The phylum was expanded by two new families (bunyaviral Discoviridae and Tulasviridae), 41 new genera, and 98 new species. Three hundred forty-nine species were renamed and/or moved. The accidentally misspelled names of seven species were corrected. In this short article, we respond to a Commentary by Maack et al. (Environ Sci Eur 34:24, 2022) in which they challenge recommendations in Leverett et al. (Environ Sci Eur 33:133, 2021) for setting an aquatic Environmental Quality Standard (EQS) for the pharmaceutical diclofenac. Maack et al. recommend the use of results from a stream mesocosm study as the main point of departure for setting the EQS and dismiss the use of a Species Sensitivity Distribution (SSD) containing relevant and reliable single species data because of bimodality in this distribution. We present the key mesocosm data used by Maack et al. and note that these are highly variable, include control mortalities of up to 60%, and, as reported by the original authors, show a significant effect only at the highest test concentration and not at the estimated value proposed by Maack et al. We also show that there are neither regulatory nor technical grounds for dismissing the use of an SSD and respond to minor criticisms of our compliance assessment (comparison of different EQS values with reported concentrations in European surface waters). Finally, we provide comment on the EQS derivation process and subsequent opinion of the diclofenac EQS dossier by the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER).

Evidence from both laboratory and field studies has shown that currently used synthetic and naturally occurring chemical substances may potentially disrupt invertebrate endocrine systems, although the extent of this in field populations remains unclear. Translating concerns about potential endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) into practical and effective regulatory action is currently hampered by the breadth of invertebrate endocrinology when compared to the better understood vertebrate systems, a lack of fundamental knowledge about the endocrinology of many invertebrate groups, and the resulting uncertainty when making regulatory decisions. This commentary (i) outlines the breadth of invertebrate endocrine pathways for which European Union regulation of potential EDCs may be relevant; (ii) reviews the extent to which current knowledge meets regulatory requirements for invertebrates, including an assessment of the suitability of current invertebrate test guidelines for detecting endocrine modes of action; and (iii) proposes a roadmap towards the regulation of potential EDCs with greater confidence, based on the Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) concept and a focus on identifying Molecular Initiating Events (MIEs) within AOPs. We conclude there are no validated tools to determine any invertebrate endocrine mode of action in vitro or in vivo. However, there are commonly used invertebrate toxicity tests which might capture adverse effects that could potentially result from an endocrine mode of action but would not identify the causal mechanisms. Therefore, EU regulatory requirements for the identification of EDCs cannot currently be satisfied for invertebrates, either in general or for the specific invertebrates used in standard ecotoxicological studies. We propose that the most important research need is compilation of a comprehensive list of endocrine-related MIEs across invertebrate taxa via use of high-throughput ‘omics in combination with bioinformatics reverse engineered analyses. Although tractable, such an approach would require significant resource investment for development and implementation.

Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory human and veterinary medicine widely detected in European surface waters, especially downstream from Wastewater Treatment Plants. Veterinary uses of diclofenac in Europe are greatly restricted, so wastewater is the key exposure route for wildlife. Proposed Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) which include an assessment of toxicity to aquatic organisms are under consideration by the European Commission (EC) to support the aims of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). The EC approach favours the use of a deterministic (single test value and an assessment factor) approach to the derivation of a direct toxicity EQS for diclofenac, resulting in an EQS of 0.040 µg L− 1 based on a single mesocosm study. In this paper, we discuss potential issues with this approach with respect to the EC’s own guidance on EQS derivation and derive an evidence-driven alternative EQS of 0.126 µg L− 1 using a probabilistic (Species Sensitivity Distribution) approach that accounts for all of the reliable and relevant data and is in accordance with the guidance. Europe-wide freshwater monitoring data for diclofenac are used in an indicative compliance assessment using the EC and the alternative evidence-driven EQS. The implications of using only some data to derive an EQS that does not adhere to the guidance, compared to a guidance compliant approach that uses all the data available is also discussed.

The European Commission intends to protect vertebrate wildlife populations by regulating plant protection product (PPP) active substances that have endocrine‐disrupting properties with a hazard‐based approach. In this paper we consider how the Commission's hazard‐based regulation and accompanying guidance can be operationalized to ensure that a technically robust process is used to distinguish between substances with adverse population‐level effects and those for which it can be demonstrated that adverse effects observed (typically in the laboratory) do not translate into adverse effects at the population level. Our approach is to use population models within the adverse outcome pathway framework to link the nonlinear relationship between adverse effects at the individual and population levels in the following way: (1) use specific protection goals for focal wildlife populations within an ecosystem services framework; (2) model the effects of changes in population‐related inputs on focal species populations with individual‐based population models to determine thresholds between negligible and nonnegligible (i.e., adverse) population‐level effects; (3) compare these thresholds with the relevant endpoints from laboratory toxicity tests to determine whether they are likely to be exceeded at hazard‐based limits or the maximum tolerated dose/concentration from the experimental studies. If the population threshold is not exceeded, then the substance should not be classified as an endocrine disruptor with population‐relevant adversity unless there are other lines of evidence within a weight‐of‐evidence approach to challenge this. We believe this approach is scientifically robust and still addresses the political and legal requirement for a hazard‐based assessment. The fish short-term reproduction assay (FSTRA) is an in vivo screen to assess potential interactions with the fish endocrine system. After a 21-day exposure period vitellogenin (VTG) and secondary sexual characteristics are measured in males and females. Egg production and fertility are also monitored daily throughout the test. This paper presents data from 49 studies performed to satisfy test orders from the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program. Data Evaluation Records were used to collate the typical control variability and performance of test parameters in FSTRAs conducted in different laboratories with fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas). We also examine the statistical power of FSTRA endpoints and assess whether available historical control data (HCD) assist evidence-based interpretation of the endpoints. Statistically significant inter-laboratory differences were found for all endpoints except survival. HCD could therefore be usefully developed on a laboratory-by-laboratory basis to aid interpretation of new study data. Reliable HCD ranges could be developed for survival, body weight/length, gonadal somatic index, fertilisation success, and male tubercle score, and used in association with stated test acceptability criteria to interpret FSTRA data. In contrast, high intra- and inter-laboratory control variability for VTG and fecundity means that HCD for these endpoints are of limited use during study interpretation.

Amphibians are currently the most threatened and rapidly declining group of vertebrates and this has raised concerns about their potential sensitivity and exposure to plant protection products and other chemicals. Current environmental risk assessment procedures rely on surrogate species (e.g. fish and birds) to cover the risk to aquatic and terrestrial life stages of amphibians, respectively. Whilst a recent meta-analysis has shown that in most cases amphibian aquatic life stages are less sensitive to chemicals than fish, little research has been conducted on the comparative sensitivity of terrestrial amphibian life stages. Therefore, in this paper we address the questions "What is the relative sensitivity of terrestrial amphibian life stages to acute chemical oral exposure when compared with mammals and birds?" and "Are there correlations between oral toxicity data for amphibians and data for mammals or birds?" Identifying a relationship between these data may help to avoid additional vertebrate testing. Acute oral amphibian toxicity data collected from the scientific literature and ecotoxicological databases were compared with toxicity data for mammals and birds. Toxicity data for terrestrial amphibian life stages are generally sparse, as noted in previous reviews. Single-dose oral toxicity data for terrestrial amphibian life stages were available for 26 chemicals and these were positively correlated with LD50 values for mammals, while no correlation was found for birds. Further, the data suggest that oral toxicity to terrestrial amphibian life stages is similar to or lower than that for mammals and birds, with a few exceptions. Thus, mammals or birds are considered adequate toxicity surrogates for use in the assessment of the oral exposure route in amphibians. However, there is a need for further data on a wider range of chemicals to explore the wider applicability of the current analyses and recommendations.

Lyon acquiert dans ces annees une identite editoriale specifique, qui se detache sur le paysage poetique du Royaume. L’etude des concurrences et des pillages reciproques entre Lyon et Paris met en evidence l’existence de deux identites poetiques distinctes : Lyon marque une modernite dans l’edition et la diffusion de nouveaux genres que ne comprend pas encore Paris. Quand les imprimeurs lyonnais puisent dans les productions parisiennes, c’est en se les appropriant pour les integrer dans un catalogue et reaffirmer l’existence d’un groupe lyonnais porteur d’une identite culturelle et poetique. Cette identite, doublee d’une qualite editoriale remarquable, fonde la preeminence de l’imprimerie lyonnaise dans le Sud de la France, comme le montre l’exemple toulousain. Tout cela contribue a l’elaboration d’un champ poetique fonde sur une coherence affichee mais menacee par des forces centripetes qui remettent en question l’unite de la poesie lyonnaise. S’il y a « poesie lyonnaise », c’est en ce que le livre de poesie soutient les ambitions politiques de la cite, dans une periode de conflit avec Charles Quint puis de changement de regne.

This article discusses the origins and development of the Collected Works of Erasmus series, a project to translate the vast majority of the Dutch humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam’s Greek and Latin writings into English. A unique partnership between the University of Toronto Press and a team of Canadian and international scholars, the series is roughly 70 percent complete. Sixty of the projected eighty-six volumes have been published. Conceived by the late Ron Schoeffel, a long-serving editor at the Press, the series is expected to be complete by 2030. Cet article examine les origines et le développement de la collection Collected Works of Erasmus, consistant en la traduction anglaise de la plupart des écrits en grec et latin de l’humaniste néerlandais Érasme de Rotterdam. Grâce à un partenariat unique entre les Presses de l’Université de Toronto et une équipe internationale de chercheurs canadiens et étrangers, la collection est maintenant terminée à 70 pourcent. Ce sont soixante des quatre-vingt-six volumes projetés qui ont été publiés. La collection, conçue par Ron Schoeffel, éditeur de longue date aux Presses de l’Université de Toronto, devrait être complétée d’ici 2030.

Benjamin G. Kohl (1938-2010) taught at Vassar College from 1966 till his retirement as Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities in 2001. His doctoral research at The Johns Hopkins University was directed by Frederic C. Lane, and his principal historical interests focused on northern Italy during the Renaissance, especially on Padua and Venice. His scholarly production includes the volumes Padua under the Carrara, 1318-1405 (1998), and Culture and Politics in Early Renaissance Padua (2001), and the online database The Rulers of Venice, 1332-1524 (2009). The database is eloquent testimony of his priority attention to historical sources and to their accessibility, and also of his enthusiasm for collaboration and sharing among scholars.

The chronic toxicity of chemicals to fish is routinely assessed by using fish early life stage (ELS) test results. Fish full life cycle (FLC) tests are generally required only when toxicity, bioaccumulation, and persistence triggers are met or when there is a suspicion of potential endocrine-disrupting properties. This regulatory approach is based on a relationship between the results of fish ELS and FLC studies first established more than 35 yrs ago. Recently, this relationship has been challenged by some regulatory authorities, and it has been recommended that more substances should undergo FLC testing. In addition, a project proposal has been submitted to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to develop a fish partial life cycle (PLC) test including a reproductive assessment. Both FLC and PLC tests are animal- and resource-intensive and technically challenging and should therefore be undertaken only if there is clear evidence that they are necessary for coming to a regulatory decision. The present study reports on an analysis of a database of paired fish ELS and FLC endpoints for plant protection product active substances from European Union draft assessment reports and the US Environmental Protection Agency Office of Pesticide Programs Pesticide Ecotoxicity Database. Analysis of this database shows a clear relationship between ELS and FLC responses, with similar median sensitivity across substances when no-observed-effect concentrations (NOECs) are compared. There was also no indication that classification of a substance as a mammalian reproductive toxicant leads to more sensitive effects in fish FLC tests than in ELS tests. Indeed, the response of the ELS tests was generally more sensitive than the most sensitive reproduction NOEC from a FLC test. This analysis indicates that current testing strategies and guidelines are fit for purpose and that there is no need for fish full or partial life cycle tests for most plant protection product active substances.

The acute and chronic toxicity of chemicals to fish is routinely assessed using fish acute and early life stage (ELS) test results, usually with freshwater species. Under some regulations with certain substances, however, data on saltwater species may also be required. Evidence from earlier studies suggests that saltwater fish species are generally no more sensitive than freshwater species and that when they are more sensitive to a substance the difference in sensitivity is usually less than a factor of 10. However, most of these studies concentrated on acute lethal toxicity results for a wide range of substances and across a range of taxonomic groups. In the present study, the authors compare freshwater and saltwater acute median lethal concentration (LC50) and chronic ELS no-observed-effect concentration (NOEC) results from standardized regulatory studies specifically for fish species exposed to the same plant protection or biocidal product active substances to determine the value of testing in both freshwater and saltwater fish. The results suggest that, in most cases, use of a freshwater fish 96-h LC50 or longer-term ELS NOEC should be sufficient to protect saltwater species. In a small number of cases (12%), saltwater ELS NOECs were more sensitive by a factor >10, although differences in sensitivity were not consistent for this small number of substances when 96-h LC50 and longer-term ELS NOECs were compared. It is debatable whether such a low probability merits the additional animal use required to run saltwater fish tests, especially when onshore contaminants released to estuaries and coastal environments are likely to be diluted many-fold when compared with concentrations found in freshwaters. The relative sensitivity of amphibians to chemicals in the environment, including plant protection product active substances, is the subject of ongoing scientific debate. The objective of this study was to compare systematically the relative sensitivity of amphibians and fish to chemicals. Acute and chronic toxicity data were obtained from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) ECOTOX database and were supplemented with data from the scientific and regulatory literature. The overall outcome is that fish and amphibian toxicity data are highly correlated and that fish are more sensitive (both acute and chronic) than amphibians. In terms of acute sensitivity, amphibians were between 10- and 100-fold more sensitive than fish for only four of 55 chemicals and more than 100-fold more sensitive for only two chemicals. However, a detailed inspection of these cases showed a similar acute sensitivity of fish and amphibians. Chronic toxicity data for fish were available for 52 chemicals. Amphibians were between 10- and 100-fold more sensitive than fish for only two substances (carbaryl and dexamethasone) and greater than 100-fold more sensitive for only a single chemical (sodium perchlorate). The comparison for carbaryl was subsequently determined to be unreliable and that for sodium perchlorate is a potential artifact of the exposure medium. Only a substance such as dexamethasone, which interferes with a specific aspect of amphibian metamorphosis, might not be detected using fish tests. However, several other compounds known to influence amphibian metamorphosis were included in the analysis, and these did not affect amphibians disproportionately. These analyses suggest that additional amphibian testing is not necessary during chemical risk assessment.

This paper describes the use of time to event and Species Sensitivity Distribution (SSD) analyses to derive environmental quality standards (EQS) for the synthetic pyrethroid deltamethrin when used to treat lice in marine finfish aquaculture. Long-term EQS are of limited applicability for parasiticides used in coastal aquaculture because initially high concentrations are rapidly dissipated and diluted. Short-term EQS related to likely exposure duration are a more useful management tool. Accelerated Life Testing was used to analyse high-quality, time-specific survival data (LC10 values) for saltwater fish and crustacean species for which observations on survival over several time periods were available. These data were then plotted as SSDs, allowing the estimation of time-specific median HC5 values, protective of 95% of organisms in saltwater assemblages if the test data are representative of species in the field. These analyses show that after 3 h, the HC5 of LC10 values for deltamethrin in saltwater is 9.3 ng L−1, declining to 1.4 ng L−1 after 48 h of continuous exposure. Such values are consistent with data on effect concentrations from other lines of evidence, including mesocosm and field studies, and can be used as time-specific EQS when monitoring discharges from aquaculture facilities immediately after the treatment of fish with deltamethrin.

As the number of veterans in custody is suspected to increase, limited studies have investigated the criminogenic needs of this population. It is recognised that the needs associated with this minority group of prisoners may differ as a result of their veteran status, and as such it is imperative to acknowledge these needs in view of reducing reoffending rates. Self report measures were used to investigate the prevalence of Intrusive Experiences, Defensive Avoidance and Dissociation (dimensions of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and mental health and substance use disorders in five veterans in custody. The data was considered in view of the participants’ experiences of combat, and the witnessing of serious injury or death. The findings highlighted that incarcerated veterans show a need to address their emotional management and past combat duties was associated with such a need. Accommodation and substance misuse were also criminogenic risk factors. Such findings have implications for future research studies using larger sample sizes, comparisons to the general prison population and reducing veterans’ risk of recidivism.

Larvae of a lichenophagous bagworm moth, Luffia ferchaultella [Stephens 1850], were used to monitor the potential environmental impact of pollutants from a diffuse emission source, exhaust emission products, around Junction 16 of the M25 London Orbital motorway where it interchanges with the M40 motorway. Larvae were fed terrestrial epiphytic algae, collected on four occasions over a 3.5-year period, from 17 sites located within a 16 km(2) survey area. After 10 days of exposure to algae from certain sites, large reductions in the amount of fecal material (frass) produced by the larvae were noted. These reductions correlated with the concentrations of exhaust-related metals in the algae. On all four sampling occasions one site, located close to the junction, had some of the highest levels of exhaust related contaminants and resulted in significantly reduced larval frass production. Geostatistics were used to map the extent of the affected areas. On all four sampling occasions sites located down wind, to the east of the interchange, were statistically significantly affected. This area of impact increased in extent from 1998 to 2000, when a second area of contamination developed to the south west of the junction. By January 2001 the extent of the impacted area in the south west of Junction 16 had increased, while that to the east had declined. By September 2001 the extent of the impacted area to the west of the junction had spread still further, while the impacted area to the east remained reduced when compared with the situation found in 1998.

On 3 October 2007, 40 participants with diverse expertise attended the workshop Tamiflu and the Environment: Implications of Use under Pandemic Conditions to assess the potential human health impact and environmental hazards associated with use of Tamiflu during an influenza pandemic. Based on the identification and risk-ranking of knowledge gaps, the consensus was that oseltamivir ethylester-phosphate (OE-P) and oseltamivir carboxylate (OC) were unlikely to pose an ecotoxicologic hazard to freshwater organisms. OC in river water might hasten the generation of OC-resistance in wildfowl, but this possibility seems less likely than the potential disruption that could be posed by OC and other pharmaceuticals to the operation of sewage treatment plants. The work-group members agreed on the following research priorities: a) available data on the ecotoxicology of OE-P and OC should be published; b) risk should be assessed for OC-contaminated river water generating OC-resistant viruses in wildfowl; c) sewage treatment plant functioning due to microbial inhibition by neuraminidase inhibitors and other antimicrobials used during a pandemic should be investigated; and d) realistic worst-case exposure scenarios should be developed. Additional modeling would be useful to identify localized areas within river catchments that might be prone to high pharmaceutical concentrations in sewage treatment plant effluent. Ongoing seasonal use of Tamiflu in Japan offers opportunities for researchers to assess how much OC enters and persists in the aquatic environment. The emerging literature on the ecotoxicity of nanoparticles and nanomaterials is summarised, then the fundamental physico-chemistry that governs particle behaviour is explained in an ecotoxicological context. Techniques for measuring nanoparticles in various biological and chemical matrices are also outlined. The emerging ecotoxicological literature shows toxic effects on fish and invertebrates, often at low mg l(-1) concentrations of nanoparticles. However, data on bacteria, plants, and terrestrial species are particularly lacking at present. Initial data suggest that at least some manufactured nanoparticles may interact with other contaminants, influencing their ecotoxicity. Particle behaviour is influenced by particle size, shape, surface charge, and the presence of other materials in the environment. Nanoparticles tend to aggregate in hard water and seawater, and are greatly influenced by the specific type of organic matter or other natural particles (colloids) present in freshwater. The state of dispersion will alter ecotoxicity, but many abiotic factors that influence this, such as pH, salinity, and the presence of organic matter remain to be systematically investigated as part of ecotoxicological studies. Concentrations of manufactured nanoparticles have rarely been measured in the environment to date. Various techniques are available to characterise nanoparticles for exposure and dosimetry, although each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages for the ecotoxicologist. We conclude with a consideration of implications for environmental risk assessment of manufactured nanoparticles.

Quality standards (QS) for dissolved metals in freshwaters have been proposed underthe European Water Framework Directive (WFD) and are based mainly upon laboratory ecotoxicity data. Uncertainties remain about laboratory-to-field extrapolation to establish QS that are neither over- nor underprotective. Freshwater benthic macroinvertebrates are a group of organisms of known sensitivity to heavy metals. We analyzed a dataset from England and Wales of dissolved metal concentrations (cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, nickel, lead, and zinc) and associated benthic invertebrate community metrics, using piecewise regression, quantile regression, and information on metal concentrations consistent with good quality status. Analysis of these field data suggests that dissolved metal QS proposed under the WFD are similar to metal concentrations in rivers associated with unimpaired benthic invertebrate assemblages in England and Wales. The only exceptions to this are QS for iron and zinc, where use of relatively large assessment factors leads to standards that are substantially below concentrations associated with impaired invertebrate assemblages in the field.

Long term exposure of skylarks to a fictitious insecticide and of wood mice to a fictitious fungicide were modelled probabilistically in a Monte Carlo simulation. Within the same simulation the consequences of exposure to pesticides on reproductive success were modelled using the toxicity-exposure-linking rules developed by R.S. Bennet et al. (2005) and the interspecies extrapolation factors suggested by R. Luttik et al. (2005). We built models to reflect a range of scenarios and as a result were able to show how exposure to pesticide might alter the number of individuals engaged in any given phase of the breeding cycle at any given time and predict the numbers of new adults at the season's end.

The effect of exposingLymnaea stagnalis(Gastropoda: Pulmonata), infected withDiplostomum spathaceum(Trematoda: Diplostomatidae), to 100 μg l−1cadmium for 7 days on survival characteristics (survival, tail loss, decaudized cercarial life-span) of emerged cercariae was investigated. Exposure ofL. stagnalisto cadmium resulted in significantly increasedD. spathaceumcercarial survival and an inhibited tail loss compared to controls. The normal parallel relationship which exists over time between decreasing cercarial survival and increasing tail loss in controls was changed in cercariae from cadmium-exposed hosts with an increased proportion of cercarial deaths occurring without tail loss. The decaudized cercarial life-span over the survival period of the cercarial population did not significantly change. However comparisons between individuals decaudized during the initial 24 h time period with those which were decaudized during the final period of cercarial survival showed a significantly altered life span which did not occur in the control population. As a potential indicator of penetration ‘fitness’ comparisons were also undertaken between control and exposed cercariae decaudized during the initial 24 h time period, which revealed that the decaudized cercarial life-span from the exposed hosts was significantly different from controls. This may have important implications for the ability of cercariae to migrate through the tissues of their target host. The importance and relevance of these results to parasite transmission are discussed.

EU Directive 91/414/EEC requires there to be no unacceptable effects on the environment from the use of pesticides. This paper reports the views of direct stakeholder groups and results from an opinion survey of more than 2000 members of the general public on what in practice should constitute acceptable and unacceptable effects of pesticides. Stakeholders in focus groups were concerned with the potential effects of pesticides on animal and plant population viability and micro-organism function but recognized that a trade-off exists between the potential economic advantages of responsible pesticide use and the potential disadvantages of individual poisoning events. The public opinion survey showed that although pesticides are widely used in homes and gardens, their use on farm crops remains of concern to the public. Concerns are greatest on issues of human health and food quality but potential environmental effects are also an issue for a substantial number of people, particularly if attractive species could be affected.

Pesticides are authorized in the European Union under Directive 91/414/EEC. This is a two-stage process that involves EU-wide assessment for Annex I listing followed by individual Member State assessment. Recently the concept of an Ecologically Acceptable Concentration (EAC) has been used during both stages of environmental risk assessments. The EAC is a concentration at which no “unacceptable” ecological effects occur and has been interpreted as a concentration at which “acceptable” effects may be allowed to occur. This article reviews the implications of the EAC concept for pesticides risk assessment and proposes improvements to make its use more objective.

The key findings to emerge from the successful Direct Toxicity Assessment Demonstration Programme are reviewed. At present, whole sample toxicity tests can identify and help control releases of complex mixtures that are likely to cause short-term toxic effects. Protection of aquatic organisms from the many hazardous chemicals that enter the environment, usually as complex mixtures, will require the introduction of new and improved techniques that are affordable and provide rapid turnaround of information. A number of bioassays were rigorously tested during the DTA programme. Further developments are suggested and other methods, including biosensors, biomarkers, and biological survey are briefly reviewed.

The toxicity of the anti-fouling biocides tributyltin (TBTO), copper, and Irgarol 1051 (irgarol) at a nominal concentration of 10 microg/l over a 30 day period were investigated against the viability of metacercarial cysts of the digenean parasite Echinoparyphium recurvatum resident within the body of two common freshwater snails, Lymnaea peregra and Physa fontinalis. Reduced parasite viability was found under most exposures in both snail species. However a greater effect of toxicant exposure was found in cysts within P. fontinalis compared to those in L. peregra. This was associated with an increased mortality of the host snail. Among all tested biocides, TBTO exposures induced the highest mortality to both the parasite and their hosts. These results suggest that parasite viability is interlinked with survival of the host snail. The mechanisms of differing toxicity between host species and its relevance to successful parasite transmission to the next host are discussed.

Field assessment methods for freshwater macroinvertebrates and water quality in tropical small-island states were assessed in the Dominican Republic. Macroinvertebrate samples were collected from 26 river sites within the Dominican Republic's Yaque del Norte river catchment. Environmental data on geographical, physical and chemical variables were also collected from each site. The Biological Monitoring Working Party score and total numbers of Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera were calculated for each site. Physico-chemical and biological data sets were ordinated by principal components analysis and non-parametric multi-dimensional scaling, and the biotic and abiotic data sets were correlated to determine the most influential factors determining site similarities. Macroinvertebrate assemblage structure was correlated with declining water quality: however, a high correlation between water quality and altitude confounded an unqualified interpretation of impairment.

The Water Framework Directive is the most important piece of water legislation in Europe for many years and will substantially influence the environmental regulation of chemicals, including human and veterinary pharmaceuticals. The development of Sediment Environmental Quality Standards (EQSs) is called for by the Directive, and proposals have been made for achieving this. However, these proposals are technically controversial and could have considerable logistical consequences. This paper describes the background to the Directive and lists questions that must be answered before Sediment EQS derivation is undertaken. Possible answers to these questions are then provided. The main problems with current proposals to the EC are that mandatory 'pass/fail' standards assume that approaches for setting sediment standards are more reliable than is the case, and that suspended sediments are a more appropriate sampling medium than settled sediments for assessing the general risk of sediment-bound chemicals to wildlife.

This paper is in response to a previous article in a Special Issue of Toxicology Letters. That article criticised the current regulatory framework in the European Union for the environmental risk assessment of veterinary medicinal products (VMPs) and feed additives (FAs), in particular the ongoing process of international harmonisation of guidance. This response addresses the concerns raised in relation to veterinary medicinal products and demonstrates that the VICH process has been brought within the scope of current EU regulatory processes for veterinary medicines and therefore is not separate to them. Consultation with stakeholders takes place throughout the VICH process, with an additional period of open public consultation before guidance is adopted and implemented.

The major exposure and uptake route for soluble toxins by aquatic organisms is generally considered to be through the water column. In the case of hydrophobic chemicals, exposure and uptake through diet often take on greater importance as the chemicals adsorb onto organic sediments and food. A chemical that has recently come under close scrutiny because of its toxicity and possible endocrine disrupting effects in aquatic life is 4-nonylphenol (NP). It has been detected in environmental water and sediment samples and is a persistent and hydrophobic (log KOW = 4.48) contaminant in many aquatic systems. In this study, the relative importance of NP uptake through accumulation from diet and water was examined for the detritus-feeding freshwater shrimp Gammarus pulex. Using a bootstrap nonlinear regression technique, the level of toxin present in G. pulex at any time during or after initial exposure was estimated. Heterogeneity, together with assumptions on feeding rate, was shown to affect the determination of NP uptake substantially. Because of its lifestyle as a benthic organism, the main exposure route was at first assumed to be through sediments and food. However, the results suggest that major uptake may also occur through water. The statistical and modeling methodology may be applied to uptake and depuration assessments for any aquatic organisms exhibiting a variable feeding phase.

The toxicity of cadmium and zinc at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 100 microg/l was investigated against the activity of Diplostomum spathaceum (Rudolphi, 1819) cercariae. Over a 24 h exposure period a significant reduction in cercarial activity occurred in solutions of cadmium, zinc, and a mixture of cadmium and zinc at all concentrations. Reduced cercarial activity also occurred in all toxicant solutions compared with controls after only 6 h exposure indicating that cercariae were vulnerable during the period of maximum cercarial infectivity (0-5 h). The mechanisms of metal toxicity and their importance to parasite transmission are discussed.

The widespread aquatic pollutant nonylphenol has been found to induce long-term and transgenerational effects in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas that have not previously been reported. Evidence is provided demonstrat- ing that when larvae are exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of nonylphenol for a single 48 h exposure at a key stage in their development, long-term sexual develop- mental effects are induced. Data provided by this study sug- gest that exposure to 1 and 100 µg l -1 nonylphenol at Days 7 to 8 post-fertilization results in a change in the sex ratio towards females and an increase in the incidence of her- maphroditism (10 mo later, up to 30% of the resulting adults were fully functional hermaphrodites). Gamete viability is also affected, resulting in poor embryonic and larval devel- opment (up to 100% mortality) of the subsequent generation.

The toxicity of the anti-fouling biocides tributyltin (TBTO), copper, and Irgarol 1051 (irgarol) at nominal concentrations ranging from 10 to 10,000 microg l(-1) was investigated against the speed of encystment and successful formation of a protective cyst of the cercariae of Parorchis acanthus. For all biocide exposures, cercariae had a much slower rate of encystment and reduced cyst formation than controls. Exposure of the snail host Nucella lapillus for 7 d caused complete cessation of cercarial shedding in irgarol-exposed snails but had no effect on cercarial encystment from TBTO and copper-exposed snails. The mechanisms of toxicity of the biocides are briefly discussed.

Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 requires environmental regulators to assess the risk of contaminants leaching from soils into groundwater (DETR, 1999). This newly introduced legislation assumes a link between soil and groundwater chemistry, in which rainwater leaches contaminants from soil into the saturated zone. As the toxicity of both groundwater and overlying soils is dependent upon the chemicals present, their partitioning and their bioavailability, similar patterns of soil, leachates and groundwater toxicity should be observed at contaminated sites. Soil and groundwater samples were collected from different contaminated land sites in an urban area, and used to determine relationships between soil chemistry and toxicity, mobility of contaminants, and groundwater chemistry and toxicity. Soils were leached using water to mimic rainfall, and both the soils and leachates tested using bioassays. Soil bioassays were carried out using Eisenia fetida, whilst groundwater and leachates were tested using the Microtox™ test system and Daphnia magna 48 h acute tests. Analysis of the bioassay responses demonstrated that a number of the samples were toxic to test organisms, however, there were no significant statistical relationships between soil, groundwater and leachate toxicity. Nor were there significant correlations between soil, leachates and groundwater chemistry.

A novel biomarker was developed in Daphnia magna to detect organic pollution in groundwater. The haem peroxidase assay, which is an indirect means of measuring oxidase activity, was particularly sensitive to kerosene contamination. Exposure to sub-lethal concentrations of kerosene-contaminated groundwater resulted in a haem peroxidase activity increase by dose with a two-fold activity peak at 25%. Reproduction in D. magna remained unimpaired when exposed to concentrations below 25% for 21 days, and a decline in fecundity was only observed at concentrations above the peak in enzyme activity. The measurement of haem peroxidase activity in D. magna detected sublethal effects of kerosene in just 24 h, whilst offering information on the health status of the organisms. The biomarker may be useful in determining concentrations above which detrimental effects would occur from long-term exposure for fuel hydrocarbons. Moreover, this novel assay detects exposure to chemicals in samples that would normally be classified as non-toxic by acute toxicity tests.
