Abstract

Energy Harvesting strategies coupled with the improvement of electronics and the progressive reduction of power requirements have been widely recognized as fundamental to enable self-powered (or autonomous) devices. Among all the potential energy sources, kinetic energy stemming from mechanical vibrations has been particularly extensively investigated for EH purposes due to its characteristics of heterogeneity and ubiquity. To exploit such energy sources, a suitable coupling mechanism to convert vibrations into electric charge is required; it must take into account the wide frequency bandwidth of mechanical vibrations as encountered in everyday scenarios. This review offers an overview of linear vs. non-linear strategies for EH, with a specific focus on different approaches to implement efficient coupling mechanisms; the performances of the specific solutions covered in this work are discussed.

Abstract

In this work, we present a chemical extrinsic optical fiber sensor, based on a novel micro-pattern of silver nanoparticles, produced by InkJet printing on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate, covered by a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) film. The optical-chemical sensor chip is monitored via two plastic optical fibers (POFs) connected with a light source and a spectrometer. In particular, the pattern is formed by parallel lines arranged in orthogonal position with respect to the direction of the input light. As a proof of concept, we have deposited on the sensor surface an MIP receptor layer specific for furfural (2-FAL). The preliminary experimental results have shown a limit of detection (LOD) relative to 2-FAL equal to 0.05 ppm, demonstrating the goodness and feasibility in biochemical applications of the proposed sensing approach.

Dealing with the possibility of autonomously performing activities of daily living, two main aspects are mandatory: autonomous mobility and living independently. In particular, dealing with autonomous accessibility is strictly related to the possibility to perceive the environment and to gain a realistic and intuitive awareness of ongoing events and hazards. In order to promote living independently, caregivers (whether relatives or assistive services) need to be aware of the user's physical surroundings. The literature is rich in attempts to provide technical solutions to improve quality of life and autonomy for frail people, particularly with regard to the visually impaired. This review summarizes “state of the art” electronic aids for the visually impaired, and aims to to highlight the benefits and drawbacks of these aids. Abstract

This paper presents improvements to the computational model of MakkSim aimed at allowing the simulation of aged people and persons with mobility impairments. In particular, a method for modelling heterogeneity in speed is discussed and two special objects of the environment (i.e., stairs and seats), have been defined; in addition, a proposal for modelling the presence of a caretaker is described as a particular type of group of pedestrians. Finally, the paper presents a way of computing social costs implied by the environment taking into account the characteristics of pedestrians moving throughout the related facilities. The overall objective is to achieve a system usable for the evaluation of the usability and accessibility of planned environments and facilities by means of simulation, by also taking into account this category of people.
