Thirteen new species of Myrtaceae from Colombia are described and illustrated; information about the habitats in which these species are growing, the evaluation of its conservation status, and its affinities are included. Besides, five new records of native and introduced Myrtaceae are reported for Colombia. Also, a new combination of a Myrtaceae species previously described as Calycorectes is proposed here under the genus Eugenia.

Myrtaceae is one of the largest families in number of species within the order Myrtales and one of the richest families in Brazil. Myrcia is the fourth largest genus of Myrtaceae, with approximately 770 species distributed from Central America and the Caribbean to southern South America. In Brazil Myrcia is represented by 397 species, of which 309 are endemic. In this study, we present the taxonomic treatment for all species of Myrcia that occur in Paraná state, Brazil. Analyses of herbarium specimens, online databases, and bibliography were performed. Fifty-three species of Myrcia occur in Paraná, distributed in all vegetation types. Twenty-three names were excluded from previous lists of species or listed as doubtful species. Neither of the recorded species is endemic to Paraná, but this state is the southern and northern limit of distribution of six and two species, respectively. We present an identification key, taxonomic descriptions, figures, maps, and comments on phenology, habitat, and morphology for each species.

A new species, Myrcia suberosa, is here proposed based in an ongoing taxonomic revision of Myrcia sect. Eugeniopsis, a group nearly endemic to the Atlantic Forest. Myrcia suberosa occurs in Brazil from Southern Bahia to Southern Rio de Janeiro states, but only three collections are known and the real distribution of the species is barely known. The new species is morphologically related to Myrcia pseudomarlierea and Myrcia teuscheriana, differing by sexual system, cork thickness, indument, and leaf and flower morphologies. Morphological description, images and conservation status are provided, as well as discussion about distribution, habitat, phenology and taxonomy.

Recent phylogenetic and taxonomic studies resulted in the synonymization of Marlierea into Myrcia. This paper aims to transfer the last Marlierea species to their correct genera, which include not only taxa belonging to Myrcia, but also to Eugenia, Plinia and Siphoneugena. Five new combinations are proposed: Eugenia choriophylla, based on Marlierea choriophylla; Myrcia resupinata, based on Myrtus resupinata; Plinia parvifolia, based on Marlierea parvifolia; Plinia sessiliflora, based on Marlierea sessiliflora; and Siphoneugena martinellii, based on Marlierea martinellii. Two new names are proposed: Myrcia rufopilosa, replacing Myrtus rufa; and Myrcia sintenisiana, replacing Marlierea sintenisii. A new synonym is proposed, Marlierea cordata under Eugenia hirta. Three names, Marlierea capitata, Marlierea involucrata and Marlierea occhionii remain as incertae saedis, and, additionally, we have listed two nomina nuda referenced in the literature as Marlierea.

Rubachia has usually been synonymized within Marlierea, which in turn is now considered to be a synonym of Myrcia (the only genus of the Myrcia group). However, the type of Rubachia is a species now placed in Plinia (Plinia spiciflora), making Rubachia a synonym of Plinia (part of the Plinia group), a fact that has been largely overlooked. The taxonomic status of Rubachia is here clarified.

After extensive molecular (Staggemeier et al. 2015; Santos et al. 2017; Wilson et al. 2016) and revisionary (e.g. Lima et al. 2018; Lourenço et al. 2018) work to maintain a manageable and monophyletic genus, Myrcia De Candolle (1827: 406) currently includes the previously recognized genera Calyptranthes Swartz (1788: 79), Gomidesia O.Berg (1855: 5) and Marlierea Cambessèdes (1832–1833: 373) (see Lucas et al. 2018). The majority of Calyptranthes species are now considered part of Myrcia sect. Calyptranthes (Sw.) A.R.Lourenço & E.Lucas (in Lucas et al. 2018: 3). As a result, Lourenço et al. (2018) recently transferred the continental species of Calyptranthes to Myrcia. Among these new names, two were subsequently found to be illegitimate and are herein corrected. The remaining species of Calyptranthes, mostly from the islands of the Caribbean, were transferred by Campbell et al. (2019).

An annotated conspectus of 124 species is presented for Myrcia DC. sect. Aulomyrcia (O. Berg) Griseb. This list is published for use as a basis for future revisionary work and presents the species of this evolutionary group together for the first time. Publication and type information, habitat and distribution, preliminary conservation assessments, and diagnostic notes are provided for each species. Background and Aims Myrcia section Aulomyrcia includes ∼120 species that are endemic to the Neotropics and disjunctly distributed in the moist Amazon and Atlantic coastal forests of Brazil. This paper presents the first comprehensive phylogenetic study of this group and this phylogeny is used as a basis to evaluate recent classification systems and to test alternative hypotheses associated with the history of this clade. Methods Fifty-three taxa were sampled out of the 120 species currently recognized, plus 40 outgroup taxa, for one nuclear marker (ribosomal internal transcribed spacer) and four plastid markers (psbA-trnH, trnL-trnF, trnQ-rpS16 and ndhF). The relationships were reconstructed based on Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses. Additionally, a likelihood approach, ‘geographic state speciation and extinction’, was used to estimate region- dependent rates of speciation, extinction and dispersal, comparing historically climatic stable areas (refugia) and unstable areas. Key Results Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inferences indicate that Myrcia and Marlierea are polyphyletic, and the internal groupings recovered are characterized by combinations of morphological characters. Phylogenetic relationships support a link between Amazonian and north-eastern species and between north-eastern and south-eastern species. Lower extinction rates within glacial refugia suggest that these areas were important in maintaining diversity in the Atlantic forest biodiversity hotspot. Conclusions This study provides a robust phylogenetic framework to address important ecological questions for Myrcia s.l. within an evolutionary context, and supports the need to unite taxonomically the two traditional genera Myrcia and Marlierea in an expanded Myrcia s.l. Furthermore, this study offers valuable insights into the diversification of plant species in the highly impacted Atlantic forest of South America; evidence is presented that the lowest extinction rates are found inside refugia and that range expansion from unstable areas contributes to the highest levels of plant diversity in the Bahian refugium.

Myrtaceae is one of the most diverse Neotropical groups and it therefore a good proxy of plant diversity in the region. However, biogeographic studies on Neotropical Myrtaceae are still very limited. Myrcia s.l. is an informal group comprising three accepted genera (Calyptranthes, Marlierea and Myrcia) making up the second largest Neotropical group of Myrtaceae, totalling about 700 species distributed in nine subgroups. Exclusively Neotropical, the group occurs along the whole of the Neotropics with diversity centres in the Caribbean, the Guiana Highlands and the central-eastern Brazil. This study aims to identify the time and place of divergence of Myrcia s.l. lineages, to examine the correlation in light of geological and climatic events in the Neotropics, and to explore relationships among Neotropical biogeographic areas. A dated phylogenetic hypothesis was produced using BEAST and calibrated by placing Paleomyrtinaea princetonensis (56 Ma) at the root of the tree; biogeographic analysis used the DEC model with dispersal probabilities between areas based on distance and floristic affinities. Myrcia s.l. originated in the Montane Atlantic Forest between the end of Eocene and early Miocene and this region acted as a secondary cradle for several lineages during the evolution of this group. The Caribbean region was important in the diversification of the Calyptranthes Glade while the Guayana shield appears as ancestral area for an older subgroup of Myrcia s.l. The Amazon Forest has relatively low diversity of Myrcia s.l. species but appears to have been important in the initial biogeographic history of old lineages. Lowland Atlantic Forest has high species diversity but species rich lineages did not originate in the area. Diversification of most subgroups of Myrcia s.l. occurred throughout the Miocene, as reported for other Neotropical taxa. During the Miocene, geological events may have influenced the evolution of the Caribbean and Amazon forest lineages, but other regions were geological stable and climate changes were the most likely drivers of diversification. Phylogenetic relationships of Myrcia s.l., the most species-rich tree genus in the Brazilian cerrado and Atlantic forests, are reconstructed by analysis, with parsimony and Bayesian inference, of four plastid regions (psbA-trnH intergenic spacer, trnL intron, trnL-F intergenic spacer, and matK exon) and the external and internal transcribed spacer regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA. The resulting phylogenetic hypothesis is evaluated in conjunction with key morphological characters and abiotic factors suggested to have influenced the group's current distribution. Some lineages identified by previous classifications are supported; others with morphological and/or ecological correspondence are recognized for the first time. Sequence divergence levels provide good resolution of relationships within but not between the main clades of Myrcia s.l. The previously recognized genera Calyptranthes and Gomidesia are shown to be monophyletic, whereas Marlierea is shown not to be; all are nested within paraphyletic Myrcia. A new subgeneric classification is required. An interpretation of the origins of Myrcia s.l. and potential causes of speciation in the group is made on the basis of recently published data and accepted geological events. © 2011 by The University of Chicago. Myrcia contains nearly 800 species and is divided into nine sections, one of them, Myrcia sect. Sympodiomyrcia , has recently been recognized and formally described. This study presents a taxonomic monograph of the group and revises its literature and taxonomic history. Myrcia sect. Sympodiomyrcia is mainly characterized by the presence of cataphylls at the base of internodes, sympodial branching at the base of inflorescences and free and deciduous calyx lobes. Myrcia sect. Sympodiomyrcia is distributed between the Guiana Shield and the central-eastern portion of Brazil (Atlantic Forest and Cerrado Domains). Morphological characterization of organs and structures is provided, as well as distribution statements, morphological differences with other sections of Myrcia and an identification key. A full taxonomic treatment as well as conservation status and images of representative specimens of each species are provided. Twenty one species are here accepted in Myrcia sect. Sympodiomyrcia : Myrcia ascendens , M. attenuata , M. bicarinata , M. bicolor , M. cataphyllata , M. costeira , M. densa , M. foveolata , M. insigniflora , M. lenheirensis , M. mucugensis , M. mutabilis , M. nitida , M. plusiantha , M. rupestris , M. subavenia , M. subcordata , M. subterminalis , M. summa , M. tenuifolia and M. truncata .

Siphoneugena Berg (Myrtaceae, Myrteae) is a small eugenioid genus with eight species ranging from Puerto Rico to Northern Argentina with the centre of diversity in Southeastern Brazil. Keys to the species and varieties are provided, as well as synonyms, descriptions, illustrations and a map of geographical occurrence. Two new taxa are described from Brazil: Siphoneugena guilfoyleiana C. Proença, the only species to occur in sandy maritime vegetation on the Ilha do Cardoso, state of São Paulo and S. densiflora Berg var. cipoensis C. Proença, an endemic of the Serra do Cipó mountain range in the state of Minas Gerais. A new combination S. dussii (Krug & Urban) C. Proença based on Marlierea dussii, is made for a species that grows in Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam and the West Indies. This study confirms current opinions as to the low taxonomic value of open versus closed calyces in establishing natural genera within the Myrtaceae.Revisão de Siphoneugena BergSiphoneugena Berg (Myrtaceae, Myrteae) é um pequeno gênero eugenióide que se distribuide Porto Rico ao Norte da Argentina com centro de diversidade no Sudeste do Brasil. Este trabalho confirma o baixo valor taxonômico da forma de antese (botões florais fechados ou abertos) na delimitação de gêneros naturais em Myrtaceae.

RESUMO O presente trabalho visa a identificação e caracterização das espécies de Myrtaceae ocorrentes nos campos de altitude do Parque Nacional do Caparaó, localizado na divisa dos estados de Minas Gerais e Espírito Santo, sendo sua vegetação formada por florestas e campos de altitude. Apresenta em geral altitudes em torno de 2.000 m, sendo seu ponto culminante o Pico da Bandeira, com 2.890 metros, representando o ponto de maior altitude da Região Sudeste. Myrtaceae está representada na área por 10 espécies, pertencentes a seis gêneros: Blepharocalyx salicifolius, Gomidesia affinis, Gomidesia clausseniana, Marlierea angustifolia, Myrceugenia alpigena, Myrceugenia ovata, Myrcia obovata, Myrcia subcordata, Myrcia venulosa e Pimenta pseudocaryophyllus.

O estudo de Marlierea Cambess. na Amazônia Brasileira tem como principal objetivo atualizar os dados sobre a morfologia e taxonomia das espécies da região, bem como fornecer subsídios para esclarecer a separação de Marlierea de Myrcia DC. ex Guill., conforme sugerem alguns autores. Na Amazônia Brasileira, Marlierea está representada por 11 espécies (Marlierea bipennis (O. Berg) McVaugh, M. caudata McVaugh, M. ensiformis McVaugh, M. ferruginea (Poir.) McVaugh, M. mcvaughii B. Holst, M. scytophylla Diels, M. spruceana O. Berg, M. subulata McVaugh, M. summa McVaugh, M. umbraticola (Kunth) O. Berg e M. velutina McVaugh) e uma mal conhecida (M. obumbrans (O. Berg) Nied.), habitando principalmente áreas de formações florestais. O gênero se caracteriza pelo hábito arbóreo ou arbustivo; folhas opostas (exceto em M. velutina que pode apresentar folhas opostas e/ou alternas); as inflorescências em panículas (de fascículos), racemos, cimeiras ou dicásios; botões florais geralmente fechados, abertura irregular do cálice, em 4-5 lobos, pétalas freqüentemente ausentes. Os Estados do Amazonas e Pará representam os dois principais centros de distribuição dessas espécies, sendo M. spruceana e M. umbraticola as espécies mais comuns. Marlierea obumbrans será melhor estudada posteriormente, devido apresentar sua delimitação taxonômica confusa entre Myrcia e Marlierea.A morphological study of Marlierea Cambess. occurring in Amazonian Brazil was carried out in order to obtain a better understanding of the morphology and taxonomy of all species in the region and to provide data to elucidate the taxonomic segregation of Marlierea from the morphologically similar Myrcia DC. ex Guill. In Amazonian Brazil, Marlierea is represented by 11, primarily forest, species (Marlierea bipennis (O. Berg) McVaugh, M. caudata McVaugh, M. ensiformis McVaugh, M. ferruginea (Poir.) McVaugh, M. mcvaughii B. Holst, M. scytophylla Diels, M. spruceana O. Berg, M. subulata McVaugh, M. summa McVaugh, M. umbraticola (Kunth) O. Berg, and M. velutina McVaugh). The taxonomically problematic M. obumbrans (O. Berg) Nied. is discussed as a badly known species. The species are trees or shrubs with opposite leaves (sometimes alternate in M. velutina); inflorescences racemose or paniculate (in panicles, cymes, or dichasiums), sometimes in fasicles; flower buds generally closed; calyx lobes 4-5, opening irregularly; and petals frequently absent. The states of Amazonas and Pará are the most species-rich. Marlierea spruceana and M. umbraticola are the most common species. Additional studies of M. obumbrans, morphologically intermediate between Marlierea and Myrcia, will be untaken in the future in order to establish the correct taxonomic placement of this enigmatic species.

A phylogenetic study of selected fleshy-fruited genera of the Myrtaceae was conducted using sequences from the ITS region of nuclear DNA and the psbA-trnH region of plastid DNA. Studies to date have suggested that the fleshy-fruited state has arisen on several occasions in the Myrtaceae. The previously accepted and predominantly Neotropical tribe Myrteae has traditionally been divided into three groups, the subtribes Myrtinae, Eugeniinae and Myrciinae. This subtribal arrangement is analysed in detail here for the first time. The monophyly of the tribe and subtribes are tested and relationships of the genera within them, in particular those of the Myrciinae and anomalous genera sometimes associated with it, are discussed. Combined analyses of these two DNA regions revealed 40 shortest trees, all of which resolve Myrteae (excluding the Acmena group) as monophyletic. Myrciinae appears to be monophyletic whereas Myrtinae and Eugeniinae appear polyphyletic. The phylogenetic positions and relationships of the anomalous genera Myrceugenia,Luma and Blepharocalyx are unclear, but Myrceugenia is never included within the Myrciinae s.str. A Myrciinae s.str. clade emerges within which Myrcia,Calyptranthes and Marlierea appear polyphyletic. Clades emerge, however, that may reflect some natural groupings within the subtribe.

Essential oils from Marlierea eugeniopsoides, M. obscura, M. tomentosa and M. silvatica, collected in southern Brazil, were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Fifty-two compounds were identified representing 84–97% of the oil contents. The oil from M. eugeniopsoides was rich in monoterpenes (56.1%), mainly those from the p-menthane series, with terpinolene (30.5%) and p-cymene (7.3%) being the most abundant. The other species were characterized by sesquiterpenes, mainly those from the caryophyllane and germacrane cyclization pathways. Marlierea tomentosa and M. silvatica oils were quite similar, with predominance of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, such as β-caryophyllene (22.5% and 25.4%, respectively) and bicyclogermacrene (24.9% and 10.9%, respectively). The oil from M. obscura was rich in oxygenated sesquiterpenes (83.2%), of which spathulenol (13.8%), caryophyllene oxide (37.2%) and globulol (7.9%) were the most abundant.

Plinia Plumier ex Linnaeus (1753: 516; for descriptions see Landrum & Kawasaki 1997: 529 and Wilson 2011: 255) is largely identified by the presence of congested to racemiform (very rarely paniculiform) inflorescences with tetramerous, bilocular and tetraovulate flowers with calyces persisting after anthesis and seeds with two distinct plano-convex cotyledons devoid of a hypocotyl. It is an American genus with about 75 recognized species from which about 40 are known from Brazil (Govaerts et al. 2017). Along the examination of southeastern Brazilian collections we have spotted three species with morphological characters suggestive of its inclusion in Plinia, for which new combinations in this genus are herein proposed. When possible, available online type images are cited by reference to herbarium acronyms and barcode numbers (acronyms follow Thiers 2017).

Myrcia arenaria, a new species of Myrcia sensu lato, is described, illustrated and compared with related species. The species is recognized by a combination of characters, which include elliptic to oval foliar blades, flower buds tearing at anthesis into 3 irregular lobes or 5 regular lobes; lobes obovate, apiculate, sericeous at the base and flowers without petals. This taxon seems to be restricted to the coastal areas of northeastern Brazil, growing in the restingas located in the states of Alagoas, Bahia, Pernambuco, and Sergipe. Additionally, we also proposed the synonymization of Marlierea leal-costae with Psidium amplexicaule. We also present a map showing the geographical distribution of the species.

Nine monophyletic groups have been recognized in Myrcia s.l. and this study presents nomenclatural updates for one of them—clade 7. The updates are based on 35 herbarium collections analysed in the context of a wider herbarium survey and field expeditions that allowed specimens to be analysed in situ . Lectotypes are provided for the 20 following basionyms: Aulomyrcia bicarinata , A. breviramis , A. calyptranthoides , A. ferruginea , A. mutabilis , A. pulchra , A. rufa , A. supraaxillaris , A. widgreniana , Calyptranthes cordata , C. densa , Eugenia paniculata , Eugenia rubiginosa , Eugeniopsis angustifolia , Myrcia bicolor , M. nitida , M. pilodes , M. pilotantha , M. plusiantha , and M. subcordata . Twelve synonymizations are proposed: A . rufa under Myrcia bicarinata ; A. supraaxillaris under Myrcia densa ; A. calyptranthoides under Myrcia mutabilis ; E. paniculata and E. rubiginosa under M. nitida ; Myrcia follii under M. plusiantha ; A. breviramis , A. pulchra , A. widgreniana , M. pilotantha and Myrcia jaguariaivensis under M. subcordata ; Marlierea vicina under Myrcia summa . Lastly, the holotype of Aulomyrcia tenuifolia is clarified and two new combinations are presented: Myrcia foveolata (based on Marlierea foveolata ) and Myrcia summa (based on Marlierea summa ).

The wood anatomy of 31 species representing four genera of subtribe Myrciinae, Myrtaceae, Calyptranthes, Gomidesia, Marlierea and Myrcia is described. In general the wood of subtribe Myrciinae can be characterised by solitary vessels, simple perforations, alternate vestured pits, fibres with bordered and/or vestured pits (fibre-tracheids), parenchyma scanty paratracheal, diffuse and/or diffuse-in-aggregates forming complete or interrupted bands, and heterocellular rays with disjunctive cell walls. The four genera share all these features, but exhibit considerable variation in axial parenchyma patterns and crystal occurrence and distribution. No anatomical features serve to separate the genera, but some, e.g., helical thickenings and crystals, appear to be restricted to species in one genus or another.

Resumo Apresentamos neste trabalho o estudo taxonomico das Myrtaceae ocorrentes no Parque Estadual do Itacolomi (PEIT), uma Unidade de Conservacao localizada no estado de Minas Gerais, no sul da Cadeia do Espinhaco. A vegetacao da area e formada por florestas montanas tropicais e campos rupestres. Para o tratamento taxonomico foram elaboradas descricoes, comentarios, chaves de identificacao e ilustracoes. Foram realizadas coletas de setembro 2009 a dezembro de 2010 e foram revisados os herbarios BHCB, OUPR, RB e VIC. 18. Marlierea tomentosa Cambess. in St.-Hilaire (1833: 373); Legrand & Klein(1971: 461���466). [Fig. 3H, I] Endemic to the Atlantic Forest (Sobral et al. 2009) from the northeast to south regions of Brazil (Sobral et al. 2010). In the Northeast, it is cited from the States of Bahia (Sobral et al. 2010). New records of this species for State of Pernambuco are presented here. This species is considered extinct in the State of Pernambuco, with no records in the last 60 years. Trees 6���12 m tall. This species differs from Marlierea excoriata by having larger leaves (30���40 �� 10���13 cm) and pilose fruit; it differs from other Myrcia species by having the calyx closed in the bud, tearing open irregularly. AS DUAS ESPÉCIES FORAM ANALISADAS SEGUNDO SUAS EPIDERMES, PARÊNQUIMA CLOROFILIANO, SISTEMA VASCULAR, TECIDOS DE SUSTENTAÇÃO (COLÊNQUIMA E ESCLERÊNQUIMA) E APRESENTAÇÃO DAS ESTRUTURAS SECRETORAS E SUBSTÂNCIAS SECRETADAS.

As zonas costeiras acolhem quadros de alta riqueza e relevância ecológica que as qualificam como importante ecossistema para conservação. O objetivo deste estudo foi listar as espécies que compõem a restinga da praia do Paiva e descrever a sua fisionomia. A área de restinga compreende 147 ha, situa-se no Município do Cabo de Santo Agostinho, PE, sob as coordenadas 08º07'30"S e 35º00'55"W. As coletas florísticas foram realizadas durante 28 meses, em todos os estratos. O solo foi classificado como Neossolo Quartzarênico; foram determinadas duas fisionomias: a floresta não-inundável e o fruticeto aberto não-inundável. Foram listadas 124 espécies, distribuídas em 103 gêneros e 55 famílias. As famílias com maior número de espécies foram Myrtaceae, com 11 espécies, Cyperaceae (10), Fabaceae (8), Euphorbiaceae (7), Rubiaceae (6) e Asteraceae (5). As espécies Anacardium occidentale, Tapirira guianensis, Chamaecrista ramosa, Protium heptaphyllum, Byrsonima sericea, Myrcia rotundifolia e Marlierea schotti são encontradas na maioria das restingas do Nordeste. No entanto, devido à incipiência dos estudos na Região não foram verificadas espécies endêmicas. The high biodiversity and richness of the coastal zone make it an important ecosystem to be preserved. The aim of this study is to list the species composition of the restinga area (147 ha.) of Paiva beach, in Cabo de Santo Agostinho-Pernambuco (08º07'30"S and 35º00'55"W) and describe the physiognomies. Floristic survey was carried out for 28 months for all strata. The soil was classified as Quartzarenic Neosoil and two physiognomies were determined: unflooded forest and unflooded open shrubby vegetation. One hundred-twenty-four species were recorded, distributed in 103 genera and 55 families. The families with the highest number of species were: Myrtaceae (11), Cyperaceae (10), Fabaceae (8), Euphorbiaceae (7), Rubiaceae (6) and Asteraceae (5). Anacardium occidentale, Byrsonima sericea, Chamaecrista ramosa, Marlierea schotti, Myrcia rotundifolia, Protium heptaphyllum and Tapirira guianensis are generally found in the majority of the sandy coastal plain in northeastern Brazil. However, due to insufficient studies, endemic species were not detected.

We here describe, illustrate and compare with related species Calyptranthes corticosa , Myrcia breviflora, M. cantana, M. castanea, M. divisoria, M. integra, M. laxa, M. longiramea, M. manausensis, M. maraana, M. symmetrica, M. uaioai and Plinia humaitana . Calyptranthes corticosa , from the Brazilian state of Acre, is related to C. paniculata , but is distinguished by its strongly angulate twigs and pauciflorous inflorescences; Myrcia breviflora , from the Brazilian state of Amazonas, is related to M. tafelbergica , but has shorter inflorescences with pentamerous flowers; M. cantana , from the Brazilian state of Roraima, is close to M. saxatilis , but has narrower blades and tetramerous flowers; M. castanea , from Amazonas, is related to M. magnoliifolia , but has persistently pilose, bullate leaves and densely pilose inflorescences and flowers; M. divisoria , from Acre, is related to M. calycampa , but has pilose twigs, larger blades and longer inflorescences with persisting bracts; M. integra , from the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Roraima and the Peruvian department of Loreto, is related to Marlierea umbraticola , but is distinguished by the blades with adaxially raised midvein and tetramerous flowers; M. laxa , from Amazonas, is related to M. aequatoriensis , but has smaller petioles, blades not bullate and pilose flowers; M. longiramea , from Amazonas, is related to M. clusiifolia , but has narrower blades crowded at the top of long branches and tetramerous flowers; M. manausensis , from Amazonas, is related to M. splendens but has blades with larger glandular dots and flowers with ovary longitudinally ridged; M. maraana , from Amazonas, is related to M. obumbrans , but has narrower, discolorous blades and tetramerous flowers; M. symmetrica , from the states of Amazonas and Para, is close to M. plusiantha , but differs by its mostly acuminate blades, shorter inflorescences and tetramerous flowers; M. uaioai , from Roraima, is related to Myrcia gentryi , being distinguished through its elliptic blades with adaxially raised midvein and consistently solitary flowers, and Plinia humaitana , from Amazonas, is related to P. pinnata , but has shorter, wider blades and seed without hypocotyl. Additionally, conservation status is proposed for all species; nevertheless, considering the fact that several species are known only from one collection a/or by mostly ancient collections, their status attribution is necessarily tentative.

Five new species of Myrcia s.l. are described and illustrated: Myrcia ascendens (related to Myrcia densa ), Myrcia attenuata (related to Myrcia bicolor ), Myrcia costeira (related to Myrcia bicarinata ), Myrcia rupestris (related to Myrcia lenheirensis ) and Myrcia subterminalis (related to Myrcia bicolor ). The new species occur in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest ( M. costeira and M. subterminalis ), the Espinhaco range in Brazil ( M. ascendens and M. rupestris ) and the eastern Guiana Shield in French Guiana ( M. attenuata ). Additionally, species are discussed regarding distribution, habitat, phenology and taxonomic affinity.

We describe, illustrate and compare with related species Calyptranthes anguerana, Eugenia altissima, E. caloneura, E. indistincta, E. mucugensis, E. rara, Myrcia alatiramea, M. hypophaea, M. petrophila, M. pseudovenulosa, M. ramiflora, M. trimera and M. unana . All species are presently known only from the state of Bahia, except Myrcia hypophaea , which extents northward until the state of Paraiba. Calyptranthes anguerana is related to C. concinna , differing through its monopodial and glabrous inflorescences; Eugenia altissima is apparently close to E. laruotteana , being distinguished by the larger flowers with ovaries glabrous inside; Eugenia caloneura is apparently related to E. leonorae , differing through its larger leaves and flowers buds with discrete calyx lobes; Eugenia indistincta is related to E.subavenia , differing by its pauciflorous inflorescences, smaller flowers and globose fruits; Eugenia mucugensis is related to E. sonderiana and E. luetzelburgii , being distinguished from the first by its wider blades, inflorescences with visible axes and longer pedicels, and from the second by its petiolate leaves and elliptic blades with midvein adaxially sulcate; Eugenia rara is apparently related to E. subterminalis , from which it is kept apart through its pilose flowers with calyx that tears irregularly at anthesis; Myrcia alatiramea is apparently related to M. anceps , being distinguished by its larger blades, pauciflorous inflorescences and flowers with calyx tube; Myrcia hypophaea is related to M. decorticans , but has subsessile leaves, abaxially darker blades and larger inflorescences; Myrcia petrophila is related to M. reticulosa , differing in its longer petioles, blades with rounded bases, pauciflorous inflorescences and pilose flowers; Myrcia pseudovenulosa is apparently related to M. venulosa , but has uniformly pilose flowers and bilocular ovaries; Myrcia ramiflora is apparently close to M. hirtiflora , differing through its larger blades and smaller, ramiflorous inflorescences; Myrcia trimera is related to Marlierea luschnathiana , but has larger and narrower blades, glabrous inflorescences, trimerous flower buds and flowers without petals, and Myrcia unana is close to M. maximiliana , but has narrower blades and larger calyx lobes. Additionally, conservation issues are briefly commented for each species.

The present study describes four new species of the exclusively Neotropical Myrcia s.l., which includes the genera Calyptranthes , Marlierea and Myrcia . The new species are named Myrcia cataphyllata (related to Myrcia bicolor ), Myrcia elevata (related to Marlierea velutina ), Myrcia megaphylla (very distinct from other species of Myrcia ) and Myrcia sessilissima (related to Myrcia tomentosa ). They are endemic to their respective biomes: one endemic to the Amazon forest ( M. elevata ); one from the Campo Rupestre (‘Rocky Fields’) vegetation ( M. sessilissima ); and two from the Atlantic Forest ( M. cataphyllata and M. megaphylla ). In addition to the descriptions, the study provides illustrations and comments about the distribution, habitat, phenology and taxonomic affinities of these species.

Calyptranthes conduplicata, C. vexata, Eugenia moritziana, E. pusilliflora, Marlierea suborbicularis, Myrcia crispa and M. subcordifolia are new records for the Brazilian flora. All species except Eugeniamoritziana, recorded from Espírito Santo state, are reported for the first time in Brazilian Amazonia.

O estudo de Marlierea Cambess. na Amazônia Brasileira tem como principal objetivo atualizar os dados sobre a morfologia e taxonomia das espécies da região, bem como fornecer subsídios para esclarecer a separação de Marlierea de Myrcia DC. ex Guill., conforme sugerem alguns autores. Na Amazônia Brasileira, Marlierea está representada por 11 espécies (Marlierea bipennis (O. Berg) McVaugh, M. caudata McVaugh, M. ensiformis McVaugh, M. ferruginea (Poir.) McVaugh, M. mcvaughii B. Holst, M. scytophylla Diels, M. spruceana O. Berg, M. subulata McVaugh, M. summa McVaugh, M. umbraticola (Kunth) O. Berg e M. velutina McVaugh) e uma mal conhecida (M. obumbrans (O. Berg) Nied.), habitando principalmente áreas de formações florestais. O gênero se caracteriza pelo hábito arbóreo ou arbustivo; folhas opostas (exceto em M. velutina que pode apresentar folhas opostas e/ou alternas); as inflorescências em panículas (de fascículos), racemos, cimeiras ou dicásios; botões florais geralmente fechados, abertura irregular do cálice, em 4-5 lobos, pétalas freqüentemente ausentes. Os Estados do Amazonas e Pará representam os dois principais centros de distribuição dessas espécies, sendo M. spruceana e M. umbraticola as espécies mais comuns. Marlierea obumbrans será melhor estudada posteriormente, devido apresentar sua delimitação taxonômica confusa entre Myrcia e Marlierea. A morphological study of Marlierea Cambess. occurring in Amazonian Brazil was carried out in order to obtain a better understanding of the morphology and taxonomy of all species in the region and to provide data to elucidate the taxonomic segregation of Marlierea from the morphologically similar Myrcia DC. ex Guill. In Amazonian Brazil, Marlierea is represented by 11, primarily forest, species (Marlierea bipennis (O. Berg) McVaugh, M. caudata McVaugh, M. ensiformis McVaugh, M. ferruginea (Poir.) McVaugh, M. mcvaughii B. Holst, M. scytophylla Diels, M. spruceana O. Berg, M. subulata McVaugh, M. summa McVaugh, M. umbraticola (Kunth) O. Berg, and M. velutina McVaugh). The taxonomically problematic M. obumbrans (O. Berg) Nied. is discussed as a badly known species. The species are trees or shrubs with opposite leaves (sometimes alternate in M. velutina); inflorescences racemose or paniculate (in panicles, cymes, or dichasiums), sometimes in fasicles; flower buds generally closed; calyx lobes 4-5, opening irregularly; and petals frequently absent. The states of Amazonas and Pará are the most species-rich. Marlierea spruceana and M. umbraticola are the most common species. Additional studies of M. obumbrans, morphologically intermediate between Marlierea and Myrcia, will be untaken in the future in order to establish the correct taxonomic placement of this enigmatic species.

Holst, M. scytophylla Diels, M. spruceana O. Berg, M. subulata McVaugh, M. summa McVaugh, M. umbraticola (Kunth) O. Berg e M. velutina McVaugh) e uma mal conhecida (M. obumbrans (O. Berg) Nied.), habitando principalmente áreas de formações florestais. O gênero se caracteriza pelo hábito arbóreo ou arbustivo; folhas opostas (exceto em M. velutina que pode apresentar folhas opostas e/ou alternas); as inflorescências em panículas (de fascículos), racemos, cimeiras ou dicásios; botões florais geralmente fechados, abertura irregular do cálice, em 4-5 lobos, pétalas freqüentemente ausentes. Os Estados do Amazonas e Pará representam os dois principais centros de distribuição dessas espécies, sendo M. spruceana e M. umbraticola as espécies mais comuns. Marlierea obumbrans será melhor estudada posteriormente, devido apresentar sua delimitação taxonômica confusa entre Myrcia e Marlierea.
