3. The Road to Los Angeles: John Fante and the scene of writing

Abstract

Written in the first person, The Road to Los Angelesis a posthumous novel in which John Fante addresses the toposof literary vocation for the first time through Arturo Bandini, the hero of the saga. The novel's salient aspect concerns 17-year-old Arturo who, completely captivated by his heterogeneous readings, feels an irresistible desire to become like his favourite writers. Thus, he continually envisages the scene of writing that will lead to his literary glory. This overwhelming compulsion to write induces in him a deep-set attitude of rebellion against his Catholic family and society at large. Along with his literary ambition, Bandini is obsessed by an eroticism that stimulates the most perverted fantasies in him. This article argues that Arturo's combined worship of literature and women's bodies defines a hazy territory whose effects are paralysing for his juvenile, albeit authentic, talent. Tellingly, his first attempt to write a novel culminates in an absolute failure which makes him understand that the scene of writing in which he illusorily imagines himself has no real connection with the practical organization of day-to-day life required by creative writing. Hence his abrupt decision to leave behind his family, his work at the cannery and everything else and to move to Los Angeles.

Mario Praz: Voice Centre Stage is the first collection of essays in English on Italian writer Mario Praz (1896-1982), a central figure of twentieth-century culture and international literary relations. Praz's formidable oeuvre spanned six decades and covered such topics as comparative literature, interior design, history of art and culture, collecting, interart and intermedial studies, translation, journalism, travelling and autobiography. His colossal erudition encompassed an enthusiasm for the eccentric, the interstitial, the erotic and the macabre. This book, based on pluri- and interdisciplinary critical approaches by a variety of specialists, sheds ample light on an author who still awaits full appreciation as a unique cross-cultural ?voice inside the scene' of literature and art.

Abstract

This volume presents a collection of original and interconnected essays which aim to chart Elizabeth Gaskell’s literary imagination by focusing on diverse aspects of her short stories. It includes the papers read at the conference on «Elizabeth Gaskell and the art of the short story», organized by the Centre for Victorian and Edwardian Studies (CUSVE, «G. d’Annunzio» University, Pescara, 2010), to celebrate the bicentenary of her birth. While offering fresh insights into Gaskell’s shorter fiction, this collection provides an introduction to the many issues that absorbed her literary attention. Most importantly, by considering the growing significance of some neglected aspects of her works and the cultural and ideological context in which she lived, the contributions collectively delineate Gaskell’s artistic tensions, ethical sensibility and social commitment in a rapidly changing world. In their overall critical design, the contributors intend to shed light on the complex web of dialogic suggestions underlying her fiction, while at the same time revealing the extraordinary and multifaceted inventiveness of one of the most important Victorian writers.

Abstract

John Clare constructs his poetic identity by establishing a problematic relationship with the romantic tradition and by using his poetry as a destabilizing element of the literary canon through his idiosyncratic use of the English language. Although Clare is often represented as an epigone of Wordsworth, his poetic personality is very different from Wordsworth's and Coleridge's because he rejects the prioritization of the ego in his dialogue with the natural world, placing emphasis instead on the disharmony that characterizes nature. In this sense, above all in his mature works, Clare refutes the tradition that depicts the natural environment as a locus of harmonising beauty and serenity, to embrace a realistic conception, in which everything - including harmony - is always on the verge of dissolution. Thus, his green language has one of its privileged referents in ornithology precisely because birds are the metaphor of a precariousness that is connected, on a social level, with the precarious condition of peasantry. Confronted with the rapid transformation of the English countryside through the enclosure acts and the consequent end of communal life, Clare interprets reality with a disenchanted eye. His revision of romantic ecology therefore entails the definition of a new attitude marked by the shift from a euphoric anthropomorphism to a more realistic but no less poetic representation of nature. Francesco Marroni is an Italian literary critic and writer of fiction with a distinguished record as a scholar of Victorian and Edwardian Studies and further researching strengths in contemporary and comparative literature.
