The Winchcombe meteorite fell on 28th February 2021 in Gloucestershire, UK. As the most accurately recorded carbonaceous chondrite fall, the Winchcombe meteorite is an opportunity to link a tangible sample of known chemical constitution to a specific region of the solar system whose chemistry can only be otherwise predicted or observed remotely. Winchcombe is a CM carbonaceous chondrite, a group known for their rich and varied abiotic organic chemistry. The rapid collection of Winchcombe provides an opportunity to study a relatively terrestrial contaminant-limited meteoritic organic assemblage. The majority of the organic matter in CM chondrites is macromolecular in nature and we have performed non-destructive and destructive analyses of Winchcombe by Raman spectroscopy, online pyrolysis-gas chromatography (pyrolysis-GC-MS), and stepped combustion. The Winchcombe pyrolysis products were consistent with a CM chondrite, namely aromatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, sulfur-containing units including thiophenes, oxygen containing units such as phenols and furans, and nitrogen-containing units such as pyridine; many substituted/alkylated forms of these units were also present. The presence of phenols in the online pyrolysis products indicated only limited influence from aqueous alteration, which can deplete the phenol precursors in the macromolecule when aqueous alteration is extensive. Raman spectroscopy and stepped combustion also generated responses consistent with a CM chondrite. The pyrolysis-GC-MS data is likely to reflect the more labile and thermally sensitive portions of the macromolecular materials while the Raman and stepped combustion data will also reflect the more refractory and non-pyrolyzable component, hence we accessed the complete macromolecular fraction of the recently fallen Winchcombe meteorite and revealed a chemical constitution that is similar to other meteorites of the CM group.

Fusion crusts form during the atmospheric entry heating of meteorites and preserve a record of the conditions that occurred during deceleration in the atmosphere. The fusion crust of the Winchcombe meteorite closely resembles that of other stony meteorites, and in particular CM2 chondrites, since it is dominated by olivine phenocrysts set in a glassy mesostasis with magnetite, and is highly vesicular. Dehydration cracks are unusually abundant in Winchcombe. Failure of this weak layer is an additional ablation mechanism to produce large numbers of particles during deceleration, consistent with the observation of pulses of plasma in videos of the Winchcombe fireball. Calving events might provide an observable phenomenon related to meteorites that are particularly susceptible to dehydration. Oscillatory zoning is observed within olivine phenocrysts in the fusion crust, in contrast to other meteorites, perhaps owing to temperature fluctuations resulting from calving events. Magnetite monolayers are found in the crust, and have also not been previously reported, and form discontinuous strata. These features grade into magnetite rims formed on the external surface of the crust and suggest the trapping of surface magnetite by collapse of melt. Magnetite monolayers may be a feature of meteorites that undergo significant degassing. Silicate warts with dendritic textures were observed and are suggested to be droplets ablated from another stone in the shower. They, therefore, represent the first evidence for intershower transfer of ablation materials and are consistent with the other evidence in the Winchcombe meteorite for unusually intense gas loss and ablation, despite its low entry velocity. Observation of dust and debris in the near Earth environment is a field of great commercial and scientific interest, vital to maximising the operational and commercial life-cycle of satellites and reducing risk to increasing numbers of astronauts in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). To this end, monitoring and assessment of the flux of particles is of paramount importance to the space industry and wider socio-economic interests that depend upon data products/services from orbital infrastructure. We have designed a passive space dust detector to investigate the dust environment in LEO—the Orbital Dust Impact Experiment (ODIE). ODIE is designed for deployment in LEO for ∼1 year, whereupon it would be returned to Earth for analysis of impact features generated by dust particles. The design emphasises the ability to distinguish between the orbital debris (OD) relating to human space activity and the naturally occurring micrometeoroid (MM) population at millimetre to submillimetre scales. ODIE is comprised of multiple Kapton foils, which have shown great potential to effectively preserve details of the impacting particles’ size and chemistry, with residue chemistry being used to interpret an origin (OD vs. MM). LEO is a harsh environment—the highly erosive effects of atomic oxygen damage Kapton foil—requiring the use of a protective coating. Common coatings available for Kapton (e.g., Al, SiO2, etc.) are problematic for subsequent analysis and interpretation of OD vs. MM origin, being a common elemental component of MM or OD, or having X-ray emission peaks overlapping with those of elements used to distinguish MM from OD. We thus propose palladium coatings as an alternative for this application. Here we report on the performance of palladium as a protective coating for a Kapton-based passive dust detector when exposed to atomic oxygen and impact. The plumes naturally erupting from the icy satellite Enceladus were sampled by the Cassini spacecraft in high-speed fly-bys, which gave evidence of salt. This raises the question of how salt behaves under high-speed impact, and how it can best be sampled in future missions to such plumes. We present the results of 35 impacts onto aluminum targets by a variety of salts (NaCl, NaHCO3, MgSO4, and MgSO4·7H2O) at speeds from 0.26 to 7.3 km s−1. Using SEM-EDX, identifiable projectile residue was found in craters at all speeds. It was possible to distinguish NaCl and NaHCO3 from each other, and from the magnesium sulfates, but not to separate the hydrous from anhydrous magnesium sulfates. Raman spectroscopy on the magnesium sulfates and NaHCO3 residues failed to find a signal at low impact speeds (

The presence and accessibility of a sub‐ice‐surface saline ocean at Enceladus, together with geothermal activity and a rocky core, make it a compelling location to conduct further, in‐depth, astrobiological investigations to probe for organic molecules indicative of extraterrestrial life. Cryovolcanic plumes in the south polar region of Enceladus enable the use of remote in situ sampling and analysis techniques. However, efficient plume sampling and the transportation of captured organic materials to an organic analyzer present unique challenges for an Enceladus mission. A systematic study, accelerating organic ice‐particle simulants into soft inert metal targets at velocities ranging 0.5–3.0 km s−1, was carried out using a light gas gun to explore the efficacy of a plume capture instrument. Capture efficiency varied for different metal targets as a function of impact velocity and particle size. Importantly, organic chemical compounds remained chemically intact in particles captured at speeds up to ~2 km s−1. Calibration plots relating the velocity, crater, and particle diameter were established to facilitate future ice‐particle impact experiments where the size of individual ice particles is unknown.

Impacts are prevalent in the solar system and have played a profound role in the evolution of the solar system bodies. The delivery of prebiotic compounds through impact events is thought to be a crucial step in developing habitable conditions on a planetary surface. Impact events are, therefore, significant in our understanding of the origins of life on Earth or elsewhere. Previous studies have reported the role of the impact process in the abiotic synthesis of building blocks of life, such as amino acids [1-3] and peptides [4, 5]. Here, we report the results of an experimental investigation simulating hypervelocity impacts in the laboratory on an icy mixture of amino acids. Various batches of amino acid mixtures within water ice targets, mimicking the icy bodies (140 K), were prepared and a spherical bullet of size 1 mm was fired at a speed of approximately 5 km s-1 using the light gas gun facility at the University of Kent [6]. Extremely high pressure of 10’s of gigapascals is achieved within a very short time scale as might be expected to be achieved under impact-induced shock conditions. After the impact, the ejected material from the target was collected and analyzed. When these ejecta was subjected to a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis, it revealed ordered structures with interesting morphological features. A SEM micrograph of amino acid glutamine ejecta consisting of dendritic patterns is shown in Figure 1. LCMS analysis of ejecta residue shows that long polypeptide is synthesized as a result of impact. The ability of shocked amino acids to form polypeptides assembled in the form of complex macroscale structures provides evidence for the evolution of the building blocks of life under impact-shock conditions. Peptides play a crucial role in the origin of life because of their unique architecture and self-assembling properties [7] and thus, prebiotic availability of peptides is believed to be crucial for the origin of life. The present results provide another step in the elucidation of our understanding of the role played by complex molecules and impact events in the origin of life. References 1. The ability of tardigrades to survive impact shocks in the kilometer per second and gigapascal range was investigated. When rocks impact planetary surfaces, the impact speeds and shock pressures are in the kilometer per second and gigapascal range. This investigation tested whether tardigrades can survive in impacts typical of those that occur naturally in the Solar System. We found that they can survive impacts up to 0.9 km s-1, which is equivalent to 1.14 GPa shock pressure, but cannot survive impacts above this. This is significantly less than the static pressure limit and has implications for tardigrade survival in panspermia models. The potential survival of tardigrades in impacts of terrestrial impact ejecta on the Moon is shown to be impossible for the average lunar impact speed of such ejecta. However, a notable fraction (around 40%) of such ejecta impact at vertical speeds low enough to permit survival. Similarly, martian impact ejecta striking Phobos, for example, at a typical im�pact speed will not permit viable transfer of tardigrade-like organisms, but if a fraction of such material had a lower impact speed, survival may be possible. We also consider the implications of this for the collection of viable samples by spacecraft transiting the plumes of icy water worlds such as Europa and Enceladus. We have found the limit on survival of shocks to be around 1 GPa, which is instrumental in determining appropriate mission scenarios and collection methods for the acquisition of viable materials.

The decade of the 2020s promises to be when humanity returns to space beyond Earth orbit, with several nations trying to place astronauts on the Moon, before going further into deep space. As part of such a programme, NASA and partner organisations, propose to build a Deep Space Gateway in lunar orbit by the mid-2020s. This would be visited regularly and offer a platform for science as well as for human activity. Payloads that can be mounted externally on the Gateway offer the chance to, amongst other scientific goals, monitor and observe the dust flux in the vicinity of the Moon. This paper looks at relevant technologies to measure dust which will impact the exposed surface at high speed. Flux estimates and a model payload of detectors are described. It is predicted that the flux is sufficient to permit studies of cometary vs. asteroidal dust and their composition, and to sample interstellar dust streams. This may also be the last opportunity to measure the natural dust flux near the Moon before the current, relatively pristine environment, is contaminated by debris, as humanity’s interest in the Moon generates increased activity in that vicinity in coming decades. Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are found throughout the universe. The ubiquity of these organic molecules means that they are of considerable interest in the context of cosmic dust, which typically travels at hypervelocities (>1 km s–1) within our solar system. However, studying such fast-moving micrometer-sized particles in laboratory-based experiments requires suitable synthetic mimics. Herein, we use ball-milling to produce microparticles of anthracene, which is the simplest member of the PAH family. Size control can be achieved by varying the milling time in the presence of a suitable anionic commercial polymeric dispersant (Morwet D-425). These anthracene microparticles are then coated with a thin overlayer of polypyrrole (PPy), which is an air-stable organic conducting polymer. The uncoated and PPy-coated anthracene microparticles are characterized in terms of their particle size, surface morphology, and chemical structure using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, laser diffraction, aqueous electrophoresis, FT-IR spectroscopy, Raman microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, such microparticles can be accelerated up to hypervelocities using a light gas gun. Finally, studies of impact craters indicate carbon debris, so they are expected to serve as the first synthetic mimic for PAH-based cosmic dust.

Results are presented for the fragmentation of projectiles in laboratory experiments. 1.5 mm cubes and spheres of basalt and shale were impacted onto water at normal incidence and speeds from 0.39 to 6.13 km s−1; corresponding to peak shock pressures 0.7–32 GPa. Projectile fragments were collected and measured (over 100,000 fragments in some impacts, at sizes down to 10 µm). Power laws were fitted to the cumulative fragment size distributions and the evolution of the exponent vs. impact speed and peak shock pressure found. The gradient of each of these power laws increased with increasing impact speed/peak shock pressure. The percentage of the projectiles recovered in the impacts was found and used to estimate projectile remnant survival in different solar system impact scenarios at the mean impact speed appropriate to that scenario. For Pluto, the Moon and in the asteroid belt approximately 55%, 40% and 15%, respectively, of an impactor could survive and be recovered at an impact site. Finally, the catastrophic disruption energy densities of basalt and shale were measured and found to be 24 × 104 J kg−1 and 9 × 104 J kg−1, respectively, a factor of ∼2.5 difference. These corresponded to peak shock pressures of 1 to 1.5 GPa (basalt), and 0.8 GPa (shale). This is for near normal-incidence impacts where tensile strength is dominant. For shallow angle impacts we suggest shear effects dominate, resulting in lower critical energy densities and peak shock pressures. We also determine a method to ascertain information about fragment sizes in solar system impact events using a known size of impactor. The results are used to predict projectile fragments sizes for the Veneneia and Rheasilvia crater forming impacts on Vesta, and similar impacts on Ceres.

The mineralogy of comet 81P/Wild 2 particles, collected in aerogel by the Stardust mission, has been determined using synchrotron Fe-K X-ray absorption spectroscopy with in situ transmission XRD and X-ray fluorescence, plus complementary microRaman analyses. Our investigation focuses on the terminal grains of eight Stardust tracks: C2112,4,170,0,0; C2045,2,176,0,0; C2045,3,177,0,0; C2045,4,178,0,0; C2065,4,187,0,0; C2098,4,188,0,0; C2119,4,189,0,0; and C2119,5,190,0,0. Three terminal grains have been identified as near pure magnetite Fe3O4. The presence of magnetite shows affinities between the Wild 2 mineral assemblage and carbonaceous chondrites, and probably resulted from hydrothermal alteration of the coexisting FeNi and ferromagnesian silicates in the cometary parent body. In order to further explore this hypothesis, powdered material from a CR2 meteorite (NWA 10256) was shot into the aerogel at 6.1 km s?1, using a light-gas gun, and keystones were then prepared in the same way as the Stardust keystones. Using similar analysis techniques to the eight Stardust tracks, a CR2 magnetite terminal grain establishes the likelihood of preserving magnetite during capture in silica aerogel.

Previously it has been shown that diatom fossils embedded in ice could survive impacts at speeds of up to 5 km s −1 and peak shock pressures up to 12 GPa. Here we confirm these results using a different technique, with diatoms carried in liquid water suspensions at impact speeds of 2–6 km s −1 . These correspond to peak shock pressures of 3.8–19.8 GPa. We also report on the results of similar experiments using forams, at impact speeds of 4.67 km s −1 (when carried in water) and 4.73 km s −1 (when carried in ice), corresponding to peak shock pressures of 11.6 and 13.1 GPa respectively. In all cases we again find survival of recognisable fragments, with mean fragment size of order 20–25 µm. We compare our results to the peak shock pressures that ejecta from giant impacts on the Earth would experience if it subsequently impacted the Moon. We find that 98% of impacts of terrestrial ejecta on the Moon would have experienced peak pressures less than 20 GPa if the ejecta were a soft rock (sandstone). This falls to 82% of meteorites if the ejecta were a hard rock (granite). This assumes impacts on a solid lunar surface. If we approximate the surface as a loose regolith, over 99% of the impacts involve peak shock pressures below 20 GPa. Either way, the results show that a significant fraction of terrestrial meteorites impacting the Moon will do so with peak shock pressures which in our experiments permit the survival of recognisable fossil fragments.

NASA’s Stardust mission returned from the comet 81P/Wild2 in 2006 and has yielded a plethora of research looking into the composition and attributes of the comet. The mission itself collected thousands of cometary dust particles as it flew through the coma of the comet at a relative speed of 6.1 km s -1 . This work focuses on one of the most abundant minerals in the solar system – olivine. Previous work has shown capture affects on this mineral in similar impacts to that experienced during the Stardust mission. However, the past work looked into effects on isolated mineral grains which would be a rare occurrence in the Solar System. A more accurate representation of this would be to investigate the capture effects on olivine as a constituent of an assemblage of minerals. Accordingly, here we used samples from the NWA 10256 CR2 carbonaceous chondrite meteorite. This natural sample contains fine grains of olivine, and brings additional issues when analysing the olivine due to limited homogeneity. Shifts in the Raman spectra for olivine, enstatite and hematite were observed after capture due to shock effects. However, this work suggests that olivine may well experience a different shock effect during capture when part of a mineral assemblage as distinct from that experienced by single grains.

Several icy bodies in the outer Solar system have extensive internal oceans. In several bodies the oceans are believed to be so extensive they decouple the interior core from the icy surface. A major evolutionary driver in the Solar System is high speed impacts – which lead to cratering or even disruption of the target body. Here we consider how the presence of an internal ocean modifies the energy density needed to disrupt an icy body with an internal ocean. We find that in laboratory experiments on decimetre scale bodies, the energy density to cause disruption is 16.25 ± 1.35 J kg−1, compared to 18.0 ± 0.7 J kg−1 for solid ice bodies. This suggests that for the purposes of impacts the bodies behave as if a solid with the same density. Predictions of the lifetimes of such icy bodies against impact disruption thus need not take the interior ocean into account.

The use of honeycomb core sandwich panels filled with a shear thickening fluid (STF) as a component of spacecraft micrometeoroid/orbital debris (MMOD) shielding was investigated using hypervelocity impact (HVI) testing. Incorporating a STF into shielding has the potential to reduce damage to the core and the likelihood of back-side facesheet perforation in the event of a HVI. The sandwich panels tested consisted of 1.27 cm thick hexagonal aluminum honeycomb core bonded between 0.064 cm thick aluminum facesheets. The STF displayed a marked rise in viscosity with increasing shear rate above a critical shear rate. It was based on low molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG) and hydrophilic fumed silica. Sandwich panel target specimens filled with the STF were subjected to HVIs by 1 mm diameter stainless steel spheres at nominal temperatures of -80°C or 21°C with nominal impact velocities of 4.8 km/s or 6.8 km/s. Additional specimens filled with PEG only were also impacted for comparison. Visual inspections and X-ray computerized tomography were used to assess impact damage. All of the panels experienced perforation of the impacted facesheet, facesheet bulging, localized delamination, and the formation of a cavity in the damaged core. STF-filled panels sustained significantly less damage than PEG-filled panels. None of the STF-filled panels were completely perforated during impact. In contrast, one of the PEG-filled panels impacted at the peak velocity was perforated. The remaining PEG-filled panel sustained substantially more honeycomb core damage and facesheet-core delamination compared to an analogous STF-filled panel. Sandwich panels filled with the STF provide superior HVI mitigation in comparison to panels filled with a Newtonian fluid (i.e., PEG). These experiments show that incorporation of STFs into MMOD shielding components has the potential to dramatically improve the HVI penetration resistance over a broad range of impact velocities and temperatures.

A model of impact disruption of the bodies with sizes from the laboratory scale to that of an order of 100 km is developed. On the lowermost end of the target size the model is based on the numerous laboratory data related to the mass–velocity distribution of the impact produced fragments. On the minor-planets scale the model is supported by the data related to the largest observed craters on small icy satellites and on some asteroids (Leliwa-Kopystynski, J., Burchell, M.J., Lowen, D. [2008]. Icarus 195, 817–826). The model takes into account the target disruption and the dispersion of the impact produced fragments against the intermolecular forces acting on the surfaces of the contacts of the fragments and against self-gravitation of the target. The head-on collisions of non-rotating and non-porous targets and impactors are considered. The impactor delivers kinetic energy but its mass is neglected in comparison to mass of the target. For this simple case the analytical formulae for specific disruption energy as well as for specific energy of formation of the largest craters are found. They depend on a set of parameters. Of these the most important (i.e. with the greatest influence on the final result) are three rather weakly known parameters. They are: (i) The exponent γ in the distribution function of the fragments. (ii) The characteristic velocity v0 that appears in the velocity distribution of the ejected fragments. (iii) The exponent β in the mass–velocity distribution. The influence of the choice of the numerical values of these parameters on the final results has been studied. Another group of parameters contains the relevant material data. They are: (a) The energy σ of breaking of the intermolecular bonds of the target material per unit of the fragment surface and (b) the density ρ of the target. According to our calculations the transition between the strength regime and the gravitational regime is in the range of the target radius from ∼0.4 km to ∼4 km. This estimate holds within a large range of parameters. An application of the results for impact cratering and/or for disruption of satellites and asteroids requires data concerning the impactor energy. We have considered rocky–rocky impacts (an asteroid on an asteroid) and icy–icy impacts (a satellite impacted by a comet). Hypothetical impacts onto some particular asteroids and satellites are discussed as examples.

Catastrophic disruption is a possible outcome of high-speed collisions in the solar system. The critical energy density Q* (impact energy/mass of the target), which is taken to mark the onset of catastrophic disruption, occurs when the largest intact fragment post-impact is 50% of the original target mass. Studies of Q* usually suppose the target body is a solid, rigid object. However, what if the body has a rigid shell and a hollow interior? Here, hollow ice spheres (a diameter of 19–20 cm with an ice thickness of 2.5–3.6 cm) were impacted at speeds up to ∼5 km s−1. Catastrophic disruption occurred at Q* ∼ 25.5 ± 0.5 J kg−1, greater than that for similar size solid, or water-filled ice spheres (16–18 J kg−1). However, while the Q* value has increased, the actual impact energy associated with the new value of Q* has not, and the change in Q* arises due to the lower mass of the hollow target bodies.

Comet 81P/Wild 2 samples returned by NASA's Stardust mission provide an unequalled opportunity to study the contents of, and hence conditions and processes operating on, comets. They can potentially validate contentious interpretations of cometary infrared spectra and in situ mass spectrometry data: specifically the identification of phyllosilicates and carbonates. However, Wild 2 dust was collected via impact into capture media at ~6 km s−1, leading to uncertainty as to whether these minerals were captured intact, and, if subjected to alteration, whether they remain recognizable. We simulated Stardust Al foil capture conditions using a two‐stage light‐gas gun, and directly compared transmission electron microscope analyses of pre‐ and postimpact samples to investigate survivability of lizardite and cronstedtite (phyllosilicates) and calcite (carbonate). We find the phyllosilicates do not survive impact as intact crystalline materials but as moderately to highly vesiculated amorphous residues lining resultant impact craters, whose bulk cation to Si ratios remain close to that of the impacting grain. Closer inspection reveals variation in these elements on a submicron scale, where impact‐induced melting accompanied by reducing conditions (due to the production of oxygen scavenging molten Al from the target foils) has resulted in the production of native silicon and Fe‐ and Fe‐Si‐rich phases. In contrast, large areas of crystalline calcite are preserved within the calcite residue, with smaller regions of vesiculated, Al‐bearing calcic glass. Unambiguous identification of calcite impactors on Stardust Al foil is therefore possible, while phyllosilicate impactors may be inferred from vesiculated residues with appropriate bulk cation to Si ratios. Finally, we demonstrate that the characteristic textures and elemental distributions identifying phyllosilicates and carbonates by transmission electron microscopy can also be observed by state‐of‐the‐art scanning electron microscopy providing rapid, nondestructive initial mineral identifications in Stardust residues.

The SMART-1 end-of-life impact with the lunar surface was simulated with impacts in a two stage light-gas gun onto inclined basalt targets with a shallow surface layer of sand. This simulated the probable impact site, where a loose regolith will have overlaid a well consolidated basaltic layer of rock. The impact angles used were at 5° and 10° from the horizontal. The impact speed was ~2 km s?1 and the projectiles were 2.03 mm diameter aluminum spheres. The sand depth was between approximately 0.8 and 1.8 times the projectile diameter, implying a loose lunar surface regolith of similar dimensions to the SMART-1 spacecraft. A crater in the basement rock itself was only observed in the impact at 10° incidence, and where the depth of loose surface material was less than the projectile diameter, in which case the basement rock also contained a small pit-like crater. In all cases, the projectile ricocheted away from the impact site at a shallow angle. This implies that at the SMART-1 impact site the crater will have a complicated structure, with exposed basement rock and some excavated rock displaced nearby, and the main spacecraft body itself will not be present at the main crater.

We present results of FIB-TEM studies of 12 Stardust analog Al foil craters which were created by firing refractory Si and Ti carbide and nitride grains into Al foils at 6.05 km s 1 with a light-gas gun to simulate capture of cometary grains by the Stardust mission. These foils were prepared primarily to understand the low presolar grain abundances (both SiC and silicates) measured by SIMS in Stardust Al foil samples. Our results demonstrate the intact survival of submicron SiC, TiC, TiN, and less-refractory Si3N4 grains. In small ( 5 lm) are typically fragmented and are somewhat flattened in the direction of impact due to partial melting and/or plastic deformation. The low presolar grain abundance estimates derived from SIMS measurements of large craters (mostly >50 lm) likely result from greater modification of these impactors (i.e., melting and isotopic dilution), due to higher peak temperatures/ pressures in these crater impacts. The better survivability of grains in smaller craters suggests that more accurate presolar grain estimates may be achievable through measurement of such craters. It also suggests small craters can provide a complementary method of study of the Wild 2 fine fraction, especially for refractory CAI-like minerals.

The current technique for conducting in situ mass spectroscopic analysis of dust around extraterrestrial bodies is to have the dust impact a solid plate and analyze the atoms and molecular fragments resulting from the high speed impact. Due to the fact that the kinetic energy from the impact is converted primarily to thermal energy, much of the organic compounds present in the dust may be significantly altered or destroyed. To avoid this problem, aerogel could be used to capture the dust grains, largely intact, maintaining the integrity of the organic compounds in the interior of the dust grains. To demonstrate that organic molecules, present as minor components of silica particles, would survive hypervelocity capture in aerogel and can then be analyzed with mass spectrometry, several light gas gun impact tests and analyses were conducted. Fine particles containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were captured in aerogel at 5.5 km s −1 . The flow of metastable helium from a Direct Analysis Real Time (DART) source was used to desorb and ionize the organics, which were then analyzed with a mass spectrometer. The PAHs were detected and identified by the DART-MS, demonstrating that this method could be used on future flight instruments.

The variation of impact crater size in rock has been investigated as a function of target temperature in the range 150 K – 1150 K. Three rock types were used: limestone, sandstone and basalt. A total of thirty impacts were observed, at a typical impact speed of 5 km s-1 with a 0.8 mm diameter stainless steel spherical projectile. The three rocks behaved in two ways. The craters in limestone and sandstone initially grew in size, until a maximum was reached at around 500 K. Crater size then fell again as temperature increased further. For basalt however, crater size fell as temperature increased, reaching a constant level above 800 K. This strongly suggests that crater sizes seen in experiments on Earth, should not be taken as typical, rather they are a function of rock temperature. It proved difficult to relate crater size to target strength, as data in the literature on rock strength vs. temperature were in some cases contradictory.

Impact events are ubiquitous across the entire Solar System; craters are observed from Mercury to distant Pluto. This process has been occurring since the Solar System formed and is still occurring today. During such events, which typically occur at speeds measured in kilometers per second, extreme pressures and elevated temperatures are created. In order to understand the physical processes that occur under such conditions, we have been using a two-stage light gas gun to recreate hypervelocity impacts on a range of targets that are representative (in both composition and physical condition) of the surfaces of all objects within the Solar System. Within this paper we describe the advances we have made in light-gas gun technology, specifically focusing on the University of Kent’s light gas-gun, over the past 30 years which have led to significant advancements in Planetary Science and the general field of shock physics.

Many bodies in the outer solar system are theorized to have an ice shell with a different subsurface material below, be it chondritic, regolith, or a subsurface ocean. This layering can have a significant influence on the morphology of impact craters. Accordingly, we have undertaken laboratory hypervelocity impact experiments on a range of multilayered targets, with interiors of water, sand, and basalt. Impact experiments were undertaken using impact speeds in the range of 0.8–5.3 km s?1, a 1.5 mm Al ball bearing projectile, and an impact incidence of 45°. The surface ice crust had a thickness between 5 and 50 mm, i.e., some 3–30 times the projectile diameter.\ud \ud The thickness of the ice crust as well as the nature of the subsurface layer (liquid, well consolidated, etc.) have a marked effect on the morphology of the resulting impact crater, with thicker ice producing a larger crater diameter (at a given impact velocity), and the crater diameter scaling with impact speed to the power 0.72 for semi-infinite ice, but with 0.37 for thin ice. The density of the subsurface material changes the structure of the crater, with flat crater floors if there is a dense, well-consolidated subsurface layer (basalt) or steep, narrow craters if there is a less cohesive subsurface (sand). The associated faulting in the ice surface is also dependent on ice thickness and the substrate material.\ud \ud We find that the ice layer (in impacts at 5 km s?1) is effectively semi-infinite if its thickness is more than 15.5 times the projectile diameter. Below this, the crater diameter is reduced by 4% for each reduction in ice layer thickness equal to the impactor diameter. Crater depth is also affected. In the ice thickness region, 7–15.5 times the projectile diameter, the crater shape in the ice is modified even when the subsurface layer is not penetrated. For ice thicknesses

The results of catastrophic disruption experiments on static and rotating targets are reported. The experiments used cement spheres of diameter 10 cm as the targets. Impacts were by mm sized stainless steel spheres at speeds of between 1 and 7.75 km s−1. Energy densities (Q) in the targets ranged from 7 to 2613 J kg−1. The experiments covered both the cratering and catastrophic disruption regimes. For static, i.e. non-rotating targets the critical energy density for disruption (Q*, the value of Q when the largest surviving target fragment has a mass equal to one half of the pre-impact target mass) was Q* = 1447 ± 90 J kg−1. For rotating targets (median rotation frequency of 3.44 Hz) we found Q* = 987 ± 349 J kg−1, a reduction of 32% in the mean value. This lower value of Q* for rotating targets was also accompanied by a larger scatter on the data, hence the greater uncertainty. We suggest that in some cases the rotating targets behaved as static targets, i.e. broke up with the same catastrophic disruption threshold, but in other cases the rotation helped the break up causing a lower catastrophic disruption threshold, hence both the lower value of Q* and the larger scatter on the data. The fragment mass distributions after impact were similar in both the static and rotating target experiments with similar slopes.

The interstellar collector on NASA's Stardust mission captured many particles from sources other than the interstellar dust stream. Impact trajectory may provide a means of discriminating between these different sources, and thus identifying/eliminating candidate interstellar particles. The collector's aerogel preserved a clear record of particle impact trajectory from the inclination and direction of the resultant tracks. However, the collector also contained aluminum foils and, although impact crater studies to date suggest only the most inclined impacts (>45 degrees from normal) produce crater morphologies that indicate trajectory (i.e., distinctly elliptical), these studies have been restricted to much larger (mm and above) scales than are relevant for Stardust (m). It is unknown how oblique impact crater morphology varies as a function of length scale, and therefore how well Stardust craters preserve details of impactor trajectory. Here, we present data from a series of impact experiments, together with complementary hydrocode modeling, that examine how crater morphology changes with impact angles for different-sized projectiles. We find that, for our smallest spherical projectiles (2m diameter), the ellipticity and rim morphology provide evidence of their inclined trajectory from as little as 15 degrees from normal incidence. This is most likely a result of strain rate hardening in the target metal. Further experiments and models find that variation in velocity and impactor shape complicate these trends, but that rim morphology remains useful in determining impact direction (where the angle of impact is >20 degrees from normal) and may help identify candidate interstellar particle craters on the Stardust collector.

Here, we report analyses by synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microscopy of the elemental composition of eight candidate impact features extracted from the Stardust Interstellar Dust Collector (SIDC). Six of the features were unambiguous tracks, and two were crater-like features. Five of the tracks are so-called “midnight” tracks—that is, they had trajectories consistent with an origin either in the interstellar dust stream or as secondaries from impacts on the Sample Return Capsule (SRC). In a companion paper reporting synchrotron X-ray diffraction analyses of ISPE candidates, we show that two of these particles contain natural crystalline materials: the terminal particle of track 30 contains olivine and spinel, and the terminal particle of track 34 contains olivine. Here, we show that the terminal particle of track 30, Orion, shows elemental abundances, normalized to Fe, that are close to CI values, and a complex, fine-grained structure. The terminal particle of track 34, Hylabrook, shows abundances that deviate strongly from CI, but shows little fine structure and is nearly homogenous. The terminal particles of other midnight tracks, 29 and 37, had heavy element abundances below detection threshold. A third, track 28, showed a composition inconsistent with an extraterrestrial origin, but also inconsistent with known spacecraft materials. A sixth track, with a trajectory consistent with secondary ejecta from an impact on one of the spacecraft solar panels, contains abundant Ce and Zn. This is consistent with the known composition of the glass covering the solar panel. Neither crater-like feature is likely to be associated with extraterrestrial materials. We also analyzed blank aerogel samples to characterize background and variability between aerogel tiles. We found significant differences in contamination levels and compositions, emphasizing the need for local background subtraction for accurate quantification.

With the discovery of bona fide extraterrestrial materials in the Stardust Interstellar Dust Collector, NASA now has a fundamentally new returned sample collection, after the Apollo, Antarctic meteorite, Cosmic Dust, Genesis, Stardust Cometary, Hayabusa, and Exposed Space Hardware samples. Here, and in companion papers in this volume, we present the results from the Preliminary Examination of this collection, the Stardust Interstellar Preliminary Examination (ISPE). We found extraterrestrial materials in two tracks in aerogel whose trajectories and morphology are consistent with an origin in the interstellar dust stream, and in residues in four impacts in the aluminum foil collectors. While the preponderance of evidence, described in detail in companion papers in this volume, points toward an interstellar origin for some of these particles, alternative origins have not yet been eliminated, and definitive tests through isotopic analyses were not allowed under the terms of the ISPE. In this summary, we answer the central questions of the ISPE: How many tracks in the collector are consistent in their morphology and trajectory with interstellar particles? How many of these potential tracks are consistent with real interstellar particles, based on chemical analysis? Conversely, what fraction of candidates are consistent with either a secondary or interplanetary origin? What is the mass distribution of these particles, and what is their state? Are they particulate or diffuse? Is there any crystalline material? How many detectable impact craters (> 100 nm) are there in the foils, and what is their size distribution? How many of these craters have analyzable residue that is consistent with extraterrestrial material? And finally, can craters from secondaries be recognized through crater morphology (e.g., ellipticity)?

The planning of human spaceflight programmes is an exercise in careful rationing of a scarce and expensive resource. Current NASA plans are to develop the new capability for human-rated launch into space to replace the Space Transportation System (STS), more commonly known as the Space Shuttle, combined with a heavy lift capability, and followed by an eventual Mars mission. As an intermediate step towards Mars, NASA proposes to venture beyond Low Earth Orbit to cis-lunar space to visit a small asteroid which will be captured and moved to lunar orbit by a separate robotic mission. The rationale for this and how to garner support from the scientific community for such an asteroid mission are discussed. Key points that emerge are that a programme usually has greater legitimacy when it emerges from public debate, mostly via a Presidential Commission, a report by the National Research Council or a Decadal Review of science goals etc. Also, human spaceflight missions need to have support from a wide range of interested communities. Accordingly, an outline scientific case for a human visit to an asteroid is made. Further, it is argued here that the scientific interest in an asteroid mission needs to be included early in the planning stages, so that the appropriate capabilities (here the need for drilling cores and carrying equipment to, and returning samples from, the asteroid) can be included.

The survival of organic molecules in shock impact events has been investigated in the laboratory. A frozen mixture of anthracene and stearic acid, solvated in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), was fired in a two-stage light gas gun at speeds of ∼2 and ∼4 km s−1 at targets that included water ice, water, and sand. This involved shock pressures in the range of 2–12 GPa. It was found that the projectile materials were present in elevated quantities in the targets after impact and in some cases in the crater ejecta as well. For DMSO impacting water at 1.9 km s−1 and 45° incidence, we quantify the surviving fraction after impact as 0.44±0.05. This demonstrates successful transfer of organic compounds from projectile to target in high-speed impacts. The range of impact speeds used covers that involved in impacts of terrestrial meteorites on the Moon, as well as impacts in the outer Solar System on icy bodies such as Pluto. The results provide laboratory evidence that suggests that exogenous delivery of complex organic molecules from icy impactors is a viable source of such material on target bodies. The quantity of methane in Mars' atmosphere, and the potential mechanism(s) responsible for its production, are still unknown. In order to test viable, abiotic, methangenic processes, we experimentally investigated two possible impact mechanisms for generating methane. In the first suite of experiments, basaltic rocks were impacted at 5 km s−1 and the quantity of gases (CH4, H2, He, N2, O2, Ar and CO2) released by the impacts was measured. In the second suite of experiments, a mixture of water ice, CO2 ice and anhydrous olivine grains was impacted to see if the shock induced rapid serpentinization of the olivine, and thus production of methane. The results of both suites of experiments demonstrate that impacts (at scales achievable in the laboratory) do not give rise to detectably enhanced quantities of methane release above background levels. Supporting hydrocode modelling was also performed to gain insight into the pressures and temperatures occurring during the impact events.

Olivine, (Mg, Fe)2[SiO4], is a common mineral in extraterrestrial materials, whose Mg–Fe content varies from the end-members Forsterite (Mg2SiO4: denoted ‘Fo’) to Fayalite (Fe2SiO4: denoted ‘Fa’), together with minor quantities of Ca, Cr, Mn and Ni. Olivine is readily identified by Raman spectroscopy, and the Mg–Fe content can be obtained by precise measurements of the position of the two strongest Raman peaks. Here we show that this is not only true for pristine and highly crystalline olivine, but also for grains which have undergone high pressure shock processing during hypervelocity impact. We demonstrate that there are subtle changes to the Raman spectra in grains impacted at 6.1 km s−1 onto aluminium foil and into low density aerogel. We quantify these changes, and also show that if no correction is made for the impact effects, the Fe:Mg molar ratio of the olivine can be significantly misinterpreted. This study was stimulated by NASA’s Stardust mission to comet 81P/Wild-2, since freshly ejected cometary dust particles were collected (via impact) onto aluminium foil and into aerogel cells at 6.1 km s−1 and these samples are being investigated with Raman spectroscopy. We identify the residue in one Stardust impact crater on aluminium foil as arising from an olivine with a composition of Fo97–100.

International audience; The Stardust Interstellar Preliminary Examination team analyzed thirteen Al foils from the NASA Stardust interstellar collector tray in order to locate candidate interstellar dust (ISD) grain impacts. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images reveal that the foils possess abundant impact crater and crater-like features. Elemental analyses of the crater features, with Auger electron spectroscopy, SEM-based energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscope-based EDX spectroscopy, demonstrate that the majority are either the result of impacting debris fragments from the spacecraft solar panels, or intrinsic defects in the foil. The elemental analyses also reveal that four craters contain residues of a definite extraterrestrial origin, either as interplanetary dust particles or ISD particles. These four craters are designated level 2 interstellar candidates, based on the crater shapes indicative of hypervelocity impacts and the residue compositions inconsistent with spacecraft debris.

Early studies on the coloured particles that fell as red rain over southern India identified them as unicellular eukaryotes such as members of the red algae or fungi; however, the results of the present investigation are not consistent with this designation. Using transmission electron microscopy, we have demonstrated significant differences in the ultrastructure when compared with representative species from these other groups. Most notably, the red rain cells show no evidence of typical eukaryotic internal structures such as mitochondria or endoplasmic reticulum. Furthermore, comparisons based on elemental composition using energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, as well as Raman spectral signatures demonstrate significant dissimilarities in their molecular composition. The identity and origins of the red rain cells remain an enigma; however, our findings are more consistent with an unidentified prokaryote, and thus suggest that previous attempts at their identification should be reappraised.

Comets harbour the organic precursors of amino acids. High-velocity impact experiments into icy targets suggest that impacts involving icy planetary bodies could be a viable pathway to synthesize the complex organic compounds needed for life.

Experimental data are now widely available for the size of craters resulting from hypervelocity impacts of millimetre scale projectiles onto water ice targets. At such size scales the bowl shaped crater formed in ductile materials, or in larger scale impacts, is here surrounded by a large spallation zone due to the brittle nature of the ice. Modelling of these impacts therefore has to take account of this spallation. Here we used the iSALE2 hydrocode to simulate such impacts and compared the results to experimental data. We found that it was possible to reproduce the experimental data over a range of speeds (1–7 km s −1 ) for aluminium and copper projectiles. Initially, to reproduce the large spallation regions around the craters it was assumed that above a certain degree of damage, material was removed by spallation. However this simple one-parameter model failed to model the crater depth adequately. Accordingly, to obtain the best agreement of the simulations with the experimental data, a two-step ice strength was introduced, whereby above a critical amount of damage (0.95), the yield strength reduced from 1 MPa (intact) to 70 kPa (damaged). As a result, experimental data for crater depth and diameter and the results of the simulations agree to within 6% for diameter and 5% for depth over the impact energy range used in the experiments (1–240 J).

We announce the creation of a new online archive containing high resolution images, and measurements of over 200 metal plates impacted with a variety of projectiles at velocities between 1 and 8.5 km s−1. This archive is being made freely accessible for use by the shock physics and hypervelocity impact research communities. During the course of this archival work, it was discovered that debris cloud impact patterns from nylon projectiles form distinct geometric patterns, and that these patterns seem to fall into a distinct group depending on the projectile impact velocity. Complementary hydrocode modelling (using Ansys' AUTODYN) has been performed to try to recreate the patterns, but was not entirely successful, indicating that there is some physics that is not simulated within the hydrocode.

Data from hypervelocity impact experiments shows that the size of an impact crater is a non-linear function of the projectile diameter for micrometre-scale and smaller sized impactors. This non-linearity is thought to arise due to the strain rate hardening of the target materials at the ultra-high strain rates experienced during the impact event (approaching 1010 s−1). Here we investigate this ultra-high strain regime using a combination of experimental and simulated results. The experimental work involved samples of monodisperse silica and sodalime glass spheres with diameters between 500 nm and 22 μm which were fired onto aluminium 1100 alloy, high purity (99.5+%) tantalum and copper targets at a velocity of ca. 6 km s−1 using a light gas gun. Precise measurements of the resulting crater diameters were made using scanning electron microscopy (with a resolution of a few tens of nanometers). We also ran hydrocode simulations of the impact events using ANSYS’ AUTODYN to compare the modelled results against the experimental data. The Preston–Tonks–Wallace (PTW) constitutive model was used in the hydrocode as it specifically deals with loading events at very high strain rates. Comparison is also made with results obtained using the Steinberg-Guinan strength model which is also applicable at high strain rates. The results demonstrate that current literature values for the PTW model need refining in order to accurately model micrometre-scale (and below), hypervelocity impact events. We present updated model parameters for Al, Cu and Ta and thus show that impact craters give an indirect measurement of the yield strength of a material at strain rates approaching 1011 s−1.

We report on the survivability in hypervelocity impacts of yeast in spore form, and as mature cultures, at impact velocities from 1 to 7.4 km s −1 , corresponding to an estimated peak shock pressure of ∼43 GPa. Spores from a yeast strain (BY4743), deficient in an enzyme required for uracil production, were fired into water (to simulate oceanic impact from space) using a light gas gun. The water was then retrieved and filtered and the resulting retentate and filtrate cultured to determine viability and survival rates of remnant spores. Yeast growth (confirmed as coming from the original sample as it had the same enzyme deficiency) was found in recovered samples at all impact speeds, albeit in smaller quantities at the higher speeds. The survival probabilities were measured as ∼50% at 1 km s −1 , falling to ∼10 −3 % at 7.4 km s −1 . This follows the pattern observed in previous work on survival of microbial life and spores exposed to extreme shock loading, where there is reasonable survival at low peak shock pressures with more severe lethality above a critical shock pressure at the GPa scale (here between 2 and 10 GPa). These results are explained in the context of a general model for survival against extreme shock and are relevant to the hypotheses of panspermia and litho-panspermia, showing that extreme shocks during transfer across space are not necessarily sterilising.

Monitoring the lunar surface for impacts is a highly rewarding approach to study small asteroids and large meteoroids encountering the Earth–Moon System. The various effects of meteoroids impacting the Moon are described and results from different detection and study techniques are compared. While the traditional statistics of impact craters allow us to determine the cumulative meteoroid flux on the lunar surface, the recent successful identification of fresh craters in orbital imagery has the potential to directly measure the cratering rate of today. Time-resolved recordings, e.g., seismic data of impacts and impact flash detections clearly demonstrate variations of the impact flux during the lunar day. From the temporal/spatial distribution of impact events, constraints can be obtained on the meteoroid approach trajectories and velocities. The current monitoring allows us to identify temporal clustering of impacts and to study the different meteoroid showers encountering the Earth–Moon system. Though observational biases and deficiencies in our knowledge of the scaling laws are severe, there appears to be an order-of-magnitude agreement in the observed flux within the error limits. Selenographic asymmetries in the impact flux (e.g., for equatorial vs. polar areas) have been predicted. An excess of impacts on the lunar leading hemisphere can be demonstrated in current data. We expect that future missions will allow simultaneous detections of seismic events and impact flashes. The known locations and times of the flashes will allow us to constrain the seismic solutions. While the numbers of flash detections are still limited, coordinated world-wide observations hold great potential for exploiting this observation technique. The potential for identification of fresh craters in high-resolution orbital image data has just barely been tapped, but should improve significantly with the LRO extended mission.

This paper describes studies leading to the development of an acoustic instrument for measuring properties of micrometeoroids and other dust particles in space. The instrument uses a pair of easily penetrated membranes separated by a known distance. Sensors located on these films detect the transient acoustic signals produced by particle impacts. The arrival times of these signals at the sensor locations are used in a simple multilateration calculation to measure the impact coordinates on each film. Particle direction and speed are found using these impact coordinates and the known membrane separations. This ability to determine particle speed, direction, and time of impact provides the information needed to assign the particle’s orbit and identify its likely origin. In many cases additional particle properties can be estimated from the signal amplitudes, including approximate diameter and (for small particles) some indication of composition/morphology. Two versions of this instrument were evaluated in this study. Fiber optic displacement sensors are found advantageous when very thin membranes can be maintained in tension (solar sails, lunar surface). Piezoelectric strain sensors are preferred for thicker films without tension (long duration free flyers). The latter was selected for an upcoming installation on the International Space Station.

Kuebler et al. (2006) identified variations in olivine Raman spectra based upon the composition of individual olivine grains, leading to identification of olivine composition from Raman spectra alone. However, shock on a crystal lattice has since been shown to result in a structural change to the original material, which produces a shift in the Raman spectra of olivine grains compared with the original un-shocked olivine (Foster et al., 2013). This suggests that the use of the compositional calculations from the Raman spectra, reported in Kuebler et al. (2006), may provide an incorrect compositional value for material that has experienced shock. Here we have investigated the effect of impact speed (and hence peak shock pressure) on the shift in the Raman spectra for San Carlos olivine (Fo91) impacting Al. foil. Powdered San Carlos olivine (grain size 1 to 10 ?m) was fired at a range of impact speeds from 0.6 – 6.1 km s-1 (peak shock pressures 5 – 86 GPa) at Al. foil to simulate capture over a wide range of peak shock pressures. A permanent change in the Raman spectra was found to be observed only for impact speeds greater than ~5 km s-1. The process that causes the shift is most likely linked to an increase in the peak pressure produced by the impact, but only after a minimum shock pressure associated with the speed at which the effect is first observed (here 65 – 86 GPa). At speeds around 6 km s-1 (peak shock pressures ~86 GPa) the shift in Raman peak positions is in a similar direction (red shift) to that observed by Foster et al. (2013) but of twice the magnitude.
