Neotropical regions are responsible for harboring most of the global diversity of freshwater fish, providing essential ecosystem services for society. Human activities (e.g., land use changes) jeopardize aquatic ecosystems as well as species, communities, etc., impairing ecosystem services. We investigate the impact of human disturbance on the foraging ecology of Neotropical freshwater fishes across five Brazilian biomes by stable isotope analysis. We analyzed carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N) isotopic compositions of Neotropical fishes, sourced from the SIA-BRA dataset. Fishes were categorized into herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores. We tested the correlation between human disturbances, indicated by the human disturbance index (hdi), and changes in fish diets. We expected that the assimilation of C 4 ‑carbon from exotic forage would increase with higher disturbance levels, while δ 15 N levels would similarly rise due to nitrogen input from anthropogenic sources. We found increases in fish δ 13 C with human disturbance increases, suggesting greater assimilation of C 4 carbon in places where native vegetation was replaced by C 4 sources, confirmed by isotopic mixing models. In contrast, δ 15 N values did not show a significant relationship with human disturbance, probably due to the complex interactions and multiple sources of nitrogen in disturbed environments. Our finds suggest that stable isotope analysis provides a powerful tool for monitoring the effects of landscape changes on aquatic food webs. Particularly, the δ 13 C values of detritivorous fish that feed on C 4 plant detritus could serve as bioindicators of environmental degradation. Rapid coagulation of reptile blood often hinders its use in studies in remote and difficult-to-access areas, necessitating chemical preservation. Therefore, understanding the potential effects of anticoagulants on the isotopic compositions of blood is essential to avoid issues in interpreting the results for ecological studies. In this study we aimed to verify whether the storage time of the blood tissue in anticoagulants can influence its isotopic compositions of the broad-snouted caiman ( Caiman latirostris ), an ectothermic top predator from eastern South America. Blood samples were obtained from ten adult females of C. latirostris from a commercial breeding facility in 2015. Samples were stored in vials containing ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and sodium heparin (SH) and centrifuged after 2 and 8 h to separate red blood cells and plasma. No effect of time was found on the δ 13 C and δ 15 N of whole blood, plasma, and red blood cells in contact with the two types of anticoagulants, EDTA and SH. The findings have practical implications for researchers in this field, as they suggest that anticoagulants can be used effectively for at least eight hours under refrigeration.

Large predators have disproportionate effects on their underlying food webs. Thus, appropriately assigning trophic positions has important conservation implications both for the predators themselves and for their prey. Large-bodied predators are often referred to as apex predators, implying that they are many trophic levels above primary producers. However, theoretical considerations predict both higher and lower trophic position with increasing body size. Nitrogen stable isotope values (δ 15 N) are increasingly replacing stomach contents or behavioral observations to assess trophic position and it is often assumed that ontogenetic dietary shifts result in higher trophic positions. Intraspecific studies based on δ 15 N values found a positive relationship between size and inferred trophic position. Here, we use datasets of predatory vertebrate ectotherms (crocodilians, turtles, lizards and fishes) to show that, although there are positive intraspecific relationships between size and δ 15 N values, relationships between stomach-content-based trophic level (TP diet ) and size are undetectable or negative. As there is usually no single value for 15 N trophic discrimination factor (TDF) applicable to a predator species or its prey, estimates of trophic position based on δ 15 N in ectotherm vertebrates with large size ranges, may be inaccurate and biased. We urge a reconsideration of the sole use of δ 15 N values to assess trophic position and encourage the combined use of isotopes and stomach contents to assess diet and trophic level., (© 2024. Vulnerability processes and effects, albeit of great importance to cohesion and territorial policies, are nonetheless still underexplored and narrowly operationalized in scientific research. In particular, most assessments rely on economic indicators and a limited territorial scale, which do not have the same analytic potential of a broader view at a national level with regional/municipal similarities, specificities, and inter-connections. This gap also applies to health-related vulnerabilities, which, stemming from a lack of socioeconomic and environmental resources, has increased during and after the economic crisis of the past decade. This paper aims to analyze the health vulnerability phenomena in Portugal from a spatial perspective. Following a Multiple Correspondence Analysis, different territorial profiles of social vulnerability associated with the population health condition and access to and use of "health services" are identified. We conclude by outlining the importance of adding the spatial context to health policies addressing vulnerabilities and suggest avenues for future research.

Laser illuminated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) efficiently absorb light and heat up the surrounding medium, leading to versatile applications ranging from plasmonic catalysis to cancer photothermal therapy. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of the thermal, optical, and electron induced reaction pathways is required. Here, the electrophilic DNA nucleobase analog 5-Bromouracil (BrU) has been used as a model compound to study its decomposition in the vicinity of AuNPs illuminated with intense ns laser pulses under various conditions. The plasmonic response of the AuNPs and the concentration of BrU and resulting photoproducts have been tracked by ultraviolet and visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy as a function of the irradiation time. A kinetic model has been developed to determine the reaction rates of two parallel fragmentation pathways of BrU, and their dependency on laser fluence and adsorption on the AuNP have been evaluated. In addition, the size and the electric field enhancement of the decomposed AuNPs have been determined by atomic force microscopy and finite domain time difference calculations, respectively. A minor influence of the direct photoreaction and a strong effect of the heating of the AuNPs have been revealed. However, due to the size reduction of the irradiated AuNPs, a trade-off between laser fluence and plasmonic response of the AuNPs has been observed. Hence, the decomposition of the AuNPs might be limiting the achievable temperatures under irradiation with several laser pulses. These findings need to be considered for an efficient design of catalytic plasmonic systems.

Introduction: Dizziness is among the most common complaints in the elderly population., Objective: To determine the sociodemographic and clinical-functional profiles of institutionalized elderly people related to dizziness., Methods: Cross-sectional prospective study with institutionalized elderly people aged 60 or more years. A questionnaire on sociodemographic and clinical-functional characteristics was applied, and an anamnesis of occurrence of dizziness was held, as well as the Dizziness Handicap Inventory questionnaire., Results: 48.9% of the elderly subjects had dizziness. The mean numbers of diseases and medications associated with dizziness were, respectively, 4.5 diseases and 7.8 medications. We found a significant association between the occurrence of dizziness and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, sub-connective tissue and genitourinary system, as well as the use of medications for the musculoskeletal system. The scores for handicap degree in functional DHI were significantly higher among elderly subjects who needed walking aids, who had suffered falls, and those manifesting anxiety., Conclusion: Our sample included subjects of advanced age, primarily women, who were institutionalized less than five years, with multiple diseases and polypharmacy users. Objective: To describe and characterize local adverse effects (in the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx) associated with the use of inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) in patients with moderate or severe asthma., Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving a convenience sample of 200 asthma patients followed in the Department of Pharmaceutical Care of the Bahia State Asthma and Allergic Rhinitis Control Program Referral Center, located in the city of Salvador, Brazil. The patients were ≥ 18 years of age and had been using ICSs regularly for at least 6 months. Local adverse effects (irritation, pain, dry throat, throat clearing, hoarseness, reduced vocal intensity, loss of voice, sensation of thirst, cough during ICS use, altered sense of taste, and presence of oral candidiasis) were assessed using a 30-day recall questionnaire., Results: Of the 200 patients studied, 159 (79.5%) were women. The mean age was 50.7 ± 14.4 years. In this sample, 55 patients (27.5%) were using high doses of ICS, with a median treatment duration of 38 months. Regarding the symptoms, 163 patients (81.5%) reported at least one adverse effect, and 131 (65.5%) had a daily perception of at least one symptom. Vocal and pharyngeal symptoms were identified in 57 (28.5%) and 154 (77.0%) of the patients, respectively. The most commonly reported adverse effects were dry throat, throat clearing, sensation of thirst, and hoarseness., Conclusions: Self-reported adverse effects related to ICS use were common among the asthma patients evaluated here.

This article documents the addition of 153 microsatellite marker loci to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Brassica oleracea, Brycon amazonicus, Dimorphandra wilsonii, Eupallasella percnurus, Helleborus foetidus, Ipomoea purpurea, Phrynops geoffroanus, Prochilodus argenteus, Pyura sp., Sylvia atricapilla, Teratosphaeria suttonii, Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Trypanosoma brucei. Strategies to minimise intraspecific competition are common in wild animals. For example, individuals may exploit food resources at different levels of the food chain. Analyses of stable isotopes are particularly useful for confirming variations in an intraspecific niche because the chemical composition of animals tends to reflect both the food consumed and the habitats occupied by the species. However, studies using this methodology to investigate neotropical crocodilians are scarce. This study aimed to verify the existence of ontogenetic and sexual niche variation in broad-snouted caiman in a silvicultural landscape in Brazil through the use of carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes. The isotopic ratios of carbon and nitrogen were determined in claw samples collected from 24 juveniles, 8 adults, and 16 hatchlings of C. latirostris. We identified a discrete ontogenetic variation in the isotopic niche and sexual difference only for juveniles. These results may indicate differences in the exploitation resources and a consequent reduction in competition between age classes.
