Abstract

In this study, we investigate surface strains related to seismic events and their relationship with pre- and post-seismic events in Latin America, by analyzing the variation of estimated earth coordinates supplied by a geodetic network called SIRGAS-CON. Based on data provided by the USGS for the period 2000-2011, and after the Global Congruency test, we selected four events associated with unstable geodetic network points. The resulting strains were estimated based on the finite element method using networks of points considered unstable connected to neighboring points using the Delaunay triangulation. It was possible to determine the strains along with the resulting guidelines for pre- and post-seismic, considering each triangular lattice formed for analysis as a homogeneous solid body. The calculation of strains and verification of the results allowed to analyze the interactions between lithospheric plates from the contraction and extension directions between points located in different plates. Despite the association between seismic events and the strain of geodetic network, some events of magnitude greater than 5.8 Mw were excluded because it does not show (provide) the surface strain, which is located at great depths. It was confirmed that events of greater magnitude provide increased surface strain rate when compared with other similar depths.

Il est difficile de prévoir quels délits seront commis dans le futur. Le phénomène criminel est un fait social qui concerne tous les aspects de la vie des êtres humains. La mondialisation augmente la complexité des connexions économiques, sociales et politiques. De nouveaux types de délits sont en train d'augmenter. La mégalopole est le plus souvent le théâtre de nombreuses scènes de délits. Toutefois, la socialité forcée et le creuset de cultures différentes pourraient être des causes de conflit permanent.Qu'est-ce que l'on peut considérer comme une déviance ou un délit dans une époque de changements sociaux rapides? Qu'est-ce que les chercheurs en sciences sociales pourraient faire pour comprendre de manière approfondie la réalité actuelle? Quel est le rôle du criminologue en tant qu'enseignant? Le criminologue doit utiliser une approche multidisciplinaire et interdisciplinaire afin de permettre aux chercheurs en sciences sociales de partager leur particuliers points de vue.Cet article mettra en évidence les différences entre l'enseignement de la criminologie et sa pratique opérationnelle en Italie dans le but de réfléchir sur les objectifs du Master en "Théories et méthodes d'investigation criminelle" (Sapienza Université de Rome). Ce Master répresente une façon d'enseigner des connaissances et de former des chercheurs en criminologie dans différents domaines.AbstractIs hard to predict the crime in the future. A criminal phenomenon is a social fact which concerns all aspects of human life. Globalization increases the complexity of economic, social and political connections. New patterns in crime are rising up. The Megalopolis is more and more often the background of many crime scenes. Therefore the forced sociality and melting pot of different cultures could be a cause of permanent conflict. What can be considered as Deviance and Crime in an era of fast social changes? What can social scientists do to understand more deeply the current reality? What about the role of criminologist as teacher? The criminologists has to use a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach in which social scientists can join to share the outputs of their particular points of view. Differences between Criminology teaching and practice in Italy will be highlighted to show the targets of "Sapienza" Master course in "Theories and methods in criminal investigation" as a way of providing knowledge to create Criminology scholars in different fields.

10. Investigation on the effects of different parameters on estimating orthometric and geoid heights

Abstract

The extensive use of GNSS positioning, combined with the importance of precise geoid heights for transformation between geodetic and orthometric heights, brings up the discussion of the influence of data uncertainties and the use of patameters on these estimates. In this sense, we first analyze the influence of the topographic density values and the data uncertainty on the computation of orthometric and geoid heights in 569 stations of the Brazilian Altimetric Network (stations whose values of geodetic and normal heights, gravity, and geopotential numbers are known), considering the Helmert and Mader methods. Second, we analyze the influence of different parameters (such as topographic density model, topographic models, geopotential models and Stokes kernel modifications) on the gravimetric geoid model determination through the remove-compute-restore technique, adopting the state of São Paulo, Brazil, as a study area. In the first analysis, the results indicate that orthometric heights are more sensitive to density values and to greater heights than to the Helmert and Mader methods applied. Also we verify that the normal and orthometric heights present significant differences for the analyzed stations, considering the high correlation between the heights, which provides small uncertainty values. In the second analysis, it was suggested that the Stokes kernel modification type and the Global Geopotential Model selection have a greater influence on the improvement of geoid models in the study area. However, the resolution of the Digital Terrain Models and the topographic density values have less impact on geoid models estimation., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

C’è una vulgata sulla “latitanza” della sintassi nello strutturalismo, in particolare europeo, e più ampiamente nei modelli europei di teoria linguistica che merita di essere vagliata nella sua attendibilità. Tra la fine dell’Ottocento e i primi del Novecento, soprattutto in ambiente germanofono, la sintassi venne infatti lungamente scrutata o avvistata come cruciale,a partire da più ambiti disciplinari, spesso fra loro irrelati e ben al di là dell’incipiente strutturalismo: dalla psicologia, dalla logica, dalla filosofia, dalla grammatica, tramille distinguo e un forte impegno di categorizzazione. Se l’obiettivo in Bühler è il monitoraggio del pensiero nel suo nascere, tra i praghesi l’intento è quello di osservare da vicino (modello del codice) le diverse risorse offerte da lingue diverse per l’organizzazione inequivoca e quanto più possibile libera dell’espressione, così come di monitorare (modello della comunicazione) l’esito compiuto dell’avvicendarsi dei pensieri nello scambio dialogico. Si lascia dunque narrare una progressione di indagini coltivate in più sedi, ma certamente spesso ambientate tra Vienna (Miklosich, Brentano, Bühler) e Praga (Marty, Zubaty, Mathesius, Funke, Carnap). Quasi si potrebbe illustrare, anche a proposito di sintassi, la sua semiosi ora propriamente simbolica di relazioni in re, ora più unilateralmente sintomatica, espressiva dell’Erlebnis dei parlanti – l’erlebte Rededi letteraria memoria, ad esempio – ora più intenzionalmente appellativa, quasi indice puntato alla volta dell’interlocutore. Quindi, sì, una semiotica della sintassi, inclusiva – ovviamente – di una semantica della stessa sintassi, che non ne teorizzi né l'estraneità alla lingua né l'autonomia dalle lingue

Abstract

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) remains the only curative option in MF. There is no consensus on the optimal conditioning regimen. We report outcomes of 187 patients with MF transplanted between 2010 and 2017 conditioned with TBF. Median age was 58 years. Median interval from diagnosis to allo-HCT was 44 months. Donors were haploidentical (41%), unrelated (36%) or HLA-identical siblings (23%). Stem cell source was PB in 60%. Conditioning was myeloablative in 48% of cases. Antithymocyte globulin (ATG) was used in 41% of patients. At 100 days, neutrophil and platelet engraftment were 91% and 63% after a median of 21 and 34 days, respectively. Grade II-IV and III-IV acute GVHD occurred in 24% and 12%, while at 3 years, all grade chronic GVHD and chronic extensive GVHD had been diagnosed in 38% and 11%. At 3 years, OS, RFS and GRFS were 55%, 49% and 43%, respectively. RI and NRM were 17% and 33%. On multivariate analysis, poor KPS and the use of unrelated donors were associated with worse GRFS and a higher grade II-IV acute GVHD, respectively. Neither donor type nor intensity of the conditioning regimen influenced survival outcomes. TBF is a feasible conditioning regimen in allo-HCT for MF in all donor settings although longer term outcomes are required.

Abstract

At present, several strategies for preventing neuromuscular pain in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) have been investigated. Recently, findings on genetic variants associated with adverse events to statin-based therapy have been reported. The study aimed at measuring whether Pharmacogenomics (PGx) profile can affect neuromuscular pain in patients carrying T2DM and cardiovascular diseases. An extensive panel of 5 polymorphisms on 4 candidate genes, previously validated as significant markers related to Sulphonylureas and Glitinides (SU-G) plus Simvastatin neuromuscular toxicity, is herein analyzed and discussed.We genotyped 76 T2DM patients carrying cardiovascular dyscrasia undergone anti-diabetic and anti-cholesterolemic polypharmacy. 35 subjects out of the total received concurrent SU-G and Statin-based therapy. Candidate variants consisted of drug transporters, such as Solute Carrier Organic 1B1 (SLCO1B1) Val174Ala ATP-binding cassette subfamily B member (ABCB1), subfamily C member 8 (ABCC8), and drug biotransformers of Cytochrome P450 Family (CYP) including CYP2C9*2 CYP2C9*3 CYP2C8*3, and CYP3A4*22. Moreover, we also focused on an early outline evaluation of the genotyping costs and benefits.6 out of 35 patients treated with SU-G plus statins (17.1% experienced adverse neuropathy events). Pharmacogenomics analysis showed a lack of any correlation between candidate gene polymorphisms and toxicity, except for the SLCO1B1 T521C allele; 14.3% of patients had a high risk for grade2 neuromuscular pain (Odds Ratio [OR] 2.61.95% CI 0.90-7.61, p=0.03).The clinical polymorphism effectiveness outlined therein will be assured by diagnostic improvements suitable for driving treatment decisions. In light of our experimental results and literature data, the analysis of the SLCO1B1 T521C variant will allow clinicians to take advantage from a better treatment planned for their patients in order to minimize neuromuscular pain and maximize benefits.

Abstract

Postural instability, in particular at gait initiation (GI), and resulting falls are a major determinant of poor quality of life in subjects with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Still, the contribution of the basal ganglia and dopamine on the feedforward postural control associated with this motor task is poorly known. In addition, the influence of anthropometric measures (AM) and initial stance condition on GI has never been consistently assessed. The biomechanical resultants of anticipatory postural adjustments contributing to GI [imbalance (IMB), unloading (UNL), and stepping phase) were studied in 26 unmedicated subjects with idiopathic PD and in 27 healthy subjects. A subset of 13 patients was analyzed under standardized medication conditions and the striatal dopaminergic innervation was studied in 22 patients using FP-CIT and SPECT. People with PD showed a significant reduction in center of pressure (CoP) displacement and velocity during the IMB phase, reduced first step length and velocity, and decreased velocity and acceleration of the center of mass (CoM) at toe off of the stance foot. All these measurements correlated with the dopaminergic innervation of the putamen and substantially improved with levodopa. These results were not influenced by anthropometric parameters or by the initial stance condition. In contrast, most of the measurements of the UNL phase were influenced by the foot placement and did not correlate with putaminal dopaminergic innervation. Our results suggest a significant role of dopamine and the putamen particularly in the elaboration of the IMB phase of anticipatory postural adjustments and in the execution of the first step. The basal ganglia circuitry may contribute to defining the optimal referent body configuration for a proper initiation of gait and possibly gait adaptation to the environment.

Abstract

Even with the availability of targeted drugs, allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) is the only therapy with curative potential for patients with CLL. Cure can be assessed by comparing long-term survival of patients to the matched general population. Using data from 2589 patients who received allo-HCT between 2000 and 2010, we used landmark analyses and methods from relative survival analysis to calculate excess mortality compared with an age-, sex- and calendar year-matched general population. Estimated event-free survival, overall survival and non-relapse mortality (NRM) 10 years after allo-HCT were 28% (95% confidence interval (CI), 25-31), 35% (95% CI, 32-38) and 40% (95% CI, 37-42), respectively. Patients who passed the 5-year landmark event-free survival (N=394) had a 79% probability (95% CI, 73-85) of surviving the subsequent 5 years without an event. Relapse and NRM contributed equally to treatment failure. Five-year mortality for 45- and 65-year-old reference patients who were event-free at the 5-year landmark was 8% and 47% compared with 3% and 14% in the matched general population, respectively. The prospect of long-term disease-free survival remains an argument to consider allo-HCT for young patients with high-risk CLL, and programs to understand and prevent late causes of failure for long-term survivors are warranted, especially for older patients.

Abstract

Microalgae production is receiving an increasing interest both by research institutions and commercial companies (Di Caprio et al., 2016). This is due to the growing consciousness of the need to move towards renewable, sustainable feedstoks for commodities production (Wang et al., 2012). However, process development at industrial scale, either based on open or closed photobioreactors, still is in a rather early stage and there is room for further development (Morweiser et al., 2010), especially aimed at reducing process costs. In this work an innovative low-cost technology for microalgae production, currently under development at Palermo University, is described. The main ways through which the goal of costs containment is pursued are (i) the adoption of thin walled transparent tubing for the photo bioreactor, and (ii) an evacuated-head air-lift system. To the aim of providing a proof-of-concept of these ideas, a 500-liter pilot plant was built. This is presently being operated in semi-continuous mode under solar irradiation and external climatic conditions.

Abstract

ObjectiveTo investigate the role of alcohol as a causal factor for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and whether its effects might vary according to the pathogenic mechanisms underlying cerebral bleeding.MethodsWe performed a case-control analysis, comparing a cohort of consecutive white patients with ICH aged 55 years and older with a group of age- and sex-matched stroke-free controls, enrolled in the setting of the Multicenter Study on Cerebral Haemorrhage in Italy (MUCH-Italy) between 2002 and 2014. Participants were dichotomized into excessive drinkers (>45 g of alcohol) and light to moderate drinkers or nondrinkers. To isolate the unconfounded effect of alcohol on ICH, we used causal directed acyclic graphs and the back-door criterion to select a minimal sufficient adjustment set(s) of variables for multivariable analyses. Analyses were performed on the whole group as well as separately for lobar and deep ICH.ResultsWe analyzed 3,173 patients (1,471 lobar ICH and 1,702 deep ICH) and 3,155 controls. After adjusting for the preselected variables in the minimal sufficient adjustments, heavy alcohol intake was associated with deep ICH risk (odds ratio [OR], 1.68; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.36–2.09) as well as with the overall risk of ICH (OR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.17–1.63), whereas no effect was found for lobar ICH (OR, 1.01; 95% CI, 0.77–1.32).ConclusionsIn white people aged 55 years and older, high alcohol intake might exert a causal effect on ICH, with a prominent role in the vascular pathologies underlying deep ICH.
