1. Direct observation of Néel-type skyrmions and domain walls in a ferrimagnetic DyCo3 thin film

Abstract: Abstract Isolated magnetic skyrmions are stable, topologically protected spin textures that are at the forefront of research interests today due to their potential applications in information technology. A distinct class of skyrmion hosts are rare earth - transition metal (RE-TM) ferrimagnetic materials. To date, the nature and the control of basic traits of skyrmions in these materials are not fully understood. We show that for an archetypal ferrimagnetic material DyCo3 that exhibits a strong perpendicular anisotropy, the ferrimagnetic skyrmion size can be tuned by an external magnetic field. Moreover, by taking advantage of the high spatial resolution of scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and utilizing a large x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) contrast that occurs naturally at the RE resonant edges, we resolve the nature of the magnetic domain walls of ferrimagnetic skyrmions. We demonstrate that through this method one can easily discriminate between Bloch and Néel type domain walls for each individual skyrmion. For all isolated ferrimagnetic skyrmions, we observe that the domain walls are of Néel-type. This key information is corroborated with results of micromagnetic simulations and allows us to conclude on the nature of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) which concurs to the stabilisation of skyrmions in this ferrimagnetic system. Establishing that an intrinsic DMI occurs in RE-TM materials will also be beneficial towards a deeper understanding of chiral spin texture control in ferrimagnetic materials.

4. Pump–probe x-ray microscopy of photo-induced magnetization dynamics at MHz repetition rates

Abstract: We present time-resolved scanning x-ray microscopy measurements with picosecond photo-excitation via a tailored infrared pump laser at a scanning transmission x-ray microscope. Specifically, we image the laser-induced demagnetization and remagnetization of thin ferrimagnetic GdFe films proceeding on a few nanoseconds timescale. Controlling the heat load on the sample via additional reflector and heatsink layers allows us to conduct destruction-free measurements at a repetition rate of 50 MHz. Near-field enhancement of the photo-excitation and controlled annealing effects lead to laterally heterogeneous magnetization dynamics which we trace with 30 nm spatial resolution. Our work opens new opportunities to study photo-induced dynamics on the nanometer scale, with access to picosecond to nanosecond time scales, which is of technological relevance, especially in the field of magnetism.

5. Realization of a magnonic analog adder with frequency-division multiplexing

Abstract: Being able to accurately control the interaction of spin waves is a crucial challenge for magnonics in order to offer an alternative wave-based computing scheme for certain technological applications. Especially in neural networks and neuromorphic computing, wave-based approaches can offer significant advantages over traditional CMOS-based binary computing schemes with regard to performance and power consumption. In this work, we demonstrate precise modulation of phase- and amplitude-sensitive interference of coherent spin waves in a yttrium–iron–garnet based magnonic analog adder device, while also showing the feasibility of frequency-division multiplexing. Using time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy, the interference was directly observed, giving an important proof of concept for this kind of analog computing device and its underlying working principle. This constitutes a step toward wave-based analog computing using magnons as an information carrier.

Abstract: Nanoscaled magnetic particle ensembles are promising building blocks for realizing magnon based binary logic. Element-specific real-space monitoring of magnetic resonance modes with sampling rates in the GHz regime is imperative for the experimental verification of future complex magnonic devices. Here we present the observation of different phasic magnetic resonance modes using the element-specific technique of time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy within a chain of dipolarly coupled Fe _3 O _4 nanoparticles (40–50 nm particle size) inside a single cell of a magnetotactic bacterium Magnetospirillum magnetotacticum . The particles are probed with 25 nm resolution at the Fe L _3 x-ray absorption edge in response to a microwave excitation of 4.07 GHz. A plethora of resonance modes is observed within multiple particle segments oscillating in- and out-of-phase, well resembled by micromagnetic simulations.

Abstract: Abstract Background Peritonitis is responsible for thousands of deaths annually in Germany alone. Even source control (SC) and antibiotic treatment often fail to prevent severe sepsis or septic shock, and this situation has hardly improved in the past two decades. Most experimental immunomodulatory therapeutics for sepsis have been aimed at blocking or dampening a specific pro-inflammatory immunological mediator. However, the patient collective is large and heterogeneous. There are therefore grounds for investigating the possibility of developing personalized therapies by classifying patients into groups according to biomarkers. This study aims to combine an assessment of the efficacy of treatment with a preparation of human immunoglobulins G, A, and M (IgGAM) with individual status of various biomarkers (immunoglobulin level, procalcitonin, interleukin 6, antigen D-related human leucocyte antigen (HLA-DR), transcription factor NF-κB1, adrenomedullin, and pathogen spectrum). Methods/design A total of 200 patients with sepsis or septic shock will receive standard-of-care treatment (SoC). Of these, 133 patients (selected by 1:2 randomization) will in addition receive infusions of IgGAM for 5 days. All patients will be followed for approximately 90 days and assessed by the multiple-organ failure (MOF) score, by the EQ QLQ 5D quality-of-life scale, and by measurement of vital signs, biomarkers (as above), and survival. Discussion This study is intended to provide further information on the efficacy and safety of treatment with IgGAM and to offer the possibility of correlating these with the biomarkers to be studied. Specifically, it will test (at a descriptive level) the hypothesis that patients receiving IgGAM who have higher inflammation status (IL-6) and poorer immune status (low HLA-DR, low immunoglobulin levels) have a better outcome than patients who do not receive IgGAM. It is expected to provide information that will help to close the knowledge gap concerning the association between the effect of IgGAM and the presence of various biomarkers, thus possibly opening the way to a personalized medicine. Abstract: With the advent of modern synchrotron sources, X-ray microscopy was developed as a vigorous tool for imaging material structures with element-specific, structural, chemical and magnetic sensitivity at resolutions down to 25 nm and below. Moreover, the X-ray time structure emitted from the synchrotron source (short bunches of less than 100 ps width) provides a unique possibility to combine high spatial resolution with high temporal resolution for periodic processes by means of pump-and-probe measurements. To that end, TimeMaxyne was developed as a time-resolved acquisition setup for the scanning X-ray microscope MAXYMUS at the BESSY II synchrotron in order to perform high precision, high throughput pump-and-probe imaging. The setup combines a highly sensitive single photon detector, a real time photon sorting system and a dedicated synchronization scheme for aligning various types of sample excitations of up to 50 GHz bandwidth to the photon probe. Hence, TimeMaxyne has been demonstrated to be capable of shot-noise limited, time-resolved imaging, at time resolutions of 50 ps and below, only limited by the X-ray pulse widths of the synchrotron.

Abstract: Antidot lattices are potential candidates to act as bit patterned media for data storage as they are able to trap nanoscale magnetic domains between two adjacent holes. Here, we demonstrate the combination of micromagnetic modeling and x-ray microscopy. Detailed simulation of these systems can only be achieved by micromagnetic modeling that takes thermal effects into account. For this purpose, a Landau–Lifshitz–Bloch approach is used here. The calculated melting of magnetic domains within the antidot lattice is reproduced experimentally by x-ray microscopy. Furthermore, we compare conventional scanning transmission x-ray microscopy with resolution enhanced ptychography. Hence, we achieve a resolution of 13 nm. The results demonstrate that ptychographic imaging can also recover magnetic contrast in the presence of a strong topological variation and is generally applicable toward magnetic samples requiring ultimate resolution.

11. High-throughput synthesis of modified Fresnel zone plate arrays via ion beam lithography

Abstract: Fresnel zone plates (FZP) are diffractive photonic devices used for high-resolution imaging and lithography at short wavelengths. Their fabrication requires nano-machining capabilities with exceptional precision and strict tolerances such as those enabled by modern lithography methods. In particular, ion beam lithography (IBL) is a noteworthy method thanks to its robust direct writing/milling capability. IBL allows for rapid prototyping of high-resolution FZPs that can be used for high-resolution imaging at soft X-ray energies. Here, we discuss improvements in the process enabling us to write zones down to 15 nm in width, achieving an effective outermost zone width of 30 nm. With a 35% reduction in process time and an increase in resolution by 26% compared to our previous results, we were able to resolve 21 nm features of a test sample using the FZP. The new process conditions are then applied for fabrication of large arrays of high-resolution zone plates. Results show that relatively large areas can be decorated with nanostructured devices via IBL by using multipurpose SEM/FIB instruments with potential applications in FEL focusing, extreme UV and soft X-ray lithography and as wavefront sensing devices for beam diagnostics.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION:Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) is a well-known phenomenon in critically ill patients. Effects of a moderately elevated intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) on lung mechanics are still not fully analyzed. Moreover, the optimal positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) in elevated IAP is unclear. METHODS:We investigated changes in lung mechanics and transformation in histological lung patterns using three different PEEP levels in eighteen deeply anesthetized pigs with an IAP of 10 mmHg. After establishing the intra-abdominal pressure, we randomized the animals into 3 groups. Each of n = 6 (Group A = PEEP 5, B = PEEP 10 and C = PEEP 15 cmH2O). End-expiratory lung volume (EELV/kg body weight (bw)), pulmonary compliance (Cstat), driving pressure (ΔP) and transpulmonary pressure (ΔPL) were measured for 6 hours. 13. Xenon Plasma Focused Ion Beam Milling for Obtaining Soft X-ray Transparent Samples

Abstract: We employ xenon (Xe) plasma focused ion beam (PFIB) milling to obtain soft X-ray transparent windows out of bulk samples. The use of a Xe PFIB allows for the milling of thin windows (several 100 nm thick) with areas of the order of 100 µm × 100 µm into bulk substrates. In addition, we present an approach to empirically determine the transmission level of such windows during fabrication by correlating their electron and soft X-ray transparencies. We perform scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) imaging on a sample obtained by Xe PFIB milling to demonstrate the conceptual feasibility of the technique. Our thinning approach provides a fast and simplified method for facilitating soft X-ray transmission measurements of epitaxial samples and it can be applied to a variety of different sample systems and substrates that are otherwise not accessible.

14. Direct observation of temperature dependent vortex dynamics in a La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3} micromagnet

Abstract: Although it is well documented that the vortex core in a micromagnet can switch polarization in response to magnetic field pulses, the temperature dependence of this process has not yet been addressed by experiments. Using scanning transmission x-ray microscopy, we investigate the magnetic vortex dynamics in a La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3} microplatelet at temperatures ranging from 150K up to T_{C} at 350K. The time-resolved images reveal qualitatively different dynamic regimes as a function of temperature and applied field, as the relative strengths of the micromagnetic energy terms strongly vary over this temperature range. By explicitly accounting for the temperature dependence of the magnetic parameters in our micromagnetic simulations, we found excellent agreement with the experiments over the full measurement range. In line with previous models, the simulations reveal that the vortex core switches polarization when it reaches a critical velocity that mainly depends on the strength of the exchange interaction. It is therefore strongly temperature dependent, thus explaining our observation of the different dynamical regimes.

Abstract: Using a time-resolved detection scheme in scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), we measured element resolved ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) at microwave frequencies up to 10 GHz and a spatial resolution down to 20 nm at two different synchrotrons. We present different methods to separate the contribution of the background from the dynamic magnetic contrast based on the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) effect. The relative phase between the GHz microwave excitation and the X-ray pulses generated by the synchrotron, as well as the opening angle of the precession at FMR can be quantified. A detailed analysis for homogeneous and inhomogeneous magnetic excitations demonstrates that the dynamic contrast indeed behaves as the usual XMCD effect. The dynamic magnetic contrast in time-resolved STXM has the potential be a powerful tool to study the linear and nonlinear, magnetic excitations in magnetic micro- and nano-structures with unique spatial-temporal resolution in combination with element selectivity.

16. Direct imaging of phase relation in a pair of coupled vortex oscillators

Abstract: We study the magnetization dynamics in a stray-field coupled pair of ferromagnetic squares in the vortex state. Micromagnetic simulations give an idea of the mediating stray field during vortex gyration. The frequency-dependent phase relation between the vortices in the spatially separated squares is studied using time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy while one element is harmonically excited via an alternating magnetic field. It is shown that the normal modes of coupled vortex-core motion can be understood as an attractive (low-frequency) and a repulsive (high-frequency) mode of the effective magnetic moments of the microstructures.

17. The role of individual defects on the magnetic screening of HTSC films

Abstract: The magnetic flux penetration into thin films of high-temperature superconducting YBCO is visualized with high spatial resolution via x-ray microscopy. Therefore superconductors are coated with soft-magnetic CoFeB layers that reproduce the magnetic flux density distribution in an adjacent superconducting film and exhibit at the same time a large XMCD effect. For the first time we present scanning x-ray microscopy in the total electron yield mode using polarized x-rays providing simultaneously structural and magnetic information of the surface with high spatial resolution. Correlating the images of structural and magnetic information the role of individual defects on the magnetic screening capability of the superconductor can be identified.

Abstract: Background: Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in otherwise healthy neonates frequently requires urgent surgical procedure but anaesthesia care may result in respiratory complications, such as hypoxaemia, pulmonary aspiration of gastric contents, and postoperative apnoea. The primary aim was to study whether or not the incidence of difficult airway management and of hypoxaemia in neonates undergoing pyloric stenosis repair was higher than that in neonates undergoing other surgeries. Methods: Data on neonates and infants undergoing anaesthesia and surgery for pyloric stenosis were extracted from the NEonate and Children audiT of Anesthesia pRactice In Europe (NECTARINE) database, for secondary analysis. Results: We identified 310 infants who had anaesthesia for surgery for pyloric stenosis. Difficult airway management (more than two attempts at laryngoscopy) was higher in children with pyloric stenosis when compared with the entire NECTARINE cohort (7.9% [95% confidence interval {CI}, 5.22–11.53] vs 4.4% [95% CI, 1.99–6.58]; relative risk [RR]=1.81 [95% CI, 1.21–2.69]; P=0.004), whereas transient hypoxaemia with oxygen saturation

We report the imaging of short-wavelength spin waves in a continuous nanometer-thick YIG film with a Co stripe patterned on top. Dynamic dipolar coupling between the YIG film and the Co stripe lowers the spin-wave wavelength when spin waves enter the YIG/Co bilayer region from the bare YIG film, causing partial reflection at the YIG/Co edge. We use time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy to image the mode conversion process down to a wavelength of 280 nm and extract the spin-wave dispersion, decay length, and magnetic damping in the YIG/Co bilayer. We also analyze spin-wave reflection from the YIG/Co edge and its dependence on the wavelength of incoming and transmitted spin waves.

Abstract: Topological charge plays a significant role in a range of physical systems. In particular, observations of real space topological objects in magnetic materials have been largely limited to skyrmions states with a unitary topological charge. Recently, more exotic states with varying topology, such as antiskyrmions, merons, or bimerons and 3D states such as skyrmion strings, chiral bobbers, and hopfions, have been experimentally reported. Along these lines, the realization of states with higher order topology has the potential to open new avenues of research in topological magnetism and its spintronic applications. Here, real space imaging of such spin textures, including skyrmion, skyrmionium, skyrmion bag, and skyrmion sack states, observed in exfoliated flakes of the van der Waals magnet Fe3 amp; 8722;xGeTe2 FGT is reported. These composite skyrmions may emerge from seeded, loop like states condensed into the stripe domain structure, demonstrating the possibility to realize spin textures with arbitrary integer topological charge within exfoliated flakes of 2D magnets. The general nature of the formation mechanism motivates the search for composite skyrmion states in both well known and new magnetic materials, which may yet reveal an even richer spectrum of higher order topological objects

Abstract: Background Patients with hematological malignancy or other cancers as well as immunosuppression bear a high risk for severe COVID-19. Monoclonal antibodies (mAb) are efficient at early stages of the disease but may lose potency with new variants. Trials on plasma from convalescent donors in unselected patients have not shown clinical benefit. No randomized trials focussing on patients with underlying disease have been published. Methods We conducted an open-label, multicenter, randomized controlled trial to evaluate efficacy of plasma (CVP - convalescent or after vaccination) in patients with COVID-19 at high risk for adverse outcome in Germany. We assessed the effect of high-titer CVP (2 units from different donors, 238-337 ml each, on subsequent days). Patients with hematological or other malignancy (group 1), immunosuppression (group 2), age >50 and ≤75 years and lymphopenia and/or high D-dimers (group 3) or age >75 years (group 4) who were hospitalized with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection and with an oxygen saturation ≤94% were included. Primary outcome measure was time to clinical improvement on a seven-point ordinal scale, secondary outcome was mortality (Janssen et al. Trials 2020 Oct 6;21(1):828). Results Overall, 133 patients were randomized, 68 received CVP with an additional 10 patients as a crossover on day 10. Median age (range) was 68 years (39-95) in the CVP group and 70 (38-90) in controls. For the entire cohort, no significant difference was seen in time to improvement (median days: CVP 12.5 vs. control 18; HR 1.24 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.83-1.85), p=0.29). Subgroup analysis (group 1+2) revealed shortened time to improvement (median days CVP 13 vs. control 32; HR 2.03 (95%CI 1.17-3.6), p=0.01) and mortality was reduced (mortality CVP n=6 (18%) vs. control n=10 (29%). No significant differences in time to improvement were observed in group 3 or 4 (HR 0.72 (95%CI 0.41-1.28), p=0.26). No relevant adverse events were observed. Conclusion CVP improves time to clinical improvement and mortality for COVID-19 patients with underlying hematological disease/cancer or other reasons of impaired immune response. Abstract: Background: Neonates and infants are susceptible to hypoxaemia in the perioperative period. The aim of this study was to analyse interventions related to anaesthesia tracheal intubations in this European cohort and identify their clinical consequences. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of tracheal intubations of the European multicentre observational trial (NEonate and Children audiT of Anaesthesia pRactice IN Europe [NECTARINE]) in neonates and small infants with difficult tracheal intubation. The primary endpoint was the incidence of difficult intubation and the related complications. The secondary endpoints were the risk factors for severe hypoxaemia attributed to difficult airway management, and 30 and 90 day outcomes. Results: Tracheal intubation was planned in 4683 procedures. Difficult tracheal intubation, defined as two failed attempts of direct laryngoscopy, occurred in 266 children (271 procedures) with an incidence (95% confidence interval [CI]) of 5.8% (95% CI, 5.1e6.5). Abstract: BACKGROUND Little is known about current clinical practice concerning peri-operative red blood cell transfusion in neonates and small infants. Guidelines suggest transfusions based on haemoglobin thresholds ranging from 8.5 to 12��g��dl-1, distinguishing between children from birth to day 7 (week 1), from day 8 to day 14 (week 2) or from day 15 (��week 3) onwards. OBJECTIVE To observe peri-operative red blood cell transfusion practice according to guidelines in relation to patient outcome. DESIGN A multicentre observational study. SETTING The NEonate-Children sTudy of Anaesthesia pRactice IN Europe (NECTARINE) trial recruited patients up to 60 weeks' postmenstrual age undergoing anaesthesia for surgical or diagnostic procedures from 165 centres in 31 European countries between March 2016 and January 2017. PATIENTS The data included 5609 patients undergoing 6542 procedures. Inclusion criteria was a peri-operative red blood cell transfusion. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The primary endpoint was the haemoglobin level triggering a transfusion for neonates in week 1, week 2 and week 3. Secondary endpoints were transfusion volumes, 'delta haemoglobin' (preprocedure - transfusion-triggering) and 30-day and 90-day morbidity and mortality. RESULTS Peri-operative red blood cell transfusions were recorded during 447 procedures (6.9%). The median haemoglobin levels triggering a transfusion were 9.6 [IQR 8.7 to 10.9] g��dl-1 for neonates in week 1, 9.6 [7.7 to 10.4] g��dl-1 in week 2 and 8.0 [7.3 to 9.0] g��dl-1 in week 3. The median transfusion volume was 17.1 [11.1 to 26.4] ml��kg-1 with a median delta haemoglobin of 1.8 [0.0 to 3.6] g��dl-1. Thirty-day morbidity was 47.8% with an overall mortality of 11.3%. CONCLUSIONS Results indicate lower transfusion-triggering haemoglobin thresholds in clinical practice than suggested by current guidelines. The high morbidity and mortality of this NECTARINE sub-cohort calls for investigative action and evidence-based guidelines addressing peri-operative red blood cell transfusions strategies. Abstract: Magnons have proven to be a promising candidate for low-power wave-based computing. The ability to encode information not only in amplitude but also in phase allows for increased data transmission rates. However, efficiently exciting nanoscale spin waves for a functional device requires sophisticated lithography techniques and therefore, remains a challenge. Here, we report on a method to measure the full spin wave isofrequency contour for a given frequency and field. A single antidot within a continuous thin film excites wave vectors along all directions within a single excitation geometry. Varying structural parameters or introducing Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction allows the manipulation and control of the isofrequency contour, which is desirable for the fabrication of future magnonic devices. Additionally, the same antidot structure is utilized as a multipurpose spin wave device. Depending on its position with respect to the microstrip antenna, it can either be an emitter for short spin waves or a directional converter for incoming plane waves. Using simulations we show that such a converter structure is capable of generating a coherent spin wave beam. By introducing a short wavelength spin wave beam into existing magnonic gate logic, it is conceivable to reduce the size of devices to the micrometer scale. This method gives access to short wavelength spin waves to a broad range of magnonic devices without the need for refined sample preparation techniques. The presented toolbox for spin wave manipulation, emission, and conversion is a crucial step for spin wave optics and gate logic.

Abstract: For understanding magnonic materials the fundamental characterization of their frequency response is essential. However, determining full dispersion relations and real space wavelength measurements are challenging and time-consuming tasks. We present an approach for spin wave excitation by a modified Sinc pulse, which combines a cosine signal with a conventional Sinc function. The resulting adjustable frequency bands lead to a broadband spin wave excitation at uniform power levels. Subsequently, time resolved scanning transmission X-ray microscopy is used for direct imaging of all excited spin waves in real space. To demonstrate the capabilities of this approach, a modified Sinc excitation of an ultra-thin yttrium-iron-garnet film is shown that simultaneously reveals phase, amplitude, and k-space information from a single measurement. Consequently, this approach allows a fast and thorough access to the full dispersion relation including spatial maps of the individual spin wave modes, enabling complete characterization of magnonic materials down to the nanoscale in real and reciprocal space.

Abstract: On-chip signal processing at microwave frequencies is key for modern mobile communication. When one aims at small footprints, low power consumption, reprogrammable filters, and delay lines, magnons in low-damping ferrimagnets offer great promise. Ferromagnetic grating couplers have been reported to be specifically useful as microwave-to-magnon transducers. However, their interconversion efficiency is unknown and real-space measurements of the emitted magnon wavelengths have not yet been accomplished. Here, we image with subwavelength spatial resolution the magnon emission process into ferrimagnetic yttrium iron garnet (YIG) at frequencies up to 8 GHz. We evidence propagating magnons of a wavelength of 98.7 nm underneath the gratings, which enter the YIG without a phase jump. Counterintuitively, the magnons exhibit an even increased amplitude in YIG, which is unexpected and due to a further wavelength conversion process. Our results are of key importance for magnonic components, which efficiently control microwave signals on the nanoscale.

31. A high frequency builder software for arbitrary radio frequency signals

Abstract: While the frequencies accessible by signal generators steadily rise, the synthesization of complex and arbitrary waveforms with high frequency components remains challenging, especially when restricted by an external reference clock. In this article, we present a comprehensive software package combined with state-of-the-art hardware as a solution for the generation of highly sampled, arbitrary radio frequency waveforms. The software can be used to conduct both synchronous and heterodyne pump–probe experiments due to a variety of different synchronization modules. While both kinds of modules allow for standard waveforms, such as sines, pulses, and bursts, as well as any arbitrary signal, the heterodyne modules additionally are not restricted by the reference clock frequency. Both the output and the synchronization module can be adapted to support additional measurement devices. Due to the modular software structure, individual classes can be exchanged while maintaining all functionalities. The software provides a user friendly graphical interface that allows us to compose, save, and load complex arbitrary waveforms within only a few steps. The frequency selectivity provided by the software-hardware combination allows us to directly target specific excitation states of physical systems. Conducting a heterodyne scanning transmission x-ray microscopy experiment, we are able to demonstrate the capabilities of the software when paired with a high sample rate arbitrary waveform generator. The heterodyne synchronization modules allow for unlimited flexibility leveraging arbitrary waveform generation to their full power. By solving the challenges of synthesizing highly complex electromagnetic waves, the software enables a large variety of experiments to be performed more conveniently.

32. Toggle-like current-induced Bloch point dynamics of 3D skyrmion strings in a room-temperature nanowire

Abstract: Research into practical applications of magnetic skyrmions, nanoscale solitons with interesting topological and transport properties [1,2], has traditionally focused on two dimensional (2D) thin-film systems[3,4]. However, the recent observation of novel three dimensional (3D) skyrmion-like structures, such as hopfions [5], skyrmion strings (SkS) [6-9], skyrmion bundles [11] and skyrmion braids [12], motivates the investigation of new designs, aiming to exploit the third spatial dimension for more compact and higher performance spintronic devices in 3D or curvilinear geometries [13-15]. A crucial requirement of such device schemes is the control of the 3D magnetic structures via charge or spin currents, which has yet to be experimentally observed. In this work, we utilise real-space imaging to investigate the dynamics of a 3D SkS within a nanowire of Co8Zn9Mn3 at room temperature. Utilising single, nanoscale current pulses, we demonstrate current-induced nucleation of a single SkS, and a toggle-like positional switching of an individual Bloch point at the end of a SkS. The observations highlight the possibility to locally manipulate 3D topological spin textures, opening up a range of design concepts for future 3D spintronic devices.

33. Imaging magnonic frequency multiplication in nanostructured antidot lattices

Abstract: Frequency multiplication is an essential part of electronics and optics which led to numerous indispensable applications. In this paper, we utilize a combination of scanning transmission x ray microscopy and micromagnetic simulations to directly image magnonic frequency multiplication by means of dynamic real space magnetization measurements. We experimentally demonstrate frequency multiplication up to the seventh order, which enables the generation of nanoscale spin waves at 6GHz with excitation frequencies of less than 1GHz. Good agreement between the experiment and micromagnetic simulations allows us to build a micromagnetic model capable of predicting conversion efficiencies and multiplexing capabilities of the system. Furthermore, simulations reveal that more than two rows of antidots do not increase the conversion efficiency substantially. By enabling magnonic multiplexing with low input frequencies while not exceeding the size of a few microns, the device will lead to numerous applications, further advancing the capabilities of magnonic data transmission

Abstract: Over the past few years, the use of nanomagnets in biomedical applications has increased. Among others, magnetic nanostructures can be used as diagnostic and therapeutic agents in cardiovascular diseases, to locally destroy cancer cells, to deliver drugs at specific positions, and to guide (and track) stem cells to damaged body locations in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. All these applications rely on the magnetic properties of the nanomagnets which are mostly determined by their magnetic anisotropy. Despite its importance, the magnetic anisotropy of the individual magnetic nanostructures is unknown. Currently available magnetic sensitive microscopic methods are either limited in spatial resolution or in magnetic field strength or, more relevant, do not allow one to measure magnetic signals of nanomagnets embedded in biological systems. Hence, the use of nanomagnets in biomedical applications must rely on mean values obtained after averaging samples containing thousands of dissimilar entities. Here we present a hybrid experimental/theoretical method capable of working out the magnetic anisotropy constant and the magnetic easy axis of individual magnetic nanostructures embedded in biological systems. The method combines scanning transmission X-ray microscopy using an axi-asymmetric magnetic field with theoretical simulations based on the Stoner-Wohlfarth model. The validity of the method is demonstrated by determining the magnetic anisotropy constant and magnetic easy axis direction of 15 intracellular magnetite nanoparticles (50 nm in size) biosynthesized inside a magnetotactic bacterium.

Abstract: Magnetic droplets are non-topological magnetodynamical solitons displaying a wide range of complex dynamic phenomena with potential for microwave signal generation. Bubbles, on the other hand, are internally static cylindrical magnetic domains, stabilized by external fields and magnetostatic interactions. In its original theory, the droplet was described as an imminently collapsing bubble stabilized by spin transfer torque and, in its zero-frequency limit, as equivalent to a bubble. Without nanoscale lateral confinement, pinning, or an external applied field, such a nanobubble is unstable, and should collapse. Here, we show that we can freeze dynamic droplets into static nanobubbles by decreasing the magnetic field. While the bubble has virtually the same resistance as the droplet, all signs of low-frequency microwave noise disappear. The transition is fully reversible and the bubble can be thawed back into a droplet if the magnetic field is increased under current. Whereas the droplet collapses without a sustaining current, the bubble is highly stable and remains intact for days without external drive. Electrical measurements are complemented by direct observation using scanning transmission x-ray microscopy, which corroborates the analysis and confirms that the bubble is stabilized by pinning., 23 pages, 5 figures

Both methods, however, produce randomly arranged skyrmions, which inherently limits the precision on the location at which the skyrmions are nucleated. Here, we show that nanopatterning of the anisotropy landscape with a He$^+$-ion beam creates well-defined skyrmion nucleation sites, thereby transforming the skyrmion localization into a deterministic process. Abstract: Ferromagnetic resonance modes in a single rectangular Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ microstrip were directly imaged using time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy combined with a phase-locked ferromagnetic resonance excitation scheme and the findings were corroborated by micromagnetic simulations. Although under uniform excitation in a single confined microstructure typically standing spin waves are expected, all imaged spin waves showed a nonstanding character both, at and off resonance, the latter being additionally detected with microantenna-based ferromagnetic resonance. Abstract: Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that hold great promise as nanoscale information carriers in non-volatile memory and logic devices. While room-temperature magnetic skyrmions and their current-induced manipulation were recently demonstrated, the stray field resulting from their finite magnetization as well as their topological charge limit their minimum size and reliable motion in tracks. Antiferromagnetic (AF) skyrmions allow these limitations to be lifted owing to their vanishing magnetization and net zero topological charge, promising room-temperature, ultrasmall skyrmions, fast dynamics, and insensitivity to external magnetic fields. While room-temperature AF spin textures have been recently demonstrated, the observation and controlled nucleation of AF skyrmions operable at room temperature in industry-compatible synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) material systems is still lacking. Here we demonstrate that isolated skyrmions can be stabilized at zero field and room temperature in a fully compensated SAF. Using X-ray microscopy techniques, we are able to observe the skyrmions in the different SAF layers and demonstrate their antiparallel alignment. The results are substantiated by micromagnetic simulations and analytical models using experimental parameters, which confirm the chiral SAF skyrmion spin texture and allow the identification of the physical mechanisms that control the SAF skyrmion size and stability. We also demonstrate the local nucleation of SAF skyrmions via local current injection as well as ultrafast laser excitations at zero field. These results will enable the utilization of SAF skyrmions in skyrmion-based devices.

Abstract: A three-dimensional singular point that consists of two oppositely aligned emergent monopoles is identified in continuous CoTb thin films, as confirmed by complementary techniques of resonant elastic x-ray scattering, Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission x-ray microscopy. This new type of topological defect can be regarded as a superposition of an emergent magnetic monopole and an antimonopole, around which the source and drain of the magnetic flux overlap in space. We experimentally prove that the observed spin twist seen in Lorentz transmission electron microscopy reveals the cross-section of the superimposed three-dimensional structure, providing a straightforward strategy for the observation of magnetic singularities. Such a quasi particle provides an excellent platform for studying the rich physics of emergent electromagnetism.

Abstract: X ray microspectroscopy is a powerful analytical method in geoscientific and environmental research as it provides a unique combination of nanoscale imaging with high spectroscopic sensitivity at relatively low beam related sample damage. In this study, classical scanning transmission soft X ray microscopy STXM with X ray absorption spectroscopy and the recently established soft X ray ptychography are applied to the analysis of selected rock varnish samples from urban and arid desert environments. X ray ptychography enhances the spatial resolution relative to STXM by up to 1 order of magnitude. With its high chemical sensitivity, it can resolve nanoscale differences in valence states of the key varnish elements manganese Mn and iron. Our results emphasize the complex nanoarchitecture of rock varnish as well as the diverse mineralogy of the Mn oxy hydroxide matrix and its embedded dust grains. In contrast to the fast growing urban varnish, the slow growing arid desert varnish revealed a remarkable nanoscale stratification of alternating Mn valence states, providing hints on the layer wise and still enigmatic growth process

Abstract: Owing to the experimental discovery of magnetic skyrmions stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya and/or dipolar interactions in thin films, there is a recent upsurge of interest in magnetic skyrmions with antiferromagnetic spins in order to overcome the fundamental limitations inherent with skyrmions in ferromagnetic materials. Here, we report on the observation of compact ferrimagnetic skyrmions for the class of amorphous alloys consisting of 4f rare-earth and 3d transition-metal elements with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, using a DyCo3 film, that are identified by combining X-ray magnetic scattering, scanning transmission X-ray microscopy, and Hall transport technique. These skyrmions, with antiparallel aligned Dy and Co magnetic moments and a characteristic core radius of about 40 nm, are formed during the nucleation and annihilation of the magnetic maze-like domain pattern exhibiting a topological Hall effect contribution. Our findings provide a promising route for fundamental research in the field of ferrimagnetic/antiferromagnetic spintronics towards practical applications.

Abstract: Spin waves offer intriguing novel perspectives for computing and signal processing, since their damping can be lower than the Ohmic losses in conventional CMOS circuits. For controlling the spatial extent and propagation of spin waves on the actual chip, magnetic domain walls show considerable potential as magnonic waveguides. However, low-loss guidance of spin waves with nanoscale wavelengths, in particular around angled tracks, remains to be shown. Here we experimentally demonstrate that such advanced control of propagating spin waves can be obtained using natural features of magnetic order in an interlayer exchange-coupled, anisotropic ferromagnetic bilayer. Using Scanning Transmission X-Ray Microscopy, we image generation of spin waves and their propagation across distances exceeding multiple times the wavelength, in extended planar geometries as well as along one-dimensional domain walls, which can be straight and curved. The observed range of wavelengths is between 1 {\mu}m and 150 nm, at corresponding excitation frequencies from 250 MHz to 3 GHz. Our results show routes towards practical implementation of magnonic waveguides employing domain walls in future spin wave logic and computational circuits.

Abstract: Background: Neonates and infants requiring anaesthesia are at risk of physiological instability and complications, but triggers for peri-anaesthetic interventions and associations with subsequent outcome are unknown. Methods: This prospective, observational study recruited patients up to 60 weeks' postmenstrual age undergoing anaesthesia for surgical or diagnostic procedures from 165 centres in 31 European countries between March 2016 and January 2017. The primary aim was to identify thresholds of pre-determined physiological variables that triggered a medical intervention. The secondary aims were to evaluate morbidities, mortality at 30 and 90 days, or both, and associations with critical events. Results: Infants (n=5609) born at mean (standard deviation [SD]) 36.2 (4.4) weeks postmenstrual age (35.7% preterm) underwent 6542 procedures within 63 (48) days of birth. 47. Asynchronous current-induced switching of rare-earth and transition-metal sublattices in ferrimagnetic alloys

Abstract: Ferrimagnetic alloys are model systems for understanding the ultrafast magnetization switching in materials with antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices. Here we investigate the dynamics of the rare-earth and transition-metal sublattices in ferrimagnetic GdFeCo and TbCo dots excited by spin–orbit torques with combined temporal, spatial and elemental resolution. We observe distinct switching regimes in which the magnetizations of the two sublattices either remain synchronized throughout the reversal process or switch following different trajectories in time and space. In the latter case, we observe a transient ferromagnetic state that lasts up to 2 ns. The asynchronous switching of the two magnetizations is ascribed to the master–agent dynamics induced by the spin–orbit torques on the transition-metal and rare-earth sublattices and their weak antiferromagnetic coupling, which depends sensitively on the alloy microstructure. Larger antiferromagnetic exchange leads to faster switching and shorter recovery of the magnetization after a current pulse. Abstract: The concept of Space-Time Crystals (STC), i.e. translational symmetry breaking in time and space, was recently proposed and experimentally demonstrated for quantum systems. Here, we transfer this concept to magnons and experimentally demonstrate a driven STC at room temperature. The STC is realized by strong homogeneous micro-wave pumping of a micron-sized permalloy (Py) stripe and is directly imaged by Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM). For a fundamental understanding of the formation of the STC, micromagnetic simulations are carefully adapted to model the experimental findings. Beyond the mere generation of a STC, we observe the formation of a magnonic band structure due to back folding of modes at the STC's Brillouin zone boundaries. We show interactions of magnons with the STC that appear as lattice scattering. This results in the generation of ultra short spin waves down to 100 nm wavelength that cannot be described by classical dispersion relations for linear spin wave excitations. We expect that room temperature STCs will be a useful tool to investigate non-linear wave physics, as they can be easily generated and manipulated to control their spatial and temporal band structure.

Abstract: Spin wave emission and propagation in magnonic waveguides represent a highly promising alternative for beyond-CMOS computing. It is therefore all the more important to fully understand the underlying physics of the emission process. Here, we use time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy to directly image the formation process of the globally excited local emission of spin waves in a permalloy waveguide at the nanoscale. Thereby, we observe spin wave emission from the corner of the waveguide as well as from a local oscillation of a domain-wall-like structure within the waveguide. Additionally, an isofrequency contour analysis is used to fully explain the origin of quasicylindrical spin wave excitation from the corner and its concurrent nonreflection and nonrefraction at the domain interface. This study is complemented by micromagnetic simulations which perfectly fit the experimental findings. Thus, we clarify the fundamental question of the emission mechanisms in magnonic waveguides which lay the basis for future magnonic operations.

Abstract: Analytic and numerical studies on curved magnetic nano-objects predict numerous exciting effects that can be referred to as magneto-chiral effects, which do not originate from intrinsic Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction or interface-induced anisotropies. In constrast, these chiral effects stem from isotropic exchange or dipole-dipole interaction, present in all magnetic materials, which acquire asymmetric contributions in case of curved geometry of the specimen. As a result, for example, the spin-wave dispersion in round magnetic nanotubes becomes asymmetric, namely spin waves of the same frequency propagating in opposite directions along the nanotube exhibit different wavelenghts. Here, using time-resolved scanning transmission X-ray microscopy experiments, standard micromagntic simulations and a dynamic-matrix approach, we show that the spin-wave spectrum undergoes additional drastic changes when transitioning from a continuous to a discrete rotational symmetry, i.e. from round to hexagonal nanotubes, which are much easier to fabricate. The polygonal shape introduces localization of the modes both to the sharp, highly curved corners and flat edges. Moreover, due to the discrete rotational symmetry, the degenerate nature of the modes with azimuthal wave vectors known from round tubes is partly lifted, resulting in singlet and duplet modes. For comparison with our experiments, we calculate the microwave absorption from the numerically obtained mode profiles which shows that a dedicated antenna design is paramount for magnonic applications in 3D nano-structures. To our knowledge these are the first experiments directly showing real space spin-wave propagation in 3D nano objects.
