associated with the procedure. It has been shown that some of the discomfort associated with the procedure is secondary to spasm of the anal sphincter. Topical diltiazem can relax the anal sphincter. Our aim was to evaluate the use of topical diltiazem cream as an adjunct to periprostatic nerve block in reducing pain associated with TRUS-guided prostatic biopsy. Method Between September 2009 and September 2010, 114 patients were enrolled in the trial (from two centres). Patients undergoing TRUS biopsy of prostate were randomized into diltiazem and placebo groups. Patients were asked to fill out a questionnaire at the end of the procedure. The questionnaire enquired about discomfort associated with various parts of the procedure using a 10-cm visual analogue scale ( VAS). Results For discomfort due to the presence of the probe, pain during the biopsy and overall pain prior to leaving the department, mean VAS was higher for the placebo group, but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion Diltiazem cream has a better side effect profile than glyceryl trinitrate cream and is better tolerated. Although we have demonstrated trends favouring diltiazem use as an adjunct to local anaesthetic in TRUS biopsy of the prostate, this did not reach a statistically significant level. The pain scores associated with TRUS biopsy in our cohort were lower than those in the published literature. This phenomenon might have contributed to the results observed in this trial. • Trauma team activations peak during leisure time: the summer months, October and December, on Sundays and after 16:00 hrs. • Major trauma patterns can be analysed within a Trauma Network to enable trauma service supply to match local demand. • Defining local patterns of major trauma enables optimised trauma prevention, service provision and training. It is only in recent years that major trauma systems and networks have been operating in the UK. High-quality data is available from the Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN) database, enabling regional analysis. Our aim was to analyse Trauma Team Activations within the Cheshire and Merseyside major trauma network and discuss the implications of these data on resource allocation, training and trauma prevention. A retrospective analysis was performed for all patients requiring Trauma Team Activation (TTA) at a category one adult Major Trauma Centre (MTC) who were submitted to the TARN database from the 1st January 2015 to the 1st January 2020. Data collected included the date and time of arrival, location of injury and Injury Severity Score (ISS) in addition to routine demographic data. Dates of major sporting events and school holidays were obtained. 4811 patients were identified. The median age was 57 years; 65.8 % were male. The mean frequency of TTAs was 18.5 per week. Patterns identified include annual peaks during the summer months, October and December, weekly peaks on Thursdays and Sundays and daily peaks between 16:00 and 23:59 with 45.0 % of TTAs occurring between these hours. There were 5.9 additional TTAs per week during the Isle of Man TT races. The median ISS increased from 14 to 23 for TT race TTAs and from 14 to 36 for Manx Grand Prix TTAs. Those injured during the TT races were twice as likely to require surgery and those injured during the MGP required five additional days in intensive care. School holidays did not independently affect major trauma volumes. Major trauma in Cheshire and Merseyside did follow distinct patterns according to calendar month, day and time. Major motorsport increased trauma volumes and severity; school holidays did not. Such analysis could enable Major Trauma Centres to tailor the supply of trauma services to meet a predictable local demand for the benefit of our staff and patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gold, present as electrum, in the Battle Gap, Ridge North-West, HW, and Price deposits at the Myra Falls mine, occurs in late veinlets cutting the earlier volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) lithologies. The ore mineral assemblage containing the electrum comprises dominantly galena, tennantite, bornite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and rarely stromeyerite, and is defined as an Au-Zn-Pb-As-Sb association. The gangue is comprised of barite, quartz, and minor feldspathic volcanogenic sedimentary rocks and clay, comprised predominantly of kaolinite with subordinate illite. The deposition of gold as electrum in the baritic upper portions of the sulphide lenses occurs at relatively shallow water depths beneath the sea floor. Primary, pseudosecondary, and secondary fluid inclusions, petrographically related to gold, show boiling fluid inclusion assemblages in the range of 123 to 173 °C, with compositions and eutectic melt temperatures consistent with seawater at approximately 3.2 wt % NaCl equivalent. The fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures are consistent with boiling seawater corresponding to water depths ranging from 15 to 125 m. Slightly more dilute brines corresponding to salinities of approximately 1 wt % NaCl indicate that there is input from very low-salinity brines, which could represent a transition from subaqueous VMS to epithermal-like conditions for precious metal enrichment, mixing with re-condensed vapor, or very low-salinity igneous fluids. The article presents a case study of a 54-year-old Maori male who was admitted to the Hawkes Bay Hospital who has huge pedunculated infection in the proximal medical of his right thigh, massive localized lymphoedema (MLL). It was found that the MLL existed for about five years and has grown over time. His patient also has a wound infection despite taking gentamicin, amoxicillin and metrodinazole.

Objective: It is increasingly recognized that patient safety requires heterogeneous insights from a range of stakeholders, yet incident reporting systems in health care still primarily rely on staff perspectives. This paper examines the potential of combining insights from patient complaints and staff incident reports for a more comprehensive understanding of the causes and severity of harm. Methods: Using five years of patient complaints and staff incident reporting data at a large multi-site hospital in London (in the United Kingdom), this study conducted retrospective patient-level data linkage to identify overlapping reports. Using a combination of quantitative coding and in-depth qualitative analysis, we then compared level of harm reported, identified descriptions of adjacent events missed by the other party and examined combined narratives of mutually identified events. Results: Incidents where complaints and incident reports overlapped (n = 446, reported in 7.6%' of all complaints and 0.6% of all incident reports) represented a small but critical area of investigation, with significantly higher rates of Serious Incidents and severe harm. Linked complaints described greater harm from safety incidents in 60% of cases, reported many surrounding safety events missed by staff (n = 582), and provided contesting stories of why problems occurred in 46% cases, and complementary accounts in 26% cases. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the value of using patient complaints to supplement, test, and challenge staff reports, including to provide greater insight on the many potential factors that may give rise to unsafe care. Accordingly, we propose that a more holistic analysis of critical safety incidents can be achieved through combining heterogeneous data from different viewpoints, such as through the integration of patient complaints and staff incident reporting data. The state‐of‐the‐art magnetic tunnel junction, a cornerstone of spintronic devices and circuits, uses a magnesium oxide tunnel barrier that provides a uniquely large tunnel magnetoresistance at room temperature. However, the wide bandgap and band alignment of magnesium oxide‐iron systems increases the resistance‐area product and creates variability and breakdown challenges. Here, the authors study using first principles narrower‐bandgap scandium nitride (ScN) transport properties in magnetoresistive junctions in comparison to magnesium oxide. The results show a high magnetoresistance in Fe/ScN/Fe via Δ1 and Δ2′ symmetry filtering with low wave function decay rates, suggesting scandium nitride could be a new barrier material for spintronic devices. NF-κB signalling plays an essential role in T cell activation and generation of regulatory and memory populations in vivo. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the role of NF-κB signalling in post-activation T cells using tissue specific ablation of inhibitor of kappa-B kinase 2 expression, an important component of the inhibitor of kappa-B kinase complex in canonical NF-κB signalling. The OX40 antigen is expressed on activated T cells. Therefore, we used previously described mouse strain expressing Cre recombinase from the endogenous OX40 locus. Ablation of IKK2 expression using OX40Cre mice resulted in the development of an inflammatory response in the skin epidermis causing wide spread skin lesions. The inflammatory response was characterised by extensive leukocytic infiltrate in skin tissue, hyperplasia of draining lymph nodes and widespread activation in the T cell compartment. Surprisingly, disease development did not depend on T cells but was rather associated with an unanticipated expression of Cre in skin epidermis, and activation of the T cell compartment did not require Ikbk2 deletion in T cells. Employment of Cre reporter strains revealed extensive Cre activity in skin epidermis. Therefore, development of skin lesions was rather more likely explained by deletion of Ikbk2 in skin keratinocytes in OX40Cre mice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Association mapping currently relies on the identification of genetic markers. Several technologies have been adopted for genetic marker analysis, with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) being the most popular where a reasonable quantity of genome sequence data are available. We describe several tools we have developed for the discovery, annotation, and visualization of molecular markers for association mapping. These include autoSNPdb for SNP discovery from assembled sequence data; TAGdb for the identification of gene specific paired read Illumina GAII data; CMap3D for the comparison of mapped genetic and physical markers; and BAC and Gene Annotator for the online annotation of genes and genomic sequences. Abstract: The Princeton Group is an assemblage of terrestrial volcanic and clastic sedimentary rocks in south-central British Columbia, and is part of the Challis–Kamloops belt that stretches from central British Columbia to the northwestern United States. The volcanic rocks were largely deposited as cinder cones and composite volcanoes, and are composed of basaltic andesite (olivine+clinopyroxene), andesite and dacite (hornblende+plagioclase+clinopyroxene), and rhyolite (biotite+quartz+K-feldspar), with calc–alkaline affinity. New 40Ar/39Ar dates on hornblende and groundmass separates, and whole rock indicate that magmatism took place during the Early to Middle Eocene, from 53–47 Ma. New neodymium isotopic measurements, in conjunction with previously published results, indicate that the Princeton Group has an ɛNd50 =1.2–6.4 and therefore represents primarily juvenile additions to the continental crust. The major and trace element abundances of Princeton Group rocks resemble those of many modern continental arcs. The compositions are notable, however, because they have an “adakitic” signature that extends throughout their entire compositional range, including high-Mg# basaltic andesite. Trace element modelling indicates that this signature was not derived from anatexis of normal oceanic crust, but from an “arc-like” source enriched in large-ion lithophile elements. This source may have been basaltic dykes that were emplaced into the lithospheric mantle during Mesozoic arc magmatism and subsequently partially melted during an event of lithospheric heating in the Eocene. Topics discussed include the hypothesis addressed in this work is whether the plant spongy mesophyll itself can provide a photonic substrate to enhance or augment plant-based photonics and light emission specifically; and this is a scientific question because the biocompatibility, particle adhesion, and mesophyll hydraulic function upon nanoparticle (NP) deposition are not known.
