In this paper the gauge embedding procedure of dualization is reassessed through a deeper analysis of the mutual equivalence of vector field models of more generic forms, explicitly, a general modified massive gauge-breaking extension of electrodynamics and its dual gauge-invariant model we derive in the paper. General relations between the vector field propagators and interaction terms of these models are obtained. Further, these models are shown to be equivalent at tree-level and one-loop physical calculations. Finally, we discuss extension of this equivalence to all loop orders., Comment: 13 pages

We reassess an alternative CPT-odd electrodynamics obtained from a Palatini-like procedure. Starting from a more general situation, we analyze the physical consistency of the model for different values of the parameter introduced in the mass tensor. We show that there is a residual gauge-invariance in the model if the local transformation is taken to vary only in the direction of the Lorentz-breaking vector. This residual gauge-invariance can be extended to all models whose only source of gauge symmetry breaking is such a mass term.

We developed a method to characterize arbitrary superpositions of light orbital angular momentum (OAM) with high fidelity by using astigmatic tomography and machine learning processing. In order to define each superposition unequivocally, we combine two intensity measurements. The first one is the direct image of the input beam, which cannot distinguish between opposite OAM components. This ambiguity is removed by a second image obtained after astigmatic transformation of the input beam. Samples of these image pairs are used to train a convolution neural network and achieve high fidelity recognition of arbitrary OAM superpositions with dimension up to five.

Multi-level quantum systems loose coherence due to quantum jumps or spontaneous decay between their internal levels. Here we propose a way to simulate experimentally a three-level system under quantum jump using a three-mode photonic system. We simulated three different dynamics of spontaneous decay in a three-level atomic system: cascade decay, $\Lambda$ decay and $V$ decay. With an attenuated light coherent source at the photon level, we prepared a photonic qutrit state encoded in the parallel path of Gaussian modes. By exploring periodical phase modulation in spatial light modulator, the corresponding dynamical maps for quantum jumps were implemented in terms of the Kraus operator decomposition. With image measurements with an intensified charged-coupled device (ICCD) camera we obtain the diagonal elements of the initial state density matrix. Measuring the image and interference patterns of the evolved qutrit state we verified experimentally the variation of the populations and the decoherence effects caused by the quantum jumps in the three-level system for the three-level decay configurations.

Morphological classification is a key piece of information to define samples of galaxies aiming to study the large-scale structure of the universe. In essence, the challenge is to build up a robust methodology to perform a reliable morphological estimate from galaxy images. Here, we investigate how to substantially improve the galaxy classification within large datasets by mimicking human classification. We combine accurate visual classifications from the Galaxy Zoo project with machine and deep learning methodologies. We propose two distinct approaches for galaxy morphology: one based on non-parametric morphology and traditional machine learning algorithms; and another based on Deep Learning. To measure the input features for the traditional machine learning methodology, we have developed a system called CyMorph, with a novel non-parametric approach to study galaxy morphology. The main datasets employed comes from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS-DR7). We also discuss the class imbalance problem considering three classes. Performance of each model is mainly measured by Overall Accuracy (OA). A spectroscopic validation with astrophysical parameters is also provided for Decision Tree models to assess the quality of our morphological classification. In all of our samples, both Deep and Traditional Machine Learning approaches have over 94.5% OA to classify galaxies in two classes (elliptical and spiral). We compare our classification with state-of-the-art morphological classification from literature. Considering only two classes separation, we achieve 99% of overall accuracy in average when using our deep learning models, and 82% when using three classes. We provide a catalog with 670,560 galaxies containing our best results, including morphological metrics and classification., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures and 4 tables. Geometrical and topological phases play a fundamental role in quantum theory. Geometric phases have been proposed as a tool for implementing unitary gates for quantum computation. A fractional topological phase has been recently discovered for bipartite systems. The dimension of the Hilbert space determines the topological phase of entangled qudits under local unitary operations. Here we investigate fractional topological phases acquired by photonic entangled qudits. Photon pairs prepared as spatial qudits are operated inside a Sagnac interferometer and the two-photon interference pattern reveals the topological phase as fringes shifts when local operations are performed. We theoretically introduce and experimentally demonstrate the realization of a nonclassicality test that allows for arbitrarily low detection efficiency without invoking any extra assumptions as independence of the devices. Our test and its implementation is set in a prepare-and-measure scenario with an upper limit on the communication capacity of the channel through which the systems are communicated. The essence for our novel test is the use of two preparation and two measurement devices, which are randomly paired in each round. Our work opens up the possibility of experimental realizations of device independent protocols with current off-the-shelf technology.

We experimentally perform the simulation of open quantum dynamics in single-qudit systems. Using a spatial light modulator as a dissipative optical device, we implement dissipative-dynamical maps onto qudits encoded in the transverse momentum of spontaneous parametric down-converted photon pairs. We show a well-controlled technique to prepare entangled qudits states as well as to implement dissipative local measurements; the latter realize two specific dynamics: dephasing and amplitude damping. Our work represents a new analogy-dynamical experiment for simulating an open quantum system.

An experimental demonstration of two-qutrit state tomography via one-qutrit symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measure (SIC-POVM) is presented. A two-qutrit state is encoded in the transversal paths of a spontaneous parametric down-converted photon pair. A spatial light modulator allows to implement the necessary 81 POVM elements to reconstruct the state. The quality of the reconstruction is evaluated by comparing independent measurements with the predicted results calculated with the reconstructed state. We discuss the appearance of fractional topological phases on cyclic evolutions of entangled qudits encoded on photonic degrees of freedom. We show how the spatial correlations between photons generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion can be used to evidence the multiple topological phases acquired by entangled qudits and the role played by the Hilbert space dimension. We report an experimental implementation of the minimal Deutsch algorithm in an optical setting. In this version, a redundancy is removed from the most famous form of the algorithm. The original version involves manipulation of two qubits, while in its minimal version, only one qubit is used. Our qubit is encoded in the transversal spatial modes of a spontaneous parametric down-converted signal photon, with the aid of a double slit, with the idler photon playing a crucial role in creating a heralded single photon source. A spatial light modulator (SLM) is programmed to physically generate one-bit functions necessary to implement the algorithm's minimal version, which shows that the SLM can be used in future implementations of quantum protocols., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We study how to protect quantum information in quantum systems subjected to local dissipation. We show that combining the use of three-level systems, environment monitoring, and local feedback can fully and deterministically protect any available quantum information, including entanglement initially shared by different parties. These results can represent a gain in resources and/or distances in quantum communication protocols such as quantum repeaters and teleportation as well as time for quantum memories. Finally, we show that monitoring local environments physically implements the optimum singlet conversion protocol, essential for classical entanglement percolation.
