The idea of using ultrashort X-ray pulses to obtain images of single proteins frozen in time has fascinated and inspired many. It was one of the arguments for building X-ray free-electron lasers. According to theory1, the extremely intense pulses provide sufficient signal to dispense with using crystals as an amplifier, and the ultrashort pulse duration permits capturing the diffraction data before the sample inevitably explodes2. This was first demonstrated on biological samples a decade ago on the giant mimivirus3. Since then a large collaboration4has been pushing the limit of the smallest sample that can be imaged5,6. The ability to capture snapshots on the timescale of atomic vibrations, while keeping the sample at room temperature, may allow probing the entire conformational phase space of macromolecules. Here we show the first observation of an X-ray diffraction pattern from a single protein, that ofEscherichia coliGroEL which at 14 nm in diameter7is the smallest biological sample ever imaged by X-rays, and demonstrate that the concept of diffraction before destruction extends to single proteins. From the pattern, it is possible to determine the approximate orientation of the protein. Our experiment demonstrates the feasibility of ultrafast imaging of single proteins, opening the way to single-molecule time-resolved studies on the femtosecond timescale.

The ideal route of tranexamic acid (TXA) administration in total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remains controversial. This study aims to identify the optima route of TXA administration in THA or TKA.PUBMED, EMBASE, MEDLINE and CENTRAL database were systematically searched until 4 August 2021 for randomised studies that compared intravenous (IV) or intra-articular (IA) administration of TXA in THA or TKA.Sixty-seven studies enrolling 8335 patients (IA: 4162; IV: 4173) were eligible for quantitative and qualitative analysis. Comparable results were demonstrated in the incidence of venous thromboembolisation (OR:0.96, p = 0.84), total blood loss (MD: - 9.05, p = 0.36), drain output (MD: - 7.36, p = 0.54), hidden blood loss (MD: - 6.85, p = 0.47), postoperative haemoglobin level (MD: 0.01, p = 0.91), haemoglobin drop (MD: - 0.10, p = 0.22), blood transfusion rate (OR: 0.99, p = 0.87), total adverse events (OR: 1.12, p = 0.28), postoperative range of motion (MD: 1.08, p = 0.36), postoperative VAS pain score (MD: 0.13, p = 0.24) and postoperative D-dimer level (MD: 0.61, p = 0.64). IV route of TXA administration was associated with significantly longer length of hospital stay compared to IA route of administration (MD: - 0.22, p = 0.01).In this meta-analysis, both IV and IA route of TXA administration were equally effective in managing blood loss and postoperative outcomes in lower limb joints arthroplasty.Level 1. Background: Fretting corrosion at modular junctions contributes to arthroplasty failure. Currently, no evidence-based guidelines are available regarding the acceptable level of trunnion corrosion that can occur in vivo. We aimed to examine the relationship between trunnion corrosion and risk of re-revision to assist surgeons with intraoperative decision making. Method: Grading by 3 independent examiners of revised and re-revised head components was performed using a modified Goldberg corrosion scale. Samples were separated into low-grade (LG) and high-grade (HG) corrosion. Mechanical testing determined the relationship between corrosion severity and pull-off strength at the head-stem junction. Results: 529 retrieved femoral heads were analysed. A positive association was detected between males and HG corrosion (OR 2.07; 95% CI, 1.45–2.94; p Conclusions: A well-fixed stem with corrosion may remain in situ.

Gotthard-II is a charge-integrating microstrip detector developed for experiments and diagnostics at free-electron lasers using hard X-rays of 5 keV - 20 keV. Thanks to its excellent single photon sensitivity, large dynamic range as well as high frame rate of 4.5 MHz in burst mode, its potential scientific applications include X-ray absorption/emission spectroscopy, hard X-ray high resolution single-shot spectrometry (HiREX), beam diagnostics, as well as veto signal generation for pixel detectors. The Gotthard-II ASIC has been designed and fabricated using UMC-110 nm technology. The final ASIC design and performance in terms of noise, linearity, dynamic range, coupling between channels and speed will be discussed in the paper. In addition, a first measurement of an X-ray absorption spectrum of a standard copper sample has been done. The ePix detector family provides multiple variants of hybrid pixel detectors to support a wide range of applications at free electron laser facilities. We present the results of a systematic study of the influence of radiation induced damage on the performance and lifetime of an ePix100a detector module using a direct attenuated beam of the EuXFEL at 9 keV photon energy and an average power of 10 $\mu$W. An area of 20 x 20 pixels was irradiated with an average photon flux of approx. 7 x $10^{9}$ photons/s to a dose of approximately 760$\pm$65 kGy at the location of the Si/SiO$_2$ interfaces in the sensor. A dose dependent increase in both offset and noise of the ePix100a detector have been observed originating from an increase of the sensor leakage current. Moreover, we observed an effect directly after irradiation resulting in the saturation of individual pixels by their dark current. Changes in gain are evaluated one and half hours post irradiation and suggest damage to occur also on the ASIC level. Based on the obtained results, thresholds for beam parameters are deduced and the detector lifetime is estimated with respect to the requirements to the data quality in order to satisfy the scientific standards defined by the experiments. We conclude the detector can withstand a beam with an energy up to 1 $\mu$J at a photon energy of 9 keV impacting on an area of 1 mm$^2$. The detector can be used without significant degradation of its performance for several years if the incident photon beam intensities do not exceed the detector's dynamic range by at least three orders of magnitude. Their property of coupling to photons has inspired different experimental methods for their detection, one of which is the helioscope technique. The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) is the most sensitive helioscope built up to date and has recently published part of the latest data taken with the magnet bores gradually filled with He-3, probing the mass range up to 1.17 eV. The International AXion Observatory (IAXO) is being proposed as a facility where different axion studies can be performed, with the primary goal to study axions coming from the Sun. Designed to maximize sensitivity, it will improve the levels reached by CAST by almost 5 orders of magnitude in signal detection, that is more than one order of magnitude in terms of gay. Here we will summarize the most important aspects of the helioscopes, and focus mainly on IAXO, based on the recent papers [1, 2].

The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL.EU) is a high-intensity X-ray light source currently being commissioned in the area of Hamburg/Schenefeld, Germany, that will provide spatially coherent X-rays in the energy range between 0.25keV and 20keV [1]. The machine will deliver a unique time structure, consisting of up to 2700 pulses, with a 4.5MHz repetition rate, 10 times per second at very high photon fluxes up to 1013, photons per pulse [2]. The LPD [3], [4], DSSC [5], [6] and AGIPD [7] detectors are being developed to provide mega-pixel imaging capabilities at the aforementioned repetition rates for a dynamic range spanning from single photon sensitivity to 104, - 105, photons per pixel. Data analysis of Bragg diffraction experiments relies on localizing and indexing of diffracted X-rays in the detector image. Pixelated, two dimensional X-ray detectors add uncertainty to the localization. The finite pixel size, scattering of diffracted photons in the sensitive sensor layer and the entrance window, and charge diffusion, contribute to a non-trivial signal distributionUsing X-ray Detector Simulation Pipelines (XDSPs) the uncertainty in correct attribution of the point of impact (POI) of diffracted photons on the detector’s pixel matrix is evaluated ovetthe XFEL.EU’s energy range and relevant pixel sizes. We quantify how steeper angles of incidence (AOIs) cause the signal distribution’s center of mass to shift away from the X-ray’s POI. Shifts increase with the photon energy, as far as 255$\mu m$ for E ph =25keV and θ max =50° AOI in our model detector.

The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL.EU) is an international research facility presently under construction in the area of Hamburg, Germany, which will start its operation at the end of 2016 [1]. The superconducting linear accelerator of the facility will deliver electron bunches with an energy of up to 17.5 GeV, arranged in trains of typically 2700 bunches at a repetition rate of 4.5 MHz. Each train will be followed by a gap of 99.4 ms. Spatially coherent X-rays are generated from the electron bunches in a series of undulators based on the Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) process, in three photon beamlines extending over a length of up to 200 m. Each beamline serves two experiments with different scientific goals.

The DSSC (DEPFET Sensor with Signal Compression) is a new instrument with non-linear response and with parallel signal processing (filtering, linear amplification, and 8bit digitization) for all pixels. The DSSC will serve as ultra-fast megapixel imaging detector at the European XFEL (X-ray Free Electron Laser) in Schenefeld, Germany, which began science operation in September this year. In December 2016, at the Variable Polarization XUV Beamline (P04) ofPETRA III, the Synchrotron Radiation Source at DESY in Hamburg, Germany, a prototype ladder system with 128×512 pixels was operated and studied for the first time.The prototype system could be operated and read-out continuously throughout the beamtime. First studies of the performance of the prototype ladder system were performed using the collecteddata. For example, we measured for the first time the system gain for different coarse ASIC gain settings, and studied the dispersion of the gain in a 17×57pixel sensor sub-matrix after using fine ASIC gain settings for gain trimming.

The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL.EU) will provide unprecedented peak brilliance and ultra-short and spatially coherent X-ray pulses in an energy range of 0.25 to 25 keV . The pulse timing structure is unique with a burst of 2700 pulses of 100 fs length at a temporal distance of 220 ns followed by a 99.4 ms gap. To make optimal use of this timing structure and energy range a great variety of detectors are being developed for use at XFEL.EU, including 2D X-ray imaging cameras that are able to detect images at a rate of 4.5 MHz, provide dynamic ranges up to 10$^5$ photons per pulse per pixel under different operating conditions and covering a large range of angular resolution. In order to characterize, commission and calibrate this variety of detectors and for testing of detector prototypes the XFEL.EU detector group is building up an X-ray test laboratory that allows testing of detectors with X-ray photons under conditions that are as similar to the future beam line conditions at the XFEL.EU as is possible with laboratory sources. A total of four test environments provide the infrastructure for detector tests and calibration: two portable setups that utilize low power X-ray sources and radioactive isotopes, a test environment where a commercial high power X-ray generator is in use, and a pulsed X-ray/electron source which will provide pulses as short as 25 ns in XFEL.EU burst mode combined with target anodes of different materials. The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL.EU) will provide every 0.1 s a train of 2700 spatially coherent ultrashort X-ray pulses at 4.5 MHz repetition rate. The Small Quantum Systems (SQS) instrument and the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering instrument (SCS) operate with soft X-rays between 0.5 keV - 6keV. The DEPFET Sensor with Signal Compression (DSSC) detector is being developed to meet the requirements set by these two XFEL.EU instruments. The DSSC imager is a 1 mega-pixel camera able to store up to 800 single-pulse images per train. The so-called ladder is the basic unit of the DSSC detector. It is the single unit out of sixteen identical-units composing the DSSC-megapixel camera, containing all representative electronic components of the full-size system and allows testing the full electronic chain. Each DSSC ladder has a focal plane sensor with 128 x 512 pixels. The read-out ASIC provides full-parallel readout of the sensor pixels. Every read-out channel contains an amplifier and an analog filter, an up-to 9 bit ADC and the digital memory. The ASIC amplifier have a double front-end to allow one to use either DEPFET sensors or Mini-SDD sensors. In the first case, the signal compression is a characteristic intrinsic of the sensor; in the second case, the compression is implemented at the first amplification stage. The goal of signal compression is to meet the requirement of single-photon detection capability and wide dynamic range. In this paper, the DSSC safety-interlock system is introduced. It is designed to keep the DSSC mega-pixel camera in a safe-state. The system is composed of four inter-communicating sub-systems referred here as a master SIB (safety-interlock board) and three partner SIBs. Each SIB monitors and processes 75 temperature sensors mainly located in the focal plane and also distributed inside the camera-head electronics. It monitors the signals from two pressure sensors, one humidity sensor as well as the connectivity to sixteen low-voltage and two high-voltage cables. The master SIB supervises the signals to and from external equipments like the cooling system, pressure gauge, power crates and status information from experimental environment. SIB is an 8-layer printed-circuit board (PCB) with a micro-controller sitting on top as its central processing unit. A decision-matrix software reads the sensor status continuously and determines whether the camera is in a safe state or not. All error and warnings flags are sent to the detector control software framework and the end user directly. These flags are also stored every 100 ms together with the image data. The full SIB sensor data is sent to the back end for offline analysis. A shutdown sequence is initiated by SIB in case of a critical failure. The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL.EU) is currently being commissioned in Schenefeld, Germany. From 2017 onwards it will provide spatially coherent X-rays of energies between 0.25\,keV and 25\,keV with a unique timing structure. One of the detectors foreseen at XFEL.EU for the soft X-ray regime (energies below 6\,keV) is a quasi column-parallel readout FastCCD developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) specifically for the XFEL.EU requirements. Its sensor has 1920$\times$960 pixels of 30\,$\mu$m $\times$30\,$\mu$m size with a beam hole in the middle of the sensor. The camera can be operated in full frame and frame store mode. With the FastCCD a frame rate of up to 120~fps can be achieved, but at XFEL.EU the camera settings are optimized for the 10\,Hz XFEL bunch-mode. The detector has been delivered to XFEL.EU. Intense ion beams from accelerators are now available to generate high energy density matter and to study astrophysical phenomena in the laboratory under controlled and reproducible conditions. A detailed understanding of interaction phenomena of intense ion- and laser radiation with matter is important for a large number of applications in different fields of science, extending from basic research of plasma properties to application in energy science and the investigation of processes occurring in stellar atmospheres or even in the interior of stars and planets. Energy loss processes of heavy ions in plasma and cold matter are important for the generation of high energy density states in general and especially in the hot dense plasma of an inertial fusion target. Of special interest are phase transitions and the associated time scales when matter passes the warm dense matter regime of the phase diagram at high density but relatively low temperature. We present an overview on recent results and developments of beam plasma, and beam matter interaction processes studied with heavy ion beams and laser beams combined with accelerator and nuclear physics technology. A natural example of hot dense plasma is provided by our neighbouring star the sun, and allows a deep insight into the physics of fusion, the properties of matter at high energy density, and is moreover an excellent laboratory for astroparticle physics. As such the sun’s interior plasma can even be used to probe the existence of novel particles and dark matter candidates with a combination of equipment and methods from accelerator technology and high resolution plasma spectroscopy.

The DEPFET Sensor with Signal Compression (DSSC) will be a 2d 1Mpx imaging detector for the European X-ray Free Electron Laser facility (XFEL.EU), that is currently under construction in Hamburg. The DSSC is foreseen as a photon counting detector for soft X-ray radiation from 0.5 keV up to 6 keV. Driven by its scientific requirements, the design goals of the detector system are foremost low noise, a high dynamic range and a high frame rate of up to 4.5 MHz. Signal compression, amplification and digitization will be performed in the focal plane. Utilizing an in-pixel active filtering stage and an 8/9-bit ADC, the detector will provide parallel readout of all pixels. A critical step of calibrating the detector is the determination of the system gain and offset based on peak energies of X-ray calibration line sources such as 55 Fe. This is demanding due to the intrinsically low spectral resolution of the DSSC. The results of studies on the stability and performance of automated procedures for peak fitting in single pixel spectra with a low energy resolution were presented on a poster.

The DSSC (DEPFET Sensor with Signal Compression) is a new instrument with non-linear compression of the input signal and with parallel signal processing (filtering, linear amplification, and 8/9-bit digitization) for all pixels. The DSSC will serve as ultra-fast 2d megapixel imaging detector at the European XFEL (X-ray Free Electron Laser) currently under construction in Hamburg, Germany. The DSSC design goal is to achieve at the same time single photon detection and high dynamic range of about 104 photons, both for photon energies down to 0.5 keV and read-out speeds up to 4.5 MHz. Realization of this goal requires an accurate calibration of the non-linear system characteristic (NLSC) over the full dynamic range of the detector. The NLSC describes the relation between the signal charge collected in a sensor pixel and the respective digital output of the DSSC system, and must be determined for each of the 1024 × 1024 DSSC pixels. We report results from a set of measurements aimed at calibrating the NLSC of a single DSSC prototype pixel for photon energies of about 0.5 and 1 keV using 55 Fe as X-ray line source. In addition, a 109Cd source was used for independent calibration and verification. For further independent verification, we compared the DSSC prototype results to measurements performed with an external test bench providing 14-bit resolution.

The European X-ray Free Electron Laser is a high-intensity X-ray light source currently being constructed in the Hamburg region that will provide spatially coherent X-rays in the energy range between 0.25 keV–25 keV. The LPD, DSSC and AGIPD detectors are being developed to provide megapixel imaging capabilities with a dynamic range spanning from single photon sensitivity to 105 photons per pixel. Calibration of these detectors is challenging as a large set of calibration parameters (up to 109) exist. To provide a drop-in replacement for measured megapixel detector data, the X-ray Camera Simulation Toolkit (X-CSIT) has been developed. Based on X-CSIT, a X-ray detector simulation pipeline (XDSP) has been assembled to simulate a realistic detector response at a given experimental configuration. Validation of XDSPs have been performed and an XDSP for the SPB/SFX imaging experiment based on calibration data of an AGIPD module has been implemented and integrated into the experiment's start-to-end simulation framework simS2E.

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) searches for a -> gamma conversion in the 9 T magnetic field of a refurbished LHC test magnet that can be directed toward the Sun. Two parallel magnet bores can be filled with helium of adjustable pressure to match the x-ray refractive mass m(gamma) to the axion search mass m(a). After the vacuum phase (2003-2004), which is optimal for m(a) less than or similar to 0.02 eV, we used He-4 in 2005-2007 to cover the mass range of 0.02-0.39 eV and He-3 in 2009-2011 to scan from 0.39 to 1.17 eV. After improving the detectors and shielding, we returned to He-4 in 2012 to investigate a narrow m(a) range around 0.2 eV ("candidate setting" of our earlier search) and 0.39-0.42 eV, the upper axion mass range reachable with He-4, to "cross the axion line" for the KSVZ model. We have improved the limit on the axion-photon coupling to g(a gamma) < 1.47 x 10(-10) GeV-1 (95% C.L.), depending on the pressure settings. Since 2013, we have returned to the vacuum and aim for a significant increase in sensitivity.

A new, modular toolkit for creating simulations of 2D X-ray pixel detectors, X-CSIT (X-ray Camera SImulation Toolkit), is being developed. The toolkit uses three sequential simulations of detector processes which model photon interactions, electron charge cloud spreading with a high charge density plasma model and common electronic components used in detector readout. In addition, because of the wide variety in pixel detector design, X-CSIT has been designed as a modular platform so that existing functions can be modified or additional functionality added if the specific design of a detector demands it. X-CSIT will be used to create simulations of the detectors at the European XFEL, including three bespoke 2D detectors: the Adaptive Gain Integrating Pixel Detector (AGIPD), Large Pixel Detector (LPD) and DePFET Sensor with Signal Compression (DSSC). These simulations will be used by the detector group at the European XFEL for detector characterisation and calibration. For this purpose, X-CSIT has been integrated into the European XFEL's software framework, Karabo. This will further make it available to users to aid with the planning of experiments and analysis of data. Our simulations show that the new accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) at GSI as well as beams from the CERN large hadron collider (LHC) will vastly extend the accessible parameter range for high energy density states. A natural example of hot dense plasma is provided by our neighbouring star the sun, and allows a deep insight into the physics of fusion, the properties of matter at high energy density, and is moreover an excellent laboratory for astroparticle physics. As such the sun's interior plasma can even be used to probe the existence of novel particles and dark matter candidates. We present an overview on recent results and developments of dense plasma physics addressed with heavy ion and laser beams combined with accelerator- and nuclear physics technology.

The SIS-18 heavy ion synchrotron at GSI now routinely delivers intense Uranium beams that deposit about I kJ/g of specific energy in solid matter, e.g. solid lead. Due to the specific nature of the ion-matter interaction a volume of matter is heated uniformly with low gradients of temperature and pressure in the initial phase, depending on the pulse structure of the beam with respect to space and time. The new accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and ion Research) at GSI as well as beams from the CERN large hadron collider (LHC) will vastly extend the accessible parameter range for high energy density states. One special piece of accelerator equipment a superconducting high field dipole magnet, developed for the LHC at CERN is now serving as a key instrument to diagnose the dense plasma of the sun interior plasma, thus providing an extremely interesting combination of accelerator physics, plasma physics and astro-particle physics.

Detailed theoretical studies have shown that intense heavy-ion beams that will be generated at the future Facility for Antiprotons and Ion Research (FAIR) (Henning 2004 Nucl. Instrum. Methods B 214 211) at Darmstadt will be a very efficient tool to create high-energy-density (HED) states in matter including strongly coupled plasmas. In this paper we show, with the help of two-dimensional numerical simulations, the interesting physical states that can be achieved considering different beam intensities using zinc as a test material. Another very interesting experiment that can be performed using the intense heavy-ion beam at FAIR will be generation of low-entropy compression of a test material such as hydrogen that is enclosed in a cylindrical shell of a high-Z material such as lead or gold. In such an experiment, one can study the problem of hydrogen metallization and the interiors of giant planets. Moreover, we discuss an interesting method to diagnose the HED matter that is at the centre of the Sun. We have also carried out simulations to study the damage caused by the full impact of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beam on a superconducting magnet. An interesting outcome of this study is that the LHC beam can induce HED states in matter.

Interaction phenomena of intense ion and laser radiation with matter have a large range of application in different fields of science, from basic research of plasma properties to application in energy science. The hot dense plasma of our neighbouring star the Sun provides a deep insight into the physics of fusion, the properties of matter at high energy density, and is moreover an excellent laboratory for astroparticle physics. As such the Sun's interior plasma can even be used to probe the existence of novel particles and dark matter candidates. We present an overview on recent results and developments of dense plasma physics addressed with heavy ion and laser beams combined with accelerator and nuclear physics technology.

We present the analysis of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of the turn-on phase of a 35 day cycle of the X-ray binary Her X-1. During the early phases of the turn-on, the energy spectrum is composed of X-rays scattered into the line of sight plus heavily absorbed X-rays. The energy spectra in the 3-17 keV range can be described by a partial covering model, where one of the components is influenced by photoelectric absorption and Thomson scattering in cold material plus an iron emission line at 6.5 keV. In this paper we show the evolution of spectral parameters as well as the evolution of the pulse profile during the turn-on. We describe this evolution using Monte Carlo simulations which self-consistently describe the evolution of the X-ray pulse profile and of the energy spectrum., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST), a 10 meter long LHC, 9 Tesla, test magnet is mounted on a moving platform that tracks the sun about 1.5 hours during sunrise, again during sunset. It moves ±8 0 vertically and ±40 0 horizontally. It has been taking data continuously since July 10, 2003. Data analyzed thus far yield an upper bound on the photon-axion coupling constant, g aγγ ⩽ 3 × 10 −10 GeV −1 for axion masses less than 5 × 10 −2 eV.

We present a 200 ksec observation of the High Mass X-ray Binary GX 301–2 taken in 2000 November with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer during the pre-periastron flare and the actual periastron passage of the neutron star. To model the spectrum we use a power law with the Fermi Dirac cutoff and a cyclotron line at higher energies plus either a reflection component or a heavily absorbed partial covering component. Although completely different, both models describe the data equally well. Phase resolved spectra show that the energy and the depth of the cyclotron resonant scattering feature vary strongly with pulse phase: It is deepest in the fall of the main pulse, the rise of the secondary pulse, and the pulse minimum in-between with τC∼0.3. In the other phase bins the line is much less deep with τC∼0.1. The energy of the line correlates strongly with its depth and varies by 25 % from 30.1 keV in the fall of the secondary pulse to 37.9 keV in the fall of the main pulse.

An X-ray mirror telescope consisting of a Wolter I type mirror assembly as used in X-ray astronomy and a new type X-ray CCD has been added to the CERN Axion Solar Telescope experiment. It will strongly improve the sensitivity in the search for axions, a so far elusive particle. The axion is predicted in order to explain the observed CP conservation in strong interaction which is not expected within the generally accepted “standard model”. Construction and performance of the X-ray telescope are described. An improvement by two orders of magnitude in the signal over background S/B event ratio is estimated.

This document briefly summarizes the status of an ongoing project concerning the assessment, validation, improvement and documentation of physics models for electron-photon transport relevant to multi-disciplinary experimental applications, including medical imaging simulation. Recent results on Geant4 electron backscattering validation are summarized. More extensive documentation can be found in dedicated publications in IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science.

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope has finished its search for solar axions with He-3 buffer gas, covering the search range 0.64 eV less than or similar to ma less than or similar to 1.17 eV. This closes the gap to the cosmological hot dark matter limit and actually overlaps with it. From the absence of excess x rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of g(a gamma) less than or similar to 3.3 x 10(-10) GeV-1 at 95% C.L., with the exact value depending on the pressure setting. Future direct solar axion searches will focus on increasing the sensitivity to smaller values of g(a gamma), for example by the currently discussed next generation helioscope International AXion Observatory.

The European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) consortium has provided the focal plane instruments for the three X-ray mirror systems on XMM-Newton. Two cameras with a reflecting grating spectrometer in the optical path are equipped with MOS type CCDs as focal plane detectors (Turner 2001), the telescope with the full photon flux operates the novel pn-CCD as an imaging X-ray spectrometer. The pn-CCD camera system was developed under the leadership of the Max-Planck-Institut fur extraterrestrische Physik (MPE), Garching. The concept of the pn-CCD is described as well as the dierent operational modes of the camera system. The electrical, mechanical and thermal design of the focal plane and camera is briefly treated. The in-orbit performance is described in terms of energy resolution, quantum eciency, time resolution, long term stability and charged particle background. Special emphasis is given to the radiation hardening of the devices and the measured and expected degradation due to radiation damage of ionizing particles in the rst 9 months of in orbit operation.

We present XMM-Newton observations of the high redshift z=3.104, radio-loud quasar PKS 0537-286. The EPIC CCD cameras provide the highest signal-to-noise spectrum of a high-z quasar to date. The EPIC observations show that PKS 0537-286 is extremely X-ray luminous (Lx=2x10^47 erg/s), with an unusually hard X-ray spectrum (Gamma=1.27+/-0.02). The flat power-law emission extends over the whole observed energy range; there is no evidence of intrinsic absorption, which has been claimed in PKS 0537-286 and other high z quasars. However, there is evidence for weak Compton reflection. A redshifted iron K line, observed at 1.5 keV - corresponding to 6.15 keV in the quasar rest frame - is detected at 95% confidence. If confirmed, this is the most distant iron K line known. The line equivalent width is small (33eV), consistent with the `X-ray Baldwin effect' observed in other luminous quasars. The reflected continuum is also weak (R=0.25). We find the overall spectral energy distribution of PKS 0537-286 is dominated by the X-ray emission, which, together with the flat power-law and weak reflection features, suggests that the X-radiation from PKS 0537-286 is dominated by inverse Compton emission associated with a face-on relativistic jet., Comment: 6 pages, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters

The CAST Experiment commenced its first phase of solar axion-searching in 2003, and ran successfully for two years. In the transverse field of a decommissioned Large Hadron Collider (LHC) test magnet (9.26m, 9T), the CERN Axion Solar Telescope intends to transform axions -that would be produced in the sun- into X-rays with energies of a few keV. The first results from the analysis of the data taken in 2003 show no signature of axions, implying an upper limit to the axion-photon coupling gaγ ≤ 1.16 × 10−10 GeV−1 at 95% C.L. for ma < 0.02 eV, already a factor 100 better than previous searches. In Phase I the twin bores of the magnet were kept in vacuum. In Phase II (due to start in November 2005) the bores of the magnet will be filled with a buffer gas, which will allow CAST to explore the region of higher axion masses.

Several models for the Monte Carlo simulation of Compton scattering on electrons are quantitatively evaluated with respect to a large collection of experimental data retrieved from the literature. Some of these models are currently implemented in general purpose Monte Carlo systems; some have been implemented and evaluated for possible use in Monte Carlo particle transport for the first time in this study. The detectors to be use at the European XFEL have to deal with the unique time structure of the machine, delivering up to 2700 pulses, with a repetition rate of 4.5 MHz, ten times per second, the very high photon flux of up to 1012 photons/pulse and the need to combine single-photon sensitivity and a large dynamic range. These machine properties present a challenge for the large-are 2D imaging detectors to be used at European XFEL. In order to thoroughly characterize the detectors, optimize their performance and the required calibration concepts, as well as give estimates of the expected scientific performance in a wide range of experimental scenarios, we are currently pursuing different simulation projects.

The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL.EU) will provide as-yet-unrivaled peak brilliance and ultra-short pulses of spatially coherent X-rays with a pulse length of less than 100 fs in the energy range between 0.25 and 25 keV. The high radiation intensity and ultra-short pulse duration will open a window for novel scientific techniques and will allow to explore new phenomena in biology, chemistry, material science, as well as matter at high energy density, atomic, ion and molecular physics. The variety of scientific applications and especially the unique XFEL.EU time structure require adequate instrumentation to be developed in order to exploit the full potential of the light source. To make optimal use of the unprecedented capabilities of the European XFEL and master these vast technological challenges, the European XFEL GmbH has started a detector R&D program. The technology concepts of the detector system presently under development are complementary in their performance and will cover the requirements of a large fraction of the scientific applications envisaged for the XFEL.EU facility. The actual status of the detector development projects which includes ultra-fast 2D imaging detectors, low repetition rate 2D detectors as well as strip detectors for e.g. spectroscopy applications and the infrastructure for the detectors' calibration and tests will be presented. In non-hadronic axion models, which have a tree-level axion-electron interaction, the Sun produces a strong axion flux by bremsstrahlung, Compton scattering, and axio-recombination, the "BCA processes." Based on a new calculation of this flux, including for the first time axio-recombination, we derive limits on the axion-electron Yukawa coupling g_ae and axion-photon interaction strength g_ag using the CAST phase-I data (vacuum phase). For m_a < 10 meV/c2 we find g_ag x g_ae< 8.1 x 10^-23 GeV^-1 at 95% CL. We stress that a next-generation axion helioscope such as the proposed IAXO could push this sensitivity into a range beyond stellar energy-loss limits and test the hypothesis that white-dwarf cooling is dominated by axion emission. Radioactive decays are of concern in a wide variety of applications using Monte-Carlo simulations. In order to properly estimate the quality of such simulations, knowledge of the accuracy of the decay simulation is required. We present a validation of the original Geant4 Radioactive Decay Module, which uses a per-decay sampling approach, and of an extended package for Geant4-based simulation of radioactive decays, which, in addition to being able to use a refactored per-decay sampling, is capable of using a statistical sampling approach. The validation is based on measurements of calibration isotope sources using a high purity Germanium (HPGe) detector; no calibration of the simulation is performed. For the considered validation experiment equivalent simulation accuracy can be achieved with per-decay and statistical sampling.

The simulation of radioactive decays is a common task in Monte-Carlo systems such as Geant4. Usually, a system either uses an approach focusing on the simulations of every individual decay or an approach which simulates a large number of decays with a focus on correct overall statistics. The radioactive decay package presented in this work permits, for the first time, the use of both methods within the same simulation framework - Geant4. The accuracy of the statistical approach in our new package, RDM-extended, and that of the existing Geant4 per-decay implementation (original RDM), which has also been refactored, are verified against the ENSDF database. The new verified package is beneficial for a wide range of experimental scenarios, as it enables researchers to choose the most appropriate approach for their Geant4-based application.

A MHz frame rate X-ray area detector (LPD — Large Pixel Detector) is under development by the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory for the European XFEL. The detector will have 1 million pixels and allows analogue storage of 512 images taken at 4.5 MHz in the detector front end. The LPD detector has 500 μm thick silicon sensor tiles that are bump bonded to a readout ASIC. The ASIC's preamplifier provides relatively low noise at high speed which results in a high dynamic range of 105 photons over an energy range of 5–20 keV. Small scale prototypes of 32 × 256 pixels (LPD 2-Tile detector) and 256 × 256 pixels (LPD supermodule detector) are now available for X-ray tests. The performance of prototypes of the detector is reported for first tests under synchrotron radiation (PETRA III at DESY) and Free-Electron-Laser radiation (LCLS at SLAC). The initial performance of the detector in terms of signal range and noise, radiation hardness and spatial and temporal response are reported. The main result is that the 4.5 MHz sampling detection chain is reliably working, including the analogue on-chip memory concept. The detector is at least radiation hard up to 5 MGy at 12 keV. In addition the multiple gain concept has been demonstrated over a dynamic range to 104 at 12 keV with a readout noise equivalent to < 1 photon rms in its most sensitive mode.

We present the development and prototype test of the LPD instrument, a novel pixel detector for the European XFEL. At XFEL the LPD detector must be capable of operating with a frame rate of 4.5MHz and record images with a dynamic range of 1:100,000 photons (12keV) whilst maintaining low noise. The prototype LPD system has a large in pixel memory depth of 512 images that can be selected with a flexible veto system. Data is then transferred off the detector head in between XFEL pulses with an accompanying high rate data acquisition system. The system has been prototyped and assembled into an LPD detector head that contains custom silicon sensors and ASICs as well as a programmable data acquisition cards and supporting electronics and mechanics. A second version of the ASIC has also been submitted for manufacture. The experiences with our first prototype are presented.

Ongoing investigations for the improvement of Geant4 accuracy and computational performance resulting by refactoring and reengineering parts of the code are discussed. Issues in refactoring that are specific to the domain of physics simulation are identified and their impact is elucidated. Preliminary quantitative results are reported., To be published in the Proc. The astroparticle physics experiment CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) aims to detect hypothetical axions or axion-like particles produced in the Sun by the Primakoff process. A Large Hadron Collider (LHC) prototype superconducting dipole magnet provides a 9 T transverse magnetic field for the conversion of axions into detectable X-ray photons. These photons are detected with an X-ray telescope and a novel type of frame-store CCD detector built from radio-pure materials, installed in the optics focal plane. A novel type of cooling system has been designed and built based on krypton-filled cryogenic heat pipes, made out of oxygen-free radiopure copper, and a Stirling cryocooler as cold source. The heat pipes provide an efficient thermal coupling between the cryocooler and the CCD which is kept at stable temperatures between 150 and 230 K within an accuracy of 0.1 K. A graded-Z radiation shield, also serving as a gas cold-trap operated at 120 K, is implemented to reduce the surface contamination of the CCD window and suppress background radiation.

Arık, Metin (Dogus Author) -- The conference paper was firstly submitted to 12th International Conference on Topics in Astroparticle and Underground Physics. The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) is currently the most sensitive axion helioscope designed to search for axions produced by the Primakoff process in the solar core. CAST is using a Large Hadron Collider (LHC) test magnet where axions could be converted into X-rays with energies up to 10 keV. During the phase I, the experiment operated with vacuum inside the magnet bores and covered axion masses up to 0.02 eV. In the phase II, the magnet bores were filled with a buffer gas (first 4He and later 3He) at various densities in order to extend the sensitivity to higher axion masses (up to f .18 eV). The phase II data taking was completed in 2011. So far, no evidence of axion signal has been found and CAST set the most restrictive experimental limit on the axion-photon coupling constant over a broad range of axion masses. The latest CAST results with 3He data in the mass range 0.39 eV < m a < 0.64 eV will be presented.
