Abstract

Classical statistics deals with determined and precise data analysis. But in reality, there are many cases where the information is not accurate and a degree of impreciseness, uncertainty, incompleteness, and vagueness is observed. In these situations, uncertainties can make classical statistics less accurate. That is where neutrosophic statistics steps in to improve accuracy in data analysis. In this article, we consider the Birnbaum-Saunders distribution (BSD) which is very flexible and practical for real world data modeling. By integrating the neutrosophic concept, we improve the BSD's ability to manage uncertainty effectively. In addition, we provide maximum likelihood parameter estimates. Subsequently, we illustrate the practical advantages of the neutrosophic model using two cases from the industrial and environmental fields. This paper emphasizes the significance of the neutrosophic BSD as a robust solution for modeling and analysing imprecise data, filling a crucial gap left by classical statistical methods., Comment: 20 pages, 24 figures

2. Bivariate binomial conditionals distributions with positive and negative correlations: A statistical study

Abstract

In this article, we discuss a bivariate distribution whose conditionals are univariate binomial distributions and the marginals are not binomial that exhibits negative correlation. Some useful structural properties of this distribution namely marginals, moments, generating functions, stochastic ordering are investigated. Simple proofs of negative correlation, marginal over-dispersion, distribution of sum and conditional given the sum are also derived. The distribution is shown to be a member of the multi-parameter exponential family and some natural but useful consequences are also outlined. The proposed distribution tends to a recently investigated conditional Poisson distribution studied by Ghosh et al. (2020). Finally, the distribution is fitted to two bivariate count data sets with an inherent negative correlation to illustrate its suitability., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Computer Science course instructors routinely have to create comprehensive test suites to assess programming assignments. The creation of such test suites is typically not trivial as it involves selecting a limited number of tests from a set of (semi-)randomly generated ones. Manual strategies for test selection do not scale when considering large testing inputs needed, for instance, for the assessment of algorithms exercises. To facilitate this process, we present TestSelector, a new framework for automatic selection of optimal test suites for student projects. The key advantage of TestSelector over existing approaches is that it is easily extensible with arbitrarily complex code coverage measures, not requiring these measures to be encoded into the logic of an exact constraint solver. We demonstrate the flexibility of TestSelector by extending it with support for a range of classical code coverage measures and using it to select test suites for a number of real-world algorithms projects, further showing that the selected test suites outperform randomly selected ones in finding bugs in students' code., Comment: 19 pages

8. Pandemic Life-lines: A Multimodal Autoethnography of COVID-19 Illness, Isolation, and Shared Immunities

Abstract

As a crosscutting concept in biology, anthropology, and philosophy, immunity has been a critical ‘site’ of debate on the relations between self and other, organism and environment, risk and responsibility, the corporeal and the political. In this Research Article, I trace how these relations and everyday life during the COVID-19 pandemic relied on a web of coordinated—and sometimes unexpected—lines of communication, restriction, and solidarity. Using an experimental approach that combines multimodal autoethnography and multiscalar relational analysis, I present a first-person account of travelling during, testing for, and falling ill and isolating with COVID-19 in late 2021. I explore how pandemic life-lines, including public health measures, vaccinations, devices, and helplines, as well as mundane gestures of care and ecologies of support, acted together as shared immunities. In this exploration, I propose to reconceptualise ‘immunity’ as a process network rather than a defence apparatus, shedding light on how these life-lines may influence differential trajectories of disease and healing. To conclude, I discuss how my conceptual and methodological approach contributes to a social ecological understanding of immunity, that goes beyond the biopolitical, in times of pandemic and in the future.

Abstract

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease which may appear in early life with structural abnormalities in lung tissues. We propose to detect these abnormalities using a texture classification approach. Our method is a cascade of two convolutional neural networks. The first network detects the presence of abnormal tissues. The second network identifies the type of the structural abnormalities: bronchiectasis, atelectasis or mucus plugging.We also propose a network computing pixel-wise heatmaps of abnormality presence learning only from the patch-wise annotations. Our database consists of CT scans of 194 subjects. We use 154 subjects to train our algorithms and the 40 remaining ones as a test set. We compare our method with random forest and a single neural network approach. The first network reaches an accuracy of 0,94 for disease detection, 0,18 higher than the random forest classifier and 0,37 higher than the single neural network. Our cascade approach yields a final class-averaged F1-score of 0,33, outperforming the baseline method and the single network by 0,10 and 0,12., Comment: SPIE - Medical Imaging 2018: Image Processing

Abstract

Renewable energy is a trending topic due to its importance in today's society especially because of global warming. Because of its importance, this topic should be discussed at schools in an inclusive education environment. Experimental work is a very good activity to provide students effective conceptual discussions, but it is necessary to improve the teaching--learning process for an inclusive education paradigm. In this paper we propose a low-cost experimental activity using Arduino that allows regular students and blind students to explore together and understand features and properties about solar energy and a photovoltaic panel, such as how the electric power generated by the photocell depends on the angle of incidence of solar light and the load resistance of the circuit.
