Abstract

The prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has increased in South Africa, emphasizing the importance of prevention strategies. This study used echocardiography to investigate the impact of Rooibos on cardiovascular function in those at risk of CVD. This research aims to contribute to understanding its effects on reducing cardiovascular risk factors. The study design involved a 12-week randomized, parallel, double-blinded, placebo-controlled dietary intervention trial using capsules containing standardized water-soluble extracts of green and traditional fermented Rooibos alongside a placebo control. Echocardiography was incorporated as a diagnostic imaging tool to assess cardiac function in the participant cohort. Aorta (AO) dimensions showed no significant change in any intervention group. Left atrium (LA) reduced in size from 3.832 ± 0.071 cm to 3.675 ± 0.067 cm (P = 0.01). There was no significant change in LA/AO ratio in any intervention group. Interventricular septum diameter in the placebo group decreased from 1.334 ± 0.030 cm to 1.250 ± 0.025 cm (P = 0.002), with no significance in fermented Rooibos, while green Rooibos resulted in a decrease from 1.282 ± 0.036 cm to 1.186 ± 0.029 cm (P = 0.002). Left ventricle posterior wall (LVPW) showed no significant changes in any of the intervention group. The left ventricle mass in the placebo and green Rooibos groups demonstrated no significance changes, while fermented Rooibos caused a decrease from 204.102 ± 7.102 g to 191.394 ± 6.707 g (P = 0.015). The phytochemical bioactive components, such as the polyphenolic antioxidants present in green and fermented Rooibos, improved cardiovascular function. This study confirms the effectiveness of echocardiography as imaging tool for assessing cardiac function in this particular population. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of dietary fish oil (FO) and rooibos supplementation on semen quality, fatty acids composition and reproductive performance of aged male broiler breeders. Seventy‐two 47‐week‐old Ross broiler breeder roosters were randomly assigned to a 2 × 3 factorial arrangements to include two FO concentrations (0% and 2%) and 3 rooibos concentrations (0%, 1.5% and 3%) for 13 weeks consecutive. The different diets affected semen parameters significantly (p < 0.05), except for the semen concentration and abnormality of the sperm. The sperm of the FO and 3% rooibos‐treated group showed better motility and viability when compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). The susceptibility of semen to lipid peroxidation was increased in roosters fed the rooibos‐free diets (p < 0.05), but it was reduced (p < 0.05) when the diet was supplemented with 1.5% and 3% rooibos. In addition, at 64 weeks, the highest concentration of testosterone was observed in the roosters fed a diet that included 2% FO and 3% rooibos (p < 0.05); however, the difference in testosterone levels between Week 52 and Week 64 was not significant (p > 0.05). The fertility rate of collected eggs from the FO and 3% rooibos group was higher (p < 0.05) than that of the other groups at the end of the experiment. In conclusion, dietary inclusion of FO along with rooibos improved seminal quality and reproduction performance in aged roosters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

49. Rooibos Aspalathus linearis – Can it reduce the incidence and severity of acute mountain sickness? A case study of Aconcagua (6962 m) climbing expedition, Argentina

Abstract

Sport and leisure activities at altitude, including climbing, trekking and various snow sports, continue to grow in popularity. However, the increase of high altitude activities is associated with hypoxia and its consequences, namely acute mountain sickness (AMS), which can manifest in two life-threatening conditions, namely high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high altitude cerebral edema (HACE). The most common methods for dealing with the potential onset of AMS involve acclimatization strategies, such as ascending 500m or less a day, and ingesting prescribed prophylactic medication, which can have adverse side effects. The study focuses on the efficacy of the fynbos plant rooibos Aspalathus linearis to reduce and/or prevent AMS. Rooibos is a unique South African herbal product usually consumed as a tea and a dietary source of unique bio-active antioxidants. A case study was conducted involving eight climbers (mean age: 46.6± 11.2 years) who supplemented their diet with rooibos in capsule form containing ~ 400mg rooibos extract (standardized to include 130mg total polyphenols/capsule) taken 3 times per day during the ascent of Aconcagua (6962 m) in Argentina. The dosage is equivalent to about 6 cups of rooibos tea per day. Daily resting mean heart rate increased from 62 to 87 beats per minutes (bpm) and mean peripheral blood oxygen saturations levels declined from 98% to 79% SpO2. The Lake Louise (LLS) assessment reported negligible symptoms of AMS for seven climbers up to, and at 6000 m. It is tentatively asserted that the findings indicate the potential of the rooibos plant Aspalathus linearis to reduce the symptoms and/or onset of AMS for those persons ascending to high altitudes, whether for sport, leisure or for work.Keywords: Hypoxia, acute mountain sickness (AMS), Rooibos.
